KEEP THE BUGS AT BAY THIS FALL Ahhh, fall is around the corner and, unfortunately, so are more bugs. They’re back in full force. And they aren't going anywhere until well into winter. Bug issues range from the mild annoyance of ants in the house, to itchy mosquito bites, to full blown serious health issues associated with insects. Protecting your home from bugs should be a priority when fall rolls around, so follow these tips to keep the winged, six-legged demons away from your home. Keep the Outside Free of Debris. Firewood stacks, compost bins, and yard waste are like a five-star resort for insects. Keep firewood covered in the summer months, or give it away. dump out or clear out any areas of standing water; it’s a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes. Keep landscape beds free of weeds and plant debris, they can house bugs. And keep branches and plants away from your home’s foundation. Dry Up Damp Areas. Bugs are always searching for water, especially in the summer heat. Some home invading pests, such a silverfish and centipedes like to hang out in damp places. So fix leaky faucets, and make sure the outdoor spigot isn’t dripping. You’re probably blasting the A/C all summer long, so make sure it’s not leaking. Cracks and Holes Are Like a Wide Open Door. Closely inspect your home’s foundation and any window or door screens. Make any necessary repairs.

Find some with natural or biodegrad-able ingredients that are safe to use around kids and pets. Create a Barrier to keep the bugs out. Use a perimeter insect killer and spray around the founda-tion of your home. Also get insect killer that is safe for plants and spray it on flower beds and mulched areas.

And despite cleaning the whole house, how many times have you had people over only to have them all congregate in the kitchen? That’s why it’s so important to maximize your kitchen space for both aesthetics and function, a goal that becomes even more challenging when you’ re short on space. Here are some ideas that will make your smaller kitchen seem a little more like a huge chef’s kitchen.

USE LARGER TILE. The smaller the tile, the more

grout there is to clean, so avoid using small grout tile, especially behind a stove where grease can splatter. Large tiles or stone slab behind the stove works best, since keeping your kitchen sparkling clean is even more critical when it’s small.

DON’ T LEAVE SPACE BETWEEN THE CABINETS AND CEILING.

This will create the illusion of adding height to the room and will also close a space that collects dust. Try cabinets that go all the way to the ceiling or use a fascia instead.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT COUNTER TOPS. Avoid stone

countertops that have been ground to a smooth, matte finish, as this material can stain easily. Same with butcher block countertops. Instead, opt for polished granite, marble or quartz.

STAY AWAY FROM TRENDY MATERIALS. Don’t choose

polished metal or other materials just because they are in style. Stick with things that will always look good, like quartz countertops and white-on-white: white appliances with white cabinets. This will brighten the kitchen and adapt to any colors or style.

STOP CLUTTER IN ITS TRACKS. Small kitchens have

a low tolerance for clutter, so take steps to keep your countertops clear. Find a home for appliances within cabinets, except for those you use daily, such as the toaster or coffee maker. By incorporating some of these ideas, your kitchen will appear bigger, and you’ll be happy to welcome all your guests into your kitchen—even when they eschew your new couch for a kitchen barstool.
