PresideNts rePort The networking meeting in Cairns this week is the third time we have held such an event. Based on the numbers in attendance it appears to be growing momentum and will again be on next year’s calendar. A big thank you to Kerrie Auer for all the time spent arranging the venue and functions for this weekend, with support from Sandra our administrator. Yesterday’s visit out to the Great Barrier Reef is one very few us get to see more than once. It goes to show how lucky we are in Australia to have travel destinations such as this. I encourage everyone to enjoy themselves and to socialise with the other guests as much as possible. We are all here for the same thing; to learn what the association is doing; supported by great weather; good times, and to ultimately network (justifying the business expense.) Today’s guest speaker Mr Anthony Hart will provide an insight into mental health issues across a broad spectrum, and I’m sure he will enlighten those who hear his presentation later today. Anthony will also be attending the network dinner this evening and has made himself available to answer any questions or issues you wish to discuss. Since my time as president of the CSDAA I have had the good fortune to have the support of many executives, to assist in a wide range of tasks to further promote and better the cause of the CSDAA. No more so than Carolyn Macgill who has overseen this journey with the executive group since 2013. Carolyn has advised that it is with great regret that she will be stepping down due to a change in workload within the Ai Group. On behalf of the Executive Committee and members I would like to acknowledge the contribution Carolyn has made to enhance the reputation of the CSDAA during the past 6 years. Carolyn’s guidance and counselling has been a contributing factor in the development of the CSDAA. Carolyn has stated that she will be keeping a close eye on how the CSDAA is performing and looks forward to seeing the success continue for its members. Thank you, Carolyn. The new Executive Officer is Margaret Bounader. Margaret formerly worked for Austrade as Victorian/Tasmanian State Manager, and as Trade Commissioner in Asia, Africa and the US. Margaret has worked with many industries during her time with Austrade and has previous experience in the international promotion of education and training and is currently sitting on an

PresideNts rePort advisory board with the Australian Catholic University. She is an accomplished advisor who will ensure the CSDAA continues to move forward. During the past 12 months the CSDAA has been actively updating the member and contractor lists for Australia. Another big thank you to Kath Rowden for her work updating these records. In addition to this Kath has been looking after the CSDAA membership drive we promoted back in April 2018. I am pleased to say that based on Kath’s hard work and perseverance the CSDAA has welcomed an additional 22 new members to its ranks. I would like to introduce and acknowledge the following new members for the 2018 financial year; New Members joined from March 2018 1. Allens Industrial Products Pty Ltd Distributor/Supplier 2. iNtroduciNg diamoNd cut coNcrete After 171/2 years, Tanya and I are pleased to introduce the new owner of Diamond Cut Concrete Mr Philip Sweeney. We would like to thank all of our customers and staff for their support and friendship over the years. We are excited for Philip to be continuing on the company name and vision and we trust that you will all continue to support him. On a personal note I would like to thank Jason, the Executive Committee and the many friends I have made through our CSDAA membership. Over the last 17 years we have always enjoyed the camaraderie and support that has been available through the association. The many trips to CSDAA meetings, hold fond memories for Tanya and myself. I have always taken comfort that the everyday struggles of business, are shared by all contractors throughout Australia and over a beer or two you realise you are not the only one facing these challenges. After a total of 25 years in the industry its time to wash the slurry out of my veins and do some travelling, but I expect I will catch up with some of the members for a beer or two at some point in the future. Regards, Jon and Tanya Hart

We wish Jon and Tanya all the very best for their future and safe travels. And welcome Phillip to the Association

csdaa life member lloyd williams

Lloyd Williams commenced his working career in Adelaide, South Australia with A.E. Williams & Sons in 1965. A.E. Williams & Sons was one the first companies in Australia to purchase a road saw and Lloyd was the operator. Identifying opportunities in the marketplace Concut followed by Drillcrete were established of which Lloyd ran these businesses. During this time he worked on special projects such as airport runway grooving at all airports throughout Australia. In 1976, Lloyd and his wife Gail, commenced importing diamond tools from Dembitzer and selling diamond blades to the concrete sawing and drilling contractors, establishing the Australian brand Dembicon. His passion in diamond tool technology motivated Lloyd to design and subsequently manufacture diamond tools for specific needs within the construction industry. Dembicon expanded to have sales outlets in all major capital cities in Australia. In 1982 Lloyd launched the first Australian laser welding facility for diamond tools. This facility operated 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to cater for the demand of laser welded diamond tools. This facility also expanded to introduce a subdivision of laser cutting of materials such as steel, plastics, metals for precision parts, custom design parts, signage, logos etc. under the operating name of Laserworks. Lloyd introduced to the Australian market place under the Dembicon operation major international brands including Target, GDM, Milwaukee, Shibuya, Meco, Partner, Magnum, Dembitzer, Sankyo and Disco amongst other international brands. Highlights as Managing Director of Dembicon Australia included: designing specialised diamond tools for grooving of airport runways and other major projects. Designing the Stubbie bricksaw, expanding the sales operations into all major capital cities in Australia as well as into the west coast of USA. In 1999, Electrolux, now Husqvarna, bought Dembicon Australia. Lloyd was integral in introducing and developing the major brands of Partner, Dimas and Diamant Boart to Australia and headed the Australasian region for Husqvarna Construction Products in his capacity as Vice President, Sales & Marketing Asia Pacific for more than 10 years. In 2009, after a brief retirement period, Lloyd became restless and wanted to get back into the industry and launched Traxx Construction Products with a vision of providing innovation and excellence in diamond tool technology and equipment and backed up by a passionate team of people. Lloyd was the inaugural President of the Industrial Diamond Association of Australia (now known as the Concrete Sawing & Drilling Association of Australia) and proudly contributed to the Association’s growth and success for over 9 years in this role. Since handing over the Presidency, Lloyd has continued to support the Association by being an active Committee member for many years. Lloyd would describe himself as committed and passionate about this industry, committed to the success of the CSDAA and what the Association can effectively contribute to its members and future members.

do you kNow how to calculate the weight of a core? All dimensions done in Metres in the equation Weight in Tonnes = πr² x depth x density if we have a 300mm Ø hole 200mm deep π=3.14 (22/7) r=0.15M (remember radius is half the Diameter) depth =.2M density = 2.5Tonne/M³ (approximate average of concrete)

3.14x0.15x0.15x0.2x2.5=0.035Tonnes Multiply that by 1000 to convert to Kilograms .035x1000=35Kg

aNthoNy hart - meNtal health advocate "Fifteen years ago I walked off the top of a 21 storey building. A balcony awning broke my fall 11 storeys down and I survived. Now, I follow four powerful principles to make sure that never happens again." ANTHONY HART

My mission is to improve the mental health of all Australians and bring about a significant reduction in our suicide rate in Australia today.

In 2003 after several years building a successful career in London, Anthony returned to his home town of Adelaide. He was a typical 28-year-old, meeting the stereotype of an ambitious male seeking his dream job. Privately and shamefully, however, he was living a daily battle with anxiety and depression. In November that year, he walked off the top of a 21 storey building. A balcony awning broke his fall 11 storeys down, nearly costing him his life. A pure stroke of luck saw Anthony survive. During his incredible five year recovery, he designed a program that became known as the Lifeback Tracker. Numerous close friends and business peers began to ask Anthony to meet for coffee, during which they would confide in him and reveal their own mental health challenges. Each time, he shared his own steps back to good mental health. The Lifeback Tracker became a self-help tool focusing on four powerful but simple principles, to be used by anyone when first confronted with signs of a mental health challenge. Good mental health and wellbeing has become Anthony's life passion. Today he is on a mission, having been given a second chance at life, to help others avoid going down the same path he did. My aim, through the Lifeback Tracker and telling my story, is to make people feel comfortable in asking for help, and understanding there is no real difference between mental health and physical health.

save our mates Construction workers are 6X more likely to die from suicide than from a work accident Anthony shares his life-changing, confronting yet powerful story about how he reached the lowest point of his life but, more importantly, how he got his life back. He digs out of the audience the permission to share vulnerable, yet real life lessons, deeply connecting with his audiences. He gives those who witness his talk takeaway learnings that will inspire and motivate individuals to make changes in their life, with a real goal to improve one's mental health and wellbeing. Duration: 45 minutes Recommended for formal presentations and conference keynotes To book or for more information, please contact Anthony: M 0419 188 208 E info@anthony-hart.com.au W anthony-hart.com.au

traiNiNg rePort In my last report, I touched on several key factors that will start to emmerge in our industry as the training qualification becomes better recognised. Feedback I have received from safety stewards who have seen the operator competency card has been encouraging. Nearly all comments are the same “this should have been out 10 years ago”. Having an established training competency is going to play an important part for operators and employers alike. I refer to the current building and construction industry in Victoria simply because they are the most militant. There are two main work categories that influence how much a company can charge for their services. Category one; Tier 1 & 2 builders who aren’t so much focused on cost but more about safety and competency for their subcontractors. Category two - all other entities who are price driven and don’t appear to have the same consideration for safely. Unfortunately, we will always have the latter given the financial strain on some businesses and their competitiveness or lack of it. Category 2 clients know they have to subcontract to companies that hold the correct high-risk license. High risk licenses such as crane drivers, dogman, riggers and scaffolders to name a few. The high-risk license employer knows he can justify his position because of the need to use qualified operators. The more our industry grows and continues to promote the RPL and competency card will have a flow on effect in strengthening the member’s position to increase opportunities which can only be good for everyone in our industry. Members will be able to justify their service based on the qualifications of their operators. I am certain that within the next five years nearly all Tier 1 builders will be asking for the CSDAA competency card, just as they are asking for scissor lift tickets. Its about reducing their exposure to risk and liability by ensuring operators that come onto their sites are competent, know what they are doing and work in a safe proficient manner. In the coming months I am looking forward to seeing the benefits of the CSDAA training initiative bear fruit, witnessing a change in the construction industry that is well overdue. I encourage all members and non-members to get on board sooner rather than later to have their operators attain the competency qualification. Jason Franken President CSDAA
