Sheraton Club Lounge
Fresh off a $50 million

renovation, Le

Centre Sheraton Montréal Hotel adds a renewed sense of sophistication in the city’s downtown core

t had been more than 20 years since I last stepped foot inside Le Centre Sheraton Montréal Hotel. It was the hotel of choice all those years ago for me and my gaggle of girlfriends, who wanted to spend New Year’s Eve in a ‘foreign’ city known for its nightlife and late-night eats. Back then, admittedly, I paid little attention to the hotel and how it looked, but I do remember it being ‘really nice,’ as any hotel would to someone with limited travel experience in their early 20s.

Now, I’ve returned, far more older with far more mileage under my travel belt, and like me, the hotel looks a bit more grown up, fresh off a $50 million top-tobottom renovation. Originally built in 1982 and last renovated in 2008, the newly enhanced Le Centre Sheraton Montréal Hotel looks sleek and sophisticated in all the right places, in a way that feels welcoming to all guests, no matter how far they’ve travelled or why they’ve come.

Case in point, while waiting to check in at the newly enhanced lobby (modern black furniture and gold accents have replaced outdated cherry-wood finishings), I study

the other guests in line and those meandering throughout the wide, open space. I take stock of myself, husband and nineyear-old daughter, all dressed casually to make the five-hour drive from Toronto more bearable, and the handful of businessmen and women clad in suits and smart blazers, surely there to attend meetings in downtown Montreal. And then there are others dressed even more casually than us, in sneakers and tees and wearing lanyards that read ‘CPA Montreal Invitational 2024,’ all members of the Canadian Poolplayers Association who are there to compete for cash money during a weekend tournament taking place on the fourth floor.

It’s a mish-mash of people from all walks of life, some coming as far as the southern states of America (their drawls are a dead giveaway), and yet we all seem to belong here at the new Sheraton. No one’s out of place or made to feel different, which is a testament to the hotel’s inclusive feel, relaxed ambiance and welcoming staff.

We check in and park the car (there’s plenty of underground parking with drive in/out privileges), and head up to our Sheraton Club Level room on the 35th floor. As any parent can attest, the hallmark of a good hotel room is the ‘wow’ factor, uttered by their child upon first entry. And I’m happy to report that Le Centre Sheraton Montreal did not disappoint, invoking a gasp and a wow from my daughter as soon as our door swings open.

Inside, we’re immediately struck by a hip, monochromatic current that runs throughout the room, an intentional approach based on the ‘New Sheraton Guestroom’ concept. There’s a beautiful king bed with a brand new, backlit leather headboard that faces a huge flat-screen TV, low-level console and minibar. Outdated brown carpeting has been switched out for an ultra-cool geometric pattern in light and dark grays, perfectly complementing fresh, new wallpaper on one wall and contemporary art on another. We make special note of the Sheraton Signature Height Adjustable table in the corner of the room, round and modern looking with fully-integrated height controls and power/USB ports positioned at its centre. The bathroom is equally fun to explore

FEATURE SUMMER EDITION 2024 11
Lobby

with my daughter, who delights in the roomy shower, beautiful double vanity and abundance of bath amenities. And let’s not forget the view! From the 35th floor, all of downtown Montreal is laid at our feet, including McGill University, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and there, in the distance, Mount Royal Park.

We forego unpacking to head up to the 37th floor instead, where the newly renovated Sheraton Club Lounge awaits with complimentary afternoon hors d’oeuvres for Club Level guests. Heavy doors open up to a gorgeous space defined by floor-toceiling windows, luxurious seating with gold accents, and a stunning latticed ceiling that matches the plush geometric carpeting. In the far back corner are deep blue wing-backed chairs paired in twos for deep conversations, private seating pods that face the spectacular view, and high-top tables and art deco-inspired chairs perfect for team meetings and group outings. But all this is secondary to the delicious spread laid out at the front of the room: an endless charcuterie board complete with mixed olives and cheeses, fish with polenta topped with capers and tomatoes, and a decadent assortment of baked goods, including chocolate muffins and yogurt parfait with caramel and fresh fruits.

After filling up on treats and sweets, we head straight to the indoor pool for an evening dip. It isn’t large by any means – simple, narrow and rectangular – but opulent

feeling, nonetheless, with an amber wood and frosted glass accent wall anchoring the far end, a row of loungers lining one side, and a welcoming Jacuzzi on the other. With the low ceiling, dim lighting, and vibrant blue of the water, the space looks and feels like an exclusive club at a high-end spa, and it was all ours to enjoy at this early evening hour, a decadent feeling that we soak up to our hearts content.

The next day begins back at the Sheraton Club Lounge for a to-die-for breakfast buffet that includes everything from muffins, pastries and artisan jams, to homemade smoothies, pancakes, bacon and granola parfait. Unlimited Starbucks coffee is the icing on the cake. We eat freely and happily, chatting with friendly servers who procure for us a map of the neighbourhood and provide recommendations for the best poutine in the city. They also confirm that the hotel is situated steps away from not one, but two metro stops, which proves invaluable for a day’s worth of sightseeing.

And oh, what a day of sightseeing we have, filled with all of Montreal’s top sights and attractions. We laugh at penguins at the Biodome, drool over incredible poutine in Old Montreal, eat the fluffiest coconut buns in Chinatown, and climb all 283 concrete steps of Saint Joseph’s Oratory of Mount Royal. Getting around is a breeze, thanks to allday Metro passes, and takes no time at all since Le Centre Sheraton Montréal is so centrally located. But by late afternoon, spent with sore feet, we head back to the hotel for the highlight of the entire weekend: dinner at Stanley.

A completely new restaurant that debuted in June 2023, Stanley, named after the Stanley Cup, is considered the

FEATURE
Pool Salon Club Sheraton All photos courtesy of Le Centre Sheraton Montréal Hotel

crowning glory of the hotel’s recent renovations. Located in the lobby and based on Sheraton’s philosophy that food is meant to be shared, the restaurant sits at the foot of the hotel where the Victoria skating rink – site of the very first codified hockey game in 1875 and the very first Stanley Cup final in 1894 – once stood. It’s no wonder then that Stanley has become a pre- and post-game hangout for die-hard Montreal Canadiens fans either on their way to or returning from the Bell Centre, located just around the corner from the hotel.

On this particular night, however, given our early six o’clock reservation, we pretty much have the restaurant to ourselves, which gives us ample time and opportunity to appreciate the room’s many impressive details. Though at first glance it may look like a typical lobby lounge, Stanley is much more impressive, with a long, marbled bar that runs the length of the room, luxurious leather seating, gold-plated globe lights, intimate seating areas with deep armchairs, and an entire two-storey wall of windows that doubles as an architectural showstopper. It’s a feast for the eyes, as is the dinner menu by Executive Chef Alexandre Martin, which we pour over with several

‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ until finally deciding on the Cod Fritters, the Gnocchi, the Tuna Poke and the Octopus. All of it is outstanding (earning two thumbs up from even a picky nine-year-old), a culinary progression of deliciousness that eventually culminates in dessert. Simply titled ‘Chocolate,’ what appears before us atop a handpainted chocolate swirl is a decadent bar of ganache-covered mousse with pralines and a hazelnut coating. In other words, a dream come true.

It’s impossible to believe that a meal like this can be topped – but it can, at the exact same restaurant the very next morning. As many of the wait staff tell us, dinner at Stanley is one thing, but weekend brunch at Stanley is on a whole other level. First introduced during the holidays, ‘Sparking Brunch’ has now become a permanent weekend fixture and an Instagram-worthy experience, thanks to a DJ spinning house beats at the far end of the room and an endless stream of gorgeously plated food. For $53 per person ($60 if you want a glass of mimosa, too), you can enjoy a selection of danishes, plus one ‘For the table’ plate (charcuterie or smoked salmon), and one Main dish. We opt for the Avocado Toast topped with mushrooms, and the Bénédictine, which comes with rosti, maple-glazed ham and poached eggs. Together with sliced meats and cheeses, fresh berries, crostini, croissants and truffle fries, it’s safe to say that we checked out of the hotel afterward totally stuffed and completely wowed.

But that’s just it about the new Le Centre Sheraton Montréal Hotel. Yes, it has all the elements of a centrally located hotel, and yes, it serves as an ideal hub to explore one of the world’s best cities. But if you actually take the time to enjoy all of the hotel’s offerings, from its renovated rooms and the pool, to the Club Lounge, Stanley restaurant and the incredible food, you’ll see that it’s elevated the typical hotel stay to a full-blown experience. It doesn’t just want you to stay and leave – it wants you to stay, play, relax and indulge, all of which we’ve done in full. We could have easily stayed longer (if my daughter had her way, we would have), but we also left knowing that we banked many new family memories, and for that I’ll be forever grateful.

How Collette puts travel advisors first with more ways to save and earn

There’s no question that Collette has travel advisors’ best interests in mind. How do we know this? For one thing, the company’s Travel Advisor Reward Program, launched in September 2023, was built on the company’s existing policy for advisors, allowing them to save even more, the more they book.

Starting with reduced rates of 50%, advisors receive bigger savings on land tours the more travellers they book within a single year. They also have the opportunity to increase that number by 100% if they book over 40 travellers. Advisors will also receive reduced rates for companions, starting at 25%.

In addition to the program, Col-

lette offers several opportunities for advisors to earn more. In March 2024, advisors were able to earn an additional $100 for each booking. Plus, they can earn up to an additional $200 with Collette’s Advanced Commission Program, which applies to all five of the company’s travel styles.

“We value travel advisors and want to see them succeed,” said Jaclyn Leibl-Cote, chief executive officer. “This offer is one more way for us to show them our appreciation when they provide their customers with their expertise in planning a dream vacation.”

To help travel advisors even further, Collette has launched its new ‘Collette Connection’ print-ondemand service, which allows them to send the company’s Explorations brochure with a personalized letter attached to their clients. All client information is completely confidential and the service is free of charge for advisors.

Collette’s Explorations brochure features 43 small-group tours designed by travellers, for travellers. These tours, which have become increasingly popular, offer travellers experiences that go beyond the guidebook.

“Collette is giving travel advisors an advantage with Collette Connection. The inclusion of a letter with a call-to-action to go along with our Explorations brochure is an opportunity for travel advisors to grow their business in personalized way,” added Leibl-Cote.

As the longest-running tour operator in North America, Collette offers over 170 tours to all seven continents and five distinct travel styles, including small group touring and river cruises.
