Growing up in Scandinavia this part of the world is very close to my heart and my head is filled with fond childhood memories from long summers in the Norwegian mountains and fjords, the Swedish archipelago, the Finnish lakes and the Danish islands. The long winter means the everyone is out and about over summer and that people are happy and friendly and you’re sure to have a great time. The Nordic countries might not be the first choice for a family holiday, but there is so much to do and see that you should not cheat yourself out of some great Nordic family memories. But this place is being marketed as one of the 25 wonders of the world and is it definitely a fantastic experience - especially in winter when the scorched surroundings are covered in snow. The hot geothermal pools is supposed to be great for your skin, but more so for your mind. There is no better way to get the stress out of the body and you’ll all be fully relaxed after a day in the Blue Lagoon. You can always add a whale watching trip to the programme or stay up late to not watch the sun go down. This tiny little island off the coast of Southern Sweden is actually part of Denmark, but so far away from the hustle and bustle of the mainland that you have to adjust your watch to match the much slower tempo here. Nature is quite different from the rest of Denmark (where everything is flat) and the rugged cliffs and impressive rock formations is a perfect backdrop for a bike trip. Great for kids as the island is small enough to get around in a few days, but still lots of things to see and do. BUILD AND SAIL YOUR OWN RAFT Try something different; build your own timber raft for a Huckleberry Finn adventure with wild camping on the riverbank. Nights are spent in a tent on a well-moored raft or on land; meals consist of what you catch during the day (or provisions you brought). The Klarälven river in Sweden was used for logging up until 1991, but now it’s just plain sailing or rather drifting for timber-rafting enthusiasts who drift down-river past rural villages, forest and farmland without a care in the world. Start the day with a morning swim and end it with hot chocolate and a bonfire. If you and the kids (like some of us) love the outdoors, but are not into hiking then this is the thing for you. This roundtrip starting from Bergen (or alternative from Oslo) is absolutely breathtaking and still great fun for the kids. There are a few different transport options, but you can board a catamaran ferry in the charismatic harbour of the city of Bergen (beforehand you can take the funicular to the top of the mountain for a beautiful view) and sail in through the majestic Sognefjord. At the bottom of the fjord you get off at Flåm where you catch the Flåm Railway which takes up up into the mountain range before you finally head home. Santa Park is located in an underground cavern just a few kilometres north of Rovaniemi. Along with Santa Claus, the cavern is home to countless happy and helpful elves, and children are able to spend time in Elf School learning their tricks. There is also a bakery where you can help the elves decorate gingerbread, a restaurant, and an ice bar and gallery. Every 2 hours the elves put on an entertaining show for the children on the stage, and there is a charming train
to take you around the different areas of the cavern. LEGOLAND has itself spread across the world and you can now visit LEGOLANDs in Europe, North America, Asia and the Middle East. In Denmark, everyone knows Bakken, the world’s oldest amusement park. But despite being located just ten minutes outside Copenhagen, the park, which is tucked away in the beautiful woods of Dyrehaven, is still unknown to most foreign visitors. And that is a shame because the park not only offers free entrance, it also offers a nostalgic historic ambiance, authentic Danish charm and an array of amusements and thrill rides. Bakken’s longest standing visitor is Pjerrot. The well-known white-faced clown, who visits Bakken every day, has

If you had to pick one food thing to describe the Swedish it could very well be the cinnamon bun also called kanel bulle. This cinnamon-spiced doughy delight is essentially a long string of pastry dough wrapped into a ball and stuck together with sticky-sweet cinnamon buttery syrup. These are pernickety-but-tasty little suckers. To meet the huge demand for them in Sweden, crayfish must be imported from China, Turkey and the US, but the prized Swedish crayfish is always deemed tastiest. Every year in August and September you could get lucky to be invited to a Crayfish party (kräftskiva) and if that happens say “yes, please” and enjoy a wonderfull Swedish evening with friends. SEMLOR
Semla in singular form or semlor in plural – (and let’s face it, any decent bun lover will always have at least two so call them semlor) are doughy balls of sin, oozing a slathericious almond and cardamom paste with lashings and lashings of vanilla-whipped cream atop. Traditionally eaten only on the day before Lent, (the Christian fasting period), semlor are now eaten on a daily basis by semlor addicts nationwide from Christmas until Easter.

They love a BBQ just as much as we do and a Finnish summer is not complete without grillimakkara. These big, fat sausages made for grilling are eaten with mustard and washed down with beer. KARJALANPIIRAKKA
Karjalanpiirakka or Karelian pies, as they are also known, fit into your hand and melt in your mouth. The crust was traditionally made with rye flour and filled with potatoes, rice or carrots. Kalakukko are similar to karjalanpiirakka, but bigger in size and made with fish. They are most commonly filled with muikku, a small herring-like fish found in the Lake District of Eastern Finland. These open faced sandwiches are probably the most wellknown traditional dish to come out of Denmark. The base is a dark rye bread found in every kid’s lunch box. On top you can put almost anything you like, but often you’ll see pickled herring, fish fillets, egg and prawns or perhaps sliced potatoes.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME
Funnily enough Danish Pastry is called “Bread from Vienna” in Denmark. It comes in most shapes and sizes, but you must try a “Bagerens dårlig øje” which means “The Baker’s Gooey Eye” if nothing else.
KRANSEKAGE
Kransekage or Ring Cake is a traditional marcipan cake often eaten at New Year’s Eve parties, but also at celebrations like birthdays and wedding anniversaries. You can get a piece of kransekage and a coffee at most of the traditional Danish restaurants and you can be sure that the kids will love this traditional treat.

When Bolette BlÌdel, architect by profession, went on maternity leave for the first time she found that children’s furniture were inadequate and uninspiring for her son, as most were merely miniatures of adult furniture. SMALL BIRD
Kristian Vedel designed his family of BIRDs - children, parents and grandparents back in 1959. Though only the small BIRD was put in production, it quickly became one of the most successful Danish wooden products from the 50s. There are many way of getting around the city, but you should not cheat yourself of a boat tour in the harbour and canals of inner city. Apart from being great fun for the family it is super way to get to know the city and spot some of the places you might want to visit later on. Boats depart from Nyhavn where you can enjoy an overpriced lunch - or maybe more enticing to the kids - a oversized ice cream. Note that there are two different boat operators - one charges twice the amount of the other for same experience.

Travel back in time
Being the oldest monarchy in the world there are plenty of history to indulge in and not just for adults. Go see Rosenborg Castle nestled in the stunning King’s Garden and relive how kings and queens ruled the country. Embark on a reallife treasure hunt for the crown jewels underneath the castle. The ruins under the parliament - Christiansborg - is also a great place to explore for kids. You walk through the remains of the castle dating back more than 800 years.

Amusement park galore
As you probably know already (having read the previous article) Tivoli is an absolute must for families visiting Copenhagen. It is the second oldest amusement park in the world, only surpassed by Dyrehavsbakken a few kilometers north of the city. Prepare to pay a king’s ransom as you have to pay for both the entrance and for each ride. Keep costs down by investing in a multiride (or co-rider ticket) and bring you own food. There are a couple of nice lawns where you can enjoy a picnic and once you are in you can spend the whole day. Most Fridays concerts are held on the main stage (and they are free once you have paid the entrance fee) so if you want to make the most of your day and dollar check out the programme in advance.

Enjoying the outdoors
Even though you are in the middle of a big city there are plenty of options when it comes to enjoying the outdoors. Copenhagen is filled with green areas and parks where the locals seem to spend most of the summer afternoons. The Botanical Gardens is a great place to take the kids and a quick walk through and up in the giant greenhouse is definitely worth your
while. Frederiksberg Garden is also a local family destination. Go for a rowboat ride on the canals and hear about life in the royal gardens hundreds of years ago. If you are travelling with bigger kids consider renting bikes - it is a great way to get around the city and everywhere you go there are bike paths. The Danes love to bike and it can be a bit hectic during peak traffic, so unless you are seasoned bike riders stay off the road when the locals are on it. travelsprout.com.au

With a yearly average temperature of 7.7 degrees you should consider traveling in the summer months - June, July and August. Spring is also nice, but the weather can be more unpredictable. Unless you like short gray days filled with rain stay clear of the winter months which generally last from December to March.
