A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

WELCOME

This time around we have travelled to Great Britain in search of some great family holidays. And to be honest we could probably fill up the next year’s issues with great stuff to do in just that part of the world. You can do the classic sightseeing in London or try out the less traditional things in this great city. You can explore the Lake District and find your inner viking. You can dive into the darkest corners of Pitt-Rivers Museum in Oxford or check out some very weird, but very wonderful accommodation across the country. In other words - no excuse not to go travelling. The adventure is not far away and there are many more travel memories to be found and formed. Enjoy!

Combine the excitement of trekking the Indian Himalayas with visiting a tiger conservation project in the famous Corbett National Park. Help us double the amount of tigers in the wild by 2022! WWF-Australia is a partner in the Global Tiger Initiative. We have an ambitious but achievable goal of doubling the number of tigers in the wild by 2022, the next Year of the Tiger. Did you know? Tiger stripes are like human fingerprints. No two tigers have the same pattern of stripes.

EXPLORING THE WORLD OF THE

PITT-Rivers Museum

EXPLORE YOUR INNER CHILD Children are natural explorers. They want to open things, touch things, and see what’s around the next corner. Many museums are encouraging this by adding interactive, hands-on exhibits. It’s ironic, then, that the museum that consistently wins the vote for the most popular in the United Kingdom hasn’t significantly changed its displays in a hundred years. The Pitt-Rivers Museum in Oxford is a time capsule back to the days when museums were dim, crowded places where the glass cases were stuffed with

artifacts bearing vague labels. Despite this, everyone finds it fascinating, especially kids. Why? Because the Pitt-Rivers looks like the chaotic attics of a hundred globetrotting explorers, which is basically what it is. The whole of human creativity is here, everything from Japanese theater masks to ancient Egyptian animal mummies, from African shields made of rhino hide to coconut fiber skirts from the Cook Islands. There’s a collection of skulls and shrunken heads sure to hypnotize any child. Parents will probably be more frightened of the antique surgical instruments. There’s even a strange little glass bottle that supposedly has a witch trapped inside.

You can easily get lost among the many glass cabinets

ORGANISED CHAOS Instead of being organized by place and time, displays are organized by use. The Firemaking case shows how Aborigines made fires with a bow and piece of string, while next to it is a 19th century English lighter that used stearin, a compound of purified fatty acids. The Money section has sticks of salt used as currency in Abyssinia and German banknotes made of shoe leather. The Toys and Games section shows that kids in traditional societies all over the world amused themselves in similar ways. Dolls are dolls even if they look a bit different from place to place. Dice look more or less the same, and every society seems to miniaturize adult objects to make toys.

Man’s best friend - recycled

Who wouldn’t want to take home a hat like that?

ONE BIG ROOM OF MYSTERIES The Pitt-Rivers is one big room with three levels and is literally packed with items. Not only are the cabinets bursting at the seams, but every available wall space is filled with spears, shields, masks, and paintings. Pacific Island catamarans and Inuit kayaks hang from the ceiling. Below the cases are drawers you can pull out to see more treasures. Whether you look up, down, or around, you’ll always spot something interesting. The lighting is kept low, and the interiors of the cases are murky, so the staff hands out flashlights at the front door. Kids wander around like explorers, peering into the cases and shining their curious beams into packed drawers. Given the huge number of young visitors, the Pitt-Rivers has several family activities. My child’s favorite is hunting for the mice. The curators have hidden several wooden mice in the exhibits, and hand out clue sheets to help kids find them. Some are very well hidden, so they’ll need those flashlights!

PITT-Rivers Museum General’s armour from Japan

Oxford has plenty to offer traveling families. The Natural History Museum in the same building as the Pitt-Rivers has dinosaurs and a glass beehive. The city center is famous for its medieval buildings, and you can go punting on the river. Oxford makes an easy day trip from London or a destination in its own right. Sean McLachlan writes travel, history, and fiction and divides his time between Oxford and Madrid. Visit him at his blog Midlist Writer and his Amazon Page.
