There are many reasons to travel, but I think the best one is to make memories that will last the rest of your life. All these memories will stay with us from the first family holidays until we can pass them on to our own kids. First stop is Perth Zoo. You can take the seven-minute drive over Narrows Bridge to South Perth, or you hop on a ferry from Barrack Street Jetty and walk along Mends Street to you get there. The zoo is open every day of the year from 9am and you can find more than 1,200 animals from all around the world, each with their own unique habitat. You can pick up a map and find your own way around, join a free guided walking tour, or even pre-book close encounters for a unique animal experience. During the summer months there’s also a host of special events with fun activities for the whole family. Grab a light lunch at the zoo’s cafes, or if you’ve brought a picnic or barbecue lunch, head for the free barbecues and picnic tables on the zoo’s lush main lawn. 12

About 2 hours from Hobart Bruny Island is about 50 kilometres long but looks like two islands with North and South Bruny joined by a narrow strip of land called The Neck. BEING CULTURAL
The Blue Mountains Cultural Centre opened in late 2012 and is a calm and inviting oasis for families. The beautiful gallery hosts a variety of exhibitions throughout the year, but the World Heritage exhibition is a fantastic, interactive display that is open yearround and really appeals to kids with 360 degree audio-visuals of the sights and sounds of the Blue Mountains. With tickets only $5 each to cover all exhibitions, this is a lovely and cheap family activity. The centre itself also encompasses the local library, a wonderful café and lots of open space. Great at any time of year, but
particularly good on a wet day – it was actually my haven when I first moved to the mountains due to its welcoming environment and kid-friendly appeal. Waradah Aboriginal Centre really is the ultimate experience in Aboriginal culture with dance and didgeridoo performances taking place nine times a day in their newly renovated theatre. The dance troupe takes a lot of pride in sharing their heritage with guests so this is a very special experience to have. Located close to Echo Point, catch a performance and then head down to the Three Sisters to take in the wonder of this sacred Aboriginal Place.

FLORA AND FAUNA
Of course there is plenty of wildlife to see on the Blue Mountains bushwalks but if you are looking for something a bit more planned then you can’t go past Mount Tomah Botanical Gardens for beautiful plant-life and vast open spaces that are perfect for a picnic in the sun, or Featherdale Wildlife Park to get up and close with the animals. Mt Tomah is free to visit and usually has a kids adventure activity that you can purchase for a small fee. The Blue Mountains has some really special cafes and restaurants and thankfully, quite a few meet the KIDsize criteria! Here are some favourite places to eat with kids in the mountains:
KIDSIZE CAFE
It’s pretty hard to go past this café for kidfriendliness. Situated in Glenbrook at the foot of the mountain, 2773 is pretty much everything you could hope for. A fantastic menu, super-duper babycinos, a great play area and farm animals to keep the kids entertained, this really is a must to visit. Possibly the most appealing part (aside from the amazing food) is the variety of seating options. If standard café table and chairs aren’t your thing (as they can sometimes be difficult with children) then use one of the picnic tables, recline on a beanbag or borrow a picnic blanket.
Comfort is the key here. Stop here on your way up the mountain or make it part of your trip to the Jellybean Pool. 2773 is perfect for a morning coffee and snack, lunch or dinner and has free music in the garden on Sunday afternoons. Bliss.
GINGerbread house
Another well-planned option for families, the Gingerbread House is a café set in an old church in the centre of Katoomba. The inside looks a lot like ye olde sweet shop with shelves of candy canes, gingerbread kits and boiled lollies but outside is a spacious seating and play area that is completely enclosed. Although sweet things are their speciality (the chocolate, ginger and date scones are a must), they also have a decent lunch menu.

THE BUNKER
This is a new café/restaurant that has opened on the main street of Springwood. Indoor and outdoor seating is available and although it wouldn’t look out of place in the heart of Sydney CBD, The Bunker is also very popular with families. The menu is great and so are the facilities with space for strollers, changing facilities and possibly the coolest ‘play’ area we have seen, in the form of an iPad station where kids can play games to their hearts content (and you can charge your devices too).
Pizza galore
Papadino’s Pizzaria is a pizza/pasta restaurant located on the main street of

Katoomba that is a perfect dinner choice for families. Who doesn’t love tasty pizza in a cosy, family-friendly environment? I’ve even heard that they will sometimes give pizza dough to kids to play with while you wait for your meal. Fun!
GREAT LUNCHES
Crust & Crumbs is a sandwich bar on the main street of Katoomba and is a really handy place to grab a quick bite to eat for lunch. Particularly useful if you are going for a bushwalk or want to take a cheaper meal to one of the attractions. Not so kid-friendly to sit-in but their food options, such as simple sandwiches or jaffles, and bite-sized snack boxes are winners for little ones.

DIY: Dinosaur Planter Megan Morton’s book, I Heart My Room, has been hanging out on our coffee table for awhile now. The other day though, I was surprised to find our four year old flipping through it. “I want to change my room around!” he declared. So together we’ve been getting rid of all the little boy stuff and making it a big boy’s room. We moved furniture around, sorted through cupboards and added a few bits and pieces. Getting Wet
A holiday on the Murray is not complete until you get the kids in the water. You can of course just jump in for a swim, but there are plenty of places where you can hire paddleboats, canoes, sailing boats, life jackets and ski gear. You can learn how to wakeboard at South Side Wakeboard at Murray Bridge, which offers lessons by the hour.
A canoe is a great way to explore the river - just remember to go upstream so you can float back on the way home when you have tired arms. For a true family camping experience, free bush camping in the state forests, national parks and red gum reserves along the Murray between Albury and Mildura is hard to beat. There are hundreds of sandy beaches and great secluded spots connected by river tracks. More established
