MAPPING THE WAY AT STATIONS

RNIB maps have been installed at Hull Paragon, Dewsbury and Manchester International Airport to help our blind and partially sighted customers use our stations confidently.

The ‘Map for All’ has been developed and produced by the Royal National Institute of Blind People and can be read using both sight and touch. The maps have been created using a mixture of layers, textures, raised print, and braille lettering to identify different parts of the station and facilities.

CHARITY WALK FOR MND

Chris Jeffery, Accessibility & Transport Integration Manager said: “I am delighted that we now have RNIB Maps for All at Hull, Dewsbury and Manchester Airport stations. These maps will help blind and partially sighted people navigate our stations more easily and independently, but they are great for anyone who is new to a station and needs directions too”.

In the future maps are planned to be installed in Middlesbrough, Huddersfield and Scarborough, helping the blind and partially sighted people of these communities to be more independent when travelling around these stations.

Next month Ashley Miller, Revenue Protection Officer at Huddersfield, will be taking on the incredible challenge of completing a 101 mile walk to visit rugby clubs across West Yorkshire.

This amazing feat is all in aid of the Motor Neurone Disease Association, which focuses on improving access to care and research for those living with or affected by motor neuron disease in the UK.

The start of the journey will see him walking from the Huddersfield Giant’s ground (the John Smith’s stadium)

to the Waterhead Warriors ground, seeing various other rugby clubs across West Yorkshire on the way. The second leg will see him finishing his journey back at Huddersfield via Halifax.

The walk is inspired by Rob Burrow, a former rugby league player who has MND and has become a prominent figure in raising awareness of the disease.

If you would like to donate and support Ashley in taking on this incredible challenge, you can donate on his JustGiving page here

TAKING THE NORTH FURTHER | WEDNESDAY 23 AUGUST 2023

Colleagues from the Commercial Team were in Cumbria last week volunteering with Friends of the Lake District. The team were at High Browdale removing tree tubes, so that the local wildlife can be protected and the tree growth isn’t hampered.

Their first task of the day was evicting the sheep from the field, which may have not been easy without a sheep dog. Once the sheep were out (and plotting how to get back in), the team turned their attention to removing the tree tubes and staking.

Friends of the Lake District is an independent charity and is the only membership organisation dedicated to protecting the landscape in the Lake District and Cumbria.
