TOGETHER WEEKLY

Our Sustainability team took their monthly meeting on the road recently and visited Castlefield Viaduct on Deansgate.
The team used the time to take part in a 30-minute guided tour of the former railway viaduct, which has been converted into a beautiful sky garden in the centre of Manchester. The viaduct comprises a range of habitats and provides an important green corridor within the heart of the city, with plans in place to extend further along to Pomona Island. On the viaduct, there are wildflower areas, native tree species, ponds, habitat boxes and community plots growing a variety of species.
The site is managed by the National Trust and free pre-bookable 30-minute guided tours are available 10.30am-12.30pm, or general opening for walk-ups 12.30pm-4.30pm every day.
Taking the opportunity to get away from the office for an hour, the team used the time to socialise, learn and take some biodiversity inspiration for what could be achieved across the stations on our network.
Nicola Martin, Head of Sustainability, said: “Our Sustainability team has a wide range of expertise and to help us understand each other’s priorities and challenges, we came together as one team to share ideas.
“The trip to Castlefield Viaduct Sky Garden organised by Steve was a fantastic opportunity for us to hear about the opportunities for biodiversity on the railway. Steve shared his knowledge and our vision for being good for nature as part of our Sustainability Strategy, and details on the projects that will be taken forward in the coming months.
“I’d encourage colleagues and supply chain partners to go and visit this fantastic local green space and take some valuable time out of the day if working in or around Manchester.”
You can find out more about Castlefield Viaduct on the website.
