TOGETHER

In recognition of Employee Appreciation Day today (Friday 1 March), we spoke to some of our fantastic colleagues who have gone above and beyond at work – earning themselves a Shining Star of the Month award.
Since April 2023, we’re proud to have recognised 378 colleagues for individual successes and outstanding positive behaviours through our Shining Star reward and recognition scheme.
Managers can nominate colleagues for one of four levels of recognition – with the top level resulting in a £250 reward for outstanding performance – as well as the potential to be named Shining Star of the Month. We caught up with two deserving winners to hear their stories.
Geoffrey Feetenby, Revenue Protection Assistant based in Hull, received a Shining Star for his quick thinking when an intoxicated passenger passed out on the platform at Thirsk station. After switching on his body worn camera, Geoffrey helped move him to a safe place.
Despite having chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and being aware of the risks, Geoffrey described his actions as being part of his role and merely ‘doing the right thing’.
He said: “I originally worked 22 years on the railway –eight years as a conductor and 14 years as a revenue officer –before retiring for three years. But I missed the railway and the general public. I’ve been back with TPE for three years, and I’ve always been aware that we are frontline workers and revenue is only part of our job. I've dealt with heart attacks, a lady with deep vein thrombosis, a diabetic coma and the list goes on… so it was a surprise to be awarded a Shining Star and it makes me feel appreciated.”
Daniel Dreggs, Interim Regional Head of Drivers for the North, was recognised after going to great lengths to support a driver and his family in a time of need. After receiving the news that one of our drivers (based in Cleethorpes) had collapsed in the messroom at Manchester Oxford Road, Daniel drove to Cleethorpes to meet colleagues based there, as he knew once they received the news they would be upset and would need support.
Also, when Daniel heard no one could get hold of the driver’s wife, Daniel drove to her home and took her to the hospital. However, his kindness didn’t stop there, as he then drove to the home of our conductor who had waited at the hospital with the driver, and ensured he was okay.
Despite working a 22-hour shift and driving around 300 miles in one day, Daniel didn’t consider his efforts as anything special, instead he simply wanted to keep going until everything was sorted’.
Talking about his Shining Star award, Daniel said: “I was chuffed to get the award and also all the kind comments I got from colleagues around the network.”
Our Service Delivery Team is collecting Easter Eggs for Mustard Tree, a charity that supports families struggling across Greater Manchester. We’d love it if other colleagues also wanted to get involved and donate to a good cause this Easter. Please bring your donations to the Charlie Room on the 2nd floor of the Manchester ROC before 12 noon on Friday 15 March.
Colleagues located in Bridgewater House, please leave donations with Jackie Storbeck on the 8th floor and they will be transported across to the ROC.
During the careful dismantling of the Grade II-listed tearooms at Huddersfield, engineers from Network Rail stumbled upon railway history last week. hey discovered several vintage railway posters behind the poster cases attached to the tearoom on platforms four and eight.
Among these were advertisements promoting the Huddersfield-Hallam Hurrier, the New Railbus, and promoting direct services between Huddersfield, Chester and North Wales. The posters are believed to date back from the mid-1980s and were preserved when the more modern poster cases were installed on top of them.
Engineers will now carefully remove the posters to allow them to be protected and preserved. Once examined, a suitable home will be found where these valuable relics can be appreciated by both locals and visitors for years to come.
Every week we’re sent some amazing comments about our colleagues. Here are just a few of the messages customers that were sent in last week:
