SET IN STONE

A word from the publisher

With summer right around the corner, the days will be warmer and longer which means more time to have fun and share magical moments together.

We all know that summer is also the season of love, so we here at The Osider thought it would be a perfect time to get you up to speed on some amazing dating opportunities around town. Whether it’s a first date or a long-time couple keeping the spark alive, we have chosen some great options to enjoy. We as a city have so many fun things to do, and this list is just the tip of the iceberg.

Speaking of summertime, no day is complete without cruising the strand, and we dive into 10 things you didn’t know about it. We also revisit a favorite pizza spot and local watering hole with some new things on offer.

As spring turns to summer here in the O, please remember to practice patience and courtesy when it comes to dealing with more traffic, parking, and people visiting our amazing little town. If you are a tourist, please remember to respect the locals and clean up after yourselves. We all need to breathe in, smile, and let the little things slide on

by. There is plenty of room to move and enjoy this special place by the sea together.

There is nothing quite like summertime in Oceanside so, let the fun begin.

The dynamic coaching duo of Sean Helgesen and Billy Isles are on the right “track” to a legacy of success. The El Camino High School (ECHS) coaches have dedicated their careers to the students at ECHS, and it has paid off with recognition of their hard work as Oceanside’s Finest.

Both Helgesen and Isles can be found on and off the field throughout the year. Helgesen is a PE teacher, frosh football coach, and track and field coach. Isles is the head of security, varsity defensive back football coach, and track and field coach. Both Helgesen and Isles are ECHS graduates and represent their city as Oceanside’s Finest for their dedication to our community, the students of El Camino High School, and their alma mater.

A true Oceanside native, Helgesen was born at Tri-City Hospital, attended Palmquist Elementary, Lincoln Middle School, and graduated from El Camino High School in 1986. He attended Mira Costa College, and then transferred to Utah State to receive his Bachelor of Science in Physical Education with a Minor in Biology. Upon graduation, Helgesen joined Oceanside Unified School District (OUSD).

With his hire, Sean Helgesen continues a family career legacy of working for Oceanside Unified. His mother, Marcelle, was the librarian at Palmquist Elementary from 1982-2007. He started his teaching career at Martin Luther King Middle School, and, in 1998, he accepted a job at ECHS where he has been educating the students of Oceanside ever since.

Oceanside's Finest SEAN HELGESEN AND BILLY ISLES

WORDS:

Helgesen’s coaching career began with track and field in 1993, and then as frosh football coach in 1998 where he remains Head Frosh Football Coach and Head Boys Track and Field Coach. Helgesen also served as ECHS Athletic Director from 2009-2017. Along with his wife, Shannon, Helgesen raised his two children, Kayleigh (‘14) and Avery (‘16), in Oceanside, coached them in track and field, and they’re now ECHS alumni.

Billy Isles comes from a large family, composed of seven children (three brothers and three sisters) that have invested in their home city since their arrival in 1981. The Isles family moved from Los Angeles to Oceanside the summer before his freshman year at ECHS. After being a football, basketball, and track and field star, Isles graduated in 1985. He proudly stated of his high school experience, “Our football team went 13-0 my senior year with nine shutouts.”

He attended Palomar College and played football, but a shoulder injury ended his football career. At nineteen years old, he was asked to be an assistant defensive back coach at ECHS, working with legendary football coach, Herb Meyer.

While coaching Pop Warner, Isles worked for the City of Oceanside. In 1996, he started security at ECHS, the same year he became a dedicated defensive back coach. In 1997, Isles began coaching track and field, as well. Isles became head of security in 2011, where he keeps the ECHS grounds safe.

El Camino High School Principal, Eileen Frazier,

is proud of El Camino’s coaching duo, “Our El Camino track and field program is incredibly fortunate to have two outstanding coaches—Coach Helgesen and Coach Isles! These two men have dedicated years of service to developing not just great athletes, but exceptional young people. Their unwavering commitment, deep knowledge of the sport, and passion for mentoring have left a lasting impact on countless students. Coach Helgesen and Coach Isles consistently go above and beyond to support our athletes, both on and off the field. Their legacy is evident in the strength of our program and the character of the students they’ve inspired. We are truly blessed to have them as a part of our Wildcat community!”

Helgesen and Isles are the embodiment of Oceanside’s Finest with sentiments, “I love the City of Oceanside. I don’t know if there’s any place in the world that’s better than Oceanside, and I am fortunate and lucky to work at this school. Most of my friends that I grew up with returned to Oceanside,” professed Isles. Helgesen resonated, “El Camino is diverse and everybody just coexists. It’s a great school with great teachers, my kids even went to school here, that’s how much I believe in it.”

Both coaches began their careers at ECHS and both plan to end their careers at ECHS—that’s how dedicated they are to their school. Thank you, coaches, for your dedication to our community and for all the students you’ve coached, taught, and influenced—your legacy will live on throughout the halls of ECHS. Go Wildcats!

Our Guide To A Sustainable Summer (And Year) In Oceanside

B.Y.O. BAG

Choose to reuse and bring your own reusable bag for trips to the store, local farmers’ market, or even the beach.

SIP SUSTAINABLY

Skip the disposable water bottles and bring your own refillable and reusable water bottle that can be used during your vacation and all year long.

In the United States, 561 billion disposable food service items are used every year, resulting in 4.9 million tons of waste, according to upstreamsolutions. org. Although this may seem daunting, there are many simple and easy actions you can take to make a big impact against unnecessary waste.

Strive for zero waste and sustainability during your summer adventures and all year long to keep our beaches beautiful for generations to come. Use the tips below to help you make your summer more sustainable and simply #SkipTheStuff!

SNACK SMARTER

Ditch the single-use plastic and pack your snacks in reusable baggies or containers. Not only are they sleek and stylish, but you can greatly reduce your plastic waste!

REDUCE YOUR GENERATION OF WASTE

Bring only what you need to have a good time. Don’t bring everything “and the kitchen sink” to the beach!

LEAVE NO TRACE

Pack it in and pack it out. No matter what your travel plans are—keep Oceanside clean!

MARINE DEBRIS REDUCTION ORDINANCE

Oceanside businesses are prohibited from distributing polystyrene foam products and food service ware, and single-use carryout bags. Businesses are required to charge at least ten cents for reusable or recyclable bags. The Marine Debris Reduction Ordinance promotes the use of more sustainable alternatives that are compostable, recyclable, or reusable. To comply, opt for ecofriendly alternatives, such as reusable water bottles, storage containers and grocery bags.

For more tips on how you can incorporate sustainability into your lifestyle, information on the City of Oceanside’s environmental programs, and upcoming Green Oceanside events, please visit GreenOceanside.org

CONTINUE TO SORT YOUR ORGANICS!

Keep Oceanside green by continuing to properly sort your organic waste. By continuing to use the brown bins for your food scraps, like fruit, vegetables, dairy, bread, meat, bones, and food soiled paper products, Oceanside residents have made progress towards making Oceanside, and California, greener.

Organic waste in landfills emits twenty percent of the state’s methane, a climate super pollutant that heats the climate 84 times more than carbon dioxide. Separating organic waste is crucial because it helps reduce this landfill waste, minimizes harmful greenhouse gas emissions, and promotes composting, which enriches soil and reduces the need for chemical fertilizers. By diverting food scraps and yard waste from landfills, we contribute to a more sustainable and eco-friendly waste management system.

All of Oceanside’s green waste collected curbside goes to Oceanside’s El Corazon Compost Facility to be processed and composted. The compost is free to Oceanside residents, courtesy of the City of Oceanside and AgriService Inc. The El Corazon Compost Facility is located at 3210 Oceanside Blvd. Bring a shovel and be prepared to self-haul. Call (760) 439-9920 for more information.

THE SHIP AT PCH SPORTS BAR AND GRILL

WORDS: JAMEY STONE

PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER

I’m pretty sure that if you live or have spent any time in Oceanside, you have heard or been to PCH Bar and Grill in South O at one time or another.

In fact, they just celebrated their eighteenth anniversary. But, did you know that they also house a full, secret pirate bar known as The Ship? That’s right, a full-on pirate bar!

When you enter PCH, walk to the back near the pool table, and you will see a door to your right side. Behind that door, you will find The Ship. It’s almost Disney like, but in more of an adult way. With its rustic lighting and lit candles everywhere, long dark curtains and ravaged old sails hanging from the roof, the decor takes you back to a time where plunder and pillage were a way of life.

The walls painted by good friend and local artist Sean Dominguez (@artbydomo) tell a tale of life at sea with the wild ocean, sharks, and even

an octopus reminding of the perils of the ocean. They also offer special cocktails to make the whole experience come together like a wild band of pirates. I especially like the fun names they came up with for the bevs, like The ARR Tai, Kazi’s Blue Lagoon, This Ships Bananas, Scurvy Cure, and the Captains Crank. Owner Amy also had them make us a Cherry Poppin' Lemon Drop during our photo shoot.

The ship is not open every day, but you can enjoy it on Fridays and Saturdays from 5pm to close. On Sundays, they offer a mimosa and Bloody Mary bar from 10am to 4:30pm. You can still enjoy all of the great food and beer that PCH has to offer on these days, but in a completely different environment.

So, what are you waiting for? Hoist your mainsail, swab the decks, and sail on over to The Ship and enjoy the pirate’s life!

THE NEW NORTH COUNTY LGBTQ RESOURCE CENTER

WORDS: ALONDRA FIGUEROA

PHOTOS: KEVIN MIJARES

We are absolutely thrilled to announce the opening of the all new bigger and better North County LGBTQ Center right off Oceanside Boulevard on 1919 Apple Street. It is such a great location right by the sprinter stop and behind the Taco Bell. While some may think it is a little sketchy over there, I’m happy to share with you that things have really changed. A lot of that change has

been brought on by the new center. Our little center that could has been transformed into a cultural and community hub, and we are here for it! Center director, Max Disposti, shared that they had outgrown their previous home on Mission Avenue, and he quickly realized that renting in this economy was no longer an option. That is when he started the search for the

right place and the support he would need to bring this plan to fruition.

He reached out to the County of San Diego and boy, did they step up in a big way. Disposti shared that about 40 percent of what they raised came from the county. The rest came from private and public donors throughout the Oceanside community who really wanted to offer their support monetarily. Amazingly those donations ranged anywhere from five dollars to thousands of dollars! Max did not hesitate to say that it was a huge collaborative effort to come up with the massive million dollar down payment to secure the property on Apple Street. So happy that they were able to come together and did it!

Securing the property was just the beginning. This property needed a massive facelift and, again through a combination of efforts of many people, they moved in, painted, cleaned, and

NC Resource Center Director Max Disposti, center, celebrating at the ribbon cutting ceremony.
Oceanside Deputy Mayor Eric Joyce speaking at the opening ceremony.

decorated and successfully transformed this whole building into a beautiful retreat for all. The main building that houses the reception area is bright, warm, and welcoming. Here’s where you will find someone eager to help you access all kinds of community resources. Just tell them what you are looking for, whether it be community engagement, wellness, housing, mental health support, or anything in between, and you will know that you have come to the right place! Even if you are just cruising in to check it out, there’s a cute little area where you can peruse their LGBTQ library, chill out, and take it all in.

The center has so much to offer the Oceanside community, it is too much to list. While they specialize in LGBTQ issues, all are welcome. It’s wonderful that they are finally able to spread out and have individual suites for services such as Project Youth, which focuses on supporting LGBTQIA youth. They offer support groups for a variety of ages that are peer-led with lots of fun activities. For example, their after school program, Thrive Out Loud, runs from April 16 to June 25, every Wednesday at 3:30-6pm, for ages 12-18. Kids can explore art, community building, self-care practices, and every week they’ll have new activities focused on building confidence and self-advocacy. They are fed a free meal and have raffles and giveaways for attending every session.

The center also helps adults who may need access to health care, gender affirming care, immigration services, housing support for youth as well as adults, and twelve step programs—the list goes on and on! One would just need to meet with a case manager to help them navigate the resources.

Something amazing the center does for the Oceanside community is their Foodies & Goodies food distribution program. Every Friday from 123pm they offer free meals, and it is absolutely wonderful. Please feel free to donate to their food pantry knowing that they are helping those that might be facing food insecurity weekly.

Coming up for the center is their fabulous Pride by the Beach festival held annually to welcome in summer. This year it is on June 7, and the festival theme is BRAVE: Bold, Resilient, Authentic, Voice, Equality. It is the only family-friendly and free Pride event in North County, so be sure to check it out! The Osider will be hosting a booth and selling some of our own merchandise, and we hope you will stop by and say, “Hi!”

Another incredibly helpful resource is their partnership with Dream for Change to provide a Safe Lot where those facing housing insecurity can shelter for the night in their vehicles. Max worked hard with the city to make this happen. Creating a truly safe space for all is always the Center's mission.

We are so lucky to have the North County LGBTQ Resource Center right here in our town offering help to all of the community and those who need it most. Please visit their new home at 1919 Apple Street or check out their website to get more info. You will be so happy that you did!

Ten Things You Didn’t Know About The Strand

There is nothing so satisfying as a walk along Oceanside’s Strand with its expansive ocean and pier views. Sunsets are often spectacular and even a foggy morning shrouding the pier is a remarkable sight. The Strand is a beach promenade uniquely Oceanside.

WORDS: KRISTI HAWTHORNE PHOTOS COURTESY OF THE OCEANSIDE HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Looking north on The Strand in the early 1930s.

1. In January 1927, a Resolution of Intention ordering the paving of The Strand along the beach front from Wisconsin to Ninth Street (now Breakwater) was passed. Years before The Strand was built, a short boardwalk was built so that people could walk more easily rather than getting bogged down in the sand. Vehicle traffic on the hard sand was common but not always practical.

2.

The new beach road was initially and briefly called Paseo Del Mar, meaning “promenade of the sea.” Just over a mile in length and twenty feet wide, it would cost $100,000. The Strand would be decorated with ornamental lights, extending the entire length.

In the summer of 1927, Oceanside was set to celebrate a new pier, its fourth, designed by Oceanside City Engineer Ruel L. Loucks. A new pier, the bandshell, and a paved road along the beach would be distinctive features in the town whose slogan was, “Oceanside, Where Life is Worth Living.”

3.

Pouring of the cement for the Strand began in June 1927, just one month before the dedication

of the new pier. The concrete was mixed at a plant near the railroad at Eighth Street (Neptune) and brought in by four trucks and “poured into place in a hurry.” Because of the scope of the work, not all of The Strand was completed in time. Paving of The Strand between 6th and 9th Streets (Surfrider and Breakwater) began in August.

The Strand’s completion was considered “even greater than the building of the new pier, as it would enhance greatly the value of all oceanfront property.” It was the inspiration for a three-day festival held on Labor Day weekend, marking the closing of the summer season. This paved beach promenade became a cherished roadway that residents have traveled for nearly 100 years.

4. Before The Strand was paved, there were just a handful houses which dotted along the beach just under Pacific Street, but this new paved street provided needed access for development. Beach bungalows and small apartment buildings soon lined the Strand both north and south, including Clark’s Delux Cottages in 1928, which are known today as Roberts Cottages.

5. For beachgoers this concrete promenade afforded vehicles the opportunity to drive along the oceanfront with unobstructed views and direct beach access. Just as today, people relished a drive along The Strand, with their windows down and radios playing, to experience the sea breeze and gaze at the waves.

6. For a decade the only two entrances to The Strand were to the north at Sixth Street (Surfrider) and to the south at Wisconsin Avenue. Because of the activity centered around the bandshell and pier, more direct access from downtown was felt needed. In 1937 a “ramp” was built to bring vehicle traffic from Pacific Street by way of First Street (now Seagaze Drive).

7. In the 1930s and 1940s, an amusement park was set up just north of the pier where the present-day Beach Community Center now stands. The Strand made it convenient for carnival rides to be brought in. South of the pier, Hawaiian Village along the Strand was a popular attraction.

In the early years, parades were often routed from downtown along The Strand to culminate at

Military parade, north of the pier, circa 1930s.
Panoramic view of Cottage City, looking south, circa 1930s.

the bandshell and amphitheater. Today, events such as Iron Man and the annual Turkey Trot take advantage of this unique stretch of paved road along the Oceanside coastline.

8.

For years “cruising” The Strand was a popular activity for many. By the late 1970s, Strand traffic became a concern to both the City Council and Oceanside Police Department. In 1978, a traffic plan proposed to shift the traffic.

Ten Things You Didn’t Know About The Strand

Cars would enter the Strand at Wisconsin and travel north towards the pier. Southbound cars would enter at Ninth Street and both would meet at First Street. The traffic plan was approved in February 1978 to prevent cruising along the beachfront but just days later, the plan was backtracked due to dissenting council members and angry residents.

Strand traffic only increased during the summer and holidays, with cars traveling “bumper to bumper” on The Strand. In 1988 the congestion became critical when Oceanside Lifeguards became mired in traffic unable to respond to calls. On one occasion lifeguards had to nearly abandon their jeep to get to an emergency, and had trouble responding to two lifesaving calls. This prompted needed action and the police were authorized to shut down The Strand when traffic congestion created by Strand cruising became such that emergency vehicles could not operate.

9. One recourse was restricted travel that the City Council gave initial approval in May 1988. This limited the number of times a car could pass through a given checkpoint. Any vehicle that passed through a checkpoint within two hours after the driver had been issued a written warning could be ticketed. Repeated trips would mean repeated tickets. The cost to enforce the plan would require two full-time police officers, costing the city about $91,000 a year to man the checkpoints.

That year, cruising The Strand all but came to an end, although it was considered as much part of Oceanside as good weather, the pier, and surfing. Vehicles were banned from driving underneath the pier so traffic could only go south from First Street (Seagaze) to Wisconsin, and traffic coming from the Sixth (Surfrider) had to U-turn before the pier.

10.

Over the years, storms have taken their toll on the concrete roadway. High tides and large waves often litter The Strand with rocks. Portions of The Strand have collapsed at Wisconsin Avenue several times and the original curbing has been eroded. After serving the public for nearly 100 years, a large section of South Strand has been asphalted over its original concrete surface. Today, The Strand is enjoyed by pedestrians and cyclists, skaters and the occasional rollerblader, all sharing the road with vehicle traffic, along with dogs and baby strollers. Whatever the mode of transport, The Strand is a unique attraction and a beloved feature, and cruising it is still a favorite pastime.

Windchime Oceanside’s Boat

Hey Oceanside. We got you a boat, so let’s go sailing!

Windchime, a gorgeous 56’ sailing yacht and central figure in the Oceanside Harbor is now available for charter. Having lived in the harbor at the end of K dock, perched regally in front of the Broiler and across from the launch ramp for over forty years, makes her a bit of a big deal around the harbor. History lesson coming in five, but first, again, the good news.

WORDS: KATIE LALICATA

Windchime

With 1,800 square feet of boat and six bedrooms, how about a summer Catalina excursion? No problem!

She, meaning Windchime, is now available for charter! An amazing local family recently purchased her and proudly presents her to the Oceanside community. The feeling they experience when sharing her with friends and family can only be explained as whole hearted joy. Generous in spirit, they realized joy is better when shared, and so the obvious thing for them to do next was to go through the process to make her a charter boat that the whole community can now enjoy.

With that being said, it’s not quite as easy as 1-2-3. A special Coast Guard license is required to charter guests on a boat for hire. Fortunately, the family who purchased her has a long history not just around the Oceanside harbor, but around watercraft of all sizes. Particularly referring to the captain of this clan, Captain Johnny Taylor has quite a long list of maritime accolades and merits. Said Coast Guard license, the highest Coast Guard license you can get in fact, among them. With over 1.2 million nautical miles at sea, he can transport people on any size ship on any ocean in the world! So, the family business aboard the Windchime was a no-brainer.

Captain Johnny Taylor was born and raised in these very waters. He grew up guarding (yes, he was an Oside lifeguard), surfing, and hanging out on the beaches of Oceanside. After high

school, he graduated from the Maritime Academy in San Francisco. In a few short years, at the young age of 34, he had worked his way up to his first command and the honor and title of Captain. And not just any kind of Captain, no, but the kind who navigates the South China seas on some of the largest ships on the planet. With that in mind, this may go without saying, but the Captain and crew of Windchime are hand downs some of the best in business.

For the Taylor family, fun and safety are synonymous and imperative. So it’s serendipitous indeed that shortly after Captain Taylor retired from his career at sea to focus on spending more time at home with his family, this beauty of a boat, the Windchime, appeared. Being third generation boat owners (yes, his dad and grandpa also owned boats in this very harbor), it’s almost as if the same stars that sailors navigate by aligned with divine timing. Johnny told us “I have such a connection with the ocean, I couldn’t not have a boat.” To be able to share his love of the ocean and teach his girls about so many of the same lessons he has learned from the sea was a non negotiable upon returning home. And so a new chapter for the Taylor’s: the Windchime and the city of Oside begins.

With so many changes around town lately,

it seems that nowadays, an idea, an entrepreneurial vision actually rooted in community building, that doesn’t take away the original character or charm of Oside’s roots, is a true value add. The intention to enhance the magic that Oside already has is something Captain Taylor and his family have done masterfully. With the introduction of Windchime as “Oceanside’s Boat” — this story of keeping Oside as a place for the people, in a town where things seem to be in constant change, is truly a beautiful gift.

The changing face of Oceanside is evident, and that’s what makes the Windchime such an epic Oside Story. It’s something constant and familiar for the locals to anchor to and celebrate. Back in the late 1960’s, early 70’s, this vessel, a custom designed trimaran built for long range sailing, made her way down the 5 freeway to dock here. At the time, no one could have imagined she had arrived in her forever home. Why unimaginable? Because boats, especially big boats like Windchime, are built to sail and move. It’s borderline crazy that she (or any boat for that matter) could find a forever home, especially in a small harbor like Oceanside. Those facts, added up with her landing in the hands of a local family (and not some special interest, non present owner) only amplifies the grand allure of what’s happening

here in 2025. With that said, we officially reintroduce her to the community, as Windchime, “Ocenaside’s Boat” and a boat for charter.

The original owner kept her for his lifetime, from there she was sold just once more, and finally ended up in the hands of the Taylor’s in 2023. To change ownership only three times in over a 40 year span, and stay in the same location is unheard of, and yet another novel facet about the Windchime in the harbor that makes her both special and rare. It solidifies the legacy of her as a staple in the harbor. It’s even rumored that because she was such a one of a kind build, there was a parade leading to her inaugural launch. A rumor yes, but a fun one to perpetuate, nonetheless! She’s quite vintage in terms of a “hip” aesthetic, but has aged gracefully no doubt. Her custom woodwork and way she was built for speed remain bragging points to this day.

Another notable fact, for all the boat nerds out there, in 2006 she competed in the Newport to Ensenada race in which she beat America’s Cup Sailor Dennis Connor, a legend in the sailing community. Seaworthy and spectacular, the buzz around her is now exponentially enhanced by Captain Taylor and his community oriented, trusty crew.

Previously unavailable to the public, the fact that the whole community can now participate in

boat-life as if it really is their own is rad! Nothing like this version of boat charters is being done here in Oside. It’s really something wonderful that residents and tourists alike no longer have to go down south to enjoy a day floating and sailing around the friendly seas.

Beyond traditional charters, Windchime has many other epic offerings aboard her decks. With 1,800 square feet of boat and six bedrooms, how about a summer Catalina excursion? No problem! In addition to that, Johnny recently partnered with another local, Salt and Earth Collective, and together they are offering super fun Yacht Yoga experiences.

What else? Windchime is a great place for corporate wellness outings, as well as summer concert series. Yep. Live music free to anyone who wants to paddle, kayak or stop on by. What a perfect way to spend a sunny summer day! You can find Johnny on the interweb on Instagram, or even better yet in real life by strolling the decks on any given day. Give him a shout next time around the harbor and come see for yourself what the big boat fuss is all about.

Unarguably the best things about this story is the local love and pride the Taylors have for Oside and their authentic dedication to share

their joy of “Oceanside’s Boat.” Their family approach to caring for others and this community is second to none. So bring the kids, the parents, friends and get out on the water. You’ll be a part of the family—it’s special and the stoke effect is guaranteed.

Class or Event at Dear Tomorrow

Searching for a way to ignite a creative spark in your dating life?

Enter Dear Tomorrow, a community art house nestled inside a 117-year-old home. The brainchild of artist Ryder England, this creative sanctuary offers refreshingly hands-on ways to connect with your partner and with the local arts community.

Dear Tomorrow was born from a series of letters Ryder wrote to his future self and the world, as well as a deep desire to build a space for unfiltered, unconstrained creativity, for himself and fellow artists. Equal parts workshop, garden, studio, and gathering space, the house is now a hub for people looking to play, experiment, and make a beautiful mess.

While the space offers a vibrant lineup of workshops and events, including a block printing class taught by resident artist Genevra Munoa, a summer dinner series, makers markets, and galleries, one of the most magical date-night offerings is the plant-based dye workshop.

It begins in the garden, gathering marigolds, cosmos, and poppies. Strips of muslin linen are provided, but you’re also welcome to bring fabric to dunk into boiling cauldrons of colorful, flowerinfused water. As your creation simmers, listen to the soft music floating through the air, sip herbal tea, or cozy up with your partner on the couch with a friendly pup at your feet.

By night’s end, you’ll leave with hand-dyed linen in earthy purples, blues, and golds—plus a shared experience that’s way more romantic than checking your phones between courses. After all, “Nothing is more romantic than creating with your partner.”

More than just a workshop space, Dear Tomorrow, is a living, breathing love letter to creativity and community. With help from his partner Sarah Rewell-Carletto and an ever-expanding circle of Oside creatives, Ryder has built a third space for the soul, and one perfect for date night.

Creative Session at Raw Rhythm

For a date that gets things… a little dirty, head to Raw Rhythm in South O. What started as six pottery wheels in a Leucadian garage has grown into a full-fledged studio just blocks from the coast—without losing its cozy, homey vibe.

Owners Brad Chambers and partner Ella Abramušić built the studio to feel like an extension of their living room—warm, welcoming, and buzzing with creativity. Lime-washed walls, natural wood accents, and shelves lined with pieces in every stage of the process set the tone: relaxed, inspiring, and full of possibility.

Their two and a half hour creative sessions are perfect for date night. “They’re such a fun way to get silly, engage and connect with your partner,” Ella told us. After a quick demo on the basics of wheel throwing—centering your clay, building height, and shaping your piece—you’re let loose to get your hands dirty and make something entirely your own.

A killer playlist, the hum of spinning wheels, the splash of water on clay, and laughter punctuated by the occasional call for help fill the studio as couples lean into the process. Whether the pots stand tall or wobble and collapse into charming little blobs, the best part is getting out of your comfort zone and trying something new. As a plus, “the dirtier you get, the more productive you feel,” says Brad.

The session includes all the supplies you need, plus it offers the perfect opportunity to connect—with clay and with each other. At the end of class, you’ll have one to three pieces, which the team will professionally trim and glaze before firing for you. And, if you happen to also fall in love with the wheel while you’re there? Raw Rhythm offers longer workshops and memberships for those ready to dive even deeper into the rhythm of clay.

Comedy Night at Jazzy Wishbone

PHOTOS: KEVIN MIJARES

If your perfect date night involves a few drinks and a healthy dose of humor, Thursday’s comedy night at the Jazzy Wishbone might be just the ticket. Hosted by Kyle Dean of Everloving Comedy, the show takes place in one of Oceanside’s best-kept secrets: a back patio turned open-air comedy venue, tucked behind the cozy, music-filled front room of the Jazzy Wishbone. To find it, follow the buzz of voices and laughter through the shotgun-style house, past the bar, and out onto the string-lit patio where the jokes flow late into the night.

The atmosphere is casual and intimate— incense wafts through the air, chairs are pulled up around a small stage, and the crowd is welcoming. It feels like being at a friend’s house (if your friend happened to book a lineup of some of the best up-and-coming comedians from across Southern California).

“We wanted a space for comedians to mess around, let loose and have fun,” Kyle told us. And because Oceanside is the perfect midway stop between L.A. and San Diego, “We get comedians from some of the best venues in the area, including the Comedy Store.” The result is a lineup that’s dynamic, unfiltered, and tons of fun.

The show typically kicks off around 7:30pm. You’ll see a mix of openers, a headliner, and an open mic portion, making each night unique. Between sets, comics often hang out in the alley swapping jokes or prepping for their moment on stage. It’s relaxed, real, and brimming with creative energy.

It’s a great spot for a date night, especially if you’re looking for something a little different. Plus, “People just feel better after a comedy show,” Kyle said, and we couldn’t agree more. So, grab a table, order a drink, and snack on shareable plates like charcuterie, flatbreads, and pasta from the Jazzy Wishbone kitchen. The best part? It’s completely free.

Duffy Boat Rental at Oceanside Boat Rentals

PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER

There’s something undeniably romantic about being out on the water, so it’s no surprise that hopping aboard an electric Duffy boat to cruise the Oceanside harbor is a stand out choice for date night.

Oceanside Boat Rentals has been offering up fun ways to explore Oceanside’s quaint harbor since 1994. While they’ve got paddleboards, kayaks, and jet skis on deck, the Duffy boat is our favorite recommendation for a slow, dreamy date night. The 18-foot Duffy is especially cozy and beyond spacious for a party of 2.

Before setting off, you’ll sign a waiver and get a brief rundown of the “rules of the road,” mainly, ensuring your trip stays inside the harbor limits. Then you’re off—gliding past fishing boats, sail masts, and if you’re lucky, maybe even a dolphin or two. The boats come equipped with a table, cup holders, and Bluetooth capability (they’ll even lend you a speaker if you forget one), so you’re encouraged to pack snacks and a cooler full of your favorite libations—ideal for a harborfront toast as sea lions bark in the distance and flashes of bright orange Garibaldi flicker below the surface.

One of the best parts of the Duffy boat experience is how easy they are to operate. “No boating experience is required,” Arthur, the Oceanside location’s manager, told us. “You can think of them as golf carts of the water.” Since

they max out at wake speed—about five-to-six knots an hour—they’re quiet and relaxing, but just fast enough to catch a summer breeze.

“My favorite part is that you’re in control,” Arthur said. “You set the mood, the music, the pace—it’s your time on the water.”

During summer months, shop hours are extended until 7pm, so you can drift through golden hour with velvety water beneath you and the sky softening to shades of cotton candy pink above you. It’s the perfect kind of date night— unhurried, intimate, and a world away from life’s usual rush.

E-bike Rental at Ride O’Side

PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER

Want to feel like a kid again with your favorite person? Climb aboard an electric cruiser from Ride O’side and set out on a date that’s equal parts nostalgia and new adventure.

Ride O’side is run by the high-energy husbandand-wife duo Teddy and Crystal Dalsey, who set out to bring electric transportation to Oceanside— and nailed it. Their fleet of e-bikes are built for smooth cruising, but for an especially fun date.

Try the tandem fat tire e-bike (“It’s romantic,” Crystal said. “You get to hold on tight to your partner”), or go for the “Beachcomber”—a hybrid between an e-bike and scooter. It’s lightweight and comfortable because of the scooter platform, but throttle-powered and surprisingly zippy, maxing out at twenty miles per hour with pedal assist for extra mileage (and less work). With a range of up to 80 miles, you can loop the harbor,

cruise the strand, or even ride down to Carlsbad. “The feeling of riding down the coast on the ‘Beachcomber’ is just incredible. There’s no traffic, no gas, no parking issues. It’s all fun.”

Teddy gives each rider a quick safety rundown and even takes first-timers for a spin around the block. “Rule number one: Don’t go mental in the rental,” he grinned. Their aim? Good, clean, (safe) fun. “We want you to bring all your teeth home with you!”

They offer one, two, and three-hour rentals, plus a “Ride and Dine” deal: show proof you grabbed a bite locally and get the last hour of your 3 hour cruise free.

Want exploration inspiration? Try their e-bike scavenger hunt, complete with a map of Oceanside landmarks like the harbor’s love lock sculpture and the iconic Top Gun house.

After your ride, don’t forget to sign their wall of fame (“legal graffiti,” Crystal laughed). Whether it’s your first time on an e-bike or your 100th, Teddy and Crystal will make you feel right at home—and their enthusiasm is contagious. It’s an unforgettable way to explore Oceanside, with the wind in your hair and a smile on your face.

JACOB ‘PACO’ NUÑEZ

It’s hard to believe that something as simple as a little wooden toy can shape one’s future in such a profound manner. Skateboarding has always been a big part of Oceanside, and it has produced many professional skaters over the years. But, in the case of Jacob ‘Paco’ Nuñez, it gave him another route to pursue as videographer and editor.

Paco’s family roots began in the eastside Posole neighborhood. When Paco was just a little kid, he met his lifelong friend, Troy Rhoades, and they would skate all around Oside together. For years they honed their skills and, before they knew it, they were immersed in the world of

skateboarding where making fun little videos is a huge part of the culture.

Jacob became the videographer of the crew and started making custom edits of their sessions, eventually creating multiple full-features to represent their crew known as the Shep Dawgs. This crew was no joke and has produced some very established pros such as Riley Hawk and Rowan Zorrilla.

Fast forward to present times, and Jacob now travels the globe filming and editing for the best of the best. He works with NHS, which houses brands like Independent Trucks, OJ Wheels, Bronson Speed Co., Creature Skateboards, and

Santa Cruz Skateboards. His most recent project, War Cry, just dropped and features all of his OG friends. The premier was a couple months ago at our local venue, Pourhouse, and was a who’s who within the world of skateboarding. Not bad for a kid who just wanted to skate around town and document his friends having fun.

Paco loves his Oside roots and when he’s not on the road documenting skateboarding, you can find him rolling around town and enjoying good food, drinks, and friends in the place he loves the most, Oside baby!

CATS & CRYSTALS

Attention cat people! Nobody panic, but I fear our wildest dreams have come true. That’s right, Oceanside has officially become home to a “cat cafe.”

Cats & Crystals is an immersive space where we can surround ourselves in all things feline and magical. Owned and operated by founder Britney Ortiz and her partner, Zeth Satentes, Cats & Crystals have opened their first storefront, although this passion project has a long history that began with a small Etsy shop, which evolved into a traveling pop-up that has connected cat lovers all over the country.

As Oceanside residents, Britney and Zeth intentionally committed to the location because of the area’s character, walkability, and community that fit their vision of an interactive museum experience for both locals and tourists. Patrons have been pouring in from cities far and wide from both north and south for a chance to enjoy these beautiful and playful creatures in a quiet therapeutic environment. All visitors are welcome whether with the specific intention to adopt or to quietly enjoy a place to read during a lunch break. Also, many vacationing tourists who are missing their pets back home often sneak in to get a little quality kitty time.

Located next door, longtime local business and friend of The Osider, Jitters Coffee Pub brings the “cafe” element into Cats & Crystals. Visitors are encouraged to arrive a few minutes early to place their order before they enter, and it can be delivered to the sanctuary. Their website outlines all things you need to know before your visit, including rules, pricing, reservations, and cancellation policies.

The mystical gift shop offers locally made jewelry, candles, tote bags, and cat accessories with hidden secrets in every corner and endless photo opportunities. After reserving your time slot and purchasing your entry access sticker, you are ushered into the enchanting back room filled with toys and comfy seating where you can interact with the cats or just chill and watch the action. It’s up to the kitties how much attention you’ll receive, but if you make a connection with a special cat, you simply scan a QR code and complete the adoption application online. Cats & Crystals are partnered with Today Tomorrow Forever Animal Rescue, a non profit organization which facilitates the adoption process.

mother is such a big part of why I am an activist now. Cats & Crystals isn’t just a lounge or a gift shop. It’s a space filled with intention. Every item supports animal rescue, every cat has a story, and every visitor becomes a part of our mission.”

Britney’s inspiration began as a tribute to her mother. “My mom played a huge role in shaping the heart of our business. Growing up, we fostered cats together. She passed away a few years ago and continuing that rescue work became a way to honor her legacy. Every adoption, every saved life, is a tribute to her compassion.” Britney added, “My

BUENO WINE & GOODS

WORDS: KATIE LALICATA

PHOTOS: PRISCILLA IEZZI

Simple—minimal—BUENO. To do simplicity well is a novelty. A novelty worthy of praise in the case of Bueno Wine & Goods, a tapas and wine bar recently opened here in Oside.

The aforementioned words don’t just describe Bueno, but owner Brian Earls, as well. His business is a beautiful authentic representation of his heart and what he values in life. This is my vision, he told us, “to have a small intimate wine bar where people come hang out and have good bites and drink cool wines.” Simple and sincere.

Here at Bueno, the mood is chill; it’s quality wine, flavors, and ingredients presented in the most unpretentious way. Wine can be intimidating to the “common folk,” but Brian does an exceptional job by making often lost in translation wine concepts relatable to everyone. He’s created an approachable atmosphere for the whole community. Having spent his lifetime in the service industry, dishwasher to Ritz Carlton bartender to management to, finally, opening a small wine bar of his own; well, it’s the crown jewel.

As for the wine? It’s along the lines of minimal intervention, bio-dynamic, lots of organic, natural and carbonic wines. The shelves are decorated with French, Italian, and Spanish labels while peppered in with California wineries (mostly representing the carbonic wines). Short version of carbonic wine is that it is a 100% natural, old world French way to make wine. Bueno is suitable for wine nerds, but its modest casual approach reaches out to the greater local community in general.

It’s super fun to see a So-Cal surfer guy expound upon his love of good food and good wine. Being a self proclaimed everyday guy is a celebratory quality and one that makes him relatable. Beyond that, let’s not get this idea of ordinary confused with dull or uninspired. The flavors of the wine here are wide in variety and palate, and exquisite in flavor. The vibe is mellow in a trendy, rad kind of way, and his food presentations, second to none.

Beverages aside, his Spanish influenced tapas and small shareable plates are unique and equally legit. The Spanish sardine plate and meat and cheese board are divine. The Bocadillos and daily specials? Worth coming back for, no doubt. Again, Brian personifies that local small business feel which Oceanside embodies to its core. He’s the kind of guy that’s jovial, warm hearted, easy to hang out with, talk to, and support. For the most part he’s a one man show and knows most of the people who walk through the door on a first name basis. That feel of familiarity is refreshing in a community where localism is a fading art.

In the future, he’s planning to get a wine club going as well as hosting winemaker events. Beyond that, Bueno is the perfect stop for happy hour, afternoon bevy’s and bites before a dinner date or a low key-high vibe gathering with friends. Perfectly nestled in the middle of the Tremont Street Collective, it is the missing piece to this part of town and is hands down deserving of a try.

GIANNI’S PIZZA

WORDS: JAMEY STONE

If you’ve never been to Gianni’s Pizza, you really don’t know what you’re missing.

Located in a small strip mall opposite Home Depot in the Tri-City area of Oceanside, you will find owner Glen and his amazing staff doing great things in the form of all thing’s pizza.

You see, Glen Quaranta is somewhat of a mad scientist when it comes to working with pizza dough and organic veggie ingredients. Of course, he offers meat options as well, but where he really shines is creating fresh takes on classic Italian recipes. His dough recipes take many different forms based on his multiple fermentation processes. It’s crazy to

think that just one base dough can become a great classic pizza, rockaway pita, and focaccia.

Trust me when I tell you that they all have a different texture, flavor, and application. The Rockaway pita style sando is so light and tasty, it will blow your taste buds away. The bread is light and airy and, quite honestly, you could put any combination of fillings on this, and it’s an automatic winner.

Or, maybe you like sweet and savory, then the Get Figgy With It Pizza is the one for you.

Garlic olive oil crust, fig spread, prosciutto, mozzarella, arugula, balsamic drizzle, and goat cheese—hungry yet? Oh, and how do we forget

all of the great beers on tap to accompany these flavor bombs.

There is a reason we have featured Gianni’s in our pages more than once because, quite frankly, they deserve the love. The staff is friendly, the vibes are high, and the food is always great. Gianni’s recently celebrated their 32nd anniversary and with the food and service he offers, he will be here for even more years to come. I highly recommend taking the trip off the normal downtown set and checking them out. I promise that once you do, they will become a part of your dining rotation.

SONU KOREAN BBQ

WORDS: ALONDRA FIGUEROA

PHOTOS: ZACH CORDNER

Nestled in the mid-valley in the Mission shopping center off of Mission and El Camino Real, you will find the awe-inspiring Sonu Korean Barbeque restaurant. They specialize in All You Can Eat Korean, grill your own style, and it’s awesome! If you’re feeling adventurous and love all kinds of meat, let this be your special invitation to try them out.

Yes, Korean BBQ is very different from American style BBQ like sauced up ribs and chicken. This, ladies and gentlemen, is a whole different experience. One where you are in control and can be the master of your own personal grill.

For those of you that aren’t familiar with it, imagine all you can eat plates of fresh raw meat being delivered to your table that’s equipped with a stainless steel gas grill smack dab in the middle. You choose it, throw it on, and you get to cook it to your type of perfection. Not only is it delicious, but it is so much fun!

We had the pleasure of chatting with the always warm and friendly manager, New Year Tahir. She shared that Sonu has been in the valley since 2018. Lots of locals have been enjoying the varied types of high quality meat on their two-level menu. New Year also shared that guests come from all over Orange County and San Diego, even as far as LA! We can see why their menus are huge and always fresh.

There are two levels/prices, with each offering a variety of things. For example, the Deluxe menu features 31 items for $28.99 per person. This

menu features things like beef brisket, boneless short ribs, marinated pork belly, a Korean fave called Bulgogi, which is marinated meat (it is a must try!), as well as shrimp, and squid. Also, both menus offer sides like corn cheese, kimchi fried rice, and steam egg, which are a few of my favorite Korean specialties that are simply delicious!

Not to mention that as soon as you sit down, you are greeted with six or more sides and sauces to accompany your grilling. Things like freshly made kimchi that may be the best in town, pickled cucumber and sprouts, thinly sliced marinated fishcake, and pickled daikon radish. It is truly amazing the variety of tasty things they feature for such a decent price.

The Premium menu priced at $32.99 also features 31 items, but it is definitely a notch up with the American Kobe beef and Prime cut steak. They also up the ante in the seafood department by showcasing a fresh poke bowl, Korean spicy and teriyaki salmon, and fresh and cajun squid.

If that wasn’t enough, they also feature three types of Ramen: tonkatsu, spicy miso, and spicy beef! My fave soup they offer is their spicy seafood hotpot that has shrimp, clams and mussels, as well as squid, all in an incredibly flavorful and rich broth served in, you guessed it, a sizzling hotpot. Oh my

gosh! Your palate will be dazzled, I guarantee it! We tried so many things on our visit to Sonu and everything was remarkably fresh and delicious! My favorites are the Kobe beef, the prime cut steak, and the ever popular brisket! I really love that you can cook things yourself because I’m particular and like things a certain way. So, this is perfect because everyone at the table can order and cook the delicacies however they want.

It’s simply genius, so different and totally fun. You can’t be in a hurry, but that is all part of the experience, isn’t it? They serve beer, wine, sake, and soju, and their service is impeccable. Every time I visit, I am reminded why Sonu is the best Korean BBQ in our town. It gets busy so be sure to get on that waitlist if you are going on a Friday night, and you won’t be disappointed… hopefully you will be thrilled to grill!

1022 CAFE & GELATERIA

WORDS: KATIE TRIPPE

PHOTOS: KEVIN MIJARES

Tucked along Mission Avenue, 1022 Coffee & Gelateria is the kind of place that instantly feels like a favorite. Maybe it’s the light and airy space, with its calming color palette and vinyl spinning in the background, or how the shop blends Italian tradition with Oceanside charm. But more likely, it’s the passion behind the counter.

Lifelong friends, gastronomic enthusiasts, and Encinitas locals, Conor Goodman and Eric Levy opened 1022 Cafe & Gelateria in late 2022, after dreaming of launching a bar or restaurant of their own.

“We keep thinking, what could we do best?” Conor told us. “And the answer was coffee and gelato.”

The name 1022 refers to the sweet spot at which gelato is best stored: between 10 and 22 degrees Fahrenheit. To learn the craft, the duo trained under Eric’s cousin Nimrod, a renowned gelato maker and pastry chef in Italy. Using his recipes, they’ve built a menu of vibrant, rich flavors made fresh daily using traditional methods and top-tier ingredients.

Authenticity is at the heart of their process. Their gelato is stored in a pozzetti—a traditional Italian display case that uses sealed stainless steel

cylinders (carapinas) to minimize oxygen exposure and maintain precise temperature control, keeping the gelato deliciously creamy. Ingredients are kept simple and intentional, sourced with care. Pistachios come from Bronte in eastern Sicily (widely considered the best in Italy), hazelnuts come from Piedmont, and fruit is sourced locally, like the strawberries in their strawberries and cream gelato, picked just up the road at Williamson Farm.

You’ll find classics like the Mt. Etna Pistachio (Eric’s pick—equal parts salty, sweet and nutty, made with just pistachios, milk, and sugar), stracciatella (sweet cream with delicate chocolate shreds), and tiramisu on the chalkboard. “People would riot if we took those off,” Conor joked.

Plus, playful twists like Conor’s go-to, the caramel coffee & almond, made with organic house espresso, Italian almonds, and chocolate cookie crumbles. A rotating selection of seasonal flavors keeps things fresh and fun throughout the year. (Hot tip: keep an eye out for the banana-date flavor in summer).

While Nimrod and his family recipes may be “the genius behind the gelato,” Conor brings his expertise to the coffee. After studying coffee in Belgium and honing his espresso skills in Italy,

the duo decided to partner with Oceanside’s Libera Coffee to develop 1022’s custom house blend. Drawn in by owner Erik Medina’s antique Italian roasting machine and shared love of traditional espresso (“He does things the proper way, the Italian way,” Conor told us), the collaboration has become the backbone of their coffee program. The beverage menu blends Italian staples— macchiatos, lattes, and mochas—with specialty curated pour-overs and playful seasonal drinks like the “Spring in Hawaii” (a tropical mocha for the island lover), alongside a large selection of floral teas and ceremonial grade matcha sourced from Japan.

But beyond the menu, it’s the vibe that keeps people coming back. From the collab with neighbors like Curry & More (hello, mango lassi sorbet; summer in a cup) to the regulars that call 1022 their second home, their community connection runs deep. They are excited to keep growing with the town and with plans for two more San Diego county locations and a bakery in the works by 2026, Conor and Eric are just getting started. “Come in with an open mind,” Conor told us, and prepare to leave with a new favorite flavor—and maybe a pint for the road.

Owners Conor Goodman and Eric Levy
