FIRESMART PROJECT

Ice Safety Reminder - From Lifesaving Society

The Town of Fox Creek in conjunction with the Government of Alberta will be conducting FireSmart treatments, which include thinning, pruning, mulching of dead and downed trees and shrubs. This will be taking place 0.25 kms southeast of Fox Creek on the south side of Highway 43. This project is in line with FireSmart Canada’s principals which will help mitigate the risk and exposure of wildfire to the Town.

Despite the recent cold temperatures, ice surfaces are not always safe. Even thick ice may be weak, especially if it has frozen and thawed repeatedly or if it contains layers of snow. Ice can also pull away and/ or melt around shorelines and docks creating hazardous conditions where a person could fall through.

You can expect smoke to be seen from the highway, operations will be conducted in a manner as to minimize smoke. The smoke will be localized and shortlived. The FireSmart Project will be running from January 29th - early March 2018. For more information on FireSmart Principals and how you can reduce the risk of wildfire impacting your home at firesmart.ca. For more information, contact: Justin Amyot, justin.amyot@gov.ab.ca

Ice safety and weight-bearing properties of ice can be affected by many factors including: Thickness, under ice currents, age of the ice, pressure cracks and snow cover. Ice conditions can change quickly and dramatically. Council passed a motion to renew our Emer-

Thank you and congrats to those community members who worked hard to make this happen! Council would like to thank all the members of the Emergency Service Crews who assisted with the Hwy 43 pileup on Dec. 23, 2017. A job well done in keeping everyone safe!
