Emi Elisabeth Moore was selected to give this year’s Student Welcome speech.

Readington Middle School held the Eighth Grade Promotion Ceremony on June 16 at Hunterdon Central Regional High School Field House.

Dylan Chipelo, Student Council Vice-President, led the Pledge of Allegiance. Emi Moore gave the Student Welcome, and Tracy Rasare and Caroline Renjilian gave the Class Reflections. Also speaking were Superintendent Dr. Barbara Sargent, Board of Education President Cheryl Filler, and Principal Sharon Moffat.

Readington Rhapsody, conducted by Alyssa Young and accompanied by Emily Bengels, provided choral selections. Counselor Patricia Loughlin presented certificates.

Readington Community Theatre Auditioning for “Inherit the Wind�

Readington Community Theatre will hold auditions for its fall production of the well-known courtroom drama “Inherit the Wind,� on Saturday, July 9, from 10 a.m. to noon, and Sunday, July 17, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the downstairs club room at the Polish American Club, 29 Kline Blvd., Whitehouse Station.

Readington School District to Upgrade Facilities over Summer

The Readington Township School District will begin several facility projects now that the school year is over. As a result of a successful school referendum vote in January, the school district will proceed with driveway and parking lot improvements at Readington Middle School and Holland Brook School, stairway reconstruction at Readington Middle School, and stairway reconstruction at Three Bridges School.

We are thankful to our community for supporting this important work. The school referendum allows

the district to be eligible for a nearly 40% reimbursement from the state; no taxes have been raised as a result of this referendum.

One of the benefits in repaving the parking lots at Readington Middle School and Holland Brook is that the fleet of school buses can be relocated from the front lawn of the middle school to a more secure side lot. The side parking lot will be expanded, allowing the buses to be parked on blacktop. Improvements to the new parking area will include new lighting, electrical outlets for bus block heaters, and new landscaping.

The student entrance to Readington Middle School will be repaired, as will the stairway exits for the Media Center and Nurse’s Office at Three Bridges School. A full repair of these stairs will include redesign and replacement of the steps and landing areas, along with new safety railings and handrails.

Once this critical work is completed, the district will begin installation of rooftop solar panels at Three Bridges and Readington Middle Schools, and solar ground arrays at Readington Middle and Holland Brook Schools. This exciting work will help the district to reduce electricity expenses, provide relevant teaching opportunities for our students in the areas of math, science, and ethics, and help the district to further reduce its carbon footprint.

Focusing primarily on human behavior and temperature setting protocols, the district has already achieved extremely positive savings in energy. For the December 2014 – November 2015 time frame, Read-

Readington Middle School Student Council members attended the New Jersey Association of Student Councils’ Spring Awards Program at Six Flags Great Adventure on June 1, where they received a $1,000 club award in recognition of their donation to this year’s NJASC State Charity, Hope Loves

Company. Founded in 2012, the charity provides support to children who have parents or grandparents living with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also called Lou Gehrig’s disease. The Student Council raised the donation through ticket and T-shirt sales for the annual Lip Sync event.

by Julia Wickman As the end of the school year drew near, most students planned out their summer vacations and fantasized about the beach. But about 100 students of Hunterdon Central’s upper band and orchestra ensemble focused as much as ever. On Sunday, June 12, and Monday, June 13, these students were bused into New York City to prepare and perform at the world-renowned Carnegie Hall.

In order to prepare for their 45 minutes in the spotlight, Hunterdon Central musicians headed into Midtown Manhattan on Sunday to participate in a clinic with professional musician advisors.

Students were taught about how to improve their tuning, dynamics and tone, all of which they carried with them into the next day for their actual performance in Carnegie Hall.

Joining the ranks of many highly respected musicians, Hunterdon Central’s Advanced

Orchestra and Wind Symphony performed at Carnegie Hall on Monday as part of the Symphonic Series for Bands and Orchestras.

The six-hour event featured eight other high school bands from across the country. Each band performed about 45 minutes with Hunterdon Central performing right at the beginning of the second half.

As a reminder of their performance at Carnegie Hall, students received certificates from Manhattan Music and water bottles, and collectively received a framed marquee poster, which will be displayed in the music building. Although many students said that this phenomenal experience flew by, it definitely goes into the books as one to remember.

On a sidenote, the marching band drum majors and color guard captain were named for the next school year. Hannah Mills and Amy Kwan, both from Readington, were named drum majors.

Haley Brobst of Readington was named captain of the color guard.

Congratulations to all three of these Readington natives, and we look forward to seeing you during football games in the fall.

Monday Mornings at the Museum Program Returns

Readington Museums offers Monday Mornings at the Museum, a hands-on summer program for kids ages 5-12, on four consecutive Mondays – July 11, 18, 25 and Aug. 1. The programs run between 10 a.m. and noon, and are held at the Bouman-Stickney Farmstead, 114 Dreahook Rd., Stanton.

Each week children will have a short history or nature lesson and then create a craft project, with a new theme offered each week. The first program will be candle and lemonade making and learning an 18th c. English dance. Other programs will include tin smith designs, butter making, or critter crafts. The cost of each program is $8 per child, per day.

Fort Wins GOP Spot Readington Township Mayor Betty Ann Fort won the Republican nod for one three-year term on the Township Committee in the June 7 Primary Election. Fort received 1,724 votes out of 3,082 votes cast. Opposing Republican Larry Lelah received 1,358 votes.

There was one Republican write-in vote and 13 Democrat write-in votes.

Scott Scammell, who ran an unsuccessful campaign for Township Committee last year, filed as an independent on June 7. His name will appear on the ballot for the November committee race.

cused on friendship. Back in October, students in the fourth and fifth grade school were invited to enter the annual yearbook cover contest by creating an original design depicting friendship and including a bobcat, the school’s mascot.

This year’s front cover winning design, a smiling bobcat encircled by kids joining hands around the globe, was created by fifth grader Viktoria Stefanik; the back cover was designed by fifth grader Alexa Edmonds. Honorable mention designs, which were included inside the yearbook, were created by fifth graders Amelia Adamitis and Molly Arkoulakis and fourth grader Mary Pijanowski.

Readington Reformed Church members thank the community, sponsors, volunteers and participants of two spring fundraisers. The church held an Art Auction on March 11 at the Readington Volunteer Firehouse and its 3rd Annual Faith & Fitness Walkathon on April 23 at Pickell Park. The church was able to raise more than $12,000 to fund its ministries and donate 20% of the proceeds to two local organizations: Family Promise of Hunterdon County (familypromisehc.org) and 52 Reasons to Love a Veteran (52reasonstoloveavet.org), each receiving $1,231.

Readington Starfish is seeking volunteers to sort, bag and deliver food for the Fourth of July. Bring a friend and join Starfish at any of the times listed below. It is not necessary to sign up. All activities take place at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Route 523 and Pulaski Road, Whitehouse Station.

Stevens Historian, County of Hunterdon The Wallace House Museum, open to the public and located in Somerville, is a beautifully furnished National Register house that served as the headquarters of General and Mrs. George Washington during the winter and early spring of 1778-79. This was the time of the Middlebrook Encampment when Washington stretched his troops out all along the foothills of the Watchung mountains. Washington’s generals moved in with local patriot families – the whole area was alive with movement of troops. Accordingly, the “Artillery Park� was established on the Somerset Hills. Interestingly, the archaeological discovery of this long lost historic site took place during the 1980s when the Hills development in Pluckemin was being built. “Artillery Park� included housing for officer training as well as a parade ground, dining facilities and a ballroom. It was considered the predecessor of West Point.

With the British Army encamped in New Brunswick, a short ride away, Washington’s concern for the safety of his army was paramount. The dilemma, in an era devoid of public communication - no telephones, computers, or iphones -

was how to alert the soldiers quickly before they were overrun. Using their Yankee ingenuity, a plan was devised to make beacons and arrange them on the highest spots from Somerset County across Hunterdon, all the way down to Princeton. Beacons were log towers 16 feet square and 8 feet high. If the British approached, the nearest beacon would be set afire thereby alerting the Militia to assemble to prepare for battle and the populace to seek shelter. When sighting the first fire, all beacons down the line were to be set afire. The first eight beacons were constructed in two days by Continental soldiers. The next 15 were built by farmers and Militia men.

High upon Readington’s Cushetunk Mountain was beacon #16.

It was easily in sight of the Dutch Reformed Church at Readington, a church whose Pastor, Rev. Jacob Hardenbergh, preached such bitter condemnation of the British that there was a price on his head.

Readington Village was indeed a hot bed of patriotism where the Militia needed to be warned should there be a confrontation.

Fortunately for all, the beacons were never put to use, but, should there have been a British invasion, we were prepared.

The Readington Environmental Commission hosted a Rain Barrel workshop along with the Raritan Headwaters Association on May 22 in the preserved Ann Reno Barn located at the Cushetunk Nature Preserve. Mara Tippett, an AmeriCorps NJ Watershed Ambassador, led the program. Rain barrels conserve water and prevent stormwater runoff. For each inch of rain that falls on 500 square feet of roof and flows into the gutter and downspout, 300 gallons of water can be collected. A dozen barrels were then prepared and taken home for installation by enthusiastic residents.

Looking Back‌Readington Hot Bed of Patriotism during Middlebrook Encampment

After writing and presenting a play about middle school bullying back in seventh grade, Allison Vandal decided to take her message further. This year, throughout eighth grade, she explored the humor and attention span of younger students and wrote a play for the primary school audience. In her play, a diverse group of students learn about their commonalities when hurled off into the age of the dinosaurs.

Allison directed the new play and, with the support of her school principal and the RMS Masquers club, took the show on the road to Three Bridges and Whitehouse Schools on May 27. After the performance, the cast of 10 eighth graders offered a question and answer session with the kindergartners through third graders. The goal of the presentation is to stop stereotyping before it starts.
