Primary Election is June 6 . . .

Real Republican Showdown

Republican newcomers have waged a familiar battle trying to unseat incumbents John Albanese and Jonathan Heller in the June 6 Primary Election. Andrew Saad and Antoinette Riordan, backed by the township’s newest committeeman Vincent Panico and Hunterdon’s GOP, have waged an inexplicable smear campaign against committeemen Albanese and Heller accusing the Republicans of being liberal Democrats.

The four Republican candidates are seeking the GOP nomination for two seats on the Readington Township Committee.

The mud being slung is identical to the goo used to unseat longtime GOP public servant Betty Ann Fort in the last Primary. For example, one recent press release from Saad and Riordan, who call themselves “real Republicans,” states: “Following in line with their predecessor, Betty Ann Fort, Heller and Albanese continue to show their Democrat ways.”

Meanwhile, real Democrats Kristina Garcia and Marvin Fields are running unopposed.

The typically earnest, exurban Township Committee of do-good Republicans has been shaken to the core over the past year. Movement away from the status quo began with the takedown of Fort and continued with the removal of several longtime volunteers from boards and committees.

Along with Township Committee candidates, voters will select their party’s candidates for State Senate, General Assembly, Surrogate, and Board of County Commissioners.

Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

On April 26, Three Bridges School hosted a community celebration of the Readington School District’s continuing commitment to sustainability as part of Earth Day. The event brought together students, families, Readington School staff, Readington municipal partners, and local community members to share in the success of green initiatives in the district.

While Earth Day began in 1970, the Readington School District’s green initiatives began in 2010 with an initial focus on energy conservation as part of cost saving efforts.

The success of that energy efficiency program went far beyond saving hundreds of thousands of dollars and became a springboard for environmental education, resource

conservation, and health and wellness that are part of the culture in the district today. The community was invited to celebrate not only the most recent achievements of Readington Schools including Sustainable Jersey silver certification for all schools, a Digital Star award for Whitehouse School, and Best of NJ Farm to School Award for Three Bridges School, but also to recognize the legacy of awardwinning sustainability programs and education in the district. The many partnerships related to green initiatives were also highlighted at the event including a student curated presentation about community partnerships that brought a bioswale to Three Bridges School’s water detention basin. 2023-2024 School Budget Highlights

On April 25, 2023 the Board of Education approved the final budget for the 2023-2024 school year. The new budget reflects the following district goals:

• Present a fiscally responsible budget at the 2% state-imposed cap on the tax levy with allowable adjustments aligned to the district mission and vision;

• Prepare for enrollment increases from new housing developments;

• Balance class size guidelines with scheduling efficiencies;

• Enrich students’ academic experiences;

• Plan for cost increases due to inflation (e.g. higher cost of fuel, labor, and supplies);

• Implementation of the district’s Strategic Plan, which includes goals related to inquisitive learning, partnerships, and social awareness.

Staff and program highlights in the 2023-2024 budget include:

• All educational programs and class sizes are maintained in accordance with district policies;

• A continuation of 1:1 chromebook/tablet initiative for students in K through 8th grade;

• Savings through shared services and cooperative purchasing agreements with Branchburg, Hunterdon County E.S.C., the Township of Readington, among others;

• Expansion to four police officers through a Township of Readington shared service;

• Additional grade-level teacher at Holland Brook School and elementary art teacher due to increased enrollment from new housing developments;

• New behavioral disabilities program teacher and preschool disabilities program teacher;

• Expansion of part-time English language learner teacher to full-time;

• Enriched student curriculum materials, resources and programs, including for environmental sustainability;

• Student intervention services for learning acceleration due to the COVID-19 pandemic, funded by federal grant programs;

• Additional mental health services, equity and inquiry learning consulting, funded by federal grant programs;

• Continued development of strategic plan work.

Further, the district plans for the following capital projects having no impact on next year’s tax levy:

• Replacement of roofing sections and HVAC at Readington Middle School;

• Bathroom additions at all elementary schools;

• Solar expansion and LED lighting replacement;

• Various security enhancements including phone and camera upgrades;

• Boiler and exterior door repairs;

• Outdoor garden upgrade at Whitehouse School and water bottle filling stations at Readington Middle School;

• Staff lounge improvements at all school buildings;

• Replacement and installation of information technology equipment to better support the student learning environment; and

• Enhancement of safety, health and wellness through multiple maintenance projects.

Readington Township School District’s total budget will be $39.7 million. This year, the district budgeted to receive $2.4 million in state revenue, and approximately $3 million from other sources such as tuition, interest, and grants which will reduce the impact to taxpayers. The remaining portion of our budget is funded locally and, as demonstrated in the chart below, represents a 2.642% increase in the school tax levy. The district was able to increase taxes over the 2% cap with an allowable health care adjustment.

Boy Scouts and Girls Scouts worked side by side at the Annual Readington Township Tree Seedling Giveaway on April 22. Scouts helped retrieve order forms from residents’ cars and returned filled orders throughout the event.

Boy Crossing Main Street Hit By Car

The Readington Township Police Department reported that on Friday, May 12, just after 4 p.m., emergency services were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident involving a pedestrian near the intersection of Main Street and Nelson Street in Whitehouse Station. Officers arrived to find a 12-yearold boy lying in the roadway next to his bicycle, unconscious. According to several accounts, the boy was traveling west on his bicycle and as he attempted to cross Main Street, he was struck by a 2007 Nissan Sentra. The driver was a 19 year-old woman from Readington Township. The boy was treated at the scene by the Whitehouse Rescue Squad and paramedics from Hunterdon Medical Center. He was transported to the baseball fields on James Street where he was flown to Morristown Medical Center by Atlantic Air One.

At press time, a Go Fund Me account “JohnB.Strong” was set up by Jennifer Trojan of Whitehouse Station.

A preliminary investigation revealed that neither speed nor distracted driving was a factor in the crash. The driver, who remained at the scene and cooperated with police, was not issued a summons. The road was closed for approximately three hours while the scene was processed. This incident is still under investigation and witnesses are encouraged to contact Corporal Wester by calling 908-534-4031 or emailing him at gwester@readingtonpolice.org.

Police said in a statement, “While it is unfortunate that this incident occurred during our pedestrian safety education and outreach campaign, it will only strengthen our resolve to make Main Street safer for all.”

On April 27, Readington Township School Board members Jodi Bettermann and Elizabeth Fiore received recognition from New Jersey School Boards Association (NJSBA) for completing the New Board Member Boardsmanship Certification program. They were the only two Board of Education members in Hunterdon County who earned this award.

This program recognizes school board members in their first two years of office who attend county and state-wide meetings, accrue credits for classes in governance and public education, and complete professional development opportunities presented by NJSBA. Bettermann and Fiore were presented the award by Hunterdon County Field Service Representative, Gwen Thornton, at the April NJSBA Hunterdon County Celebration Dinner.

“It is an honor to serve with both Ms. Bettermann and Ms. Fiore. Their comments and decisions are thoughtful and they clearly understand their roles. Their enthusiasm serving on the board is a great service to the community of Readington,” said Board President Carol Hample.

Smart NJ branded shopping bags will also be distributed. Local police will reinforce speed limits, distracted driving laws, and the “stop for pedestrians in crosswalks” law.

Street Smart NJ is one of many initiatives in New Jersey working to help the state reach its goal of zero pedestrian fatalities. The campaign reminds people that everyone has a role to play in making our streets safer. Drivers need to obey speed limits and stop for people crossing; people walking need to use crosswalks (marked and unmarked) and cross with the signals; and everyone needs to avoid distractions.

Why do bees hum?

Because they can’t remember the words.

Did you hear about the guy from Bridgewater who stayed up all night to see where the sun went?

It finally dawned on him.

What has six legs, is green and brown, and can kill you?

A pool table falling out of a tree.

What did one elevator at the medical office building say to the other elevator?

“I think I’m coming down with something.”
