Readington Township Memorial Day Parade May 29

Readington Township Committee & Readington Recreation Liaison

The Readington Township Memorial Day Parade will return this year on Monday, May 29. So polish up your marching shoes and get ready to join in!

The parade route will be the same as years past, from King’s Plaza Shopping Center along Main Street in Whitehouse Station to the Readington Township Municipal Building.

All clubs, churches, scout organizations, sports teams, music and dance groups, floats, veterans, businesses, farm tractors, antique cars and military vehicles, and emergency services are welcome to join in paying tribute to those who gave their lives in service to our country.

We’re looking forward to a great parade and lots of spectators.

Right after the parade and flag ceremony at the Municipal Building, refreshments and music will be available at Pickell Park for participants and spectators.

If your group is interested in participating in the parade, contact readingtonparade@comcast.net as soon as possible.

Hunterdon Named NJ’s Healthiest County

Hunterdon County Commissioner Director Zach Rich announced at the April 4 Board of Commissioners meeting, “Hunterdon County has again received independent verification that our county is one of the healthiest places to live. Overall, New Jersey is ranked higher in health outcomes than the national average, and it is always rewarding to have third party verification that our county is at the top of the list for being the safest, best, and healthiest place to live and work within the state.”

The ranking is compiled by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute with support provided by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. It provides local communities with data on more than 90 health-influencing factors such as housing, education, jobs, and access to quality health care.

Hunterdon County is at the top of the list, followed by Morris, Bergen, Sussex, Middlesex, Monmouth, Union, Ocean, and Hudson, in the top 10.

Readington School District Highlights Mental Health Strategies

Mental Health Awareness Month is typically celebrated in May, but for Readington Township Public Schools, it is a focus and priority throughout the entire school year. It is our district’s mission to empower members of our community to lead purposeful lives with integrity, to cultivate a spirit of discovery, and to embrace connections in our diverse, global society. In order to achieve this, mental well-being and social emo-

tional development are at the core of our efforts. Recognizing Mental Health Awareness Month serves as a reminder to us all to make sure that we take care of ourselves first before we take care of others. If we are not well, we are unable to model for young people, appropriate and healthy ways to face conflicts, problem-solve, build and maintain strong relationships, and self-manage strong emotions.

It is known that the effects of the Covid-19 shutdown have left serious scars on the mental health and well-being of children and adults alike. According to the American

School Counselors Association (ASCA), while 1 in 5 people will experience mental illness over the course of their lifetimes, everyone will face challenges that can and will affect their mental health. In fact, multiple studies show that rates of depressive disorders and anxiety among school-age children is on the rise. I reference these statistics to emphasize the critical importance for remembering and recognizing Mental Health Awareness Month. May this serve as a reminder that attention to mental health and social emotional learning in schools matters, so much so, that it can save lives.

Below you will find some simple, but powerful recommendations from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to support the mental health of yourself and those around you. May

you be happy, healthy, peaceful, and full of joy as we move into warmer weather.

• Get enough sleep.

• Exercise regularly. Just 30 minutes a day of walking can boost mood and reduce stress.

• Build a social support network.

• Set priorities. Decide what must get done and what can wait.

• Say no to new tasks if they are putting you into overload.

• Think positive. Note what you’ve accomplished at the end of the day, not what you’ve failed to do.

• Try relaxation methods. Mindfulness, meditation, yoga, or tai chi may help.

• Seek help. Talk to a mental health professional if you or someone you know feels unable to cope, has suicidal thoughts, or use drugs or alcohol to cope.

The last motor vehicle collision at the troublesome intersection of Routes 523 and 629 was on May 18, 2022, according to a Readington Township Police Department announcement at the end of March.

The Police Department credits safety measures such as a speed reduction in 2020, a reconfiguration of lane channelization in 2021, and the barrier placed at Springtown Road last year, as well as increased traffic enforcement and the motoring public’s attentiveness. In comparison, the junction had been averaging 11 crashes per year leading up to the commencement of improvements.

Cash or personal check only. All proceeds will benefit the nonprofitHCHS’s mission to preserve, protect and share Hunterdon County’s history.

Six gardens located throughout the township will be welcoming visitors. Included are private gardens of magnificent scale and small ones with historic interest or personal imprint. Kitchen gardens and horse pastures highlight some of the locations. Of special interest is a large property where both architecture and landscape comply with sustainable requisites. It has been an ongoing project since 1995.

Advance tickets are $40 until June 9, at 9 p.m., and $50 on the day of the tour. Tickets are limited and can be purchased online through PayPal at www.tewksburyhistory.net.

The license renewal allows Verano to operate a cannabis extraction operation, cannabis storage, and cannabis shredding operations. The local license renewal is required for the renewal of the facility’s state Cannabis Commission License in May.

Residents complained over the course of a year that the plant emitted noxious odors and the state Department of Environmental Protection fined Verano. Verano then requested an administrative law hearing on the DEP’s decision and said it would prioritize working on the ventilation and air handling systems. The DEP approved the company’s Certificate to Operate Cannabis Processing in January.

Newcomers vs. Incumbents in GOP Primary Election

Newcomers

Antoinette Riordan and Andrew Saad

Readington Township Committee candidates Antoinette Riordan and Andrew Saad have secured the official Republican line in the June 6 Primary Election. This is a significant milestone in their campaign “to promote fiscal responsibility, protect Readington’s community, and preserve the town’s unique character,” the candidates wrote in a statement.

“As we move forward in the campaign, we want to remind all Republicans to vote on June 6 in the Primary. It is essential to have your voice heard in selecting the candidates who will represent our community,” said Riordan. She is a lifelong resident of Readington Township and is “passionate about preserving the farming and family community where she has raised her children.”

The candidates wrote that they are “committed to promoting fiscal responsibility, reducing debt and taxes, protecting Readington from overdevelopment and high-density housing, and preserving the town’s rural character.”

“We believe that our message resonates with the values and prin-

ciples of the Republican Party, and we are grateful for the opportunity to carry the official Republican line,” said Saad. He and his wife recently moved to Readington and were “drawn to the town’s open space, excellent schools, and serene atmosphere.”

Incumbents

John Albanese and Jonathan Heller

Readington Township Committee members John Albanese and Jonathan Heller are running jointly in the June Primary for the Republican nomination for the two open Readington Township Committee positions.

Following is their platform:

• For fiscal restraint and finding ways to keep tax rates stable and seek ways to lower tax bills via new revenue sources

• For continuing to lower Readington’s debt

• For providing residents with high quality services

• For continuing the smart planning policies that have made Readington a great place to live

• For increasing the public use of our preserved green spaces

• For preserving our rural lifestyle

• For supporting our Police Department and Emergency Services community

Albanese moved to Readington with his family in 1980 and attended Readington School from 5th through 8th grades and graduated from Hunterdon Central High School. He returned to Readington with his wife in 2002. He took his seat on the Township Committee in 2018. He was Mayor in 2021, Deputy Mayor in 2019 and had served on the Readington Township Planning Board for seven years. He is an active volunteer in Township youth sports. He is proud to call Readington home with his wife and two sons (11 and 14 years old) and works as a telecommunications network planner for the New York City metro area. Heller and his wife have lived in Readington for 29 years and have two children. He served as Mayor in 2020 and Deputy Mayor in 2021 and 2022. He is a current member of the Environmental Commission and Water Watch Committee. He previously served on the Readington Township Planning Board, Open Space Advisory Board and Board of Adjustment. RVCC Board of Trustees Approves Tuition for Fall

The Raritan Valley Community College Board of Trustees has approved a $6 per credit increase in tuition.

The new tuition of $180 per credit would take effect for the

Fall 2023 Semester. For the average full-time student taking 30 credits during the academic year, tuition would increase by $180 for the year. For the average part-time student taking 12 credits during the academic year, tuition would increase by $72.

“After the unrelenting challenges of the past few years, it’s even more critical that RVCC remains a viable educational option for the

community. We have worked hard to keep tuition at a relatively low level, while still preserving our core mission of providing an innovative, affordable education for our students,” said RVCC President Michael J. McDonough.

The College’s FY 2024 budget will be voted on at the May 2 Board of Trustees meeting.

Historical Society Hosts Author Maxine Lurie

Maxine Lurie will be the guest speaker at the Tewksbury Historical Society meeting on May 21 at 1 p.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church Christian Education Building, 16 Miller Ave., Oldwick. The meeting is open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

Lurie will discuss her newest book, “Taking Sides in Revolutionary New Jersey: Caught in the Crossfire.” The American Revolution lasted eight years, a “civil war” where men and women, blacks, whites, native Americans all found themselves on a middle ground. Family, religion and politics factored in their choices. Lurie analyzes the difficulties faced by the prisoners of war, the refugees produced by the conflict and the loyalists. Their stories are interesting and illustrate how these people were literally in the “crossfire.”

Lurie holds a BA from Alfred University, an MA from the University of Rochester, and a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin. She has taught at Marquette University, Rutgers University, and Seton Hall University; and has helped conduct seminars for K-12 teachers. An Early American historian, she has taught and written about New Jersey history for over 30 years. She is active with research projects, and in the New Jersey history community. She is the author of scholarly

articles; edited The New Jersey Anthology (1994, 2010); was co-editor-in-chief with Marc Mappen of The Encyclopedia of New Jersey (2004); worked with Peter O. Wacker and Michael Siegel on Mapping

New Jersey (2009); with Richard F. Veit editing New Jersey: A History of the Garden State (2012); and writing Envisioning New Jersey: An Illustrated History (2016).

Put on your dancing shoes for a night of family fun as the Readington Museums hosts its bi-annual Barn Dance on May 13 from 7 to 9 p.m. The dance will be held inside the 18th-century Wade-Wyckoff Barn at the Bouman-Stickney Farmstead located at 114 Dreahook Rd. in the Stanton section of Readington Township, (for GPS use Lebanon).

The Readington Museums received an operating support re-grant from the Hunterdon County Cultural & Heritage Commission, with funds from the New Jersey Historical Commission, a division of the Department of State.

Juanita Hummel of the Washington Crossing Audubon Society will lead this hour-long birding event where participants will walk through charming open meadows and into woodlands along the Lockatong Creek to discover spring birds in Hunterdon County. She’ll stop at several habitat sites and discuss why preserving ZegaLockatong was important for the local bird habitat.

The program is free, but reservations are strongly encouraged by

emailing dave@hunterdonlandtrust.org. The Zega-Lockatong Preserve is located on RosemontRave Rock Road in Delaware Township. The walk will begin at

the kiosk near the preserve’s parking area.

Hunterdon Land Trust has preserved more than 11,500 acres since forming in 1996.

Readington’s Community Garden is off to a great start for the 2023 growing season. Beginning in early April, the gardeners got together on Saturday mornings, spread compost and got the rows ready for early crops; starting with kale, lettuce and cabbage. Once the frost date passes in early May, tomato, peppers, spinach and zucchini are added. Located at the scenic Dobozynski Farm Park, West Woodschurch Road, the garden has supplied residents with fresh organically grown vegetables. New members are welcome. Share the work, share the harvest. For more information, visit the Readington Township website. –Submitted by Julia Allen
