New Year’s Tradition Begins–On New Year’s Day, Readington Township established a new tradition: A

“First Day Hike.” A group of 35 hardy souls met at Pickell Park on Jan. 1 and hiked up to the top of Cushetunk Mountain. Hikers agreed they were happy to be starting the New Year off with some exercise on a sunny afternoon. Readington Township’s monthly Open Space Walks are held on the third Sunday of each month, year round, starting at 1 p.m., and usually last about two hours. Check Readington’s website or The Readington News Upcoming Events section each month for the location. The hikes are suitable for all ages, kids have a great time, and dogs on a leash are welcome. For more information, contact John Klotz, member of the Open Space Advisory Board, at jwklotz@embarqmail.com.

Three Bridges students hold up their new paperback dictionaries, surrounded by visiting Rotarians. —Submitted by David Livingston

Whitehouse Rotary Club members distributed dictionaries to 160 third grade students at Whitehouse School and Three Bridges School during November. The Rotary has provided personal dictionaries to all third graders in Readington Township every year for more than 10 years. Rotarian Cathy Denning organizes the project with the help of other club members, who visit each school to introduce the students to their new resource.

Club members have found that the children are excited to receive the dictionary because it not only includes 35,000 words but also includes information on all U.S. Presidents, sign language, the planets, Roman Numerals, and the longest word (1900+ letters). The students were challenged by Rotarian David Livingston to find facts using their new paperback. He asked them to use the table of contents to find answers to such questions as: “Find

the names of three U.S. presidents who were born in 1946” and “What is the longest word and what does it mean?” They were challenged to take their dictionaries home to see if they could stump their families with questions they made up. Club members were surprised, in an age of computers, digital books, X-boxes, and cell phones, at how excited and enthusiastic students were to receive a paperback.
