Stoneleigh Stables of Branchburg Wins Gold Medal Horse Farm Award

Doren

Helen Van Doren of Branchburg celebrated her 100th birthday on Dec. 29 with a small family gathering.

Born in Bunnvale, NJ, she has lived in the North Branch section of Branchburg for over 66 years. Her husband of 54 years, Ben Van Doren, passed away in 2010.

Helen has three children, Elaine Schappell (Gerald) of Lenhartsville, PA, Bill Gulick (Betty) of Hampton, NJ and Vanessa Van Doren of North Branch. She has five grandchildren - Kelly Gulick, Brent Gulick, Casey Cameron, Rebecca Burns and Stephanie Santos, and five great granchildren - Kyle Apgar, Brendan Gulick, Avery Burns, Weston Burns and Penelope Santos. Helen also has three stepsons - Bud Van Doren, Jack Van Doren, Richard Van Doren along with 12 stepgrandchildren and 26 great grandchildren!

Stoneleigh Stables of Branchburg, owned by Chrisie and Chris Van Cleef, won the Gold Medal Horse Farm award for 2022. The award, part of the New Jersey Equine Environmental Stewardship Program, gives recognition to outstanding equine farms for their dedication to environmental sustainability and management.

Stoneleigh Stables is located on 23 acres off Vanderveer Avenue. It currently features an outdoor riding arena, multiple grazing paddocks with run-in sheds, and wellmanaged cool-season pastures. The property’s restored two-story barn includes spacious stalls for the horses in addition to a heated tack room and indoor wash stalls.

As a lifelong horsewoman who continues to compete in some of the country’s biggest hunterjumper shows, Chrisie Van Cleef’s emphasis has always been on maintaining top quality care for her equine partners and creating a friendly yet professional atmosphere for training. Van Cleef’s passion for both horses and the property extends into her small business, HorseScents, which offers all-natural stress relief for horses in the form of lavender filled halter attachments that have been clinically proven to increase relaxation.

The organic lavender is grown and harvested at Stoneleigh Farm before being dried and sewn into the product. Stoneleigh Stables provides a good example of exceptional equine environmental

management. Marshy wetlands bordering some of the pastures are protected by buffers. These provide an environment for native species and a home for seasonal waterfowl. Pastures are well-managed through rotational grazing as well as regular dragging and mowing — both done by Chris Van Cleef. Manure and bedding are removed daily from horse stalls and stored in a large dumpster which is re-

moved regularly to a compost site. The number of paddocks allows the farm to rotate animals and maintain quality pastures. French drains surrounding the arena allow the capture and proper distribution of all water. Excellent vegetation, pasture, barnyard, and manure management ensures the farm has a low impact on the land despite being in an environmentally sensitive area.

A large dog-like nose, beady eyes and flat paddle-shaped tail are distinguishing characteristics of the beaver. Social animals, all members of the family will care for the young kits born in lodge or bank den during the winter.

The beaver, like many endangered species, was known more as a marketing icon rather than a commonly observed live animal. Whether it be an eagle, an owl or a beaver, all presented unique features, behaviors or sounds that immortalized them in the eyes of the general public. Each animal had qualities easily transferable as desirable human characteristics, making them kindred spirits and role models. Artistic impression blended fact and myth, using wild animals to capture their intended audience.

They appeared in cartoons, sales ads, and as insignias and mascots. The bald eagle is the symbol of our country and mascot of the 101st Airborne Division. The wise old owl’s hoot call in the night, sent chills down the spine of fright night movie goers. Beaver, whose ability to fell trees and build dams is legendary, is associated with industriousness, hard work and effort, all desirable human behaviors. The cartoons featured its flat tail and timber felling ability as main elements in a story.

Bucky Beaver was a cartoon

character created to promote Ipana toothpaste, given the beaver’s prominent front incisors. In the commercials, Bucky had shiny white teeth, though in reality, beaver teeth are bright orange; it mattered not, as few consumers ever saw a beaver to notice the difference.

Pursuit of beaver pelts promoted early exploration and settlement of North America as their European cousins had been obliterated as the demand for beaver top hats and coats was insatiable. In the new world, beavers were found to exist in profusion and the quest for profit eventually depleted the beaver population in the east to isolated populations. By 1895, NJ and other northeast states were thought to be devoid of beaver.

Beaver captured in Canada were transplanted to the Adirondacks and quickly spread to populate distant regions by the innate behavior of young beaver leaving the core family to seek new territory. This transience is observed each winter on the South Branch of the Raritan where itinerant beaver travel waterways and streams to establish dens throughout the entire river system down to Raritan Bay.

My first encounter with a live beaver was on Lawrence brook, an outlet of Farrington Lake. I was about 13 and fishing a narrow

…Along The South Branch

part of the stream for calico bass. A heavy canopy of trees hung low over the smooth, slowly flowing water to create an eerie mood. I was completely focused on casting my lure without getting caught in the branches. The day was almost over, and I kept telling myself, ‘just one more cast.’ It was then I noticed a large wake heading upstream toward me. I could not imagine what it might be. Its head appeared square and held slightly above the water. It was closing in and clearly it knew I was there and yet its course remained unchanged. Starving alligator crossed my mind as my hair stood on end.

What else could it be? An instant later I found out… and the surprise was perhaps more astounding than an alligator. A loud slap of the animal’s tail numbed every cell in my body. This is how a prey animal must feel when a raptor’s talons sink into its flesh. The quiet evening was shattered, and water exploded frothy droplets high into the air. It could be only one animal on earth and that could not be: but it was! It was a beaver!

Over the years, since that day on Lawrence Brook, beaver populations have dramatically increased throughout their original range. Beaver are now ubiquitous in NJ,

one even built a huge lodge in a small stream running through a local condo association before entering the North Branch of the Raritan. Our smallest waterways are often explored by itinerant beaver.

On a warm September day, I took my grandson, Caleb, on his first canoe trip, a mile up a local stream and back to Grammy and Dad standing on shore. The water was crystal clear and had a steady flow as I paddled upstream. Caleb was full of questions, and I had all the answers. Upstream about seventy-five yards, at the base of a shale cliff, deep in the shade, I saw some low-slung animal move. A fox seemed to fit the impression, though the spot was on a ledge at the base of the cliff. It was high noon bright and sunny. What could it be? I cautioned Caleb to look in that direction and be quiet. As we closed in, there was a huge

beaver. I was thrilled that we got within a few yards as it dove into the clear water and disappeared into a bank den. I could not contain my excitement seeing a beaver at midday with my grandson on his initial canoe trip. As we approached the takeout, I could not contain myself relating to what Caleb and I experienced. The next day I called my daughter to hear what Caleb said about our maiden voyage, hoping he would share my enthusiasm about the rare mid-day, close encounter with the giant beaver. What most excited Caleb was that Grampy lifted the canoe over his head and carried it to the river! Alas!

Beaver are fascinating animals in terms of behavior, interpersonal relationships, and anatomy and make a great introduction into nature for children of any

age as well as adults. Beaver live quietly among us, and on occasion, make an appearance to bring myth and legend to life. The beavers’ comeback is a lesson in how our land and water are used and the long-term impact of today’s land planning decisions. All that aside, beaver are an unexpected wild treasure placed in our midst to pique our curiosity and guide us deeper in the mysteries of nature.

Two excellent books to gain insight into the life of this unique animal are: “Lily Pond, Four Years With a Family of Beavers,” by naturalist Hope Ryden, and “The World of the Beaver,” by Leonard Lee Rue, a New Jersey pioneer of wildlife photography, written, circa 1958 and filled with Len’s images of NJ beaver.

Scouts Meet Sheriff K9 Unit

–The Somerset County Sheriff K9 Unit visited Cub Scout Pack 94 for the monthly pack meeting on Friday, Nov. 18. The officers did a demonstration with the dogs to show the scouts what they could do. After the demonstration, the officers met with smaller groups to answer any questions the scouts had about being police officers or about the dogs. –Submitted by Robyn Goldstein

One year ago, Jan. 2022 – Top township officials for 2022 were sworn in on Jan. 3. James Schworn became Mayor, David Owens became Deputy Mayor. Anna Columbus and Brendon Beatrice were sworn into office as Township Committee members for three-year terms.

Five years ago, Jan. 2018 – Bitterly

cold temperatures gripped Branchburg for 14 consecutive days as thermometers failed to rise above freezing from Dec. 26 to Jan. 8.

Ten years ago, Jan. 2013 – FDNY firefighters came to town to drill with members of the North Branch, Country Hills and Green Knoll volunteer fire companies. Six hours of training at the North Branch firehouse included forcible entry techniques.

25 years ago, Jan. 1998 – The Township Committee was trying to figure out how to speed up completion of a South Branch-Holland Brook sewer interceptor system that would collect wastewater from several lines, including Old York Elementary School and 101 new houses at Old York Estates. The hold-up involved application for

federal or state aid, which caused revisions in the plan.

50 years ago, Jan. 1973 – Passenger rail service throughout the Northeast, including Branchburg, was under threat by the possible bankruptcy of the Penn Central Railroad, which was focused on slow hauling of freight such as coal, and finding little profit in serving passengers who wanted speed. The controversy would eventually lead to the federal government’s establishment of the Consolidated Rail Corporation (Conrail) to move freight. Penn Central would continue to move passengers, as Conrail bought other smaller railroads, such as Erie-Lackawanna. Pajamas and Bedtime Stories

Students at Whiton Elementary and Stony Brook Schools collected pajamas for children in need in Somerset County last month.

At Whiton, the project coordinated with the second grade Active Citizenship unit in Social Studies. Students collected new pajamas, along with new or very gently used books for children ages 5 to 18 in the care of Somerset County’s Office of Child Protection. On Dec. 12, second graders gathered in the cafeteria to sort and organize 84 sets of pajamas and nearly 300 books.

At Stony Brook, 4th grade teacher

Nina Manger and 5th grade teacher Stephanie Formus coordinated the “Great Bedtime Pajama Drive” sponsored by Scholastic News. Scholastic donated a new book to go with each pair of pajamas. Students and their families and Stony Brook staff members competed to see if the fourth graders or fifth graders would bring in more PJs. The fifth graders won the friendly competition. The program promotes a comforting bedtime routine and healthy sleep for children to help them thrive. (pajamaprogram. org) Stony Brook has been participating in the drive for the past eight years.

The Meghan Rose Bradley Foundation will host its 16th Ladies Night Out “Princesses in Pajamas” on Thursday, March 2, at the Somerville Elks Lodge, 375 Union Ave., Bridgewater.

The event raises money for pediatric brain cancer research. Food and wine will be featured along with a silent auction with baskets donated by local businesses and friends of the foundation.

New this year are fun prizes for attendees whose attire showcases the theme Princesses in Pajamas. The evening honors the life and memory of Meghan Rose

Bradley who was diagnosed with brain cancer on Oct. 1, 2004, and passed away just 38 days later Nov. 7, 2004.

Tickets ($60) are on sale now and include wine, dinner, and dessert. The price increases to $65 after Feb. 20. Proceeds from the event will fund pediatric brain cancer research and provide scholarships to local area students.

The foundation welcomes donations of complete or partial baskets. Contact Ileen Bradley if you have items to contribute (mrbfoundation@gmail.com).

Branchburg Senior Program Wraps Up Year

Snow, sleet and rain did not deter 64 hearty souls from attending the Senior Holiday Luncheon on Dec. 15.

What a great month December turned out to be! We started the month out with a wine tasting on the first. Rolling Hills of Flemington staff brought a marvelous selection of wine paired with cheese, salami, fruit or chocolate. Lunch, coffee and Bingo followed.

Prior to the wine tasting, Township Administrator Greg Bonin spoke with the seniors and answered their questions about de-

velopment going on in town, senior housing, open space preservation and the topic of non-resident senior members grandfathered in the Senior Program. It was a lively discussion, and all questions were answered. Greg noted that he is always available by phone or email and always happy to come in and speak with the group.

The Holiday Luncheon on Dec. 15 brought out the Christmas sweaters and holiday attire with our members. This catered affair was a lovely
