Branchburg Township to Purchase Silver Saddle Swim Club Mayor Tom Young’s message about the Silver Saddle Swim Club was clear at the Township Committee meeting on Nov. 23: “The township is in the process of acquiring the Silver Saddle Swim Club which did not open in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.” The mayor said the Limone family, which owned the facility for about 60 years, was pursued by a number of developers to put either high-density housing or singlefamily homes on the property. “The family came to members of the (Township Committee) and we met with them and worked out a deal. The family is not reopening it. They’re either going to sell it to a developer or sell it to us. We’re going to try to keep it what it is today, and probably enhance it.” At this point, the 8.6 acre property includes a 110- by 34-foot pool, a 35-foot circular kiddie pool, volleyball and basketball courts, a picnic area and a snack bar. At the meeting, the township unanimously passed ordinances 1398 and 1399, which arranged $210,000 to fund the purchase from CRL Investment Group LLC for a portion of the property commonly known as Silver Saddle Swim Club. Young further explained there are two ordinances because part of the property is considered open space and part of it is covered by general funds. Young said, “We toured the facility and we assessed how it could continue as an asset to the town. We envision swim lessons, and camps for expansion of our recreation programs with our new Recreation Director John Voli, who was formerly recreation director in Secaucus and managed an outdoor pool complex with four pools in it and also a recreation center with an indoor pool.” “We are going to look for community input regarding enhancements to the property,” he added.

In an email to The Branchburg News on Dec. 4, Township Administrator Greg Bonin provided financial details: “$210,000 is coming from the general fund and is being used to purchase the house/ land adjacent to the pool (it is all one property.) We currently plan to sell that house/land to recoup some of the funds; there is no value to us in keeping that house or its two acres. The remaining cost will be paid from the open space fund as this will be a recreational and pre-

served site for the township. “Total purchase price is $950,000 plus incidentals (environmental studies, survey, etc.) hence the total cost of $959,000. Roughly $759,000 will come out of the open space fund for the purchase and is allocated to land apart from the house and its roughly two acres. “This is a quality of life and preservation purchase for the Township. It’s not often a property like this comes available. A property

In the 1940s Silver Saddle was also a ranch that held rodeos, wild west shows, hay rides and water shows at the pool. Buster Crabbe, an olympic gold medalist in the 1932 Olympics, and later a movie star in many westerns, was a partner in the operation of the Silver Saddle Ranch. that has so much history for the township but also has a huge potential for increasing recreational opportunities for residents.” Mayor Young sent the following email to The Branchburg News on Dec. 8: ”Our decision to purchase Silver Saddle was not a decision that we made casually. One of our primary goals in the management of Branchburg is to preserve and enhance the quality of life for local residents. In the case of Silver Saddle, we were looking at the elimination of a community facility that

has been part of our town for decades. The last thing we wanted to see was 6-7 new houses and a permanent loss of a community space. We worked out a deal to acquire Silver Saddle and will endeavor to do two things (1) preserve Silver Saddle as a community pool and (2) enhance the property to make it better, more accessible, and a bigger part of our community. This action is not without risk, but we will do the best job that we can and strive to “polish this jewel” in our town. Stay tuned...”

Reenactors Commemorate Washington’s Crossing on Video

line the shores of the Delaware River to watch the reenactment which celebrates the most critical military maneuver of the American Revolution—one which secured the spirit and faith that the war could be sustained and won by the fledgling American nation. Like many other annual traditions, the event was cancelled due to Covid crowd size restrictions. This reenactment began in 1953 and has been held every year since. Ron’s first year, 1976, was the Bicentennial of the event. In 2026 the event will be celebrating its Semiquincentennial (250 years). In 2020, however, a select few reenactors crossed the river one Sunday in early December in order to create a video of that fateful and iconic event. The video was made for those who usually come out and view the event each year in person to watch virtually on Christmas Day. The video is available on the park’s Facebook

For the first time since 1976 Branchburg resident and reenactor Ron Rinaldi did not plan to reenact Washington’s Crossing of the Delaware on Christmas Day. Every Christmas morning since 1976, Ron and (in the past 15 years) his sons Ronnie and James, have

dressed as General Washington’s soldiers and joined about 100 reenactors at Washington Crossing Historic Park in Pennsylvania for the annual Washington Crossing the Delaware reenactment. Each year thousands of visitors brave the weather Christmas Day and

Both Ron and his son James took part in the making of this video, portraying Continental Line soldiers. James was also pressed into service as an oarsman. The weather was cold and windy and all the soldiers were required to wear masks, but were glad to have the extra warmth around their necks and faces. Ron has not missed a single Christmas Day Crossing in 45 years and this was James’ 10th year. Although there was no reenactment Christmas Day, Ron and his sons still planned to drive down to the banks of the Delaware Christmas morning, dressed in uniform, to spend time to commemorate the event. After all those years it would not be Christmas Day for Ron’s family without walking those hallowed grounds and remembering the spirit and sacrifice that created our country. - Submitted by Ronald P. Chris Rasch, Branchburg resident and member of Boy Scout Troop 90, completed his Eagle Scout project this past December. Chris mapped out and placed distance markers along the Canal Path from the John Basilone statue in Raritan to its end at the Sellars Maintenance lot in Bridgewater. Chris came up with his Eagle Scout project idea while hiking with his family during the COVID pandemic. As they walked the trail he realized how helpful it would be for others to know where the path went and the exact distance of their walk. With help from volunteers, Chris carefully measured the path, constructed the posts and installed 12 posts marking every quarter mile. It is his hope that having a wellmarked path will encourage even more people to go outside and enjoy the nature that is so close to home.

Aidan Haddad

Aidan Haddad from Troop 90 built a picnic area for St. Martin’s Church in Bridgewater adjacent to a play area for his Eagle Scout project. The work included cleaning out the old patio area and installing 512 sq. ft. of concrete pavers plus 4x4 wood retainers. The project also included planting 10 shrubs around the area and staining the three existing picnic tables. BWC Made a Difference in 2020

The Branchburg News • January 2021

By Tricia Ihde for the BWC

Bridging to Brownies–Girl Scout Troop 61141 bridged from

Daisies to Brownies in December using the Elm Street Bridge in Neshanic Station to enrich the ceremony. The bridging ceremony had been canceled in the spring due to the pandemic. The girls recited the Girl Scout Promise and Pledge, crossed the bridge together as a troop of Daisies for one last time, and then individually crossed back and received their new Brownie vests and insignia. Troop leaders are Heather Pozsonyi and Susan Dougherty and troop members are Emily Binkerd, Darcy Johnson, Graysen Fleming, Natalia Montanelli, Sierra Pentz, Linnea Peterson, Leah Pozsonyi, Lyla Tillisch, and Genevieve Tkacs. —Submitted by Susan Dougherty

The Branchburg Woman’s Club began 2020 as usual, but like most organizations, the pandemic curtailed many activities beginning in March. In spite of this, the BWC persevered and successfully did several projects, such as “Operation Christmas Stocking 2020,” which provided filled Christmas stockings for our female military personnel serving in the Middle East. In addition, as part of the “Operation Chillout” Winter Campaign, the BWC donated hooded sweatshirts, facemasks, and funds to help with the outreach program that aids homeless veterans. With so many struggling with food insecurity, the club collected food for the Food Bank Network of Somerset County at the September Branchburg Country Fair. The club also contributed to the Raritan Valley Community College’s Student Resource Center and Food Pantry, which aids struggling students and their families.

Fortunately, the club’s book group easily adapted and continued their get-togethers with outdoor meetings, Zoom, and smaller indoor meetings. The club’s board of directors likewise met while social distancing and following CDC guidelines. The year 2020 began well with the club’s January and February general membership meetings featuring guest speakers from two local institutions that the BWC has supported for many years. The President of the Meghan Rose Bradley Foundation, Ileen Bradley, was the guest speaker at the January BWC’s meeting. Her presentation increased public awareness of pediatric brain cancer. The February meeting’s speaker was Jessica Skultety from Safe+Sound Somerset, a private nonprofit agency which has been helping individuals and families who have been impacted by domestic abuse. Also in January of 2020, the BWC sponsored the fifth annual Branchburg NJSFWC Spelling Bees at Stony Brook School.

Another special event was the Feb. 24 Branchburg Township Committee Meeting when March 2020 was declared Youth Art Month. By requesting this proclamation, the BWC sought to promote and encourage creative activities in the schools and the community. Related activities later had to be postponed. In October, club members were docents at the Little Red Schoolhouse during Somerset County’s Journey through the Past Weekend. Unfortunately due to the pandemic, from March on, the year’s general membership meetings, the BWC’s May Annual Dinner, and most extracurricular club activities had to be cancelled. The November BWC Craft Sale, a fundraiser for the club’s charitable donations and student achievement awards, was cancelled too. On a more positive note, the BWC is happily looking forward to the return of club activities when things improve in this new year. Veterans Day Honor

Kyle Kappmeier of Branchburg honored war hero John Basilone of Raritan on Veterans Day Nov. 11. “My good friend from home (Parsippany) who is now retired from the USMC, Gunnery Sergeant Jacob Schuhlein, gifted me sand from the shores of Iwo Jima,” Kappmeier said. “It was an incredible gift but I

knew I ultimately wanted to spread it at the memorial for GySgt John Basilone in Raritan.” Kappmeier contacted the Recruiting Sub Station in Somerville and two marines joined him in spreading the sand at the Basilone memorial at West Somerset Street in Raritan on Veterans Day.

John Basilone was a U.S. Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant who received the Medal of Honor for heroism above and beyond the call of duty during the Battle for Henderson Field in the Guadalcanal Campaign, and the Navy Cross posthumously for extraordinary heroism during the Battle of Iwo Jima. He was the only enlisted Marine to receive both of these decorations in World War II.

of change simply go away. The constant effort to achieve existence results in an almost infinite variety of life, whether it be a blade of grass or an elephant. Each develops unique mechanisms to deal with seasonal changes in atmosphere and light. New life forms are constantly being discovered while other life forms go extinct. I find it amazing our existence depends on heavenly bodies, light years away, hurtling through space in well-choreographed orbits controlled by gravity. Even more amazing is how oblivious humanity is to its existential condition, hanging only by an invisible thread. Though cosmic events are out of our control, their link to our existence sparks imagination and wonder. The curiosity that arises when we look toward the heavens has a gravity of its own which draws us in to seek deeper knowledge. Imagination and creativity are set afire when faced with a gap in information.

“I love life” perfectly describes the transition of life from elemental components to an existence as a living organism. Practically and symbolically, life begins and renews with the birth of light at the moment of greatest darkness. pirouette is anything but a solo performance. Only in a state of cosmic equilibrium, held firmly in place by gravity, can the possibility of life occur. The relative stability of atmosphere and repetitious seasonal changes found on earth, provide the predictability and time life requires to evolve and adapt. While the January first rewind is a human convenience, all life forms, humans included, have evolved to key in on the periodicity of increasing and decreasing day length. Light, along with atmosphere, temperature, and gravity, dictate the detailed specifications that must be met to exist. Life on the other hand, has no bargaining power and must somehow develop a form that embraces all the requirements set forth by the cosmic design as found on earth. Successful adaptation is critically dependent on the stability of environmental conditions. Life forms whose ability to adapt lags behind the speed

We are compelled to temporarily bridge the unknown with subjective theory, a vestige of our innate survival skills. As humans we are surrounded by natural wonders whose intended or unintended purpose is to fire our imagination and fuel our creativity to enhance our survival. In that way nature is teaching us how to fish as well as providing our daily bread. Wise words spoke of rendering to Caesar and following that advice we celebrate January first as a nod to society. Let us also be inspired by the brightness of January traced back to the winter solstice and that moment of perfect equilibrium between light and darkness - a celebration of the moment life began to stir on a planet spinning in the blackness of an infinite universe bounded only by our imagination. Greater Somerset County YMCA’s Togetherhood Program held its 7th Annual Leaf Raking Event for Seniors on Saturday, Nov. 14. More than 55 YMCA volunteers signed up to assist five senior residents in the Branchburg and Somerville areas with yard raking and cleaning. “It was so wonderful to see so many volunteers come out to help their neighbors. Their commitment to community is inspiring, and is needed now more than ever for vulnerable individuals while we are

still in the middle of a pandemic,” said Kate Russo, Bridgewater & Somerville YMCA Branch Executive Director. This year, Starbucks of Somerville donated coffee and snacks to each cleanup location as a thank you to the YMCA and its volunteers, and some Starbucks staff members also joined in on the leaf raking to help the cause. Dorothy E. “Dotty” Budzek

Dorothy E. Budzek, 94, of the Brookfield section of White Township, Belvidere, NJ, formerly of Branchburg, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Nov. 21, 2020, at home. Born on June 17, 1926, in Perth Amboy, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Brija Kazimir. Dorothy and her late husband of 67 years, William P. Budzek, had lived in Branchburg before moving to Brookfield in 2002. Mrs. Budzek was a supervisory field representative for the US Bureau of the Census before retiring. Dorothy was a member and past president of the Branchburg Senior Citizens Club. She was a parishioner

of St. Patrick R.C. Church, Belvidere. Surviving are four children, Kenneth Budzek and his wife Slawa; Jeffery Budzek and his wife Juanita; Lynda Lettieri and her husband Bernie; and Lisa Burr and her husband Roger; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Eleanor Koch. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be announced at a later date. Online condolences may be sent to www.MacFaddenFuneralHome.com. In lieu of flowers, contributions are requested to be made in Dorothy’s name to St. Patrick R.C. Church, 327 Greenwich Street, Belvidere, NJ 07823.

A Woman of Good Humor Dotty Budzek was very dear to The Branchburg News. For 16 years she produced the paper’s monthly list of birthdays among members of the Branchburg Senior Citizens Club. It was a great way to be sure all the club members got their names in the paper at least once a year. But volunteering for a useful service wasn’t enough for Dotty. A woman of good humor, she often included, with her birthday list, a selection of jokes – perfect for a newspaper with a monthly humor column called “Branchburg Corn.” In tribute to Dotty, the publishers of The Branchburg News went back in the archives and

found a few of her humdingers: Never iron a four-leaf clover. You don’t want to press your luck. People who think they know everything are a great annoyance to those of us who do. If all the drivers drove around in pink automobiles, this country would be a pink carnation. The candle maker has the best job. He works only on wick ends. Seems strange that the man who has money to burn cannot take it with him... You can accomplish anything if you have patience. You can even carry water in a sieve if you wait until it freezes.
