Keep one list at home in an easy-to-find place and the other about your person. Don’t forget to buy candles, matches, a flashlight and some batteries just in case of a power cut.

Most Christmases are wonderful but sometimes life gets in the way. With a smidgeon of forethought though, you can make all the difference.

Finally, there are the avoidable disasters caused by poor planning. Make sure the car is serviced and full of petrol if you have to travel. If you’re going abroad check all passports are up to date and that the dog or cat will be cared for. For peace of mind use boarding kennels or a professional pet sitter.

First among potential disasters are digestive ones. A plate of salmonella is definitely not top of most people’s Christmas list! Invest in special thermometers for ovens and fridges and check they’re running at the right temperature. Less serious but still unpleasant are tummy upsets caused by overindulgence of rich food and alcohol. Keep a supply of antacids and rehydration salts in your first aid box. Also stock up on plasters and anti-burn spray because preparing sprouts and getting the turkey in and out of the oven can be surprisingly dangerous tasks, especially after a cocktail or two! Then there are the unavoidable hitches such as illness which, let’s face it, can strike any time, even at Christmas. High temperatures and sore throats are no fun at all. Make sure you have ibuprofen and paracetamol to hand, both the junior and adult versions. Make two lists of emergency numbers. Include NHS Direct, an emergency dentist, your gas and electricity suppliers, an emergency plumber, electrician, vet and a locksmith. A garage and taxi service are useful too.

www.towncriermagazine.com

Burglaries increase around Christmas because thieves know there are rich pickings to be had so check your security. Also check your household insurance is valid and that you have enough cover. Did you know that a third of parents forget to buy batteries for Christmas toys? Avoid disappointment on the day. Run through a check list before you leave the shop: do you need batteries, a battery charger, memory cards, a scart lead or an extra console controller? It’s easy to throw the instructions out with the packaging and wrapping paper so take care, and furthermore, if you think there is something wrong with the gift DO NOT take it to pieces. You will invalidate your warrantee! You can’t prevent all crises. Prepare by all means but try to keep a sense of perspective and humour and hopefully you’ll have a happy Christmas no matter what life throws at you! The year we all had flu we simply postponed Christmas and had the full works a few days later instead when we all felt much better.

By Sarah Davey

Equipment: Star shaped cutter, baking tray, (straw and ribbon for tree decs)

Ingredients: 100g/3½oz unsalted butter, softened at room temperature 100g/3½oz caster sugar 1 free-range egg, lightly beaten 1 tsp vanilla extract 275g/10oz plain flour · To decorate 400g/14oz icing sugar · 3-4 tbsp water 2-3 drops food colourings of choice. Edible glitter.

Method: Preheat the oven to 190C/375F/Gas 5. Line a baking tray with greaseproof paper.

To turn these into Christmas tree decorations, press a hole in the top of the biscuit using a straw.

Cream the butter and sugar together in a bowl until pale, light and fluffy.

Bake the biscuits for 8-10 minutes, or until pale golden-brown. Set aside to harden for 5 minutes, then cool on a wire rack.

Beat in the egg and vanilla extract, just a little at a time, until well combined. Stir in the flour until the mixture comes together as a dough. Roll the dough out onto a lightly floured work surface to a thickness of 1cm/½in. Using your star shaped biscuit cutter, cut star shapes out of the dough and carefully place onto the baking tray.

www.towncriermagazine.com

For the icing, sift the icing sugar into a large mixing bowl and stir in enough water to create a smooth mixture. If you wish to colour the icing then add the food colouring here. Spread the icing onto the biscuits using a knife and sprinkle over the glitter. Set aside until the icing hardens. If you’re using these as decorations, add some ribbon through the hole and hang on your tree.

WHICH WINE SHOULD YOU CHOOSE?

WINE WISDOM

FOOD I was always a bit hazy about which wine to serve with which food. School didn’t teach me that sort of thing. Then one day a chef friend explained that far from being an elitist concept it was simply about marrying flavours that blend well or complement each other, much like cooking. I

such as Pinot Grigio. If the fish is more robust and served with a rich sauce, it will require a more fullbodied flavoursome white like Chardonnay. Salty seafood marries surprisingly well with champagne. Chicken or Turkey - Choose a full-flavoured white, like

a Bordeaux or Cabernet Sauvignon will work well or even a Rioja. Spicy dishes – These require a spicy wine. Look for a Malbec, Syrah or Shiraz. If the spicy food is vegetarian, then a dry Riesling will pair well. Vegetarian food - There is a misconception to serve only with white wine, but medium reds, like Merlot work well with lots of vegetarian dishes, particularly tomatobased recipes. Cheese board - Some cheeses go better with red, some with white. Sauternes and Stilton are a perfect match, while Chardonnay works well with brie. A dry Rosé is a good all-rounder. Remember, the main rule is to pair the characteristics of the dish with the characteristics of the wine.

FOOD

Mini Panettone *Little festive treats

Ingredient

Method

250g good quality plain flour 1 tsp dried yeast Pinch of salt 100ml whole milk, warmed (not hot) 3 eggs (Two beaten together, 1 extra) 1 tsp vanilla extract 50g golden caster sugar, plus extra for dusting 100g softened butter Zest and juice of one orange 100g raisins 100g sultanas 100g mixed peel (for nonpeel-lovers you can substitute cranberries)

Soak the fruit overnight in the orange juice.

You can leave it in the fridge overnight if you prefer.

Mix the flour and salt, the yeast and the milk in a mixer with a dough hook. You can do it by hand, it just takes longer. Gradually mix in two beaten eggs and the vanilla. Knead until the dough is smooth and springy. Leave in a bowl, covered with a damp cloth and allow to rise until doubled in size.

Line a large, six-holed muffin tray with paper cases. Divide the dough into six portions and roll into balls. Place one ball into each muffin case, cover with a damp cloth and leave for 20 minutes.

Add the sugar, butter and the yolk from the remaining egg. Mix again, either with the machine, or by hand, until the dough is smooth again. Add the fruit and zest and knead quickly until it’s all incorporated into the dough. Leave in a bowl, covered with a damp cloth, in a cool place for at least two hours until doubled in size again.

Heat the oven to 180C / 160 fan or Gas mark 4. Brush the tops of the panettones with the remaining egg whites and dust with caster sugar. Bake for 15-20 minutes until the muffins have risen and are golden in colour. Leave to cool on a wire rack. Variation - Add some brandy to the overnight soak in orange juice for a little extra kick. LYDIARD TURKEYS

Tips for Cooking

1 Start with the best

Start with a whole turkey, this will always cook and taste better than a crown or joint. Bronze turkeys are normally grown slower so benefit from having more fat distributed in them, the very best ones like our Lydiard Turkeys are also dry plucked and game hung, this gives the meat fantastic flavor.

The perfect Christmas turkey

2 Warm up

Remove from the fridge and allow at least an hour to reach room temperature, pre-heat your oven to 180c

3 Cooking

For a really moist turkey cook breast side down, turning breast side up for the second half if you want crispy skin. The fat in the back of the turkey will naturally baste the breast meat. Use cooking times only as a guide. Always check the temperature of the meat in the thickest part of the breast with a meat thermometer. Quality turkeys cook fast because of the fat so check well before the predicted cooking time is up as it may well be up to temperature. 65c for good quality turkeys if checking with a digital thermometer 70c for good quality turkeys if checking with a dial type thermometer 75c for supermarket type turkeys.

4 Resting

Leave your turkey for at least 30 minuets before carving, it wont go cold but meat will relax and be more tender and juicy.

5 Carving

Carve each breast off as a whole piece and then slice. This is far easier and gives better slices then caring individual slices straight from the bird.

When I was younger it used to drive me mad when my dad said 'I don't want anything for Christmas...' How could he say that? Then a couple of years ago I realised I'd become him. I don't want or even need more of anything. Many of my friends feel the same way. We don't want to add to plastic or clothes waste. We don't want clutter. Yet the pleasure of giving and receiving at Christmas is something most of us enjoy, so why not give a gift experience instead.

An up-close and personal experience with their favourite animal or insect - My friend loves hedgehogs so I paid for her to spend a day at the local hedgehog hospital. She learned all about hedgehogs and helped to feed and weigh them. She still talks about it today. You can buy 'meet the animal' experiences from spiders to lemurs. There's bound to be something for the animallover in your life.

THE GIFT OF

Experience

A National Trust Membership Allows the recipient access to around 500 historic houses and gardens, industrial monuments, social history sites, and beaches. Tickets to see a favourite band or artist perform - Or perhaps a local artist they’ve never seen, or music event they've never attended. Live music is a great night out, and even better if you gift two tickets so they can take a friend.

18

www.towncriermagazine.com

Tickets to a movie marathon - Whether your intended recipient is into

sci-fi, horror, fantasy, musicals or old black and white movies, there will be an enterprising cinema or theatre running a specialist event. If they are not into a particular genre then a season pass to a cinema or theatre will allow them to watch whatever they want. Wine, whiskey or gin tasting session - What could be nicer than sharing an evening touring a winery or distillery learning about the flavours

and techniques involved in producing their favourite tipple. Cooking class - Classes can be for a particular type of cuisine, like Chinese or Thai, or for a particular technique like breadmaking. There are generally other like-minded souls there so your recipient will make new friends. Spa treatment day – Life is stressful so very few people would turn their nose up at being pampered for a few hours. An escape room experience - If your intended recipient is into puzzles try tickets to an escape room. It's a fun experience for everyone and a great gift for a family. A masterclass in something they love - photography, juggling, golf, painting, writing...there are classes for any subject or skill you can think of.

The happiness we experience from acquiring things fades very quickly. Experiences are a bigger part of ourselves than material goods. We are the sum total of our experiences and they stay with us for longer because of the way they are encoded in the brain. Each time we think about the experience we feel that same sense of happiness we felt initially. They are truly the gift that keeps on giving.

Christmas Cracker CONUNDRUM

there are alternatives to the supermarket classic, Try '12 days of Christmas crackers’ which include an eco-friendlier wooden toy. Recyclable Christmas crackers come with a snap, hat, a joke - but no gift. Re-usable crackers are also available and can be filled with a gift of choice. Some have refillable ’snaps’ which mean they can be used again and again. You can also make DIY Christmas crackers by saving cardboard toilet roll and rolling them in a pretty fabric or brown paper or newspaper. Fill them with a handwritten joke and gift and tie with string at each end. These look festive but are untied – rather than pulled apart. You can always shout BANG as you pass them out!

Cracker jokes for DIY crackers: The environment is a hot topic right now and let's face it Christmas crackers have never been ecofriendly. Refuse increases by 30% over the festive season. Can you even remember the plastic tat that fell out of last year's crackers?

THE INTROVERT'S GUIDE TO THE

Office Christmas Party By Tracey Anderson

Office Christmas parties are queer affairs where we drink and socialise with folk we might not choose to drink and socialise with on any other night of the year. At best they offer a bit of cringeworthy fun, at worst they strike fear into our hearts. Introverts in particular struggle with enforced bonhomie at large events. For those of us who aren’t social butterflies, what are our options? Do we have to endure the occasion, or might it be possible to enjoy it? Dutch courage may seem like the only way to get through the evening but tanking up on alcohol will almost certainly make things worse. Although it’s a party in name, remember this is a work-related event so limit your alcohol intake to ensure you remain in control of your faculties, especially if under the influence you feel you might be tempted to give vent to your feelings of frustration at being passed over for promotion! A good rule of thumb is no more than two alcoholic drinks at any work function...even a festive one. It is estimated that at least 25% of the population are introverts so at least a quarter of your co-workers probably feel like you do about the party. Look for people standing on the edge, fidgeting with their glass and looking awkward. These are your people so take a deep breath and strike up a conversation with them. Concentrate 30

www.towncriermagazine.com

on effective eye contact when you introduce yourself. Get into the habit of noticing the other person’s eye colour. Don't worry about remembering it or commenting on it, just notice it. This helps to create an instant non-verbal connection and build rapport. It makes you seem confident, trustworthy and likeable. Have a few safe conversation topics in your armoury: good ones are the weather, movies, restaurants, books (you can either find common ground or ask for and offer recommendations), and light news topics (steer clear of Brexit though, and anything to do with the election). Also avoid work talk, that’s not the point of the event. If you're stuck in a conversation with someone you find offensive, dull or with whom you have nothing in common it can be hard to keep a conversation going. A polite ‘So nice to chat with you, catch you later...’ should be an adequate sign-off as you make your leave. The point of a party is to mingle so this won’t seem unfriendly. Remember - even if you would rather undergo root canal surgery than attend the office party it’s worth showing your face. Go along, have a drink and a mince pie then make a polite-but-early exit if you really can’t cope. People won't generally mind or even remember that you left early but they might question why you didn't show up at all.

The

Magic of Christmas Past & Present By Jo Deacon

o into any large shopping centre in December, you will soon know if they have a Santa's grotto, reindeer, elves, and the round, jolly figure of the magical man himself, dressed in his traditional scarlet red suit edged with white fur and a beard so bushy it meets his snowy white hair until you can’t tell where one ends and the other begins.

By the nineteenth century the Dutch settlers had adopted him as their own, and so began the tradition of gift giving as Christmas began to slowly turn into the celebratory – if a little too commercialised festivities we have today.

And then you hear the laughter and excited chatter of the children milling about as they dash from one shop to another the constant, "I want” echoing from flushed faces and awed eyes. The popular image of Father Christmas is a jovial, plump, always beaming figure. With his hands clasped across his large belly as he asks tots if they’ve been 'naughty or nice' throughout the year. However, this is an American image of a story begun in Holland in the fourth century, when two figures somehow became intermingled into one to create the jolly gift giver we know so well today. The oldest of the two seems to be Saint Nicholas, a fourth century Bishop. He was the patron saint of pawnbrokers, sailors, and children. The second figure was known as the Christmas spirit. Mischievous, medieval and who was known for his liking for drunkenness, dancing, and general mayhem. 32

www.towncriermagazine.com

Gift giving was not known as such at the time of Saint Nicholas, but being a man of kind heart and generous spirit, he tried to help all those he could.nIt is now a legend lost in the mist of time in the small village where the Bishop (St Nocholas) lived and preached. Most men of the village were farmers who didn’t have much

money or other assets, but it was a friendly little place where everyone got along well with his neighbour, most people knowing the financial status of each other. One such farmer who had lately become a widower, was a man such as this. Left on his own with three half grown daughters to bring up, he had no chance of scraping a dowry together for one girl, let alone three, and in medieval times a girl had to go to her new husband with either money, property, jewellery, or a title, of which the girls had none and with no hope of getting out of their spinster state. The night before Christmas, the girls had been out gathering wood for the fire, the cold wet snow seeping through their thin slippers until their feet were red and numb with cold. Dragging their bundles of faggots home, their thin shawls offering little protection against the driving snow, they were soon all sat warming themselves around the small crackling fire sipping thin gruel. Once they were warm, they hastily climbed into their beds and huddled down to keep warm. They were soon fast asleep. However elsewhere, the Bishop was still awake and would patrol his “flock” each night to make sure all was well. One particular night, while out and about, upon reaching the farmers cottage, an idea came to him! Grabbing a wooden ladder and leaning it against the whitewashed wall,

he slowly made his way up onto the thatched roof and shuffled towards the wide stone chimney. The girls had all hung their wet woollen stockings from the mantle to dry, and the Bishop could see them all in a row. CARE & SUPPORT

BE A GOOD NEIGHBOUR THIS WINTER

A

S we get older, winter can become more of a struggle. Colder weather brings an increase in associated health problems for those in later life. Short, dark days make it harder to get out and about, which can leave older people feeling more isolated and alone and more reliant on family, friends or neighbours being able to pop by. So it’s really important we look after ourselves, and the people in our lives who might need a little extra support. There are plenty of simple, practical things you can do to help this winter. Encourage everyone to look after their health. As we get older, we need to take a bit more care of our health - even if we›re fit as a fiddle. One of the easiest ways to protect ourselves from nasty winter bugs is to get the free flu jab. If you›re a carer, you can get it for free too. Make time for relatives, friends and neighbours. Darker nights and miserable weather can make it harder for people to get out and about. Calling for a chat, popping in for a cuppa or even sending a card in the post can really help let someone know you›re thinking about them. Ask if people have everything they need. When bad weather makes it harder to get out, popping out to run a few errands or doing an online shop could be a big help to someone. Check their home is warm enough. Over half of older people worry about bills in winter, and around 1 million people aged over 60 live in fuel poverty, meaning they can›t afford to heat their homes properly. If the house feels very cold or someone›s worried about heating their home, Age UK Wiltshire can give you information about schemes offering help with heating.

The Somerford Arms Meet Scott & Rachel Ferguson

On the 6th of December, The Somerford Arms is opening its doors again, much to the delight of Little Somerford and the surrounding area. This much loved pub has been at the heart of the village for many decades, an important part of village life and a hub for everyone to congregate in. The Pub is being taken over by husband and wife team Scott and Rachel Ferguson. Their unique blend of skills are going to give this beautiful Wiltshire pub a very special ambience, and the villagers a pub they deserve. Scott has been part of the heart beat of Wiltshire’s pub life for the past decade. As head of food development at Wadworth in Devizes he knows the right recipe to create award winning pubs, and Rachel’s creative background in floristry and fashion will ensure that the pub will encapsulate her modern creative vision based in traditional values for the pubs interior. The two of them have been keen to establish an ethos that blends Scott’s meticulous attention to detail when it comes to food and wine, and Rachel’s warmth and personality as front of house, this will be no ordinary village pub.

“We really want to put the Somerford arms around the village to make everyday taste a little better,’ Says Scott “and that doesn’t just mean creating a brilliant country pub but really supporting local suppliers and growers, as well as being connected to the rhythm of everyday village life and what matters most to the local community.” Expect to see menus boasting the use of local and seasonal produce prepared with creative flair and a commitment to sourcing within a seventy mile radius of the pub. An allotment initiative is also in the pipe line where villagers can exchange their home grown produce for the Somerford Arms very own currency and see it featured in Scott’s menu. Regular calendar events such as a Friday fish and chip take away, and the crafty pint loyalty scheme will provide the villagers with even more excuses to pop in and enjoy the cosy atmosphere. Scott and Rachel will be officially opening the doors on the 6th of December, With events throughout December and over the festive period be sure to join them and make the Christmas run up even more special this year.

Let us put the Somerford Arms around you!

HOME

The honest truth is, for many years all we generally did was open up ornament boxes, tinsel bags and load up the Christmas tree, stand back, and wonder, is this it? We had no plan, no colour scheme, just boxes of stuff. And you know what? It was fine. We had fun. The kids put their homemade ornaments front and centre and we were happy. But if you are wanting a fancy tree or just want to add more sophistication and style to your Christmas tree, we are here to say, it can be easy and fun. And the best bit is, it doesn’t have to cost a lot. It just takes some planning and a little bit of imagination... Decorating isn’t a science. It’s an art. So, like any art, you make it up, channel your creativity. Remember to have fun and not to worry about any rules. Suggestions, examples and colour trends are just that - suggestions.....you can do whatever you like. Keep it traditional or go a little wild!

Tips for easy decorating to create a designer looking tree! Choose a colour scheme and a theme. Either pick a theme which will suit your living space or what will work with the style of your home. See examples below. Country or Rustic Christmas bring the outdoors in! Traditional Christmas - Green and red with a hint of gold!

THE Centre Piece OF YOUR HOME Modern or Glam - metallics pink, blue, silver, gold etc or a mix! White Christmas - Simple white decor throughout for that snowy effect indoors! Our advice is to look at what you have first and then go shopping! With a colour scheme in mind, only purchase a few bit to give your design it's 'themed' look. Colour scheme sorted, decorations at the ready, then always start with your lights, after that you are good to start getting creative. In order to create a stunning Christmas tree you need to think outside the box. Besides having a Christmas tree that looks amazing, very often these elements can be way less expensive than regular baubles. You may find you already have pine cones [or you can find these whilst foraging on winter walk] Ribbon can be purchased relatively cheap from a haberdashery, to create gorgeous 'home made' bows. These of course can be of any size and colour to match any theme. Simple but effective! Have fun, do as the Americans do, drape dried popcorn along the branches or leaves and twigs sprayed gold or silver or of

course sprigs of holly. Dried fruit is another cheap alternative and will add that 'home made' charm. Cranberries also look very festive. Baubles and tree ornaments Generally the rule here is to arrange the baubles/ornaments in an artful way. Don’t let baubles dangle from a long string, but make them look like they are 'growing' from the branch. Or bunch baubles together, by attaching 3 with craft wire and then secure your trio to the Christmas tree. When doing this, consider your chosen colour scheme. Final Touches - Lastly, we recommend using some tinsel/ ribbon/strings of beads or a garland to drape around the tree in sweeping motions. Your choice here will depend entirely on the theme you have picked. This will add fullness, drama and another layer of dimension. Finally you are only limited by your imagination, enjoy the process and remember you don't need fancy or expensive baubles to create a magical Christmas tree. Thinking outside the box will make it easier and inexpensive so you have a tree which you are proud of and that your family will love.

Happy Tree Decorating!

SLIMMING WORLD RECIPE

Christmas Cake

Serves: 12 Prep time: 20 minutes + soaking overnight Cook time: 2 hours Ready in: Over 60 Minutes INGREDIENTS 110g non-soak prunes, stoned and chopped 275g mixed dried fruit 50ml brandy or rum 175g plain flour 1 level tsp baking powder 50g glace cherries 50g mixed peel, chopped 1 level tsp ground cinnamon 1 level tsp mixed spice Pinch of salt 50g dark Muscovado sugar 2 eggs, beaten Grated zest and juice of 1 orange Grated zest and juice of 1 lemon Glazed Fruit and Nut Topping 1 level tbsp low-sugar apricot jam 2 tbsp brandy 28 glace cherries 8 pecan nuts, shelled 12 almonds, shelled

Christmas is a time for friends, family and over indulgence ... but in your local Slimming World groups consultants and members are enjoying lots of tasty treats and preparing for the festive season whilst still slimming down their waist lines! The weeks leading up to Christmas are extremely busy for most of us, extra occasions and commitments can play havoc with our regular routines making it harder than ever to manage our weight. Keeping active when the dark, cold nights close in can be a challenge too. Each week in our groups we share recipes, advice and ideas for coping with potential pitfalls, from Christmas parties to shopping trips, and, in doing so we keep each other motivated.

METHOD 1 Put the prunes and mixed fruit in a large bowl and pour over the brandy or rum. Mix together and leave to soak for a few hours, or overnight 2 Preheat the oven to 170°C/150°C Fan/Gas 3. Sift the flour and baking powder into a large mixing bowl and stir in the glacé cherries and mixed peel. Add the spices and salt and stir in well so that everything is lightly coated with flour. 3 Stir in the sugar and then beat in the egg with a wooden sppon. Add the soaked fruit, together with the soaking liquid, and the zest and juice of the orange and lemon. Mix well together. If the mixture is too stiff, you can thin it down with a little more lemon juice. 4 Spoon the cake mixture into a lined 18cm square tin and smooth the top of the cake. Bake in the preheated oven for about 2 hours, or until s skewer inserted in the centre of the cake comes out clean. If the cake is browning too much, cover it with some greaseproof paper while it cooks. 5 Let the cake cool in the tin, then remove and wrap in greaseproof paper and foil. Store in a cool, dry place until you are ready to decorate it with the glazed fruit and nut topping. FOR THE GLAZED FRUIT TOPPING 6 Put the apricot jam and brandy in a small saucepan and heat gently, stirring with a wooden spoon until well blended. 7 Brush a little of the apricot glaze lightly over the top of the cake. Arrange the cherries and nuts in an attractive pattern on top and then brush them with the remaining glaze. 8 When the topping is cold, tie a pretty festive ribbon around the sides of the cake and then store in a tin or airtight container in a cool place. The topping will stay fresh for several weeks. There’s no magic pill when it comes to weight loss and the best weight loss plan is the one you can stick to. Our members lose weight by making small changes to the way they shop, cook and eat and filling up on our fabulous Free Foods - foods that are low in calories but satisfying like, pasta, lean meat, fruit and veg - means that all import Christmas Dinner is absolutely not off limits! 50 years ago our founder Margaret MilesBramwell had an idea, one where people could eat REAL food and still lose weight and so Slimming World was born! The plan has evolved over the years but the fundamental principles remain the same, losing weight with nothing off limits!

Eat, Slim and Be Merry this Christmas!

PETS

NOT JUST FOR

Humans

We spend a lot of time and effort with the smaller details in our homes, to try and make the spaces work functionally, but look beautiful too. Not all of us wants to live in a home that is Instagram worthy, but it doesn’t take too much effort to put consideration into the day to day things that we need to make life better. Possibly one of the most overlooked items in our home is the addition of animal bedding and furniture. Whether you have a dog or a feline friend, you really don’t need to have a smelly old blanket in a hard plastic box any more, ruining the ambience of your room.

Make sure that you keep any bedding clean and fresh, just as you would for your own bed linen, to prevent any nasty odours finding their way into your room. There are some cleaning product sprays available that remove odours from fabric which may be useful for an inbetween freshen up. It has also become more common to have beds in more than one room. After all, our pets like to follow us about so rather than encourage them to sit around on our expensive upholstery why not ensure that they have a feline/doggy equivalent? If space is of a premium, you can purchase smaller beds that are like flat cushions which you can always slide underneath a sofa or fold up into a cupboard should you wish to pack it away when your pet doesn’t wish to use it.

Pet stores have so much choice nowadays where you can choose different sizes, fabric and materials to ensure that the pet bed you select will blend perfectly into your home décor.

Cats often like to climb up onto the arms and backs of sofas so if you are happy to let them claw their way across you to fulfil their feline dreams then why not find some fabric that you can fill with wadding and and

More recently we have seen full home designs that incorporate animal beds within the structure of the room. For example when creating a built-in area of shelving and cupboards in the living room you could easily incorporate a space underneath to include a purposebuilt animal bed. Under the stairs is also a great area for a dog crate and a country kitchen can look fabulous with an oversized wooden dog bed filled with a cushion and washable cover.

use as a ‘bed’ to protect your soft furnishings from falling fur and claw marks. If you have an oversized dog (Dane, or even larger Labradors etc) then, space permitting, you may wish to purchase an additional seat for your canine friend that can be used exclusively for their enjoyment. No matter what size your pet, there’s always a way to stylishly incorporate them into your home!

ScenicStyle RENAULT GRAND SCENIC ICONIC TCE 140 Multi-purpose vehicles, once about as electrifying to look at as a soggy satsuma, are easier on the eye these days. You could even say they're desirable, especially the current Renault Grand Scenic.

have to worry about where to put stuff as there are loads of oddment bins to keep coins, cans of drink – and toys. Picnic tables in the rear fold-out – and feel sturdy enough to put up with kids leaning on them and eating their lunch on. There are lots of trims to choose from, and I drove the Iconic, which comes with front and rear parking sensors; DAB radio; cruise control and hill start assist.

Inside the French-made machine, digital instruments replace the conventional speedo that the old model housed. There's also a prominent infotainment unit in the middle of the dashboard. If you can operate an iPad – it'll be like falling off a log for you to use this. It all looks agreeably upmarket.

On the road, the Grand Scenic is agile for a large motor, and visibility is excellent. The car stays relatively free from body roll and offers a firm ride, but not an uncomfortable one. The five-door Renault is planted at speed, and it feels secure. And so it should, having achieved the top five-star safety rating from crash test body, Euro NCAP.

In addition to the usual five chairs, two more can be raised from the cargo floor - making this a true seven-seater. Furthermore, one-touch folding seats collapse easily to give a flat floor. Oh, and this Renault is one of the only cars in its class if not the only one - where you can activate this feature from inside the load area.

The petrol version is the one to go for if you can. My test model had the 1330cc 140ps unit fitted. It gives just enough punch to make the car a good, efficient commuter. Top speed

The Grand Scenic also offers 596 litres of boot space when the five seats are up. And you still have 233-litres of cargo capacity when all seven seats are in use.

But it’s not all about appearances. Behind the latest Grand Scenic’s stylish body and sporty 20-inch alloy wheels, you have a car that offers a practical transport solution for a family of seven. You never 66

is only 119mph, but in a country besieged by safety cameras, is a fast car even relevant anymore? Not really – what's more significant is the 40.9mpg the Grand Scenic can achieve with this engine. On top of that, you've got lowish CO2 emissions of 139g/km, meaning road tax is relatively cheap. As well as being transport for parents who haven’t given up on what their car looks like yet, the Grand Scenic offers a good seating set-up.

HOLLY

& the

IVY By Rachael Leverton

T

he holly and the ivy, when they are both full grown, of all the trees that are in the wood the holly bears the crown. There’s no doubt that holly and ivy are synonymous with Christmas. This dates back to pre-Christian era when pagans used evergreen decorations in their mid-winter celebrations. It’s not hard to see why they were attracted to these beautiful plants which offer a promise of better times to come during the most barren time of the year. Early Christians adopted them too and imbued holly particularly with Christian symbolism. In the carol, ivy isn’t actually mentioned again until the last verse which is a repeat of the first. It has a cameo role because of earlier songs, such as ‘The Contest of The Ivy and The Holly,’ in which the attributes of holly (male) and ivy (female) are compared. Our ancestors lived close to the earth and the seasons and were open to symbolism. As modern gardeners we might be sceptical of the symbolism, but we can embrace the glory of these seasonal plants.

Ivy (Hedera) comes in many sizes, from the tiny-leaved ‘Spetchley’ to the hand-sized leaves of ‘Maple Leaf’. It also comes in a beautiful variety of colours from the rich green, crimped leaves of ‘Parsley crested’ which makes great ground cover, to the gorgeous red-stemmed yellow leaves of the climber ‘Sunrise’. For winter baskets I’d recommend the lime-green ‘Ursula’ and her grey-leaved friend ‘Frederick’. Ivy is a doddle to grow. There are only a few things to remember. Cut it back in spring to encourage new growth and take cuttings between October and March when the growth is woody. Yellow varieties need sunshine and don’t let any of it grow into your eaves. Other than that, it is your undemanding gardening friend.

Protect it from rabbits if they frequent your garden as they love to eat the bark. Trim it in August if you have to and remove plain green shoots on variegated varieties. Take cuttings in the late summer or autumn. It does resent root disturbance once it’s established so make sure you plant it in the right place first time. Hollies are male or female but not necessarily named to help you distinguish. ‘Silver Queen’ is actually male and ‘Martin’ is female! You’ll need both for berries so talk to an expert at the nursery or garden centre to be sure…or google the answer on your phone! If you only have room for one holly bush, grow a self-fertile variety such as ‘J C Van Tol’.

Merry Christmas and Happy Gardening!

Holly (Ilex) is pretty easygoing too. It will grow almost anywhere except really waterlogged soil. It’s tolerant of pollution, salt and wind and grows really slowly, so it’s great for small gardens in the city and by t he sea.

fascinating insight into a world that is often hidden. A community trying to hold onto their traditions when the modern world is changing. Brought up in a Jewish community, Alderman writes convincingly from prospective of her characters and peppers the novel with Jewish theology, thought, and culture (including some delicious sounding Jewish recipes in the appendix)

Despite instructions from her father, Daisy and her mother sneak off to attend one. This single event leads to her family being turned upside down and propels Daisy into a world that she would have imagined - yet one that seems perfectly normal and logical to us today. A world where women have the right to vote and live their lives as they wish.

Disobedience by Naomi Alderman Look beneath the surface of British life and you will find many different communities and cultures - some more hidden than others. Naoimi Alderman’s 2006 debut novel deals with one such hidden, but long-standing culture: Orthodox Judaism. Ronit is a young woman living in New York. She emigrated to America as a way of escaping the strict Orthodox Jewish community that she had belonged to in London. But one day she receives a phone call. Her father - an esteemed and respected Rabbi - has died. Torn by duty, the desire for a sense of closure, and uncertainty of what she will find, Roniot makes the journey back home. At the very least she can clear out her father’s house and maybe reconcile some part of her past. However, this journey sets her on a collision course between her new modern life and traditionally Jewry. Not least an encounter with her childhood girlfriend Esti, and a reminder that tradition is a powerful force and one resistant to change. Received with some controversy when published, this is a

Secret Suffragette by Barbara Mitchelhill In the years just before the First World War the suffragette movement in England was in full swing and it is this that provides the setting for this historical novel. Daisy is 12 years old and dreams of following in the footsteps of Florence Nightingale and becoming a nurse.

A world where the politicians will have no choice but to listen to the demands of education and rights for all. This is a great introduction to the suffragette moveent for young readers and it will no doubt come as a shock to many that women and girls were treated as second class citizens only 100 years ago.

However, it’s not that simple. Born and bred in Bow, London, her family is poor with her parents working hard to try to afford even the basics. So, the pressure is on for her to leave school and work in the local factory. After all, according to her father, why does a girl need to be educated? Then one day the Suffragettes arrive and start holding meetings to encourage people to support their cause. www.towncriermagazine.com

ast Christmas’ is the title of a book published recently. It features the writing of Meryl Streep, Bill Bailey, Olivia Colman, Caitlin Moran, Graham Norton, Emily Watson and others. It was put together by Emma Thompson and her husband Greg Wise. Not only does it feature writing by well known personalities it also includes many others, with contributions from refugees around the world and even Muslims living in Britain. The contributors of the book were all asked:When you think back to Christmases past, what (if anything) made it magical? Looking towards the future, what would your perfect Christmas be? What would you change? What should we all change? It is said to be ‘a beautiful, funny and soulful collection of personal essays about the meaning of Christmas, written by a unique plethora of voices from the boulevards of Hollywood to the soup kitchens of Covent Garden’. When asked about the book Greg Wise said that the most significant thing people mentioned about Christmas was knowing that they were loved, and that they were surrounded by their loved ones. The book celebrates the importance of kindness and generosity, acceptance and tolerance - and demonstrates that they are values not just for Christmas.

It reminds me of the real significance of that first Christmas. It was God’s way of showing us all that we were loved. God sent his Son into the world as one of us; as a baby, so that we might look God in the face, in Jesus, and know that we are loved by the one who created us. Christmas is about God’s pure, unconditional, uncontainable, awesome, selfdenying true love. I cannot think of a more amazing gift; knowing that you are loved and not just for Christmas but into eternity. In the Bible John wrote: ‘This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life’. (The Message: John 3:16) So whether your Christmas is full of sorrow and sadness or joy and jubilation remember that Jesus came to show us all that we are loved, and to enable us to create a world of God’s kindness, generosity, acceptance and tolerance all year round. Wishing you God's richest blessing this Christmas and for 2020 Rev Sam King (revsamking@talktalk.net) Design & Computer Graphics by Alexander S. Grenfell, Calne.
