ello October!

I love this time of year. The weather’s not yet too cold but with the lovely crisp mornings it’s a joy taking the dogs out early, with the mist over the hills, spiders webs glistening on the bushes, the trees changing their spectacular colours through hues of green, red and gold - just lovely. October is of course when the clocks go back - fall back, spring forward is how I remember it! Though the darker nights are probably a bit of a giveaway!! Normally we start thinking about Christmas being just

around the corner. Sadly it’s probably going to be a very different sort of Christmas this year with the restricted number of people able to visit each other’s home. But we Brits are made of sterner stuff and if it helps to control this virus then that’s what we have to do. With Covid 19 cases on the rise and the possibility of another lockdown looming, the darker nights drawing in, we are surely in for a tough time ahead again. It’s important we remember to support our local shops and businesses to enable them to keep them going. We are so grateful at The Town Crier for all your support and loyalty and we in turn will do everything we can to in our

power to supporting you too! On a lighter note, inside the magazine we have recipes and lots of interesting articles for you. Read what benefits of being over 65 are or if your pet has a funny 5 minutes, perhaps it’s Mercury In Retrograde!!! And it’s probably not a surprise to know that the nation's favourite meal is the Sunday roast -plus so much more. Put your feet up and have a good read. Till November.

Hand Assembly begins for Uplift 2.0 in Malmesbury The new progressive design tackling mental health, made from 100% recycled fishing nets

Award-winning British inventor, designer and TV personality, Tom Lawton starts production of Uplift 2.0 – a solar powered spiralling kinetic sculpture made from 100% recycled fishing nets. Tom Lawton, co-founder of Uplifting Products, will hand assemble 1,000 Uplift 2.0s this month from his workshop in Malmesbury. Uplift 2.0 is Lawton’s latest creation – a mesmerising, solar powered sculpture for home. Designed to sit on your window-sill and revolve, it’s hypnotic motion creates a sense of calm to help you relax and unwind. The progressive design uses waste fishing nets sourced from Cornish Hake Fisheries to form the structure’s spiral. Lawton comments, “I wanted to make Uplift 2.0 in a beautiful aquamarine colour translucent like ocean waves, so I turned to the coast in search of inspiration. There I found the same problem we are all staring at, but rather than feel despair I saw incredible potential in the marine plastic that littered the beach.” One plastic fishing net allows Lawton to make roughly 70 Uplift 2.0s. With sales reaching 600 to date and a total

of 1,000 going into production this month, it’s a significant amount of fishing net being recycled off the Cornish coast and prevented from going to landfill or left in the ocean. Lawton continues, “As an inventor, I strive to bring uplifting products and long-lasting solutions to the world’s problems and for me Uplift 2.0 is such an achievement and so relevant for today – it’s good for the mind and for the planet.” 1,000 Uplift 2.0s are going into production in September and for each Uplift 2.0 sold on beuplifted.co.uk, £10 will be donated to The Sea Sanctuary – a unique mental health and wellbeing charity rooted in the concept of ‘blue health’. So far Lawton has raised over £1,000 for the charity whose programmes rely on the environment for marine activities and evidencebased therapies to help children and adults who struggle with issues such as stress, anxiety, depression. Uplift 2.0 is designed and assembled by hand in Malmesbury, Wiltshire. RRP: £185.00 For more information visit the Uplifting Products website: www.beuplifted.co.uk

Trowbridge Apple Festival Goes Virtual This year’s Trowbridge Apple Festival will be a virtual event, so the public are being asked to take part by sharing videos and pictures of their apple trees and results of their cooking exploits using apples. Organisers, The BIG Community Grow, are planning a range of videos that showcase some of the well-loved activities from the Festival. Local food producers and environmental groups are being asked to share videos about their work to be released during the Virtual Apple Festival, during the week commencing 17th October 2020.

Members of the public are also invited to share pictures of their apple trees and apple baking. Mel Jacob, Chair of The BIG Community Grow said: “The Apple Festival has always been a much-loved event in the Trowbridge calendar, but after much consideration, it was felt the public’s safety regarding social distancing could not be guaranteed. “It’s such a shame that we cannot put this wonderful event on for our visitors and community this year. In previous years it attracted hundreds of people, but we felt the risk would be too high to the public.” Working with Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, the Apple Festival plans to plant some apple trees in Biss Nature Park near Castle Mead this Autumn. There will also be a competition where schools and members of the community can win an apple tree to plant in their garden or school grounds. Mel added “2020 has been such a challenging year, we want to try and give people something lovely to do like planting an apple tree.” Details of competitions and how to take part and share videos will be announced shortly on Facebook and Instagram – search for Trowbridge Apple Festival. In addition, a date will be announced soon for the 2021 festival.

CALNE’S BONFIRE & FIREWORKS NIGHTS AND CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS CANCELLED Calne Town Council have taken the difficult decision to cancel the upcoming Calne Bonfire & Fireworks Night, scheduled for Friday 6th November, and the Calne Christmas Festival of Lights, scheduled for Saturday 28th November. The cancellation of these events are due to the ongoing social distancing and safety restrictions placed on large events. A Calne Town Council spokesperson commented “Calne Town Council has not taken this decision lightly and we looked at a multitude of options and changes for each event. Our priority must and always will be the safety of everyone involved. We understand how important these events are on Calne’s yearly events calendar and how much work local schools and community groups put into creating their lanterns for the annual lantern parade. We would like to take a moment to thank everyone who continues to support Calne’s events, from the stallholders and stewards to the parade walkers and visitors.

6

www.towncriermagazine.com

The cancellation of the events will also impact our dedicated local event stallholders and shopkeepers who rely on the additional footfall the events bring to the Town Centre. Calne Town Council recently launched a ‘Shop Local’ campaign to highlight the importance of shopping locally and the benefits it has on the local economy. We will continue to support and promote our independent business owners during these difficult times. The Town Council are working alongside Calne Town Mayor, Cllr Robert Merrick, on plans for a Mayor’s Shopping Week, running between 7th and 12th December. The week will include a late-night shopping event and Santa’s Grotto events at Calne Town Hall. We will also ensure that residents will still get to enjoy the Christmas lights throughout the Town Centre later this year, and further information on these will be shared as soon as possible.” www.calne.gov.uk

Is Halloween Cancelled? By Sarah Davey

Trick-or-Treat is either a fun chance to dressup and claim free sweets from neighbours, or it's an antisocial American travesty which has infiltrated these shores. My kids start planning their outfits in March. I don't want to rain on their scary parades, but what should we do about Halloween in the face of a global pandemic? It's not certain that any of our neighbours will actually welcome my young visitors (or plague-bearers as I’ve come to think of them of them since their return to school), no matter how cute their costumes are. And frankly I'd freak out about them grabbing handfuls of potentially COVID-coated sweets, so I'm not exactly devastated that I won't have to accompany them door-to-door, but neither am I a total killjoy, so I've come up with some ideas for alternative activities: Hang a spooky piñata for your children in your own back garden. Create a haunted house for your kids at home. Let them dress up and be scared in a fun-but-safe way. Create a spooky scavenger hunt inside and out. Leave clues, or a trail of blood, or spiders. Snuggle up and watch a 'scary' movie... something like Monsters Inc or The Corpse Bride. Read ghost stories in the dark in front of the fire, or if the weather is favourable, go outside, snuggle under blankets, light pumpkins and toast marshmallows on a camping stove or fire pit. That’s the sort of trick-or-treat night I could get behind. I suppose we should also leave a bowl of Quality Street and bottle of hand sanitizer on the doorstep and wave at the hardcore trickor-treaters from the s a f e t y of the upstairs window. Whatever you decide, have a Happy COVID-safe Halloween! 8

The Classic

Sunday Roast

T

he classic Sunday roast – and all the trimmings – has been named the nation’s favourite meal.

A study of 2,000 UK adults revealed the top 50 best-loved dishes, which also included a full English, pizza and curry. In true British fashion, fish and chips featured in the top 10, as well as scones with cream and jam, sausage and mash and shepherd’s pie. The study also found that more than six in 10 adults will turn to their favourite foods for comfort, while 36 per cent treat themselves to their preferred dishes on the weekend as a reward. A spokesman for Crisp ‘n Dry, which commissioned the research to mark its 50th anniversary, said: “There is nothing like tucking into your favourite meal – especially when you’ve made it yourself.

The study also found chilli con carne, jacket potato with cheese and beans and toad in the hole to be among the best-loved meals, as well as British staples such as steak and chips, cottage pie and sausage rolls. But while a third enjoy these foods because they are filling, 27 per cent love them because they are nostalgic and remind them of their younger years. Nearly a fifth turn to their favourite meals after a bad day, but 59 per cent will just eat them as and when they please. Half of those polled will feel happy when they eat any one of their preferred foods, while a quarter will even feel relaxed. The research, conducted via OnePoll, also found 65 per cent enjoy cooking and 62 per cent of Brits would even describe themselves as a ‘good cook’.

“Whether it’s something simple like sausage and mash, or a full-blown Sunday roast, nothing compares to that sense of achievement and enjoyment when you can sit down to eat a tasty dish. “Our study has also shown that Brits won’t stray far from their roots with a number of British staples making the list. “Although it’s also great to see some more exotic meals within the top 20 such as curry and stir fry.”

14

www.towncriermagazine.com

The nation’s favourite meal...

A further 63 per cent like to experiment when slaving over a hot stove, and more than half will typically cook their favourite dishes themselves rather than relying on someone else to make it for them. But 39 per cent admitted their preferred dishes taste better when made by someone else. Some have no choice though as one in 20 don’t have no idea how to cook their favourite meal. A spokesman for Crisp ‘n Dry added: “Learning to cook is a process that takes time, and when you learn something new, you’re not always likely to get it right first time. We’ve been supporting families for 50 years now with a product that helps them – whether it’s browning and basting or roasting and frying. As they say, practice makes perfect, and sometimes you find that you like things a certain way the more and more you cook them. But there are other times when the reason you love a certain dish is because of the one someone else makes it.”

Top 10 best dishes according to Brits: 1. Sunday roast with all the trimmings 2. Fish and chips 3. Full English breakfast 4. Curry 5. Roast potatoes 6. Roast chicken meat 7. Chips 8. Pizza 9. Christmas dinner (with turkey) 10. Bacon sandwich

Changing times

www.dancingflavours.co.uk/learn-lebanese-cookery/

Our world is changing beyond recognition and we have to adapt. We step back when we come across another human instead of getting closer to chat and maybe hug. We have to stop and think if we need to get out of our homes. We have to wear a mask covering our face so it is hard to see who we are talking with missing facial expressions and smiles. I was in the shop yesterday when a woman in a mask called my name. I didn’t not know who is talking to me and asking how I am. So strange and frustrating. It is tough. Life goes on, so we have to find another way to work and to connect. Suddenly Zoom became a platform that allows us to see, talk and meet our family, friends and colleagues. Not sure about you, but I never heard of

16

www.towncriermagazine.com

Zoom before Lockdown. For a person like me who is very tactile and thrives on meeting people, meeting online is not what make my heart sing but it is second best. And I am so thankful for that. Winter is coming, the days will be shorter and darker which will almost certainly add to our sense of isolation. My invitation to you is to make an effort to keep in touch with others in person if possible or online. We need to look after our physical, mental and emotional well-being and that is only possible when we can connect with other people. I had so many messages after my virtual classes/meals thanking me for the space to share food, ideas and chats, to connect and to laugh. It kept us sane during Lockdown. Give yourself and loved ones the gift of time spent together sharing cooking and eating as nothing bring people closer better than food.

Ingredients: 3 courgettes, sliced into 1cm circles. 1 large garlic clove, peeled and crushed. Juice of 1 lemon. 3 tbsp olive oil. Fresh mint for garnish. Salt to liking.

The perfect Christmas turkey

Method: It is almost impossible to find a simpler and tastier way to use courgettes. On a baking tray, scatter the sliced courgettes. Drizzle with the oil, turn around and drizzle again. Bake in the oven at 200 for about 30 minutes or until cooked. In a little jug or cup, mix crushed garlic with the juice of 1 lemon. Add salt and mix well. Place the baked courgettes in a dish. Pour the dressing over the courgettes and coat them well. Serve cold with a chunk of a nice bread as a snack, light lunch or side dish. Sahten (wishing you health twice) .

CinderToffee Put the bicarbonate of soda within easy reach of the hob.

Part science experiment and part sweet treat. This is fun for the kids and perfect for Halloween and bonfire night. Prep time: 5 minutes Cooking time: 15-20 minutes (plus cooling) Serves: Depends how sweet your tooth is!

Ingredients

165g demerara sugar 165g caster sugar 60ml golden syrup 4 tbsp water 15g butter, diced, plus extra to grease Pinch of salt 1 tbsp bicarbonate of soda You will also need a kitchen thermometer

Place both sugars, syrup, water, and butter in a deep, heavy-bottomed pan with a pinch of salt. (Make sure it is a deep pan or the 'science bit' will go horribly badly!). Heat gently, stirring, until the sugars and butter have dissolved, then turn up the heat slightly and bring to the boil. Simmer until it reaches 138C turns amber and bubbles - this will take about 10-15 minutes. When the mixture gets to temperature, remove it from the heat and quickly and thoroughly whisk in the bicarb. It will foam and grow alarmingly. The kids will love it! Pour the foamy mixture into the tin and leave to set. When cold get the kids to smash it into pieces.

Optional: Pour melted chocolate over the shards for the ultimate cinder toffee treat.

Method Generously grease an approximately 24cm square tin.

ON the MOVE!

Property owners are putting their homes on the market because they are bored of the area, don’t like the neighbours – or fear their house is HAUNTED.

A poll of 2,000 adults looking to sell up in the next six months also found one in 20 are so annoyed by glare on their TV screen, they’re going to buy a whole new house. Another one in 10 are worried they’re currently living in a ‘ropey’ neighbourhood while another tenth of those polled think crime rates around them are going up. But more than one in twenty want to move because they are too far away from their nearest pub while the same number plan on moving because their cat or dog ‘doesn’t seem to like’ where they currently live. Sam Mitchell, CEO of online estate agent Strike, which commissioned the research, said: “People move for all sorts of reasons. Some are more pressing than others – not getting on with your neighbours can be a real emotional drain, particularly if you’re spending much more time at home currently." But some of the other reasons that turned up in our survey were definitely a bit more frivolous.

“Our results found there’s a level of uncertainty around moving to a new house at the moment – people aren’t sure if prices are going to go down or up for example. “However, with so many reasons pushing us to move home, and exaggerated by the extra time we’ve spent at home recently, clearly this uncertainty isn’t enough to deter people from selling.” The study also found that since lockdown measures were introduced, half of prospective movers say their priorities for a home have changed. Four in 10 now want a bigger garden or outdoor space, while three in 10 want to be closer to their friends and family. With working from home now the new normal, a quarter say not having a home office has become a dealbreaker and three in 10 are now looking to move further away to get more for their money. And more than 36 per cent expect house prices in their area to go up as millions across the nation look to buy and demand dials up. Just a quarter think there is a chance their property value could go down, but 62 per cent do believe buying or selling could be more stressful now due to the pandemic. As the UK slowly eases out of lockdown, more than eight in 10 respondents think it’s important to sell their home in a socially distanced way. Because of this, 44 per cent now say they’re likely to use an online estate agent to sell their home, rather than a high-street presence. Half of respondents said that the bottom line is that Covid-19 won’t stop them doing what they want to, according to the OnePoll figures.

21

Strike’s CEO Sam Mitchell added: “Property demand in the UK is back and interest from buyers has returned to pre-coronavirus levels far quicker than expected. "We’re currently seeing at least a 25 per cent increase in demand from buyers now versus before lockdown began. Meanwhile, the backlog of sellers who need to move has never been greater. "Brexit uncertainty stunted plans for many long before Covid-19 and now patience is wearing thin. This has only been exaggerated by the fact we’ve all been locked inside our homes and our priorities for what we want in a home have changed. Our job is to guide sellers and ensure their move is as efficient as possible now that they can finally proceed. Virtual tools and tech services have become commonplace and it’s about time our industry embraced that to deliver a better and quicker service.”

Artisan gin maker record online sales An artisan gin maker has recorded an 800 per cent increase in online sales as Brits’ love for G&T continues in the Covid-19 era. Over the past decade the gin market in the UK has grown, but like the whole of the drinks industry, they faced a crisis in March as pubs, bars and restaurants were forced to close their doors. But Bramley and Gage's 6 O'clock Gin, based near Bristol in Thornbury, South Gloucestershire, has had a buoyant period and expects overall sales to increase on last year - thanks in part to the huge spike in their online business as loyal customers demand their G&T fix. Monthly sales on their website soared from just under £10,000 per month to £80,000 per month, while orders on other platforms such as Ocado, Amazon and Master of Malt have doubled. Bramley and Gage launched 6 O’clock Gin in 2010 on the back of a £25,000 loan from Funding Circle. Across the business, they are targeting turnover of £10 million per year by 2021 – a 9,900 per cent increase on 2007. They also plan to crack America, having recently opened a base in Tampa, Florida, and signing a deal with RNDC, the USA’s second biggest distributor, to help growth.

safer manner.” To diversify during the crisis, they also launched a ready to drink range, releasing a classic London Dry Gin and Tonic (7.0 per cent ABV), and a ‘Light and Low’ (<0.5 per cent ABV) version plus two new flavours in July - Exotic Orange and Damson & Ginger as well as a Light alternative to their classic London Dry gin and tonic.

Michael Kain, co-founder, said: “Covid has been a challenge but our sales have increased. We've been able to compensate for the loss in pubs, bars and restaurants, the cancelling of tours, our own shop closure and the cancelling of outdoor events by selling direct from our website and through other online stores.

This range of gin combinations is designed to provide a more practical solution to serving high quality G&T’s in pubs and restaurants.

“We’ve had an 800 per cent increase in purchases from our website and sales on sites such as Amazon and Ocado have doubled. We’re a small, flexible and innovative business and pubs and hotels are now reopening. In the mid-Covid era, people still want high-quality G&T and that takes staff time to pour. Safety is important and by putting a high-quality G&T in a ready to drink can, staff are saving time and serving in a

Bramley and Gage have been a remarkable success story since 2007, when Michael and his sister, Felicity Hall, took over their parents’ liqueur business following their retirement. They launched 6 O’clock Gin in 2010 against the backdrop of a financial crisis where banks were hesitant to lend. At the time, they were one of just 23 spirit distilleries in England when small batch, artisan gins were a rarity. However, they saw an opportunity for growth and, not wanting to give away equity in the business, approached Funding Circle for a £25,000 loan to pay for a new bespoke still. www.towncriermagazine.com

29

...continued After securing the capital, they transformed themselves into an award-winning gin maker, with its flagship 6 O’clock Gin London Dry stocked in the likes of Waitrose, Harvey Nichols and more than 6,000 pubs, restaurants, and hotels across the UK. Ten years on and there are now 441 gin distilleries across the UK – with the market worth a staggering £3 billion. Michael said: “The market has exploded. I could never have expected how much it would grow by. We’re 100 times bigger than we were in 2007 and Funding Circle played a massive part in it. In 2010, we needed to invest in stock to help us scale and grow and at the time the banks weren’t being helpful. We didn’t want to give away any equity, so a syndicated loan made sense to us. We borrowed £25,000 through Funding Circle and we were able to put in a second still (gin-making apparatus) which we have today. We got a good rate and paid it back within three years - we’ve since used them again.” The siblings named their brand 6 O’clock gin because that was the time they would always have a G&T. The family and their employees still maintain their tradition of indulging in the first G&T of the evening at 6 o’clock - a very British custom. Bramley and Gage, through their 6 O’clock brand, has played an important role in the success of the industry, going from a team of two to 25 and using more than 120,000kg of sloe berries each year. They have also picked up 150 awards around the world and their distillery in Thornbury is visited by around 5,000 gin fans annually. To keep their customers entertained during lockdown, they launched live 6pm shows online, which featured cocktail masterclasses and tips on serving the perfect G&T. As 6 O’clock Gin turns 10 years old in September, they are preparing to give away 3,652 free G&Ts to fans across the UK – one for every 6pm since they launched their business a decade ago. Lisa Jacobs, managing director at Funding Circle, said: “As one of our first customers, it's been fantastic to watch Bramley and Gage go from strength to strength over the years. 30

Obesity & COVID-19 COVID-19 and its effects have scared us all, health professionals and public alike. We’re still learning about the virus, but one fact has been all over the news in the past couple of months. Obese people (people with a BMI over 30) are more at risk of complications. Why is this? Most of my friends with BMIs close to or greater than 30 seem perfectly healthy individuals. Should they be worried? In order to answer this question, we need to look at the immune system:

When we catch a virus our body’s defence system is triggered, and inflammation occurs. This is due to our all-purpose innate immune response, which serves as the first wave against foreign invaders. Blood flow increases to the infected area causing redness and swelling. When your nose blocks and becomes red when you catch a cold, that’s inflammation. This reaction is caused by white blood cells called macrophages and the proteins they produce called cytokines. It’s the cytokines which trigger inflammation. Usually this inflammation is a simply a sign that our body is releasing the hormones and proteins which activate our white blood cells to kickstart the recovery process, and ultimately defeat the infection. No inflammation means no defence…and that’s bad.

When your body keeps adding adipose tissue (fat) cytokines are released by your fat cells, triggering inflammation. Researchers even characterised obesity as ‘…a state of low-grade, chronic inflammation.’ This means that an obese body has its immune system permanently switched on and is therefore in a constant state of inflammation. Over time this can lead to the development of both minor and major illness and conditions, such as heart disease and diabetes.

How does this relate to COVID-19? Back in 2009 the H1N1 Swine Flu was at its most virulent, doctors in Spain noticed that overweight and obese patients were being admitted to intensive care units in disproportionate numbers and took longer to recover than non-obese or overweight individuals. Their increased risk was attributed to the excess number of proinflammatory cytokines in their bodies. Researchers in Canada then analysed the flu records for the previous 12 years and found that people who were obese were statistically more likely to be admitted to hospital for respiratory diseases than those whose BMI was in the normal range. They concluded that obese people were an “at risk” population during flu seasons due to their compromised immune response. As we go into the winter and the risk of a second wave of coronavirus, if you have a BMI over 30 it makes sense to try to bring it down and minimise your risk. Talk to your GP. By Louise Addison

So far so good; so why is obesity a problem? Well it turns out that white blood cells aren’t the only type of cell that have the ability to produce those inflammationinducing cytokines. Fat cells (adipocytes) can also do this. Scientists have learned that fat is an active endocrine organ, one that can secrete a whole host of proteins and chemicals, including inflammatory cytokines. www.towncriermagazine.com

Get a Flu Vaccine Some people believe that it’s not worth having a flu vaccination. But it's actually one of the most important things you can do for your health and others, especially in the middle of the global coronavirus pandemic.

Health professionals always advise the 'at risk' groups to get vaccinated. People eligible for the free flu jab include: people aged 65 and over; pregnant women; primary school aged children, two and three-year-olds; and people with medical conditions like asthma,

diabetes, or heart failure. But most experts are recommending the flu vaccine for almost every demographic this year. Although the flu vaccination does not prevent Coronavirus, both of the viruses have an impact on the respiratory system. A combination of both viruses, or one after the other, may mean bad news for your health, respiratory health, and overall ability to recover. Health professionals suggest that this year we should have our shots as early as September. Even though typical flu season begins in October and peaks between December and February, the changes brought on by COVID-19 mean that it's important to get organised early because you will probably need a formal appointment, even at a pharmacy. Winter is a particularly busy time for GPs and hospitals. Vaccinating to protect against flu could help reduce the risk of the NHS becoming overwhelmed with cases of both flu and COVID-19.

Benefits of being over 65 The top benefits of being over 65 are being free to speak your mind, a seemingly endless supply of spare time – and finding pleasure in the little things....

A

poll of 2,000 UK adults aged 65 and over, found that half think having grandchildren is the best blessing to be found in later years – with more than a third proclaiming it to be even better than parenthood. Realising there is more to life than work, wearing clothes for comfort and not feeling pressure to do anything you don't want to, also featured in the top 30 list.

exists among the over 65s. Those polled say people shouldn’t qualify as being ‘old’ until the ripe age of 77, with nearly nine in 10 agreeing wholeheartedly with the saying, ‘you’re only as old as you feel’. Martin Jones, CEO of Home Instead Senior Care UK, said: “Many of us fear growing old, but this research shows that there’s little to worry about and a lot to look forward to. “Being in the latter stages of one’s life can bring with it a sense of liberation and independence that few other stages can.”

A further 35 per cent love not feeling tied down for any reason, and 31 per cent enjoy being able to spend their hard-earned cash on themselves. The research, commissioned by Home Instead Senior Care UK (HISC), also revealed that a prevalent ‘young-at-heart’ attitude 38

www.towncriermagazine.com

The study also found feeling less stressed, being able to try new things and actually enjoying exercise are also among some of the best things about growing older. Also making the list was knowing your likes and dislikes, being more sensible with money and being able to pass on your wisdom to younger generations. As well as highlighting the many gifts that old-age can bring, the poll found that growing beyond middle-age triggers an appreciation of what does and doesn’t make us happy.

Nearly two-thirds of over 65s wish they’d done some things differently in their youth. Looking back on their life, the most common regrets included not saving more money, wishing they had followed a different career path and wishing they had taken better care of their health. Respondents, surveyed via OnePoll, were also asked which celebrities in their age bracket most embrace the ‘essence of positive ageing’. The three most admired house-hold names were Queen Elizabeth II, Sir David Attenborough and Dame Judi Dench.

Top 30 best things about being older 1. Having more free time 2. Spending time with family/friends 3. Not feeling pressure to do anything you don't want to 4. Having grandchildren 5. Finding pleasure in simple things

National treasures Dame Maggie Smith, Joanna Lumley and Helen Mirren also featured in the list of top older-age icons.

6. Realising there is more to life than work

However, fashion icon Dame Vivienne Westwood and basketball legend Michael Jordan fared less well.

9. Wearing clothes for comfort not style

7. Enjoying going out for a casual walk 8. More time to travel 10. Not rushing through life/taking things slowly 11. No longer caring what others think 12. Having a clear idea of what's important in life 13. Feeling less stressed 14. Knowing who your true friends are 15. Not feeling 'tied down' 16. Getting reduced rates for things like rails fares or days out 17. Knowing your likes and dislikes 18. Being able to spend your money on yourself 19. Feeling free to speak your mind 20. Knowing how far your money can go 21. Being able to make more time for others 22. Being more sensible with money

Martin Jones added: “We agree with the country’s over 65s that age really is just a number, and – assuming the Coronavirus outbreak is fully under control – look forward to helping people safely enjoy later life in whatever way they please.”

23. Enjoying exercise 24. Being able to pass on wisdom to younger people 25. Being able to try new things 26. Not worrying about the future 27. Getting close to retirement/retiring 28. Reconnecting with people you haven't seen for a while 29. Achieving things you've always wanted to achieve 30. Settling into a routine www.towncriermagazine.com

Children think dad is a better driver than mum – but believe he goes too fast and suffers the most road rage. A study of 1,000 6-16 year-olds whose parents both drive found 43 per cent named dad as the ‘best’ behind the wheel, while only 29 per cent opted for mum. Reasons for choosing him as the best driver include the fact he drives for his job, has a van and is the designated holiday driver for the family. But almost two thirds claim their dad drives the fastest while 42 per cent think he experiences the most road rage. Despite this, 35 per cent of youngsters prefer being in the car with their mum, naming her as the parent most likely to join in with car games, such as I Spy, while on a journey. Tiffany Wilcox, from MG, which commissioned the research to celebrate the family friendly model range, said: “The results paint an interesting picture of family car journeys and how kids see their parents.

“Everyone remembers family road trips from when they were younger, the discussions which are had, games that are played and music choices. It’s amusing to have an insight into children’s views of their parents' driving habits and clearly the results show dad wins when it comes to driving but mum is more fun to be with in the car. Families don’t have to compromise on practicality and style with our family model range and the built-in technology will help keep the kids entertained on both long and short journeys.” 50

www.towncriermagazine.com

The research also found dads win at all driving techniques, including being best at both reverse and parallel parking, hill starts and three-point turns. Children also think their dad is more successful than mum at switching lanes on a motorway and parking in tight spaces. Two thirds said their old man is better at changing a tyre compared to just eight per cent who favoured their mother. It also emerged men are more likely to take the driving seat for family car journeys, according to 65 per cent of the youngsters polled. But this may be because half of the respondents said their mum is more susceptible to getting lost and having to ask for directions. Unfortunately for women, 46 per cent of children also said their mum is most likely to bump the vehicle on a kerb or another car, compared to just a sixth who believe their dad would do this. Mums play the best music though, according to 40 per cent of children, while only 31 per cent prefer dad’s tunes.

Although, 63 per cent of youngsters admitted to preferring to listen to their own playlists in the car to avoid hearing their parents’ choice. Dads were found to be most strict when driving, with the top in-car rules including no arguing (36 per cent), no wrappers or rubbish to be left in the vehicle (48 per cent) and no shoes on the seats (41 per cent). On the other hand, mums were typically found to be more talkative while in the driving seat.

Berberis thunbergii are deciduous shrubs which look particularly fabulous at this time year, producing highly coloured leaves, and often berries which last well into winter.

leaves in spring and summer which turn rich burgundy in autumn. If you'd like the purple colour all year round choose Berberis thunbergii f. atropurpurea, which has purple leaves in spring that turn rich mahogany in autumn.

These berries are actually edible and rich in vitamin C, though because they are very acidic, they are not widely consumed by people. They are an important food for many small birds though. They get their other name of 'barberry bush' because of their vicious spines. This makes them useful as an impenetrable barrier hedge and may be another reason why the berries aren’t harvested much!

There is a Berberis for most gardens: They can grow to a maximum height and spread of 1.5m, but there are now dwarf forms which grow to just 50cm, try 'Tiny Gold' or 'Lutin Rouge'. They grow best in full sun but also tolerate partial shade. They do well in most soil types, and even do well in drought, but will thrive particularly well in well drained moist soil. Their easy-going nature extends to aftercare, as they are generally pest-free and require little attention, other than a trim to tidy them up periodically. If you don't have much space or mainly grow in containers on a balcony 'Lutin Rouge' does very well in a pot.

Like the colourful Japanese Maple, they originate from Eastern Asia. Berberis vary in colour according to the cultivar and variety. The common Berberis thunbergii have green

Though Berberis are generally grown for their autumn colour, they are a hard-working shrub, and produce a mass of tiny yellow flowers in spring, providing interest at either end of the year.

Beautiful Berberis 54

Mid-September to October, and mid-March to April are the best times to plant so now is the perfect time. Dig a hole double the width of the root ball. Sprinkle in a handful of blood, fish and bone and work into the ground. Place the plant into the hole, fill in with soil around the root ball and firm the soil down gently but firmly, finish by watering well. They will appreciate being mulched with well-rotted organic matter in late spring, but they aren't fussy; grass cuttings will do fine.

My absolute favourite is Berberis thunbergii f. atropurpurea 'Admiration'. This lovely plant has extremely attractive orange-red foliage, edged with yellow, and forms an attractive mound shape. Its masses of small yellow flowers in the spring followed by purplecrimson berries in autumn make it the most perfect Berberis in my opinion. Happy gardening. By Rachael Leverton

Salvage the Bones by Jesmyn Ward It was a storm that made headlines around the world. In August 2005 Katrina hit the Louisiana coast causing great loss of life and destruction to New Orleans and the surrounding area. This award-winning novel, set over a period of 12 days, tells the story of the Batiste family who live in the fictional town of Bois Sauvage. Esch is 15 years old and lives with her three brothers and their father. Isolated from the rest of the small town due to the location of their house, they live in extreme poverty, with a largely absent father who, seven years after the death of his wife, still relies on drink to get through the day. So, with the news of a category 5 storm is about to hit they begin to prepare what they can and stockpile a small amount of food. Each chapter is one day in the build up to the storm. Randall, the eldest is trying to do what he can to hold his family together. Skeetah is preoccupied with his pit-bull fighting dog, China, who has just given birth to puppies. Junior, the youngest, is trying to hold his own against his older brothers. And Esch has just discovered that she is pregnant. A captivating story with engaging characters, immerses you in their world, illustrated by a touch of Greek mythology thanks to a book that Esch (the narrator) is reading for school. The penultimate chapter will have your heart racing but ultimately this is the story of family love that survives despite the poverty and deprivation.

Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls by Elena Favilli and Francesca Cavallo Not a traditional novel here but definitely worth a read. This incredibly popular book (which has sparked a second volume) presents the stories of 100 amazing women who have made contributions to society. It is aimed at telling girls that they can achieve anything that they put their mind to and that their gender should not hold them back. It’s challenges female stereotypes and inspires girls to aim high in their career choices. Each story is told on a single page, along with an illustration of the woman and this simple format gives a fantastic introduction to their lives. From mathematicians like Ada Lovelace (who actually built a machine and wrote the first computer programme back in the 19th century) to authors like the Bronte Sisters who defied the expectations of their patriarchal society. There are also tales of astronomers, activists, lawyers, chefs, naturalists, journalists, motocross racers, and even a tattoo artist. Following the huge success of this book a version aimed at boys has also been written: Stories for Boys Who Dare to be Different which also challenges male stereotypes which say that you have to be tough in order to succeed.
