A week or two ago, I received a phone call – 'Is that A Harling' Have you lost something?'I frantically searched around to see if I was indeed missing something, only to find it was my purse. I had dropped it on the way back from shopping. Luckily a lovely gentlemen who had just come back from holiday and decided he needed milk for a drink had popped down town and spotted my purse sitting in the middle of the car park. I forgot to ask the mans name but know he lives at Wessington Park, so if you are reading this a huge, huge thank you. This kind gesture certainly restores your faith in human nature.

Flaming June it has not been! According to the news however, July is going to be a heatwave, so maybe we can finally get those BBQ out and eat Al Fresco after all!! I wouldn't suggest visiting Paris any time soon, they are moving into a 41 degrees heatwave!! Moving forward, we have a packed magazine this month with food, home décor and travel. If you are looking for a holiday this year and not sure where to go, we have a feature on Romania, Ukraine and Moldova, maybe that will give you some inspiration. Me – well I am off to York for a few days. I have never been before but am assured the architecture is beautiful and I need to take my camera. Apparently they have a lovely cafe called Betty's so I am heading there to treat my friend to afternoon tea! One of my favourite shops, Rafi's Spice shop will be a must on my list!! I am addicted to them, my husband has banned me from buying anymore but who listens to their husband!!! Ha Ha Ha. Hence the new monthly 'Spice of Life' edit in the magazine.

Trowbridge spectacular lantern PARADE Trowbridge Town Council are delighted to announce a new and exciting event for Trowbridge this winter - a magical, spectacular lantern procession to form part of the Christmas Light Switch On Event on Saturday 30th November. Scores of beautiful, handcrafted willow lanterns will be paraded through the Town Centre led by a lively and colourful samba band! Creating a carnival feel and bringing the community of Trowbridge together! Trowbridge Town Council will be hosting a number of fun and instructional workshops in schools and the wider community, teaching traditional willow craft techniques and more. All of the lanterns will then culminate in a parade through the centre of Trowbridge on the evening of 30th November. We are currently seeking funding to enable us to host as many lantern making workshops as possible within schools and community groups in the local area. We hope for all of the workshops to be subsidised to enable all members of the community to get involved and showcase community creativity. If you would be interested in supporting this project financially or sponsoring this new and exciting event, then please get in touch – we would love to hear from you! If your school or community group would like to create lanterns for the parade, or if you would like to learn more about the event and workshops, or if you have space or venue to host a workshop then please get in touch. For any further information about any aspect of the lantern parade, please contact Victoria Spriggs, Event and Admin Support Officer, Trowbridge Town Council on 01225 765072

QUICHE Ingredients:

You will need: Large mixing bowl, large round baking tin.

For the pastry:

110g plain flour 25g butter 25g lard Pinch salt and pepper A little cold water

For the filling:

4slices bacon, chopped 75g cheese of choice 2 large eggs 1 large egg yolk 275ml double cream Small tin sweetcorn Sprinkle of chives

Simple and Delicious!

The key to a beautiful quiche is in great shortcrust pastry. You can either make your own as shown below or you can buy some ready-made if you prefer. In a large bowl, add the flour and the softened butter and lard. Using your fingers, blend the butter through the flour until you end up with breadcrumbs. Pop in the salt and pepper and mix up.

Slowly add a small amount of cold water to the mixture, using your hand to stir as you go. Don’t let the mixture get too sticky otherwise you may need to add a bit more flour. Knead gently to create a dough. Once the pastry has been left to chill for half an hour, roll it out to about 30 cm in diameter. Carefully using a rolling pin, transfer the

disc to your tin. With your hands, press the pastry into the tin to fully cover the base and the sides. Trim off any excess with a sharp knife or scissors. Pop the oven onto 180c/gas 4 with a baking sheet on the middle shelf. Whisk the eggs, yolk and cream with a little salt and pepper. Start to fill the pastry case with the cheese, leaving some for the top, the bacon and the sweetcorn and chives. Pour the egg mixture all over and then add the remainder of the cheese. With a brush, remove the remainder of the egg mixture and brush the pastry where visible. Put the quiche in the oven and bake for 35 minutes or until the surface is golden brown and the filling has set. Leave to cool and then enjoy with a mixed salad and new potatoes. 23

Meet . . .

After giving up smoking in 2008 I found myself replacing my nicotine habit with shortbread! Before long I hated the way I looked. I was lacking confidence and had such low self esteem I was stuck in a cycle of self destruction. My size was affecting my ability to get involved and play with my children. I hit rock bottom and decided something had to change. I walked through the doors of Slimming World and immediately felt a sense of relief. I was surrounded by people who understood how I felt and didn’t judge me for the way that I looked. It all sounded too good to be true I could eat food and lose weight but sure enough before I knew it the lbs were dropping off. I enjoyed all my favourite meals and couldn’t believe that nothing was off limits I was enjoying spaghetti bolognese, lasagne, and the Sunday Roast with my family but still I was losing weight! I never felt deprived and I loved how it fitted into our household so easily. Having struggled to play with my kids prior to joining I found myself joining a gym and loving body magic. Before I knew it I was picking up awards and dropping dress sizes. I no longer recognise the woman I once was I have a new zest for life. Slimming World has changed my life so much that, 3 dress sizes smaller and almost 2 stone lighter, I now have the confidence to become a consultant and help others just like me. Al Fresco for Foodies and Drinkies

Some suggestions for places to visit in the Calne area from Chef at The Talbot Inn The Greyhound

Tara and her team know their stuff. The building itself has beautiful features. Look out for the wonderful and fully safe glass capped well in a cosy dining room. The star for me though is the wonderful outside garden, great for listening to birdsong whilst trying some of the delicious, food and drink on offer.

The Lansdowne Arms

Seating for a 100 outside at the back with wonderful views outside. Perfect spot to eat after a morning in Bowood estate?

The Black Horse

Under new management, Kay a seasoned, passionate and highly trained chef has taken the horse’s reins and is driving the food and

drink offer forward. Wonderful outside space to watch the world go by over a pint or a glass of wine whilst trying their food from pub classics to tapas based treats.

The Lansdowne

Wonderful space and polished, attentive team. A great chef and a menu that is as contemporary as it is comforting. At the rear is a quiet enclave in the centre of Calne. As great for a coffee and cake, as it is, for a decent meal.

For those who don’t like eating outside OR who are looking for a cute spot for a date, how about eating inside of a safe? Try the Safe Room at The Old Bankhouse in Calne for cocktails ...

The Talbot Inn

If you are into proper British pubs, locally sourced, tasty affordable food, a great atmosphere, delicious gins, well kept pints, and great value, this might be your place. A genuine welcome from Mer and her team. An added bonus is eating outside in the sun in a sizable garden that your kids can enjoy as much as you do.

Dog and Fox Inn (Bradford-on-Avon)

An olde worlde charm seeps through every beam of this 18thC (and possibly older building). A snug bar, well appointed dining room and a genuine welcome from the landlord. A lovely outside space, in a beautiful location. The food is lovingly crafted and the menu is appealing.

is National Ice Cream Month.

BASIL A super culinary herb, basil is versatile and widely used in many dishes and comes in over 60 varieties incorporating scents reminiscent of lemon, cinnamon, pineapple or cloves. Many people associate the combination of basil and tomato as classically Mediterranean in flavour as well as Pesto which is made from basil leaves and pine nuts.

Basil plants look a little like peppermint and this is because they belong to the same plant family. Choosing fresh over dried is preferable as the flavour is far superior and don’t be put off as it keeps well. If it is cut it can be wrapped in a slightly damp paper towel and kept in the fridge. You can freeze whole or chopped basil in airtight containers, or pop some into ice cube trays and cover with stock for use when preparing stews or soups.

Celebrate with these homemade icecream recipes!

Large and medium sized mixing bowls, blender, medium saucepan, electric mixer, freezer-safe container.

Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 10 minutes Servings: 12 Ingredients: 250g raspberries 225g caster sugar 2 large eggs 4 egg yolks 600ml double cream Raspberries or other fruit for serving

IT'S A SCOOP! Ingredients: 4 cups of ripe peaches 1/2 teaspoon of lemon juice 1/2 cup granulated sugar 2 cups double cream 1 can sweetened condensed milk. Method: Start by creating the peach puree, which is super simple. Soak the peaches in the sugar and lemon in a medium bowl for about an hour which helps to soften them by drawing out the moisture. You’ll see a syrup beginning to accumulate in the bowl during this time. Blend with a stick or other blender until pureed...

Raspber Ripple ry

Heat gently for about 5 minutes to reduce the liquid. This will assist in making a stronger flavour as well as thickening it up a bit. Put back into the bowl and refrigerate for a couple of hours, until cold. Add the heavy cream to a large bowl. Using an electric mixer, beat the cream until stiff peaks form. Then, on a low speed, slowly pour in the condensed milk then turn high and beat until thickened. Add 2 cups of the whipped cream to the puree and mix well until combined. Fold in the remaining cream. Transfer to a freezer-safe container and freeze for at least 6 hours.

Method: Place the raspberries in a pan with 2 tbsp of the sugar. Cook on a medium heat until sugar dissolves into the pulp. Simmer for 5 mins until thickened, then push the pulp through a sieve into a bowl and discard the seeds. Place the eggs, egg yolks and remaining sugar into a bowl. Whisk with an electric whisk hand whisk to combine everything, then place over a pan of gently simmering water – the bowl should not touch the water. Beat with the electric whisk for 3-4 mins until thick and pale. Remove from heat and continue beating with the whisk until cool. In another bowl, whisk the cream until it forms soft peaks, then gently fold into the cool egg mix until just combined. Pour the mix into a shallow container or dish that can be frozen. Just before you freeze the mixture gently swirl the raspberry puree through, cover with cling film and freeze for at least 6 hrs. Remove from the freezer about 20 minutes before serving. Place scoops of the ice cream into bowls with extra raspberries or other fruit. It's also gorgeous in cones.

Home Decor

TRENDS Home furnishings can look altered at different times of year – with all that summery sunshine spilling into your home, are you noticing that things don’t look quite how you’d like them to? Whether the good weather is highlighting that your interior décor is looking worn and tired, or perhaps just picking up on styles and accessories you’ve grown out of, this summer could be the perfect time to redecorate.

Whether you want to update a room with a lick of paint or coordinate accessories to give the atmosphere a lift, read on to find out what interior décor has been trending in 2019.

Hot Colours this season

While we all have our favourite colours, redecorating can be difficult if your colour of preference isn’t in style. When a certain shade gains popularity, you can’t go anywhere without seeing products in that hue. Mustard yellow has been trending for a year or so now, and can still be spotted on everything from cushions and lampshades to cardigans and handbags. Pantone's 2019 Colour of the Year is ‘living coral’ – a vibrant shade somewhere between orange and pink. Teal and lilac grey are also trending – both of which pair well with mustard, or with a light eggshell blue. On the environmental line, natural colours are popular as well, such as clay browns, misty grey, and forest green. Family run flooring and tile Specialist with over 40 years experience, based in Bath, Chippenham and the South West. Amtico approved retailers. 52 The Causeway, Chippenham SN15 3DD Business Hours: MON to FRI - 8.00am to 5.00pm SATURDAY - 9.00am to 4.00pm SUNDAY - Closed 38

When choosing colours, think about what you already have in the room what won’t be changed – anything new will have to complement this. Also, design experts recommend a palate of three colours – a main colour and secondary colour that should pair really well, and a third colour for minimal highlights that bring a pop of vibrancy.

Chippenham Kitchens

While choosing Scandinavian furnishings isn’t a new trend, there has been a revived popularity because of the eco-friendly look. Scandi style is typified by clean white or grey vibes with bursts of colour to accentuate, minimalist furniture in wood or metal rather than plastic, and plush fabrics for a softer feel. Scandi is also a great look to have year-round – in the summer, the sleek, no nonsense look is easy on the eye and cool for warmer weather, but is easy to switch to a cosy look in winter for that hygge feel, with piles of faux fur blankets and textured fabrics.

Who doesn’t like a bit of shabby chic? The best thing is, this look doesn’t have to cost the earth – pick up a bargain from your local charity shop and give yourself a DIY project this summer. Go for a plain, rustic look by combining white wood paint and sandpaper, or buy some cute stencils and create unique pieces in colours that match your room.

It’s the Little Don’t want to splash out on new furniture? Perhaps you rent and aren’t allowed to paint the walls?

Either way, you can still transform a room by focussing on the accessories. Lampshades, scatter cushions, rugs, throws, vases, picture frames… a few small changes can make all the difference. If you can’t decide on a colour scheme to work with, how about picking a theme instead? From beach to forest, bold Nigerian prints to calming Japanese zen, geometric patterns to Disney princess prints… think about what inspires you and really make the room your own.

friendly finish If you do need to bring something new into your home, consider buying second hand.

Most people have the environment on their minds more than ever, and one place where people can change their habits to make a big difference to our planet is in home furnishings. Being mindful about what you buy – and where you buy it from – can have a great impact on the environment. When updating anything from furniture to accessories, ask yourself whether your current pieces can be upcycled for a new look, rather than forking out for something new. You’d be surprised how a bit of sandpaper and a lick of paint can transform an old coffee table or unit, and many household products can be repurposed for a new lease of life.

Across Wiltshire there are dedicated furniture charity shops (such as Dorothy House and the British Heart Foundation) who sell good quality pieces at cut prices. Not only are you saving something from the tip and spending less money, you’re also supporting a worthwhile cause. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, don’t just head straight to Ikea for a carbon copy piece in mass produced plastic. While local artisans charge more for their bespoke pieces, your purchase will be supporting a local business and helping the economy. For one of a kind, quality pieces, visit local tradespeople and artists.

il ving Wicker and Rattan are trending this year as they’re cheaper than wood and easy to care for. The lightweight design makes them easier to move around, but they have a shorter life than sturdier furniture. Look for solid pieces with sturdy weaves and gaps that aren’t too big. You’ll probably need a cushion with woven chairs.

However big your garden is, you can find furniture to suit your space. Fold-away patio sets or compact bistro pieces are perfect for small gardens, and furniture in rattan is all the rage for bigger gardens this year. As well as size and style, think carefully about the material best suited to your garden. Wrought Iron pieces go in and out of fashion, but they are robust, durable and have a traditional look to them. A wrought iron set will never blow away in high winds!

Aluminium is the easiest material to care for – it’s cheap, lightweight and doesn’t decay quickly. On the downside, aluminium pieces often blow around in windy weather, and can get very hot in warm weather. Cheap pieces won’t endure rough treatment. For a step above, look for steel or metal garden furniture.

Whatever material you go for, remember you can alter the look with some stylish garden cushions or throws. Grab a second hand bargain if you’re on a budget, but look out for quality – especially with woven pieces (fraying) and wooden (rot). Finally, measure up both your outdoor space and garden access before you buy! 44

Picnic Savvy

Wood is the traditional favourite and can come in everything from easy fold-away chairs to huge, bespoke centrepieces. Cost escalates quickly, but so does quality – wood is susceptible to rot, cracking and splintering if not properly cared for. Research what wood treatments your piece will need. On the plus side, wood is sturdy and can last a long time if cared for correctly.

If you like al fresco dining, get on the eco-friendly trend by ditching those single use paper plates and plastic forks. Buy a good quality picnicware set that will last you for years – choose products made from melamine rather than cheap, see-through plastic ones as they’ll last longer and look much better. A 12-piece set can cost as little as £20, or splash out and get an all-inone with a stylish hamper.

5 Tips for choosing a professional

Carpet Cleaner Cheap is rarely best - However attractive saving a few quid might seem, the least expensive option might actually do more harm than good. Companies that offer heavily discounted rates may use substandard cleaning products that could permanently damage your carpets. Price is important but it should not be number one on your list of questions to ask.

Know the Process - Cleaning services are all different so ask questions. How does each company that go about their business? Some companies might use stronger detergents, while others might use more environmentally friendly options. How long will the drying time be? Knowing the exact process each company employs will help you to decide who to hire. Do your research - Talk to friends and family. Check review sites and ask for recommendations on social media. The best services are found through word of mouth, so do the research and leverage your network for trustworthy recommendations. Ask About Additional Services – You don’t want hidden surprises so make sure you know whether there will be extra services? And how much the company will charge for them? Will they move furniture if they need to? How will they manage difficult-to reach areas? Are they insured and registered? Are environmentally friendly products more expensive? Keep it Local if Possible - A local carpet cleaning company will have a vested interest in keeping you happy. Local companies provide services for other local residents too, so it is in their best interest to offer a high-quality service at affordable costs to ensure customer retention.

ENJOY the fruits of your labour

Ideas to help you enjoy your garden when you’re not busy working in it.

Not every day should be given up toiling over herb beds or borders. Whilst there are always a myriad of jobs to do in the garden, whether it’s a big or small plot, surely the point of having some outside space is to settle in occasionally, and enjoy the fruits of your labour?

can get the simple ‘pop up’ ones with weighted bases that often sit in the middle of a patio table to help stabilise them. If you want to be a little bit more horizontal then you may prefer to choose a cantilever parasol that is hung from its mount and sits to the side (in other words a ‘lean over’ brolly) which you can position nicely over a set of reclining armchairs or steamers.

we’re trying to achieve we don’t want you sitting next to ‘another job’.

Wind can often be a bit irritating when relaxing and may be enough to hoof you off your chair and do jobs so you need to protect yourself from the odd breeze. A hedge is ideal but requires maintenance, as well as it taking time to grow of course. And for the purposes of what

If you’re up to something that involves more work, consider a hard landscaped, sunken area in your garden. Stepping down into your haven of relaxation, and disappearing down from the rest of the world may be just enough to help you settle in for an hour or two.

An alternative would be an artificial ivy attached to a trellis style fence which can be attached to two secure posts in the ground to create a quick, yet attractive, wind break.

We know it can be tricky to sit back and try to ignore that little weed that’s just poking it’s head up underneath the hydrangea, or the pruning that needs to be done in the hanging baskets, but it’s worth taking the time to put your feet up and take a look at everything you, and the wonderful world of nature, have achieved. So how can you do this without feeling too stressed or fidgety? First of all we recommend setting aside some space that is totally dedicated to relaxing. If you know that this is your place to just chill out, you may be less likely to keep jumping up to ‘fiddle’. Pick a place that is reasonably sheltered if possible. If you have quite an open garden you can create shelter using various methods. A simple patio umbrella will provide shade from the afternoon sun and these come in different styles. You

This isn’t a job for the faint hearted though so you may need to employ the help of professional landscapers. That said, you can really change the look of your garden and use many different finishes to achieve the end result.

Sitting comfortably is very important. Whilst metal bistro sets might look beautifully vintage and stylish, I’m not sure I wish to sit for long on them and whilst they might be useful to perch for a quick afternoon tea with a friend, they’re not really designed to kick your shoes off and settle in with a good book. Have a think about how you are most comfortable and look for some garden furniture that would suit you. For some, sitting upright but with a cushioned seat and back is sufficient. For others, a fully reclining chair with head cushion and arm rests is absolutely essential. Consider the weather in your area and make sure that the materials you choose are robust enough

to endure heat, wet or cold, and consider purchasing suitable covers that are easy to put on and take off quickly when you wish. A bug bear of mine is that once you take off covers and perhaps wish to add extra cushions, there is no storage for them to be put away again. Consider some garden trunks which come in both wood or plastic versions and ensure that they are water tight. If your cushions are designed for outdoor use they should cope well with storage of this kind and it means that you don’t spend the first 10 minutes or so of your precious down time faffing about with walking back and forth to the shed / indoor cupboard with the little luxuries to make your time with your book (or gin and tonic) a bit of a work up. If you opt for a set of steamers or reclining patio chairs, make sure you have a little table or something attractive upon which to place drinks, sunscreens and any other items that you need to make your outside time enjoyable. Solar powered lights are a fabulous addition so that when we get a balmy evening you can snuggle up with a light blanket and enjoy the twinkling around you, knowing that they are powered purely by the sunlight.

And you never know.... If you plan your outside space just right you might even enjoy it much that you can sit from dawn until dusk with no interruptions! 57

HOME FOCUS Outdoor living Space is often a premium with homes nowadays. Driveways are a luxury and gardens are getting smaller. Utilising every piece of available space is becoming an artform in itself so as we look to how we can best use the area we have, it’s worth considering how we employ our outside space.

consider if you’re able to create an area of privacy, perhaps with some hedging or trellis, and pop out a couple of bistro chairs and a table, or a simple garden bench so that you can sit with a cup of tea and watch the world go by.

Many American homes create additional living space on their front porch. Agreed the weather is often kinder than it is in the UK, but we do have times when we could readily enjoy a living space to the front of the house. If you think about it, most homes with front gardens are there simply for show. They generally serve very little purpose (apart from to allow parking space occasionally) and oftentimes become a chore to create something that is only enjoyed on the walk in through the front door. No matter how small the front of your house is,

If you are lucky to have more space, then a front porch with open sides and a roof (rather than the enclosed, boot-room style) could be a great use of space. Outdoor rugs and furniture are easy to come by nowadays which means that you can dress the area to suit the style of your house. The addition of a small table provides practical storage space for either a pretty plant or a solar light. In fact, solar lights come in so many shapes and sizes now that these are great additions to all gardens. You can add ones on strings,

posts etc and by strategically placing them around the plot you can create a lovely atmosphere for those late, balmy evenings that you can enjoy in the summer.

By opening up your doors in this way you also create a disabledfriendly living area which is great for wheelchair users or even those who find walking a little harder. If you’d rather not sit out the front of your house then look to creating something similar to a porch out the back instead of a traditional patio. By using folding doors which are flush to the height of your outside space, you can make the zones really flow seamlessly. It also makes carrying drinks and snacks outside so much easier as you don’t have to negotiate any steps or thresholds.

Seating outside is also important. On trend at the moment are hanging chairs which come in a variety of styles. You can get these on a fixed frame or ones which hang from a roof beam. There’s something very relaxing about gently swinging in the breeze with a beverage and listening to the noises of the garden around you. Pop a couple of cushions on the chair and grab a blanket if there’s a breeze.

You can snuggle up and swing to your hearts content. If you don’t mind lighting a little fire, then a firepit or chimnea can provide warmth on a summers evening. They’re also great for toasting marshmallows—an old fashioned pastime perhaps but one which everyone enjoys. Just be careful not to sit too closely or your clothes are likely to end up smelling of smoke. Alternatively there are gas versions available which are very effective. Although one could question why you’d pay to heat an outdoor space! But still, whether you have a small balcony or an acreage, there are things you can do to enjoy fresh air and relax at the same time.

Choose the right

mower for your lawn.

Regular mowing is the key to an attractive, green and healthy lawn. You’ll need a mower, but which one should you choose?

By Tom Hancock

Small lawns - Many suburban homes have tiny lawns. A manual push lawn mower or rotary mower is powered by you pushing it rather than by electricity. The blades are mounted in a cylinder, which revolves when the mower is pushed. This produces a precise, even mowing result. They tend to be very compact which makes them manoeuvrable and easy to store.

Larger lawn - Petrol mowers are good bigger lawns, where an extension cord becomes impractical. These mowers are powerful, but also heavy as they are often quite sizeable. They are less environmentally friendly because of the exhaust emissions. If you have more than 500 square metres of grass, you’ll probably be better off with a ride-on petrol mower.

Small or medium-sized lawn - If your lawn is a little

All lawn mowers are available in various mowing widths. Generally speaking, the wider the lawn mower, the quicker you’ll get the job done. But you need to consider that wider mowers are less manoeuvrable.

bigger or you don’t fancy a manual mower, an electric lawn mower might be for you. They run from a power source and make light work of your lawn. Electric mowers for smaller lawns are usually very easy to manoeuvre around objects. Most come with a handy container or bag to collect clippings. They are also pretty quiet and are available in energy-efficient versions. Just be aware that even with a small lawn you will probably need an extension cord. It’s wise to invest in a power breaker for safety. Accidents do happen.

As a rule of thumb small lawns require a mowing width of around 29-33cm (11-13 inches); medium-sized lawns require a mowing width of around 38cm (15 inches).; large lawns may require widths larger than this, but all choices will depend on whether the lawn is ornamental, with features like ponds and trees, in which case a smaller mower might

be better, or whether it’s more of an open grassy space. Most mowers are height adjustable. In other words, you can increase or decrease the distance between the blades and the ground to cut the grass at just the right height for you or the time of year. You can now buy mulching mowers. These cut the grass clippings into tiny pieces and blow them evenly into the grass. This method has the advantage of preventing the soil from drying out and gives fungus less chance to develop. A strimmer is a useful gadget for neatening up along walls, fences and the edge of flowerbeds. You can get more powerful versions which will let you attack weeds too. It’s best to wear safety goggles when using one as they generate a lot of flying debris. 63

Recently a friend of mine decided to convert his garage to a games room. The big screen TV was to be the main feature. We all gathered for the big turn on to experience Netflix in full ultra HD. But all we got was a blocky, stuttering, unwatchable excuse for entertainment. It turned out that his wireless router (the bit that connects to his broadband) was plugged in at the opposite end of the house. The reception at this end of the house had always been poor, but the extra wall of the garage was just too much for the signal to push through. Result? No internet! What to do? The router had to stay by the phone socket so moving that to the centre of the house wasn't an option. Running a network cable (a permanent wire) from the router to the TV was a non-starter because it would involve a lot of work. This meant he had to work out a different way to boost the Wi-Fi signal in the garage.

A Wi-Fi repeater is basically a second router. You put it where you receive a good signal and it then creates a new Wi-Fi area that connects to your broadband. He could have sited that in the centre of the house and thus improved the signal in the garage. There would be a bit of setting up to get this working as you have to log on to the repeater with a computer, but it's not hard if you know what you're doing. There are YouTube tutorials which can help. The second option is the simplest, and ultimately the one he settled on – a powerline adaptor. This is a box that plugs into your router and then into a mains socket. It actually uses your house wiring to send your broadband signal around the house. All you need to do is buy a powerline Wi-Fi extender and plug it into the wall in the room where you need it most. It’s like you're sitting right beside your Wi-Fi point.

The set-up was quick and easy Stairlift (literally pressing two buttons) and he was up and T specialise and running with full broadbandWe speed. His in the i teens could now get Youtube in thelives garden an easier thatas much extra bonus because he put an extra extender in a socket on the wall next to the patio.

I'd had a similar problem in my home and had discovered Wi-Fi extenders and repeaters (different companies call them by different names, but they all do the same thing).

changes which will affect us all! From July 2019 Primary Care and Community Care health services are going to be run differently throughout England, thanks to a new change brought about under the latest NHS GP Contract. The basic idea behind forming these Primary Care Networks is so that the historical divide between Primary Care (GP Surgeries) and Community Care (District Nurses etc) will be dissolved and people will be able to access the care they need more easily, with services tailored around

the needs of the patients who are registered at GP Surgeries within a Primary Care Network. Here in Calne, we hope to see our GP Practices working more closely and sharing resources in a way that will help to reduce unnecessary workload on our GP’s so that they can see patients with more complex needs and have quality appointment time to spend with them. We all read in the news about how stretched the NHS is and most of us are well aware how hard

our GP Surgeries in Calne work to make help keep us healthy and support our wellbeing. The Network is about providing services for patients that improve care. This will be accomplished by networks employing staff like Paramedics, Physiotherapists and Specialist Pharmacists who will work across the Practices alongside Nurses, Advanced Nurse Practitioners and Doctors. NHS England have produced a 3 minute animation explaining the concept of

Primary Care Networks, which is well worth watching. It can be viewed on YouTube: watch?v=W19DtEsc8Ys As Patients, we can help ensure our Primary Care thrives by using these new roles when we need care and understanding that being directed to a clinical specialist role such as a Nurse, Paramedic, Pharmacist or Physiotherapist may be better for us than seeing a Doctor. We will have a wealth of channels we can use to seek health advice and care. These clinicians are experts in their field and work alongside our Named Accountable GP to make sure we have access to the best care possible. Seeing

our own GP for every ailment just isn’t feasible and means that patients who have really complex needs could have delayed routine care as a result. By speaking to our Receptionists or using Online Symptom checkers such as Doctorlink, we as patients will benefit from advice easier and quicker as our care is directed to the most appropriate clinical specialist. As with all innovations, there is a timeframe and milestones that need to be hit along the way – the Primary Care Network project is planned over five years and we can imagine how much extra work this will incur for our Practice Managers and GPs to achieve success. But here in Calne we are

slightly ahead of the game in that we already have a Clinical Pharmacist working across the surgeries and Beversbrook Surgery have been using a Paramedic to assist with home visits for some time . A First Contact Physiotherapist service is planned in the near future, to complement the existing self-referral to Physiotherapy which has been working very well for Calne patients over the past few years. This is all good news for Calne. It might be a different way of working but it means that our GP Surgeries will be able to cope with the demand of our rapidly expanding town! LOOK PRETTY without make-up

1. Exfoliate

3. Moisturise

Exfoliation is key for glowing skin. You should be exfoliating once or twice a week to help your skin look young and smooth. Exfoliating removes dead skin cells, revealing healthier, fresher skin, and if you have acne marks, it will work to fade them. Once you remove the dead layer of skin that makes your face feel dull and tired, you’ll have skin that shines, even without make-up!

It’s crucial that you moisturise. Otherwise, your skin is likely to become very dry. Moisturising is key to healthy looking skin providing hydration, making it easier for your skin to reflect light and give off a natural glow. Dehydrated skin, on the other hand, can look rough, grey and dull, so make sure to moisturise day and night!

2. Tighten Your Pores There are ways to tighten and hide your pores without make-up. Splash your face with cold water. Cold water causes your blood vessels to constrict, making your skin look more even. You can also use a pore tightening serum to minimize the look of pores.

4. Tone Toners work wonders to enhance your skin and are designed to help restore the skin’s pH balance. Disrupted pH balance can lead to inflammation, dryness, and ageing skin. Toners give your skin a refreshing lift, helping to repair, restore and renew your skin. They can help minimize the appearance of large pores, protect your skin from environmental stressors throughout the day.

5. Drink and Sleep Your Way to Glowing Skin Drinking water and getting a proper night’s sleep is key for good skin. Try 8 glasses of water a day and 8 hours of sleep at night to let your skin repair, get rid of dark circles, and make you look awake and refreshed!

6. Groom Your Brows. Your brows have the power to frame your entire face, so as long as you groom them the way you like, they can completely enhance your face without make-up. Remove stray hairs to help frame your eyes and give you more defined facial features. You can trim or pluck at home, or go to a salon to get your brows waxed and shaped by a professional. If your brows are really light and fair, you can get your eyebrows tinted to make them stand out!

7. Elongate Your Lashes When you’re not wearing make-up, it’s usually best to draw attention to your eyes. Long, lush lashes are a great way to do this, and you can do so without mascara. If you already have full lashes, a quick flick of an eyelash curler will do the trick! Or, you can opt for a lash growing serum to nourish and elongate your lashes.

8. Whiten Your Teeth Whitening your teeth can brighten up your entire face, and is one of the best beauty hacks around! You don’t necessarily want them to look bleached white, you want them to be harmonious with your face.

So how can Coaching help? Professional coaching involves the use of NLP (or Neuro Linguistic Programming). NLP is a set of techniques that help the mind to interpret difficult experiences in more tolerable ways. This enables the client to experience a painful memory without the pain associated with it. Jason Fox, the ex-Royal Marine Commando of “SAS: Who Dares Wins” fame, experienced PTSD after his combat experiences. His route back to good mental health involved seeing both a psychotherapist and a life coach. In his book, “Battle Scars” he writes that “Malcolm [the coach] helped me come to terms with darker images that were forever lurking in my mind.” Working with a coach if you have PTSD will involve interrupting the patterns of thinking and remembering in your mind, calming the fear response and finding new ways to focus on the future.

What Eye Shadow Colour Suits Your Eyes?

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder was first recognised in servicemen who had experienced severe trauma in combat. However PTSD is not limited to the military; anyone experiencing a traumatic event or repeated traumatic events, can suffer from PTSD. Being attacked, experiencing a serious or sudden illness, traumatic childbirth, witnessing other people dying or getting hurt and many other difficult experiences can cause PTSD. Summed up, PTSD involves remembering a past event as if it were happening today.

How HMRC Payments on Account are calculated and what to expect. If you recently started trading as selfemployed, your first income tax bill will be due in January following your first trading year, which can be a bit of a shock! This is because your first tax bill, due in the January, will commonly include an extra 50% as a Payment On Account (‘POA’) towards the tax bill for the following year. In addition, a further POA of 50% must be made the following July. So, within a six month period, you could have to pay two years’ income tax! If, say, in your first year of selfemployment, your tax bill, based on your 2018/19 profits is £2,000, you will, by default, have to pay tax of £3,000 (£2,000 plus £1,000 POA towards 2019/20) in January 2020. Then in July 2020, you must pay tax of £1,000 (the second POA towards 2019/20). After this, there will be six months’ worth of tax payable every six months – and a further balancing payment (or possibly a refund) every January. Because of how POA’s are calculated, selfemployed people can often find their tax bills seem out of in sync with their income. blog-post/explaining-hmrc-payments-accountjanuary-and-july

N.B. For Limited Companies, Corporation Tax

is always payable 9 months after an accounting year end. 01793 818400 @AMSAccountancy

Malmesbury League of Friends (MLOF) has presented the Malmesbury outpatients physiotherapy department at the Malmesbury Primary Care Centre (MPCC) with new equipment costing just under £5,000. The new physiotherapy equipment, which includes two exercise bicycles, one rowing machine, a set of rubber coated dumbbells with storage rack, and a weights exercise bench, will enable the department to offer improved facilities to MPCC patients . The department provides around 850 treatment sessions and assesses some 300 patient referrals each month. John Cooper, the Physiotherapy Team Leader, said: “ We are extremely grateful to MLOF for their generous donation, which will enable us to offer improved treatments to an evergrowing number of patients, covering a broad range of medical conditions.” David Hide, MLOF chairman, said: “ We are delighted to have been able to support this request, which will enable more patients who need these treatments to benefit from them and more quickly.”

New Exhibits

DuncanJoyce 73x90 AW.indd 1 Graham Smith,

The Atwell Wilson Motor Museum in Calne is very pleased to announce two new exhibits which have just arrived. The Museum has a close relationship with the British Motor Museum, Gaydon, and they have entrusted these wonderful rare cars to be shown in Calne, adding to the collection which is a particular feature of the Great West Way initiative. The classic vehicles on loan are a 1910 Austin 7hp, making it the oldest car on show and probably the only survivor of the 162 Austin-badged single-cylinder models produced between 1909 and 1911; and a 1936 MG NB Magnette, which was the last of the classic prewar 6 cylinder o v e r h e a d camshaft MG models.

one of the Directors 27/04/2012 of The 19:57 Atwell Wilson Motor Museum said: “We are particularly excited to receive these wonderful machines as part of the loan relationship between the British Motor Museum and the Atwell Wilson Motor Museum. The museum in Calne has a fascinating collection of classic cars and motorbikes and these cars add to the width and quality of the collection. If you have yet to visit the Museum, please put us on your ‘to do’ list and not miss the opportunity to wallow in nostalgia!!” Find out more information about the Museum at:

RX450H L PREMIER 2018 By Tim Barnes-Clay

Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) seem to be the flavour of the last few years in Britain. Lexus seems to have unearthed the formula to make them satisfying and far from bland. This is a sizeable family-friendly machine – the RX450h L Premier is an extended, sevenseat variant of Lexus’ top SUV, the RX450h. If you want an SUV to give you loads of kit, brilliant quality, superb refinement and oodles of comfort, then this Lexus could be the vehicle for you. Lexus has an excellent reputation for reliability. By adding 110mm behind the back wheels and two more leather seats, Lexus has done a good job when it comes to fitting extra occupants into the RX450h. This third row of seating folds electrically out of the load area’s floor, while the second tier of chairs slide to allow you access to the rearmost set. The RX450h gives you a boost in boot room from 453 litres to 495 litres, with a maximum of 966 litres with all five

rear seats collapsed.

The emphasis is on comfort, with the cooled and heated front seats that keep you feeling supported and fatigue-free on long journeys. The muted hybrid powertrain adds a bit of electric power at low speeds as well as a 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine. You can easily achieve 45mpg around town or 35mpg on a motorway commute. The Lexus’ whole character doesn’t lend itself to being athletic – it is all about being chilled out in cosy luxury. There’s lots of kit on the Premier version, and there is a large infotainment screen that’s controlled via a slightly fiddly mouse. What’s more, this car comes with an audio treat in the form of a Mark Levinson 15-speaker sound system. The RX450h L Premier feels special in every department – especially the cabin. On top of this, you have that bullet-proof Lexus dependability. And that last point is what you need when looking for a plush car that will serve you and your family well.

True Freedom by Michael Dean Set in Boston and London over sixteen years, True Freedom, A Novel is a panoramic account of how America came to fight Britain for its freedom in the eighteenth century. The scene is set through vignettes about the people and events that shaped history: Samuel Adams, The Sons of Liberty, Thomas Young, John Wilkes, the Boston Tea Party and Massacre. True Freedom is full of vivid period details; you can almost smell Parliament in London and feel the determination of the Boston people to defy Parliament. In his novel Michael Dean takes us right to the heart of identity and sovereignty by focusing on personal relationships. ‘History buffs will relish Michael Dean’s meticulously researched True Freedom’ – Lisa Barr ‘True Freedom is a fascinating insight into the breakdown in relations between the British government and the American colonies.’ – Stephan Collishaw True Freedom, ISBN 9781907320866, published by Holland Park Press.

A Lily in the Light

by Kristen Fields

A child going missing is every parent’s worst nightmare. And many books have been written with this as the main plot device, as the parents try to cope with events that follow. However, this debut novel approaches it from a different angle. Esme is 11 years old and for her, ballet is life. She is on the brink of every young ballerina’s dream as she is told that she is ready to go ‘en pointe’. But this joy is snatched from her one evening as the family gather to enjoy a meal. Suddenly, and inexplicably, Esme’s four-year-old sister Lily disappears. The family starts to fall apart, but as readers we experience this through the eyes of Esme, not her parents. In the second half of the novel the action switches to Paris eight years later where Esme is performing as a ballerina. We learn of the intervening years. How Esme felt that she lost so much more than a sister; she lost her parents too. She has used dance to take herself away from it all. Until she receives a phone call from her older sister, on the other side of the Atlantic. Are the family about to learn of Lily’s fate, and how will they bring themselves together, healing divisions and unspoken accusations? 87

The Town Crier Magazine | MARCH 2019

s I write this article my garden is bursting into life with wild and cultivated flowers and they are attracting all kinds of insect life. As I see plants burst into life it takes me back to the first thing I ever remember growing. It was a sunflower seed that I had planted in a pot at school. I don't really remember how tall it grew, but I do remember how amazed I was at the size of the flower. Over the year I have treasured seeing a mass of sunflowers in a field. It is such an incredible sight. The flowers are fascinating specimens of nature, and they allow us to see firsthand how plants are not the static plants we think they are. The flowers actually face the sun as it rises in the east and follow it across the sky until it sets in the west. Most plants are known to synchronize with the light in their surroundings and the sunflower does it by using a hormone which is sensitive to sunlight. The hormone does everything it can to seek the shade and travel from the part of the plant bathed in sunlight to the shaded region in the stem. The flower ends up bending in the opposite direction - towards the Sun. Facing the sun gives the flower an advantage in pollination as warm flowers attract insects. It is therefore in the plant's best interest that the flower always faces the Sun, so it is clearly visible to the pollinating insects. In my garden I have evening primroses growing in a patch with other wild flowers. I was amazed the other day to discover that the plant can hear the buzzing of bees which stimulate the plant to produce 20% more nectar. The plants

don't hear as we hear. Scientists exposed the plants in the lab to silence, recordings of honeybees and computer generated sounds. It turned out that only the plants exposed to the honeybee recordings increased their concentration of sugary nectar. An increase of 20% or more. The scientists discovered that the bowl shaped flowers receive and amplify the sound waves a bit like a satellite dish, and the sweeter the nectar the more the insects are drawn to the flower. When I think of the sunflower and the evening primrose and how in tune with nature they are as they synchronize themselves with their surroundings, I think of the Creator God who made them and laid down the laws of nature and I'm in awe of all that he has done. The flowers move to the rhythm of God's creation, and we humans have lost something of that. We have lost something of the creator's beat. Yet the more in tune we are to God and his creation the more of God's characteristics we demonstrate to the world around us. God sent his Holy Spirit into the world as our helper, and like the evening primrose, so in tune with the honeybee that it starts producing more sugary nectar, so we, in tune with the Spirit produce more of God's likeness in our lives demonstrating his love, justice and forgiveness to the world. Next time you are struck by a beautiful flower you might like to think on these things. Blessings on you all Rev Sam King ( Design & Computer Graphics by Alexander S. Grenfell, Calne.
