MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

I am pleased to share with you the 2023 Spring and Summer Program Guide. This guide contains information about a variety of recreation programs and activities for all ages. Check out programs geared to those interested in swimming, fitness, dance, art, cooking and more.

Are you wondering how to keep your kids busy during the summer? Our camps are full of activities and adventures! The Town of Aurora offers a variety of camp programs throughout the year.

Town camps are fun, safe and led by qualified staff. Camps are open to children ages 4+ and are designed to meet the diverse interests, learning and developmental needs of all participants. There are also leadership camps and volunteer opportunities for youth between the ages of 12 to 15. Take a read through our guide and check out all the exciting programming options for you and your family.

Aurora is a community that is active and healthy. Our Town has a vast array of walking trails, open spaces and parks. If you are looking to take a hike and explore the outdoors, I encourage you to discover our multi-use trail system that spans over 62 kilometres. Visit aurora.ca/parks to learn more.

REGISTER ONLINE

• Go to the www.aurora.ca/programguide website.

• View the interactive virtual Program Guide online.

• Click on the Code # for the program of your choice.

• You will automatically be directed to our e-PLAY online registration system.

ONLINE REGISTRATION

Note: Register in-person at the AFLC or SARC.

• Click on Enroll Now and sign into your account to Register Online.

NOTE

• Online registration starts at 6:00am on the first day of registration.

• When using the e-PLAY website, you can search by code # or program name.

• For assistance, please email Customer Service at rleisure@aurora.ca.

• Register in-person at one of our recreation facilities (AFLC or SARC).

This is a confidential fee assistance program. Qualifying residents may receive up to $250 per person/per year.

Note: Portions of the SARC will be under construction this summer. As a result, you may encounter hoarding, noise and dust as you enter the building. This will not affect the safety of participants or the quality of our programs.

REGISTRATION FORMS

Please complete all of the required fields on your registration form to ensure that you are placed in the correct program.

REGISTRATIONS

We reserve the right to withdraw, postpone, cancel or combine classes, limit registration, or change instructors. Every effort is made to enroll you in your 1st program choice. Submission of a registration form does not guarantee acceptance in the requested program. The Community Services Department will send out confirmation of your enrollment for mailed registrations only. If you have not received the confirmation two days prior to the program start date, please call 905-841-7529 for verbal confirmation. All NSF cheques will be charged $55.50 (tax included) and will need to be replaced by cash or certified cheque.

CANCELLATIONS

If a program is cancelled, you will be notified by email or telephone. You may transfer to another program, free of charge (subject to availability), receive a full refund, or apply a credit to your account.

REFUNDS

All refund requests must be made IN WRITING. Please allow 2-3 weeks for all refunds to be processed. You can withdraw/transfer from a program using e-PLAY up to 14 days prior to the start of the program. For a withdrawal/transfer less than 14 days prior to the start of the program, please email rleisure@aurora.ca.

Non-Medical Refunds

Non-medical related refund requests for ALL PROGRAMS except Aquatic Leadership will only be accepted prior to the second regularly scheduled class. Visit the Aquatic Leadership webpage for refund information at www.aurora.ca/aquaticleadership.

7 Days or more prior to start of program. Full refund, no administration fee.

6 Days or less prior to start of program. Full refund, less the $24.25 administration fee.

After 1st class, before 2nd class. Prorated refund, less the $24.25 administration fee.

After start of 2nd class. No refund.

Refunds Due to Medical Issues

For all programs and aquatic leadership courses, there will be no administration fee for refunds due to medical reasons (proration still applies). Refunds/transfers will be processed according to the date your written request is received by our Department.

DROP-IN ACTIVITIES

A visit is defined as an activity within the scheduled drop-in time.

WAITING LISTS

If you cannot be accommodated in any of your selections, you are encouraged to add yourself to the waiting list for the program(s) of your choice. Every effort is made to accommodate program waitlists by either adding additional classes or transferring you into another available program, where possible.

TRANSFERS

Transfers for swimming lessons will only be accepted prior to the second regularly scheduled class. There will be no penalty for transferring. Transfers for general programs can take place at any time, subject to availability.

DISCOUNTS

When there are three or more children in the same family taking programs in the SAME PROGRAM AREA, the third and subsequent children will be charged half price. Discounts will be taken off the lower priced programs. For first time online registrations, the discount will be processed AFTER the registration and will be returned as a separate refund. This will happen automatically. For any subsequent online registrations within the SAME PROGRAM AREA, the discount will calculate automatically at time of checkout. In person registration discounts will be processed immediately. Registrations for all children must take place within the same transaction.

This does not apply to some of our Aquatic Leadership Programs, Private/Semi-Private Lessons, Special Events, or to Club Aurora Memberships or Specialty Programs.

SCHEDULES

Our best effort is made to provide you with the most accurate information at the time of printing, however, schedules are subject to change. We reserve the right to cancel, amend, change, postpone or combine classes/activities that are listed in this guide. For the most up to date activity schedule, please refer to your e-PLAY account.

SAFE ARRIVAL & DEPARTURE

Staff ask that parents/guardians walk their child(ren) into the program when dropping them off, and come into the room to pick them up. Please ensure the instructor is aware of your presence when you return to pick up your child. If your child is being picked up by someone else, please inform an instructor at the beginning of class.

PARTICIPANT BEHAVIOUR

We want to create an environment of trust, safety and fun! Disrespectful or aggressive behaviour is not acceptable. If inappropriate behaviour occurs, a participant’s actions may lead to their removal.

PHOTOGRAPHS/VIDEOS

Photographs/videos may be taken of your own family only. Permission to take photographs/videos must be granted by a Coordinator, Supervisor or program instructor prior to taking any photographs or videos. Additionally, some of our programs have a parent’s day where families can take photographs/videos (of their own family). Underwater photography is not permitted.

Sheila Murray was born and raised in England. Her father was Black Jamaican, and her mother, white English. Sheila’s short fiction has been published in many literary journals including Descant, The Dalhousie Review, and The New Quarterly.

Sheila has worked as a documentary filmmaker and television sound editor, and now leads a grassroots, volunteer-driven initiative that engages urban residents in adapting to local climate change impacts.

Materializing Immaterial

Samar Hejazi

Materializing Immaterial (working title) is solo exhibition of works by Samar Hejazi, an internationally exhibited visual artist living between Toronto and Dubai.

Hejazi brings the art of installation to the gallery. Suspending artworks in open air, Hejazi focuses on the constant transformable qualities of material by playing with light and shadow, vantage points, and shifting perceptions. The work, described by Hejazi, “create(s) a performance that make defining the limitations of boundaries between artwork and viewer imperceptible”.

Letters to the Earth: Between Despair and Hope A Group Exhibition curated by Carmel Brennan

This muti-disciplinary group exhibition serves to initiate conversation about the environmental crisis happening around the world and affecting Canadians directly. Artists across Canada and beyond wrote a letter to the earth as their commitment to this exhibition. They voice that the opportunity to sit back and blame corporations, governments, or the mistakes of our pasts has passed. To preserve the future for our current and future generations, the time to act is now.

Carmel Brennan, born in England, was educated at George Washington University (Washington D.C.), University of Toronto, and York University. She completed a master’s degree at the University of the Highlands and Islands (Scotland). A visual arts educator and environmental activist Carmel exhibits her artwork provincewide and opens her studio in Sunderland, Ontario, to visitors every year as part of the Uxbridge Studio Tour. In 2021, she curated The Conversation with the Aurora Cultural Centre.

Want to get happy? Learn to play the oh-so-hip ukulele! Come to this ground level introductory course – no musical theory required. This week campers will take their artistic inspiration from nature. From art projects about the deep blue sea, to plein air painting sessions, campers will learn how to see art in their everyday lives.

This week is all about fantasy, myths and legends. Campers will discover how to create cool art pieces based on unicorns, dragons, mermaids, monsters, and so much more! This whimsical week will be sure to ignite your child’s imagination!

Get your hands messy this week! Campers will design and create 3D pieces using items such as clay, model magic, and found objects. They will work with a variety of tools to discover unique properties of these unconventional mediums.

Art Around the Globe

Take a voyage of discovery around the globe to learn about how different artforms have been created around the world. Campers will gain insight into a variety of cultures this week.

OSTEO FITNESS

This class uses weight-bearing activities with light weight training to improve and maintain your bone density and fitness level.

AQUAFITNESS

Receive all the benefits of a floor aerobics class without the joint stress. Stay cool in the pool and cross-train with Aquafitness.

BOOMER ABC’S

This intermediate fitness class is for Baby Boomers (55+ years) who have been exercising regularly. The class includes muscle conditioning using free weights or body weight, abdominal and core strengthening, balance and stretching.

BOOT CAMP

This class will challenge you with a variety of conditioning exercises and drills to improve your strength, conditioning, agility and balance, as well as your overall fitness.

CARDIO DANCE

Get your groove on with Cardio Dance. This class offers a variety of dance styles and mini routines, that are easy to follow with lots of options. Work at your own intensity but most of all just have fun.

CARDIO SIZZLE & CHISEL

A combination class of cardio activities and muscle conditioning exercises that will put a sizzle in your workout and help improve your strength and definition.

CHISEL

A total body muscle conditioning class that will work your body from head to toe using a variety of equipment.

MUSCLE FUSION

A fun dynamic class that combines, strength, agility, balance and core exercises to improve your functional fitness.

P90X

This class is a training system which highlights the principle of “muscle confusion” and complex moves (combining muscle groups). Choreographed to music, moves are timed so that participants can do as many repetitions of the move as they are capable, working at their own pace with the fun of being in a group.

PIYO®

This is a unique class designed to build strength and gain flexibility. The moves fit perfectly together to form a class filled with intense choreography that’s fun, challenging and will make you sweat. It’s about energy, power and rhythm.

RIP

This barbell program is for men and women of all ages and all fitness levels. Matching movement to music and using traditional strength training allows participants to work at their own level.

SUNRISE YOGA

Start your day off right with a good stretch and a calm mind. Gradually warm the body and awaken the mind in this energizing class. Designed with Hatha Yoga principles, this class is suitable for all fitness levels. Sunrise Yoga will give you energy and focus to last throughout your day.

YOGA FITNESS

Yoga Fitness is a fitness inspired yoga program designed to improve health, performance and mental acuity. Based on the fusion of eastern traditional Hatha Yoga and western fitness science, this class blends balance, strength, flexibility and power in a fitness format.

YOGA FUSION

If you are feeling stressed or overwhelmed, and want to build mental strength and bring calmness to your day, start your morning with our Yoga Fusion class. F.I.T. CLUB Fun In Training

FITNESS INCLUSION SERVICES

Arthritis Aquafit: Club Aurora offers a 45-minute specialty class for people who suffer from arthritis. The objectives of these recreational exercises are to reduce pain, help maintain or increase joint mobility, and increase muscular strength and endurance.

Heart Wise Exercise: This initiative is intended to integrate the cardiac population into mainstream programs. This is done by addressing physical and psychological needs. It provides exercise options to help participants choose appropriate programs and levels of intensities, while encouraging participants to do daily physical activities.

Whether you’re new to meditation or a regular practitioner, this workshop is a great way to try something new. This workshop will focus on several different styles of meditation and mindfulness to learn the differences and the similarities between them, along with their various health benefits. Participants must provide their own eye protection and squash racquet.

WOMEN’S LEARN TO PLAY SQUASH Age: 18+ years • Level: Beginner • Location: AFLC Squash Courts 1, 2, 3, 4 This program is an introductory program that emphasizes the technical aspects of the game of squash in a fun, yet competitive environment. Taught by our female squash pro, the program is aimed at female participants who are new to the sport. Participants will be partnered with others of similar ability.

HOUSE LEAGUE Age: 14+ years • Levels: Beginner, Intermediate & Advanced • Location: AFLC Squash Courts 1, 2, 3, 4

This is a mixed team’s event, open to all levels of play. The level of play varies from advanced (Level 1) to beginner/intermediate (Level 5). Each player plays a 40-minute match per night for their team. Play begins as early as 5:40pm and ends at 9:40pm.

ROUND ROBIN Age: 14+ years • Levels: Beginner, Intermediate & Advanced • Location: AFLC Squash Courts 1, 2, 3, 4

A fun, social, non-competitive opportunity to play squash games with players at all levels. A great opportunity for players to work on their game, help others improve or just get in a great workout.

Lane Swim - For those wishing to utilize the pool for fitness and endurance. Participants are asked to swim continuously and in the lane appropriate to their speed.

Therapy Pool - Intended for swimmers of all ages to use the Therapy Pool only, but not exclusive to therapeutic purposes. Limited equipment may be provided at this time. Therapy Pool is only available at the SARC.

Silver Swimmers - This program is to provide Older Adult Swimmers (55 yrs+) an opportunity to use the pool in a comfortable self-paced atmosphere with other older adult swimmers. This is a chance to get into the water and swim, or exercise at your own pace.

GENERAL AQUATIC INFORMATION

BEFORE SWIMMING LESSONS START

The Town of Aurora Aquatics Team will be emailing session information prior to the first swim lesson. Please ensure your email is updated in e-PLAY to receive this information.

WHAT LEVEL SHOULD I REGISTER IN?

Visit our pool and one of the Aquatic Staff can assist you in determining what level to register in. The Aquatics division offers free swimming lesson assessments. Register for a time slot at www.aurora.ca/eplay.

MAKE-UP LESSONS

Occasionally lessons may be cancelled due to pool fouling, mechanical, or chemical problems. Makeup classes or credits due to participant’s illness or personal commitments will not be available. Where a pool may close in an untimely manner, the Town will attempt to accommodate the disruption where applicable (for example - move to a different pool at the SARC or complete dry land water safety activities). If over half of the class in unable to be completed satisfactorily a credit may be issued.

GENERAL POOL RULES

• Disposable and cloth diapers are not permitted in the water. Please use swim diapers designed for pool use.

• Individuals with a serious medical condition should be accompanied in the water with another individual knowledgeable of their condition and inform the lifeguard.

• Those infected with a communicable disease or having open sores on their body will not be admitted to the swimming pool.

• Please do not bring food and/or beverages onto pool decks or viewing galleries. Only water contained in plastic or nonbreakable containers is permissible.

POOL FOULING/CLOSURE

To reduce the number of closures due to pool fouling, participants not toilet trained are required to wear snug fitting plastic pants or swim diapers. Also, please keep eating to a minimum prior to swimming. Disposable swim diapers are carried at both the A.F.L.C. and S.A.R.C., and can be purchased at the reception desk.

PARENT’S DAY

Parent’s Day will take place during the 5th lesson. Classes will end 5 minutes early to give parents the opportunity to talk to their child’s instructor about their progress; please remember to remove your shoes. Please note that picture taking is only permitted on Picture Day.

PICTURE DAY

Picture Day will take place during the 6th lesson. Parents are invited on deck to watch their child’s swimming lesson and take pictures; please remember to remove your shoes. Please note that picture taking is only permitted on this day.

CELL PHONES, FILMING AND PHOTOGRAPHY

Please note that to ensure the privacy of others, the use of cell phone devices, filming or photography will not be permitted in the change rooms, viewing gallery or pool area during swimming programs or recreational swims.

STROLLERS, WHEELCHAIRS & ASSISTIVE MOBILITY DEVICES

Strollers are not permitted on the pool deck. Wheelchairs and assistive mobility devices (for example - walkers) are permitted, however the wheels must be cleaned prior to entering the pool area. Water wheelchairs are provided in the change rooms.

CHANGE ROOM POLICIES

• Children 7 years of age and older are encouraged to use the change room designated for their gender.

• Mixed gender families, unaccompanied children and persons with identified special needs and their caregivers are encouraged to use the family change room.

We ask that all patrons cooperate in making the change room experience comfortable for everyone. Please do not leave clothing or other belongings in the change stalls during your time in the pool.

LEARN TO SWIM

PARENT & TOT 1

Age: 4 to 12 months

The in-water interaction between parent and child is designed to stress the importance of play in developing water-positive attitudes and skills. This class is designed for the 4 to 12 month old to learn to enjoy the water with the parent and is based on each child’s development. These activities and progressions are based on child development and we recommend parents register in the level appropriate to for their child’s age. Note: 1 guardian per child.

Preschoolers will have fun learning to get in and out of the water. We’ll help them jump into chest deep water. They’ll float and glide on their front and back, and learn to get their face wet and blow bubbles underwater.

Age: 3 to 5 years

Preschoolers learn to jump into chest deep water by themselves, and get in and get out wearing a lifejacket. They’ll submerge and exhale underwater. While wearing a lifejacket they’ll glide on their front and back.

Age: 3 to 5 years

Preschoolers will try both jumping and a sideways entry into deep water while wearing a lifejacket. They’ll recover objects from the bottom in waist-deep water. They’ll work on kicking and gliding through the water on their front and back.

PRESCHOOL 4

Age: 3 to 5 years

Preschoolers will learn to do solo jumps into deeper water and get out by themselves. They’ll do sideways entries and open their eyes underwater. They’ll master a short (5 m) swim on their front wearing a lifejacket and gliding and kicking on their side.

Prerequisite: Preschool 3 or equivalent.

PRESCHOOL 5

Age: 3 to 5 years

These youngsters get more adventuresome with a forward roll entry wearing a lifejacket and treading water for 10 sec. They’ll work on front and back crawl swims for 5 m, interval training and get a giggle out of whip kick.

SWIMMER 1

Age: 6 to 12 years

Swimmers will become comfortable jumping into water with and without a lifejacket. They’ll learn to open their eyes, exhale and hold their breath underwater. They’ll work on floats, glides and kicking through the water on their front and back.

SWIMMER 2

Age: 6 to 12 years

Swimmers will jump into deeper water, and learn to be comfortable falling sideways into the water wearing a lifejacket. They’ll be able to support themselves at the surface without an aid, learn whip kick, swim 10 m on their front and back, and be introduced to flutter kick interval training (4 x 5 m).

Prerequisite: Preschool 5, Swimmer 1 or equivalent.

SWIMMER 3

Age: 6 to 12 years

Swimmers will dive, do in-water front somersaults, and handstands. They’ll work on 15 m of front crawl, back crawl and 10 m of whip kick. Flutter kick interval training increases to 4 x 15 m.

Prerequisite: Swimmer 2 or equivalent.

LEARN TO SWIM

SWIMMER 4

Age: 6 to 12 years

Swimmers will swim 5 m underwater and lengths of front, back crawl, whip kick, and breaststroke arms with breathing. Their new bag of tricks includes the completion of the Canadian Swim to Survive® Standard. They’ll cap it all off with front crawl sprints over 25 m and 4 x 25 m front or back crawl interval training.

Prerequisite: Swimmer 3 or equivalent.

DIVING – AURORA FAMILY LEISURE COMPLEX

Please note that due to the depth of the pool at the AFLC, any diving components will not be included in the program. This will not affect the outcome of the participant’s ability to complete a swimming level.

SWIMMER 5

Age: 6 to 12 years

Swimmers will master shallow dives, cannonball entries, eggbeater kicks, and in-water backward somersaults. They’ll refine their front and back crawl over 50 m swims of each, and breaststroke over 25 m. Then they’ll pick up the pace in 25 m sprints and two interval training bouts: 4 x 50 m front or back crawl; and 4 x 15 m breaststroke. Prerequisite: Swimmer 4 or equivalent.

SWIMMER 6

Age: 6 to 12 years

Swimmers will rise to the challenge of sophisticated aquatic skills including stride entries, compact jumps and lifesaving kicks like eggbeater and scissor kick. They’ll develop strength and power in head-up breaststroke sprints over 25 m. They’ll easily swim lengths of front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke, and they’ll complete the 300 m workout.

Prerequisite: Swimmer 5 or equivalent.

SPECIALTY – FAMILY SWIM LESSONS

Age: 3 to 12 years

Register for this time slot rather than a particular level. A real time saver for large families. Suitable for: Preschool 1 to 5 and Swimmer 1 to 6. Multiple levels may be combined into a class. Class sizes will vary. A maximum of 4 swimmers per class.

SWIMMER 7 – ROOKIE PATROL

Age: 6 to 12 years

Swimmers continue stroke development with 50 m swims of front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke. Lifesaving sport skills include a 25 m obstacle swim and 15 m object carry. First aid focuses on assessment of conscious victims, contacting EMS, and treatment for bleeding. Fitness improves in 350 m workouts and 100 m timed swims.

LEARN TO SWIM

SWIMMER 8 – RANGER PATROL

Age: 6 to 12 years

Swimmers develop better strokes over 75 m swims of each stroke. They tackle lifesaving sport skills in a lifesaving medley, timed object support and rescue with a buoyant aid. First aid focuses on assessment of unconscious victims, treatment of victims in shock and obstructed airway procedures. Skill drills develop a strong lifesaving foundation.

Prerequisite: Swimmer 7 – Rookie Patrol.

FITNESS SWIMMER

Age: 10 to 16 years

Geared towards swimmers 10 to 16 years of age who want to improve their overall physical fitness in the water. Fitness Swimmer provides a structured approach based on accepted training principles and practices including interval training, sprints, and distance swims. Candidates set their own goals to improve overall physical fitness. Prerequisite: Swimmer 6, Teen 3, or equivalent.

Age: 10 to 13 years

The course will prepare young candidates to be ready for Bronze Medallion. It will focus on lifesaving skills and fitness as well as decision-making and how to take charge in an emergency. Note: Swimmer 9 – Star Patrol recommended.

SWIMMER 9 – STAR PATROL

Age: 6 to 12 years

Swimmers are challenged with 600 m workouts, 300 m timed swims and a 25 m object carry. Strokes are refined over 100 m swims. First aid focuses on treatment of bone or joint injuries and respiratory emergencies including asthma and allergic reactions. Lifesaving skills include defence methods, victim removals and rolling over and supporting a victim face up in shallow water.

The Aurora Lifesaving Club (ALC) is a Town based lifesaving club that engages youth in physical activity and participation in lifesaving sport. This club-based program focuses on keeping youth active in the community and building a sense of belonging while learning lifesaving sport skills. ALC members will develop lifesaving skills, and engage in active living through participation in regional and provincial competitions. The perfect youth training program for future lifeguards.

Participants will learn to hit the ball from the tee, catch, throw, run the bases and other skills to help them become little baseball players. Your little slugger will build friendships, make memories and gain confidence for a great start to playing baseball. Parent/Guardian must remain in the program space for the entirety of the program.

MINI HOOPS

Age: 4 to 6 years

Location: AFLC

This class is a great introduction to the basics of basketball while encouraging teamwork and cooperation. This program will introduce your child to basic skills such as shooting, dribbling and passing while focusing mainly on the fun of the game. Parent/Guardian must remain in the program space for the entirety of the program.

KINDY CLUB

Age: 3 to 5 years

Location: SARC

Children will learn socialization, independence and creative skills through play and hands-on activities. The day will begin with circle activities, followed by child-guided activity stations. Your child will need to have a nutritious snack each day, as well as indoor play shoes. Your child must be fully toilet trained. Staff will email registered participants to confirm orientation details.

Age: 1 to 3 years

This class emphasizes exploration, expression and imagination. Your child will develop body awareness, musicality, balance and coordination. There will be 30 minutes of skill development/team concepts, followed by 30 minutes of game play with older female athletes (such as coaches and officials), providing positive role modeling for the younger participants. Note: This is for GIRLS ONLY and no experience is necessary. We are proud to play like girls!

KIDS GREAT MINDS – PC INTERACTIVE GAME CREATION

Children will learn a visual programming language that allows them to create and play their own video games on a PC using a simple language and entirely icon-based interface. They will learn advanced game design concepts in a simple, direct and intuitive manner. There are 20 different characters with different abilities, along with multiplayer and multi-level options. This intelligent screen time is an excellent opportunity to introduce kids to computer programming.

KIDS GREAT MINDS – VIRTUAL REALITY CHARACTER DESIGN

This camp is for every child interested in 3D Character Design and Virtual Reality (VR). Campers will learn how to create industry level, high resolution and textured 3D characters from their favourite movies and video games. These characters will later be added to their own personalized environments that can be used in animations, video games and seen with VR devices. KGM will bring in the VR goggles so campers can enjoy their amazing work.

In this introductory STEM program, kids will explore a variety of topics and learn about the wonders of both life and physical sciences. They will explore themes and answer questions, such as “What makes your hair stand up?”, “Is it a magnet or magic?”, and “Just what are carbs anyway?”.

RUNNING CLUB

This community-based running club is for children who want to learn new skills and have fun running with others. It is a non-competitive program. All fitness levels are welcome. Simply do your best and compete against your own time. Learn to build endurance, practice proper running form, pacing, injury prevention and nutrition. Each week you will meet at the AFLC Lobby: we will be running on trails at Lambert Willson Park.

It’s important for kids to keep up their math skills during the summer so they’re ready for new material in the fall. Summer at Mathnasium allows them to do this right alongside their other summer activities, with flexible hours and both in-centre and online learning. And we make it fun!

Level 1: For players with no playing experience. The emphasis is on fun, friendship, and development of fundamental skills.

Level 2: For players with some playing experience, but still lack consistency. Development of technique will be emphasized through drills and games in a fun and friendly atmosphere.

Level 3: For players with knowledge of basic fundamentals, can place shots with moderate success and can sustain a baseline rally.

Level 4: For experienced players. This program will cover advanced techniques for spins, speed as well as tactical emphasis.

ADULT LESSONS

Adult – Age: 18+ years

Level 1.0-1.5: For players with no tennis experience. The lessons will provide an introduction to stroke fundamentals, rules and scoring.

Level 1.5-2.0: For players who have had a basic introduction to tennis, but still need to focus on the fundamentals.

Level 2.0-2.5: For players with some tennis experience. Emphasis will be on improving consistency and technique.

Level 2.5-3.0: For players who know the fundamentals of all strokes and can maintain a consistent rally at a moderate pace.

Level 3.0-3.5: For players who can rally from the baseline at a slow to moderate speed with some consistency. Emphasis will be on improving directional control and changes in speed.

Level 4.0-4.5: For players who are confident with their groundstrokes. They are looking to improve spin/speed on their groundstrokes, as well as improve their serve and net game.

Upon request, the Town of Aurora will do their best to arrange a 1:1 support staff for a participant based on availability and resources. In most cases, 1:1 support can be arranged, however, we ask families to provide at least two weeks notice prior to the start of a program to allow for adequate time to confirm a staff member.

Depending on individual ability, some may require parent/guardian participation from home to participate.

MOVE-ABILITY

It’s time for a dance party! In this adapted program, participants of all abilities will engage in a variety of movement activities that promote physical literacy, rhythm, and coordination. Participants will partake in an engaging warm-up, sing-alongs, and interactive movement songs. This program is offered at a 1:3 staff to participant ratio. Parent/ guardians are encouraged to attend to support participants.

PLAY-ABILITY KIDS

This motivational, non-competitive running club is for youth who want to learn new skills and have fun running with others. All fitness levels are welcome. Learn to build endurance, practice proper running form, pacing, injury prevention and nutrition. Each week participants will meet in the AFLC Lobby and run on the trails in Lambert Willson Park.

YOUTH PICKLEBALL – LEARN TO PLAY

Age: 10 to 17 years

Youth will learn pickleball basics and be able to play with more confidence at the end of this introductory learn to play program. Coaches will cover the fundamentals of serve, return and volley. This program is offered by Elevation Athletics Association. All abilities and skill levels welcome. Paddles will be provided for players that do not have their own.

KNITTING: LEARN TO KNIT – PART 1

Age: 55+ years

Location: ASC

A simple knit square or rectangle can become a button cowl, fingerless gloves or hat. In this class, you will learn several necessary basic skills to get started knitting: understanding yarn and gauge, casting on, knit and purl stitches, button holes, casting off, seaming. These skills will be practised while knitting three small projects –a dishcloth, fingerless mitts and a cowl. Participants need no prior experience knitting.

Note: There is a $25 fee payable to the instructor at the first class for supplies. This fee covers needles and yarn suitable for the three class projects.

In this class you will learn various techniques (increases, decreases, seaming, bias knitting, reading charts) and stitches (cables, lace, slip stitches, ribs, knit and purl combos) which will enable you to go on and create your own designs. For each new stitch or technique, you will also be given a pattern for a simple project you can knit using that new skill. This class is suitable for the advanced beginner. It would be an excellent follow-up to the Learn to Knit class. Please pick-up a supply list at the Seniors Centre and bring all supplies to the first class.

KNITTING: SPRING SHAWL

Shawls rose to the top of every knitter’s to-do list about 15 years ago and remain one of the most popular knitting projects. Age of Brass and Steam is a beginner friendly formula style design which allows you to be creative with your own colours, yarn weight/type and size. This design is a gentle introduction to knitting triangular shaped shawls that requires only basic knitting skills. Please pick-up a supply list at the Seniors Centre and bring all supplies to the first class.

pFIT is a social and safe way to increase lower body strength, improve range of motion and maintain balance. The stepper allows each leg to work at its own pace and resistance level.

This class is for the true beginner. It is never too late to learn and enjoy the practice of yoga. You will be introduced to a series of stretches, poses and breathing techniques. PARKS & TRAILS

PEDESTRIAN TRAIL SYSTEM

The Town of Aurora is fortunate to have an extensive pedestrian trail system which connects many of its neighbourhood parks, Town facilities and open space corridors. Presently the Town maintains approximately 62 kilometers of trails.

Come out and enjoy a leisurely hike through the natural valley land setting of mixed forests, meadows and wetland habitats of the Holland River Valley. This is Aurora’s longest trail corridor stretching from Evans Park on Bayview Avenue south of Vandorf Sideroad all the way up to St. John’s Sideroad and includes the Tim Jones Trail (Nokiidaa Trail), the Klaus Wehrenberg Trail as well as the Sheppard’s Bush trails. These trails link municipal facilities such as the Town Hall, the Senior’s Centre and the Aurora Family Leisure Complex, as well as the Aurora Community Centre, Sheppard’s Bush, and Lambert Willson Park.

Other significant trails include the Lakeview/Willow Farm Trail located within the forested hills of St. Andrews in northwest Aurora, the David Tomlinson Nature Reserve Trail in the Marsh Creek valley lands of northeast Aurora, and currently under construction, the Highland Gate trail in the former Highland Gates Golf Course lands.

All Aurora trails are considered multi-use, with the primary focus being pedestrian hikers. Opportunities also exist for cross country skiers. The majority of our trails are compact gravel surfaces with some asphalt sections through neighbourhood and community parks. Please note that our trails are not groomed or maintained during winter months, and conditions vary widely. Surface conditions can change dramatically during the winter to create potentially hazardous hiking and skiing conditions. All users are advised to respect other trail users, to stay on designated trails and to exercise caution at all times.

COMMUNITY PARKS & SPORTS FACILITIES

The town currently has over 75 parks and open space areas including 44 playgrounds encompassing over 700 acres, 4 children’s water-play splash pads, 35 soccer fields, 18 ball diamonds and a wide variety of other recreational activities. DAVID TOMLINSON NATURE RESERVE

The David Tomlinson Nature Reserve consists of marshland, openwater ponds, meadows and forests in the Marsh Creek valley lands located between Bayview Avenue and Leslie Street, north of Wellington Street East. Main access points include the Stronach Aurora Recreation Centre and Johnathan Bales Parkette.

Park users should note that much of the nature reserve contains environmentally sensitive areas and habitat for many species of flora and fauna, and the intent is to restrict pedestrian access to these areas to allow nature to flourish. We request that park users stay on the trails and respect the truly unique features that are contained within the nature reserve. Viewing platforms have been provided at two

critical locations and have been designed to screen pedestrians from wildlife that would otherwise be startled should pedestrians remain in plain view. Additional native trees and shrubs will be planted over the next few years to help buffer pedestrian activity from environmentally sensitive areas.
