Summer Fun For Everyone NST Residents Enjoy Golf, Tennis, Gym, Aerobics and Pools

A

s the summer of 2015 approaches Labor Day, North Shore Towers Country Club members are still enjoying a variety of seasonal activities, including golf, tennis, indoor and outdoor pools, a well-equiped gym and aerobics classes.

The Men’s Golf Association is heading towards the close of their season after a fierce winter that took a heavy toll on the golf course, as well as high temperatures in July and August.

“It’s been a great season with great participation, and we are very happy about that,” Towers Men’s Golf Association President Herb Greenberg said.

The men’s club has 173 golfers this year, featuring 107 residents and 66 sponsored members. Activities and events are available for every level of golfer, from low handicaps to high. In addition, there is also a new Wednesday group for those more advanced in age, which also serves as a way for those members to meet new people.

“We are especially proud of our Wednesday group, the Nine-Hole Knights,” Greenberg said. “It has turned into a huge success and we’re very proud of that.”

Club championship finals concluded in mid August, and a Labor Day weekend fundraiser for prostate cancer is being planned. The season will conclude with the annual closing breakfast and dinner.

Highlights of this year include the continuing renovation of the beautifully landscaped, 112-acre, 18-hole championship course golf club, Greenberg said. This includes a new irrigation system that saves labor and water, Continued on Page 7

heresa Oropallo, in her first year as President of The TLGA (Towers Ladies Golf Association), is a five-year resident of North Shore Towers who admits she had not really played the game until she moved here. She is now dedicated to golf and “absolutely loves the game,”she said. This retired educator, whose last position was as principal of Northport High School, is happy to share her enthusiasm about golf and especially the wonderful people she has met through the sport and now counts as friends.

Sitting on the VIP room terrace on a breezy late afternoon recently and looking out at the lovely manicured course, she remarked that the North Shore Towers golf

facility is probably the most beautiful and well-maintained one around. Guests frequently comment on the grounds and what a joy it is to play here.

The ladies golf program features tournaments every Tuesday, starting in May and continuing through the end of September. On May 12th of this year there was an opening breakfast for all members, and the closing day will be September 29th. Some years, early spring weather enabled the start of the season in mid-March and a late autumn saw people out on the course in mid-December.

Golf membership in the TLGA for Towers residents is about $4,000 with $120 more for league association dues. This includes the opening breakfast, lunch after some tournaments, the closing dinner, trophies and prizes.

3rd Annual NST Short Film Festival

By Marilyn Chris It is that time of year again. Summer is almost over and Fall can’t be far behind.

The Short Film Festival is gearing up for what looks like a splendid two evenings of new and exciting short films for the residents of North Shore Towers.

The committee: Dr. Robert Eagle, Marilyn Eagle, Lee Wallace, Marilyn Chris and Board member Fred Chernow have been screening short films for quite some time for this year’s crop. They have come up with some extraordinary choices.

The first evening, September 29th at 7:30 pm in the beautifully refurbished Towers Cinema, will consist of: “Water Dogs,” “My Name is Oscar,” “Tobacco Burn,” “OMG,” and “It Happened in Havanna, a Yiddish Love Story.” All wonderful tales from as far

away as Canada and as near as Long Island.

The second evening, October 8th at 7:30 pm will bring “On a Technicality,” “Time 2 Split,” “A Mighty Nice Man,” “Boy and the Bus,” “Roughstock” and “Seraglio.” Each very different. A great buffet of fascinating films from as far away as the U.K. and Paris, France and Cleveland, Ohio and as near as the American South.

The Festival has been a favorite here for the past two years (we had a retrospective that was inordinately popular) and is a most eagerly anticipated event. We hope everyone will join in at the Question and Answer sessions that follow each presentation and ask questions of the filmmakers and learn some inside tidbits about these wonderful and interesting short films.

Tuesdays With REAP REAP (Retired, Energetic, Active People) meets every Tuesday at Cumberland School, 30 Cumberland Ave., at Great Neck’s Adult Ed Center. At 9:00 am the first Tuesday of each month is our board meeting. The business meeting starts about 10:30 am. “My Opinion” will be presented by Alyce Drabkin. The speaker on September 1st will be Bud Livingston, who will discuss “New York City and the Civil War.” There will be a break at 11:45 am for lunch. Please join us and bring a brown bag lunch. Current Events roundtable discussion begins at 12:30 pm and will be led by Marvin Silverman. Refreshments, coffee and tea will be served. Science Club meets at 1:00 pm.

Tennis Everyone? NSTA Pres. Leo Tujak

eo Tujak, President of the North Shore Towers Tennis Association, spoke enthusiastically about the place of tennis in the offerings at the Country Club. Tujak explained that the association has hosted a number of events in a season that started in May and will run through October. Tournaments were held on Sundays during Memorial Day and July Fourth weekends, and another will be held over Labor Day. Matches are set up by Tennis Pro Rick Bates, who arranges the competitions and the varying scoring rules.

Membership in the association has reached 80, more than in previous seasons, and this year there are more new players as well as more new women players. Tennis Association dues are $75 per person, paid to the North Shore Towers Country Club. Members can play every day, as well as in the evening when the courts are lighted. A free clinic with instruction by Bates is available every Monday morning from 8:00 am to 8:30 am.

The attractive courts are very well maintained and a wonderful amenity to the community. In a continuing effort to increase membership, an ad was placed in both the New York and Long Island editions of Tennis Magazine.

In addition, Tennis Magazine also ran a great article on the USTA matches that were played at NST. Also Groupon featured an offering of court time and a one or two-hour lesson at discounted rates. Over 15 people responded to the Groupon offer.

The fee for non-residents of the Towers, who must be sponsored by resident members, is $1,750 dues plus $75 association fee per year. This entitles those non-residents who join to all the amenities of the Country Club. This fee appears to be one of the least expensive in the Long Island area.

Tujak said that the Tennis Association would like to see more young people added to the membership as some in the Towers community mature and active play becomes more difficult for them, although he has great admiration for several 90-plus members who still play the game.

For those who perhaps are thinking of joining, there is open play available, and he invites people to come down and give the game a try with no obligation.

Tujak has boundless praise for the helpful staff of the Country Club, including Mary Anne, Allison and Ceci.

Every Saturday and Sunday morning coffee and bagels are available at the court, and staff is always there to help.

The Tennis Association is very grateful for the support, generosity and positive attitude of country club personnel.

One of the traditional Tennis Association events is a Pot-Luck dinner in the VIP room, which raises money for the American Cancer Society, and where members provide dinner entrees for tables of eight, as well as making a financial contribution. Member Sid Binstock is a featured chef/entertainer and gives instruction in food preparation combined with wit and humor.

On June 17th, the Tennis Association held a pizza party in the men’s card room of the Country Cub. A large turnout enjoyed the food and companionship. The pizza party was paid for by the association.

In August there will be a charity breakfast in the gazebo at the tennis courts. A donation of $17 per person will benefit the Hempstead Food Kitchen. This is arranged by Binstock, who regularly volunteers at the Food Kitchen.

A closing dinner on Sept. 17th, partially subsidized by the Tennis Association, will celebrate this year’s season at the Westbury Manor restaurant, where gifts related to the game of tennis are traditionally distributed to members.

Greenberg has served for three years as president of the Men’s Golf Association, and previously as First Vice

President. He has been a Building Two resident for 12 years, and is a working partner at the Crown Ford dealership in Lynbrook, Long Island for over 50 years. He and his wife, Blossom, spend their winters in Palm Springs.

New Golfer is Ladies Club President the five boroughs, appropriate decorations in the VIP room and contests among the various teams. It has always been a lively day for all participants.

A new and very important event this year was the “Babes Against Cancer Land on the Green Contest,” held on Saturday, August 22nd. It was an all-day program that North Shore Towers participated in for the first time this season. The Country Club provided the use of the Towers course for foursomes, and 12 outstanding Long Island golf clubs were involved. All entry fees will be donated to the American Cancer Society, and some fabulous prizes will be awarded to the winners, such as resort stays in Costa Rica and Puerto Rico and Long Island Golf Around days at various clubs.

Golf Pro Bob Guido and his assistant John are essential to the success of the golf programs at North Shore and always available to advise and instruct. Free clinics for Towers residents who are not golf club members have

been offered to introduce people to the game. Guido had 16 women attend a clinic recently. Mondays, when the golf course is officially closed, there are sometimes outings by outside organizations that pay fees for their members or employees to enjoy our facilities. This has always been of benefit to North Shore Towers, both for financial reasons and to publicize our beautiful community.

The executive board consists of the chairs of the various committees: Babes event, handicap, member-guest, social, rules and regulations, and publicity.

The spirit and activities of the TLGA enliven and enhance the entire North Shore Towers Community. It is exciting to see these vigorous, enthusiastic women gracing the verdant golf course on our beautiful grounds and a sincere welcome is always extended to new members.

The course is open from 8:00 am to sunset. Oropallo has instituted Thursday evening golf nights to accommodate members who are not available to play earlier in the day.

This has become very popular. It starts around 4:00 pm, members play nine holes, and meet afterward in the men’s card room for pizza and socialization. About 15-25 people have been playing and the numbers are growing. Oropallo ‘s goal is to expand the program, begin at 5:00 pm or later, and maybe start a co-ed golf group. On some major holidays, such as Memorial Day and July 4th, there are already co-ed golf activities.

Major events in the TLGA calendar include the opening breakfast and the Member-Guest Day on August 6th, where each league member can invite up to three guests. This program always has a theme, and this year’s is New York City, with players wearing different colors representing

John Kotter, Harvard Business School professor, writes the following about leadership: “Good leaders establish the vision for the future and set the strategy for getting there.” Redlich is one of those special leaders, as evidenced by his building a multi-million dollar business, and as Chairman of the Board of the Pennsylvania Manufacturers Association.

He is also a member of the National Manufacturers Association in Washington DC, and was choseen as one of 40 industrialists that met with President Bush regarding the international trade powers that the President was seeking from Congress. In addition, he was on the Board of his Temple, chairing the Pulpit, Finance, Capital Improvement and Investment Committees.

Redlich’s managerial experiences in business, banking and finance, are welcome talents for a Director to have, along with with his warm smile and winning personality. “But, most important,” he said, “Is my financial expertise. The NST residents have empowered me to help preserve our financial viability for today and for the long-term to keep us healthy.”

As a board member, he now serves as the co-op’s Treasurer, and on the Finance Committee and Chairman of the Budget Committee. He has the experience and the commitment to bring his strong leadership skills to our board of directors and to be a productive and memorable director for many years to come.

Iris & Michael Hoffman: Long-Time Residents

J

ust about everyone knows Iris and Michael Hoffman–certainly the “lobby crowd” in Building One. Especially when they pause to let residents pet their English Toy Spaniel. This attractive couple has lived here since 1975. Their story involves rescue dogs, racehorses, rare shells, rocks, minerals and other collectibles– what’s not to like?

Where did you grow up, Iris?

I was born in the Bronx and attended the Woodmere Academy on Long Island. I attended the University of Miami and earned a degree at Hofstra University, then got a dual Masters at Adelphi University. I became an elementary school teacher in Massapequa. Years later I changed direction and became the American sales manager for a Japanese freight forwarder that was the largest in the world.

Fred Chernow Michael, where did you grow up?

I was born and raised in the Bronx, where my parents were friends with the Sperbers, Iris’ parents. After attending PS 82 and PS 26 and Taft High School, I went to the University of Miami (before Iris) earning a BA degree. I then attended Columbia University and went on to medical school at the University of Bologna in Italy, but changed my mind about becoming a doctor. I spent a few years traveling Europe before returning home.

What came next?

My father and his family were partners in M. Hoffman & Sons Jewelers for three generations, with stores on Fordham Road, Tremont Avenue, the corner of Prospect and Westchester Avenues. I considered joining the family business when I returned to New York. Instead, I went to Iona College, earned an MBA and became a CPA. In 1981 I became a sole practitioner accountant starting out on my kitchen table.

How did the two of you meet?

Michael was friends with Ken Sperber, Iris’ brother, and both families spent time together. After dating for some time Iris and Michael moved in together into a brand new rental complex called North Shore Towers. After 10 years together they decided it was time to get married. The building was converting from a rental to a co-op and they bought Apartment 12 W, where they have lived ever since.

Were there many dogs in NST at that time?

Yes, there actually were six dog runs. We felt it was more humane to adopt a dog that might otherwise be destroyed. We had several through the years, all poodles. After our last poodle died we thought we would adopt again. Saying good-bye to a family pet was so hard to do. One night we were watching News One and they had a story about a “House of Horrors” somewhere in Suffolk County. Some mentally ill person had kept dozens of dogs and cats in squalor. We saw one little puppy being carried out by our vet to be taken to a shelter. There was something special about this emaciated, neglected puppy Continued on Page 23

Remember, working out is to help strengthen you, not hurt you. Know your limits–your body will tell you. Start out slowly and use light weights and resistance and work your way up. This takes time, so don’t rush. Every time you work out you will feel more confident. Work on a level that you are comfortable with before moving to the next level. If you develop a schedule and follow it, you will be pleasantly surprised to see progress.

All you need is a smile, sneakers, and determination, so go for it!

ari Heiman, one of our expert trainers, conducted an orientation in the gym on Saturday, July 18th. The group learned about various pieces of equipment that are available and the correct way to use them. All equipment is good for strengthening; many target specific areas of the body.

Phyllis Goldstein And of course, the aerobic section, treadmills, elliptical, and bikes, which all help to increase your heart rate.

The back of the gym houses free weights, additional strength-training machines and, very important, stretching tables. Cari stressed that one should learn to use machines correctly and for your level of fitness. You can do this by working with a trainer privately (for a fee) or going down to the gym and asking the desk person to show you how to set up a machine for your individual use.

Cari also took the group to the spin room. There are 10 bikes, nine for participants and one for the instructor. She explained that on a spin bike only the front wheel moves (the flywheel), and the resistance can be controlled by the red knob while riding.

The last area that was visited was the Pilates reformer room. Here there are four machines for student use. The instructor directs the students while standing. Check the schedule for these two classes. The reformer, since the capacity is so limited, has to be registered for on Thursday at 5:00 pm for the following week. The schedule delineates the times.

Library News: Not A Fairy Tale Our library depends upon the honor system. However, not everyone who is a resident of North Shore Towers is honorable. All our biographies of FDR, Eleanor, and Truman are gone. Someone stole them, loaded two bags, and evaded our video surveillance system. If you know who this person is, please tell a committee member.

The following rules contribute to the success of the library: If you have more than five books to donate, call management and they will inform our committee. We will

then come to your apartment and decide what we can use. No torn, dusty, stained or yellowed pages will be accepted. Nor do we accept medical, textbooks, cookbooks, etc. When returning books, put them on the metal cart, not on the table. Do not put them on the shelves. You may take two books at a time.

It is unfortunate that this report ends on a note of disappointment. Please help us keep our beautiful library something to be proud of. Empty shelves are not.

Migdal/Hadassah Luncheon To Benefit Stem Cell Research The Migdal Chapter of Hadassah at North Shore Towers will host a gala luncheon at Jonathan’s Restaurant, 2499 Jericho Turnpike in New Hyde Park, on Thursday, September 10th at 12:30 pm.

Proceeds will benefit Hadassah’s Stem Cell Research Program.

Lois Morton, an acclaimed, awardwinning singer and songwriter, will be the luncheon entertainer. Morton is known to metropolitan area audiences for her humorous songs and social commentary.

Her program will include “Songs from the Heart” and “Original Reflections on the Meshigas of Today.”

Facts of Life at NST Just heard that the temperature today maintenance men (plumbing, electrical is expected to go well over the 90s and I etc.) who are available 24 hours every day; am thinking how truly lucky I am to live the people who work in security and in the guardhouse who keep me safe; here. I do not have to go outside our wonderful doormen (there is to shop (there is plenty of food in always someone on duty 24 hours the stores in the arcade); I do not a day): our building concierges have to cook (there are restaurants who are always there to answer I can eat in downstairs); I can get questions and keep an eye out for my hair done, even get a massage us and the numerous other people at Pouran; I can get medicine behind the scenes. downstairs in the drug store Pat Tulchin (hopefully, I do not need it); and No, the heat has not gotten to me–I am so many other services are available to just grateful and determined that, this week me–Thank you to everyone–employers especially, I am going to thank every worker I see in the building. Pages From Our Past SEPTEMBER 2006 Remembering 9/11 Blossom Stone looked out her Building Three dining room window at North Shore Towers, shocked to see an inferno engulfing the first World Trade Center tower on September 11, 2001. “I was looking at the golf course just to see what kind of day it was, and out of the corner of my eye I caught a big red blob,” she vividly recalled five years after that tragic day.

Half a decade after that fateful day, residents remember what it was like at NST after the attacks. The board and management immediately implemented a maximumsecurity plan, and joined shareholders in a drive to help aid the victims and rescue workers.

Concert Pops Concert Ends Summer Dean Karahalis and the Concert Pops of Long Island closed out the summer at NST, with a concert in the Towers Cinema, Saturday, September 2nd. The show was followed by an extravagant Viennese hour.

NST In The Lead With Defibrillators External defibrillators are being provided by a growing number of public buildings, such as offices, shopping malls, gyms and airlines, but very few co-ops and condominiums. North Shore Towers, however, is leading the way, with five state-of the-art defibrillators. One is located in each lobby concierge desk, one in the security office, and one at the Country Club front desk, according to General Manager Glen Kotowski. Two older units are even

available on the golf course, and most Country Club employees are trained in their use.

7th Annual NST Art Show The 7th annual North Shore Towers Art and Artisans Show filled the Towers on the Green “Gallery” with about 700 art lovers viewing the work of residents, staff, and their children, Sunday, August 20th. New to this year’s exhibition was artist and sculptor Jodie Ranzer, whose mother Marilyn Ranzer works as a Dental Hygienist for Dr. Borenstein in the Arcade. Her work consisted of representations of living organisms, based on cancer cells. “I started sculpturing with wire and grape vines, and I needed depth for the pieces and the medium to hold the paint, so I added acrylic and plastic,” she explained.

Olmert Returns Dr. Yossi Olmert returned to the Towers, discussing the importance of the American Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), Sunday, August 27th at the Towers on the Green. This is the group The New York Times called, “The most important organization affecting America’s relationship with Israel.” Its primary mission is to lobby about legislation that strengthens the relationship between the two countries.

that reached out to us. We contacted the vet and followed up on the dog’s placement. The shelter was glad to give us Minnie (the name we gave her because she was so tiny, so minimal) after we spent a week “socializing” her. That’s Minnie’s picture as she is now and also standing at attention in Iris’s arms at a 911 Memorial event at the flag pole.

How did you become interested in racehorses?

We were frequent visitors to Belmont Race Track and often dined in the exclusive Trustee’s Dining Room as guests of friends. We met some serious horse owners there and became enamored of “Ziggy Moondust,” a New York-bred thoroughbred, and joined the partnership.

We then joined another partnership with “Handsome Alex,” a descendant of the fabled Afleet Alex. Handsome Alex is still training in Ocala, Florida, but who knows, maybe a future Kentucky Derby winner?

Do you go South in the winter months?

Twenty years ago we visited Sanibel Island on the west coast of Florida and have gone back every year since. We bought a beach cottage 50 yards from the Gulf of Mexico. Sanibel is the shelling capital of the world and we became serious collectors along with the many who vacation there.

Do you collect anything else?

We collect everything that doesn’t move away fast

enough: prints and lithographs., collector plates, rocks and minerals.

While traveling through Nova Scotia we met up with folks who search for and collect rocks and minerals. So we became “rock hounds” and went far and wide to add to our collection. While in Herkimer County, New York we became fascinated with Herkimer diamonds. Named for this area, they are not really diamonds but the finest quartz crystals. We’ve learned how to find them in their natural state both on the matrix and loose on the ground.

Every day is an adventure for us. We pick up and go on a moment’s notice, but NST is always “home.”

By Vicki Mazel The “Getting To Know You” brunch held by NST Women’s Club on Tuesday, August 11th was so well attended that an overflow of new members had to be accommodated in the Coleridge Lounge.

Carol Meyerson handled that last minute logistics expertly.

Over 115 members were seated at the Greens with leader to faciilitate comraderie and interaction. A yellow rose was placed on each table to signify warmth and welcoming, and members had an opportunity to know more about each

other, At least 15 women had such a good time they plan to have lunch monthly.

The Women’s Club has a roster of close to 250 members and is still growing. The September event, a trip to the Nassau County Museum to see “The Moderns” is sold out.

The next event will be held on October 14th, 7:30 pm in the downstairs card room. and will feature a speaker from the Katz’s Womens Center at LIJ, on the topic of stress management.
