North Shore Towers University Club Speaker Dr. Adam Cohen. is how characteristics are transmitted from one generation to the next via its genes, the basic units of heredity. There are genetic tests, for example, for Down’s syndrome, hemophilia, and others. Genomics is the study of the entirety of a person’s genes, called the genome, and their functions. Genomic profiling in Oncology is an evolving technology useful for resistance detection, disease monitoring, and early detection of cancer. Precision Medicine collects and interprets genomic data and uses it to personalize treatments so that the patient can participate more effectively in their health care. It is individualized health care instead of a one-size-fits-all approach. It can predict and prevent disease and diagnose rare conditions. It can choose treatments with greater efficacy and fewer side effects. An example of its use is about a young girl who was diagnosed with leukemia. Her T lymphocytes were collected from her blood and re-engineered to recognize a protein found only on the surface of leuke-

mia cells. It was then infused back into her system. She was cancer-free 28 days later. The public must realize that genetic testing is only one part of a complex process that includes genetic risk assessment, diagnosis, and disease management. We are all fortunate to live in an era in which DNA can be assessed, and the results can contribute toward improving our health care and our quality of life. Dr. Cohn uses many advanced medical techniques in his practice, and his patients are grateful that he does since their health can be improved as a result. He offers 24/7 availability and manages patient care with specialists and hospitals. He treats his patients with compassion and competence and his patients reward him with their loyalty. Many have been with him for years some with decades Many residents are looking forward to attending the University Club’s events in the future, knowing that forthcoming presentations will be as informative and as interesting as they have been in the past.

he North Shore Towers University Club was formed by Shirley Wershba in 2011. It was originally called CUNY Club and a handful of residents joined. The club’s membership increased quickly and substantially due to its creative management and, no doubt, to its interesting speakers. Wershba always has two goals in mind: that the lecturers be informative and that they keep the audience interested. She has been successful in reaching her goals, which have also contributed to the club’s rapid growth. John Kenrick, an entertaining historian, was one of the club’s enjoyable speakers. Leslie Stahl, who is a well-known TV commentator, was another popular speaker. A recent presenter, Dr. Adam Cohen, had a winning smile and a confident manner. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and by the American Board of Geriatric Medicine–an impressive history. Some of his patients were in the audience, and when the meeting was over, they left together in a group to discuss their experiences with Dr. Cohen. Wershba discussed the reason she joined his practice. She was too ill months ago to travel to Manhattan to see her doctor. After calling a few local doctors, she found that none of them would come to her home to evaluate and treat her. A friend of hers called and was upset to learn that Wershba could not get the medical care that she needed and referred her doctor to her, telling her that he makes house calls when needed. The problem was that she was not his patient. Wershba called Dr. Cohen’s office and told them that she was ill but would like

to join his practice, since her doctor was located in Manhattan and she was unable to see him any longer. The doctor’s staff checked with him and called her back, saying that he could see her that evening. He did come to her home, discussed her ailments and treated her. She was charmed by his warmth and impressed by his competence and joined his practice that day. She had been very happy with his care that day and since, and thanked her friend over and over again for recommending him. Another patient joined his practice after seeing him lecture at NST at a recent University Club meeting. She was impressed with his presentation and arranged to meet with him at his office. She told him of suffering from low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) for years. She said, “My doctor told me to take a cookie whenever I was not feeling well, which I did, and I enjoyed my cookies and cakes very much; however, I gained more than 30 pounds as a result.” Dr. Cohen then recommended two products, a chocolate shake and a nutrition bar, both of which stabilized her blood sugar. She does not crave sweets very often now and lost over five pounds in less than a month. “I thank the University Club for presenting Dr. Cohen, and I’m very grateful to him for managing my care so competently,” she said. “He has changed my life significantly, and my health is better as a result.” The audience was very interested in Dr. Cohen’s recent lecture at NST titled, “Genetics and Precision Medicine.” For those who missed Dr. Cohen’s presentation, highlights of his talk begin with a review of how our DNA can impact the choices that we and our physicians make in managing our health. That is known as Precision Medicine. The following definitions are important in understanding the analysis of DNA: Genetics is the study of heredity, which

TOWERS TALES: DAWN STEINBERG

World Traveler, Camera Club Enthusiast By Fred Chernow

D

awn Steinberg moved to North Shore Towers 10 years ago and quickly joined many clubs and almost immediately participated in a variety of activities. She soon assumed a leadership role in the Camera Club and has shared her prize-winning photographs, most of which were taken as she trekked across the globe. Where did you grow up? I was born and raised in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn. I attended the Caton School, P.S. 249, and Walt Whitman Junior High School. I started high school at Erasmus Hall, but then my family moved, and I finished at Midwood. From there I went on to Hunter College on 68th Street and later did graduate work in education at Brooklyn College. Did you have a career? I started my career as a first-grade teacher and took maternity leave from 1975 until 1980. While on leave, I completed courses that would qualify me to teach gifted and talented classes and became certified in that field and did that for 30 years. Also, I became the grade leader and was elected as the UFT (union) chapter chairperson. What was the Annenberg Cultural Grant? Ambassador Walter Annenberg, the

philanthropist, and publisher of TV Guide and Seventeen Magazine gave millions of dollars to improve cultural opportunities in city schools. That brought $20,000 into our school to enrich the activities of our pupils. We used the funds to provide instruction in and musical instruments for pupils to play, and other extracurricular activities. In time, our school community began to change. More immigrant families moved in with language and parenting problems. I led the Mega Skills project that helped parents become more involved in the school and improve their child-raising skills. What about your family? I was married for 30 wonderful years when my husband passed away. I have one son who has two children of his own, a girl almost 13 and a boy/young man of 15. I’ve enjoyed traveling with them to foreign locations of their choosing. Have you done much traveling on your own? Some 16 years ago, I met a gentleman, and we’ve been globetrotting together ever since. Thank goodness for digital cameras. I’ve taken thousands of pictures on our travels. It’s so easy for me to delete the ones I don’t like. Africa and China were among my favorite destinations, and I plan to return. We also enjoyed trips to Australia, Chile, Vietnam, and the Galapagos Islands. What are some of your favorite activities at NST?

9/11: Some Positive News drugs and fighting for their lives. It was believed that ultimately more of these heroes would die than the 3,000 who perished when the buildings collapsed. The bill recognized their plight and guaranteed their health coverage forever. On 9/11 the Special Projects Committee will host a program in our movie theater at 7:30 pm. We will be able to acknowledge many of our staff and residents who served during the days and helped with the search for survivors. The program will include our local elected officials who will share their reactions to the worst attack on our civilian population in the history of the United States. Feel free to attend and bring friends and members of your family.

In 2002 I retired from teaching and seven years later sold my house in Marine Park, after living there for 33 years. I then moved to NST. There is so much here that I like: the gym, pool, and especially the friendly vendors in the arcade. Also, I patronize the movie theater, beauty salon, restaurants, dentist, and a library—all within walking distance. I belong to several clubs. The Camera Club occupies most of my free time. We have more than 20 members who possess a wide range of ability, and everyone is very supportive and helpful. Most of our time is spent critiquing each other’s photos, and sharing information about our cameras. Everyone is welcome. Time is also spent selecting photos to display in the Arcade and also in neighborhood venues like libraries, restaurants, and galleries. We also enjoy going to group photo shoots. Members own the gamut of cell phone/cameras to sophisticated SLRs. We meet on alternate Mondays in the Coleridge Lounge at 7:30 pm. There is a $25 per person annual membership fee. We also discuss how to use photo software, watch Great Courses videos on photography, and see PowerPoint presentations led by members. Can you recall an unusual camera shoot experience? Yes, a photo I took when in Vietnam

caused quite a stir here at NST. My small group of fellow travelers and I visited a wooden house built on stilts on a lake. The owners raised and sold crocodiles. It was a fascinating visit to the farm, until we heard a small child crying inside the house. We looked in and saw this toddler very upset with real tears (not crocodile tears). All in our group wanted to know why the boy was alone and crying. Through an interpreter, we learned that his parents had left him while they went to work with the crocodiles. They had put his pet in a tall wicker basket, and he couldn’t reach the lid to release the pet. When we lifted the large woven wicker lid out slivered a six-foot-long python– his pet. It went straight for the boy and wrapped itself around him, which made him stop crying and smiled as he enjoyed the “caressing” of the pet reptile. We all snapped photos of this tender scene. Once home, we included this photo of the happy child wrapped in a friendly python for an Arcade display. A few residents vociferously objected to our showing this example of child abuse and were disgusted by a scene showing a dead child. Our explanations were ignored, and they wanted the photo removed. Fortunately, the board ruled against such censorship, and the photo remained—another reason why I love living here.

By Bob Ricken NST Bd. of Directors President We have spoken often about our concern for those who first responded to the collapse of the Twin Towers. These brave police, fire personnel, and ironworkers searched first for bodies, and then for remains of those who perished when the Towers collapsed. A rare event occurred in Congress when Republicans and Democrats worked cooperatively to guarantee these workers health coverage forever. When the President signed the bill, accolades were given to Jon Stewart. Stewart, a comedian, was an outstanding spokesman who truly understood the plight of the workers, who were suddenly extremely ill from the toxins on the pile. Many of these heroes were paying for

To Be or Not to Be Tech-Savvy By Joyce Freed & Edwina Krutick Elise Alarimo, a 28-year resident of North Shore Towers with 20 plus years of experience in the field of technology, presented, “Why one should be tech-savvy” at The Brooklyn College Alumni & Friends Group, Wednesday, August 14th. Although there are many, here are 10 good reasons to become tech-savvy. The new technology can help you stay in touch with family and friends, and in particular, allow those with limited mobility to do so. It can also reduce feelings of depression and isolation, expand attention and improve memory, and you can get an answer to any question by Googling. You can also learn new skills and crafts (cooking, knitting), and learn new and play old games (scrabble, bridge, chess). Order for delivery any product you need (groceries, clothing, household), bank and pay bills (saving postage), read old and new books, and keep abreast of the latest local and global news. Alarimo is concerned about the safe use of our devices. She stressed the importance of choosing strong passwords (no names or addresses, and the inclusion of special characters), never sending your passwords or social security number by email, and keeping your antivirus software current. Also, do not store your information and

never open an unfamiliar email. When in doubt, click out. Some social media tips and tech etiquette include: avoid oversharing personal information and get permission to share that of others. Writing in caps equal shouting, and emojis have their special meanings, so research them before using. Yes, you can and should become techsavvy. You are never too old to learn, and you don’t have to learn everything, just what you need to know. Alarimo distributed a printed list of helpful websites and generously agreed to give us more advice on our specific devices, which she can repair when they misbehave. We look forward to her next presentation. P.S.: Gotta go, I’m on my way to buy a smartphone. Our next meeting will be Wednesday, October 23rd, when Judy Greenberg, graduate of Julliard, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Piano Performance and a Master of Arts Degree in Music Education from Colombia Teachers College, will present “Music Through The Ages.” Greenberg, a resident of North Shore Towers, performed as an accompanist and as part of the “Spirit” Ensemble, under the direction of Bert Konowitz.

ummer at North Shore Towers means enjoying the outdoor country club activities, including the pool, golf, tennis and now pickleball. Truly country club living at it’s finest. Ladies’ Golf President Kathy Bitetti believes there is nothing more invigorating than playing golf, and lounging at the pool while enjoying the warmth of summer. “Days are longer, nights are shorter, clothes get lighter, the air gets warmer, fruits get richer, outdoors get more exciting, golf gets busier, and life gets better,”

she said. Bd. President Bob Ricken said that the board’s decision to make tennis free to all country club members has resulted in a huge increase in tennis players this summer. “It’s wonderful to see several courts being used every day and we’re looking forward to some evening tennis as well,” he said. The Pickle Ball court is also now being used regularly and it has added another amenity for residents. “Being close to the flower and vegetable gardens and the barbecue area affords us all additional recreational activities,” he added. For those looking for air-conditioned activities, the new Art Studio is now being used by about 40 residents. The Special Projects Committee has added free art lessons being taught by one of the community’s artists who utilize the facility. “Summer is a tough act to follow, but the beauty of autumn and the white of winter will soon give way to the blossoms of spring and the intensity of another summer,” Bitetti concluded. “May we enjoy all the seasons.”

NST Cares for the Needy By Beverly Bord “It is better to give than to receive.” “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” The Greek philosopher Aristotle once surmised that the essence of life is “to serve others and to do good.” In 2013, the results of a study from Carnegie Mellon on volunteerism appeared in Harvard Health Publishing, the media, and publishing division of Harvard Medical School. The study concludes that there is a growing body of evidence to suggest that people who give their time to others might also be rewarded with better physical health and a longer life span. People who voluntarily give of themselves feel more socially connected, thus warding off loneliness and depression and perhaps even lowering blood pressure. Want to live longer? It is better to give than receive. North Shore Towers Cares for the Needy, in partnership with Commonpoint Queens,

the merger of Samuel Field Y and Central Queens Y, is a means by which North Shore Towers residents voluntarily reach out and donate essential daily items to the needy in the community. Co-chairpersons of North Shore Towers Cares for the Needy, Beverly Bord, and Arlene Greenwood, the “Brown Bin Girls,” applaud North Shore Towers residents for the donations that continue to fill the brown hamper-looking bins in the mailbox room in each building. The following is a list of items to be collected in September and October. September: Donations of gently used and new women’s clothing, shoes, accessories. October: New cleaning supplies (soaps, detergent, dishwasher soap, sponges, wipes, towels, napkins.) Items will be donated to the Central Queens Food Pantry in Forest Hills. For more information about volunteer programs at Commonpoint Queens contact SSchachter@CommonpointQueens.org.

Towers Investment Club News By Bud Bank The North Shore Towers Investment Club held its monthly meeting in the Coleridge Lounge on Tuesday, August 13th. We discussed our feelings about where the stock market is heading for the next few months. For the period from January 1 thru July 30, the club is +13.2 percent. We are very careful when we decide to buy or sell our stocks. Each member has an equal vote, and everyone has a turn to give

their recommendations. The investment club is unique; our common goal is to enjoy each other, respect everyone’s opinion, and make some money. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, September 10th at 7:30 pm in the Coleridge Lounge. All North Shore Towers residents are welcome. Please call our membership chairman Bud Bank for information or a reservation at (347) 502-7365.

Brooklyn College Connection By Joyce Freed and Edwina Krutick The Brooklyn College Alumni were taken on a virtual tour of The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy on Wednesday, July 17th, by George Rhynedance, West Point graduate, AH-64 Apache Pilot and Director of External and Congressional Affairs at the USMMA. The USMMA was built on a site originally owned by well-known retailer, Henri Bendel. The property and its building were purchased by auto magnate Walter Chrysler as a summer home, at the time the Chrysler Building was being constructed. Another owner, The Lundy Family (of seafood renown) sold the property to the U.S. Government in 1942, and in 1943 the USMMA was dedicated by FDR to devote all of its resources to WWII. The mission of the Merchant Marine is to transport cargo, both commercial and military, all over the world, and to train skilled seamen and the ship’s captains to operate and maintain the large vessels that carry cargo. The Merchant Marine Academy educates the matriculant at no cost to the student or his family. What does this free education,

valued at $280,000 per student, bring to the graduate? After completing a rigorous academic program and real-world experiences on sea vessels, the midshipmen graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree, a US Coast Guard License, and an Officer’s Commission in the US Navy or another branch of the military. These awards pretty much ensure an exciting future and potentially, a very handsome salary. Full disclosure, each graduate is required to fulfill the terms of a service obligation to repay the federal government’s substantial investment. So what about women? From 2,000 applications, 280 students were accepted into the Class of 2023, and 25 percent were women. The USMMA is proud to let you know that they were the first federal service academy to accept women (two years ahead of West Point). We all have an invitation to visit our neighbor The USMMA at Kings Point, a national treasure that should not be the best-kept secret among the federal service academies.

The Founders’ Congress By Roberta Gould James Coll gave a fascinating talk to the North Shore Tower’s Women’s Club on Wednesday, July 17th. It was attended by over 100 women, and was entitled, ‘“what happened to the founders’ congress?” Cole talked about the role of congress in our democratic system. The three parts of our system of government, legislative, executive, and judicial, should be separate but co-equal and serve as a check on each other. James Madison envisioned a powerful legislative government, while Alexander Hamilton envisioned a powerful executive

government. The legislative branch, consisting of the House of Representatives gives power to the people, and the Senate gives power to the states. Congress can make laws, collect taxes, and declare war. Today, what the founders envisioned is no longer happening. The congress now reacts to the president, and in so doing it reduces its role. Congress should be using its power given to it by the constitution. As usual, Coll’s presentation was spectacular, and everyone was helped to understand what is happening in a very clear way.

NST Men’s Club News By Arnie Rabinowitz

T

he North Shore Towers Men’s Club welcomed Dr. Stacey Brisman, introduced by Jerry Siegel, on Thursday, August 8th. Dr. Brisman is a board-certified dermatologist with over 19 years of experience. In addition to diagnosing and treating diseases of the skin, she also performs cosmetic procedures. She received her medical degree from Emory University School of Medicine. A doctor primarily located in Great Neck, New York, Dr. Brisman recently implemented a unique concept she refers to as “Walk-in Dermatology.” Walk-in Dermatology combines traditional dermatology with the convenience of urgent care. You can walk in to see a dermatologist without an appointment. Dr. Brisman’s facility is located in Greenvale, New York. For many of us who have experienced weeks of waiting for an appointment, or those more prone to skin cancers, this walk-in concept is ideal. During her presentation, Dr. Brisman discussed different types of cancers, specifically, melanoma. It is a more serious type of skin cancer. There are four stages,

and treatment plans are made specifically for each patient. Dr. Brisman shared a story about a former patient that had melanoma. Unfortunately, this patient had waited a few weeks too long before she scheduled an appointment. This delay put her at a greater risk for both recovery and treatment. Because of walk-in dermatology, this type of dilemma can now be prevented. Dr. Brisman also went on to discuss basal and squamous cancers. Basal cells are a type of cell within the skin that produces new skin cells as the old ones die. Unlike melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, another type of skin cancer that is common but fortunately never fatal. Typically, these cancers are not very dangerous but should be removed. It is important to monitor any growth or change of appearance in your skin. Dr. Brisman suggested taking pictures of anything that may look suspicious so that you can notice the changes. She says a body check is very important, and also recommends getting an annual physical once a year. She does a head to toe examination and even in between toes. We all know that the sun is the greatest contributor to skin cancer; however, family

history may also be a factor. Dr. Brisman suggested staying out of the sun between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm, and to wear as much clothing, hats, and or sunglasses as possible. She also emphasized using sunscreen, as well as staying out of any tanning beds. Skin products that contain zinc and titanium are considered the best sun blockers. Specifically, the brand La RochePosay makes many good sun blockers. For these sunscreens to be effective, they

should be applied every two hours. At the end of the lecture, Dr. Brisman took some questions. She answered all questions with both clarity and patience. Discussing cancer is not always an upbeat topic; however, the knowledge Dr. Brisman communicated is very important. The next Men’s Club speaker will be Sal St. George, who will discuss Danny Kaye, a topic in a much lighter vein, on September 12th. See you then!

What is Home Care and what type of Home Care is right for you? and improve your health so that you can remain in the familiar surroundings and safety of your home. The next type of home care is Personal Care. This is non-medical care such as assistance with daily living activities. Those caregivers who provide personal care are specifically trained to help an individual with a variety of daily activities. The services vary based on a person’s individual needs but can include help caring home attendant or home health aide, named Margie comes four times a week to help Joyce with grooming as well as shopping and meal preparation. How does one pay for home care services? Home care can be covered by paying privately, it may be covered by private or commercial insurance as well as Medicare, Part A, and B, and Medicaid depending on the type of home care needed and how you qualify for that care. For example, Medicare will cover Laura for inhome physical therapy and skilled nursing because she is homebound and experiencing great difficulty leaving her home after being hospitalized for a HIP fracture. In this case, Laura receives physical therapy, occupational therapy and skilled nursing care from the Certified Home Health Care Agency. Laura saw her physician, face-to-face, in the hospital prior to discharge; the MD’s plan of care for Laura notifies Medicare and the Certified Home Health Agency of the services and equipment that Laura needs so that she can be cared for in her own home. Certified home health care agencies are here to help you and will discuss the options available to you based on your individual care needs and the type of insurance coverage that you may have.

These are excellent questions as there are different types of home care that can support you or your family during illness or the onset of a new medical condition. Home health care is medically focused allowing a person to have specific care needs provided safely in the comfort and privacy of one’s own home. This can reduce undue stress, anxiety, and hardship for family caregivers. This type of home care is provided by licensed professionals such as registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech therapists or social workers. These medical services can include wound care, the administration of medications, such as insulin and other injections, as well as the overall monitoring of your health. To illustrate, Arthur was recently diagnosed with Diabetes, he required a medically focused type of home care. Sarah, a registered nurse from the certified home health care agency was able to come and provide Arthur with education about this new diagnosis of Diabetes as well as diabetic diet counseling. As it turned out, due to tremors in his hands Arthur was not able to self-inject so the registered nurse was able to administer his injections. Ruth is another example; she experienced a recent hospitalization due to a fall. When she was discharged from the hospital, the certified home health care agency sent a physical therapist to her home on the same day of her discharge to begin a course of restorative therapy. Initiating a client-centered plan of rehabilitation care, the physical therapist gradually helped Ruth increase her strength and tolerance which resulted in a significant improvement in Ruth’s ability to walk, climb stairs and regain independence. The true goal of home care is to address your needs
