We warmly welcome our North Shore Towers neighbors

NST Veterans Salute

North Shore Towers held it’s annual Veterans Day Salute on Friday, November 11th, with speakers and audience members dressed in patriotic red, white and blue.

Taking part in his 7th annual program at the co-op, Fred Chernow quoted President Franklin Roosevelt, “The great est casualty of war to those who served is being forgotten.”

Chernow, who served in the Korean War, discussed the beginnings of Veterans Day. After WWI, veterans’ groups around the country formed a national organization called the American Legion, chartered by congress and made up of individual regional posts. This year, local Post 103 Lit tle Neck/Douglaston was represented by its Commander, Sebastian D’Agostino, who led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Although not a veteran, Director Theresa Oropallo rep resented the North Shore Towers Bd. of Directors to dis cuss women in the military.

“It was a very moving evening with patriotic music, videos, and speakers,” she said. “I will especially carry with me the closing video of John Wayne leading a cast of actors and singers from the past singing God Bless America.”

Looking at the changes that have occurred over the years, Oropallo explained that 35 years after being created in 1943, the WACS and WAVES were disbanded in 1978 as the Armed Forces became integrated. But it took until 2008 to have the first female four-star general and 2011 for the first female Surgeon General. And finally, in 2013

the ban was lifted on women in combat. She also showed a video of American women in battle.

“We thank them, as well as all our courageous men who have served our country, for their sacrifices to help pre serve our way of life,” Oropallo said.

Lorraine Bertan explained that Veterans Day had its roots in the Armistice following the end of fighting dur ing World War I. The armistice occurred on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of November 1918. It was called Armistice Day until 1954, when President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the bill proclaiming the holiday “Veterans Day.” She also discussed the history of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, which was dedicated at Arlington National Cemetery on November 11th, 1921. It was inscribed: “Here Rests In Honored Glory An Ameri can Soldier Known Only to God.”

Bob Bader, 98, told of his experiences serving in the Air Force during World War II. He entered the service in 1943 at age 19 and maintained radar devices in planes. “I thought the Towers event went well, however there aren’t many of us left from WWII,” he said. “I count my bless ings from my experieces that worked out so well.”

Terry Feit discussed the GI Bill that helped veterans with tuition, medical benefits, and home buying.

Vocalists Russell Targrove and Mike Jones encouraged the audience to join them in singing patriotic songs such as “God Bless the USA.”

Law 11, Garage, Elevators, Security

Iam writing this as I grapple with some very weighty issues, including:

•Timing for Thanks giving Day dinner when the Bills/Lions game is

at 12:30 pm (Bills being tied with my be loved Jets for 2nd place in the AFC East as of this writing), Giants/Cowboys game is at 4:30 pm, and Patriots/Vikings game is at 8:20 pm.

•Strategic T-Day carb choices so the in evitable carb-coma does not interfere with enjoyment of the overall Holiday.

•Whether to do my on-line holiday shopping on Black Friday or Cyber Mon day.

Happily, I can report that things at NST are moving forward in a productive man ner, and your Board is continuing to work harder than we ever imagined possible to get things where they need to be. Here’s the short-list update:

Local Law 11 (“LL11”): Work is cur rently on target for completion by the end of December 2022. In Building 1, the A, D, E, G/H, K/L, N, O, and V lines have been completed. If you live in those lines and have not yet done so, you can put your stuff back on your terrace. (Call Central Maintenance if you need assistance mov ing stuff.) The S/R, T, and W lines are awaiting final inspection in late November, and if no additional work I needed, it will then be complete as well. One note: the Vline equipment will not be removed until the DOB inspection is completed and DOB approves unlocking of the V terraces due to the prior violation.

For Building 2, the A, E, G/H, N, O, R/S, and T lines have been completed. The K/L, D, and V line work is awaiting final inspection in late November, and if no additional work is needed, it will then be complete.

For Building 3, the A/B, D, K/L, O, V, and W lines have been completed. The G/H line work is awaiting final inspection in late November, and if no additional work is needed, it too will be complete too.

Garage: Phase One garage work is also moving along nicely. All garage drains have been cleaned and will be water

proofed. One 15” drain was discovered to have a crack and will be replaced. As I mentioned, we are consolidating work originally contemplated in Phases 2-10 into Phase 1 work to maximize the results while minimizing the inconvenience to the affected cars and significantly reducing the overall time and cost to complete the ga rage project.

As presently scoped, the Phase 1 work will now address 14% of the total garage project and repair the worst/most urgent conditions, which will, in turn, prevent ad ditional deterioration in other areas of the garage. Phase 1 work is presently targeted for completion in May 2023, and Phase 2 repairs are projected to begin in Septem ber/October 2023. By changing the overall approach to the project, we are working toward completing the entire garage proj ect in about three years at a rough-estimate total cost of about $15.3 million.

Elevators: We have received the initial overview of the proposed work from our elevator consultant, VDA, which is putting together the proposed project specifica tions. We will meet with them in the next couple of weeks to discuss the proposed scope of work and prepare the job for the RFP/bidding process. Remember this work is subject to a deadline of 1/1/2027 for completion of all 24 elevators at NST, and every elevator in NYC must comply on the same deadline.

We are moving as swiftly as possible to ensure that NST can get this done in the most cost-effective manner using the best vendors who can properly service a job of this magnitude.

Security: A Request for Proposals (RFP) was issued in November, and sealed bids are due shortly. There have been a number of bidders so far, and we will keep you posted.

Mortgage Refinance: We are very pleased to report that the NST mortgage has been successfully refinanced for a 30year period in a manner that provides fund ing for necessary capital improvements on very favorable terms. More informa tion will be forthcoming shortly, and the Board is planning an open meeting in the foreseeable future to address this and other aspects.

Country Club: Positive changes at the Country Club are evolving daily. Under Manager Coco Xie, new exercise classes

have been added, including some early morning and evening classes, to ensure all NST residents can find a class and time that works for them. Be on the lookout for other improvements in the weight/machine room as well. Marble dusting of the outdoor pool must be done before the pool reopens in Spring 2023, and repair work is needed to the stairs at both sides of the outdoor pools. Management is presently obtaining bids for this work to ensure the pool will be open for Memorial Day 2023.

Repairs to golf holes 10 and 13 will also be completed before the Spring 2023 golf season begins. We are working with the community to address the ongoing tennis vs. pickleball issue, which is raging at coops, condos, public parks, and other rec reational facilities nationwide, not just at NST. Efforts are ongoing to find a happy middle ground for all at a cost the commu nity can reasonably bear. Also, for those playing cards, Mah Jong, etc., indoors this winter, the VIP Grille delivers anywhere

within the Country Club facility (all card rooms), so you can get food/drinks without interrupting your game.

Neighbors, there is so much more go ing on in the Board room that I could fill up another couple of pages (but the editor said no because they have a newspaper to run), so I will end here for now. As we swing into the Holiday season, I am mind ful of the long list of things for which I am eternally thankful, including, among other things: dear family and friends, old and new; resumption of reasonably normal activities after the long COVID slog; New York bagels; the Mets having not stunk and the Jets having a great season so far; cof fee ice cream; the privilege of calling our fabulous NST home; and the opportunity to represent such terrific neighbors to help make our home even better.

Wishing everyone good health, good fortune, and a very happy, merry whatever you celebrate.

Women’s Club: Hopper’s a Show Stopper

Afull assemblage of Women’s Club mem bers gathered to hear Dr. Thomas Germano

speak on the artist Edward Hopper’s “The New York Collection” on Thursday, No vember 3rd. Germano paints teaches and lectures on Studio Art and Art History at Farmingdale State College.

For the Women’s Club, he presented a visual art lecture highlighting Hopper’s techniques, subjects, and personal profiles. In describing the various subjects, Ger mano pointed out that many paintings re flected the interests of Hopper and his wife, Josephine, who was the female model for his work.

Many of the Hopper’s interests centered around Broadway and movie theaters, parks, and various residential areas where they resided in New York City. Hopper is considered the foremost realistic painter of the century, and his environment in New York City is reflected in many of his paint ings. Of particular note is his residence in a brownstone in Washington Square North. Following the influence of his favorite Pa risian artist Edward Degas, Hoppers’ can vasses began at 18 in 1900 when he painted “Solitary Figure In A Theater.”

With slides only and without notes, Germano described Hopper’s use of light and shadows, airways, and windows to enhance his style of composition. In the 1950s he did a series called “Sunlight On

The Brownstones,” “Sunlight In The Caf eteria,” and showed bathed light coming in from windows. His wife Josephine, her self an artist, portrayed everything from a pensive usherette in a movie theater to a Manhattan apartment dweller with streak ing light coming into her bedroom.

Working with everything from charcoal to oils, the Nyack-born Hopper was also a hoarder and saved everything, including movie and theater stubs. In 1966 he did a painting called “Two Comedians,” which was purchased by Frank Sinatra. Many other paintings reflected Hopper’s interest in dining out, including the Automat, the hustle and bustle of a crowded restaurant, and the loneliness of an empty one.

Hopper’s repertoire was a tribute to his time in Paris as a young man, where he fre quented the Louvre daily. Enamored with the Louvre artists and the Dutch Masters, he incorporated all his artistic experience into a lifelong reflection of his life and sur roundings. Architecture, men in offices, dining scenes, rooftops, and windows were all captured in his inimitable style. In ad dition to the completed paintings, Hopper labored through many sketches until satis fied with the result. From Paris to the Art Students League and commercial art, he remains a sought-after and highly talented artist of his time.

There is a new hat in town. The Men’s Club has recently ordered more hats with the club logo. It has been almost five years since we ordered the previous shipment of the monogrammed hats. Since the last time, there have been a lot of members who have been asking when they can get their hats.

R.I.P Joe Reveman

We lost a long-standing member re cently on Friday, November 11th when Joe Reveman passed away. He was a proud veteran of World War II military service. The Bronx native got an early start in the military, having been drafted in 1943 at the

ripe age of 18. His training included Morse Code and radio and gun training before joining the 398th Bomb Group. He and the other crew members flew to Nuthamp stead, Hertfordshire, in England, to destroy industrial plants and factories in Germany.

During his military tenure, the 398th Bomb Group flew 24 missions over Ger many, the last of which occurred in April 1945. He experienced plane crashes in Greenland and Germany during his tour. During the first, adverse weather condi tions caused them to reroute a scheduled landing in Reykjavik, Iceland, to Green land. Reveman received a Purple Heart for the injuries he sustained.

His nephew Bryan Falk created the doc umentary “Riding the Airwaves: Stories of a B-17 Radio Operator,” detailing the crashes and other stories from Reveman’s time in the Air Force. He was incredibly proud to tell his experiences and story por trayed in the film, which is part of the Li brary of Congress in Washington, DC, as part of the Joseph Reveman Collection.

He will be missed but forever remem bered by friends, family, and in the history archives in Washington, DC.

Very Busy Month at NST

Dusty Baker, I believe, is the oldest winning manager at the age of 72. The Suffolk County police force caught the catalytic converter gang, and the election is over. I thought it was very exciting.

I walked in the garden at North Shore Towers recently and stopped at a table where three ladies were sitting. I asked them what they thought about the high prices of cars, and they all said the same thing, “Who cares? I don’t drive anymore.” I then went over to a table of seven and asked what they thought of the high gas prices, and they all said the same thing, “Who cares? I don’t drive.”

Dunckley or Leonardi. Their phone numbers are in the green book. The membership fee is $10 for life–a great bargain.

I usually talk at the NST Veteran’s celebration, but I needed to go to the Garden City Surgical Center to correct an eye problem. Part of my talk was about joining the Army Reserve for eight years. A couple of months after being honorably discharged, I read that my unit was called to Vietnam. How about that?

I was living on the South Shore in a small town. We had our police force and police reserve, and I joined a police reserve for five years. I guess I like to volunteer.

And finally, what can I say about the weather? It’s getting cold, so everybody keep warm and healthy.

Hopefully, I’ll write another article next month. Hope you all enjoy this one.

The Nets Come Home

I’ve always won dered how the Nets were named. Could it have been to ac knowledge the netting under a basketball rim?

My guess is that they were named af ter New York Mets and Jets. But naming a team after those two teams in1967 would only portend a dark future. Their first name was the New Jersey Nets, and would you believe they played their home games in an armory in Teaneck, NJ?

Their next homes would be in Com mack and a place in West Hempstead called Island Gardens. in 1972 fthey moved to the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, led by their most outstanding player, Julius Erving. They won ABA championships in 1974 and 1976. By this time, they could easily have changed their name to the Wan derers or the Nomads.

But wait, there were more places wait ing to see them. From 1997-1981 Piscat away, East Rutherford, and The Prudential Center in Newark patiently awaited their

arrival. The teams hadn’t had much suc cess, but in 2002 and 2003, they were led by Jason Kidd. They managed to reach the NBA Finals only to be eliminated by the Los Angeles Lakers and the San Antonio Spurs.

The Nets now reside at the Barclay Cen ter in downtown Brooklyn, and I’m sad to say their future does not look promising.

The Nets were on the right track a few years ago. Three superstars and titles will follow. Enter Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, and James Harden. Since their arrival, Harden has been traded, and Durant and Irving have gotten two coaches fired.

Last year Irving missed a large part of the season because he felt it wasn’t neces sary to take the COVID-19 vaccination.

This year he has turned his attention to antisemitism, praising an openly antisemitic documentary now on the internet.

The Nets have been in Brooklyn for nearly 10 years, and this will likely be their permanent home. My allegiances still lie with the Knicks, but after watching them blow a 23-point lead to the Atlanta Hawks, it’s really getting too hard.

Go Knicks and Nets.
