9/11 Commemoration

NST Residents and Staff Who Served at Ground Zero Honored

T

he North Shore Towers community gathered in the Arcade movie theater to commemorate 9/11, with a special afternoon tribute paid to residents and management staff who served at Ground Zero.

Special Projects Committee Chairperson Bob Ricken explained that the goal of the program was to be a reminder of the nation’s “worst civilian tragedy,” and to take pride in the country’s response, highlighting Manhattan’s new Freedom Tower and museum. “Whether we’re Democrats, Republicans or independents, there is one thing we can all do, and that is support budget appropriations for those whose health was affected by the collapse of the Twin Towers,” Ricken said.

Retired resident firefighter Tom Lyons and police officer Todd Heiman were thanked for their 9/11 service.

Lyons attends every funeral of firefighters who became ill from their 9/11 duty, while Heiman does not often discuss the events of that day.

They were joined on the stage by three members of the co-op’s Management team, Glen Kotowski, Steve Cairo and Bruce Vogel. Kotowski was then a Deputy Inspector, Cairo a lieutenant, and Vogel a Sergeant, and they had the task of leading their men in the search for victims.

Lt. Bill Sera represented the local Fire Department and had to leave once during the program to answer a call, since he and his staff were still on duty.

Two videos were shown, created by John Virga and Marty Ragusa. The first depicted the horrors of the September 11th terror attack. Ricken explained the shocked reaction of Americans as the film showed people fleeing from the area and being overtaken by the huge plume of ashes. The second film showed the construction of the Freedom Tower from the remains of the World Trade Center to the installation of the top of the new steeple.

There were about 350 residents and guests in atten-

dance. “There was a very positive response to the program,” Ricken said. “Many people expressed the desire for this to become an annual event.

Rabbi Randy Sheinberg, and Cantor Guy Bonne. Brittany De Varso, of Charles H. Greenthal Property Sales, sang “God Bless America.” Taps was performed by Victor Portez after a moment of silence.

Haddassah Book Club Borish Fishman’s “A Replacement Life” will be discussed at the Hadassah Book Club on Wednesday, October 14th, at 2:00 pm in the Coleridge Lounge, in the Building 3 Arcade. The discussion will be led by Bern Rosenthal and Arlene Augenbraun.

“A Replacement Life” is critic and short story writer Boris Fishman’s first novel.

The New Yorker has called it an “ingenious debut.” And, according to Library Journal, “Fishman, an émigré from Belarus, captures the complexities of family, nationality and history as he cleverly ties the loose ends of truth, justice, morality and family into a tidy bow.” According to The Week, “… it brims with descriptive brilliance and crackles with irony.” The book is available in hard cover and paperback versions.

NST’s Fountain of Youth Pilates Reformer Available In TCC Aerobics Studio

A

year ago I had no idea of what the term “Reformer” meant. If I were to guess I probably would say that it had something to do with a juvenile delinquent correctional institution. When I went to the demonstration forum inside the North Shore Towers aerobics studio I was saw two bed-like platforms with springs, pulleys, and ropes, and learned that the term actually refers to an apparatus developed by Joseph Pilates to help an individual develop better health and fitness and that it is related to his more known method of mat pilates.

Joseph Pilates was born in 1880 in Germany as a sickly and frail child who spent the rest of his life helping others develop a strong mind with a strong core-based body. The adage, “Necessity is the Mother of Invention” is something that applied to his success as a leader in the fitness world, based on his innovative methodology to improve the health and well-being of his clients.

His reputation came to be embraced by dance professionals (George Balanchine, Martha Graham), Olympic athletes, and professional athletes of every nationality, because of his techniques that were both proactive and rehabilitative. Hollywood stars in the 1970’s caught on to his concept of developing a strong “core” that is necessary for good movement in every phase of daily life.

So, my conclusion was that this is not a fad or flavor of the month, but a methodology that has been highly successful for people in the know for more than 100 years.

North Shore Towers is an amazing and vital community with an outstanding gym and a multitude of fitness classes and now we have been introduced to what can be seen as the pinnacle of them all, the Pilates Reformer.

While Ponce de Leon never did quite find the Fountain of Youth (he did find Florida, which makes sense to our NST fitness-craving community), we have perhaps found something even better. The Reformer is for every BODY– pun intended.

Kicking off the fall season, on Wednesday, October14th, 7:30 pm, Dr. Penny Stern, Director of Preventive Medicine, Katz’s Women’s Institute of North Shore-LIJ will speak on stress management. Dr. Stern is an occupational specialist, and her expertise is in promoting health and safety through information, awareness, and analysis of the physical, social, and mental well being of groups and individuals.

H i g h l i g h t i n g t h e We d n e s d a y, November 18th event, 7:30 pm, will be Philip Harwood, noted film historian and adjunct lecturer at CW Post-Hutton House. Noted for creating and teaching courses devoted to film and media history, he will be speaking on “The Life and Times of Katharine Hepburn.”

Harwood also teaches film studies at the

December is holiday time, and on Wednesday, December 16th, at 7:00 pm, the Women’s Club will host a holiday party, free of charge, featuring entertainer Doug LeBlang on keyboard, accordion, and clarinet. A gifted musician, his versatility takes audiences through journeys of music around the world.

LeBlang is also a great storyteller and comedian. In addition to entertainment, food, wine, and soft drinks will be served in a festive atmosphere. A sign up sheet will be available and members are encouraged to make their holiday plans early.

Planned by Gloria Beck and Lois Carus, the group viewed the exhibition of “The Moderns.” Two docents led them through

the rooms filled with paintings by Chagall, Degas, Leger, Miro, Picasso and many more. Following the trip, the group returned to Towers On The Green for a luncheon organized by Eva Kessner and Chickie Kaufman. The day of art, culture, and repast provided fond memories for all.

Tower Tales: Fran Gordon, From Nepal to NST Continued from Page 7 enjoyable and satisfying. I retired at the peak of my career–young, healthy and with a few coins in my pocket. I was now able to follow my wanderlust and travel any time of the year and not be restricted by school holidays. Africa and Asia always intrigued me, and tops on my list was mystical magical Nepal. However, I had to wait six years until the Maoist Revolution had calmed down.

So, I began visiting different countries in Africa and was numbed with overwhelming sadness and sorrow at what I saw, smelled and heard. I was in culture shock! I tried to initiate a few projects but failed in my attempt. I felt powerless.

What happened when you got to Nepal?

Nepal is a beautiful landlocked country nestled between India and China. It is one of the 10 poorest countries in the world.

Roughly the size of Tennessee, with a population of 28 million people, the majority are Hindu and Buddhist. It is steeped in religion.

I got friendly with my Sherpa guide on my first trek to Everest Base Camp. Knowing I would be returning in six months to trek the Annapurna region, he invited me to visit his grandmother’s village where he was born.

We bought notebooks, pens and pencils for the local children. When the headmaster asked me if I was coming back again, I knew I found my calling and founded Nepal Program For Progress.

In the areas where we work, houses are constructed of local materials, food is cooked over a fire, electricity is sparse or nonexistent and most crops are for family consumption. Many men take two-year contract jobs out of the country to subsidize

the family income and many others are busy leading mountain hikes during the four month tourist season.

In the mountainous regions, transportation is a problem. Locals earn their income by portering heavy loads on their backs as animal transport is expensive and sometimes impossible. Medical facilities are sparse and villagers carry those in need to receive medical help. I soon realized that if you are not cold, hungry or sick life is good. But if one of those things goes wrong it is a catastrophe.

What happened when you returned home?

I understood that to be taken seriously and attempt to raise money for these projects, Nepal Program For Progress(NPFP) needed to be legitimate. NPFP is now a registered 501(c)(3) not for profit organization helping rural schools in the Solokhumbu District of Nepal. I have made fund raising presentations to different organizations, but most funding comes from friends and family. If you would like more information, please contact me at nepalpfp@me.com.

As one parent said to me, “We have many problems, but we have pride to solve the problems.” Eager for their children to have a bright future, parents understand that education is the key to success. But Nepal will always have a large rural agrarian population and most of the children will always live in a rural community. So what impresses me the most is how smart and resilient these people are. They are creative and inventive

and survive in a harsh environment where most of us would perish.

What are some of your projects and what effect has the earthquake had in this area?

NPFP ensures a safe environment for children. We have constructed new school buildings, brought fresh water to four schools, delivered educational materials, built library rooms and have supplied warm clothing. We have been involved with 10 schools. The earthquake has heavily damaged three of our schools. We are in the process of making the necessary repairs. Homes have completely collapsed and families are living in tents. The loss is insurmountable.

Where do you stay during your twiceyearly visits?

My Nepali co-director and partner, Purna Man Tamang and his family have graciously opened their home to me. In Kathmandu, there are seven of us in one room with a communal toilet. When we travel into the countryside, I stay at his family home in Salleri or local community homes when we are visiting our schools.

What do you do when you are living in NST? I’m so happy with my decision to live here. I regularly go to the gym taking advantage of the aerobics classes, Body Blast, and Zumba. I also enjoy playing Bridge at the Lake Success Jewish Center and being part of the Great Neck Choral Society. I am

privileged to live in this community. I often think of the lesson I learned from a local artisan when I visited the African country of Burkina Faso. I spent an hour in his studio with him and other artists. They started to name different countries they had heard of.

I began to draw a world map connecting all of these places. As I was leaving, he gave me a small piece of pottery. I said no thank you as I was not going to buy anything. He insisted I take it. I then offered to pay him but he wouldn’t accept my money. It was at that moment the tears began to flow as I learned one of my life’s most valuable lessons. “He who has nothing gives to she who has everything, but she who has everything really has nothing.” I carry that with me today.

Men’s Club: WWII History, Swan Club

By Paul Nettler pproximately 50 Men’s Club members and guests were treated to a fascinating history lesson taught by our neighbor, Bob Zucker, on Wednesday, September 16th. He was personally involved in that bit of history, and has done an amazing amount of research on the subject.

The subject was the invasion of Japan that never was in the Fall of 1945. At that time, Zucker was a Lieutenant-Commander in the Navy and commanded an eight-ship task unit in the Fifth Fleet. He described in great detail the preparations that both we and the Japanese made for the invasion that everyone knew was coming. We were prepared to suffer huge casualties as our experiences on Iwo Jima and Okinawa foretold.

Even though we were able to decipher the Japanese code, there were many things to fear. For instance, they had about 12,000 planes, which was five times our estimate, and those were Kamikazes which had sunk or heavily damaged some of our ships. They had missile capabilities as well.

The plan was to invade the southernmost island, which was rocky and full of caves so that the Japanese could actually build underground air bases that we couldn’t detect. There was also the fact that the civilian population would resist to the death along with their military. It was calculated that we could suffer 1 million casualties before Japan was finally conquered, which begs the debate as to whether we should or shouldn’t have dropped the bomb.

As Zucker pointed out, even today there are those (including some scholars) who

feel that it was an immoral act. They seem to ignore Pearl Harbor, the Bataan Death March, and the multitude of atrocities perpetrated by the Japanese armies in the years leading up to the war. Zucker pointed out that some people believe that the civilian Japanese death toll would have been much greater if we had engaged in conventional warfare and not dropped the bomb. In informal conversation afterwards, no one in our audience expressed any reservations about dropping the bomb. In fact, one of the ladies in the audience made a heartfelt statement about what it might have been like, and the things that would never have happened, had her husband not come home.

Zucker also gave us some insight as to how Emperor Hirohito was treated.

Common opinion was that he was merely a figure head and had nothing to do with the planning and carrying out of the war, but in fact he was calling the shots. He was not treated as a war criminal, as were people like Tojo and the German leaders. Because the Japanese people worshipped Hirohito as a god, fanatically, we could never have gotten his and their cooperation during the occupation. And as history shows, that laid the groundwork for our becoming fast allies, which we sorely needed when China, our former ally, became in a sense, our enemy.

Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 7th at 7:30 pm in the large card room. Our featured speaker will be Elaine Freed, whose family owned The Red Apple Rest, a famous restaurant on Route 17 on the way to the Catskill Mountains resorts. She wrote a book about the restaurant, which served over 1 million customers annually. She will tell us about its

story from its shaky beginnings during the Depression through its colorful and bumpy trip through the decades. For many readers this is sure to be a trip down Memory Lane.

On Wednesday, September 9th, over 100 members and guests attended our end of season farewell dinner at the Swan Club. Farewell meaning good-bye to the Snowbirds who will shortly be starting their migration south. Good conversation, good food, good wine. The end cut of roast beef was like “buttah.” Also we proved that we are still young enough to “cut a rug,” when the disk jockey played “Sweet Caroline.”

And speaking of eating, we will be having a paid up membership brunch on Sunday, October 25th from 11:30 to 1:30 pm. It will be free for members and $20 for significant others and guests.

The Current Events Group continues to attract a lot of interest. The next meeting will be on Monday, October 5th at 10:30 am in the Coleridge Lounge in Building 3. Gary Darche will be moderating. Club members are encouraged to come on down and give it a try. The discussions are friendly and respectful. At the last meeting such varied topics were discussed as the Iranian agreement, both Republican and Democratic presidential candidates, the Kentucky County Clerk’s refusal to allow gay marriages, the City’s homeless population, and to prove that our membership still has a pulse–the topless ladies of Times Square.

They have seven children and seven grandchildren, and Florida sounds like a wonderful escape to her, too. An old proverb: “A woman’s work is never done,” applies to all woman.

Some rental apartment dwellers and Three Towers Associates have a lease arrangement. The tenant, their family, or the staff, let Jim Short know that the apartment will be vacant. After 30 years of occupancy the apartments need renovation. If the rent is up-to-date, the apartment is in fairly good shape, and is vacant, the renovation can be started as soon as the apartment is sold. They redo the kitchen cabinets, counters and floors, the bathrooms, and paint the walls. Some buyers can get a credit for the renovation that was contemplated. Then they can hire their own contractor or designer and can choose their own upgraded cabinets, counter tops, floors, etc. A few buyers have completely gutted their apartments,

changing it from a two-bedroom to a three-bedroom apartment, for example, and enlarging the kitchen or baths. Any upgrade in an apartment above what the Three Towers Associates provides is the responsibility of the buyer.

New Yorker Contractors did some construction work for Somers and Bronfman when North Shore Towers was being built, and when the Three Towers Associates offices needed a facelift they hired them to do it because they were familiar with their work.

Although a member of the Board, he Short doesn’t vote on screenings because of his position with the Three Towers AssociationAssociates. “As a member of the Board, I have a fiduciary responsibility to every shareholder and I take that responsibility very seriously.” Jim said.

New Gym Equipment Celebrating two years as Gym Director at North Shore Towers, Steve Avellino discussed the club’s new exercise equipment at the Towers Country Club open meeting, Wednesday, October 4. Four new pieces of gear were replaced this year, based on member surveys. Last week saw the arrival of new elliptical, Stairmaster and leg press machines, with a chest press machine scheduled to arrive in a week or two.

1st VOICE Dinner-Dance The first annual Varadi Ovarian Initiative for Cancer Education (VOICE) Achievement Dinner-Dance was held Wednesday, September 13th at the North Hills Country Club, with over 250 people in attendance.
