Board Member Deborah Markell Kleinart is trying to market NST golf to men and women. She would like to encourage people to join the Golf Club at NST. The Towers Country Club has golf pros that are known by the members to be helpful, considerate and competent. Bob Guido, golf pro for 25 years, and Jon Morrison, assistant pro for a few years, are both well respected and well liked. They are always available to help golfers. Depending upon whether the golfer plays nine or 18 holes they may take a cart. The carts are equipped with GPS equipment, which helps the player locate the ball and learn the yardage. This assists the players to use the correct club. “When I moved here, I didn’t know anyone, but I made new friends through playing golf,” Bitetti said. “In tournaments, I met new people and made other new friends. Golfers always invite others to join them for lunch. They never leave a golfer looking for a table.” Starter Rudy Miller helps players to pair-up, although they can go out alone if they wish. Golf is a social game

and the starter helps the players to join a group if they wish to. A tournament schedule is posted in the ladies locker room and other players will be happy to ask you to join them for a game or for lunch. Eric O Neill is the head groundskeeper. He keeps the course in excellent shape, always looking beautiful. It is a tribute to his talented care. Mark Twain said, “Golf is a good walk spoiled,” but NST golfers would strongly disagree. There are a number of very good reasons to play golf. Among them are: the exercise keeps you on friendly terms with your scale, the socializing adds joy to your life, your dance card is always full, golfers are very friendly and always invite newcomers to their games, lunches, and events, and the staff is always ready to instruct and advise the players. Winston Churchill, always disappointed in his playing ability, said, “Playing golf is like chasing a quinine pill in a cow pasture.” But he never gave up. “The more you play, the better you become” is every player’s hope, but there are a number of other reasons to continue playing including the fresh air, the beautiful course, the friendly players and staff, the exercise and the ability to meet new people who become friends. Chi Chi Rodreguez said, “Golf is the most fun you can have without taking your clothes off.” Try it, you’ll like it.

athryn Bitetti has been playing golf for 35 years. She received her first golf clubs from S&H Green Stamps years ago and has been playing ever since. At first, it took four to five hours, including traveling time, to reach a local golf course. “I had to play on weekends to find the time,” she said. “I played with friends on local golf courses and paid a small fee,” she continued. “We carried our own clubs, rented our cart and had no lessons in the beginning.” Once committed to golf, she took lessons at golf schools and paid their fee. “On weekends I took individual lessons from a golf pro,” she said. “I worked on putting, using drivers, irons, whatever I needed. One lesson we concentrated on was what I was doing wrong. In golf, you are playing against yourself and I gradually improved over the years.” Now the president of the Towers Ladies Golf Association (TLGA), Bitetti enjoys the golf course at North Shore Towers and plays four to five times a week. “I’m not a long driver, but I’m a more consistent player,” she said. “I take a cart,” she said. “If I hit the ball 70 feet, I go to the ball from the cart. Putting on a green gives me good exercise.” Tuesdays are Ladies Tournaments Day, and nine-hole and 18-hole tournaments are held. Sponsored members are men and women who play on the NST golf course but do not live here. In addition to playing golf, they are able to enjoy all the amenities of the country club. The schedule of events for this spring and summer, designed to please all the golf members, follows: •The opening tournament including breakfast and lunch takes place on Tuesday, May 14th. Signing up guarantees the players a foursome that day. •Clinics with the pros are always popular. Two clinics are scheduled and a casual meal follows. •The Babes Against Cancer Golf and Card Tournaments will take place on Thursday, July 11th. Funds raised by men’s and women’s participation in these and other events, as well as generous donations from the NST community, are a commitment to assist individuals with the same illness that Babe Zaharias had. •The Member/Guest Tournament takes place on Thursday, August 8th and includes breakfast, golf, and lunch. Members pay for their guests. •Something new is occurring this year. There will be prizes in addition to the groups and individuals who come in first and second. Participants never know who gets the prize. This will occur four or five times a season in certain tournaments. •A tournament called “The Devil Made Me Do It” took place last year in October on Halloween. A “Trick or Treat Tournament” took place in October, and in November another tournament was scheduled to celebrate Thanksgiving. This was scheduled for those who don’t go south in

Chess Club Looking for You By Fred Chernow Many NST residents are careful about exercising their body–at the gym, pool, or in various classes. And that’s a good thing. Are you also interested in stimulating your brain without sweating or wearing special clothes or shoes? The NST Chess Club, “Chessmates,” welcomes new members. Organized five years ago by Dave Zolondek, Richard Domash and Dave Kossover, the group meets Thursday afternoons at 12:30 pm in the Men’s Card Room (next to the Country Club Golf Pro Shop in the VIP Room). All are welcome, men, women, and children. You may not have played chess in decades, or you may never have played. Perhaps you are a good player who would like some fun playing with an evenly matched resident. Now you can.

This fun game is known the world over for its maneuvering and strategy planning. Club Co-Presidents Richard, Dave and Dave will team you up with another fan of chess or help you lean the basic moves of the game. If you are a parent or a grandparent you can learn the game and then pass the basics on to the next generation of your family. What a wonderful legacy you will leave them. Domash remembers watching his parents play. At age 6 his father taught him chess and he is now ready to teach you. You may not reach the level of Grand Master Bobby Fisher, Garry Kasparov or Magnus Carlson, but you will be keeping your brain cells active and having fun at the same time. What Did T. rex Taste Like? By Lorraine Bertan Cultural Committee Member

or the American Museum of Natural History’s new exhibit, “T. rex: The Ultimate Predator,” T. rex has acquired a new set of clothes, feathers, which has a transforming effect on his appearance. It is now established that birds are dinosaurs, so T. rex could have tasted like chicken. Dinosaur fossils were first discovered in England, by Gideon Mantell. The Iguanodon fossils were fleshed out to emphasize their huge size at the Crystal Palace Exhibition in London, 1854. The public was enchanted with them, and so began the hunt for dinosaur fossils. This made the fossil hunters of Europe very happy, and as the American railroads opened up the west, the fossil hunters found the Hell Creek Formation, a rich field for dinosaur fossils. The competition for dinosaur fossils was fierce and gave rise to the “Bone Wars,” in which Barnum Brown was one of the most prolific fossil hunters. He is responsible for the T. rex fossil dinosaur exhibited at the David H. Koch Fossil Halls in the Ameri-

can Museum of Natural History. Barnum Brown discovered another relative of T. rex, Deinonychus, which was a star performer in the movie “Jurassic Park.” The dinosaur appeared under his stage name, “Velociraptor” in the cafeteria scene, where he is more graceful and menacing, terrifying the children. Recently, in China, an imprint of Deinonychus/Velociraptor was found showing feathers. Fossil evidence is leading to the relationship between dinosaurs and birds. The “T. rex: The Ultimate Predator” exhibit describes the anatomy of a predator, the huge skull with forwarding facing eyes, like humans, the serrated teeth shaped like scimitars, and the huge jaw which can crush bone, all excellent killing tools. The tiny arms were probably used in concert with the powerful legs to hold and crush a victim. The three walking toes, shown by fossil imprints, are shared by the birds of today, that are now classified as dinosaurs. According to annual fossil bone rings, it took T. rex about 20 years to grow to adulthood, weighing about 11,000 pounds, so it had to hunt constantly. The unusual growth rate of T. rex was probably a key to its out-

competing other predators. The exhibit is interactive and compares human and T. rex growth in a user-friendly way, as do all the interactives in the exhibit. The cast of the braincase of T. rex is on exhibit, showing the complexity of a predator’s brain. Reptiles and birds can see more colors than we humans do, and imagine how brightly colored feathers appear to them. The exhibit has an interactive where visitors can explore fossil evidence for dinosaur feathers, which could possibly be used in mating displays, species recognition, insulation, and camouflage. Another interactive includes fossil evidence describing how crocodiles and birds make sounds, and the exhibit has a playful way of describing them. Visitors can use the “Hear Me Roar” interactive to blend the sounds of birds, crocodiles, and other living animals to approximate the sounds of the roar of T. rex. Do feathers and sounds play a role in reproduction? Is it possible to find out exactly what T. rex ate? On display are “coprolites,” fossilized feces attributed to T. rex, showing the actual bones of animals consumed by T. rex.

T. rex is the star performer in this exhibit, and the stagecraft provides lots of excitement using an interactive projection wall showing T. rex in its actual environment hunting other dinosaurs. There is also a Unique Interactive Multiplayer Virtual Reality Experience, where up to three players will work together to build a bone-by-bone skeleton of T. rex similar to the one in the Saurischian Hall. Dr. Mark Norell is the curator of the “T. rex Ultimate Predator” exhibit. I am not including recommendations for places to eat in this article; you will be too busy exploring this exhibit and the actual skeleton of T. rex and its relatives on the fourth floor Saurischian Dinosaur Hall.

University Club Discusses Ethel Merman By Judith Tane

t a meeting of the North Shore Towers University Club on Thursday, March 28th, John Kenrick, our popular maven of musical theater, presented a program featuring the American legend Ethel Merman. Opening with a photograph of one of Merman’s last appearances on a “Best of Broadway” special, where she was resplendent in a sparkly dress and a bouffant hairdo, Kenrick took the rapt audience back to the early days of the performer’s career. Ethel Agnes Zimmermann was born in 1908 in Astoria, Queens. Her family was of German and Scottish ancestry. Her father, Edward, was an accountant and her mother, Agnes, was a teacher. With a thrilling voice, which became evident when she was very young, she sang in a church choir and seemed destined for fame as she stood outside the Astoria Film Studios watching well-known stars come and go. Her parents recognized her talent, but insisted that she gain some employable

skills, so she studied shorthand and typing, which she enjoyed and excelled in at Bryant High School. Her first job was with the BK Auto Vacuum Booster Factory in Long Island City. She also sang at various clubs, earning $7-10 a night. She occasionally sang on stage between film showings at local movie houses and was heard by a Broadway producer, who arranged for her to meet George and Ira Gershwin at their penthouses in Manhattan. The young singer was given a part in The Gershwins’ new play, “Girl Crazy.” She had 10 lines and two songs. One of those songs was “I’ve Got Rhythm.” George Gershwin told her, “Never go near a singing teacher and never forget your shorthand.” She never did have a singing teacher and never forgot her shorthand. The famous opera star, Lily Pons, upon hearing Merman’s amazing voice, asked her, “Where do you breathe from?” Merman starred in Cole Porter’s “Anything Goes” in 1934 with Billy Gaxton, who remained a lifelong friend. Kenrick showed a television broadcast, made years after Gaxton died, with Merman and Sylvia Fine Kaye. A surprise guest was to sing

the title song with Merman. It turned out to be a tuxedo-clad Rock Hudson, who did a great job while Fine Kaye played the piano accompaniment. Many musicals followed for Merman, including “Red, Hot and Blue” with Jimmy Durante, “Alexander’s Ragtime Band,” “DuBarry Was A Lady” with Bert Lahr, “Something For The Boys,” “Annie Get Your Gun,” “Call Me Madam,” “Gypsy” and “Hello Dolly.” When some of the plays were made into movies, Merman wanted to reprise her stage roles, but as often happens in show business, she sadly lost out to popular film stars. Particular disappointments for her were the film versions of “Annie Get Your Gun,” in which the starring role went to Betty Hutton, and “Gypsy,” which was given to Rosalind Russell. Merman was in a number of movies in the 1930s and 40s, but is perhaps best remembered for her cameo roles in “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World” and “Airplane.” Along the way, there were Tony Awards, concerts, TV shows and guest appearances. Merman was a performer who strove for perfection, and once she found it, she never varied from what she thought was the best

she could be. Her amazing, powerful voice was immediately recognizable all over the world. John Kenrick told the audience that his students (he is a theater professor at New York University) rarely know anything about Broadway before “The Lion King,” but they all seem to have heard of Ethel Merman. Merman had close friendships, romantic relationships, and marriages with several men. Her first serious attachment was to Sherman Billingsley of “The Stork Club.” He was already married, but showered her with gifts. She was married to William Smith from 1940-1941; to Robert Levitt from 1941-1952, with whom she had a daughter, Ethel; to Robert Six from 19531960, with whom she had a son, Robert; and to Ernest Borgnine for just 32 days in 1964. (A quick marriage but a long story.) Merman co-wrote two memoirs, “Who Could Ask For Anything More” in 1955 and “Merman” in 1978. She died on February 14, 1974, of an incurable brain tumor. She was 76 years old. She lived a full, successful life and will remain an icon of the American musical theater.

NST Cares for the Needy By Beverly Bord The North Shore Towers Political Action Committee/Community Outreach Committee chaired by Felice Hannah is reaching out to the needy in the community. “North Shore Towers Cares for the Needy,” in conjunction with Commonpoint Queens Y, will collect non-food items monthly to be distributed to the needy in the community who lack essential everyday items. The collected items to be donated for the month of May will be new towels, bar soap, bath and shower products. Climate Change By Tiana Wolkiewicz Climate change is a very big problem in our world today. This is demonstrated with a change in global or regional climate patterns. There are many things we can do to help the long-term change to decrease or stay where it is at so it does not go up and damage our homes any more than it has already done. We use cars, eat meat, and use factories every day, and we all probably can’t imagine our life without these. There was a time before us for thousands of years when people were not lucky enough to have these things, but they are ruining our planet, so we should use them less or only when needed. Since the Earth helps us every day, providing us with a place to live, we should help it in return. This is why we need to fix this massive problem. Climate change causes many problems, including global warming. Global warming is the gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth’s atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide (CO2), chlorofluorocarbons, and other pollutants. All of these gases summed up are called greenhouse gases. The one that is referred to the most is CO2. If we use factories less and make things by hand the pollutants coming out of factories would decrease, which would also help decrease global warming. Climate change also causes the ice caps and glaciers to melt. This is a big problem because we are also hurting animals who live in cold environments. When this ice melts it is also causing sea levels to rise. If sea levels rise this can cause flooding, which can kill, hurt, and ruin living things. Those of us living on Long Island should think about that what they know and love can be flooded one day, and many generations from now people might not even know how spectacular this place is. It might not even be on a map. This might just put it into perspec-

tive what the world might be like many years from now. Ocean acidification is also a huge phenomenon caused by climate change. This affects ocean life and is caused by CO2. There have been so many fish species that become extinct because of this. Some people believe that coral is useless and does not really help us, but it does. It puts a barrier between the waves and the shoreline so it breaks the wave up so and we do not receive as much of an impact. Just imagine how much harder Hurricane Sandy (another phenomenon) would have been if we did not have coral. Long Islanders love to go to the beach in the summer. Without coral, we might not be able to swim because we would get killed by the waves. Fish also help with climate change, so why would we want them to die from ocean acidification? If we eat less meat coming from farm animals we help stop climate change. Farm animals produce a lot of CO2 when they pass gas. Fish don’t, so if we eat more fish it helps because they do not have to produce more farm animals. So, we should stop eating as much meat. Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is a gas that hurts our atmosphere. It is colorless and odorless. It is has a chemical formula of CO2, which means one carbon atom bonded to two oxygen atoms. This gas is produced by fossil fuels. There are many things that we can do to help combat climate change. We can eat less meat, walk or ride a bike instead of a vehicle that burns fossil fuels, and don’t use factories as much. No, it’s North Shore Towers own resident celebrity look-alike, Nathan Cantos. The striking resemblance is so strong that the Boston Globe even featured him in a profile in 1974. In an article titled, “Great to look like Kissinger,” writer Candice Goodier began “Voluptuous women send him messages in German on cocktail napkins. Waiters whisk him through waiting for lines magically to empty tables. His secretary calls him, ‘Henry,’ and his wife teases him about a little black book containing the number of an Iranian belly dancer…Nathan Contos has decided that looking like Henry Kissinger is not without its advantages.” Although flattered by the comparison, Cantos claims, “Without my glasses, I don’t look like him at all.” It helps that both men have worn similar horn-rimmed glasses, are the same age, Jewish, and, as the Boston Globe noted, “impeccable dressers.” Similar heights and weights completed the resemblance.
