Steven Kirschner. NST, but when it occurs, it can be a frightening ordeal. Some directors think it would be a good idea if each resident supplied a set of keys to a neighbor and then notified a close relative, such as a son or daughter, and tell them who has the keys. If their relative attempts to call the NST resident and gets no response, the neighbor can be called and asked to check on the residents and make sure they have no problems. Kirschner’s background as a mayor and as the representative of employees, in addition to his experience in handling complicated financial matters, makes him uniquely qualified to be an asset to the Bd. of Directors. “North Shore Towers is a great place to live,” he said. “I just want to make it better.” Kirschner concluded, “It’s a great pleasure to live here, and we want everyone to know it.”

orn and raised in Brooklyn, Steve Kirschner is a graduate of Brooklyn Technical High School, the State University at Albany, and Brooklyn Law School. He served as an Assistant District Attorney for four years and has been in private practice for 42 years, specializing in criminal defense and labor law and represented the NYC Sanitation Workers Union’s 6,000 members for 40 years. He lived in Briarwood, near the courts. In 1979 he moved to Russell Gardens, which was a short commute to his office in Great Neck. Kirschner always believed in contributing to his neighborhood, and his neighbors appreciated his efforts. Eventually, he was elected Mayor of Russell Gardens and he held that office for six years. After a short break when he served as Deputy Mayor, his reputation was so positive that he was asked to run again and served for another six years. He enjoyed his community and appreciated his location, close to Manhattan and Long Island. He appreciated the positive qualities of the Great Neck area, which has nine villages, including Great Neck, Great Neck Plaza, Russell Gardens, Kensington, Great Neck Estates, Thomaston, Kings Point, Lake Success, and Saddle Rock. Before becoming mayor, Kirschner was active in civic associations, and became a trustee in Russel Gardens. He served in that position for 12 years before being elected mayor. When he thought of moving to North Shore Towers, he compared it to Russell Gardens. The Towers has about 3,200 residents and Russell Gardens has 1,200. While Russell Gardens has a traditional government, North Shore Towers is a private complex bound by rules and regulations imposed by the city and state. Russell Gardens board passes its own laws and has its own building inspectors. The building inspectors that serve NST are from New York City. There are other differences as well. Kirschner said the amenities at the Towers as a private complex are a greater responsibility for its board than similar amenities are to the government at Russell Gardens. Russell Gardens has commercial properties and retail establishments in the village and collects taxes, which is a great responsibility for their board. North Shore Towers is a unique complex with major selling points. It has an 18-hole golf course, two pools,

one outside, one inside, it has its generators and the Arcade, which has vendors for the residents. Major plans are always being considered by the board for the benefit of the residents. NST has a general manager and a board of directors. The board sets policy and direction, and the manger implements them, along with his other responsibilities. Meanwhile, Russell Gardens has four trustees and a mayor. The mayor is responsible for the daily operations of the community. At the Towers, the directors serve as sounding boards for complaints. They respond themselves or forward their complaints to management. “We cannot always please everyone,” Kirschner said. If a complaint is brought to the board, the director responsible for the issue will respond. Or the director can tell the resident that he will look into the matter, and when he has the facts that he needs will get back to him. “There is nothing like NST anywhere else,” Kirschner said. “The builders always had the residents in mind.” When it was first built, the towers were filled with renters. Gradually, the apartments were converted to cooperatives. Part of the complex is in Nassau County and the rest is in Queens. Kirschner is Chairman of the House and Grounds Committee and is discussing with his team ideas to secure more parking spaces without losing too much greenery. “That’s one problem that we are dealing with at present,” he said. “In the VIP multi-purpose room, dinner is served three nights a week and on the other nights, entertainment is provided,” he said. The 92Y discussions are one of the favorite programs shareholders enjoy. Kirschner said, “My obligation is to get more available quality programs for the residents.” “One idea we’re discussing is having a chip in the NST card,” he continued. “Currently, strangers can gain access to the floors; having a chip in the card that all residents carry will make them feel safer.” The House and Grounds team is investigating the cost of such chips and will bring the information to the board to consider. “All of the volunteers that serve on the various NST committees have as their goals improving life at North Shore Towers,” Kirschner continued. “We’re considering having more open meetings, having more events that are appropriate for the many single residents to attend, and having activities suitable for families to attend. Also, events that our children and grandchildren in their 20s, 30s and 40s would like might be a good marketing idea. It lets the world know what North Shore Towers has to offer.” A capacitor blew out at the co-op not long ago, causing a blackout, but calling ConEd was not needed because NST has its own generators. The board is also debating if some modifications to the elevators might be a good idea because some residents can be caught inside of an elevator when a blackout occurs. That would be a rare event at

By Howard Arkin Having lived at North Shore Towers for the past two years, I have discovered that the main topic of conversation is food, specifically restaurant food. If Zagat were to resume publication of their restaurant guide, I’m sure that the residents of North Shore Towers would be more than happy to put their two cents in. With Northern Boulevard to the north and Union Turnpike and Hillside Avenue to the south, we have access to many of the finest restaurants as well as some of the most reasonably priced restaurant in Queens and Long Island. The North Shore Towers Men’s Club entertainment committee, led by Jerry Siegel, has chosen many great eating establishments for our club lunches and dinners. I would say that my favorite restaurant has been Mizumi, which is an Asian buffet in Little Neck. If you intend to go there I recommend you eat very little before you go so you have room to take full advantage. The prices are reasonable but the trip may cost you 3000 to 4000 calories. Another neighborhood favorite that cannot escape recognition is the Jolly Fisherman in the village of Roslyn. With a $30 lunch special the Men’s Club has found its way there quite often. On many occasions, the North Shore Towers presence is great enough to feel as though you are in the VIP room. I have found that club members often have differing opinions. A few days ago I was enthusiastically telling Harold Hershman how much I liked going to Bruce’s in Great Neck and he wholeheartedly disagreed. C’est la vie. One of our club’s star critics is Al Sprung. Sprung is perhaps the only man who has sent his spareribs back to the kitchen at Pearl East, not once, but twice

during the same dinner. He can be tough. Last week I took an informal poll among the members regarding their restaurant preferences, both expensive and inexpensive. Too numerous to mention all of them, two that appeared most often on people’s lists were Toscano in Williston Park and Chef Wang in New Hyde Park. I have to admit that I do not think I would make a very good restaurant critic, illustrated by the fact that I like almost every restaurant that I go to. I am surprised by the look of astonishment on the faces of some people when I tell them that I frequent Burger King (using coupons) and have even been known to venture into White Castle. The next time that I mention either of these two establishments to someone I’ll be sure to have some Digitalis on hand. Before moving to North Shore Towers I lived close by in Hollis Hills. Much of my eating out was in diners, specifically the Blue Bay Diner and the Bayside Diner. If you’re in the market for diner food these two are both worth the short trip. The next two club dinners are scheduled to be at Opa and Jonathan’s. I hope to see you there.

Community Affairs Committee By Vicki Mazel Board member Dr. Stanley Goldsmith has announced the formation of the Community Affairs Committee, previously the Political Action Committee under the chairmanship of deceased board member Felice Hannah. In spotlighting the new goals for the future, Dr. Goldsmith cited issues relevant to the residents as a priority. The Committee plans to develop programs dealing with residents’concerns; security, real estate taxes, medical issues, and identity theft

to name a few. A continued working relationship with Community Board 13 is also a goal. In changing the focus of the Committee, Dr. Goldsmith and committee members have been meeting to prioritize the needs of the residents, and want to keep avenues of communication open. Look for announcements of the meetings, which will be on lighted information boards in all buildings, and in the arcade outside the coffee shop. Releases will also be sent to local newspapers.

Towers Tales: Ed Nord South Africa to NST By Fred Chernow

d Nord grew up in Johannesburg where he attended medical school. After graduation, he moved to Israel for 10 years and served as a doctor in the Israeli Air Force. He was offered a research fellowship at UCLA in his specialty, Nephrology, which deals with kidney disease. His career took off and soon he was offered the chairmanship of the Nephrology Department at Stony Brook University on Long Island. He accepted and spent 30 years there, before coming to North Shore Towers. Many of you recognize him as a frequent visitor to our pool in the summer and as a regular chess player in the Men’s Card Room. Where did you grow up? The son of a Lithuanian father and a Dutch mother, both of whom had escaped Hitler’s Europe to start a life in South Africa, I was born and grew up in apartheid Johannesburg. The Jewish community comprised a tightly knit group of immigrants, secular

rather than religious, and from a young age, I belonged a vibrant, active Zionist youth movement, HABONIM, literally “The Builders,” which shaped my world views and set me on my life’s path. HABONIM summer camp was an annual ritual. The sleeper train that pulled out of Johannesburg’s Central Station on a threenight/two-day journey to the campsite near Cape Town led to instant bonding. The 2-3 day hikes, sleeping under the stars and bathing in the nearby lake were unforgettable experiences. This Jewish immigrant neighborhood I grew up in was Sydenham East, Johannesburg. What was life like in Israel? After graduating high school I was drafted into the South African Defense Force and served a year in South West Africa, now known as Nambia. Upon completion, I entered medical school (University of the Witwatersrand, or WITS), a six-year stint with no undergraduate requirement as per the British system. As I came to learn in later life, this was an amazing experience, with diseases not commonly encountered in western medicine. After completing a year of internship, inspired by my expe-

rience and involvement in HABONIM, and armed with a newly minted medical diploma, I married and made aliyah to Israel, where I spent 10 years (the 70s), and where my two kids, Galit and Yaniv, were

born. I continued my medical training, was subsequently drafted and served as a Medical Officer in the Israeli Air force, and for a few years living in Northern Sinai, in a Continued on Page 11

By Fred Chernow This compelling story is about 13 Jewish citizens of the small Bavarian village of Lichtenfels in southern Germany and involves Building Three resident Werner Nass. His grandfather’s driver’s license, dated 1935, was found with a dozen others. It had been confiscated from Manfred Goldmeier, Werner’s maternal grandfather when he was arrested 80 years ago along with the other Jewish citizens. All had lived peacefully in Lichtenfels for generations before their arrest. The licenses were discovered in 2017 in an abandoned file cabinet in an old government building in Lichtenfels, where Werner grew up. A history teacher at the local high school asked for them because he thought it would be a challenging project for his students to find the descendants of the license owners and return the aging documents. The students, none of them Jewish, worked diligently and enthusiastically on this project for the next nine months, until they were able to locate the family descendants of each of the 13 individuals. The students explored local archives, ship manifests, databases at Yad Vashem, Jerusalem, and Ellis Island, as well as other internet sources. This led to Werner’s cousin and eventually to Werner at NST. An attractive exhibit was prepared consisting of 13 large vertical panels, one for each family. Each panel features an enlargement of the original driver’s license and photos of the homes the people

Towers Tales: Ed Nord South Africa to NST Continued from Page 5 beautiful coastal town, Yamit. During this period, I also provided medical services to the local population and was the visiting physician at three kibbutzim in the area. Perhaps the highlight of my years in Israel was the few days that Egyptian President Anwar Sadat spent visiting Israel. Amongst other things, it was surreal watching on national TV as the Israeli Military Band practiced the Egyptian National Anthem. Probably the toughest time was the 1973 Yom Kippur War. In the early days of fighting it was unclear whether our country would survive. My infant daughter spent many nights with her mom in the local bomb shelter. What became your medical specialty? After completing my military training in Israel, I embarked on a career in Nephrology, which deals with all aspects of kidney diseases. As part of this, I was offered a three-year Research Fellowship at

UCLA, so I moved my family to Los Angeles where we spent most of the 1980s. My 7-year old daughter, coming from a small settlement town in Northern Sinai, was amazed by the size of Los Angeles and wanted to know “where the fence around Los Angeles” was. I had two great mentors at UCLA, and after completion of my training I was offered a faculty position. By the end of the 80s my career had taken off and I was offered the position of Chairman of Nephrology at Stony Brook University School of Medicine on Long Island, where I spent the next 30 years. During this time I ran an active NIH (National Institute of Health) funded laboratory and oversaw all aspects of Nephrology that included an active intensive care practice, kidney dialysis, and kidney transplantation. I enjoyed academic life, had the opportunity to act as a consultant to NIH, served as President of the New York Society of Nephrology, and was in-

By Beverly Bord Beverly Bord and Arlene Greenwood, chairpersons of the project North Shore Towers Cares for the Needy in partnership with Commonpoint Queens, proudly announce that in February 2020 we celebrate our one-year anniversary. We are one year old and going strong due to the generous and continuing support of the residents of North Shore Towers. The very first flyers displayed on the brown bins in the mailroom in each building one year ago requested a donation of dental products. And now, one year later, February 2020, the displayed flyers on the bins are again asking for the same dental items--toothpaste, toothbrushes, dental floss, mouthwash, etc. We are excited to report that the bins have been again filling up quickly with these items for February. Judith Vladimir, Senior Director of Development at Samuel Field Y, Commonpoint Queens, has informed me that the March collection is new and gently used dress shirts and ties for My Brother’s Keeper (MBK), a program offered at the Martin Van Buren High School in Queens Village. The dress shirts and ties are for young men for interviews or the workplace. The goal of My Brother’s Keeper

program is to change the narrative especially for boys and young men by closing and eliminating the opportunity gaps they face and helping them to reach their full potential. The MBK program provides programming, resources, and mentoring for young men to reduce chronic absenteeism, improve academic achievement, and nurture leadership development. This program is sponsored through the generosity and valued partnership with NYC Community Schools. Vladimir writes, “In addition to the efforts above we work to place participants in internships in a variety of high-growth areas. We have found that the majority of students do not have appropriate clothing for interviews or the workplace. We are, therefore, reaching out to our partners to donate new and gently used dress shirts and ties to help the young men reach their goals.” Keep in mind the following schedule: February: Dental products such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, floss, mouthwash. March: New and gently used dressed shirts and ties. April: New cleaning supplies (sponges, wipes, cleaning cloths, gloves). We are asking that all donations are appropriate for what is specified on the flyers atop the bins in the mailbox rooms. Thank you again to residents of NST for your continuing support of this project.

We have a blended family of four kids and now 10 grandchildren, after the recent arrival of baby Sage. Jill has a Master’s degree in Counseling and volunteered at the Suffolk County Response Hotline Crisis Center. Many of the volunteers she worked with remain her dear friends. She also sold precious metal alloys used in dentistry to dental laboratories. Later, she became certified in phlebotomy and was the laboratory administrator for a hematologist in Huntington. Before coming to NST she was an ophthalmic technician in the office of a local ophthalmologist. Where else have you traveled? We’ve done a lot of traveling over the past 25 years. On several occasions, we have gone with an outfit called University at Sea which contracted me to teach continued medical education. On one occasion the group comprised a group of Australian physicians who were delightful. We have traveled to Israel and ancient Petra in Jor-

NST Women’s Club: Coll’s On A Roll By Vicki Mazel

N

oted lecturer James Coll will be the featured speaker for the Woman’s Club on Wednesday, March 25th in the lower card room at 7:15 pm. Returning by popular demand, Coll’s lectures on constitutional government at the federal, state, and local levels are always enthusiastically received by the audience. Coll’s program for the evening will be on “The Real Alexander Hamilton.” Statesman, military commander, banker, economist, and the first Secretary of the Treasury, the Hamilton lecture will no doubt stand alongside Coll’s other fascinating presentations for which he is known. Coll comes from a family dedicated to public service. He has a rich background of participation in recent major historic events. Starting as a policeman, he won awards for heroism with the New York Police for his leadership in the 2010 US Airways flight landing on the Hudson River. In addition to being Cop of The Year, he also assisted in the rescue operations in Texas during Hurricane Harvey. Continuing his education, Coll became

an adjunct professor of American and Constitutional history at Hofstra University and Nassau Community College. His background has also given him opportunities to become an adviser on TV shows such as Law and Order, Blue Bloods, Third Watch, etc. The program is open to Women’s Club members only. Cinema Club–More Bang For The Buck This month’s meeting of the Cinema Club took on the challenge of reviewing three films: “Parasite,” “The Good Liar,” and “Jojo Rabbit.” Noting that all three films dealt with controversial issues and historic events, Dr. Nurit Israeli’s presentation on “Parasite” contributed greatly towards helping the audience clarify the goals of the filmmaker. Discussion leader Vicki Mazel provided background information that addressed filmmaking as the international industry and the coincidences and working relationships that exist globally. The discussion also focused on the critic’s reviews of these films that the audience disagreed with. A tongue-in-cheek suggestion was the introduction of a new rating system that would include “SG” for senior guidance advised since many of the disputed opinions appeared to be more generational. It’s a far cry from Hollywood

to North Shore Towers. Many of the films screened at the Towers Cinema have been nominated for numerous awards including Oscars, Golden Globes, and Screen Actors Guild to name a few. We are fortunate in the selection of films that have been distributed to our theater and strongly urge all residents to utilize the theater regularly to ensure that we don’t become another statistic in the rash of movie houses that are closing throughout the country. Our Cinema Club movie review programs are open to all residents and we welcome your participation. Notices are posted at the movie theater, the coffee shop restaurant, and in all the mailrooms. Super Bowl in Coleridge softball game. Can we believe him? All that Ron Levin could remember was dodging cars in stickball games on Schenectady Avenue in Crown Heights in Brooklyn. A few of the men recalled a game called “Johnny on the pony.” I’ll let you Google that one. Approaching halftime the men seemed to be losing steam and getting a bit tired. I figured that the halftime show starring Jennifer Lopez and Shakira might keep them going, but by the third quarter, about half of them were back in their apartments. Too many corned beef and pastrami sandwiches can certainly take its toll. The game, however, turned out to be one of the more exciting ones in the Super Bowl’s 54-year history. The Kansas City Chiefs managed to score 21 points in the fourth quarter setting an all-time 4th quarter scoring high and went on to defeat the San Francisco 49ers with a final score of 31-20. The next Super Bowl will be played on February 7, 2021, in Tampa, Florida. The two big questions that we won’t know the answers to until then are “what teams will be competing?” and “can Iavaronne’s wrest the catering contract from Ben’s Deli?”

By Howard Arkin About 40 men began to gather in Building Three’s Coleridge room on Sunday, February 2nd at 6:00 pm to watch a football game and to eat. Yes, it was Superbowl time. For the second year in a row, Ben’s Delicatessen was the recipient of the Men’s Club catering contract. It was the desire of the club’s president Steve Auerbach to keep costs at a minimum. Volunteers were requested to pick up the sodas, juices, water and numerous other items. The lucky volunteers turned out to be Bob Mark and me. Auerbach gave us explicit instructions regarding the prices he thought we should pay. We thriftily purchased soda at Shoprite (five two-liter bottles for $5) and decided to disregard the other prices Auerbach had told us to pay. During the game, I had the opportunity to speak to some club members about sports and asked them if they might have some recollections about their athletic glories. Not too many did, yet Jerry Mantell’s stint in the Brooklyn Dodgers farm system and Rocco Iamanna’s table tennis prowess were notable. Al Sprung did recall getting a winning hit in a Sunset Park playground

Pleasures of the NST Spectrum TV Service By Lorraine Bertan NST Culture Committee

he weather outside may be frightful, and staying home watching TV is delightful, especially when the North Shore Towers Spectrum account allows us many interesting program choices from HBO, Showtime, and Spectrum on demand. Spectrum’s “Man Hunt: Deadly Games Series” focuses on Richard Jewell, the security guard, who was the central character of the 1996 Olympic Centennial Bombing in Atlanta Georgia. The Spectrum 10part series appeared two months after the release of the movie, “Richard Jewell,” which tells the story of his discovery of the bomb, the resulting public admiration and his eventual accusation as the bomber. In both the movie and the TV series, the character of Richard Jewell is portrayed emphasizing his respect and admiration for law enforcement, and his desire to help people. He is an unsophisticated man, living with his mother, and allows himself to be manipulated by his accusers. When the bomb goes off, the FBI, ATF and local police agencies become involved, and

the media becomes the chronicler of the investigation. The bomb killed two people and injured over 100 people, and the law enforcement and media attacks nearly destroyed the lives of Richard Jewell and his mother for three months, as he became the suspected bomber who was looking to become a hero. The actual bomber, Eric Rudolph, carried out three explosions after the Olympic bombing, in Georgia and Alabama; all are considered examples of domestic terrorism. The Spectrum series provides a compelling description of the cooperation of the various government agencies to track Rudolph down in May 2003, several years after the Olympic Centennial bombing. He is now in prison for life; the same prison occupied by the UNA bomber, Ted Kaczynski. Curb Your Enthusiasm On a lighter note, HBO introduces Season 10 of the “Curb Your Enthusiasm”, Larry David programs. Episode one opens in early February 2020, and David replies to New Year greetings with an acerbic “Too late.” Continuing in this somewhat unpleasant atmosphere, David spends time at a cocktail party, trying to

catch hors d’oeuvres, but inappropriately touching the female caterer and provoking a lawsuit. The jokes are simple but delivered with style and wit. He has played this role for many years, and while he proudly proclaims his misanthropic nature, his colleagues are happy to insult him and continue the dialogue. David was a writer for “Saturday Night Live” in 1982 and in 1989 Jerry Seinfeld asked him to help develop the sitcom “Seinfeld”, which debuted in 1989. You may recognize Larry David from his “Saturday Night Live” appearance as Bernie Sanders, since 2016. For the fans of the late Kirk Douglas,

HBO has a large library of Kirk Douglas movies, and they are available for a rental fee of $2.99. “Lust for Life,” “Spartacus,” “Champion,” “Devil’s Disciple,” “Gunfight at the OK Corral,” “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea,” the “Bad and the Beautiful,” and “Paths of Glory” are part of a larger collection. This could make a nice evening entertainment remembering a very talented actor. To access Spectrum Originals on Demand go to Guide, and click on 2010. Pages From Our Past New Food Service Provider Chosen For the second year in a row, the NST Country Club had a new food service vendor, the owners of Garden City Park store Bagels & BBQ. Owner Dennis Pariti planed to have meet and greet gatherings for each building before the official opening and pledged to “push the envelope” on whatever they can to enhance the membership’s dining experience. This was to include barbecues and outdoor bistro tables, with more seating located inside. MARCH 2015 The Road to 2015 The New Year was already transitional for NST, featuring leases signed in the previous week with new operators of the restaurant and movie theater. Theater renovations are already completed, VIP Room facilities are awaiting approval, and a major restaurant upgrade is planned. The year also highlighted the celebration of the co-op’s 40th anniversary, and a new online presence will include an updated website and Facebook page. In addition, Country Club dues were to be increased for the first time in six years by $50. “This has been a very tough year so far,” Bd. President Mort Gitter said. “A lot of major things have been started, but everything has come through according to plan so far.” Something New Is Cooking Something new is cooking at the North Shore Towers Restaurant, now the third local diner owned and operated by Spiros and Buffy Dimas. He said that so many residents of the Towers came to ask him to put in a bid for the restaurant that he already feels very comfortable and like they belong. “We’ll make them proud, make sure they get good service, good food and add value to their residence,” Dimas pledged. “We will try to run a first-class restaurant.”

MARCH 2011 NYC Transfer Fees Exempted Flip Taxes at North Shore Towers and other NYC coops and condominiums were exempted from recent Federal regulations in March, avoiding a potentially negative impact on property values. The recent Federal Housing Finance Agency’s (FHFA) proposed rules would have prohibited Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and Federal Home Loan Banks from purchasing mortgages in buildings where there is a Flip Tax. Most NYC buildings have such a tax, or Transfer Fee, where sellers–and sometimes buyers–pay the building when an apartment is sold. The money is used to maintain and improve the property. Capital Improvements Timeline Announced There was a lot of action predicted around the Towers, with many contracted projects scheduled to start at the same time, including Ramp three, the front entrance rejuvenation, the front plaza, and the chimney. NYC’s Record January Snowfall With 19 more inches dumped on New York City on Wednesday, January 26 and Thursday, January 27, a record previously set in 1925 was officially broken. Citywide, ambulances, and subways ground to a halt, but Towers residents once again were able to stay toasty warm in their apartments and venture downstairs to the arcade without shoveling. This marked the fourth storm of over four inches that season, and the ninth day of over an inch of snow.
