Terry Feit Building Three Upon graduating from Pace University, Terry Feit spent 53 years in the textile industry. “Being involved in sales and sales management has taught me how to work with people and negotiate business situations,” Feit said. He has twice served on both the House and Grounds and Special Projects committees and is on the Event Committee of the Men’s Club and the Camera Club. “Maintaining NST as an excellent place to live with all of its amenities is essential,” he continued. “Daily maintenance is very important, as well as improving the appearance and keeping up with the latest technology.” If elected, his plans for the future include addressing drafty windows and providing additional handicap parking spots. He also stressed the need for cell service in the garage, as well as an electric car charger. Feit said his accomplishments have included: the walking path on the golf course, vouchers for guest parking instead of a $10 charge, and guest parking in lane one instead of the west gate area. “My motto is shareholder first,” Feit said. “If you want someone who is an activist and thinks out of the box, then I am your candidate.”

So far, almost $13 million has been generated for the club as a result, and every new resident and sub-tenant is now a member of the club. This has eliminated significant increases in country club dues. Goldstein also chaired the GAP committee for two years, which upgraded exercise equipment in the club. The pools, both indoor and out, were structurally repaired and enhanced during that time. “Our complex has always been a unique, premier community. We have maintained our fiscal integrity while continually improving our infrastructure and visible areas,” she continued. “And now we have a new image, that of being proactive. That’s because of you–you voted to make our community smoke free in all the interiors of our buildings. You voted for it; you made it happen, and now we are the face for getting it done. We live in a healthy environment.” “I have the energy and determination to continue serving our community, our home. With your support and vote, I will,” she concluded.

Steven Kirschner Building Three Steven Kirschner would bring his legal and administrative experience to the North Shore Towers Bd. of Directors. He served as President of the Russell Gardens (Great Neck) Homeowners Association and was responsible for managing and creating the budget for the association’s facilities, including the pool, tennis courts and park. He was also elected as trustee, and for 12 years was elected as Mayor of The Village of Russell Gardens, Great Neck, responsible for creating and implementing the village budget, negotiating union contracts and the administration of the day-to-day operation of the village. A graduate of Brooklyn Technical High School, the State University at Albany and Brooklyn Law School, Kirschner served as Assistant District Attorney for four years, prosecuting predominantly narcotics and fraud matters immediately following admission to the bar. He has been in private practice for 42 years, specializing in criminal defense and labor law and representing the NYC Sanitation Workers Union (6,000 members) for 40 years. “My background both as the Mayor/

employer and as the representative of employees, in addition to my experience in handling complicated financial matters, has resulted in my acquiring unique skills which would be valuable as a director of the board,” he said.

Bob Ricken Building Two Bob Ricken has been a resident of the Towers for 23 years. A school administrator and author, he served as Principal and Superintendent of the Mineola School District for 22 years and as an Interim Superintendent in six other Long Island districts when they had a crisis in leadership and/or finances. He is a senior Adjunct Professor at LI University, C.W. Post and teaches future school leaders budgeting, negotiations, and management. As President of the North Shore Towers Board for five years, he said he was proud of the fact that all residents’ letters and concerns were brought to the board as the second item on every agenda. He believes the fact that there was no maintenance or country club increase during his presidency is largely responsible for the co-op’s apartment prices being the highest in NST history. “The fact that our reserve funds tripled from $6 million to $20 million during this period was a great accomplishment,” he said. He also praised his fellow board members for these remarkable achievements. Ricken explained that he was present at every board meeting for nine years, including his years as Chairperson of the Finance Committee, Country Club Committee, and five years as president. He also wrote a monthly letter to residents informing them of all board actions, as well as columns for both community newspapers. The subtitle of his last book is, “How to be a Compassionate and Decisive Leader.” It has recently been translated into Chinese.

Martin Schwartzman Building One Martin A. Schwartzman, CPCU, said he would like to make a commitment to provide his extensive financial, regulatory and business Continued on Page 6

Meet the Bd. of Directors Candidates Continued from Page 4 experiences to the North Shore Towers Board of Directors. “I believe that my experience will greatly benefit the residents of North Shore Towers,” he said. Schwartzman graduated from Hofstra University with a BBA in Accounting and is the owner of SBL Solutions LLC, a company providing insurance and regulatory and consulting services for a variety of domestic and international clients. Before retiring from Government Service, he was the Senior Advisor to the Superintendent of the New York State Department of Financial Services. The department is the supervisor of all insurance companies in New York, all New York State-chartered depository institutions and the majority of United States-based branches and agencies of foreign banking institutions. In 2010 he was appointed First Deputy Superintendent of the NYS Insurance Department. In that role, he was second in command of the department, overseeing the deputy superintendents of the department, as well as the operation of the agency. Before that, he served as the Deputy Superintendent for Strategic Planning and Market Initiatives, meeting the needs of consumers and industry.

Howard Teitelbaum Building One Howard Teitelbaum served 10 years as President of the Hamlet Condominium, the largest Condo in Nassau County. Afterward, he founded Community Property Management. His company managed and consulted with more than 57 co-ops and condos over the next 21 years. His experience includes project feasibility studies, project management, negotiating bank loans, running reserve studies, preparing bid specifications, analyzing contractor bids, and offering sound solutions to problems. After graduating from Brooklyn College, and attending the Bernard Baruch School of Business, he entered the world of business. Teitelbaum founded and operated six companies. “I wish to share my experience and expertise with this wonderful community I have been pleased to call home for 16 years,” he said. During his condo/co-op management career, he contributed articles to trade

newspapers and magazines, and became a “go-to-expert” and received expert witness status from Nassau County District Court in disputes between owners and their respective condo or co-op boards. When he retired from the management business, he became the “Condo Co-op Coach,” offering advice to buyers, owners, and boards. He continues to believe in selfmanagement for small to mid-sized communities. His coaching was appreciated by those who came to better understand life in a structured community with by-laws, rules, and a governing board. “I love living here with my wife, Paula Held,” he continued. “NST is a wonderful blend of people of various ages, backgrounds, and interests, and has the amenities to serve everyone. I wish to once again bring my experience, expertise, and talent to the NST Board and residents. Four years ago, I solved our parking dilemma without any cost to our treasury or assessments to

our shareholders.” Teitelbaum added, “My ability to analyze issues and offer viable solutions, made me a valuable asset to the many boards I served. I am creative, assertive, and an independent voice of reason. I am an excellent candidate to serve on the board of North Shore Towers once again. This is what I did for others, and this is what I want to do again for us.” Stating that the co-op is a $50 million business, he continued, “We need more business-minded men and women to serve on our board to help us avoid making big business mistakes that have happened in the past. We’ve got some big decisions to make this year. Who do you want on your board to help make them? I want to be there and lead the way when its crunch time. If I have earned your respect and confidence and am fortunate enough to be elected, I will make you proud of your decision.”

Edna Greene Continued from Page 5 in the city. An opportunity opened up, and I began teaching nursery school at Temple Israel of Jamaica. A few years later, I became the director. After a while, I wanted a change. I missed my affinity for numbers. I then worked in an accountant’s office and enjoyed it very much. Volunteer work was my favorite career. I just started my 18th year as treasurer of Hillcrest Jewish Center. I’ve been involved in that temple for almost 50 years. I participated in the first Adult Bar Mitzvah Class. Besides being a life member, I have served as chairperson for several committees. One committee that made a big impact on my life, and that of the temple, was the Egalitarian Committee. It took several years for us to transition into an Egalitarian Congregation, where men and women participate equally. For the past 25 years, I have ushered at the Queens Theatre, which was adapted from the former Theaterama at the 1964 New York World’s Fair. After seating the ticket holders, I get to be a part of the audience. This has given me the opportunity to expose myself to ballet, Shakespeare, the classics, and new playwrights. In 2017, Pro-Health established a Medi-

care Beneficiary and Community Advisory Board. I was delighted when asked to serve. We meet a couple of times each year. It consists of patients like myself and medical personnel. We give feedback to help improve care for the Medicare–and all of ProHealth patients. Of your many activities at NST which do you find the most interesting? I enjoy working with and using computers and other tech gadgets. They don’t frighten me. My husband and I used to build computers. When Spectrum’s package included a DVR, I heard many of my friends and residents express frustration at not being able to use the DVR. I made myself available to anyone who wanted to learn. It usually took about an hour, and I insisted that they take their own notes. I’ve only had one or two people ask me to come back and answer a few more questions. I restrict my list to those who live in Building One. I am part of the Holocaust Remembrance Program, helping with logistics. This program is very close to my heart as a second-generation survivor.

Grandpa Mets Game Essay By Howard Arkin The North Shore Towers Men’s Club had a trip to a Mets game on Thursday, May 23rd, which now looks to be an annual event. I picked up my ticket in April and immediately began thinking about how I would get to Citi Field. Driving was the logical way to go, but then another idea came to mind. I would turn the clock back 30 years when I was living in Bayside. My method of transportation back then was to first drive to the Long Island Railroad Station in Bayside, park my car (usually about eight blocks from the station) and walk. However, when I finally arrived at the station, I realized that my 2019 legs weren’t as strong as my 1986 ones were. The trip to Citi Field by the railroad was only about 10 minutes, costing me only $10 for the Senior Citizen off-peak fare. Parking at Citi Field would have cost me another $25. The $15 I was saving amounted to two Nathan’s Frankfurters at Citi Field. Can you imagine a frank costing $6.75 each? Oh well! Yoenis Cespedes has to be paid! Walking from the station to the stadium entrance, it looked as though half the crowd was wearing some sort of Met’s paraphernalia. Besides shirts, jackets, and baseball caps, I could see one man dressed in a complete Mets uniform. He was either ready to watch or possibly play in the game

himself. This was a far cry from when I saw my first game in 1947 wearing a Brooklyn Dodger’s cap. I think admission must have cost 75 cents. I arrived at game time and had a great seat, behind first base, right in between Arnie Rabinowitz and Arnie Cammeyer. Naturally, our conversation turned to sports. Rabinowitz told us of his exploits playing stickball on Sterling Place in Brooklyn back in the day. Unfortunately, his athletic career did not go much further than Sterling Place. Cammeyer’s baseball career, however, might have gone further. When he was offered a signing bonus of $150, his mother had convinced him that his future might not exactly be in baseball. The Yankee’s loss was to be the pharmaceutical industry’s gain. Babe Ruth’s, Lou Gehrig’s, and Joe DiMaggio’s records would remain safe. With the Mets leading 3-1 in the seventh inning, I decided that I would leave early and beat the crowd. While waiting for the train at Mets-Willets Station, a man listening to the game told me that the score was now 4-3, Washington. I boarded the train in despair. The Mets were losing, and I still had that awful seven-block walk back to my car. When I arrived back in Bayside, I looked into the Bourbon Street Bar window, right on Bell Blvd and could see that the Mets had won 6-4. I knew then and there that the walk back to my car would be much less painful.

Tennis President Marilyn Salzman By Barbara Levy

M

arilyn Salzman and her late husband, Al Fuchs, moved into North Shore Towers nine years ago. Fuchs formed the Men’s Club, which has grown significantly since it was started. An attorney, Salzman went to Queens College and majored in economics. She was a securities analyst on Wall Street, and became involved with the intellectually gifted program in the NYC school system, and then decided to go to law school. Now, 33 years later, she does arbitrations and mediations in New York, Florida, and internationally part-time. Her oldest son is an ophthalmologist who lives in Woodbury, her second son is a pediatrician specializing in infectious diseases in California, and her daughter is a psychologist in New Jersey. Her third son graduated from Harvard with an MBA in business administration and lives in Michigan, and her fourth son teaches computer science and lives in Bay Terrace. Her significant other, Bill Quinn, is a retired Nassau County Homicide Detective, who is an excellent ranked player of miniature golf. Before retiring, he worked on the Long Island Railroad case involving Colin Ferguson and on the Joey Buttafucco case. A snowbird, she plays both golf and tennis at the Boca Pointe Country Club. She is the captain of two tennis

teams and is proud that her senior division won the tennis championship at Palm Beach County in Florida. Their award, a trophy, was presented to them in a reception at the Kravis Center in Palm Beach. Salzman plays golf and tennis at NST, each one three times a week, and is now president of the NST Tennis Association. For the first time in NST history, tennis is free for all country club members during non-prime time hours. The NST Tennis Association is open to all country club tennis players, past players, their spouses, and significant others for an $85 fee. Their membership allows them to play during prime time, 8:00 am to 11:00 am, participate in clinics, tournaments, social events, Pro-Ams, and to have bagels and coffee on weekends. In addition, there is a promotion for first time outside sponsored members for $1,695. Tennis is available to all country club members Monday and Thursday evenings, except for holidays, for open play (6:30 pm to 8:30 pm), and Wednesday evenings except for holidays for zone tennis. The following is a 2019 schedule of tennis events that are available to all Tennis Association members and their guests: • Thursday) , June 6, Pro-Am Tournament. •June 17 (Monday evenings), tennis and pizza. • Sunday, June 23, Pro-Am exhibition. • Saturday, July 6, July 4th tournament and barbecue. NST Appreciation Day By Bud Bank On Sunday, June 2nd in the Towers on the Green we had an appreciation day. Every club and arcade vendor had a table; management, security, maintenance, and the Towers Country Club also had a presence. Attendance exceeded everyone’s expectations. We all received a free raffle and the winners received great gifts. Hats off to Linda Rappaport, who was cool, calm, and very professional. A great time was had by all, and I can’t wait for next year.

I was at the Towers Investment Club table with the president, Herb Cooper, and we were busy from start to finish engaging with guests and members. Many of our neighbors said they were interested in joining the club, and we invited them to come to our next meeting, which will be in the Coolidge Lounge, Tuesday, June 18th at 7:30 pm. If anyone is interested in attending our next meeting, please call Bud Bank at (347) 502-7365. Looking forward to meeting you.

In addition to her outgoing personality and winning smile, Salzman is a certified canasta teacher, president of the Towers Tennis Association, and a member of the TLGA (the Towers Ladies Golf Association) in charge of its constitution. Billie Jean King said, “Tennis is a perfect combination of violent action in an atmosphere of total tranquility.” That is one of the reasons why Salzman is so absorbed in playing tennis as often as she can and why she plays so well. She studies outstanding players and follows their example. One of interest is: “Martina Navratilova credits her winning so many tournaments by concentrating on concentrating.” Salzman encourages those who wish to join the Tennis Association to attend a tennis event and gain information about this lively group. Potential members and new members always receive their warm and friendly welcome.

Programs galore –no time for conjectures, Carmionio and Alvarez-who gave us great lectures. Then the Jewish Mafia and the mother confessors, With Ehrlich and Sackowit–-the St. John’s professors. Talking about workshops as I continue my rhyme, We added a new one called “Play Time”, Soul food for the mind and heart as well, Barbara Goldstein’s Series gives us a kvell. We had an international themeplanning another one, Watch for Italian Night - it’s sure to be fun. Jolly Fisherman was great-still want to munch? Just join in on our next Lunch Bunch, Our Cinema Club’s active–more movies to review. With a lively discussion-we hear from all of you, Museums and shows-restaurants are planned.

Cinema Club in high gear: A well-attended audience was present for the movie review of “Red Joan” with Dame Judi Dench. Based on a true story and a novel, the discussion generated many questions from the audience concerning the morality of Red Joan’s choice to spy for the Russians during the nuclear arms race following World War II. The discussion was so animated that it continued in the coffee shop after the program was over. A makeshift “Roundtable” was assembled, and Howard Simon, comanager of the theater, was present to add his perspective on the film and movies in general. The “Roundtable” may become a regular part of the movie review program, since it seems to be very successful. This month’s film for review is slated to be “Poms” with Diane Keaton. Dealing with ageism and following your dreams no matter how old you are, the film sets the scene for a myriad of family and social issues dealing with seniors. Although not well received by outside critics, the film does succeed on many levels

not cited by reviewer, who obviously could not identify with the age and circumstances of the movie’s premise. A true story of a senior cheerleading squad who defied many obstacles to achieve their goal, the discussion promises to be lively and relevant. All movie notices are on the easel at the top of the stairs leading to the theater. Look for the poster with the yellow rose–that’s us! What is Home Care and what type of Home Care is right for you? and improve your health so that you can remain in the familiar surroundings and safety of your home. The next type of home care is Personal Care. This is non-medical care such as assistance with daily living activities. Those caregivers who provide personal care are specifically trained to help an individual with a variety of daily activities. The services vary based on a person’s individual needs but can include help caring home attendant or home health aide, named Margie comes four times a week to help Joyce with grooming as well as shopping and meal preparation. How does one pay for home care services? Home care can be covered by paying privately, it may be covered by private or commercial insurance as well as Medicare, Part A, and B, and Medicaid depending on the type of home care needed and how you qualify for that care. For example, Medicare will cover Laura for inhome physical therapy and skilled nursing because she is homebound and experiencing great difficulty leaving her home after being hospitalized for a HIP fracture. In this case, Laura receives physical therapy, occupational therapy and skilled nursing care from the Certified Home Health Care Agency. Laura saw her physician, face-to-face, in the hospital prior to discharge; the MD’s plan of care for Laura notifies Medicare and the Certified Home Health Agency of the services and equipment that Laura needs so that she can be cared for in her own home. Certified home health care agencies are here to help you and will discuss the options available to you based on your individual care needs and the type of insurance coverage that you may have.

These are excellent questions as there are different types of home care that can support you or your family during illness or the onset of a new medical condition. Home health care is medically focused allowing a person to have specific care needs provided safely in the comfort and privacy of one’s own home. This can reduce undue stress, anxiety, and hardship for family caregivers. This type of home care is provided by licensed professionals such as registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech therapists or social workers. These medical services can include wound care, the administration of medications, such as insulin and other injections, as well as the overall monitoring of your health. To illustrate, Arthur was recently diagnosed with Diabetes, he required a medically focused type of home care. Sarah, a registered nurse from the certified home health care agency was able to come and provide Arthur with education about this new diagnosis of Diabetes as well as diabetic diet counseling. As it turned out, due to tremors in his hands Arthur was not able to self-inject so the registered nurse was able to administer his injections. Ruth is another example; she experienced a recent hospitalization due to a fall. When she was discharged from the hospital, the certified home health care agency sent a physical therapist to her home on the same day of her discharge to begin a course of restorative therapy. Initiating a client-centered plan of rehabilitation care, the physical therapist gradually helped Ruth increase her strength and tolerance which resulted in a significant improvement in Ruth’s ability to walk, climb stairs and regain independence. The true goal of home care is to address your needs
