arty Schwartzman moved to North Shore Towers three years ago and was elected to the Board of Directors in June of this year. He serves as treasurer of the co-op and is putting his career expertise in financial services to use for the community. Born in Bayside, Queens, Schwartzman and his family moved to Long Island when he was four years old. After he married he moved back to Bayside. In his teens, he attended school in Hicksville, then Hofstra University to earn his BBA in accounting and his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. After graduation, he took a job with the New York State Insurance Department regulating insurance companies. He started at the bottom and worked his way up to First Deputy Superintendent of the NYS Business Department. In 2010 the Insurance Department merged with the Banking Department and became the Department of Financial Services, and he was named the senior advisor to the superintendent. And after 35 years he retired in 2015 and now has a consulting practice representing insurance companies. Schwartzman said he chose to live at North Shore Towers because of the lifestyle and ideal location close to both New York City and Long Island. As treasurer, he works closely with NST Controller Robert Serikstad. The co-op’s board approves major projects affecting the entire complex, such as the construction in front of the buildings. Any expense over $7,500 has to gain the approval of the treasurer before payment is made. Before signing any contract concerning a large expense, it must be presented to the entire board for approval. Bills are given to the management office, and the last step in the process is approval from the treasurer. At open board meetings, residents can ask questions and the member of the board who has the best information pertinent to that inquiry will then address the resident to discuss the issue. If the information isn’t readily available, the board member will offer to look into the matter and provide an answer at a later date. The directors always try to discuss the matters raised by shareholders and attempt to offer a way to solve them. As board resolutions

are passed they are then posted to the public. At the board’s annual budget meeting, Tuesday, December 17th in the movie theater, Schwartzman told the audience that he would address the co-op’s long-standing policy of directors not being able to obtain hard copies of all contracts to review. “I don’t see the logic in that, and I don’t agree with that,” he said. He also stated that in his experience auditing big insurance companies his philosophy was always, “sunshine is the best disinfectant…In my opinion, it’s still a little bit cloudy here (North Shore Towers) and we need to do a little bit more work to clear that up…I haven’t always been able to receive all the documentation that I feel is necessary and that’s when I talk about the cloudiness.” Following that meeting, the board passed a resolution that was posted on December 30th: “Be it resolved, that the policy with regard to viewing documents, that any member will be able to maintain a copy of any contract or agreement with North Shore Towers and third-party entity approved: all nine directors.” If a resident has a major concern General Manager Glen Kotowski can be contacted, and if he can do anything to resolve the matter he will do so or will recommend someone else who can help. If it’s a leaky faucet that the resident is concerned about, then the maintenance department is available to assist. The board directors and the management staff want to protect the assets of the residents and will find the best way to do so. After the annual budget meeting, some residents also questioned the recent 2 percent maintenance increase that they are facing. Schwartzman said he is unhappy to have to make any increase since as a shareholder he pays it along with the rest of the residents, but he is dealing with the reality that he faces daily as treasurer. “Costs are up, inflation is a problem, expenses increase, cost of living contracts, labor unions fees rise, real estate taxes, Country Club costs rise,” he said. “Maintenance of the golf course is necessary to increase the membership, and keeping the property in good shape throughout the complex is a costly but necessary expense.” In our current capital development plan, we budgeted to refurbish the Arcade and the VIP room. “The board faces rising costs but wants to allocate funds in a smart and costeffective way, considering the price tag to the shareholders at all times,” Schwartzman said. “Residents all desire a comfortable, beautiful complex to live in and enjoy, yet must bear in mind that there are costs associated with maintaining such a first-class environment,” he continued. Although residents share the dream of having their fondest wishes for their homes come to fruition, to be practical the board deals with what they can do now and keeps some of the co-op’s to-do list for the future. The Bd. of Directors is composed of residents who do

North Shore Towers Bd. of Director’s 1st Vice President Fred Chernow. By Fred Chernow As we enter the second month of the New Year I’d like to share some of the items on my “wish list” for life at North Shore Towers in 2020. Primary is Bob Ricken’s return to good health and resuming his duties as President. He is making great strides at rehab, due largely to their program and the support and encouragement of his wife, Susan. You have elected a great group of board members and working together we hope to accomplish the following: A vigorous campaign to have the MTA reverse their tentative changes in the Queens Manhattan bus routes which would impact our residents negatively. Many of you have already written to our elected officials and have garnered promises of support. Our Political Action Committee is going to approach you to sign and circulate petitions. When writing letters be sure to include visits to Manhattan hospitals and doctors as well as attendance at cultural events. We can reverse their proposal if we have everyone’s support. The Capital Improvements Committee is exploring the installation of devices for our elevators which in the event of a power failure would enable the elevators to return to the nearest floor, open the doors, and release anyone who might be inside. House and Grounds is monitoring the Central Plaza renovation and evaluating the

current parking situation to determine if we can provide more spaces by re-configuring the road and also the unassigned spots. The Country Club Committee has ordered three additional treadmills, a PreCor machine and other equipment. Membership in tennis, golf, and pickleball continue to increase. Work on the 12th hole was completed along with trap work on 14 and 16, all within budget. We are looking ahead to additional hole and trap work in 2020. Our treasurer reports that a year-end review of financial operations yielded a very favorable result for shareholders in 2019–we came under budget and reduced operational costs. For 2020 we will continue to monitor very closely our expenses. The re-named Political Affairs Committee will continue to provide information dealing with health, Medicare, and Social Security issues. We continue to have large turnouts at both the 4:30 and 7:30 pm 92 Street Y on Demand Programs in the VIP Room selected by the Cultural Affairs Committee. Screening continues to do well. We continue to have more younger people being interviewed and approved. You’ve seen them enjoying the gym, pool, golf, and tennis as well as attending our evening programs, the NST Cinema, and shopping at our vendors. May we all do well and stay well in the year ahead!

Felice Hannah Memorial Held A By Michael Kohn

memorial program was held for former North Shore Towers Bd. Director Felice Hannah on Tuesday, January 14th at Towers on the Green. Hannah died Saturday, December 28th after a battle with cancer. She was 83. “Felice was a class act who spent many hours helping residents with personal Medicare issues and was an outstanding board member,” said Bd. Director Fred Chernow, who spoke at her memorial. “She remained a proud lady, even in her final days at Calvary Hospice, where I visited her. She is profoundly missed.” A video montage of Hannah’s highlights serving the Towers community was shown, and Debra MarkellKleinert introduced NYC Council Member Barry S. Grodenchik, with whom she made many improvements for NST residents. Several family members also spoke. “Felice Hannah was a remarkable person–an outspoken community leader, a dedicated lifelong educator, and a true friend,” Grodenchik said. “Like all of my friends at North Shore Towers, I miss her already.” Markell-Kleinert added, “Felice was a colleague on the NST Board of Directors, and she was a stylish lady who was compassionate, caring and courageous. Felice cared deeply about the community. My deepest condolences and may she rest in peace.”

Hannah served as Political Action Committee (PAC) Chairperson during her tenure on the board. The committee kept residents informed and involved regarding legislative issues. She was proud of her accomplishments, including securing a left turn signal, additional traffic signs, and safer pedestrian crossings at Little Neck Parkway. She also lobbied to secure a safer corridor along Marcus Avenue, with improved lighting, trimming and removal of several dead trees. In addition to debate forums and meet and greets, she also helped organize roundtable meetings and seminars with officials. Bd. of Director’s President Bob Ricken said of Hannah, “Not only was she an excellent board member who kept every meeting on focus, but she dedicated her life to creating workshops that would keep the residents of NST informed about their rights and responsibilities as citizens.” Hannah was a retired NYC Bd. of Education Administrator and Adjunct Professor. She earned her BS and MA from New York University and her PD from

St. John’s University. Her affiliations included Chairperson Community Board #13 Transportation Committee, Member Board of Directors Queensborough Community College, Liaison for Retired American Federation of School Administrators Members, and State Certified Volunteer Medicare Consultant and Fraud Prevention, Task Force. She also served as a legislative aide for several officials. Vicki Mazel recalled, “Felice was the first friend I made at the Towers. I was so impressed with her scruples and commitment to issues. She was one classy lady.” In a Tower Times interview, Hannah said, “My greatest achievement was becoming a mother and raising my two children to believe and to achieve. I have been faced with many challenges as an African American woman, but through all of the adversity, I have always tried to keep my eyes on my goals and to maintain a positive attitude about myself.”

Towers Tales: Barbara and Harold Hershman By Fred Chernow

S

eldom do we have new members of our community make friends and join groups as quickly as the Hershmans. Soon after unpacking they joined NST clubs, befriended their neighbors and attended most of the evening events. This affable and genial couple came from very diverse backgrounds and yet after a short courtship is enjoying a marriage of 60 plus years. You’ve undoubtedly seen them in the Arcade, VIP Room, gym, or card room. Where did you grow up? Harold was raised in Queens, first in Flushing and then in Jamaica Estates. He attended Stuyvesant High School, commuting every day into Manhattan and home again. New York University followed, where he majored in Political Science. As a member of the NYU swim team, he continued his subway traveling, this time to Brooklyn, to practice for the swim meets. NYU Law School was next, after which he set up a private law practice

with a fellow NYU classmate that lasted for 60 successful years. He had offices in Queens, Manhattan, and Long Island. Harold was a member of the Queens County Bar Association for over 50 years, where he was Chairman of the Civil Court Committee, was a Civil Court Small Claims Arbitrator, sat on the Supreme Court Medical Malpractice Panel and organized and led programs to Washington, DC for Supreme Court Admissions. He is now retired and truly enjoying his new status as a retiree. Barbara was born in New Jersey, but raised in Morgantown, West Virginia, population then, 24,000 people. Walking back and forth from home to school twice a day was standard. Her first school experience was in a one-room schoolhouse where she moved from row to row as she reached the next grade level. The family moved to Fresh Meadows, Queens in time for her to enter high school. She attended Jamaica High School where she was placed in speech class since no New Yorker could understand her strong southern accent. While in that class she made a close friend, who turned out to be Harold’s cousin. BarContinued on Page 11

The Glen Oaks Library Singing the Oldies

10 • TOWER TIMES • February 2020

The Glen Oaks Library staff. By Lorraine Bertan Why go to a library in this age of e-books and home computers with internet access? Libraries are community centers, where people of diverse backgrounds and ages exchange knowledge and ideas. As described by Younshin Kim, Community Library Manager of the Queens Public Library at Glen Oaks, the local population age distribution is 25 percent ages 65 and older and about 15 percent ages 85 and older. Northeast Queens has a high population of older adults. The population of young children in Glen Oaks is approximately 20 percent. How does the library accommodate its programs to the various populations it serves? As described by Kim, the focus of the Glen Oaks Library is three-fold: •To serve active seniors, who are highly involved in current and cultural life. •Reaching out to immigrants who reflect a high concentration of south Asian people. •After school programs for families with children. The Glen Oaks Library opened in its new building in 2013, and Kim joined the library in 2008. Her degree is Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS) from McGill University, Montreal. The library has 10 full-time employees and several part-time employees. With a library card in your possession, you can enjoy several activities and learning experiences at the Glen Oaks Library. Would you like to learn more about watercolor painting? Jack Adler, a resident of North Shore Towers, leads a club of 10-12 people, who enjoy the learning and social experience provided by a teacher who explores the

techniques of watercolor painting and enjoys working with people of different skills and backgrounds. What are the requirements to join this club that meets on Mondays from 1:30-3:00 pm? Just your own equipment and a library card. Would you like to display your artwork and photographs at the Glen Oaks “Hanging Gallery Space?” Contact Anne Scotti, Senior Librarian, at (718) 831-8636 or email at ascotti@Queenslibrary.org. D Do you like to sing? You may be interested in “Creative Aging: Choral Music Lessons” on Tuesdays, 1:15-2:45 pm. Are you interested in learning more about your family ancestry? The library can assist you in using the “Ancestry Library Edition” Data Base at the library. Would you like to learn “coding?” The library has an adult coding program, “Prenda Code Club for Boomers and Beyond” which meets on Tuesdays, 10:1511:30 pm, which requires registration. There is ongoing one-on-one commuter training for one hour and requires registration. All the programs are free. The library has three Saturday programs devoted to architecture, and registration is not required. •Architecture: “The Life of Frank Lloyd Wright,” Saturday, March 28, 2020, 3:004:00 pm. •“What Makes Two Famous NYC Skyscrapers Beautiful and Useful to Our Lives,” Saturday, April 25th, 3:00-4:30 pm. •“Architectures and You: Architecture of Today and Its Thrilling Meaning for our Lives,” Saturday, May 30th, 3:00-4:30 pm. Towers Tales: Barbara and Harold Hershman Continued from Page 7 bara was invited to Harold’s college graduation party and, after a walk around the block together that evening, a match was made that has lasted for 63 incomparable years. What did Barbara do? Barbara was an elementary school teacher and administrator on Long Island and is a recent retiree. She began her college courses at Michigan University. After her marriage to Harold, she completed her studies at Adelphi College. We lived in Whitestone. Barbara’s teaching career began in Albertson where she taught Kindergarten for a number of years. She then remained at home as she and Harold raised their four amazing children (no prejudice there). When she returned to work she taught classes from K-5. She ultimately became the Head of School at Westbury Friends School. It was from this position that she retired. The couple lived in Plainview for over 50 years. Harold was active in local and school board politics, and on Temple committees and a hands-on, enthusiastic supporter of his children’s many and varied activities. Barbara was an active participant in the PTAs of their children’s schools. She became the first woman President of Temple Beth Elohim in Old Bethpage.

What careers do your children follow? Our three sons became lawyers but did not practice with their father. Our daughter became a cardio-pulmonary therapist and a consultant for drug testing programs. Our in-law children are lawyers, decorators, business executives, and realtors. We are blessed with 10 grandchildren, all beautiful/handsome, intelligent, capable, and caring. We love to spend time with each and visit them often. What are some of your leisure activities? Over the years we have traveled extensively, Europe, Asia, South America. One of our favorite adventures was a trip to Vietnam and Cambodia, where just crossing the street was an experience. Harold loves sharing stories about our trips. We are long-time members and supporters of the NYC Ballet and the NY Philharmonic, spending many evenings at Lincoln Center. We spend many Saturday afternoons enjoying the “Opera at the Movies” In their apartment, Alexa can often be heard serving up concerts, opera, and Frank Sinatra. When did you move to NST? We are here for a little more than two years. We live in Building Three with the best staff, ever. We are active participants in the gym and exercise classes as well as

the variety of programs held in the VIP Room and theater. Barbara enjoys a steady mahjong game, and Harold is an active member of the Men’s Club and sometimes a strong voice in their current events meetings. He also likes sharing lunch with the Red Roosters, where stories from the past are fair game. They both belong to the University Club, learning something new at each session.

Every Saturday morning they can be found with friends walking the Arcade and then having breakfast at Buffy’s. They also made additional NST friends when they joined the Social Dance Class. “We tell all our friends how thrilled we are with our choice of a new home here at North Shore Towers. Each time we reenter the apartment, Harold is heard to say, “Another day in Paradise.”

The Hershman family: Kenneth, Douglas, Barbara, Harold, Janet, Scott.

North Shore Towers Cares for the Needy Pt. III By Beverly Bord Happy New Year 2020 to our friends and neighbors in North Shore Towers. In looking back at 2019, Arlene Greenwood and I, co-chairpersons of North Shore

Towers Cares for the Needy, will always remember 2019 as the year we were introduced to the joy of collecting essential daily items for the needy. Our introduction to collecting took place

helping those in need. By the following week, Hannah introduced Arlene and me to the joy of collecting for and donating to the needy. Felice, Arlene and I made our way to the Central Queens Y in Forest Hills, now part of Commonpoint Queens, to visit their food pantry and we were hooked. And so, 2019 has been an exciting and successful year for filling the brown bin in each building’s mailbox room. Much thanks to the residents of North Shore Towers. But most of all, to Felice Hannah and her devotion to helping those in need. Felice, if you can hear us, on to 2020! The following are collections for February, March, and April: February: New dental hygiene supplies (toothbrushes, toothpaste. floss, mouthwash). March: New cleaning supplies (sponges, spray cleaners, wipes). April: New bath hygiene supplies (soap, shampoo, shaving cream, razors).

exactly a year ago, January 2019, a time when we as a nation were feeling the effects of a lengthy and trying government shutdown. As shown on television, government employees and others affected by the shutdown stood on long lines anxiously waiting to receive a brown paper bag filled with food with which to feed themselves and their families. Seeing the long lines of needy persons reminded me of the Great Recession of 1929. I considered that perhaps something could be done by the residents of North Shore Towers for the needy in the Queens community. I proceeded to contact Felice Hannah, North Shore Towers Board of Directors member, leader of PAC and the community outreach program. I remembered Hannah for her great fondness, for her caring and dedication to people. I called her the next morning and inquired if there was some way in which NST could help during the ongoing shutdown. She emphatically told me that she could never say no to the request for

Passion For Fashion, Eyes For Spies By Vicki Mazel

ashionista and Nazi sympathizer Coco Chanel was the topic of the Women’s Club program held on Wednesday, January 15th in the lower card room. The club hosted well-known author and lecturer Rita Plush, whose expertise spans many fields, including fashion, interior design, and decorative arts. The well-filled room heard the discussion on Chanel, who took women out of crinolines and put them in trousers. She was also responsible for the little black dress, bell-bottomed trousers, bobbed hair, and millinery. The empire that Chanel created and the legacy she left behind also included the most famous fragrance of them all–Chanel Number 5. The Chanel handbag is forever the status symbol, along with the Chanel logo, which is internationally recognized. Plush traced Chanel’s humble beginnings from the illegitimate daughter of an itinerant street vendor and a laundress, learning how to sew in the convent she attended as a child. Working her way into society by becoming a mistress to wealthy men, one of them launched her fashion career by financing a shop for her. She

built upon that by parlaying into shops in wealthy resort areas. She also became a licensed milliner, selling to noteworthy actresses and women placed high in society. Plush spoke of Chanel’s antisemitism, although Samuel Goldwyn brought her to Hollywood to dress Gloria Swanson. While accepting a generous salary from him, her antisemitism was still in evidence. The engrossed audience heard Plush describe Chanel’s many contributions to the world of fashion, including designing sportswear for women, pillbox hats, costume jewelry, the little black dress, spectator shoes, and suntans in the winter. Plush explained that before the emergence of Chanel’s influence, a winter suntan connoted a woman who worked in the fields. Ever the trendsetter, Chanel was basking in resort areas thus legitimizing the suntanned look. Touching on her private life, including affairs with Pablo Picasso and Igor Stravinsky, being a mistress to more than one man at one time and openly hating gays, Chanel also had lovers who were officers in the Nazi party. She was deemed to be a Nazi sympathizer, and at one time lived at the Ritz Hotel in Paris, which was headquarters for high-ranking Nazi officials. She stopped making clothes in 1940 when the Germans arrived in Paris, and was consid-

ered by some to be a German agent. Some named her “a horizontal collaborator,” because of her prolific sex life with Nazis. Chanel died in 1971, very much alone in her later years. Karl Lagerfeld became the chief designer of her company. Plush pointed out that Coco Chanel had a rich history of ambition on many fronts, including international involvement and being the single most influential designer of modern times. Cinema Club Twofers Taking on the battle of the critics, the Cinema Club has opted to review both “Parasite” and “The Good Liar,” spotlighting the critic’s responses to the films and the opinions of the audience. On Monday, January 27th, after seeing trailers of both films, discussion leader Vicki Mazel and Nurit Israeli will discuss different aspects of the choices. Why does one film win awards, while another film with superb acting gets no response from the awards or critics world? It makes for fascinating dialogue, and all residents are encouraged to attend. Our movie theater shows the best films around, and we hope everyone takes advantage of this wonderful convenience. There’s plenty of parking. By Vicki Mazel This year marks the fifth anniversary of The Towers on the Green ownership by Buffy and Angelo. In appreciation of all the functions held by the North Shore Towers Clubs at their establishment, they are going to hold a special dinner celebration. This special party will be hosted by them with the assistance of Gloria Beck and Vicki Mazel on Sunday, March 15th, at 5:00 pm at the Towers On The Green. This exciting evening will be capped off with entertainment by the Metropolitan Klezmers, who will be performing “vibrant versions of Yiddish melodies.” The group, founded in 1994, has recorded many albums, including one that was selected as the best album of that year. Critics proclaim, “their traditional Klezmer is done with eclectic exuberance.” Additionally, by this evening being proclaimed Club Appreciation Night by

Men’s Club: Memoirs of a WWII Navy Diver By Howard Arkin

A

s the years go by we have less opportunity to hear of the personal experiences of the men of the greatest generation. The North Shore Towers Men’s Club was privileged to hear a talk by fellow resident Paul Stein on Thursday, January 9th. Stein is the author of a book titled, “In The Beginning.” The book covers his enlisting in the Navy shortly after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor until his discharge in 1946. Stein saw action in three theaters of war, North Africa, Europe, and the South Pacific. Not all of his fights were confined to the battlefields. He described an encounter with an anti-Semitic shipmate in which he did not quite come out on the winning end. His opponent also had some scars to show for the encounter, but he also had greater respect for the Jew who fought back. PS Stein got to the gym and there were no more problems. It was a common practice in the service to never volunteer for anything, but he said he saw it differently and volunteered to go into the navy diver program. Far more danger awaited him in this program than remaining a seaman. On June 5, 1944, he was assigned to a submarine which left southern England for the coast of Normandy one day before the invasion. Its mission was to destroy German emplacements. It was successful but some of his fellow divers did not survive. After the war in Europe ended Stein was sent to the Pacific and eventually to occupied Japan. His ship, the Vulcan, was docked in Kobe, which is not too far from Hiroshima, and Stein feels that some of his

shipmates’ early deaths after the war might have resulted from the radiation caused by the dropping of the A-bomb. His final trip home passing the Statue of Liberty and his home town navy yard gave him a wonderful feeling. Our country owes him and all of those who served with him our everlasting gratitude. * * * At about 8.30 a.m. three days a week anywhere from 15 to 20 members of the North Shore Towers Men’s Club begin straggling into Buffy’s. They are there to have their breakfasts, but more importantly to discuss the major topics of the day. Topics range from doctors’ visits to attacking everyone’s bête noire (I’ll let you guess who that might be). Of course, restaurant reviews and grandchildren are also discussed in great detail. If you aren’t a Men’s Club member, now is the time to join us. Due to the annual Florida migration, some choice seats are still available. With the dishes of choice being oatmeal at $4.30 or eggs and potatoes at $5.40, how can you go wrong? I try to get to breakfast early, thereby affording me a seat at the center of the table. This allows me to partake in the conversations that interest me the most. Never having been a poker player I cannot lend much to Jack Savita’s and Jerry Siegel’s discussion of the previous night’s game. I have learned that some poker players are better than others though. Not knowing a “put” from a “call” leaves me somewhat at a loss in the Yale Kessler, Ron Levin, and Steve Auerbach stock market discussions, but I now know that Alibaba was not only some Arabian character involved with 40 thieves but is also China’s equivalent to Amazon.

NST COMMITTEE UPDATE

Political Affairs/Marketing & Media By Debra Markell Kleinert We are working with all of our elected officials and the MTA on the bus network redesign meeting to host and have a workshop here at a North Shore Towers in March. The date is being finalized. In addition, our committee has a subcommittee that is working on creating and circulating a petition to our residents that will be presented to the MTA to save our Full service of the QM 6 bus.

We are hosting a Meet the Queens Borough President Candidates forum in the theatre on Thursday, February 13, at 7:00 pm. The Beaumont room is under construction with lighting, new ceiling, painting, etc. and we look forward to the room being ready soon. Once that is completed we will have a full ribbon cutting and a subcommittee will work on programming the room for events. More to come!

One subject that does not get as much attention, however, is sports. Someone might come down and mention a Met or Yankees win or loss, but it doesn’t go much beyond that. John Rondinelli, having been a Suffolk County Police Department inspector has given us some interesting insights into the differences between the New York City and Suffolk County police departments. Harold Hershman, our resident attorney has given us some sound legal advice on occasion and so far his services have been pro bono. I’m afraid to ask what his hourly rates usually are. The other day Jerry Siegel told me that when he was courting his future wife, Marion, he had to take four different trains from the Cypress Avenue

station in the Bronx to the Sumner Avenue station in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The man must have surely slept late on Sunday mornings. The highlight of the January 1, 2020 breakfast was having Toby Horowitz back. As many of you might know, Toby underwent a successful kidney transplant operation. He looks and feels great. His return has been a great addition to the table. 2020 figures to be an exciting year and the table discussions, some brilliant and some not so brilliant, will resonate throughout North Shore Towers. So, in the immortal words spoken on the television game show, The Price is Right, “come on down” to breakfast at Buffy’s.

Winter in Florida, 2020 By Bud Bank I am in Boca Raton, Florida with hundreds of North Shore Towers residents. The day I arrived I went to Harmon Drug for supplies. As I was walking down the aisle a lady I had never met said, “Hi Bud.” She said she loves reading my Investment Club articles. Very nice lady, but I’ve been in North Shore Towers for six years and never spoke to her; what a pleasant surprise. The next day while I was in Publix and again bumped into another North Shore Towers resident. It’s so nice to see neighbors when at our home away from home. It’s great to be with friends new and old during my winter getaway. I’ve been reading Nextdoor, sorry to hear about the hot water problem. Very sad about the loss of two wonderful residents, my heart goes out to their families. I love to read what Barbara L. has to say. She loves North Shore Towers and tries to make it a better place for all of us. Thank you, Barbara, for all you do. When I’m home I use the express bus every week,10:00 am out, 2:00 pm home. Unfortunately, the new schedule is not

convenient for me and I’m sure many others as well. One of my Florida friends asked me what I miss at North Shore Towers. I miss the wonderful good morning greeting from Neil the doorman and the good evening greeting from Joe. Of course I also miss seeing Buffy and Dennis-owners of our wonderful restaurants. I miss my Arcade walking partner, my Tuesday luncheon friend, and the couple we have dinner with on Friday night. See you all soon.

Pages From Our Past FEBRUARY 2011 Ricken Looks Ahead to 2011 Looking into his proverbial crystal ball towards 2011, Bd. President Bob Ricken was asked, “What do you think is the most important issue facing North Shore Towers?” “I think it’s capital improvements, but we have the money, so it’s not really a crisis at all,” he said. “We just received the bid for the chimneys. Within that stack, we have one for electricity, one for heat, and one for the exhaust for the restaurant. The lowest bid was just over $1 million.” Reflecting on the Board’s accomplishments of the previous year, he added, “If you coast, you can only go downhill.” Future projects included resurfacing ramp three, and installing renovated lobby entrance doors in all three buildings. Work would also begin in the garden area adjacent to the parking lot. This project would include repaving the garden paths that connect each building to the large parking lot. Towers Responds to Blizzards Better than NYC As New York City residents coped with the third snowstorm in three weeks, city officials continued to deal with a litany of complaints about inefficient snow and trash removal, leaving much of the area paralyzed during previous blizzards. In sharp contrast, Towers residents praised their co-op officials for another job well done. With another nine inches of snow blanketing the sur-

rounding area, Bd. President Ricken enthusiastically commented from his apartment, Wednesday, January 12th. “The guys were great again,” he said. “The entire parking lot is free of snow and only the blacktop is showing. Perhaps Mayor Bloomberg should pay a visit to learn how the job should be done, courtesy of the NST Board of Directors and Greenthal Management.” A Toddler Refugee’s Saga Eva Kessner, age 2, experienced another failed attempt to get her family out of France and into Switzerland. She asked, “Mama, why can’t we get on that train?” Decades later, as a NST resident, she recalled her mother’s response. “The train was packed, and we couldn’t get on,” she said. “The next day we heard that the train was stopped at the Swiss border and all the Jews aboard were arrested and sent to Nazi concentration camps.” FEBRUARY 2015 Curtain Rises On Theater The curtain rose on the new and improved Towers Cinema, featuring significant state-of-the-art improvements. Some residents have questioned the necessity for redoing the theater, but the subject is far more complicated than many realize. •The theater is 40 years old and has had no significant upgrades in all that time. •The antiquated equipment did not permit scheduling current movies for residents to enjoy. The theater has now transitioned to digital technology.
