Coronavirus Meeting By Barbara Levy

T

he North Shore Towers Bd. of Directors hosted a seminar on Wednesday, March 11th, presented by Dr. Gabriela Solis of Northwell Health to educate residents on health policies to prevent the spread of the new Coronavirus pandemic. Good personal hygiene and sanitizing everything touchable in the home were among the suggestions made to protect the community from becoming ill. Sanitizing stations have been installed in the three lobbies and the maintenance department is following a daily sanitizing schedule in all public areas of the buildings, as suggested by the NYC Department of Health and the Center for Disease Control. The co-op’s Verticon units recirculate the air, and 100 percent fresh air is being pumped into the building’s halls. Porters in the lobbies wipe anything that is touched, including elevator buttons and handles on carts. In the VIP area, anything touchable, including equipment in the aerobics room, gym, and elevators, is being treated with sanitized wipes. Dr. Solis discussed the history of the outbreak, which started in China then spread to become the current pandemic. The Coronavirus is part of the family of viruses that causes colds and SARS. Respiratory symptoms and coughs are usually present and the virus can be transmitted within a six-foot area. Travelers on planes and trains can easily transmit the virus, which is now stable in China and in increasing numbers in other countries.

Those over 80 years of age, with or without chronic diseases such as cardiac problems and diabetes, are more vulnerable. The symptoms include fever and cough, and if they occur a physician should be called. Hand washing for enough time to sing “Happy Birthday” twice should be done often by all members of the family to cut down transmission rate. Doctors say those who contract the Coronavirus should self-isolate and be treated by a qualified medical care provider. Restrict contact with the family to avoid transmitting the disease. The City Bd. of Health should also be notified. Dr. Solis told the audience that, “Panic and A SIGN OF THE TIMES: A North Shore Towers hand sanitizer station. hysteria won’t make you healthier.” Rational things to do include listening to the Events will be canceled to avoid mass transmission of the in-house channels 994 and 995 to stay informed, and virus. Things to avoid during this time include large crowds, touching your face, and boarding cruise ships. Sanitize your kitchen and bath, clean tables, doorknobs, lamp switches and anything touchable at home. Follow CDC instructions on how to take care of yourself at home. s COVID-19 spreads around the globe, so does misinformation. Here are some facts about the virus and the infection it causes. It’s important to know your source of information. Accurate facts come from sources such as the CDC (Center for Disease Control), WHO (World Health Organization), appropriate government agencies, information from reputable qualified people, scientists, and knowledgeable health care workers. These are the sources of the following information. Also, there are regular updates from the CDC at www.cdc.com. What is it? Coronaviruses comprise an entire branch of the virus family tree including disease-causing pathogens behind the flu, SARS, MERS and several variants of the common cold. An animal reservoir has yet to be pinpointed defini-

Covid-19 Continued from Page 3 they’re infected. How is it Transmitted? The virus is capable of moving directly from person to person through tiny respiratory droplets produced when an infected person talks, coughs or sneezes. So it exits from the mouth or nose. It travels through the air to settle directly on skin or frequently touched surfaces, like doorknobs. If you touch surfaces that may be contaminated, or are close to someone who has coughed or sneezed, and then touch your nose or your mouth, you’re ultimately bringing that virus closer to contact with the parts of your body that can get infected. It doesn’t infect you through your skin, it infects you through your respiratory tract. Droplets landing on surfaces are infectious for up to 4-5 days or more depending on the surface. Three feet or less appears to be the distance the virus could travel. To Avoid Infection: One of the most important steps to preventing the spread of viral and bacterial infections is also the simplest: wash your hands the right way after touching a potentially contaminated surface. The CDC and other reliable sources recommend the same preventative actions one should follow during flu season: •Cancel trips to areas under a CDC Warning Level Three or Alert Level Two. This currently includes China, Iran, Japan, South Korea, and Italy. Check updates regularly at www.cdc.com. •Stay home from work or school if you do get sick. •Avoid close contact with people who are sick–within six feet. •Avoid touching your face, especially your eyes, nose, and mouth. ·Use your knuckles instead of the hand when you can (elevator button, closing a door). •Cover your cough or sneeze with your hand, arm or tissue (then throw the tissue in the trash and wash up). •No handshaking–use fist or elbow bump. •Clean and disinfect touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe. Don’t use these products on your skin. •Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. •Though soap may not destroy viruses, it plays a big role in dislodging them from the skin.

•Plain soap is best. Skip antibacterial products. There’s no evidence that they work any better against viruses. •If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer containing at least 60 percent alcohol. •Keep a hand sanitizer in the car–use when you pump gas, etc. •Remember you’re not only protecting yourself, but also trying to protect others. •Don’t believe all the ads from companies about the effectiveness of their products. Most are hype. •Stop buying masks! The Surgeon General & CDC say they won’t protect from coronavirus. •Most face masks, including loosefitting surgical masks, are not effective at protecting individuals from respiratory diseases. •The virus itself is so small that it can penetrate the mask, so it literally does nothing for you. •Special face masks should only be used by health care workers and people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent the spread of the disease to others. Current Treatment: There are dozens of vaccines in the pipeline to prevent Covid-19. All around the world research for a vaccine has become a priority. They won’t be available for at least a year and must be tested for safety. Research is underway to treat people who have contracted Covid-19. There is not yet an approved antiviral drug for the virus, although several are being tested. Right now doctors can recommend only the usual remedies for any viral illness: rest, medicine to reduce pain and fever, and fluids to avoid dehydration. The U.S. has ramped up its diagnostic efforts, which will undoubtedly reveal more cases. These reports aren’t necessarily an indication that the virus is spreading faster, only that health officials are becoming more aware of its movements within American borders. According to Johns Hopkins University, it’s important to remember that thousands of people around the world have already recovered from the disease, many never knowing they had it. We should prepare, not just because we may feel personally at risk, but so that we can help lessen the risk for everyone. We should prepare not because we are facing a doomsday scenario out of our control, but because we can alter every aspect of this risk to society. Above all, don’t panic. Don’t let fear and emotion drive the response to this virus. Infection is by no means a death sentence, and should not be treated as one.

Towers Tales: Dermatologist Donald Feinsod By Fred Chernow

W

ouldn’t it be nice to have an experienced and respected dermatologist whose office you could walk to? Someone with a large and devoted following on the South Shore of Long Island who now lives at NST? Dr. Feinsod has years of experience on two continents and keeps active by treating patients on Fridays in the Arcade Office of our dentist. Dr. Abraham Borenstein, who is off on Fridays. His wife June is the office manager and you can make an appointment by calling: (347) 408-4646. Dr. Feinsod is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology and is a frequent speaker at their conventions, like the one in San Antonio, Texas. Where did you grow up? I was one of three children growing up in Rego Park, Queens. I graduated from Forest Hills High School and went on to Bethany College in West Virginia, where I earned a B.S. degree. Bethany was one of my choices because of its fine pre-medical

and pre-dental programs. In 1968 I married June Dworkin, a South Shore native. After she graduated from Adelphi University she earned a Master’s degree and became a secondary school Spanish teacher at Lawrence JHS and HS. What’s unusual about your family? The chances of giving birth to twins is one in 250. Both June and I are twins. Our children are fraternal twins: Michael and Melissa. Michael is a successful attorney and lives in Roslyn. Melissa lives in Delray Beach, Florida and is a pediatrician. Where did you spend your extended honeymoon? In 1968, one day after getting married, we flew to Israel. I enrolled in Hadassah Medical School in Jerusalem, where I earned my medical degree. I followed this up with a rotating internship in St. John, Newfoundland. After college and before medical school I worked for Nikon Camera in product development. Always interested in inventing products, I developed a microscope light for the evaluation of medical specimens without physically staining the specimen. I also helped develop a retinal/

fundus camera. What came next? I completed my residency at Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, becoming the chief resident in dermatology. We

settled on the South Shore, in Hewlett and Atlantic Beach for 30 years. My dermatology practice grew and I became certified in dermatology surgery as well. Continued on Page 14

Men’s Club: Author-Lecturer Saul Fathi By Howard Arkin

T

he North Shore Towers Men’s Club was pleased to welcome Saul Fathi as the evening’s guest speaker on Thursday, February 13th. A noted author and lecturer, Fathi was born in 1938 to a prominent Jewish family living in Baghdad, Iraq. Following the independence of Israel in 1948, a wave of antisemitism occurred in Iraq. Rather than face religious persecution, Fathi’s family chose to flee to this newly formed state. Fathi was now embarking on the phase of his life that would eventually bring him “Full Circle,” which would aptly be

the title of one of the many books he authored. In Israel, he received an electrical engineering degree from the Israeli Airfare Academy of Aeronautics and practiced as a certified electrical engineer. The year 1958 found Fathi in Brasilia, Brazil, where he started his own engineering business. He was then on to the United States on a student exchange visa where in return for a three-year army commitment Fathi received free college tuition as well as United States citizenship. He eventually received his degree from the University of Virginia and went on to work as an executive at several Fortune 500 companies. Fathi retired in 2003 and now resides with his wife Rachelle in Central Islip. Before beginning his lecture, Fathi

on your face the entire day. I am told that I should not be political, so I will not mention the names of the three men who are currently running for president. However, one member said that one of those three will be responsible for one million deaths due to his mishandling of the current Coronavirus. I think he does not like that man. Someone else said that there were only a few Purell hand sanitizers left on the NST grocery shelf. I could see a mad dash to the store–after breakfast of course. One member saw the current crises possibly leading into the influenza epidemic of 1918 or worse, the bubonic plague. Despite some of the silly things that I have heard at the table I’m extremely grateful for having had the opportunity to listen and learn from my well-informed and smart table mates. This is what keeps me coming back three days a week. If you are a member of the Men’s Club and you have not come down to any of the breakfast you are missing something. Don’t let the picture of the empty table fool you. Quite often seats have to be added. See you soon.

I look forward to working with our residents to manage this crisis together. If you have a specific question you can write to me at FCmemory@gmail.com. Given the time constraints of the lecture, it would seem impossible to cover all of those topics, and unfortunately it was. Being a history buff myself, I found Fathi’s recollection of history to be quite accurate, yet some of his personal views to be rather controversial. His first view that was controversial was his argument that unification between North and South Korea would be mutually beneficial, but he places almost all of the responsibility on South Korea. Fathi also expressed a controversial view regarding the territory of Crimea. He argues that because Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union and Russia for 300 years that they should understand that Russia is entitled to Crimea. He also argues that Ukraine should not be a member of either NATO or the EU. I think that most people in this country would disagree. Fathi proved to have a tremendous knowledge of history and provided a very stimulating lecture. I am sure that we will hear from him again soon. * * * About 15 minutes after the photo (right) was taken club members began to arrive. You could then expect to hear conversations the likes of which have not been heard since those that were spoken at the Algonquin Round Table almost a century ago. Some of the discussions are enlightening, outrageous and many are extremely humorous. Some of them are bound to keep a smile

Ehrlich and Sack: The Profs Are Back By Vicki Mazel

P

opular St. John’s history professors, Howard Ehrlich, and Harvey Sackowitz are returning to the Women’s Club stage for their presentation of “Behind Closed Doors–The Private Lives of Presidents And First Ladies.” The program will take place in the large card room on Wednesday, April 23rd at 7:15 p.m. Sharing their expertise with us in the areas of American presidential history, the dynamic duo will lift the curtain on some of the private workings of marital relationships in the White House. We are looking forward to this sneak peek into elements of human behavior that may have shaped history. Cinema Club–The Song of Names On Monday, March 23rd, the Cinema Club review of “The Song of Names” will be another notch in the belt of fine films offered by our North Shoe Towers Movie theater. The film, which was held over due to its popularity, explores the unique relationship of two men who form a special connection to each other in their childhood. A privileged young Englishman and a Polish immigrant who is a violin prodigy bought up as brothers is where the backdrop of World War II sets the stage for the journeys of separation. This forms the raison d’être for the film, which covers decades of time and experiences on several continents. The exquisite violin music enhances the soundtrack of this absorbing and haunting film. Background and analysis of the film’s characters are provided by discussion leaders Vicki Mazel and Dr. Nurit Israel. The movie review programs are open to all residents and are held in the movie theater at 11:00 am on a designated Monday. A trail-

er of the selected film is shown. Notices are posted at the movie theater box office, the coffee shop entrance, and in all mailrooms. News From The South On Thursday, February 27th, 20 members of the North Shore Towers Women’s Club South visited the Morikami Museum, the only Japanese museum in the United States. The docents escorted us through beautiful gardens and spotlighted many things that are unique about them. Next was a fascinating exhibit about Japanese anime, the shortened variant of the English word “animation,” which refers to Japanese animated films. Anime is especially popular with younger audiences in the U.S., although the roots of this global industry are firmly planted in Japan. A Bento Box was provided for lunch, including wonderful Japanese foods. The day was capped off with a visit to the gift shop to explore all the interesting unique items. Thus ended a wonderful day filled with camaraderie and exploring a different culture to enhance our global perspective. With winter at an end, we will soon be returning to North Shore Towers to reunite with our members up North and continue our activities together. Go On With Your Life By Fred Chernow It’s perfectly normal to feel anxious about the emerging coronavirus, but we must put it in perspective. Of course, take normal healthy precautions, like washing your hands regularly and thoroughly. But don’t put your life on hold. Continue to enjoy those simple pleasures, like a carefully prepared meal in a nearby Chinese restaurant, Pearl East on Northern Boulevard. For years I’ve treasured the fresh,

authentic dishes made with locally purchased ingredients. None of the food is imported and the kitchen staff has worked there for most of the 20-year reign of Cathy Huang, the ever-present owner. She constantly oversees the chefs, food handlers and servers. Here you can enjoy classic dishes, sushi, and an innovative menu in a refined and immaculate setting. Give your TV a rest and relish a five-star meal minutes from your apartment without any angst.

Dermatologist Donald Feinsod Continued from Page 5 Did your interest in developing new medical products continue? Yes, I invented and developed the number one prescribed topical medication for the treatment of acne. This led to developing a line of products that are now dispensed by dermatologists nation-wide. Most recently, I came up with a proprietary shaving mouse for the treatment of Sycoris barbae/razor irritation. Men with this problem now enjoy shaving with this product because it gets to the root of their problem skin. What do you enjoy doing when you are not practicing or inventing? We enjoy traveling around the globe. Our two favorite countries to visit are Israel and Italy, having returned there many times. Closer to home, we are very involved in philanthropy. We are major donors to Hadassah and the Hewlett-East Rockaway Jewish Center. We’ve been hon-

ored by the UJA-Federation South Shore Division. We’ve hosted countless luncheons for Israel bonds and UJA. Our Hewlett Bay Park home was the site of many major fundraising events when at different times we hosted former Jerusalem mayor Ehud Barak, the famed Israeli artist, Yaacov Agam, Dr. Ruth Westheimer, U.S. Senator Frank Lautenberg, and Tom Lantos, the first foreign-born Jewish Congressman. When did you come to NST? We moved here in November 2018 and love it. It’s truly stress-free living where most everything is taken care of for you. No hassles with snow removal, landscaping, security, etc. And the staff! Such extremely professional doormen and concierges. The gym and pools are a real plus, as well as the movie theater and the invited speakers. We’re so glad friends recommended NST to us. We now recommend it to others.

Pages From Our Past first solo show, at the Shelter Rock Art Gallery beginning April 8th. The Building Two resident’s month-long exhibit will feature 25 to 30 of her unique water color-collage works, displaying vibrant three-dimensional realism. “It’s my own technique, and nobody else is doing this,” she said of her creations. “I have a background in illustration, and the use of light and shadow makes this different. My things look like photographs and are always correct in dimension size and proportion.” APRIL 2015 Movie Theater Mavens Anne and Henry Stampfels’ lives read like a wonderful old film, and now they are the new operators of the Towers Cinema. These two born and bred Long Islanders come by their interest in the movie business quite naturally. The Stampfels met at the Oceanside Theater in 1978. Anne had a job working as a secretary to a film booker in an office above the theater, and she took on a night job running the theater’s candy counter. The Stampfels had already spread their wings and purchased the Bellmore Movies, an oldfashioned single-screen house, in 1986, and then rented the Malverne Cinema in 1990, now a five-screen theater. $32M Cleanup of Unisys Site A $32 million state-ordered cleanup was planned for the former Unisys Corporation’s site, North Shore Towers’ Lake Success neighbor. The contaminated groundwater plume underneath the location had already spread to over 900 acres, and extraction wells were to be installed to rem-

edy the problem.
