Dynamic Centenarian Celebrates By Barbara Levy

dele Hoffman has been a North Shore Towers resident for 27 years and lived alone very independently until she turned 97. She has had help ever since, and her companion, Liz, has been with her for years. A popular resident of NST, Hoffman plays bridge five times a week or more. She does very well in the money games, where the players vie for the winning positions and Hoffman is almost always among them. Her health is good and it was reported that she walks so briskly that even younger people can’t keep up with her. Hoffman and Liz have lunch and dinner with Hoffman’s friend Marlyn Perry and Marlyn’s companion, Lorna, every day. If the restaurant at the VIP room is closed, they eat at Buffy’s restaurant. They all get along very well and enjoy their time together. A lively buffet lunch took place in the Coleridge Lounge to celebrate her 100th birthday. It began at noon on Thursday, February 21st and ended near 4:00 pm. It was attended by family members, some NST board members, bridge friends and many of her neighbors. Hoffman has two daughters, Joan and Carol. Joan did a wonderful job in decorating the Coleridge Lounge and her husband, Jeffrey, helped. There was even a colorful red frame around the door to the lounge so that everyone passing by in the Arcade knew that something important was being celebrated. The guests came and went, so it was hard to determine an exact number. Liz estimated that between 60 and 70 people were there to celebrate Hoffman’s birthday. She

looked lovely, and her warm personality and bright smile greeted everyone as they entered the room and returned her smile. The laughter and the excited chattering of the guests was evidence of the enjoyment everyone was having as they helped themselves to the buffet. Iavarone of Lake success catered the party. Known for their mile-high sandwiches and delicious salads, the food was enjoyed by everyone. A huge birthday cake with chocolate icing and a chocolate cream filling had three lit candles with “100” cut into each. Hoffman blew them out after making her wish, as everyone sang “Happy Birthday” to her. The cake was cut into individual portions and served. It was the perfect ending to a lovely afternoon. On Sunday, February 24th, her actual birthday, Hoffman had another party in a restaurant in Manhattan just for her family. There were around 50 or more who attended the Ristorante Morini. Most of her family was able to attend, including her children, nephews, nieces, grandchildren, and four greatgrandchildren. They came from all over the country to celebrate her birthday with her. After lunch, a projector was then set up and Joan described the 170 individual pictures that were shown. They were the past and present of Hoffman’s life, and among them were photos of her parents, siblings, and others from their youth to the present. There was a lot of chatting and laughter at the tables throughout, but there was silence while Joan was describing the photos of Hoffman’s life. There were many smiles as well as tears during the presentation, and all agreed it was the highlight of the party. Hoffman enjoys her life at NST. She has an active social life and visits Joan and Jeffrey in Manhattan for dinner

he North Shore Towers Country Club’s wading pool project is a completion of the pool repair and renovation project initiated several years ago. North Shore Towers Bd. of Directors President Dr. Stanley Goldsmith reported that the outdoor pool entrance area and kiddie pool area were delayed for several reasons, including distributing the expense over several years. “More importantly, the entire project is not simply an aesthetic one,” Goldsmith said. “The project is a response to the need to address the leaking water supply and drainage.” Since the wading pool problem was considered smaller than the issues with the two adult pools the work was delayed. “Nevertheless, it was a need that had to be addressed,” Goldsmith continued. “The concrete area was over 40 years old. Upon review, it made sense to replace it rather than simply patch multiple areas. The upgrade to include spray represents a modest incremental expense.”

During a storm, the three generations spend the night together in his mother’s Tokyo apartment. A touching film. The Cakemaker (Netflix–film) A gay German baker and an Israeli widow share a loss. Brief scenes in Berlin while most of the film takes place in Jerusalem. A tender love triangle with one missing member. A well-crafted story with beautifully drawn characters. Depicts frictions between religious and non-religious Jews in contemporary Israel as well as an unusual love story.

The Primary Election will be held June 25th, and the General Election in November. After 28 years a newly elected Queens District Attorney will take office in January 2019. The position of Queens District Attorney has been held by the Honorable Richard Brown since 1991, who is resigning on June 1st. This will be the first time NST will host this important event. Special Concert Offering By Vicki Mazel Landmark on Main Street in Port Washington is hosting a special concert by virtuoso pianist John Bayless on Saturday, April 27th, at 8:00 pm. Bayless had been concertizing all over the world until a stroke left him isolated from the musical life he’d always known, but now he’s back. Bayless has put together an inspirational and humorous one-man show with writerdirector Stewart M. Schulman, a Towers resident. The theater on Main Street will present the return to the stage of this worldrenowned concert pianist, composer, and recording artist in the world premiere of his new one-man show. “One Hand, One Heart,” featuring music by Gershwin, Bernstein, Puccini, Mancini to name a few. Bayless will take the audience on the amazing journey of his life through his music–his highs, his lows and to his “second act” concertizing after his stroke with his left hand alone.

The evening is being sponsored by Paula Kaminsky Davis and Angela Jaggar and will be performed in the Jeanne Rimsky Theater. Guest artists include singer Mia Pinero and dancer Meredith Fages of Heidi Latsky Dance, as well as other surprises. A documentary film crew will be recording the performance as part of a feature-length documentary currently in production titled “Left Alone,” that will share Bayless’s inspiring true story. Watching his spirit transcend great adversity, his journey back to the concert stage represents the highest form of human strength and inspiration. The North Shore Towers management and engineering staff have provided the following update to last issue’s interview with Bd. President Dr. Stanley Goldsmith. Only the portion of the expansion joints will be replaced where required, which is mainly in the roadways. The expansion joint replacement portion of the project was estimated to be around $400,000 (not $1 million as stated last issue). The contractor was selected and approved by the board after drawings and plans were completed as part of the bid package. The structural concern was not from the leaking expansion joints, but rather the loading from the large trees on the garage deck. Although those trees have been removed, it is still necessary to address the structural integrity, officials said. Finally, they said that during rainstorms the open ramps will result in water within the garage itself despite resolution of the structural problems described.

Howard Kimmel Continued from Page 14 My dream was to live in the Village of Thomaston, which was in central Great Neck and was more affordable than other Great Neck communities. By then we had three children and were impressed with its excellent schools and location near the LIRR train station. I bought an old house in 1957 at 235 Scheck Avenue. It had a buildable lot next to it. I ignored the vacant house and built my home on the adjacent lot for $20,200. Years later I rehabilitated the old house and sold it for the original price of the double lot plus the cost of improving it. The resulting cost of the double lot became $0. Fifty-seven years later, I sold it for a substantial increase. What were some of your activities when living in Great Neck? I was a Village Board Trustee for 10 years and served on the Board of Zoning Appeals for another 10 years. The Village of Thomaston Civic association was largely my creation. In my 40 professional years at the Department of Housing, I managed the NYC Housing Authority, Trump Village, Co-op City and scores of other developments. I am most proud of my final seven years

when I created and planned the use of the Shared Housing Option Program (SHOP), which was utilized by over 100 New York State agencies. What is the SHOP Program? In 1982, I became the NYS official in charge of all senior citizens housing programs in the state. In 1984, together with my sister and brother, we set up the Anna and Philip Kimmel Foundation (APK) devoted to assisting seniors in need of affordable housing. Our crowning achievement was the Apex Senior Citizens Housing complex. What made it unique was that it included shared units. The shared units were designed to accommodate two unrelated seniors, who are matched as living companions by professional social workers. This was designed to reduce loneliness and further impoverishment. Apex was built by the not for profit APK. Each shared apartment has two large, 180 square foot bedrooms, and each bedroom has a three-fixture private bathroom. In the kitchen, there are two of everything, including two refrigerators. There is also a dining room and living room. At the outset, I rented these apartments for $830 per month, with each sharer paying $415 per month. Fifteen years later they paid $490 per month. It was built in the hamlet of New Cassel, with a Westbury

mailing address. As one woman living in Apex recalled, “Where I was living before, I cooked on a hot plate and washed my dishes in the bathtub. Now, for less money I have a full kitchen.” Apex II was built in 2009 for families, not single seniors. The Nassau County Police Department advised me against that area because of its high crime rate. They did give me support and the New Cassel area prospered. More shops opened and it became an area to go to, not escape from.

I invested 15 years of my life at Apex I and Apex II without monetary rewards but with a great deal of personal satisfaction. What keeps you busy now? My dear wife Sylvia and I moved into NST in March 2015. Unfortunately, Sylvia was never well enough to enjoy the many amenities and she passed away too soon. I became active in the Special Projects and Political Action Committees. A little over a year ago I had an operation that slowed me down. But, at 93, I stay active in the wonderful community in which I now live.
