Movie Theater Mavens Anne and Henry Stampfels’ Towers Cinema Plans

Anne and Henry Stamfel, the new operators of the North Shore Towers Cinema. down–operated the North Shore Towers Cinema. When Sidney retired, Henry was contacted by North Shore Towers officials, inquiring if the Stampfels would be interested in leasing and operating the co-op’s theater.

Anne and Henry are delighted with the magnificent, recently refurbished theater here and are looking forward to a happy, productive relationship with the residents, visitors and staff of North Shore Towers. The Stampfels are hoping to feature mainstream, art and foreign language films, special events, and perhaps even live shows. They also plan to take “baby steps” in introducing a small refreshment facility. They also explained that gift cards from the previous owner will not be accepted after April 30th.

Towers Bd. of Directors President Mort Gitter said, “Our new theater operator will provide us with current quality films and professional management that will significantly add to the enjoyment of our residents. We hope that more of our residents will take advantage of and support this amenity which is at their doorstep.”

Anne explained that to obtain films for showing, operators must be licensed by each film studio. A different production house makes every film, and a film booker negotiates contracts with the production house. Film distrib-

utors generally get about 50 per cent of box office income.

Major film distributors are located in New York as well as on the West Coast. The role of the movie projectionist has changed dramatically with the latest technology, and that person has basically become a computer operator showing digital images.

The Stampfels are an energetic, enthusiastic couple who are bringing the promise of warmth, experience and expertise to enrich and entertain the NST community– hopefully for years to come.

nne and Henry Stampfels’ lives read like a wonderful old film, and now they are the new operators of the North Shore Towers Cinema. These two born and bred Long Islanders come by their interest in the movie business quite naturally.

Anne’s mother once worked as an usherette in a Queens movie theater, where she wore a snappy uniform with a pillbox hat. As a youngster in Brooklyn, Henry’s father showed movies to neighborhood kids in the back of a local candy store for a modest fee.

The Stampfels met at the Oceanside Theater in 1978.

Anne had a job working as a secretary to a film booker in an office above the theater, and she took on a night job running the theater’s candy counter. Henry, who majored in communications at college, joined the Projectionists Union and worked in movie theaters all over Long Island, including Oceanside.

The couple married in 1980, had two daughters–now grown–and live in Massapequa. A friend of Henry’s opened the Malverne Theater and Anne started working there as a manager in 1981. In 1985, the Lido Theater in Long Beach, which had become rather disreputable, closed, and Anne and Henry negotiated a lease with the landlord, changed the name to the Park Avenue Theater, and brought popular family entertainment to local moviegoers. When the lease was up the landlord decided to run the theater himself. The theater has been closed since Hurricane Sandy damaged it extensively.

The Stampfels had already spread their wings and purchased the Bellmore Movies, an old-fashioned singlescreen house, in 1986, and then rented the Malverne Cinema in 1990, now a five-screen theater.

Over the years, Anne and Henry have met many residents of North Shore Towers who visited the Malverne Cinema. A gentleman named Sidney, who also owned the building that was once the Oceanside Theater–now torn

Shoshana Wind: A Physically Fit Pediatrician

H

ave you noticed an attractive young woman, wearing headphones, circling our property with a determined, athletic stride? She makes a left turn leaving NST, walks to Little Neck Pkwy, then Union Tpke., and comes up Lakeville Rd. completing her fourmile exercise. Weather and scheduling permitting this is a daily workout. (On occasion she walks to work.) She is Shoshana Wind of Building Three, a pediatrician at Pro Health.

Where did you grow up?

I was born and raised in Queens, attended Yeshiva University HS in Hollis and Queens College. From there I went to Chicago Medical School.

Fred Chernow What motivated you to become a doctor?

At age five I was hit by a car. My slow return to health

was guided by some caring doctors–especially pediatricians–and I decided back then to become one. I did my residency at North ShoreManhasset and worked 12 years at LI Jewish Urgent Care. For the past four years I’ve been a pediatrician at Pro HealthLake Success.

Why did you decide to train at Chicago Medical School?

As a native New Yorker I wanted the experience of being away and heard of the legendary Cook County Hospital where the TV show ER was based. I trained there and saw how close the TV drama came to actual hospital life. My mother watched every Thursday evening and on Friday called to tell me, “I hope you’re doing better than Dr. Carter,” played by Noah Wylie, who we all thought was a pretty good medical student.

What do you find so satisfying about pediatrics?

We work with newborns until they are 18 and watch them grow into adulthood. I particularly like talking to mothers after delivery–especially first-time mothers.

Early in my career I was assigned to a mother who delivered quadruplets. Getting these underweight newborns off to a good start was a challenge for both of us. I still remember another case where a mother came in with a one year old who woke up from his nap and wouldn’t take his bottle. An X-ray didn’t reveal anything. When I removed my tongue depressor from his mouth it carried out a gummed sticker which he casually removed from

a child’s book when starting his nap. Once this paper obstruction was gone he guzzled his bottle.

What’s new in Pediatric Medicine?

There’s a current focus on obesity prevention. We’re alert to early signs and plot every visit comparing height and weight with desired outcomes. Much attention is given to the importance of nutrition training for parents and a commitment to appropriate exercise for the child. The biggest change I’ve seen in the past 12 years is reliance on electronic medical records. Patients benefit from retrieval of information on a data base as well as the emailing of prescriptions. Also, the continued training and testing of pediatricians.

We’re required to take Board exams every 10 years. Part of my current job is teaching pediatrics to residents and I employ a “See One-Do One-Teach-One” approach. When I see a worthwhile new technique, I do it, and then teach it to my residents.

How do you relax after your stressful work days?

Two of my favorite amenties at NST are the gym and pool areas. My city friends who visit say I live in a resort. I agree. It’s one of the reasons I moved to NST. Yes, it’s like living in a resort. It is a perfect lifestyle, especially for those of us who are busy working and are always on the go. NST provides a variety of fitness programs with flexible hours. I’m partial to my Spin Class (high-speed bike for 60 minutes) and the Reformer machine for stretching and strengthening my core. I look forward to the Pilates and body blast classes as well as as water volleyball and aqua zumba.

Do you have any food vices?

My father was a rabbi and I follow Kosher dietary laws. But that does not stop me from starting each day with a cup of coffee from Starbucks. The baristas know me and they prepare my black Trenta take-out as soon as they see me enter the store. A Trenta is 30 ounces of high octane, fully caffeinated coffee. I’m not a snacker, but do enjoy ice cream at home–coffee flavored, of course.

NST Men’s Club Report

T

he movie that we viewed at our February Men’s Club meeting was titled “Love Him Or Hate Him. Ed Koch was New York in the 1980s.” It could have just as easily been titled “How’m I Doing,” a catch phrase that will live in the minds of a generation of New Yorkers. Although the word hate was in the title, the movie was more like a paean to his administration. He was the archetypical New Yorker: brash, nervy, always ready with an extemporaneous quip or answer. One always knew where he stood. The movie showed him exhilarated by his successes and depressed by unfavorable events. It also spent some time examining his sexual preference.

Was he or wasn’t he? In one scene, a direct question was asked of him to which he responded with a most un-mayorly expletive. But in truth, he did have a lifelong lover–The City of New York.

Our speaker at our April meeting will be Jack Belello, a novelist and historian. He was born and raised in Brooklyn, received a Fulbright Scholarship and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Kappa Delta Pi honorary fraternities. One of his novels titled “Bonds of War” is a WW II-Vietnam historical fiction. Another, titled “American Patrol,” is a suspense action thriller. It was a publisher’s nomination for The National Book Award.

Future events planned are a guided tour of the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Glen Cove on April 29th, a catered barbecue, a trip to Atlantic City and a dinner in June, as well as another fishing trip and Brooklyn Cyclones baseball game in July.

Our dinner at Giardino’s in Douglaston on February 25th which was attended by 39 members and guests, was very successful.

We had a private room and judging by the voice level, a good time was had by all. A big thank you to Joe DiGiovanni and Jerry Gilbert for making all the arrangements.

Our snow bird branch in Florida is quite active and the guiding spirit, of course, is our president, Al Fuchs. About a third of our men’s club snowbirds winter on Florida’s east coast. In the last few months, they have had some very successful activities such as dinner dances, brunches, even a cruise on the Inter-Coastal. If by any chance you are reading this while basking in the sun around a pool on an 85 degree day, or know someone who is there and is not aware of these activities and would like to attend, call Al Fuchs at (917) 612-5350.

Our Tuesday and Wednesday morning breakfasts in the VIP room at 9:15 continue to attract a nice crowd. Come join us. Responses to Robert Ricken’s Letter It is always easier to be critical rather than constructive. Steve Silverman has spent long hours planning the concert/film series. He has chosen varied selections from rock stars, pop, classical music and crooners. It stands to reason that rock star concerts will be louder than the others. We have the opportunity to attend what we want and not attend what we do not want.

It seems that our time would be better spent thanking Steve for all his efforts instead of “assuming” a hidden meaning in a phrase.

I didn’t find the volume too loud at the rock concerts. It sounded about right for this type of concert. Of course I was not sitting right up front by the screen and the speakers. I wouldn’t sit there because it can get loud and uncomfortable. That’s the way it is. I prefer sitting toward the rear of the VIP room. Much less rumble. It is very considerate of Steve to advise everyone that the volume would be appropriate for the music. Looking around at these concerts, I noticed that the room was always filled. Residents of all ages were in attendance. Many people were singing along and some were even dancing in the aisles.

Some even left before the end of the program. It seemed to me that everyone was having a good time.

As for Robert Ricken’s letter, I think he should be ashamed of himself. He should know better than anyone that “you can’t make everyone happy at the same time.”

In the couple of years that we have lived here, we have been truly impressed with the facilities, the activities and the programs that are offered. We believe they are carefully chosen and quite varied, appealing to a wide range of audience interests.

That being said, we have often remarked that they are so wise and caring to announce that the volume of some of the presentations in the VIP room will be “loud.” Forewarned is forearmed.

As a resident, you now know what to expect, and if you don’t care for the increased volume level that the presentation forecasts, you have the choice and the option not to attend that particular function.

Certainly there are more than enough en-

tertainment offerings to choose from.

Instead of criticizing Steve Silverman and the other dedicated, hard working and well meaning volunteers who make the concerts, shows and movies available to us, we should be thanking them publicly and privately. Their efforts help to make North Shore Towers the outstanding community it is.

So, on our behalf, we would like to express thanks and appreciation to all involved in bringing this fine entertainment to us.

Bob alleges people have left VIP Room events due to volume. Really? People leave concerts for many reasons. At the premieres of Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring” and Beethoven’s symphonies, people not only left the hall, they rioted. Should we ban those works lest some be offended?

Bob says he has “…never heard advertised…music will be kept loud for your better concert experience!” Irrelevant.

Anyone attending live rock or symphonic concerts understands that volume will be loud. Our volunteers are notifying people the recorded experience will be as loud as the live event.

Further, Bob’s argument is not just irrelevant, it is inaccurate. There are Broadway shows that do contain warnings, such as “Strobe effects in tonight’s performance,” or “This performance contains loud sounds.” Performances of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture contained warnings about cannons on stage. “Volume will be loud” is a similar consumer advisory helping members decide whether any evening’s entertainment is for them.

Our unpaid–and underappreciated–volunteers strive to expand entertainment offerings that reflect diverse interests of our members. For this, they should be applauded, not summoned to the principal’s office.

It’s a shame that misguided complaints by very few will deny the vast majority what has been, until now, successful and wellreceived programming.

NST Book Report Bob Ricken: Saxons S.A.C. Saga

By Fred Chernow Bob Ricken, recently retired President of North Shore Towers and prolific author, has written a book that will tug at the heart of every reader no matter their gender or residential origin.

It is a coming-ofage story of 16 11year-old boys growing up in Crown Heights.

It could easily be Washington Heights or Jackson Heights or any other part of New York City. Their mutual bond was a social-athletic club known as the Saxons S.A.C., complete with satin jackets. They organized as seventh graders during World War II and are still in frequent contact more than 70

years later.

Bob’s narrative takes us through their nascent sexuality, military service, careers, family, reunions and the ultimate separation as 10 of the 16 take their final leave. Dozens of photos put faces to the names and illustrate lots of memorabilia.

And what wonderful nicknames they have: Buddy, Moose, Kid, Chink and Denny are just a few.

Bob ends with: “This book is our love story. We all had siblings but were blessed by also having 15 brothers.” Saxons S.A.C. 1942-Eternity” was published

Arlene Kurtis Publishes First Novel “You are never too old to try something new,” said Arlene Kurtis, a summer resident of Building 3. “I have been a writer my whole adult life–exclusively non-fiction–a history of Puerto Rico, a bio of an Israeli pioneer, articles in Midstream, the New York Times, and the Tower Times. But two years ago I took a break to try to let my imagination run free and Lila’s Hamsa, a Novel of Love and Deception is the result.”

The author says writing it was full of surprises. “The characters take on a life of their own, dictating what they must do in response to circumstances I set up,” she said.

In the story, Lila is given a hamsa by her Jewish friend. The hamsa is a charm that is shaped like a hand and is thought by Jews and Muslims to bring good luck and ward off the evil eye. Her Jewish friend is concerned that Lila is about to marry an older man whom she doubts will make Lila happy. As she feared, the marriage is a disaster. But the charm’s magic kicks when Lila, who is assumed to be a Jew because of the amulet she wears, is welcomed by a synagogue community where she hides from her husband for nearly four years.

During that time she meets a man whom

she can truly love but who distances himself from her when her deception is revealed.

“It’s a feel good story,” Hana Seigelstein commented upon reading the book. And in a review, Rabbi Jack Riemer called it a “fast moving novel, with many twists and turns, that keep the reader’s attention all the way. It is refeshing to read a book that shows the beauty and the value of synagogue life, as this one does. There are so many books that mock Jewish life or that show a total lack of knowledge of it that this book is a delight by contrast.”

Elyse Sommer, a theater reviewer wrote on Amazon.com, “A touching story of love and connectedness with a touch of mystery. You don’t have to be Jewish to enjoy.”

Kurtis muses that writing this story, and other articles, became a solace when her husband died. “It wasn’t like entering an empty apartment–I came home to my characters,” she says.

Winter Pool Party Despite the snow flurries, it really was spring. Country Club members were not able to gather at the outdoor pool yet, but they did hold an indoor pool party, Friday night, March 31st. Club members gathered for an evening filled with swimming, a DJ, cash bar and snacks.

Ronald McDonald House Charlie Chazan, the Ronald McDonald House volunteer who came to speak about the great work they accomplish, found only a small crowd waiting to hear his presentation, Wednesday, March 22nd. The recently expanded

House now has 42 rooms, each with a private bath and eight kitchen stations, which can accommodate at least 500 additional families per year.

APRIL 2011 Obituary: Lester Reiss, 94 Lester Reiss, a 32-year resident of the Towers, active member of the UJA Federation, leader of troops liberating a concentration camp, professional baseball player, and businessman, died in Palm Beach, Florida, Saturday, February 12th. He was 94.

Reiss and his wife, Ellie, moved from Chicago to North Shore Towers in 1979. He served as President of the Men’s Golf Club and was very involved in the Towers United Jewish Appeal efforts for over a quarter century, helping to raise millions of dollars with their annual Golf Tournament and Dinner-Dance.

The inevitable response is “to our children.” Without an agreement in place, however, the new spouse will have elective share rights (discussed above) to the estate. Moreover, even if the widow or widower doesn’t remarry, he or she may develop a cognitive impairment and be prey to con artists as well as an assortment of financial liabilities. The ‘post-nup’ can require the surviving spouse to adhere to the estate plan originally agreed upon.

$32M Cleanup of Unisys Site A $32 million state-ordered cleanup is planned for the former Unisys Corporation’s site, North Shore Towers’ Lake Success neighbor. The contaminated groundwater plume underneath the location has spread to over 900 acres, and extraction wells will be installed to remedy the situation. Monitoring stations will track toxins and some nearby wells will be treated as well.

The work is scheduled to begin around the end of this year, will last approximately 30 years, and will be paid for by Lockhead Martin who inherited the debt. Chemicals such as trichloroethene (TCE), tetrachloroethene (PCE) and 1,2-dichloroethene (DCE) were found 100 to 400 feet in the ground at different areas.

The site itself was cleaned up in 1997, but the plume gradually moved far beyond that underground.

The pollution caused by the former Unisys defense plant site, located at the intersection of Marcus Ave. and Lakeville Rd. in Lake Success, has been traveling northwest for 70 years, but no contaminants have been released into the air as a result of golf course irrigation, according to scientific analysis done in 2001. The NST golf course was tested by the NY State Health Dept.,

and was used as a representative sampling of the four courses in the area irrigating using well water.

during WWII, a temporary United Nations in the 1940s, and a military gyrocompass manufacturing plant in the 1950s. It is now luxury offices and medical facilities.

The doors opened and closed behind me because I didn’t fit. But I was determined and wiggled my way until I fit and the doors closed. At the 34th street station, I took the elevator down with two other people, a man pushing a box on a hand truck and a young woman with crutches.

The three of us rode down the elevator and walked to the turnstile gate. The man with the hand truck went first. I turned to the woman on crutches and told her I would hold the door open for her and backed out.

I wasn’t looking and almost fell backwards over the man’s hand truck. I didn’t notice that he didn’t walk away from the door before turning his hand truck around which would have allowed the people behind him to walk through. Luckily, I was holding onto the door with one hand and was able to regain my balance. Otherwise, I would have done a backward somersault and would have been seriously hurt.

The man with the hand truck accused me that it was my own fault by saying “You should have waited longer lady.”

I regained my composure and ran through Penn Station.

My train was already loading. I pulled my bag behind me excusing my rudeness as I maneuvered my way through the crowd. Every so often I heard a derogatory remark but I didn’t stop to apologize. I did make my train, found a seat and wondered about my sense of decency.

Was I a good person? Does holding the door for a person on crutches override the rest of my behavior? I could justify my rudeness with; it was necessary for me to catch my train or I’m a New Yorker; everyone behaves this way. I guess I’m not better or worse than anyone else.

I just hope those Pearly Gates open when I get there.
