Holocaust Remembered

I

n 1945, a faulty gas chamber shower head at Auschwitz concentration camp saved the life of Vera Eden. The North Shore Towers resident shared her moving story at the co-op’s annual Yom HaShoah Holocaust Remembrance Day program, Thursday, May 2nd at the Towers on the Green.

Eden grew up in Munkacs, Czechoslovakia in a large family that included her cousin, Eva Ebin, who also later moved to NST. Under the Munich Agreement, Czechoslovakia surrendered part of its territory to Germany and anti-Semitism grew. In March of 1944, the German army invaded Hungary, and Eden recalled, “Within a few weeks we were in a ghetto, all wearing golden stars.”

Arriving at Auschwitz by train, she was separated from her mother. It was the last time she would see her. She and her two cousins agreed to stay together but endured having their heads shaved before they were marched into showers that could also deliver poison gas. They were told they could keep only their shoes.

Her cousin survived scarlet and typhoid fevers. Then in November 1944, they were moved into the MauthausenGusen concentration camp. The war came to an end and as they fled the Germans locked their prisoners in the camp without food. The French legionnaires that found the prisoners described them as “walking skeletons.”

Eden later met her husband, Joseph, also a survivor, and she taught Hebrew for over 50 years. Her cousin Ebin became a psychiatrist.

Turning 92 in June, Eden has lived at the Towers for 40 years. She moved to the co-op after her husband passed away, and enjoys the companionship the community provides. “There are nice people here and nice programs,” she said. When asked what was the most important lesson she

learned in her lifetime, Eden replied, “to fight discrimination wherever it starts.”

The program’s host, Eva Kessner, said she thought the evening was a great success. “The speaker was amazing and it was a real privilege to hear someone who was an actual witness,” she said. “This was not an easy thing for her to do, and her story was very compelling.”

Eneas Arkawy said the program was presented beautifully. “The guest speaker brought tears to your eyes,” she said. “They had a tremendous turnout and I was so proud of all the love and caring that went into it. May we always continue to remember from the bottom of our hearts.”

Chairman of the NST Special Projects Committee Bob Ricken discussed serving as coordinator of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and working with director Steven Spielberg to get Holocaust survivors to give their testimony for the Shoah Foundation. Towers resident Larry Zellner told Ricken his account and agreed to give testimony after not talking about it for 60 years. “I will remember Larry’s story for the rest of my life,” Ricken said.

The ADL helped start the Glen Cove Holocaust Museum that hosted talks by Holocaust survivors, such as former NST Bd. Director Herb Cooper, who spoke to classes of young students. “His story gave them a permanent and personal vision of the slaughter of men, women, and children,” Ricken said.

The Yom HaShoah program included Towers survivors lighting candles in remembrance. “Each year we have fewer witnesses to tell their stories,” Ricken continued.

It’s more than 70 partner organizations in the New York area alone provide services like emergency cash assistance, access to kosher food pantries and soup kitchens, mental health counseling and legal advocacy through partners like the Jewish Board, the Safe Center, and Education Alliance on the Lower Eastside. Other partners, like the Sid Jacobson JCC, the Samuel Field Y, and Camp Kehilla provide educational resources and fun activities for people of all ages, especially children, seniors and those with special needs.

L’dor v’dor (from generation to generation). One special UJA-funded program helping shape the Jewish future is the Witness Project. Holocaust survivors and students in the Witness Project program meet twice a month at partner Sid Jacobson JCC. Participants form close bonds as survivors share their stories of war and trauma, loss and survival in a therapeutic setting, facilitated by a program director and social workers. The collaboration culminates in an art exhibit and multimedia performance in which students use theater, music, and art to depict the survivors’ stories.

The program helps survivors tell their stories in order to bring them a sense of emotional closure and healing. Students receive a close look at a critical time in Jewish history and are inspired by survivors’ endurance and resilience. Everyone who’s seen one of these productions, regardless of their faith, talks of how emotionally affecting it is, with many tearing up.

NST and UJA: The Dynamic Duo. For 40 years, North Shore Towers has had a special relationship with UJA–Federation, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars to support its charitable work. Eneas Arkawy, Chairperson of the North Shore TowersUJA Fundraising Committee, shared some thoughts: “In such uncertain times, UJA’s purpose has never been clearer. For more than 100 years, it has been at the forefront of change, adapting to meet the ever-evolving needs of a dynamic community and building a future that we want for ourselves, our children and our grandchildren.”

This year’s 40th Anniversary UJA Fundraising Dinner: Celebrating Our Jewish Future, will honor three exceptional North Shore Towers residents: Shirley Wershba, legendary broadcast industry pioneer, TV producer and writer (Business Leadership Award), Dr. Stanley Goldsmith, Nuclear Medicine expert and Chairperson of the NST Board of Directors (Leadership Award), and Judy Lev, Senior Vice President of Wealth Management at Morgan Stanley and tireless fundraiser for cancer survivors (Community Service Award). Shahar Azani, former spokesperson of the Consulate General of Israel, will be the guest speaker and provide fascinating insights on growing worldwide anti-Semitism. This year’s dinner will also raise funds for Sid Jacobson JCC’s Camp Kehilla, a ground-breaking day camp program for special needs children.

Towers Investment Club

By Bud Bank The North Shore Tower Investment Club had their May meeting on Tuesday, May 14th in the Coleridge lounge. Judy Lev, of Morgan Stanley, gave a presentation called “How to Prepare your Portfolio for a Possible Future Change.” The meeting was longer than usual because of all of the questions by our members.

2019 is going to be very interesting and challenging, but no one should panic. Be very careful how you invest.

Meetings are generally held on the second Tuesday of the month.

The club has been in continuous operation the last 15 years and is apart of the National Association of Investment Clubs. Member clubs are currently active in most states of the U.S. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, June 18th. Jewish Gangsters Who Were Good to their Mothers

peaking of a full house, Professors Howard Ehrlich and Harvey Sackowitz of St. Johns University presented a program of humor and irony on Wednesday night, April 24th for the Women’s Club in the large card room. In his introduction, Professor Ehrlich cited the similarities of the Cosa Nostra and “Kosher Nostra,” and stated that “Italians are really one of the Lost Tribes of Israel.” He discussed how his own Uncle Sam, a criminal since childhood, was still adored by his own mother because he always sent her to the Catskills Mountains for the summer. Uncle Sam ended up in Sing Sing prison–but was always good to his mother.

The professors went on to describe the neighborhood of Brownsville in East New York in the 1940s. As the largest Jewish community in the world at that time, it spawned Murder Inc., and the criminal careers of Abe Reles, Bugsy Seigel, Samuel “Red” Levine, and Meyer Lansky, to name a few. In addition to murder, income tax evasion, and black market activity, the Jewish Mafia was also known to be patriotic and family-loving.

The blending of Italian and Jewish gangsters in Murder, Inc. led to the ownership of

hotels in Cuba, and lifestyles that involved fancy clothes, bulletproof chauffeur driving cars, and murdering anyone that got in their way.

The question was raised: “Would an orthodox Jew commit murder on the Sabbath?”

Whether they were sociopaths or psychopaths, the members of Murder, Inc. had an organized hierarchy of punks, mobsters, VIP gangsters, regular gangsters, a vice president, and chairman of the board, comprising their world of power and criminal behavior. Inherent in the code of behavior for the Jewish Mafia was the premise that family was outside the realm of involvement. Love of country, love of family– and take good care of mama.

Cinema Club: A successful discussion of the film “Never Look Away” was held in April by the Cinema Club leader Vicki Mazel, with Dr. Neurit Israeli, giving insightful character analysis and Irene Frank’s extensive art background, providing an informative description of art in the film. Both Women’s Club members, we welcome their expertise and invaluable participation in our program. Currently, we are reviewing “Red Joan” and will keep you advised of further review choices. We lost three men of our group to the enemy guns, but our operation was deemed a success. It made the latter heroic landing of LSTs possible.

Do you think about your Navy years?

It put me in tip-top physical shape, it taught me how to fend for myself, and to stand my ground in the face of bigotry. I loved the uniform, those bell-bottom pants, they had some meaning for us Navy men.

Even though we fought one another for stupid reasons, when we had some drinks in our bellies, we still fought as one unit, and that’s how we won the war.

NST Men’s Club Welcomes Graphologist

By Arnie Rabinowitz The North Shore Towers Men’s Club welcomed speaker and graphologist, Irwin Pfeffer, to discuss the topic of graphology, which is the study of handwriting, on Thursday, May 9th, Pfeffer was introduced by Fred Chernow.

Pfeffer is the author of four books, has appeared on both radio and TV shows, and has lectured extensively on graphology and many other subjects.

Pfeffer gave his lecture on the topic of graphology, which is the study of handwriting. It is used to discover emotions, personality, and characteristics through penmanship. Graphology is described by most as a pseudoscience. Personally, I subscribe to the pseudoscience school of thought. Sadly, letter writing has become a dying art. When was the last time you wrote a letter?

Pfeffer gave us some background information regarding handwriting analysis.

According to him, script is considered more accurate and credible compared to print.

Handwriting should be on unlined paper for the best results.

Pfeffer then shared with us a story about a couple who were planning to get married

and wanted their handwriting analyzed beforehand. He explained to us that if he ever sees something negative or undesirable in a situation, he would never disclose that information. However, in this particular situation, he felt both good and bad. In analyzing these couples handwriting, Pfeffer drew the conclusion that the two were not well suited for one another. Unfortunately, he was correct about his analysis, as the couple did not make it through their honeymoon.

Pfeffer ended his lecture by analyzing the handwriting of three people in the audience.

However, this was done in private. In fact, it was so private that the rest of us were never told of the results. Overall, his lecture was both interesting and humorous.

The following morning the men’s club met for breakfast, as they do three times a week.

As usual, the discussions were eclectic and lively. A few enjoyed last night’s presentation, while some didn’t. On another note, the stock market had been tanking due to the possible 25 percent tariffs placed on Chinese imports. discuss it. I too approved of their discussion regarding the market, thinking that if I had known them a few years ago I might be living in a larger apartment.

Another topic that morning was the price of haircuts. I always go back to my old barber at Bell Blvd and 73rd Ave in Bayside. A men’s haircut is $14 plus a tip, which is what most pay. Some of the men at the table go to the shop next to the Bagel Boss in the Lake Success Shopping Center.

According to them, they pay $20. Coming in at the highest price was Howard Kimmel at $40. After all, he has hair!

Book Club: ‘The Banker’s Wife’

By Carol Klinger The author of “The Banker’s Wife,” Christina Alger, graciously came to our book club on Monday, May 18th, here at North Shore Towers. We spent a delightful evening discussing her book and her background. Alger is a graduate of Harvard and is an attorney. She worked in the financial world and is now writing fiction and taking care of her two children–and is expecting a third.

The “Banker’s Wife” tells the story of Annabel, the wife, whose husband works in offshore banking. While on a business trip his plane crashes. Marina, a reporter who is investigating a crime is the other major character in the book. Alger talked about the story and informed us that the book will soon be made into a movie appearing

As the meeting was held in my apartment, and I was the designated moderator, I wanted to make the night interesting, so I took a risk and invited Christina Alger to join us for the evening. I wrote to her on her website hoping she would accept my invitation. To my surprise, she immediately agreed to come. She arrived at our monthly meeting and was informative and as pleasant as could be. She talked about how she combined the adventures of the two women into one story by alternating each chapter. The evening also went on to discuss other aspects of the book as well as her own background, her appearance at our book club was very special and we thank the author for her reaching out to her readers in this way.

Hadassah Women Stand Up

By Dee Dee Goidel The word anti-Semitism was not even known until 1879. The Anti-Defamation League and Hadassah have done much historically to stand up to those forces that recycle such hate.

On Wednesday, June 5th, we have the honor of seeing Queens Borough President Melinda Katz, who will address the current problem of the rise of anti-Semitism in many localities and what steps can be taken to ameliorate this serious issue. The meeting will take place at 7:00 pm in the large card room in the sub-basement level of Building Two. The Hadassah Migdal Chapter ’s membership is extending an invitation to all who reside at North Shore Towers to attend the event.

Borough President Katz was born in Queens and comes from a Jewish family

with a long history of civic commitment and involvement. David Katz, her father, was the founder of the Queens Symphony Orchestra, and her mother, Jeanne Dale Katz, founded the Queens Council on the Arts. Melinda earned her law degree at St. John’s Law School and practiced law before being elected to the New York State Assembly.

Then, wishing to become closer to serving her constituents, she was elected to the New York City Council, representing a large Queens District. In 2013 she was elected as Queens Borough President and has served with distinction in that role to date. Due to her efforts, the Borough of Queens has flourished economically and culturally, becoming a destination for visitors.

The New York Daily News named her “one of the 100 up-and-coming young leaders of the 21st century.”

Towers Cares for the Needy

By Beverly Bord The North Shore Towers Political Action Committee-Community Outreach Program, co-chaired by Beverly Bord and Arlene Greenwood, has launched a successfully received ongoing program of a collection of items for the needy in the community.

The program, which is under the auspices of Commonpoint Y, is overseen by Judith Vladimir and Sam Schachter.

For your convenience, the brown hamper-looking collection bins in which items are placed are located in each of the North Shore Towers mailbox rooms. The following is a calendar of the monthly

collection items for the next three months: June: Knitting yarn to benefit the Y’s Giving Dolls program.

July: Baby clothes, baby food, wipes, and sunscreen.

August: New school supplies to benefit local school districts and school programs.

No packages of food, please. Food is provided by shelter/food pantry. All donations must be sealed, new and storebought.

Congratulations! Building Three in North Shore Towers was the first building to fill the April bin located in their mailbox room.
