LORD GREY CAN!

Lord Grey Academy is delighted to report that we have won the Inspiring Secondary School award at the Milton Keynes Inspiration Awards! This achievement reflects the hard work put in by our staff and students to prove that Lord Grey Can

Inspiration is something we express in our core school values of ambition and curiosity The concept speaks to the power of ideas, and we have worked to embody our values and show that they can bring about real change

“We are absolutely thrilled to receive this award and thank all those who voted for us Lord Grey Academy is a community who work together to support young people to be the best they can be We believe that every child can where our character values are at the heart of what we do! Our dedicated and hardworking team of staff and Governors are probably the best I’ve ever worked with: Lord Grey Can!”

We are grateful for the positive change brought about from our relationship with the Tove Learning Trust, which has allowed us to flourish

Again, thank you to everybody who made this possible!

Paris Saint-Germain Football Academy

This year saw the beginning of our highly promising relationship with Paris Saint-Germain’s English football academy. Our growing relationship with PSG has been a great source of pride for our school, as the quality of sportsmanship demonstrated by this professional club is the same level of quality we seek to emulate with our core character values throughout the school

We are also confident that working with PSG can ensure that young people in the local community can get access to the highest quality football training available to youths, and we believe that introducing this high standard of training will reflect our aspiration to offer the highest standard of education in everything we do as a school.

"The Easter camp was so great, all the coaches were so nice and helped everyone out. It was such a good experience. "

Sports is a key area where our values can shine through, and is an environment where competition can be healthy and respectful. It is these aspects of sports that we want to celebrate, and we are very proud of the students who performed in a manner worthy of that celebration!

Following a summer of successful Science exam results which saw LG Science students secure places in their first choice Universities, Science started its first full year of Practical activities since restrictions lifted; we were glad to bring back the Science club and Lego Challenge as after-school events in September.

6th Form students were able to ask questions to, and enjoy talks from, the greatest Biologists in their fields such as Professor Lord Robert Winston during Biology Live in London this year and to attend University placements in Chemistry at Nottingham University by partnership with the Sutton Trust.

Key Stage 3 students are now looking at some of the less understood but more exciting career opportunities within Science such as Glaciologists, Volcanologists or Palaeontologists. This year has seen Science forge new links and opportunities with Education and Employment locally; The Enthuse partnership which works

Geography

This year has been a big year for geographical news stories, and as always we have incorporated recent and current issues into our lessons in order to engage students with the world around them In particular, the devastating earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria back in February came at such a time as to be directly influential to students’ learning of plate tectonics and natural hazards. The recent announcement that the Earth is once again experiencing an El Niño event is also really useful when helping our GCSE students to investigate the impacts of global warming and climate change.

Tree Planting Scheme

This year, the Geography department had the exciting opportunity to involve some of our Year 8 students in a tree planting scheme, in order to improve the natural environment and encourage development of biodiversity and sustainable landscapes Mr Oliver took the students to a wild meadow, which was planted up to create a new woodland. Sixth Form students also carried out fieldwork at the Amersham Field Studies Centre; this was to enable them to develop knowledge and understanding of infiltration and interception rates with regard to the water cycle

This topic area is a really important factor in all of our lives, due to climate change resulting in an increased risk of flooding in cities across the UK Our Sixth Form students were also lucky enough to have a talk given to them by Paul Hammond from Milton Keynes City Council, whereby they were able to find out how Bletchley has changed over the years, and consider the new plans for its future development.

Creative Technology

In the Art Department Dr Layden ran a successful Sculpture Club to coincide with the MK Gallery Young Sculpture competition. Each student's work was entered and selected to be included in the exhibition at the Milton Keynes Gallery Project Space.

MK Young Sculptor celebrates the variety of creativity we have within our young people in Milton Keynes. We have previously shared our winners #Lordgreycan!

The Art club in the Autumn term worked hard to create a series of endangered animals of the British Isles, that were requested for and are displayed at our Student Services

Our year 10 Art students got to take part in a workshop on 13th of June which was run by Louise Izod and Ciara Callaghan from Brunel Centre This workshop was connected to students' portfolios, particularly the “Identity” project, and enriched students' ideas development

A Photography Club was set up by Mr Kravec for year 9 students and ran for most of the year We managed to establish collaboration with The Friends of Bletchley Station which resulted in students' work being exhibited at Bletchley train station from the end of June till the end of summer. There is an opportunity to extend this collaboration in the future

Year 11 GCSE Textile students took part in a one day workshop to help boost their skills and develop their ideas in a range of different materials and techniques Year 11 Art, Textiles and Ceramic students also got the opportunity to visit a major exhibition at the Milton Gallery Trickster Figures: Sculpture and the Body, an exciting and inspiring collection of modern British sculpture, to start them off on their exam project.

Food and DT

Year 10 Food Studies students were given the opportunity to attend a talk and demonstration by the charity Animal Aid. This helped to develop students' understanding of ethical reasons for food choice and incited class discussions and lively debate with charity representatives The students then watched a live cooking demonstration and tried 'chili without carne' (carne means meat in Spanish) made using protein alternatives. Our students enjoyed the food and were pleasantly surprised with the taste and texture of the dish

2023 has seen a year where our Food Technology department has developed a working relationship with MK College Year 10 students from both Food Preparation and Hospitality and Catering courses have been to visit the college restaurant; watched a live cooking demonstration which focused on the presentation and preparation of fresh fish. Our students the had the opportunity to create choux pastry in the college's professional kitchen The students responded well to this asking probing questions and thoroughly enjoying the free hot chocolate.

Students in the year 11 Design and Technology classes met with James Dougall, a Goldsmith jeweller, who came to visit Lord Grey Academy and speak to the students about his work. The students were shown 22K gold rings, handcrafted bracelets, bags of different coloured diamonds and ingots of various metals. (All were safely returned at the end of the lesson!) James spoke about the properties of working with different metals and how to construct shapes and designs The class were then introduced to the debate of recycling old jewellery, the ethics of diamonds and modern alternatives to gems that are artificially created

And finally we celebrated the hard work of all our year 11 students within the Creative Technologies Faculty We put on an End of Year Show celebrating all the hard work the students had put into their GCSEs, inviting parents and staff to celebrate their success.

Maths

On the 26th April, 30 students from Year 7 and 8 took part in the Annual UKMT Junior Mathematical Challenge. Some students had been attending weekly practice sessions hosted by Mrs Montgomery and Mr Waine to improve their problem solving skills and many others worked independently to develop their knowledge and mathematical reasoning

We are incredibly proud of all of the students who took part and definitely demonstrated that Lord Grey Can! We had a fantastic set of results including 4 Gold awards (George; Max; Cameron; Subhan) 8 Silver awards (Aleksas; Charlie; GracieMay; James; Eva; Kayleigh; Olly & Stanley) and 9 Bronze awards (Ceasar; Charlotte; Ion; Mitchell; Tom; Wahid; Lucus; Malachi & Ruby).

A huge congratulations to everyone who took part, representing our school in a national competition and demonstrating our Character Values so brilliantly.

Tricky Questions!

This is an example of one of the maths questions our students had to answer. See if you can work out the answer to these questions yourself! These types of challenges definitely stretch the brain and it takes a lot of determination and ambition to tackle questions such as these in a competitive context and even get gold!

Religious Studies

The Year 8 Religious Studies Department has recently been working on ways to help bring more awareness to topics that promote kindness to everyone In particular we have been researching ‘How can we end and reduce suffering in the world?’. Students looked into the lives of many people from both religious and non-religious backgrounds who changed the world for the better

In particular we would like to congratulate Lilly, who demonstrated the Lord Grey Values every single lesson with a very positive ‘can do’ attitude. For this topic, Lilly completed a significantly detailed research project and prepared a social media page for all the dedicated work that Mother Teresa did throughout her lifetime

Criminology

The Criminology Department has had a fortunate time recently, with the emergence of new information about cold and old cases providing the opportunity for students to explore the ways in which a crime scene is used to contribute to the discovery of the cause of death and the identification of a perpetrator They have enjoyed delving into real life cases rather than just drawing on textbook material and are now working their way from the crime scene itself towards an exploration of how the evidence collected at the crime scene is processed.

We have students who have already identified the Law as a future career direction, and others who are considering Forensic Psychology and a career in prison or police work, as well as those for whom this subject is a stepping stone to less directly related vocations in which the skills that they transfer from Criminology will be well used.

Students also produced work on the murder of Stephen Lawrence, exploring how racial prejudice and police neglect impeded bringing all his murderers to justice This activity shows the wider sociological context of criminal activity, while also giving students a clear example of how bias can work against justice This speaks to the reality that criminology should be just as much about values as about methodology

History

In January, we had the honour of participating in Holocaust Remembrance Day at MK Rose. Our two sixth form students did us proud by reading their reflections and meeting with our local dignitaries, including the Mayor and the Lord Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire. This was a sad event that reminded us of the importance of studying history to find moral instruction.

In July we also held Genocide Awareness Day, thanks to our partnership with Paul Salver who works with the Holocaust Education Trust and Remembering Srebrenica These foundations carry out extensive work with schools in Buckinghamshire, helping to educate students about the dangers of hatred and racism

As a school we will continue to educate on core moral values, rather than simply historical facts

In addition, we heard a personal story of a survivor of the Rwandan genocide of 1994 The conflict between Hutu and Tutsi resulted in the deaths of over one million people

Individuals like this, really show how history is living right now, and it's there for our hardworking students to discover. Our students showed considerable curiosity and civility in how they approach these sensitive issues Thank you to everybody who is willing to tell their stories so we can learn from the past while we move forward

Level 2 Child Development and Care students have been learning about the development of 0-5 year olds: their care routines, play and activity They also explored the debate between nature and nurture in a child's behaviour Students were even tasked with taking care of a "baby" for the weekend, receiving a bag with clothes, nappies and toys to get them through it

Level 3 Sport and Physical Activity students have learnt about the world of sport and its structure, as well as human anatomy and physiology as part of their exams They have also had to research, plan, deliver and evaluate sessions for KS3 students, as well as planning and running a Year 7 Inter House Sports Festival.

Level 3 Sports Leaders have been busy completing their theory part of their course, writing lesson plans and delivering lessons The importance of inclusion in sporting events was also explored as a challenging aspect of designing competitions The leaders have delivered lunchtime athletics clubs at Slated Row School, assisted with Chestnuts Primary and Abbeys Primary school sports days as well as supporting the Lord Grey Academy sports days Students earned 16 UCAS points towards their university application.

Level 2 Public Services students have covered lots in their one year course They developed their map reading and compass skills, when completing a two day, one night expedition in rural Buckinghamshire

Level 2 Sport Science students took part in a heart dissection, and engaged in a rigorous physical fitness test. Performing Arts

We have had a very busy year in Performing Arts fu collaboration Year 7s have made excellent progress in music and drama and settled in very well They have ended the year making DIY instruments which you can see in the photos! A highlight in year 8 has been the amazing radio shows and podcasts they have recorded in the final term Year 9s have used all of the skills gained from year 7 and 8 and composed excellent music as well as recording film trailers in their drama lessons.

We had an amazing Christmas Concert which we performed to Primary schools in the afternoon and parents in the evening. February saw an amazing Talent Show with Ellie and Charlie as our winners! Our final concert celebrated Lord Grey turning 50 and took place in the penultimate week of the academic year.

In December we took 75 students to watch the London Sinfonia Orchestra play well known pieces at the Royal Festival Hall. In March we took 30 dancers to the MOVE IT dance exhibition in London where students watched amazing performances and had the opportunity to speak to dance colleges about possible career opportunities and further education. Our year 11 drama students saw Blood Brothers at Castle Theatre, Wellingborough and our year 11 film students went to the British Film Institute in London where they experienced lecture style workshops from industry professionals.

It has been an exciting year over in English! Every day in every classroom, students have been reading, discussing and analysing a range of engaging texts From Sherlock Holmes in Year 7, to Blood Brothers in Year 9 and all the way up to Othello in Year 13, there has been something for everyone to enjoy!

In addition to all of this, in January Year 9 were incredibly lucky to have a visit from the author Alex Wheatle. The students demonstrated excellent integrity and curiosity as they engaged with Alex’s talk which took them through his many challenges in life and how they have shaped him as a person and as a successful writer Alex shared his life-experiences with the year group as they listened intently and demonstrated curiosity as they engaged in a question and answer session at the end of his talk. Students found the session incredibly inspiring and brilliant feedback was received - ‘We learnt not to give up - whatever your circumstances’

In the past few weeks our Year 10 Students have made us incredibly proud by completing their GCSE Speaking and Listening assessments. Students showed clear ambition when presenting their speeches to their teachers and peers. We look forward to sending these off to the exam board to show Lord Grey Can!

PowerofPoetrycompetition- 75 publishedpoets

But English isn’t just about what happens in lessons - we have also had some wonderful extra-curricular activities taking place this year Through the Autumn term, Suzannah and Blessing in Year 12 and Sahar and Nardos in Year 11 took part in the Milton Keynes School Debate competition This meant they had to deliver an argument about a topic, respond to the opinions of others and persuade peers and adults to agree with their point of view The girls represented the school so well, showing real collaboration and determination This culminated in a wonderful trip to the Houses of Parliament on December 16th. And a special thanks has to be given to Ms Cantle and Ms Capel who accompanied the students to the very exciting event

Recently the Sixth Form have had some big events to celebrate!

On June 15th we had an exciting talk from DHL on employment and talent spotting opportunities There was also a workshop section where 30 students created an “elevator pitch” and a “network map” to understand the contemporary business environment

On 20th June all of Year 12 visited the UCAS fair at the University of Bedfordshire, this event hosted 11,000 students over two days, where students can connect with over 150 Universities. There was even an opportunity for students to experience a lecture and a seminar for themselves! Students returned from the event inspired and ready to start their University Journey.

Lord Grey Students spoke with our current sixth formers about their future after having left Lord Grey and all the opportunities they had been able k for themselves Our Alumni did us very

Most significantly, we finished two busy summer weeks with two Sixth Form Induction Days! We saw over 120 different students both internally and externally who were excited to get a taste of what their next two years at Lord Grey could look like We were able to give a taster of our full curriculum, but also to show the priority our Sixth Form will place on personal enrichment

Thank you to all involved in making these sixth form activities such a resounding success!

This focus on enrichment will be one of our top priorities going forward Sixth Form is an opportunity to give students a new, adult perspective on learning where they come to more fully understand it as a useful tool for their lives To this effect, we are looking to introduce more character education and personal development in our education of Sixth Form students. Not only is this something more valued by an increasing number of universities, but it’s important to Lord Grey as an academy that always puts our character values first
