CHECKPOINT #13 MARCH 2021 COLLECTED IN APRIL 2021*
Mostad Stated that the Breakers is seeing significant increases in bookings for April, May, and June. It appears that people are ready to travel again once they feel it is safe. With an increase in bookings and more money flowing might we be able to shore up agency reserves? Mayers Agreed and stated PGA National is also seeing this increase in demand. Jergensen Reported, there is still stimulus money to be rolled out to agencies and that maybe we could hold some of this for reserves. Glenn will put together a couple of plans for the next meeting to review. Mayers Expressed concerns about staffing levels in the industry and wondering if there may be a way to use some marketing money to promote jobs which need filling so that when people return the staff are in place to make the experience a good one. Jergensen Agreed to work with Career Source and ask them to report at our next meeting. G.

HIGHLIGHTS MOSAIC
Promotion of the Cultural Council’s annual MOSAIC (Month of Shows, Art, Ideas & Culture) continued into May with 17 special offers from cultural venues across Palm Beach County featured throughout the month. Marketing efforts generated 61,285 visits to the Cultural Council’s website in May, nearly 80% over May 2019.
The Council continued its social media influencer tactic, sharing content from April visits and hosting one additional influencer in May. Participating organizations also amplified the campaign by posting photos of the MOSAIC “selfie spots” throughout the month. Redemptions and other data and feedback are currently being collected to report next month. Promotion of the Shades of Culture at Sanborn Square in Boca Raton continued in May, including a photo shoot on May 4 with Boca Ballet Theater promoted on social media. The Council also promoted the smaller “shades” display at the Palm Beach Marriott Singer Island Resort & Spa. On May 8, the Council was on-site at Rosemary Square to promote MOSAIC at the panel discussion, “Art Shaping Communities.” Artist Bruce Helander was available to sign posters. And on May 17, the Council’s Cultural Concierge produced two live “pop up” performances featuring Latin Jazz guitarist Islay Rodriguez and dancers from the Ballet Arts Dance Company at Boynton Beach Town Square and Riviera Beach Marina Village Event Center Pavilion. Along with posting photos and video to social media, the Council worked closely with its PR agency to generate media interest, and secured coverage by The Palm Beach Post and Florida Weekly.

NCAA DII Men’s Golf National Championship
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) partnered with the Palm Beach County Sports Commission to host the NCAA Division II Men’s Golf National Championship from May 17-21 at PGA National Resort & Spa’s Champion Course. This event was the first NCAA Men’s Golf National Championship to take place in The Palm Beaches. 16 collegiate golf teams and four studentathletes competing as individuals, 84 players in total, were selected to participate in the competition. The NCAA Division II Men’s Golf National Championship teed off on the Champion Course, which is unquestionably one of the best and most challenging golf courses in the United States. The Champion Course features the famed Bear Trap, a demanding three-hole stretched designed by Jack Nicklaus.
Palm Beach Atlantic University (PBAU) also partnered with the Palm Beach County Sports Commission to oversee the event. PBAU provided irreplaceable support by offering an abundance of volunteers, which were required to manage an event of this caliber. PBAU is a member of the Sunshine State Conference, a Division II affiliate of the NCAA. The top four teams from each of the four NCAA Division II Men's Golf Super Regionals earned a bid to compete in the tournament. Additionally, the top four individuals not with a team from each super regional advanced to participate in the event. The NCAA Division II Men’s Golf National Championship consisted of both team and individual competitions conducted concurrently. After 54 holes of competition, the individual championship concluded, and the top eight teams advanced to match play. The final eight teams were seeded based on team scores, and competed in quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals to determine a champion. The National Championship provided a significant economic and tourism impact to Palm Beach County. Students, alumni, and golf fans visited The Palm Beaches and enjoyed the crowning of a national champion. The event created a significant level of visitor spending while filling hotel rooms across the county. The tournament is one of many that the Palm Beach County Sports Commission has won a bid to host in recent years. Palm Beach County was home to the NCAA Division II Women’s Golf National Championship in 2019 and won the rights to host the 2020 Division III Men’s and Women’s Golf Championship before pandemic-related shutdowns forced the tournament’s cancelation. In future years, The Palm Beaches will be home to the 2022 Division I Men’s Golf Regional, 2025 NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championships, and the 2026 NCAA Division II Women’s Golf Championships.
Conference Recap The Palm Beach County Sports Commission took part in the 2021 Sports Biz Xchange II which is a week-long schedule of virtual business appointments and industry networking opportunities for Sports ETA members and sports events rights holders from May 18-20, 2021. Palm Beach County to Host Olympic Qualifier for Baseball Press conference links: Photos Video WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- The Palm Beach County Sports Commission and Play Treasure Coast Sports Tourism announced plans to host a WBSC Baseball Americas Qualification Event for the Games of the XXXII Olympiad Tokyo 2020 in Palm Beach County from May 31-June 5. The schedule for the qualifier was announced at a press conference at Ballpark of the Palm Beaches on Thursday, April 29. See the full schedule below. The event will be hosted at two venues – the Ballpark of the Palm Beaches in West Palm Beach and Clover Park in Port Saint Lucie. The winning nation will earn a spot in the Summer Olympics which will begin this July in Tokyo, Japan. Eight nations will compete over 16 games for one spot in the six-team Tokyo 2020 Olympic baseball tournament. The nations will be placed into two groups for the opening round. Group A will feature the United States, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and Nicaragua while Group B will include Cuba, Venezuela, Canada, and Colombia. The first round is slated to begin May 31 and end June 3. After group play concludes, the top two finishers from each group will advance to the Super Round on June 5, where they will each play two games. Head-to-head contests among these teams from the opening round will carry over into the Super Round standings.
When the Super Round ends June 6, the team with the best record will be declared the winner and become the fifth National Team to advance to the Tokyo Olympic baseball tournament, joining Japan, Korea, Mexico, and Israel. The second and thirdplace teams will qualify for the WBSC Baseball Final Qualifier, scheduled from June 16-20 in Taiwan at Taichung Intercontinental Baseball Stadium and Douliou Baseball Stadium in Douliu City.
"The teams and the entire baseball world are all looking forward to this exciting moment to arrive on the road to the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020,” said WBSC President Riccardo Fraccari. “Now with the dates and venues locked in place, anticipation builds even higher for this important qualifier, which we hope will provide an excellent preview of the Tokyo 2020 Games and what they represent, as a symbol of hope and inspiration.” The Palm Beach County Sports Commission expects the tournament to make a strong economic impact in Palm Beach County. With eight teams, personnel, and fans, the event brings an added boost to already surging tourism trends. Due in large part to sports events returning to Palm Beach County, hotel occupancy in The Palm Beaches has reached 80% for the first time since pandemic-related restrictions began in March of last year. “The road to the Olympic Games now runs through Palm Beach County,” said George Linley, executive director of the Palm Beach County Sports Commission. “The Palm Beach County Sports Commission could not be more honored to add a historic event like the WBSC Baseball Americas Qualification Event to the storied history that is baseball in Palm Beach County.”
The Ballpark of the Palm Beaches might be Palm Beach County’s newest professional baseball facility but it is no stranger to hosting world-class baseball. Two recent World Series champions, the Houston Astros (2017) and Washington Nationals (2019), call the ballpark home each year for their Major League Baseball Spring Training games. Many elite baseball events have also played at the park including the Prospect Select Wave Invitational, Baseball Canada Junior Nationals, Palm Beach Classic, and Perfect Game USA 14U Florida Showcase. The ballpark contains a total of 13 MLB fields and five multipurpose athletic fields which are covered in beautiful Bermuda grass and cater to soccer, lacrosse, football, rugby, and more. Among the eclectic events that the venue has hosted are Battlepark Mixed Martial Arts, SoFlo Turkey Shootout in lacrosse, The Palm Beach Cup in soccer, and Sunshine Games Ultimate Frisbee.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Palm Beach County is Home to Florida's First Walker Cup JUNO BEACH, Fla. -- A storied golf rivalry will add another chapter to its 99-year history when 20 of the world’s best amateur golfers tee off in the 48th Walker Cup Match at Seminole Golf Club in Juno Beach, Florida on May 7-8. Palm Beach County’s winning bid to host the event marks the first time that the United States and Great Britain & Ireland teams will compete for the biennial trophy in Florida. The Walker Cup is a trophy contested in odd-numbered years alternately held in the U.S. and Ireland or Britain. The matches, organized by The R&A and the United States Golf Association (USGA), have been played since 1922 and are named after the then-president of the USGA George Herbert Walker. Heading into the 2021 event, the U.S. leads the all-time series 37-9-1. While the Americans have dominated the all-time series, the sides have been more evenly matched as all three events from 2003 to 2007 were all decided by a single point. In 2019, the USA secured eight of the final 10 singles matches in a comeback effort to defeat GB&I at Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake, England. It was the first win on foreign soil for the U.S. since 2007. The Walker Cup is often one of the last amateur events for many of golf’s top prospects before turning professional. Major champions Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Rory McIlroy, and Padraig Harrington, among many others, have represented their respective countries as amateurs.
This year’s teams include 10 of the top 20 ranked amateur golfers in the world, according to the World Amateur Golf Ranking. The highest-ranked player for the U.S. is world number two Pierceson Coody, a standout golfer for the University of Texas at Austin. Coody is a two-time All-American with the Longhorns and is the reigning Western Amateur champion. GB&I will be led by England’s Alex Fitzpatrick, the team’s only returning player from 2019 and the current world number 12 golfer. With Covid-19 safety protocols in place, the USGA is planning for 50% capacity, with approximately 2,500 spectators in attendance. Despite restrictions, the event is projected to create an estimated $730,000 in economic impact for Palm Beach County. The matches will also put The Palm Beaches in front of millions of viewers with live, uninterrupted coverage in the U.S. from the Golf Channel. Additionally, the Walker Cup will be distributed internationally via BBC and Sky Sports.
The host venue for the tournament will be Juno Beach’s Seminole Golf Club. Designed in 1929 by famed course architect Donald Ross, Seminole is consistently ranked as one of the top 100 courses in the United States. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Seminole had never hosted a live televised event. The TaylorMade Driving Relief Skins Match, featuring Rickie Fowler, Matthew Wolff, Johnson, and McIlroy, was played in May 2020 and marked the first time the club had opened its doors to the public. With the addition of this legendary event, Palm Beach County has now been home to premier events at all levels of golf including the PGA Tour’s The Honda Classic, Gainbridge LPGA at Boca Rio, PGA Tour Champion’s TimberTech Championship, various NCAA regional and championship events, and more. “The Palm Beach County Sports Commission could not be more excited to watch the stars of tomorrow play in The Palm Beaches at a world-class course like Seminole Golf Club,” said PBCSC executive director, George Linley. Play begins Saturday at 10 a.m. with foursome matches. For a full broadcast schedule, visit the official 2021 Walker Cup site.

13th Annual Palm Beach Cup Returns to Palm Beach Gardens With Over 150 Soccer Teams PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. -- Palm Beach Soccer Academy’s Palm Beach Cup, one of the largest soccer tournaments in Florida, returned to The Palm Beaches from May 7-9 for the first time since 2019. The annual event featured both boys’ and girls’ soccer teams competing at five different venues in Palm Beach Gardens: Gardens North County District Park, Joseph R. Russo Athletic Complex, PGA National Park, Mirasol Park, and Lilac Park. Over 160 teams and 2,500 athletes from across Florida and beyond traveled to The Palm Beaches to compete. The participating teams contended for titles in both boys’ and girls’ divisions competing in age groups ranging from Under-9 to Under-19. The Palm Beach County Sports Commission has enjoyed a longstanding partnership with the Palm Beach Soccer Academy. After years of consistent growth, the Palm Beach Cup has transformed into one of the largest soccer tournaments on the Florida Youth Soccer Association calendar. The tournament projected that over the course of the weekend that over 2,000 spectators attended the event. The competition was highlighted by two longstanding awards, the Dan Borislow Award and Mary Jo McCool Award, which were presented to the most outstanding male and female player who showed the most consistent work ethic during the Palm Beach
Cup. Goalkeepers swept the awards with Yener Bartolon of Palm Beach Soccer Academy’s U-19 team and Ana Gutierrez of the Lake Worth Shark’s U-14 team taking home their respective honors. Hosting an event of this magnitude is made possible by the vast inventory of fields available in Palm Beach County. One of The Palm Beaches’ newest facilities, Gardens North County District Park, contains 10 lighted multipurpose fields which were designed with FIFA regulations in mind. The adjacent Joseph R. Russo Athletic Complex also supplies two state-of-the-art multipurpose fields. PGA National, Lilac, and Mirasol Park each provide multipurpose fields perfect for high-level soccer such as the Palm Beach Cup. “We are excited that as more sports return to Palm Beach County that one of the Palm Beach County Sports Commission’s oldest partners is able to bring elite soccer competition back to our world-class venues,” said George Linley, Executive Director of the Palm Beach County Sports Commission.

The Champion Course features the famed Bear Trap, a demanding three-hole stretched designed by Jack Nicklaus.
Palm Beach Atlantic University (PBAU) is also partnering with the Palm Beach County Sports Commission to oversee the event. PBAU will provide irreplaceable support by offering an abundance of volunteers, which are required to manage an event of this caliber. PBAU is a member of the Sunshine State Conference, a Division II affiliate of the NCAA. The top four teams from each of the four NCAA Division II Men's Golf Super Regionals earn a bid to compete in the tournament. Additionally, the top four individuals not with a team from each super regional will advance to participate in the event. The NCAA Division II Men’s Golf National Championship will consist of both team and individual competitions conducted concurrently. After 54 holes of competition, the individual championship will conclude, and the top eight teams will advance to match play. The final eight teams will be seeded based on team scores, and compete in quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals to determine a champion. The National Championship will provide a significant economic and tourism impact to Palm Beach County. Students, alumni, and golf fans are expected to visit The Palm Beaches and enjoy the crowning of a national champion. The event will create a significant level of visitor spending while filling hotel rooms across the county. “The Palm Beach County Sports Commission is thrilled to partner with Palm Beach Atlantic University in hosting the NCAA Division II Men’s Golf National Championship, which illustrates Palm Beach County as Florida’s Golf Capital,” said George Linley, Executive Director of Palm Beach County Sports Commission. “Very few communities have the privilege of hosting a collegiate national championship and we are honored to be hosting this event. This NCAA championship will attract invaluable exposure and generate an enormous positive impact to Palm Beach County’s hospitality industry.”

FOCUS ON FILM FLASHBACK FEATURE: BAD BOYS II Bad boys, bad boys, whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do when [you need to blow up an oceanfront estate]? You come to The Palm Beaches! That’s exactly what director Michael Bay did for the 2003 action film Bad Boys II starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. The Hollywood-style action scene was shot in Delray Beach at the 38,000 square foot Mediterranean mansion once owned by Coca-Cola estate heir Michael Bird. The explosion and the movie were both a huge success but before the scene was shot, approvals were required across a number of government agencies to ensure safety, all facilitated by the PBC Film & Television Commission’s one-stop permitting process. See more at wikipedia.org/wiki/Bad_Boys_II.
LOCATION SPOTLIGHT THE WATERWAYS OF JUPITER You don’t have to wander far in Jupiter to run into water. Besides the ocean, the Intracoastal Waterway, the Loxahatchee River and the Jupiter Inlet all connect with many creeks and forks that allow boaters and paddlers to The Loxahatchee River take in the scene or create one on the water. Whether you need a cypress forest, a place to watch birds, or a fantastic sunrise or sunset spot, there is a lot waiting to be explored along Jupiter’s Waterway Trail. Most of us think of a beach when we envision a waterfront scene for film or television, yet filming on the beach isn’t without its problems. Wind noise is one situation that can ruin a production shoot day quickly. The Lagoon at DuBois Park The lagoon at DuBois Park provides a sheltered waterfront area that helps eliminate wind noise for a walk-and-talk on the beach scene, and doubles as a river on the south side of the lagoon. Scouting by boat is great way to take in several waterfront options and quickly eliminate the ones that don’t work for your production. No boat? No problem! Film-friendly Jupiter Outdoor Center has boats and The Lagoon at DuBois Park kayaks for hire along with a ton of local knowledge about tides and even the best time of day to capture crystal clear turquoise water. To find out more about filming in Jupiter, visit pbfilm.com/locations.

Production Activity Report For April 2021 Variance Explanations Percentage change variances of ± 10% in performance statistics are typically explained in this section. However, due to the Coronavirus’ impact on Palm Beach County’s production industry beginning in March 2020, year-over-year percentage changes in each category show major increases due primarily to the stability the industry has reached in recovering business lost amidst global lockdowns during the pandemic. For a more detailed historical context of COVID-19’s impact timeline for Palm Beach County and the state of Florida as compared to the U.S. at large, please refer to the March – December 2020 Production Activity Reports. Percentage change variances of ± 10% are as follows for the April 2021 year-to-date production statistics: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
Production Revenue: 20% increase Hotel Room Nights: 21% increase Production Days: 32% increase Total Productions: 53% increase Total Leads: 51% increase Lead Responses: 51% increase Lead Conversions: 79% increase
In comparison to pre-pandemic numbers from 2019, cumulative totals for Production Days, Permits, NonPermitted Productions, Leads and Lead Conversions for January–April 2021 have surpassed that of January– April 2019, showing that the Palm Beach County production industry is adjusting and recovering from the hardships and obstacles presented by the pandemic in 2020. Notable productions that have contributed to the economic recovery evidenced in the data collected for April 2021 include photoshoots for major brands such as Nike, Coco Gauff Casablanca and Vida de Louie along with commercials for Hasbro/Nerf, TV series like HBO Real Sports with Bryant Gumble, and various true crime reality docuseries. Additionally, the Tourism Branded Content Sponsorship Program had several programs go back into production in March and continue filming in April 2021, including Art Adventures of The Palm Beaches, Birding Adventures of The Palm Beaches, Washington Spirit Soccer Team, Sunset Lounge and A Wild Connection. In the midst of the recovery process, the FTC staff actively generates and pursues leads for new business. While major production epicenters like California and New York were undergoing continuous shutdowns to slow the spread of COVID-19 in January and February 2021, Florida remained open for business. The FTC cultivates those relationships with returning clients to keep Palm Beach County top of mind.

May 2021 Project Status Report Department of Environmental Resources Management Fisheries Monitoring: ERM, in partnership with the FWC Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI), Florida Atlantic University (FAU) and West Palm Beach Fishing Club (WPBFC), deployed 12 acoustic telemetry receivers in the northern portion of the Lake Worth Lagoon to track fish and sea turtle movement. The receivers collect data from tagged animals between the Lake Worth Inlet and MacArthur Beach State Park. FAU is leading an additional study focusing on the movement of juvenile mutton snapper in the same area. To help collect fish for tagging, the West Palm Beach Fishing Club hosted a tagging tournament this month. More than 40 anglers spent the morning fishing for mutton snapper to aid in the scientific study. A short video of the Mutton Snapper Challenge can be viewed at https://youtu.be/3Tr0fH90df8.

Oystercatcher Banding: Four pairs of American Oystercatchers have been observed nesting in the central Lake Worth Lagoon (LWL) restoration projects. The nests are located at Tarpon Cove, Grassy Flats, Snook Islands, and Bryant Park. Six chicks have hatched so far this year: 3 at Tarpon Cove, 2 at Grassy Flats, and 1 at Bryant Park. Sea Turtle Walk: During June, ERM staff will host guided sea turtle walks on the beach, where participants can observe a nesting loggerhead sea turtle. Staff from ERM will kick off the event with a short presentation and will also be on hand to answer any questions before, during and after the experience with one of these amazing animals. Space will be limited to 25 participants per event. These events are FREE, but registration is required at pbcerm.eventbrite.com.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) began banding oystercatcher chicks in LWL in 2019 to determine their movement patterns. The very first birds tagged in the LWL at Snook Islands in 2019 ended up being sighted the following year on beaches in Fort Myers on the west coast of Florida. ERM staff are interested to see where this year’s newly banded chicks go once they leave the nesting grounds.

Manatee Release: Three manatees were released this month at Anchorage Park in North Palm Beach. The release was coordinated by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), but numerous agencies and organizations participated, including ERM. The first manatee, known as “Chessie”, was rescued in February and sent to SeaWorld Orlando for rehabilitation… for the second time! Chessie was first rescued in 1994 from the Chesapeake Bay and rehabilitated at SeaWorld Orlando before being released in Virginia. The other two manatees, a mother-calf pair named “Froggy” and “Toad”, were rescued in February from Dania Beach. The mother was having buoyancy problems and was found with a dependent calf, so both were sent to Miami Seaquarium for rehab. Please report any sick, injured, dead or tagged manatees to FWC’s Wildlife Alert Hotline at 1-888-404-3922.
MANATEE RELEASE
Wading Birds: ERM is happy to report over 150 Egretta (medium-sized herons) have nested in County managed natural areas this season. The majority of the nests belonged to little blue herons (Egretta caerulea), which are a state threatened species. Staff are ecstatic to see these imperiled wading birds thriving on our conservation lands. Running Wild: Join ERM staff this summer for monthly guided trail runs that will take participants through various natural areas. The runs are free and open to the public and will take participants through a variety of habitats on a combination of hardened and primitive trails. You can find more information and register at pbcerm.eventbrite.com.
RUNNING WILD
Adventure Awaits: ERM staff will be kicking off the summer 2021 session of Adventure Awaits with events including Wildflower Walks, Photography Workshops, Swamp Tromps, and Morning Paddles hosted throughout Palm Beach County’s Natural Areas. All events are free and open to the public.
Adventure Awaits: Register NOW for a FREE event at PBCERM.EVENTBRITE.COM!
