The United States Earns Olympic Berth After Baseball Americas Qualifier in The Palm Beaches WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- The Palm Beach County Sports Commission hosted the WBSC Baseball Americas Qualifier for the XXXII Olympiad Tokyo 2020 from May 31-June 5 at the Ballpark of the Palm Beaches. The United States advanced to the Olympics after an undefeated five-game campaign. Eight nations competed over 16 games for the second-to-last spot in the six-team tournament. The U.S., Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Nicaragua, Cuba, Venezuela, Canada, and Colombia participated in the event which took place at two venues – the Ballpark of the Palm Beaches in West Palm Beach and Clover Park in Port Saint Lucie. Throughout the competition, fans were treated to elite-level baseball featuring a mix of up-and-coming players and veteran major leaguers. Familiar names like Jose Bautista, Todd Frazier, Melky Cabrera, and Anibal Sanchez played alongside rising prospects in the minor leagues like Matthew Liberatore and Julio Rodriguez, the no. 30 and no. 5 prospects in baseball respectively, per MLB.com.
Household names were aplenty at the Ballpark of the Palm Beaches with the Palm Beach County Sports Commission honoring multiple MLB greats and hall of famers with ceremonial first pitches. Legends like Ivan ‘Pudge’ Rodriguez, David ‘Big Papi’ Ortiz, Andre Dawson, Larry Walker, Jeff Conine, Johnny Bench, Tony Armas, Liván Hernández, Dennis Martínez, and Bucky Dent made appearances throughout the week. Despite Covid-19 safety restrictions to limit capacity, the two venues generated impressive attendance figures with over 25,000 fans attending at least one game throughout the week. For those not in attendance, the game was broadcast in over 70 countries and territories while over 2,000,000 fans engaged with the tournament through social media. The local and international media provided plenty of coverage, especially across North, South, and Central America with close to 200 accredited media members for the tournament - attending personally or virtually - taking advantage of the post-game press conferences which were provided in both English and Spanish.
The tournament also made a different kind of impact with on-site coronavirus vaccinations available each day. Thanks to the Health Care District of Palm Beach County, vaccines were available for free to all attendees. The Health Care District also vaccinated the players and staff of each team in need prior to the tournament beginning. The Palm Beach County Sports Commission expected the tournament to make a strong economic impact in Palm Beach County. With eight teams, personnel, and fans, the event brought an added boost to already surging tourism trends.
“The United States will play in this summer’s Olympics, and it all started right here in The Palm Beaches,” said George Linley, Executive Director of the Palm Beach County Sports Commission. “The Palm Beach County Sports Commission could not have been more honored to host the WBSC Baseball Americas Qualifier for the XXXII Olympiad Tokyo 2020.”
The Ballpark of the Palm Beaches might be Palm Beach County’s newest professional baseball facility, but it is no stranger to hosting world-class baseball. Two recent World Series champions, the Houston Astros (2017) and Washington Nationals (2019) call the ballpark home each year for their Major League Baseball Spring Training games. Many elite baseball events have also played at the park including the Prospect Select Wave Invitational, Baseball Canada Junior Nationals, Palm Beach Classic, and Perfect Game USA 14U Florida Showcase. The ballpark contains a total of 13 MLB fields and five multipurpose athletic fields which are covered in beautiful Bermuda grass and cater to soccer, lacrosse, football, rugby, and more. Among the eclectic events that the venue has hosted are Battlepark Mixed Martial Arts, SoFlo Turkey Shootout in lacrosse, The Palm Beach Cup in soccer, and Sunshine Games Ultimate Frisbee.

The Palm Beach County Sports Commission’s summer campaign of sports events signifies a revival of sports tourism in a post Covid-19 era. After hosting the Baseball Americas Qualifier for the XXXII Olympiad from May 31st – June 5th, Sports Commission events experienced a full recovery in terms of reach and potency. Multi-team events have returned on a national and global level with participation rates that are similar to pre Covid-19 levels. Although the revival of sports tourism has occurred this summer, our Sports Commission is still proceeding with caution and implementing plans and strategies to navigate potential fluctuations with the virus’ spread. The height of Palm Beach County’s off-season traditionally occurs during the late spring and summer months (May – September). During this timeframe, the Palm Beach County Sports Commission (PBCSC) has developed a portfolio of 69 state, regional, national, and international sporting events. A total of 54 events took place from May through July and another 15 events are scheduled in August and September. Many of the events taking place during this summer require a noteworthy commitment of resources, due to committed event partnerships, event production requirements, operational and logistical support, on-site staff assistance, and marketing support. These events not only represent a rebound from the pandemic and significant bed tax revenues and economic impact for our destination; but have created great memories for thousands of visitors. The 2021 collection of summer events has also solidified Palm Beach County’s position as a leading sports destination in Florida. A total of 29 out of the 69 summer sports events (41%) are new to The Palm Beaches. Our Sports Commission’s overall portfolio of sporting events is on pace with the room night generation created during the summer of 2019 (pre Covid-19). Successful bids and relocations, such as the Baseball

Sports-Development Sports Development Executive Summary In FY 21, the Palm Beach County Sports Commission (PBCSC) is deploying an aggressive sales and sports development effort to grow the number of sports tourisms generating events taking place in The Palm Beaches. The PBCSC continues to cultivate relationships with event owners, as well as identify, solicit, secure and retain sports events to grow room night actualization. Below is a recap of sports development efforts that have taken place during the month of July in FY 21.
Event Bids & Development A primary mechanism for event solicitation is through the Event Bid and Development process. To recognize potential bid opportunities, the PBCSC will be at the forefront of the industry and engage with event owners. Bid submission is a highly effective tool to recruit sporting events. Attached is a comprehensive list of the bids that have been submitted in FY 21, and below is a breakdown of the development efforts over the past month: •

HOLEY MOLEY BARBARA! Make no bones about it! Barbara Cytrynowicz, a Tennis Center Supervisor for Boca Raton, made a big splash on ABC’s Holey Moley. On the popular reality series, contestants put Barbara Cytrynowicz their miniature golf and physical skills to the test as they face off on a supersized obstacle course. In a recent episode called Pretty Tee-rrific, Barbara stared down the tar pits on the dreaded Putt-A-Saurus. The course lived up to its reputation as Barbara took a nasty bounce off the last rib and landed in the muck. “She could have just stepped down,” said color commentor Rob Riggle. “She would’ve been muddy only from the waist down. But she gave us some really good footage!” Although Barbara didn’t win, she left her mark…in more ways than one! Watch the episode at abc.com/shows/holey-moley.

In between a summer schedule of relaxation and fun in the sun, students from The King’s Academy in West Palm Beach are honing their creative skills on set of an independent feature film, The Fountain of Youth. The story follows a high school history teacher who inherits a clue to the mythical fountain of youth, and finds himself adventuring across Florida to discover it and save his ailing mother's life. Director of Digital Media Arts Austin Parenti shared, “My inspiration was two-fold: first, I wish to continue developing a premiere film educational experience at The King's Academy. There is no better way to learn than by doing. The amount my students have learned in these thirty-five days of production is, as you can imagine, truly unquantifiable. Students On Set Second, I wish to see Palm Beach County become a creative film hub in the United States. Our County has so much to offer from beaches, jungles, and cities. I wanted to make a film that would prove that this is a dynamic place to set nearly any story.” Filming has taken place throughout downtown West Palm Beach, Riverbend Park, Frenchman’s Forest Natural Area and more. Once completed, they plan to premiere the film at a local theater and release it digitally to the public via The King’s Academy’s YouTube Channel. See more at tka.net.

Production Activity Report For June 2021 Variance Explanations Percentage change variances of ± 10% in performance statistics are typically explained in this section. However, due to the Coronavirus’ impact on Palm Beach County’s production industry beginning in March 2020, year-over-year percentage changes in each category show major increases due primarily to the stability the industry has reached in recovering business lost amidst global lockdowns during the pandemic. For a more detailed historical context of COVID-19’s impact timeline for Palm Beach County and the state of Florida as compared to the U.S. at large, please refer to the March – December 2020 Production Activity Reports. Percentage change variances of ± 10% are as follows for the June 2021 year-to-date production statistics: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
Production Revenue: 28% increase Hotel Room Nights: 38% increase Production Days: 40% increase Total Productions: 79% increase Total Leads: 47% increase Lead Responses: 45% increase Lead Conversions: 89% increase
In comparison to pre-pandemic numbers from 2019, cumulative totals for Production Days, Permits, NonPermitted Productions, Leads and Lead Conversions for January–June 2021 have surpassed that of January– June 2019, showing that the Palm Beach County production industry is adjusting and recovering from the hardships and obstacles presented by the pandemic in 2020. In fact, a record number of permits have been issued in the first six month of the calendar year (212 vs. previous record of 197 in 2017). Notable productions that have contributed to the economic recovery evidenced in the data collected this month include television series like VH1’s Love & Hip Hop, photoshoots for major brands like DKNY, a music video for Zac Brown Band’s new single Same Boat and major broadcast sporting events like the America’s Olympic Baseball Qualifier. Additionally, the Tourism Branded Content Sponsorship Program has continued on-location production and post-production on several series including On The Town in The Palm Beaches, Birding Adventures of The Palm Beaches and Passport To The Palm Beaches. In the midst of the recovery process, the FTC staff actively generates and pursues leads for new business. While major production epicenters like California and New York were undergoing continuous shutdowns to slow the spread of COVID-19 in January and February 2021, Florida remained open for business. The FTC cultivates those relationships with returning clients to keep Palm Beach County top of mind.

July 2021 Project Status Report Department of Environmental Resources Management Tarpon Cove: The acquisition of beneficially reused sand generated from the Town of Palm Beach Marina dredging project continues. In the last year, Tarpon Cove has received 80,000 cubic yards of sand with an estimated 12,000 remaining. The next phase is anticipated to provide enough material to construct two new mangrove islands in the northern area of the project. The County has solicited competitive bids for a marine contractor to finish placing rock around the existing islands, and this work is anticipated to begin in mid-August with completion of the two northern mangrove islands by March 2022. PAST REEF DART DEPLOYMENT
Reef Darts: ERM is working with the West Palm Beach Fishing Club to deploy a set of reef darts four miles offshore of the Lake Worth Inlet. Reef darts are made from repurposed concrete utility poles and culverts that are retrofitted with a heavy base to fall in an upright position on the seafloor. Once deployed, reef darts create a forest of vertical structures in what would otherwise resemble an underwater desert of open sandy bottom. This will be the fifth reef dart deployment offshore of Palm Beach County and is expected to provide habitat for both small organisms and large predators alike.
Nesting Shorebirds of the LWL: One of the most visible successes of ERM’s Lake Worth Lagoon (LWL) restoration projects has been the use of these sites by nesting shorebirds. Shorebirds require suitable foraging habitat and nesting grounds and the projects, including Snook Islands, Bryant Park, Grassy Flats, and Tarpon Cove, have provided both. To date this year, 4 nesting pairs of American Oystercatchers have hatched 4 surviving chicks. ERM staff, in partnership with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), have banded these chicks to determine their movement patterns. Additionally, at least 13 black skimmer chicks and 7 least tern chicks have been sighted.

Sea Turtles: Hatching season is officially upon us in Palm Beach County! Please be mindful during this time of year by keeping our beaches dark. You can help sea turtles find their way to the ocean by simply turning off any unnecessary lights, closing blinds on beachfront properties, and by refraining from walking on the beach at night. After dark, human presence on the beach can deter nesting females from laying their eggs, and flashlights or cell phones can disorient the hatchlings as they make the important journey from their nests to the water.
SOGGY SOCKS CAMPSITE CONSTRUCTION
Adventure Awaits: ERM staff led 20 kayakers on hour-long kayak tours of Snook Islands Natural Area in Lake Worth Beach. The 2.5 mile round trip tour included a talk by ERM staff about the creation of Snook Islands and the many years of successful wildlife utilization. There are more events scheduled for August. Some of these events may be full - but you can put your name on a wait list. For more information about upcoming events - and how to register - visit pbcerm.eventbrite.com.
Pântano Trail: Renovations to a 4.5 mile stretch of the Pântano Trail have recently been completed. The Pântano Trail runs from Riverbend Park to the Loxahatchee Slough and Hungryland Slough Natural Areas and to the Corbett Wildlife Management Area. The Pântano trail is one of the 4 long distance multi use trails that make up the Jeaga Wildways. The Jeaga Wildways trail system provides hikers, cyclists, and equestrians with access to over 160,000 acres of publically owned conservation lands. Eagle Scout Project: The Ocean to Lake Hiking Trail (OTLHT) runs for approximately 61.4 miles between Hobe Sound and Lake Okeechobee. Thanks to Eagle Scout candidate Robby Vargas of Troop 141, throughhikers will be able to enjoy new amenities at the Soggy Socks primitive campsite located along a portion of the trail that runs through the Loxahatchee Slough Natural Area. Robby recruited volunteers from his troop to build two benches, install two sets of hammock posts for hammock camping, and install a backpack post, which is also suitable for drying out soggy socks! For more information about the trail, visit https://loxfltrail.org/Ocean2LakeHikingTrail.html.
