SAVOIR VIVRE
interview with Aleksandra Pakuła, founder of the Etiquette Institute
Does respect for tradition and the fact that horse racing is considered an elite sport also have to do with etiquette and appropriate behavior?
Aleksandra Pakuła: In the past, horse racing events were attended by representatives of the aristocracy, who instilled the rules of manners in their children. Horse races were considered to be an exceptional event, which was demonstrated not only by the dress or the rich attire, but also by impeccable behavior. It was one of the ways to be different from the lower classes. As a result of nurturing this tradition, horse racing as one of very few events, is still considered an event that requires adherence to rules of behavior and dress. In a world of constant rush, horse racing is one of a few occasions to stop and go back to tradition and appreciate elegance.
Does the outfit as a whole matter? What is the appropriate attire for racing?
A.P.: At this event, the attire is especially important. According to dress code rules, participants should opt for formal daytime attire.
Based on your professional experience, please tell us why many people feel restricted by dress code and savoir- vivre rules? And what does it result from?
A.P.: Savoir-vivre limits us only when we do not know the rules and we let ourselves believe that they are difficult, artificial and reserved for a limited group of people. Savoir-vivre is, above all, the ability to show respect to others, and this is not difficult at all. Good manners require us to adapt our behavior to the circumstances so that others feel good in our company. In my experience, people who learn my philosophy of etiquette immediately appreciate its usefulness and the specific charm that comes from making your everyday life more elegant.
Does adherence to etiquette mean that when horses are competing on the green track, spectators cannot get carried away with their sporting emotions and cheer for their favorites?
A.P.: Etiquette never requires us to behave unnaturally or be artificially serious. Horse racing is a fascinating sport and every ardent fan has the right to show his emotions on that day. As long as we respect the rules of social conduct (do not violate the space of others, do not use abusive language), etiquette has nothing against passionately cheering for the favorites.
