POM VII Offers the Most Diverse Assortment of Films Yet

by Roubina Shnorhokian

Travel to the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland, followed by a scenic tour of Paris at the turn of the twentieth century in the special screenings of Brave and A Monster in Paris will open Hamazkayin s 7th annual Pomegranate Film Festival (POM VII), October 18-21. The two animated features have been selected as part of POM VII s special program where proceeds of ticket sales will be donated to the Syrian Armenian Relief Fund. Brave will be the opening film on Thursday, October 18, kicking off the amazing film program ahead. A Monster in Paris will be screened on Saturday, October 20, where both children and adults can enjoy a quirky dose of Saturday morning cartoons. These special times have been selected to encourage families to attend and support this worthy c a u s e . A s p a r t o f P O M s appreciation, a limited number of complementary treats will be given out at these films to the Festival s youngest attendees. Festival participants will also have the unique opportunity to participate in live Question & Answer sessions with Producer Katherine Sarafian (Brave) and Screenwriter Stéphane Kazandjian (A Monster in Paris). Both individuals are internationally acclaimed for their work in the film industry. Sarafian has established a highly successful career with Pixar, having previously worked on Monsters, Inc. and The Incredibles. Just like Merida, the heroine of Brave, Katherine is very proud of her heritage, as her father was the long-time pastor of St. Vartan's Armenian Church in Oakland, California.

A scene from Where Do We Go Now? by Lebanese director/actress Nadine Labaki . Set in a religiously mixed village, the movie is about a group of women trying to preserve their town in the midst of interreligious tension.

French filmmaker Stephane Kazandjian is a familiar face to POM, having won the Best Feature Film award at last year's Festival for his mockumentary, King of the World. His past features Modern Love and Sexy Boys (POM 09) exhibit Kazandjian s knack for witty dialogue and unbridled characters. In producing A Monster in Paris, he joined forces with Director Bibo Bergeron of A Shark Tale. Once again, the red carpets will be rolled out at the Regent Theatre (551 Mt. Pleasant Rd. south of Eglinton Ave.) on Friday night (October 19th) for the Lebanese comedic drama, Where Do We Go Now? Directed by Nadine Labaki of Caramel, this film will be of particular interest to all those who have spent

some time in the Middle East. Friday night's festivities continue with Hamshen Armenian director Ozcan Alper's critically acclaimed feature film, Future Lasts Forever, which highlights the 2012 Festival theme of examining the status of minorities in Turkey through a contemporary lens. This year s Gala film (October 20th) will be Tayfur Aydin s Trace, a profoundly touching story of an older woman who yearns to return to her birthplace. To fulfill this promise, her son and grandson embark on a challenging journey through Anatolia, which becomes burdened by several difficulties. They soon understand that there is more to this story than meets the eye, discovering the hidden secrets of

their family. The film s beautiful cinematography and poetic narrative boldly meditate on the legacy that many citizens of Turkey are discovering at an alarming rate. Also expect, as part of a spectacular evening, wonderful food, libations, and music. POM VII will also be presenting a record nine World Premieres including Memories Without Borders, a documentary that remarkably coordinated film crews in Armenia, Artsakh, Azerbaijan and Turkey. Additionally, the segment, Hrant Dink s Legacy, will showcase the documentary Habap Fountains, which covers the remarkable restoration project led by Fethiye Cetin, the prominent author and see page 4
