Pomegranate Film Festivalthe most eclectic yet
by Taline Sethian Just after Toronto s other film festival closes, the fourth annual Pomegranate Film Festival (PFF) will open and run from September 25-27, at the Armenian Youth Center. This year, PFF will show case a selection of over 20 films during the three day event, including several North American and world premieres. Now in its fourth year, the Festival continues to attract a growing number of submissions from talented writers, direc tors and producers from all over the world. Each year, the festival committee strives to broaden the scope of the presented films and this year s is the most eclectic selection yet. The committee has nar rowed down from numerous excellent submissions, to exhibit a programme that is diverse in theme, genre and content. Audiences can expect the unexpected with a rich blend of intrigue, romance, drama, comedy, historical documentaries, and even a sampling of psychological thriller. Love is in the air
On Friday September 25, come out with your sweetie or a group of your friends, because Modern Love is no or dinary love story. Director Stéphane Ka zandjian will be joining the festival from Paris to introduce this French romantic musical comedy that will have you tapping your toes and humming along. Some times whimsical, sometimes silly, but always fun, Modern Love explores the lives of several couples living their very own brand of romance, chock full of dis tinctive complications. We follow the jour neys of a single woman who has given up on love; two polar opposites with noth ing in common but their love for one another and the always exciting trials and tribulations of a man with his ex-love. evening of glamour where in addition to the festivities the extravagant evening will showcase the feature presentation of the gala film Bonded Parallel. Audiences will be transported to an other time and place with the North Amer ican premiere of Bonded Parallels by director, Hovhannes Galstyan. The story takes viewers on two simultaneous jour neys of forbidden love. Laura, a quiet math teacher in Yerevan, is stuck in a tedious existence until she receives doc uments about her father, Arakel, (a role played by festival fan favorite, Serge Avedikian) who died in exile. These doc uments reveal the story of her parents and the torrid love affair they were forced to hide from the world. As the story of her parents passion unfolds and the pieces of who she is fall into place - she begins to experience a parallel story of forbidden love in her own life with a student in her class. This year the PFF will offer specially priced Gala tickets for all participants of Run to Remember, in an attempt to en courage the initiative that will take place on September 27.

Detached, which will be making its Canadian premiere at PFF, depicts the suspenseful story of a successful young mortgage broker who is forced to face decisions he s made that have ruined countless lives, including his own. When a bizarre stream of anonymous holiday cards start turning up all over his life, the usually composed Chadh Campbell be comes consumed by paranoia, and ob sessed with uncovering the source of the mysterious greetings. As, one by one, he uncovers the potential motivation of a long list of suspects; Chadh must confront the reality of how many people he has hurt over the years and realizes how detached he has become from those in his life. As the clues continue to mount, Chadh becomes entrenches in the life he once led and faces the consequences of his past. Director Chris Bessounian spins a vivid portrayal of a consumed man falls victim to his own mistakes. Also in the lineup is Chris Bessou nian s award-winning short film The Kolaborator, which will be making its Canadian premiere at Pomegranate Film Festival. This film tells the gripping story
of a young soccer player named Goran, who is forced to become a solider during the conflict in former Yugoslavia. Goran s life goes from being a successful athlete to having to kill fellow citizens in the name of patriotism. He becomes increasingly devoid of humanity and comfortable in his new role, rationalizing his actions as a necessary means of protecting his peo ple. Goran is plunged back into reality when his soccer coach and life-long friend, Asim, is led in front of him. In an immobilizing moment Goran is forced to choose between his own life and that of his cherished friend. This celebrated film has received many accolades since its release including the Director s Choice Award at the Sedona International Film Festival. The Ghost, the second feature by Armenian-Russian director, Karen Ogane syan, is a well-crafted psychological thriller full of twists and turns that will leave you at the edge of your seat with you eyes glued to the screen.
