Nancy Kricorian Presents Latest Book, All The Light There Was, in Toronto by Karin Saghdejian What type of work and effort goes into constructing a novel set in a specific historical period? Armenian American novelist Nancy Kricorian spent over a decade researching her latest novel released this spring. Kricorian, who was visiting Toronto upon invitation from the local AGBU Chapter, took us with her on a journey into Belleville, a working class neighborhood of Paris under Nazi occupation. The result of her efforts is her latest novel, All The Light There Was, about an Armenian family struggling to survive the dark days of Paris. Her audience at AGBU Toronto s Alec Manoukian Centre included among community representatives and book lovers, director Atom Egoyan and his wife actress Arsinee Khanjian. Lara Sroujian presented the novelist as a writer and activist. New York City-based Kricorian is a Columbia University graduate and has taught at Rutgers and Yale. Her poetry has been widely published in literary journals and she has published two novels Zabelle, and Dreams of Bread and Fire. All the Light There Was was published by
Houghton Mifflin Harcourt this March. Kricorian s novels deal with the Armenians in diaspora as Genocide survivors, their identity crisis and resilience as they try to forge new lives in new environments. Kricorian said she conceived the novel after reading about a French Communist resistance network whose leader was a French Armenian poet Missak Manouchian. The novel grew out of questions like how did the Armenians in Paris, who were genocide survivors, live through the Nazi occupation? The question took her into a prolonged research, visits to Paris and especially to the neighbourhood of Belleville where her protagonist Maral Pegorian s family lives. She interviewed elderly Armenians who had lived through the occupation and others who were active with French resistance groups. And she found out their hidden stories, such as how blue eyed and blonde-haired historian Anahid Minassian was walked around by her father to the offices of the German officials to prove that Armenians were an Aryan people. Or how singer Charles Aznavour as a teenager had the task of dumping the uniforms
