Armenian community celebrates Independence Day in Markham with momentous announcements

The Armenian National Committee of Toronto (ANCT) hosted a flag ceremony at the Markham Civic Centre in celebration of the 106th anniversary of the Independence of the First Republic of Armenia. This annual event, which has become a cherished tradition, drew GTA Armenians and local government officials.

As the master of ceremonies, Sareen Kupelian provided a historical overview of the First Republic of Armenia and highlighted the contributions of the Armenian community in Canada. Kupelian is an active member of the Armenian Youth Federation (AYF Canada) Simon Zavarian chapter Armen Karo Student Union.

The ceremony featured the raising of the Armenian tricolour, accompanied by the stirring renditions of national anthems performed by the Homenetmen Toronto scouts and brass band.

During the event, Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti made a significant announcement, revealing that the City of Markham will host a statue of Sara Corning in the Forest of Hope. The unveiling is scheduled for Saturday, July 13, 2024, at 3 p.m. Sara Corning (1872–1969) was a heroic nurse certified by the American Red Cross in 1918 and joined Near East Relief in 1919 to aid civilians affected

by World War I. Corning is celebrated for her courageous efforts in rescuing and caring for thousands of Armenian and Greek orphans, often at great personal risk.

Adding to the day’s momentous announcements, Ronald Lynn, Chair of the York Region District School Board (YRDSB), declared May as Armenian Heritage Month. He also announced that the YRDSB will collaborate with the Ontario government to include the Armenian Genocide in the province-wide school curriculum.

Helena Jaczek, Member of Parliament for Markham—Stouffville, praised the Armenian community in her speech. She noted the establishment of the Canadian embassy in Yerevan last year, a step aimed at fostering closer diplomatic ties between Canada and Armenia.

The event concluded with a reception, allowing attendees to reflect on the day’s celebrations and announcements.

An afternoon with three Canadian-Armenian authors

The Hamazkayin H. Manougian Library was bustling on April 14, 2024. A space packed with seated and standing curious and avid readers, it was a celebratory day. The Hamazkayin Library Committee was honouring Dr. Alan Whitehorn, Dr. Lorne Shirinian and Dr. Keith Garebian, three widely published, revered and illustrious Canadian-Armenian authors. Each a descendant of survivors of the Armenian Genocide with incredible talent for the written word and a conviction to tell the stories of their common ancestry. The audience entered their literary worlds over the course of the afternoon, learning about the authors, their accomplishments, contributions and latest works.

prolific Canadian-Armenian author. Dr. Shirinian is the son of two orphaned children of the Armenian Genocide. And as many authors write of their experiences and perspectives, his works often are themed around the exploration of the search for one's identity as a diasporan and the burden of carrying such a heavy history. His works span a variety of genres including poetry, plays, novels, non-fiction and more.

Principal Raffi Sarkissian of the ARS Armenian Private School emceed the event, introducing the authors, presenters, and readers. He situated the event in the significance of the authors’ contributions to the study and remembrance of the Armenian Genocide and its transgenerational impacts. He expressed that the authors “have contributed a wealth of literary work that is the embodiment of the thoughts, feelings, struggles, triumphs and tribulations of the Armenians in the diaspora. Moreover, these three authors have contributed their works and their expertise in benefit of our collective pursuit for justice for past and present day injustices.”

Tamar Matig, Eugenie Parsekhian and Shaké Koftikian, three members of the Hamazkayin Library Committee and professionals in their respective fields, each had crafted a presentation to introduce one of the authors and share their thoughts and impressions on their recent publications.

Seven shining students from ARS Lapoyan High School–Nariné Artin (grade 9), Karina Sarkissian (grade 9), Alexia Telian (grade 10), Tamar Cherkezian (grade 9), Palig Asadour (grade 11), Araz Charshafian (grade 9) and Lori Agop (grade 9) – had prepared to read aloud select excerpts in poem and prose from the publications.

Tamar Matig approached the podium first and introduced Dr. Whitehorn, reviewing his biography and academic contributions throughout his career as Professor Emeritus in the Department of Political Science and Economics at the Royal Military College. She shared the story of how Dr. Whitehorn had unintentionally become a scholar of the Armenian Genocide: as Dr. Whitehorn had written in his article 'The Birth of a Genocide Scholar' in Armenian Weekly, he had researched issues from the Toronto Globe Newspaper from 1915 out of curiosity and learned how much Canadian society had been exposed to the Armenian Genocide. Then, one day, as a senior

official from the Turkish Embassy had written a letter to The Globe denying the Genocide, Dr. Whitehorn responded, using all the proof that he kept archived as a means to refute this claim. Matig then elaborated on the impact that his grandmother, Sirhoun, had on him as a survivor of the Genocide, reciting two of his poems to the audience, 'Medzmama' and 'Sirhoun’s lament'. She pointed out the transgenerational trauma evident in the poems, connecting it to what Armenians are collectively feeling today and that we all feel Sirhoun’s pain. She then presented Dr. Whitehorn’s poetry books, The Armenian Genocide: Resisting the Inertia of Indifference (written with Dr. Lorne Shirinian, 2001), Ancestral Voices: Identity, Ethnic Roots and a Genocide Remembered (2007), Just Poems: Reflections on the Armenian Genocide (2009), and elaborated on his two most recent and bilingual publications: Return to Armenia (Վերադարձ

2012 and Karabagh Diary: Poems of the Diaspora (Ղարաբաղեան

, 2022. She shared a personal story, explaining how she had accidentally come across Dr. Whitehorn’s book The Armenian Genocide: The Essential Reference Guide when she was still in college, and how finding his impressive piece of work had paved the way for her decision to study history in university, and sparked her interest in the topics of books on Armenian subjects. The book itself is an encyclopedia of the Armenian Genocide, and she strongly recommended the audience to pick up a copy as there were limited quantities available. Thanking Dr. Whitehorn for his impact on her path, she invited Nariné Artin and Karina Sarkissian to recite two of his poems: 'Last of the Armenians' («Վերջին

and 'Seeing Karabagh again?' («Նորից

Eugenie Parsekhian introduced the second author, Dr. Shirinian, a professor Emeritus of over 35 years of experience in teaching language and literature at the Royal Military Colleges in Montreal and Kingston. Dr. Shirinian is the founder and editor of Manna: a review of contemporary poetry and the author of 32 (and counting) books, making him the most

Parsekhian spoke of and read from several of Dr. Shirinian's most recent publications:

• Two poems were recited from Dr. Shirinian's fifth book of poetry, Rendering the Timeline. It is a collection of poems spanning over a decade.

• In Intimate Spaces, a longer form of fiction, the author explores the questions ‘How do we make sure that the Armenian Genocide is remembered?’; ‘What will we do with those memories?’; ‘How do we make sense of them and keep living with the pain that we’re tasked to carry?’

• In Arising, a book consisting of two novellas and a one-act play, Dr. Shirinian engages with change through his characters;

• In Remembering, a biographical, but partially fictionalized book, Dr. Shirinian not only recounts episodes from his life, but comes face to face with existential thoughts that creep into his writing.

• The title and main character of Dr. Shirinian's most recent novella, Minas Delirian, is named after the grandfather he never got to know. This book is an effort to keep his name alive, a sentiment many Armenians feel keenly.

To conclude, Parsekhian informed the audience of Dr. Shirinian's most recent work, Troubled, a murder story that involves two Armenians in the Don Valley near Pottery Road, where he grew up. The book is expected to come out this summer. She also asked the author about his preferred form of writing and how the form of literary expression changes how one writes.

Dr. Shirinian replied that although he is "...getting a great deal of pleasure in writing non-fiction these days, poetry remains [his] favourite". As many survivors of terrible atrocities cannot and refuse to speak of it, it is perhaps appropriate that poetry is the best avenue to learn of it, with few, but impactful words that shape one's imagination and emotions.

Shaké Koftikian introduced and welcomed the third author, Dr. Garebian, back to the Community Centre and Library. Dr. Garebian is a revered and widely-published author, poet, academic, and critic with numerous accolades and achievements, including having been awarded the prestigious William Saroyan Medal.

She was intrigued by the title and descriptor, wondering, at first glance, “about the curation and provenance of his narrative.” Dr. Garebian, being the son of an Armenian father and Anglo-Indian mother, acknowledges his hybrid identity in a deliberately honest, refreshing and inspiring way in his book. The reader is a time traveller as he reflects on his childhood, adolescence, immigrating to Canada, academic pursuits, passion for film, theatre and poetry, and provides insights into the sequencing of his publications. He shares intimate letters, photos, countless stories and friendships with the reader.

Koftikian asked Dr. Garebian what advice he had for diasporan Armenians who are journeying to understand their

Following the presentations and Q&A, the library was bursting with attendees who were purchasing books, meeting the authors and asking them to sign their copies. Light refreshments were available at this time of mingling. One could hear a peppering of “Well done!”, “Wonderful!” and “Marvellous!” around the library. It was a spectacular event, well attended and well received by the authors and attendees alike.

• Pieces of My Self: Fragments of an Autobiography is, in Koftikian’s words, an autobiographical venture wherein “Dr. Garebian masterfully creates a dynamic with the reader in piecing his life experiences with storytelling that invokes all the senses and compels questions, remembrance and active reading…it is generous with Dr. Garebian’s telling of his encounters with numerous actors, writers, academics and artists.”

She commented: “From childhood,

The Summer 2024 Studio will feature deep-sea robotics!

In this studio, students will draw inspiration from deep-sea creatures—their adaptability, movement, and capabilities—and craft robots and devices using flexible, eco-friendly materials like bioplastics. These creations will navigate underwater terrains with ease, powered by innovative mechanisms, ready to undertake critical missions and new adventures beneath the waves.

'The Armenian Guitars'

Levon Ichkhanian: A musical journey through By Rupen Janbazian

From June 11 to 15, Toronto's Gallery Gevik will host a unique exhibition that brings together music, art, and Armenian culture. Titled simply ‘The Armenian Guitars,’ this exhibition showcases a decadelong journey by renowned ArmenianCanadian guitarist and oudist Levon Ichkhanian. The collection of guitars, meticulously designed with Armenian motifs and symbols, represents the culmination of Ichkhanian's passion for music, culture, and heritage.

The beginning of an exploration

For Ichkhanian, the idea of blending Armenian heritage with the craft of guitar building came from an unexpected source. He recalls how his journey began with a quote from Jose Ramirez III of the Ramirez Luthier Dynasty, who noted that the oud, often considered an Arab instrument, actually originated in the Christian Armenian communities in the early centuries A.C. This insight sparked a journey for Ichkhanian, leading him to commission a custom-built oud with Armenian motifs by Luthier Khaled Al Halabi. It was the beginning of an exploration that would eventually result in the 'The Armenian Guitars' exhibition.

Over the course of ten years, Ichkhanian collected guitars that depict the Armenian narrative through various artistic methods, including paintings, etchings, engravings, inlays, and symbols. The guitars incorporate precious materials such as gold, silver, amber, mother-of-pearl, and apricot wood from Armenia. This extensive collection will be on public display for the first time at Gallery Gevik, allowing visitors to explore the fusion of art and music that Ichkhanian has crafted.

Levon's musical journey

Ichkhanian's path to becoming a celebrated guitarist and oudist began in Beirut, Lebanon. Born into a family of musicians in 1964, he was exposed to various musical styles from a young age. His father, Edouard Ichkhanian, was a renowned musical director for Middle Eastern artists, and his familial influences shaped Levon's early interest in music.

At the age of 12, Levon's family immigrated to Canada, where he began to explore the electric guitar. Just a year later, at 13, he had his first professional gig with Adiss Harmandian, a pioneer

modern Armenian singer and one of the cornerstones of Levon's musical influences. His career took off from there, and he quickly became known for his versatility, mastering several instruments, including the fretted and fretless guitars, oud, bouzouki, mandolin, and banjitar.

Levon's musical journey has spanned nearly five decades, with extensive experience in various genres, including jazz, pop, and traditional music. His dedication to excellence has earned him numerous accolades, including the Toronto Musicians' Association's 2022 Musician of the Year award. He's also the recipient of the Governor General of Canada's acknowledgement for musical excellence and other awards recognizing his contributions to music and culture.

The Ichkhanians are renowned as the first Armenian-Lebanese diasporic family of professional musicians, with eleven members to date. The family's musical legacy began with Antoine, who played the oud, and Joseph, a professor of music who founded the classical guitar program at the Beirut Conservatory of Music. Joseph also authored Méthode Moderne de Guitare in 1970, a book still in print that continues to be widely used by guitarists. Their other brother Jacques was a master flamenco guitarist, and their cousin, Hovannes, was the scholar and performer of the Armenian tar. Hovannes also authored numerous music method books and served as the choirmaster for the Etchmiadzin Cathedral in Armenia.

Sarah and Thalia, became guitarists and pianists, respectively. Antoine's son and daughter, Joseph and Sonia, pursued careers as guitarists, singers, and pianists. Most recently, Levon's daughter, Taline, has joined the family musical tradition as a singer, making her the eleventh Ichkhanian musician.

The Armenian connection

According to Ichkhanian, 'The Armenian Guitars'exhibition is more than just a showcase of beautiful instruments; it's a reflection of Ichkhanian's deep-rooted connection to his Armenian heritage. In a recent conversation, he spoke about the importance of storytelling through music and how it relates to the Armenian experience. "There are many ways of telling a story," he says. "And for me, the best way to tell a story is when someone is receiving it without being

He explains that a dear friend once told him that life is archery: "You prepare and practice all you want, but when it's time to take a couple of steps back, take aim, and let the then you let it go, it's no longer in your hands. Once you let that arrow go, you have no control. Whatever happens, happens. And that's the beauty of it. And that's what I call the unknown--the precious unknown. Sometimes, you don't know what's going to connect with people. Oftentimes, people put so much extra effort into it. And for me, it's like, 'no, no, just be yourself and find the best in yourself."

International scholars confirm the incontestable nature of the Armenian Genocide

International scholars undertake research and publications on genocide and human rights studies, documenting some of the darkest chapters of human history. The Zoryan Institute, in its search for affirmation of the Armenian Genocide, has commissioned scholars of various nationalities to conduct research and analysis on archival documents from different countries and published their work in periodicals and books. The books below feature the results of such research by world-renowned scholars from various disciplines, offering a clear perspective on the Armenian Genocide perpetrated by the Ottoman Turkish State.

Wolfgang Gust, a German journalist, historian, author, chief of heading for the magazine Der Spiegel, and independent scholar, with the help of his wife Ingrid Gust, collected, researched, and restored, over 11 years, documents from the German Foreign Office archives during the First World War. His book, The Armenian Genocide: Evidence from the German Foreign Office Archives, 1915-1916, compiles findings from one of the uncensored sources of communication between German foreign diplomats stationed in the Ottoman Empire and their superiors in Berlin. The book was published in German (2005), Turkish (2012), and in English (2014).

Some 218 telegrams, letters and reports from German consular officials in the Ottoman Empire to the Foreign Office in Berlin describe the unfolding genocide of the Armenians. This material is unimpeachable by those who would deny the Armenian Genocide, as it is from Turkey’s own wartime ally. It provides researchers with a deeper understanding of the actions and the motives of the perpetrators of the Armenian Genocide. The German edition of the book played a significant role in the German Parliament’s recognition of the Armenian Genocide on June 2, 2016. The Co-Chair of the Green Alliance Party of Germany, Cem Ozdemir, during his visit to the Zoryan Institute, had this say: “Wolfgang Gust’s work and that of the Zoryan Institute was very crucial because it was the first time that we saw the documents of the German Foreign Ministry, and these documents are probably the best-saved archive in the world on the Armenian Genocide.”

In December 1915, the German Ambassador, Count Paul Wolff-Metternich, to Constantinople wrote to the Imperial Chancellor, Theobald von Bethmann Hollweg: “… Our displeasure over the persecution of the Armenians should be clearly expressed in our press and an end be put to our gushing over the Turks. Whatever they are accomplishing is due to our doing; those are our officers, our cannons, our money… In order to achieve any success in the Armenian question, we will have to inspire fear in the Turkish government regarding the consequences. If, for military considerations, we do not dare to confront it with a firmer stance, then we will have no choice but… to stand back and watch how our ally continues to massacre.” The Chancellor’s response: “The proposed public reprimand of an ally in the course of a war would be an act which is unprecedented in history. Our only aim is to keep Turkey on our side until the end of the war, no matter whether, as a result, Armenians do perish or not.”

Late Armenian scholar Vakhan Dadrian and Turkish scholar Taner Açkam have explored the Turkish military archives together. Judgment at Istanbul: The Armenian Genocide Trials is an authoritative translation and detailed analysis of the Takvim-i Vekâyi, the official Ottoman Government record of the Turkish Military Tribunals concerning the crimes committed against the Armenians during the First World War.

In the aftermath of its disastrous defeat, an inquiry commissioned by the Ottoman government in 1919 presented enough preliminary evidence to organize a series of trials involving the perpetrators of these crimes. These authors have compiled the documentation of the trial proceedings in English

for the first time and situated them within their historical and legal context. These documents show that Wartime Cabinet ministers, Young Turk party leaders, and others inculpated in these crimes were court-martialed by the Turkish Military Tribunals. Most were found guilty and received sentences ranging from prison with hard labour to death. In remarkable contrast to Nuremberg, the Turkish Military Tribunals were conducted solely based on existing Ottoman domestic penal codes.

This substitution of a national for an international criminal court stands in history as a unique initiative of national self-condemnation. This compilation is significantly enhanced by an extensive analysis of the historical background, political nature and legal implications of the criminal prosecution of the twentieth century’s first state-sponsored crime of genocide against its own citizens.

Turkey has gone through significant transformations over the last century–from the Ottoman Empire and the Young Turk era to the Republic of today–but throughout, it has demonstrated troubling continuities in its encouragement and deployment of mass violence. In particular, the construction of a Sunni Muslim-Turkish identity has been achieved in part by designating ethnic-religious groups, including Alevis, Armenians, Assyrians, Jews, Greeks, Kurds, and Yazidis, as ‘internal enemies’ at whom public hatred can be directed.

This volume provides a wide range of case studies and historiographical reflections on the alarming recurrence of such violence in Turkish history. It shows not only how atrocities against ethnic-religious groups have propelled the nation’s very sense of itself but also how the impunity of these atrocities has contributed to broader patterns of violence in the Middle East, including the rise of ISIS and other non-state actors and their violence against minorities.

Amidst the headlines of escalating tensions between nations, devastating conflicts, and unease around genocide denial globally, it can be difficult to make sense of how to move forward. The Zoryan Institute strives to raise awareness about and enrich the field of genocide studies and human rights through academic endeavours. The Institute publishes and sponsors many books, articles, and journals alongside its university program and diaspora studies. We believe these three books should be in every human rights library worldwide and Armenian homes as part of contemporary Armenian history.
