եւ շուրջ դարու մը պատմութիւնը արժանաբար կրող Թորոնթոյի Ս.

Երրորդութիւն հայց. Առաք.

եկեղեցւոյ մէջ վերջերս աշխուժօրէն կ'ընթանան վերանորոգութեան աշխատանքները։

Մինչեւ 1953 թուականը, Yonge եւ Dundas փողոցներու խաչմերուկին վրայ գտնուող Ս. Երրորդութիւն Անկլիքան եկեղեցւոյ կողմէ հիւրընկալուելէ ետք, համայնքը կառուցած է Թորոնթոյի հայկական առաջին եկեղեցին՝ քաղաքի կեդրոնը գտնուող Woodlawn եւ Yonge փողոցներու խաչմերուկին մօտ։ Նորակառոյց եկեղեցին անուանակոչուած է Սուրբ Երրորդութիւն, առ ի երախտագիտութիւն Անկլիքան Սուրբ Երրորդութիւն եկեղեցւոյ, որ տարիներով հիւրընկալած է թորոնթոհայ համայնքը։ 1987ին, ծուխը կառուցած է ներկայի Ս. Երրորդութիւն հոյակերտ տաճարը, որը օծուած է ձեռամբ՝ երջանկայիշատակ Վազգէն Ա. Ամենայն հայոց կաթողիկոսի։ Գանատահայոց թեմի փոխառաջնորդ, Ս. Երրորդութիւն եկեղեցւոյ հոգեւոր հովիւ տէր Զարեհ աւ. քհնյ. Զարգարեանի եւ եկեղեցւոյ Ծխական խորհուրդի նախաձեռնութեամբ, 37 տարիներու բազմաբնոյթ եւ կենսունակ գործունէութիւն ծաւալած եկեղեցին, այսօր ընդհանուր վերանորոգութեան կ’ենթարկուի։ 2024-ի Սուրբ ծննդեան

տօնէն անմիջապէս ետք ընթացք առած աշխատանքը, տակաւին

մեծ թափով կը շարունակուի։

Վերանորոգութեան մաս կը կազմեն, կառոյցի ներքին պատերու եւ սիւներու ներկի, Սուրբ խորանի սալապատումի, ձայնային եւ

տեսանկարահանման համակարգի, գորգերու նորոգութիւնները եւ ընդհանուր բարեզարդումը։ Այս առթիւ, յատուկ շնորհակալութեան արժանի են նորոգութեան

աշխատանքները ստանձնած այն ժրաջան վարպետները, որոնք ոչ միայն իրենց աշխատանքով, այլ եւ մանաւանդ Հայ եկեղեցւոյ հանդէպ իրենց անսակարկ հաւատքով եւ

նուիրական ոգիով, օրն ի բուն ամէն ջանք կը գործադրեն Սուրբ Յարութեան տօնի նախօրեակին վերանորոգութեան հսկայական աշխատանքը իր աւարտին

հասցնելու։

Սիրելինե՛ր, հայ հաւատքի եւ ազգային ինքնութեան պահպանման ի խնդիր, այսու կը դիմենք թորոնթոհայ համայնքի հաւատացեալներուն անխտիր, իրենց սրտաբուխ եւ

աղօթքի այս տան վերանորոգութեան

ի նպաստ։

Թորոնթոհայ ամսագիր թորոնթոհայութեան ձայնը՝ 2005-էն ի վեր

«Գանատահայութիւնը դարձեալ ընդառաջեց իր արեան կանչին».

համար աւելի քան 545 հազար տոլար հանգանակուած է

ՀՕՄ-ի Գանատայի շրջանային վարչութիւնը հաղորդագրութեամբ մը կը տեղեկացնէ, որ արցախահայութեան օժանդակութեան համար մեկնարկած հանգանակային արշաւին մինչ օրս նուիրաբերուած է աւելի քան 545 հազար գանատական տոլար։

Անդարառնալով Արցախի բռնագրաւման եւ տեղահանուած արցախահայութեան ծանր վիճակին, հաղորդագրութեան մէջ կ’ըսուի, որ «19 սեպտեմբեր 2023-ին դարձեալ բարբարոս ազերին լայնածաւալ յարձակում յայտարարեց Արցախի վրայ։ Դարձեալ մթագնեցաւ Արցախ աշխարհի երկնակամարը, որուն հետեւանքով կորսնցուցինք Արցախը։ Արցախէն բռնի տեղահանուած մեր արիւնակիցները ապաստան գտան մեր հայրենիքի երդիքին տակ։ Անոնք ծանրակշիռ օրեր ապրեցան եւ տակաւին կ’ապրին»։

ՀՕՄ-ի կեդրոնական վարչութիւնը այն ծանր իրավիճակին մէջ դարձեալ պատնէշի վրայ առաջինը եղաւ, որ Արցախցիին անմիջական կարիքներու օժանդակութեան ձեռնարկեց՝ զօրաշարժի ենթարկելով ՀՕՄ-ի համասփիւռքեան իր բոլոր մասնաճիւղերն ու անդամները:

Իր հերթին ՀՕՄ-ի Գանատայի շրջանային վարչութիւնը համագործակցութեամբ «Արցախի ընտանիքներու օժանդակութեան» միջմիութենական միացեալ մարմինին, անսակարկ նուիրումով, լայնածաւալ հանգանակային արշաւ մը ծրագրեց` օգնութեան ձեռք

երկարելու տեղահանուած ու տնտեսական ծանր պայմաններու տակ ապրող արցախցիին։

ՀՕՄ-ի Գանատայի շրջանային վարչութիւնը կը տեղեկացնէ, որ այս դժուար օրերուն մեր հայրենակիցներու միասնականութիւնն ու հզօր կամքը դրսեւորուեցաւ նուիրատուութիւններու ընդմէջէն եւ բոլորը մէկ բռունցքի նման զօրակցեցան եւ կը շարունակենք զօրակցիլ Արցախի մեր քոյրերուն եւ եղբայրներուն, որպէսզի անոնք արժանապատիւ կեանք մը ապրելու իրաւունքը ունենան։

Մինչ օրս հանագանակուած գումարը հասած է աւելի քան կէս միլիոն գանատական տոլարի: Շրջանային վարչութիւնը անհուն երախտագիտութեամբ շնորհակալութիւն կը յայտնէ բոլոր բարերարներուն եւ նուիրատուներուն, որոնք քաջ գիտակցելով իրավիճակին ծանրութեանը համագործակցեցան ՀՕՄ-ին հետ, իրենց նիւթական օժանդակութիւնը չխնայելով եւ մի՛շտ հաւատալով անոր սուրբ առաքելութեան։

Շնորհիւ նուիրատուներու ավներապահ աջակցութեան ՀՕՄ-ը անգամ մը եւս յաջողեցաւ նուաճել նոր բարձունք մը։

ՀՕՄ-ի Գանատայի շրջանային վարչութեան խնդրանքով, ստորեւ եւ յաջորդող երկու էջերուն վրայ հրատարակած ենք բոլոր նուիրատուներուն (անհատ եւ հաստատութիւններ) անունները անգլերէնով: ֎

Canadian Ambassador to Armenia engages with community officials at the Armenian Community Centre of Toronto

TORONTO–On Feb. 22, 2024, Canadian Ambassador to Armenia, Andrew Turner, visited the Armenian Community Centre of Toronto to engage in discussions with representatives from the Armenian National Committee of Canada (ANCC) and the Canada-Armenia Business Council (CABC).

The meeting-reception focused on the state of Canada-Armenia bilateral relations, with particular emphasis on the concerns and proposals regarding the support for the forcibly displaced people of Artsakh and the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Armenia.

"[We are]looking forward to many more fruitful engagements," read a part of the statement released by the Armenian-Canadian advocacy group.

Ambassador Turner, who has been serving as Canada's first resident ambassador to Armenia since Sept. 2023, has a distinguished career in diplomacy with extensive experience in the Middle East and South Asia. His visit to the Armenian Community Centre underscores Canada's ongoing commitment to strengthening its diplomatic and humanitarian ties with Armenia.

The opening of Canada's embassy in Yerevan in October 2023 marked a significant milestone in the two nations' relations, aimed at enhancing diplomatic presence and providing support amidst the ongoing crisis in Artsakh.

A few days after his visit to Toronto, Ambassador Turner attended a meeting of the Canada-Armenia Parliamentary Friendship Group. He was joined by

Anahit Harutyunyan, Armenia's Ambassador to Canada, along with senators, members of Parliament from all political parties, departmental officials, parliamentary staff, and representatives of the ANCC. The ANCC released a statement highlighting that the meeting addressed critical issues concerning the bilateral relations and the displaced Armenian population of Artsakh. ֎

Comedy unites: AGBU YP's benefit show to feature Mary Basmadjian

TORONTO–In the spirit of unity and resilience, the Armenian General Benevolent Union Young Professionals of Toronto (AGBU YP Toronto) is once again harnessing the power of laughter for a noble cause. Following the overwhelming success of their comedy show in December, the AGBU YP Toronto is proud to present another evening of comedy, this time featuring the talented Armenian-American standup comedian, actor, writer, and producer Mary Basmadjian. Known affectionately as the "Funny Armenian Girl," Mary brings her unique blend of humour, reflecting the nuances of the Armenian diaspora subculture and the immigrant experience in a way that resonates across cultural boundaries.

Set to take place at Absolute Comedy on Sunday, March 24, 2024, the show promises not just an array of laughs but also hope and solidarity; an event that exemplifies AGBU YP Toronto's dedication to strengthening community bonds and offering support to the forcibly displaced Armenians from Artsakh. Proceeds from the show will be going to the AGBU Global Fund.

The military operation launched by Azerbaijan on September 19 triggered one of the worst humanitarian crises in Armenian history and led to the displacement of over 100,000 Armenians from Artsakh to Armenia, where they have encountered numerous obstacles, including the struggle to secure housing and meet their basic needs.

In an effort to mitigate the impact of this crisis, the AGBU has established the Artsakh Relief Fund. This initiative aims to provide both immediate aid and sustained support for recovery to those impacted. The fund's activities cover a broad spectrum, ranging from combating malnutrition and offering mental health services to providing housing, vocational training, and immediate aid.

During the show, Basmadjian, a fixture on the Los Angeles comedy scene for over a decade, will also feature her beloved alter ego, Vartoush. Through characters like Vartoush, Mary engages in truth-telling and lesson-teaching, wrapped in humour and warmth, reflecting both the challenges and joys of life.

"We're excited to present the incredible Mary, a shining star in Armenian comedy, to the Toronto audience," shared AGBU YP Toronto co-chair Cassandra BertucciKurkjian. "Mary's unique blend of humour, inspired by her rich Armenian heritage and personal experiences, resonates deeply, especially in these challenging times. By hosting this event, we aim to not only entertain but also support the vital efforts of the AGBU Relief Fund, reflecting our commitment to uplift our community through both laughter and aid." «Տոհմիկ օր»-ուան՝ իր արուեստի միջոցաւ հանրածանօթ դառնալու թորոնթոհայ գաղութին, որ բարձրօրէն գնահատեց անոր անկրկնելի արուեստը։ Նիւ Եորք հաստատուած եւ հոն ստեղծագործող Գէորգ Մուրատի արուեստին եւ աշխարհահռչակ անուն ձեռք բերելուն անկիւնադարձային առիթը կը հանդիսանայ «Ճուլիարտ» ուսումնարանի մէջ իր կատարած ելոյթը, որուն շնորհիւ դասական երաժիշտ, թաւջութակի վարպետ, աշխարհահռչակ Եօ-Եօ Մա կը հիանայ անոր արուեստով եւ զինք կը հրաւիրէ մաս կազմելու իր նուագախումբին։ Գէորգ Մուրատ 2004-էն մինչեւ այսօր մաս կը կազմէ այդ խումբին, որ աշխարհի տարբեր երկիրներու, ամենէն նշանաւոր բեմերու եւ սրահներու մէջ անհատական ծրագիրներով, բեմական ներկայացումներով, ինչպէս նաեւ՝ նշանաւոր երաժիշտներու հետ ելոյթներ տալով՝ կ’արժանանայ հանդիսատեսին բարձր գնահատանքին։ 2016 թուականին ան կ’արժանանայ Robert Bosch Stiftung մրցանակին՝ իր կարճ ֆիլմին շնորհիւ։ Ունի ՝ Four Acts for Syria (2018) վերնագիրով կարճ ֆիլմ մը, ինչպէս նաեւ՝ Մորկըն Նէւիլի նկարահանած The Music of Strangers վաւերագրական ֆիլմին մէջ հանդէս եկած է երաժիշտ Եօ եօ Մայի խումբին հետ։ Ժամանակի ընթացքին Գէորգ Մուրատ կը զարգացնէ իր գծագրական ներկայացումները եւ զանոնք կը կատարէ բեմին վրայ, կենդանի երաժշտութեան հետ զուգահեռ: Պարուսոյցներու, երգահաններու եւ գրողներու համատեղ կատարումներու ընկերակցութեամբ, անոնցմէ ներշնչուելով, տեղւոյն վրայ կը գծէ մեծածաւալ պաստառի վրայ։ Ահաւասիկ այսօր ալ՝միեւնոյն ուղին որդեգրելով Թորոնթոյի «Աղա Խան» թանգարանին բեմէն, փողային գործիքներով իրեն ընկերակցող թորոնթոբնակ, արմատներով ասորի երաժիշտ Մաճտ Սքքարի արեւելեան երաժշտութեան

իւրայատուկ հնչիւններուն կը միանան Կոմիտասի եւ Սայաթ Նովայի բիւրեղ երաժշտական ստեղծագործութիւնները, իսկ Գէորգ Մուրատի գծագրական արուեստին շնորհիւ մեծ պաստառին վրայ կը վերակենդանանան ո՛չ միայն Արեւելքի ժողովուրդը ու անոր դառն եւ ուրախ կեանքի պատմութիւնները, այլեւ՝ մեր մեծամեծները, նախնիները, ցեղասպանութեան արհաւիրքը ապրողներն ու նահատակուածները։

Անոնք շունչ կ’առնեն ու մեր ոսկեղինիկ այբուբենի տառերուն հետ միաձուլուած կը ներկայացուին պաստառին վրայ ու հոնկէ դուրս գալով կը թեւածեն պաստառին դէմ նստած՝ աշխարհի տարբեր երկիրներուն մէջ ծնած ու Թորոնթօ հաստատուած հանդիսատեսին հոգիին լարերուն վրայ։

Մերձաւոր Արեւելքի պատմութիւնը ներկայացնող իր այս աշխատանքին մէջ Գ. Մուրատ միաւորեց արուեստը, երաժշտութիւնն ու ընթացիկ իրադարձութիւնները, իսկ համահունչ երաժշտութեան ազդեցութենէն ներշնչուած` գեղարուեստական պատկերներու ընդմէջէն ան կրցաւ հանդիսատեսին մէջ արթնցնել նոր յոյսերու եւ լուսաւոր ապագայի տեսլականը, ուր բոլորիս ձայները միաւորող մարդկային բարութիւնը պիտի յաղթէր չարին։ Մօտաւորապէս մէկուկէս ժամ տեւած ցուցադրութիւնը վերջ գտաւ պաստառին վրայ տեղադրուած շատ ազդեցիկ հետեւեալ գրութեամբ՝ It is only when individual voice is held sacred that we will achieve harmony (Մենք կը հասնինք ներդաշնակութեան միայն այն ժամանակ, երբ իւրաքանչիւր անհատի ձայն սուրբ համարուի)։ Ցուցադրութենէն ետք շատ հետաքրքրական էր թանգարանի տնօրէնութեան եւ արուեստագէտներուն միջեւ եղած հարցազրոյցը, նամանաւանդ երբ իր ազգութեամբ եւ անոր արժանիքներով հպարտ

Գէորգ Մուրատը կը խօսէր պատմութեան ընթացքին հայերուն անցած դժուարին ճանապարհին եւ անոնց իրականացուցած բարձրորակ արուեստին, ստեղծագործութեան եւ ստեղծագործներուն բացառիկ տաղանդին եւ իւրայատկութեան մասին։

Բուռն ծափահարութիւններու ներքոյ հանդիսատեսն ու արուեստագէտը ուղղուեցան դէպի ցուցադրութեան սրահ, ուր տեղադրուած էր մեծածաւալ շերտերէ բաղկացած, ընդարձակ մակերեսներու վրայ իրականացուած քանդականման գծագրութիւններով ներկայացուած Seeing through Babel հսկայածաւալ աշխատանքը։ Ան կը վերիմաստաւորէ աստուածաշնչեան Բաբելոնի աշտարակը եւ որուն շրջանակի կորիզին մէջ հնագոյն պատմութեան այբուբեններով պատկերացուած է տարբեր լեզուներով խօսող եւ իրար անհաղորդակից դարձած մարդ արարածին պատմութիւնը։

Այս անկրկնելի քանդակը պիտի մնայ թանգարանին մէջ ու արժանանայ հայ եւ օտար այցելուներու գնահատականին։

The Naghash Ensemble’s journey of exile, spirituality, and musical innovation is coming to Toronto for the first time

The Naghash Ensemble of Armenia, led by the visionary Armenian-American composer John Hodian, is a remarkable fusion of ancient and contemporary musical traditions. Renowned for its evocative interpretations of the sacred texts by the 15thcentury Armenian mystic poet Mkrtich Naghash, the ensemble seamlessly blends the soulful essence of Armenian folk with the innovative approaches of new classical music, contemporary post-minimalism, and the vibrant energy of jazz and rock. This synthesis is rooted deeply within Armenian cultural heritage while extending its resonance to a global audience.

As it prepares for its much-anticipated Toronto debut on April 4, followed by a performance in Montreal on April 7, the ensemble’s journey celebrates its expanding influence and the universal appeal of its diverse musical palette. From New York to Armenia in search of authenticity

Born and raised near Philadelphia, John Hodian has been a composer at heart from an early age. His journey into the world of music eventually led him to New York, where he carved out a living by scoring movies and television shows. Despite finding success in this field, Hodian never truly felt a connection to his commercial work. “There came a point where I decided to halt all commercial projects to focus solely on composing music that was meaningful to me,” he explains. For a considerable period, Hodian found himself adrift, unable to produce anything that felt significant. “It wasn’t until the moment I experienced that captivating voice and stumbled upon Mkrtich Naghash’s poignant poetry that everything changed,” he

The ‘captivating voice’ was Hasmik Baghdasaryan’s, and the setting was the ancient temple of Garni in Armenia. This moment of inspiration, coupled with years of searching for the right text, led Hodian to the poetry of Mkrtich Naghash. The two discoveries reignited his passion for music and laid the groundwork for what would eventually evolve into The Naghash Ensemble.

In the early stages of his Armenian musical exploration, John Hodian took a bold step by sharing a rough recording of his work with Tigran Mansurian, a towering figure in Armenian classical music. “He’s undeniably Armenia’s most noted living composer,” Hodian recalls. “I had met him, and I have a tremendous amount of respect for his work and his thoughts on music.” The response from Mansurian’s camp came a few days later, stirring a mix of apprehension and dread in Hodian. “I heard from his assistant that he wanted to talk to me. I thought, ‘Oh! I must be in some kind of trouble,’” Hodian shared, likening the anticipation to a nervewracking summons from a school principal. He feared a reprimand for potentially dishonouring Armenian heritage and misusing the talents of his ensemble members.

However, the actual encounter took an unexpectedly affirming turn. With Naghash’s poignant reflections on exile, Hodian found the perfect vessel for his musical explorations, setting all of Naghash’s surviving 15 poems to music over 12 years. This project has since evolved into a series of albums and performances that have captivated audiences worldwide, from the sacred spaces of Armenia to the

prestigious stages of the Paris Philharmonic, Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie, and New York’s Carnegie Hall.

Hodian reflects on the ensemble’s journey, emphasizing the diversity of its audience and the breadth of its appeal. “Performing with the ensemble is a gift,” Hodian says, explaining that the music, while deeply Armenian in its roots, reaches out to a global audience. The story of The Naghash Ensemble is a narrative of exploration, identity, and the desire to create something that resonates universally: “It wasn’t a conscious decision to spread Armenian culture,” Hodian explains, “but that has become a beautiful aspect of what we’ve achieved.”

The ensemble’s instrumentation and repertoire reflect a deliberate choice, balancing classical elements with Armenian folk instruments to create a sound that is both innovative and deeply rooted in tradition. Hodian’s background in classical music, and jazz, and his Armenian heritage inform the ensemble’s unique sound. “The music I write for The Naghash Ensemble reflects all of those influences,” Hodian explains, underlining the diverse musical landscape that shapes his work.

The ensemble’s music has found a home among diverse audiences, reflecting its wide-reaching appeal and transcending the Armenian community’s boundaries. The Canadian concerts are a continuation of this journey, with Hodian expressing particular excitement about the Ensemble’s Toronto debut. “I’m thrilled about the upcoming Canadian shows... I’m very grateful for the community and the Prelacy for putting this together,” Hodian states, acknowledging the support and anticipation surrounding their performances in Toronto and Montreal. This tour represents a new chapter for the ensemble and offers a rare opportunity for Canadian audiences to experience their mesmerizing blend of music and spirituality firsthand.

Offstage, John Hodian’s artistic journey doesn’t pause; it delves deeper into music and theatre, continuously seeking new avenues for creative expression. Among the intriguing new projects he hints at, one stands out for its ambition and cultural significance—an Armenian Christmas oratorio. With a vision to introduce a work that could stand shoulder to shoulder with the likes of Handel’s “Messiah” or Bach’s “Christmas Oratorio,” Hodian is pioneering a venture into uncharted territory for Armenian music. “Discussing upcoming projects is something I usually shy away from to avoid disappointment if they don’t come to fruition. However, this oratorio is shaping up to be something special, and I’m genuinely excited about its progress,”

Hodian candidly shares.

This initiative is not merely about adding to the repertoire of Armenian music but crafting a new tradition that melds the ancient with the modern. Hodian is collaborating with Vahram Martirosyan, one of Armenia’s most renowned contemporary writers with a deep knowledge of Classical (Grabar) and Middle Armenian, to skillfully weave contemporary and ancient texts. By doing so, he is creating something that promises to be both reverential and revolutionary. “We’re drawing from a rich tapestry of ancient texts, interlacing them with modern narratives to create something that resonates with today’s audience,” Hodian explains. The ensemble has already begun the process of bringing this vision to life, with plans to start recording excerpts in the near future.
