POM Film Festival Celebrates 10 Years with a Week Long Program By Dr. Roubina Yeghoyan In its 10th year, POM Film Festival will cover a diverse range of insightful films, with exclusive events and performances by musical talents including the French musical group, Collectif Medz Bazaar, Toronto favourites, Harout Bedrossian with Horovel, and Brazilian singer Isabella Bablumian. Special screenings include Operation Nemesis, which will feature panelists, actor Eric Bogosian and academic Marian Mesrobian MacCurdy. The Zoryan Insitute will also participate in a screening of Stony Paths by French director Arnaud Khayadjanian, while advocate and author Matthew Karanian will be part of a series of films devoted to Western Armenia. These special screenings, along with an encore presentation of the feature, The Cut at the Regent Theatre, are organized in the spirit of the centennial commemoration of the Genocide.ý Many think fondly about their youthful memories of summer, those warm experiences at camp, where friendships and adventures were made. To others, camp has meant much more, as a place deeply rooted in the development of their identity, sense of community and heritage. This is the story told in the powerful documentary, Our Atlantis: The Story of Camp Armen, which will be screened during the festival. Film-maker Artur Sukiasyan, having gained funding through the Hrant Dink Foundation, explores the implications of the Turkish seizure of Camp Armen, located in the Tuzla district of Istanbul. The film offers an informative context to a difficult situation, covered extensively in the recent year by both the Armenian and the Turkish press.ý The Festival kicks-off on Monday November 16th with a special series of films titled 100 Years and We re Still Dancing, which will include a live performance by Hamazkayin's Erepuni Dance Ensemble. Additionally, POM X will feature two major motion pictures by legendary French director Robert Guediguian. The first, Don't Tell Him the Boy was Mad, stars Simon Abkarian, and is based on the personal account of Spanish journalist Jose Antonio Gurriarran, an unintended victim of an alleged ASALA bombing in 1980 who went on to become a spokesperson for the Armenian Cause throughout Europe. of a soiree catered toward a delightful carnival theme. The comedy offers a refreshing setting, situated in southern France by the seaside, where dreams are pursued while fantasy and reality overlap. Ariane's Thread is a poignant film with a strong female lead that will be sure to inspire and uplift those in attendance. POM also will present noteworthy films directed by non-Armenians.
