Women filmmakers and Armenian Village Theme Highlight 2014 POM Film Festival Classic Folk Ensemble Horovel to perform at Gala by Dr. Roubina Yeghoyan In an industry dominated by men, a festival record of 10 films by women filmmakers will headline the 2014 Pomegranate Film Festival Program, November 5-9. Most notable are two feature films by female directors in Armenia; Our Village by Yelena Arshakyan and The Abode by Lusine Sargsyan. The festival s ever-popular Gala Night commencing with cocktails on Saturday, November 8, will feature a classical Armenian village theme with a special performance by the authentic Armenian folk ensemble Horovel. Stars will be in abundance for the North American premiere of this year's gala film a comedy for the first time Thank You, Dad, starring Michael Poghosian (If Only Everyone) and directed by Hrach Keshishyan (Garegin Nzhdeh). Keshishyan will be arriving in Canada for both the gala film, as well as his brand new family comedy, The House in the Heart, which will be screened on the Festival's final day Sunday, November 9. In addition to both of Keshishyan's blockbusters, 25 other films will be making their world or North American premieres at this year's Festival. Returning directors include television sensation Jack Topalian, who will have two new films in competition at this year's festival including the world premiere of his short comedy The Newlyweds along with his short drama Law Firm. Director Gor Kirakosian will be in attendance once again for the Canadian premiere of his new film The Knight's Move. Similar to his previous films Big Story in a Small City and Lost & Found

in Armenia, Girakosian's new film is an action-comedy and will close the curtain at this year's festival on November 9. Winner of the 2013 Best Short Film Award at the festival, Jivan Avetisyan, will present his new feature, a drama about Karabakh s war for independence, Tevanik. The film, which was awarded top honours at this summer's Golden Apricot Film Festival in Yerevan, will be screened on November 9. Los Angeles based director Nazo Arjoyan also returns to the Festival with his first feature film When my Sorrow Died: The Legend of Armen Ra & the Theremin, making its Canadian premiere on the same day. Other veterans of the festival include Robert Davidian, whose riveting feature documentary The March to Democracy will shock
viewers with the details of electoral abnormalities that were unearthed during the last presidential election in Armenia. The screening will take place on November 8 in collaboration with the Armenian Renaissance Toronto Chapter. Australian-Armenian director and winner of the Best Short Documentary Film at the 2013 festival, Shahane Bekarian, will present his new film Genocide Memoir #1 as part of the Tales from the Diaspora series on November 8. Past festival jury member, Hrant Alianak, makes his film directorial debut with his award-winning feature film A Trip to the Island on November 7. Alianak is one of four Toronto area directors who will be showcased at the festival, along with returning directors Ara Sagherian and Garine Tcholakian
who will be presenting their short films, Trick or Treat and Subway Stories, respectively. Academy Award nominated Director Atom Egoyan will commence the procession of Toronto talent on November 7 with his latest blockbuster, The Captive. After an eight-year hiatus, Festival favourite Vahe Babaian returns from Los Angeles to present his short documentary about Armenia's Tumo Centre at the festival's opening night, followed by Nigol Bezjian's latest film Thank You Ladies & Gentlemen, on November 6, with all proceeds to be donated to Syrian-Armenian Relief.
