You Are What You Eat: is this accurate?

ou’ve likely heard the saying, you are what you eat. But is this scientifically sound or just an urban myth? The answer may both be surprising and more complicated than one would think. While what you eat doesn’t necessarily make you what you are, what you eat dramatically affects your physical and mental health, even at a cellular level.

It turns out that just eating fats won’t make you fat. What may be more accurate is that eating small amounts of literally any food won’t affect you too much.
However, it is true that what you eat can significantly affect your mood. Something we often forget about when we eat is our so-called “brain-gut connection.” Simply understood, when you eat healthy food, you feel better and are happier. On the contrary, your happiness and mood will take a hit when you eat unhealthy food.
Y
Your Mood May Be What You Eat
Therefore, the real risk isn’t eating fat, cholesterol, sugar or anything else; it’s eating anything in high amounts. Instead of attacking these food groups, what we should be focusing on is the size of our portions. Perhaps a more accurate saying would be, you are what you eat a lot of. But, of course, that’s not so catchy.
You Are What You Eat in Excess
Top Doctor Magazine / Issue 143 / 11
At its surface, this phrase tells you that what you eat determines what you are, and there is some truth to this. After all, what you eat is what your body uses to build cells. Oxford researchers determined that diet can affect the genetic composition of organisms. DNA, the building block of your body, can be affected by your diet.
So, in some sense, what you eat does become what you are. After all, eating foods high in fat will lead to weight gain, while eating lean foods will help with weight management. This sounds like it could be scientifically based, but is it?
What Does It Mean to Say, You Are What You Eat?
With the dramatic effect of food in mind, how can we eat

dieticians say that the best diet plan is eating in moderation while focusing on plant foods. This approach will keep your fiber high while ensuring that you’re eating well in moderation. It’s better to make sure that you’re getting enough fiber by eating lots of plants and eating some carbs, fats and proteins than to neglect one and overly prioritize another.
It even goes beyond this simple connection. Shockingly, it turns out that some foods can do more than just make you feel good or bad but can cause you to be more aggressive, confident, happy, uncomfortable or even increase pain. For example, even without consumption, spicy foods can incline us toward aggressive thoughts or intent. On the other hand, sweet foods trigger neuroreceptors in the stomach that can improve your mood, causing you to be happier and more confident. Hot food also affects your mood, increasing the discomfort and pain your body experiences. So, while it’s not necessarily true that you are what you eat, what you eat can dramatically affect you.

and unfortunately, it’s not so simple as avoiding one type of food. Whether it’s a high-fat diet like the Mediterranean diet or the fad diet that targets cutting out a different food group every five years, dieting is not a one-sizefits-all solution. Instead, the best advice you can probably receive for a healthy lifestyle is to focus on unprocessed foods, vegetables, fruits, nuts, whole grains and foods high in fiber and
Ultimately, the saying, you are what you eat is not entirely inaccurate, although it is misleading. Eating something unhealthy in moderation will not make you unhealthy, and eating something (or even not eating something) that the current trends say is healthy in overabundance won’t make you healthy either. The truth lies in eating in moderation.

DRINKING
The first healthy habit to be implemented into your health is limiting unhealthy substance consumption. This means cutting out foods, drinks and other unhealthy habits, with smoking and drinking at the top of the list.
SMOKING
Unsurprisingly, those who want a longer life should avoid smoking. Smoking is an incredibly unhealthy addiction that can reduce your life expectancy by as much as 10 years. Moreover, a study from Johns Hopkins found that people who adopted four smart habits, one of which was avoiding smoking, reduced their chance of death from all causes by 80%. Thus, it is essential to quit or avoid smoking entirely in order to prolong your lifespan.
14
Drinking alcohol is not necessarily harmful in itself. However, excessive drinking (i.e., consuming 14-25 alcoholic drinks a week) can shorten life spans by one or two years, even as much as 4 to 5 years in extreme cases.
MINIMIZE UNHEALTHY SUBSTANCES
ho hasn’t thought about ways to prolong their youth? And while it may sound like a fantasy, there are ways to preserve your youthful vigor to a certain extent. Obviously, eternal youth is not possible, but it is possible to extend your lifespan by following healthy habits.

On the other hand, moderation (one glass per day for women, two for men) is more than salutary. Limiting alcohol consumption reduces the risks associated with excessive drinking and can extend your lifespan by lowering your risk for heart illnesses.

EAT HEALTHY FOODS
BE ACTIVE IN YOUR MENTAL HEALTH
Nuts are a great source of minerals that have been linked to a 39% decreased risk for premature death. Likewise, plants have been found to reduce cancer risks by 29-52% and lower premature death risks by 12-15%. So, regardless of what you like to eat or how many calories you need, you have to eat more nuts and plants if you want a longer life!
Another key healthy habit for a long life is regular exercise. To stay healthy for as long as possible, it is vital that you get up and move every single day. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you need to become a marathon runner.
Sleep, while often overlooked, is an invaluable part of a healthy lifestyle. However, both over and undersleeping are highly detrimental to your health. According to a study on people’s sleep, sleeping too little or sleeping far too much can increase your risk of death. To keep a careful balance between these two extremes, try to go to bed at the same time every night and get 7-8 hours of rest every night.
Top Doctor Magazine / Issue 143 / 17
The last tip is to be active in mental health. While sometimes overlooked, your mental health can have unquestionable effects on your life. It’s essential to minimize negative mental states like stress, anger, loneliness and fear since they can shorten your lifespan. Thus, keeping your mind positive and being active in your social life is critical to keeping your life healthy and long.
EXERCISE OFTEN
One study has found that being active for 15 minutes every day can add up to three years to your life! Additionally, the aforementioned Johns Hopkins study concluded that daily exercise is one of the four smart habits we must implement for a long, healthy life. So, if you want a healthy life, make sure you exercise for 15-30 minutes a day!
GET A HEALTHY AMOUNT OF SLEEP
A PARTING REMINDER
The key to a long life isn’t the fountain of youth or some magical potion— it’s living a healthy lifestyle. By exercising regularly, managing your diet, sleeping enough, staying positive and steering clear of unhealthy substances, you can keep your life healthier longer. The real fountain of youth hides in the habits you practice every day!
A key component of living a long life is eating healthily. While this may look different for each person regarding calorie amounts of food groups, everyone can benefit from eating more plants and nuts.

DETECTING
Testing for STIs
Once this conversation has taken place, your doctor will determine which tests are best for your circumstances. This step is necessary because dif ferent STIs require different kinds of tests. They include urine tests, cheek swabs, blood tests, physical examinations and removal of fluids or cell sam ples with a swab.
If you suspect that you or a loved one is suffering from a sexually transmit ted infection, the first step is to contact your primary care physician. Once you’ve scheduled a visit to your doctor, being honest with them about your sexual activity is imperative. Testing for STIs is not a regular part of a stan dard checkup, so you should not schedule a checkup expecting to be tested. Remember that honesty is the first step in getting tested for STIs.

20
Taking responsibility for your sexual health ranges from planning out pregnancy and pregnancy prevention to growing intimacy with your partner through understanding how your partner best receives pleasure. But one element of sexual health that doesn’t often get the attention it deserves is sexually transmitted diseases and infections. Whether you do or do not have any personal experience with them, sexually transmitted diseases are a subject that every health-conscious adult needs to understand.
Top Doctor Magazine / Issue 143 / 21

What are the Symptoms of STIs?
Some sexually transmitted infections are asymptomatic, meaning no symptoms will present themselves even if you do have the infection. Although no symptoms may be present, it is still possible for you to pass the infection along to your sexual partners, which means it’s important to get tested regularly.

Not all tests will render immediate results; some will come back the same day, while others can take days or even weeks to show results. After getting tested, make a note to call your doctor after some time has passed if you don’t find out your test results immediately.
Whether you have personal experience with sexually transmitted infections or not, it’s essential to know what steps you and future partners can take to avoid catching them in the future. One of the simplest is to remember to use condoms - whether made out of latex or polyurethane - every time you engage in sexual intercourse. A more comprehensive prevention method is to keep track of and reduce your number of sexual partners since an increase in partners increases the chance of getting an STI.
It is also critical to understand that some kinds of sexual activity carry more risk than others. Anal sex, for example, poses a certain risk to tissues in the rectum that can break easily. Because it involves a potential tissue rupture, anal sex carries a higher risk of transmitting an STI. Bodily fluids, of course, can also transmit STIs. So, whether or not you’re in a monogamous relationship, knowing the facts about STI symptoms and testing is crucial for taking responsibility for your sexual health.
How Can I Avoid STIs?
The list of symptoms includes some that are similar to the flu, such as fever, body aches, swollen glands and a general tired feeling. Other symptoms are more localized to the genitalia, such as unusual discharge, itching, sores or bumps and a burning sensation during urination. Increased frequency of urination, as well as irritation or swelling of the penis, vagina, vulva or anus, can also be an indicator. Symptoms also include fleshcolored warts around the genital area, blisters around the genital area or scaly rashes over the palms of the hands and soles of the feet.
22
The range of options for detecting STIs available in modern medical facilities is impressive, but how can you tell if you should go in for testing in the first place? The key is to stay on the lookout for the physical symptoms that might indicate the presence of a sexually transmitted disease or infection. These symptoms vary for different infections, so don’t be afraid to research.

How ExperiencesLifeCanShapeFood
WORDS BY PETER C.

The food we eat is one of the most important things that affect our health and quality of life, which is why it is essential to explore what drives our food choices and why we make the choices we do.
Many factors influence our tastes and preferences. Culture, religion, what we were taught when we were younger and even the country where you live can impact your food preferences.

It is important to keep in mind that many factors influence what kind of food we like, and some are more important than others. People tend to have food preferences based on their biology (e.g., inborn feelings and tastes) because they can’t control these factors. For example, kids
Genetic Influence on Food Preferences
grow up with an innate idea about their food preferences, which often comes from their parents’ tastes.
There are also evolutionary reasons that influence our food preferences. If your ancestors ate a particular type of food, your body might have developed specific tastes that make you want to eat that same food. For example, if your ancestors were

Places with a strong influence from a long-established culture still prefer traditional food over the more popular processed foods. Some cultures have a high-fat diet, such as the Inuit in North America and the Maasai in Africa. Other cultures have a very low-fat diet, such as that of the Okinawans, who consume a lot of vegetables and root crops.
Many cultures have their own set of food preferences. For example, in most Southeast Asian countries, every meal is prepared with rice. In other countries, especially in Europe, people prefer to eat their meals with
Cultural and religious beliefs influence food consumption and preferences as well. For example, followers of Judaism eat kosher food. Followers of Islam only consume halal foods to be able to obey their faith, which restricts them from eating food such as pork.
Several factors can affect our food preferences, including life experiences. Some tastes may be acquired through exposure to certain foods, while others respond to certain dishes’ positive or negative experiences. Our environment and culture can also play a role in shaping our tastes. Ultimately, it is important to be open to new flavors and experiment with different foods to develop a well-rounded palate.

Economic factors can affect your food preferences. Often, food choices depend on food affordability and availability in your living area. Income fluctuations can also change your preferences.
People who are vegan or vegetarian do not consume any animal products
In the consumption process, people pay attention not only to the available food type and its taste but also to prices. Thus, economic factors influence consumer preferences. For example, when an individual’s increased earnings allow for a better quality of living, such as healthier restaurant choices or more expensive products, they tend to be more careful in choosing food items. DERMATOLOGISTINGREDIENTSAPPROVED TO STRENGTHEN YOUR SKIN AS YOU AGE

Top Doctor Magazine / Issue 143 / 29
The aging process can sometimes make skincare feel like a losing battle, but there’s no need to throw in the towel! Plentiful research has gone into the science of skincare, and we’re now able to benefit from recommendations by professionals.
WRITTEN BY NATHAN PIPKIN
The first indispensable ingredient when it comes to healthy skin is sunscreen. This may be an obvious choice for those of us who live in sunny climates, but the fact is that sunscreen isn’t useful only for long days at the beach. Exposure to sunlight can do quite a bit of damage to your skin. The possible effects include the destruction of elastic and collagen fibers, dilation of small blood vessels under the skin, yellowing of the skin and pre-cancerous lesions. The good news is that effective sunscreen can mitigate these risks.
Man or woman, young or old, we all have a responsibility to care for ourselves. For our quality of life and the benefit of our loved ones, we should do everything possible to maintain our health, including skincare!
How Should I Choose Sunscreen?
There is now a dizzying array of sunscreen available in your average supermarket. While it’s up to you to choose the right brand for you and your budget, a few general guidelines from dermatologists will make the best choice stand out. The first piece of advice is to select a sunscreen listed as broad-spectrum SPF, which will protect your skin from UVA rays and UVB rays.
The last ingredient is retinoids, the workhorses of the skincare world. Derived from vitamin A, retinoids can be found in skincare products applied in the evening instead of the morning. Retinoids help your skin build collagen, reducing lines and wrinkles resulting from aging and stimulating the production of blood vessels. While there are prescription-strength retinoid products on the market, you don’t need a diagnosis to seek out products that can help your skin remain strong despite aging.
30
Since free radicals can break down your skin’s collagen, it’s essential to build a line of defense. This is where antioxidants come in. By reducing inflammation, antioxidants fight against free radicals and the effects of aging. They interrupt the oxidative stress that limits your skin’s ability to repair itself.
Two other things must be kept in mind when choosing sunscreen. First, your sunscreen’s sun protection factor (SPF) should be at least 30. Choosing a sunscreen with SPF 30 means that you’ll be protected from about 97% of UVB rays. Since it’s nearly impossible to filter out 100% of these rays, 97% is a perfectly adequate goal to aim for.
You should enter the sunscreen aisle with the knowledge that waterproof and water-resistant have different meanings. Sunscreen is only water-resistant, and the bottle will typically tell you whether that resistance is good for 40 minutes or 80 minutes of swimming. Either way, the best practice is to reapply every two hours.
How Do Antioxidants Help?
Antioxidants are also helpful in protecting your skin from sun damage because they reduce your skin’s inflammation due to coming into contact with sunlight. The reduced level of inflammation means that your skin is better able to repair itself in the face of intense UV rays.
So, how can antioxidants be added to your daily routine? The ingredients under the umbrella term antioxidant include vitamin C, vitamin E and ferulic acid. While you won’t find a skincare product that says antioxidants on the bottle, you can look for these vitamins in a beneficial blend.
The second ingredient to healthy skin might come as a surprise: antioxidants. The biggest threat to your skin that antioxidants protect you from is free radicals, unstable molecules that damage skin cells.
Are Retinoids Necessary?

Hearing the phrase ‘sexual health’ sends most people to avoiding an unintended pregnancy or preventing Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs). But sexual health is a broader phrase, incorporating a person’s physical and emotional well-being concerning sex and sexuality.
You may be surprised by the range of sex health benefits. Sex can improve your immune system, keep your heart healthy, lower your blood pressure, relieve pain and migraines, lessen your chance of prostate cancer, improve your sleep, relieve stress, boost your cognitive power and self-esteem and extend your lifespan.

well-being, as sex is frequently associated with increased affection. Although sex can be a vital component of a relationship, having sex less frequently does not always imply that your relationship is less enjoyable.
How Important Is a Healthy Sex Life?
Although sex isn't always necessary, it can be a vital element of a happy and healthy relationship. The importance of sexual health varies from person to person. Some people believe that having a sexual relationship with their partner is essential. Others may consider other forms of intimacy and connection to be more valuable.
According to science, everyday sex can bring wonders to your health and well-being. Sex is an excellent way to maintain a healthy balance of estrogen and testosterone. Sex and Mental Health
Sex brings numerous benefits to one's mental health, as it can help you think more clearly. According to research published in the Archives of Sexual Behaviour, regular sex may also help women's memory. Women with penetrative intercourse had higher memory recognition, according to the results of a word-memory challenge. This benefit stems from how sex stimulates the hippocampus, a brain region involved in learning and memory.
Sex and Heart Disease
If you and your partner frequently engage in sex, know that it will give you a stronger immune system. IgA is an antibody that plays a fundamental role in preventing illnesses. If you have regular intercourse (one to two times per week), you will have higher IgA in your saliva. This discovery is based on a study of immunity in people in romantic
The benefits of sex extend to cardiovascular function, as well. Physical activities that strengthen the heart are beneficial to your health, and you should exercise three to five times per week to keep your heart in good shape. Fortunately, this includes both sex and exercise! Being sexually aroused raises the heart rate, similar to a hard workout, with the number of beats per minute rising during the climax.
Yes, frequent sex can help lower high blood pressure. Sexual activity dilates blood arteries, allowing more oxygen and nutrients to reach all body parts while lowering blood pressure. There have been numerous studies on the relationship between sex and blood pressure, with one of the most important findings being that sexual intercourse lowers systolic blood pressure.
Sexual activity may impact your health and cognitive abilities as you grow older.
Does Having Sex Frequently Reduce the Chances of Prostate Cancer?
Can Frequent Sex Lower Blood Pressure
According to research, although the frequency of sex will decrease as we age, sexually active people aged 50 to 90 have a better memory. They were also less prone to
be lonely and depressed.
It's been suggested that men who ejaculate regularly may be protected from prostate cancer, the most common cancer in men in the U.S. For example, men who ejaculated 21 times or more per month were a third less likely to develop prostate cancer than men who ejaculated four to seven times per month, according to research led by Micheal Leitzmann of the National Cancer Institute.

Sex and a Better Sleep
Sex can improve your self-esteem and help you feel less insecure. Sexual intercourse can promote emotional benefits, such as enhancing self-esteem, in addition to all of the physical benefits of having frequent sex. According to a study published in the Social Psychology and Personality Science journal, college students who engaged in casual sex reported higher levels of happiness and selfesteem than those who did not.
Regular sex improves sleep because orgasms promote the production of the hormone prolactin, which aids in sleep. Aside from prolactin, a cocktail of hormones, including oxytocin, dopamine and an endorphin rush, is released in the brain during intercourse. These hormones work together to improve sleep.

Sexual activity can make you feel healthier and improve your well-being. In addition, regular sex with your partner is one of the best ways to keep your relationship going and alive. So, make love and enjoy it to the fullest!

DISCUSSING A NEW AND IMPROVED ALTERNATIVE TO SEDATION WITH DR. JAMES CLARKSON, MD
But what if you could have your surgery in your doctor's office with only local anesthesia? It would undoubtedly save you significant time and money. But you hesitate because, even if it's pain-free, you don't want to be awake to see that!
Dr. James Clarkson, MD (MBBS, MSc, FRCS (Plast), FRCSC) was the Chief of Plastic Surgery at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Michigan, from 2016 to the end of 2021, specializing in hand surgery. He recently passed on the title to his colleague. He is now focusing his talents on being the Chief Medical Officer and co-founder of Wide Awake Virtual Reality, Inc.
You find yourself in need of minor surgery. Right away, images of a hospital, operating room, fasting before the procedure, being placed under anesthesia, recovery time and a hefty bill flash through your mind.
What if there were something that so distracted you that you stopped worrying about the procedure? Dr. James Clarkson and his team have developed a way to use virtual reality to distract patients from the anxieties associated with being awake during surgery.

"I reconstruct wounds from major injuries—leg, upper limb, body and facial wounds. I also manage hand trauma," Dr. Clarkson said.

Dr. Clarkson published some of his grandfather's work based on the available photographs, data and written records. At that time, this work would be considered beyond the accepted medical care.
"Oneprocedures.patient had a small stroke. Another had a major heart attack. An elderly man developed such bad pneumonia that he nearly died in intensive care," he said.

THE QUESTION OF GENERAL ANESTHESIA

"He advocated for early closure of wounds and pioneered the early removal of burns and application of skin grafting. He looked at how people were doing things and realized it was people copying people. They weren't thinking for themselves. And he thought for himself," Dr. Clarkson explained.
Dr. Clarkson patterned his career after his grandfather, a World War II plastic and hand
"I'vesurgeon.always been inspired by my grandfather. I pretty much do the same work that he did. I have these pictures of injured soldiers from 1943 and the amazing reconstructive work that he did," Dr. Clarkson shared.
INSPIRATION FROM FAMILY TRADITION
Dr. Clarkson inherited his grandfather's forwardthinking and willingness to question the status quo. So, when faced with a string of complications that seemed to be centered around general anesthesia, Dr. Clarkson first started questioning. Then, he started innovating.
A PROBLEM REVEALED
Over the years, some of Dr. Clarkson's patients encountered serious complications after minor
Dr. Clarkson concluded that the unnecessary use of general anesthesia contributed to these complications. Yet when he spoke to others, it was
But Dr. Clarkson finds that patients often have no desire to be awake, even for minor surgery. The fear of surgery is a significant fear to overcome, and Dr. Clarkson realized that the solution is not in a haze of "Whatunconsciousness.theyneedis something we haven't been using—a form of distraction," he explained.
"We were playing with a virtual reality headset, surrounded by visual and audio sensations. I was entranced by it. Then, it occurred to me that this
From an idea inspired by his children, Dr. Clarkson pioneered the use of virtual reality for his patients.
"That inspired me to make a simple observation that nobody wanted to make—we're overusing general anesthesia," he explained. "It's not that it should never be done. But it should only be done judiciously and when it's necessary with the minimum required intervention. General anesthesia isn't always required."
A VIRTUAL REALITY SOLUTION
A LOCAL ALTERNATIVE
considered business as usual.
ABOUT GENERAL ANESTHESIA
General anesthesia is a combination of medication and gas that render patients unconscious. For most patients, it is a safe, effective method of avoiding pain. Yet, as with any medical procedure, there are associated side effects and risks, such as nausea and vomiting, confusion and dizziness and muscle aches. In addition, it can be hazardous for patients with conditions such as diabetes, sleep apnea and heart disease. As the population grows older and more frail, these risks, in addition to post operative confusion, are set to grow.
While general anesthesia is a must for major surgery, the profession is interested in moving minor surgery to the doctor's office and using local anesthesia only.
He found a solution outside of traditional medicine.

With intellectual property developed by partners David Wheeler and Joseph Gough, Dr. Clarkson founded Wide Awake Virtual Reality, Inc. and developed a VR device. Patients are immersed in original content and kept anxiety-free while undergoing minor surgery with local anesthesia in the doctor's office.
"The object," Dr. Clarkson said, "isn't to create a med itative experience. Instead, we want to engage the mind, where our patients are intensely interested in what they're looking at."
Dr. Clarkson conducted a study on VR instead of general anesthesia, and the results point toward an improved patient experience. VR patients reported lower anxiety and described the experience as fun. In addition, the procedure conducted with local anesthesia decreased costs and shortened the hospital stay. Patients are more likely to choose this safer, more accessible procedure when their anxiety is eliminated.
"Content includes visually stunning, beautiful documentaries and fascinating material that fills your mind with activity. There's lots going on. It's stuff that patients have never seen before," Dr. Clarkson explained.
Virtual reality has become valuable beyond gaming in the past few years, with applications in entertain ment, space exploration, museums, manufacturing, education, law, mental health, shopping and the mil itary. In addition, it has helped advance diagnosis, treatment, education and surgery in healthcare as a profound distraction.

Dr. Clarkson has followed his grandfather's path of medical innovation and created a way to keep patients safe and happy.

Of Dr. Clarkson's hand surgeries, he performs about 60% in his office with a local anesthetic and a VR
"I'm very pleased with the results," Dr. Clarkson said. "A day's surgery is now just a little visit to the office. They have breakfast, and they can drive home after the surgery. And there's absolutely no risk from anesthesia."
THE SUCCESS OF THE SOLUTION
"VRheadset.makes their surgical experience a neutral or even pleasurable experience," he said. "We even give them post-operative educational information directly into the headset."
"Remember, it's always safer to be awake," he said.

In 2018, Dr. Huss founded Restored Smiles, a continuing dental education company that enhances dentists' skills and knowledge regarding dental implant surgery. The program combines online, lecture and hands on, as well as LIVE surgical experience where professionals can expand their expertise and practices.
"A lot of the focus within my practice has been heavy on the surgical side—implants, extractions and grafting. Then four years ago, I started teaching, and I loved it. It was super rewarding to help improve doctors and their careers and get them passionate about something I was so passionate about," Dr. Huss shared.

"As a kid, I wanted to be a doctor like my dad, who was an OBGYN. But I didn't like the idea of constantly being on call, working at 3:00 a.m., and the whole hospital scene," Dr. Huss explained. He considered business and finance but eventually changed his mind.

Helping Mom
Dr. Huss' most important patient was his own mother.
They had to extract all three teeth and she did not have a lot of bone to work with. So, they had to do a ridge augmentation and build a lot of bone.
"We had to rebuild everything and cross our fingers that she'd heal well. And she did! Six months later, we took a 3D X-ray that showed great bone growth. We placed three implants and a few crowns restoring her entire smile," he shared.
Dr. Huss was grateful to be in a position to be able to help his mother when she needed it.

"We teach doctors that have never placed implants how to do it or doctors that have placed 20, 50, or hundreds of implants and want to improve. We have online courses and in person lectures with a lot of hands-on exercises. There's also a LIVE surgical course where my company partners with a company in Guadalajara, Mexico, and we do LIVE surgeries there," Dr. Huss explained.
"Being an outstanding mentor has a lot to do with teaching the right way. The biggest thing I have to do is to make sure that the doctors I teach feel confident. If they don't, whatever I teach will not stick. So being a good motivator while teaching will help build their confidence," he explained.
"He wrote an unbelievable letter. It said, 'Doc, you changed my life. My smiles are attracting women left and right now, and I'm having to keep them away with a stick. The other way you changed my life is you restored my confidence in doctors. The last time I gave someone control over me, I ended up paralyzed and mentally broken. You changed that, and I'm forever grateful,'" Dr. Huss shared.
In addition to being an instructor, Dr. Huss also considers himself a motivational speaker.
"He had severe periodontal disease. It wasn't drugs, just really bad genes and a lot of neglect. He had a huge open bite, and the teeth were just floating in the wind. So, it took me less than two minutes to extract all of the upper teeth. That's how ready those teeth were to be removed," he shared.
A Parting Reminder
"Weevidence.helped get him healthier. We took care of his gums, did some extractions and gave him some partial dentures at no cost. And he was ecstatic. He had an awesome smile and received so many compliments on it," he said.
Restoring Confidence
One patient had had horrible experiences with doctors in the past. He had been paralyzed and told he'd never walk again. Fortunately, he proved them wrong, but he was left with a bad case of anxiety when faced with the medical profession. Dr. Huss helped him work past that as they repaired his teeth.
Throughout his career, Dr. Huss has experienced several outstanding cases that have touched his heart and taught him valuable lessons no one taught him in school.
"My mom was on a walk with my sister, and she fell. The real impact was on her three front teeth," he said.
