There are literally hundreds of magazines targeted at women and girls, most of which focus on body issues such as how to lose weight in less than ten days, how to do their hair in the latest styles, how to wear their makeup, get the latest look, and how to be just like their favorite celebrity. With covers that routinely Photoshop their already gorgeous models to give them longer necks, slimmer thighs, and narrower waists, females of all ages are bombarded with superficial images of what someone with a photographers loop and contact sheets believe is an ideal woman that all women should then look like. And, while this unrealistic view of women has existed for many years, many everyday women and celebrities are taking a stand against this objectification of their persons with events like teen singer, Lorde, posting an un-retouched photo of herself in concert in retaliation to a photograph an online magazine posted of her that had deleted her acne and eye circles and many stars are taking to Twitter with makeup free selfies to show themselves in their natural states so that we can all see that they are, in fact, “just like us.”

24

WANT A BATHING-SUIT-BODY IN HOURS?!

But the damage of nearly 244 years from when the first women’s magazine, The Lady’s Magazine, which contained literary columns, fashion content, and embroidery designs, was published in 1770 has been done. Now the clash between articles, advertisements, and photos creates a smorgasbord of visuals that especially young girls find deeply impacting to their sense of self and adversely affect their relationships with their peers, parents, food, and themselves. A recent study conducted by The Center on Media and Child Health based out of the Children’s Hospital in Boston state that “70% of teen girls agreed that magazines strongly influenced (emphasis mine) what they thought was the ideal body type.” So when they see all of these pictures of svelte models who may or may not even look like that themselves in real life and then compare their own budding bodies to these images, they often become unhappy and dissatisfied which can lead them to depression, anxiety, and even eating disorders. Even when they see themselves lose the baby fat is generally

normal for them to lose once they reach puberty, Amanda von Schlegel notes in her article How Media Affects the Self Esteem and Body Image of Young Girls that “they lose sight of the healthy reasons for their weight loss, evolving it into reasons portrayed by the media of the self-image.” Even as far back as fifteen years ago many studies were conducted and they all found that body image was a major issue for girls getting ready to go through puberty with 20% of 9-year olds and over 40% of 14-year olds wanting to lose weight. The correlation between this skewed sense of self and disordered eating and dieting cannot be ignored with research showing that approximately twothirds of all adolescent and young adult female have dieted at some point (Serdar). Kasey Serdar in her article Female Body Image and the Mass Media: Perspective on How Women Internalize the Ideal Beauty Standard also points out that the magazines marketed toward women tout how they might “better themselves” by “providing information and products that are supposed to make them look and feel better. Women read these magazines with the hope

that if they follow the advice given, they will be more acceptable and attractive.” These magazines fail, however, to encourage a young girl to simply feel good about who she is already and Serdar goes on to quote a study that demonstrates that “women who read fashion magazines displayed higher levels of thin-ideal internalization, which is a powerful risk factor for development of weight anxiety and disordered eating patterns. In additions to weight dissatisfaction and eating pathology, studies have shown that women who view slides of women picture in many mainstream magazines and advertisements show increased levels of depression, stress, guilt, shame and insecurity.” So, how do we change the world? Women need to stop objectifying ourselves. It’s true. We are, in fact, our own worst enemy. We need to be able to look at our bodies in the mirror and love the stretch marks for the indicators of valor that they are. We are meant to be soft and curvy, lean and narrow, and everything in between. We are blonde, brunette, redheads, short, medium, and tall. Some of us like to wear lots of eyeliner with bold lipstick, some are more au natural. And there is nothing wrong with any of that! We need to teach our daughters that there is also a time and a place for just about anything as long as they are respecting themselves and their bodies. A time when holey jeans and t-shirts are just fine, but also when dressing up or looking professional is more appropriate. And to always do it with their own personal touch. That they need to be proud of who they are because they are smart, independent, beautiful women who are uniquely themselves and they shouldn’t want to be exactly like anyone else. When we as mothers and mentors are influencing them more than the media, then the media will have to start to sit up and take notice of what we are saying. Which brings me to magazines like Fashion Affair. For all of the beautiful and amazing art that you see within

these pages, the editors and writers do encourage all participants to keep things as natural as possible. Of course there is a time and a place for Photoshop; no one wants to have 6 million people see the zit they developed that morning on the tip of their nose, but really would that be the worst thing in the world to happen? Of course not.

Then go buy a damn suit and put it on your body...

TODAY! - B y J e n i Te t a m o r e

But we love all body types, the lusher the better in our view, and believe in keeping it as real as possible. Not every magazine feels that way, but we’re starting to notice the trends on TV and in advertisements of showing more people that look like people, not mannequins. Flesh and blood beats plastic every time in my book.

Fashion Psychology is the study of color and style and its effects on human behavior while addressing cultural sensitivity and cultural norms. As the Founder of the field of Fashion Psychology, it is my goal that it is a declared a major at the top universities in the United States and around the world. I am currently touring the Middle East, Asia, and Europe to expand the field of Fashion Psychology to the Fashion Capitals. After doing TV, magazine, and online interviews about the field, I have received positive and negative feedback. The positive feedback from my audience wants to recognize Fashion Psychology as a reputable field. The negative feedback believes that Fashion Psychology is too trivial to be a field. In response to both positive and negative feedback, the history of the psychology field should be highlighted. The psychology field was founded in the late 1800’s. It has now evolved to include Abnormal Psychology, Behavioral Psychology, Biopsychology, Cognitive Psychology, Color Psychology, Comparative Psychology, Cross-Cultural Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Educational Psychology, Experimental Psychology, Forensic Psychology, Health Psychology, Para Psychology, Personality Psychology, Positive Psychology, Social Psychology, Sports Psychology and the list goes on. Fashion is ubiquitous. Surely in the early 21st century there is a place for Fashion Psychology amongst the many branches of psychology. The Fashion Psychology Success lecture series will begin in NYC at the University of Fashion, founded by the former chairperson of the famed NYC’s Fashion Institute of Technology, Francesca Sterlacci. To schedule a lecture series please contact Dawnn Karen M.A., B.A. at info@ fashionpsychologysuccess.com. Dawnn Karen, M.A., B.A. is the Founder of the Fashion Psychology field from Columbia University. She is based in NYC servicing clients worldwide.

FASHION & beauty with Alicia R. Camlibel, Ph.D., LPC, Psychotherapist

reflection on dads Inspired by My Father and Husband

I grew up in a small town in New Jersey. In fact, I live with my family in the adjacent town and we seem to spend a good amount of time where I grew up. Every time we pass through or stop for a bite to eat, I find myself telling my children the stories of my youth, such as how my father would take me to the town’s annual Memorial Day parade, walk with me to the end of the parade, make sure I got safely on top of the fire trucks, which took all the town’s children to the local meeting spot for lemonade and hot dogs, and somehow run quickly down the street to meet me at the picnic spot so I wouldn’t be alone. He also used to take me to the local lake in town each night in the summer after work, where we would swim until dinner time, and during the fireworks at the 4th of July, mimic the

boom when the fireworks exploded in the sky and then whistle as we watched them glow and slowly disappear. He did this to distract me from the loud noises they would make as they exploded so I could enjoy the show. Each time I tell my children one of these stories, my oldest daughter, Kathleen, usually comments to me, “You were lucky, you had a great Daddy, just like us.” She always makes me smile and say, “Yes, we are all very lucky to have such great Dads, aren’t we?”

“The involvement of a father in a child’s life is the defining factor that makes him a dad.”

I am reminded at these moments that, although my Dad passed away over 4 years ago, it was his positive presence in my life, through the time he spent and the lessons he taught, that made him a great Dad. As I watch my husband create memories through his actions and the stories he tells our children, such as bringing the blanket for the kids to sit on at the picnic, dancing with

inner fashion & beauty

them as the music plays, watching their various sporting events, dance recitals, practice spelling words, teaching them math, and carrying the umbrella over their heads in the rain, I am so grateful that my children will get the same positive experience that I did with my Dad. I realize it is in his taking time to do things with them and be with them, letting them know they are loved no matter what, and they can do anything their heart desires with hard work and determination that allow him to be a part of them and them a part of him. The deeds dads do for the children range from financially supporting them, to running alongside of them as they ride their bike for the first time without training wheels, to sleeping next to them in the bed when they have the 101 degree fever, to picking them up at midnight when they are upset at a friend’s house. The involvement of a father in a child’s life is the defining factor that makes him a dad. I also realized how lucky I was to have grown up with a dad such as these and to raise a family with a man such as this. From carrying the four bags full of towels and toys to the pool, to giving the kids rides on his back in the pool, to wrapping up our littlest in a blanket and giving her a bottle, I had flashbacks of when my dad used to do those things in my youth. From getting on the tea cup ride with our youngest for her first carnival ride to shooting baskets to win our daughter a teddy bear, I thought of my dad. From packing the car at the end of a long night, to carrying home the three fishes the children won, and subsequently spending three hours to set up the fish tank where they now live, I thought of my dad. As my own husband did all of these things with our children, I thought of my dad. It made me realize something that not all of us have dads in our lives who meet this criteria. For many reasons there are many fathers out there who have biologically contributed to life, but have chosen or

cannot be involved with their children. Whether it be the grandparent who starts over and raises the children or the mother who pulls double duty, in today’s society, for many reasons, there are people who physically and emotionally contribute to a child’s life as a dad and sometimes even a mom. So to all the people out there who give to a child and help make their lives better, I salute you! To all the men who are active, supportive, and involved, in your childcare’s life, I commend you. Marine Safari Collection Patrick T Cooper Resort Collection (PTCRC), a luxury swimwear brand comprised of carefully crafted cuts designed to flatter and accentuate the female silhouette, today announced the release of its newest swimwear line, the Marine Safari Collection. This season’s collection was inspired by a carefree, chic beach lifestyle and underwater safari journey, which is conveyed through a lively aquamarine color palette and a variety of one- and two-piece swimwear cuts, scarf wraps and kaftans. The line is comprised of exclusive looks, and available in select stores and online, effective immediately. “This season’s Marine Safari Collection is a continuation of classic designs that reinforce PTCRC’s focus on form and fit,” stated Patrick T Cooper, co-founder and designer of PTCRC. “This line also debuts the addition of three new, exciting suits to our collection: a trikini, a monokini and a classic halter one-piece.” The additional swimwear pieces rounds-out the brand’s offerings while providing customers with the same high-quality craftsmanship, fabrics, designs and attention to detail that Patrick T Cooper’s clientele have come to expect. Much like the women who adorn PTCRC, the designs exude a touch of silent elegance and classic glamour, encouraging women to feel sexy and confident.

S Some days are better than others, but we know when to work together and when to just be a couple. Our family is strong and the strength was needed in order to succeed.”

ome designers are made, while others are simply born into their world and raised in an environment that nurtures their creative spirits until they are ready to strike out on their own to become a shoe design powerhouse couple of fairytale proportions. Donald Pliner was born with a ‘slipper’ spoon in his mouth as the son of shoe designers based in Chicago, IL where he eventually apprenticed with his brother to their father in the family owned Pliner’s Florsheim Family Shoe Store. Lisa also came from a designing family as the daughter of Judith Barbernell, who encouraged her daughter to pursue and an education and career in the arts. It was while Lisa was working for Versace that she and Donald would meet on a blind date and Donald wooed her away to work for him instead only to eventually woo her into marrying him as well! With the pitfalls that can come with marriage and business, it seemed absolutely necessary to ask this designing duo what the best part of working together was, but also how they balanced work and family life. Lisa replied, “I bring the feminine touch and my green eyes for our signature green soles while Donald brings his years of experience of being

a retailer. We have two very different perspectives from the female and male points of view and for the love of what we do, it works. Some days are better than others, but we know when to work together and when to just be a couple. Our family is strong and the strength was needed in order to succeed.” Balance, comfort, and creativity seem to be the watchwords for the Pliner’s throughout their careers and marriage. Little is left to chance and almost anything, when closely examined on a pair of their shoes, could have some significance to them personally to the green soles being almost the exact same shade of Lisa’s eyes, to the signature skull and crossbones representing the death of their child as an infant and their use them for the communication for peace, to the date stitched on the side of a pair of shoes being the birthday of their adopted daughter, Starr, who also inspired them to launch their foundation Peace for the Children.

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF

I am a model and beauty queen from England, I have appeared in three international magazine covers: ‘Nossa Magazine’ (BRAZIL) ‘SU Magazine’ (FLORIDA) and of course ‘Fashion Affair Magazine’ (GLOBAL). I have been modeling for Celebrity designer Pia Michi for the last three years and have walked the runway of London Fashion Week for Nova Chiu, where I appeared in VOGUE UK.

PLEASE SHARE WITH US WHAT IT’S LIKE BEING A MISS UNIVERSE GREAT BRITAIN 2014 FINALIST. The Miss Universe GB competition is organised by Vibe, where around 50 contestants from England, Wales and Scotland compete for the coveted title. This is an amazing pageant to be apart off, and I feel so lucky and honoured to have made it into the finals. A lot of work and effort has to be put into the competition, but I am working extremely hard and believe that hard work pays off.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ROUND IN THECOMPETITION?

I love all of the rounds and everything about the competion itself, however I am super excited for the evening wear round, I have designed my own dress and it is being created in Brazil so hopefully it will be a winning dress! Fingers Crossed.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER ASPIRING MODELS AND BEAUTY QUEENS?

Simply, BE YOURSELF! You are your biggest competition, so there is no point in trying to be anything other than yourself.

WHAT ARE YOUR OTHER INTERESTS BESIDES MODELING?

I have started blogging and also making fashion and makeup youtube videos. From being involved with the fashion industry I have learned a few bits and tricks, in which I wanted to share with the lovely girlies out there, it is just as a hobby of which I enjoy.

HISTORY OF BLUE Blue is relative newcomer on the world stage of color when compared to red, black, brown, and ochre. It wasn’t used in cave drawings or dyes until long after the other colors were well established in societies, mostly due to the extreme difficulty to getting a true blue tone from any methods of plants or minerals that were available to people during ancient times. Blue dyes were produced from plants such as woad (using a pretty disgusting process of soaking it in a drunken man’s urine for three to seven days in order to get it turn to blue) in Europe and indigo in Asia and Africa whereas blue pigments were created using minerals such as lapis lazuli or azurite. While blue had some religious significance to the ancient Muslims in that Christians and Jews were not allowed to wear white or green, so they would wear blue instead, blue did not have any true significance nor did it become a color associated with luxury until King Louis IX of France (1214-1270 AD) dressed regularly in blue. Soon blue became the color associated with the King, the nobility, and the wealthy and powerful of Europe. It got to be that only special guilds could do the dying of blue and anyone else who tried faced severe penalties. Queen Elizabeth of England (1558-1603 AD) went so far as to enact Sumptuary Laws that forbade anyone without noble blood from wearing blue! It was during the 17th century that the first army was outfitted in blue uniforms. The German ruler, Frederick William, Elector of Brandenburg, was actually trying to protect their pastel dye industry against competition from imported indigo dye. Eventually the British and United States navies switched over to blue uniforms in the mid-18th century, while the French elite regiment, the Gardes Francaises, which protected King Louis XVI,

- by Jeni Tetamore

wore blue uniforms with red trim. Blue eventually became the color of liberty and revolution in the 18th century, but the color of authority in the 19th and 20th when more policemen and government officials were clothed in it. Additionally, the blue suit, came back court fashion in the 17th century. It was King Charles II of England who ordered his courtiers to wear simple coats, waistcoats, and breeches following the London plague of 1665 and fire of 1666 and the palette of colors became blue, grey, white, and buff. This style would become globally imitated with George Beau Brummel, a courtier in the early 19th century during the Regency of the future King George IV, when he created a suit closely fitted to the human form with a long tail coat cut to fit the body and long tight trousers to replace the knee-length breeches and stockings of the previous century. In order to accentuate people’s attention on the body and not the clothes, he chose plain colors like blue and grey. Since the style was quickly adopted by the Prince Regent, it wasn’t long before all the men were dressed in snug blue suits throughout Europe and the world. With blue being seeing as a color that was both authoritative but nonthreatening, a serious color that public opinion showed that people preferred to see their leaders in, it is easy to understand why such standbys as the blue pinstripe remains a staple in men’s closets to this day. It was President John F. Kennedy who popularized the less formal, two-button business suit still preferred in many business circles today. And let’s not forget jeans, invented by Levi Strauss in 1873 and using denim fabric and colored with indigo dye, which can be found clothing newborns to centurions around the world and back again with the most popular color of jeans remaining some tone of –what else? – BLUE!

LAPIS LAZULI Lapis lazuli is a semi-precious stone found primarily in the Middle East and has been actively mined in Afghanistan for more than six thousand years. During ancient times it was exported all over the world to make jewelry and vessels and, in Egypt, was used to create the eyebrows for the funeral mask of King Tutankhamun (1341-1323 BCE). Ancient Egyptians considered blue a beneficial color in that it would protect the dead against evil in the afterlife and was associated with the sky and divinity, hence the reason why they eventually found a way to create the first synthetic blue pigment made from grinding silica, lime, copper, and alkali together because lapis lazuli was so expensive to import.

The throat chakra, or blue chakra, is most often associated with self-expression, creativity, and the search for truth and is directly related to the thyroid gland, upper lungs, and respiratory system. Blue is the representation of inspirations, devotion, infinity, and religious goals, producing calm and peace, with the throat chakra’s focus being on the spoken word and the expression of feelings through communication. It is the throat chakra that allows us to communicate thoughts and feelings and is connected directly to our expression of inner creativity and our abilities to express the same. If you are having trouble with • Expressing yourself • Learning • Habitual lying • Fear, doubt, or uncertainty then it is likely that your throat chakra is out of balance.

FENG SHUI

As a water element, blue is the color of clarity, inspiration, relaxation, renewal, and nobility so it is best used in places where you want to utilize skills/knowledge, career/journey, and the abundance/prosperity areas of the feng shui bagua. However, if used too much or in the wrong tones it can be melancholy, lonely, frightening, depressing, and cold so use in rooms that are naturally warm like bathroom or rooms that receive plenty of natural light.

irst we made plans for dinner at the The Princeton Club located in the Lodge. After enjoying a pleasant and affordable meal, we set out for the hot springs. There were 3 different pools ranging from hot to mildly so. As we lay watching the stars in the crystal clear skies, all of the stress and troubles of life and work seemed to melt away. After a couple hours, we left the pool to get changed in the locker rooms. The Spa was a thing of beauty and the locker rooms were among the nicest I’ve seen. We showered, dressed and were ready to head back to our cabin. We were so relaxed that lying down in the bed was not far behind our arrival. We rested the night away in our comfortable beds. Our cabin could have easily slept up to 10 people, but we were content and happy to spend the night to ourselves. We awakened the next morning feeling refreshed and ready to enjoy the day.

At the age of 19, I made a very passive attempt at following one of my dreams of becoming a model and actress but after a few “No’s” and other obstacles, such as my height, location and finances, I was discouraged so I gave up. I decided to put those dreams away because I felt like I wasn’t good enough. I also had a big fear of failing and I thought it was just too hard. Ten year later, I found myself married to my best friend, the proud mother of one handsome little boy and beautiful little girl with a “good” full-time job, a home and security, however something was missing. I wasn’t happy. At the time, I began getting depressed and feeling down and couldn’t figure out why. I just couldn’t shake the feeling of my life was supposed to be more fulfilling. I was unhappy and it had nothing to do with my husband or my kids. I found myself thinking and researching about modeling and acting again. Oprah, YouTube and Google Search became my source of information and guidance. One day, I was at the hair salon and as my stylist began to wash my hair she asked me had I ever modeled before. Shocked by the timing of the question, I told her, actually I have and in turn she then asked if I would participate in a photoshoot and model for her hair 132

extension line. I was thrilled and nervous at the same time. Of course my answer was yes which lead to my first real photo-shoot. Shortly after the shoot, my estranged best friend contacted me out of the blue. We had a long talk about life and reminisced about the past. She then told me I was talented and she never expect me to stay at my job for as long as I did. She figured I would be off living my dreams somewhere else. Having this conversation was exactly what I needed to hear. It sparked a fire in me. Because I am a firm believer in destiny and timing, these two encounters were a clear sign I was on the right path. Plus there was nothing else I ever wanted to do. I allowed so many things and so many excuses to get in my way over the years. I decided then to fully stand on my faith and not allow my fears to hinder me from following my dreams. It was a new day!

ne would think that as the founder of a fashion academy which has the pleasure of hosting more than 200 students at any given time and grooming the next generation of Egyptian designers, that my own aspirations were fully realized. After all, I’ve been in the field of fashion education forever; that should be enough. Except that it wasn’t and I had to become, in essence, one of my own students. My Italian fashion spirit lay dormant deep inside of me, yet never died, rather it emerged with all its strength and power. That’s when I decided to launch my own couture line. As an incredibly busy woman charged with owning a school, managing event organizers, a lecturer, a wife, and recently a mother, I am under tremendous pressure to perform on every level. However, this same pressure also lends a greater understanding to the many facets of ‘woman’, her sensuality and warmth, her strength and passion and inspires me to try and capture this richly defined sense of style in every piece I create. Perhaps it is my Sicilian roots, but my ambition is to capture the innate, evanescent sex appeal present in every woman in my designs. Each design is unique, indeed I never present the same style twice. My production is exclusively handmade so that each dress has its own character. In fact, it could take a whole month for a dress to be draped, embroidered, and completed. I adore working with corsetry, in truth my new collection is inspired by historical corsets and finishing, but always with a special touch, a modern textile, treated and transformed by handwork or special finishing techniques. The primary materials I work with are hard silk tulle, lace, organza, and chiffon while utilizing cut lines and special embroideries to create style with an edge, to create the uniqueness that modern women desire.

Inspiration comes from the endlessly burned, dry field of my land, the fire from the volcano that dominates my island. The passion is mixture of cultures which links Arabs, Spaniards, and northern European bloods and blooms in the uniqueness of a style that is old and, at the same time, very new.

Hitting All Notes Your Summer Dalliances Don’t take this personally, take this professionally. A fine dapper gent will land that next promotion, bank on that. Men nationwide are getting back to their roots, thanks to the brand’s boar and badger bristle shave brushes, pure, kettle processed shave soaps, ceramic shave bowls, post-shave balm and lotion, scrubs, and more. However, van der Hagen Enterprises’ backto-basics, retro inspired shave products are not for quirks, but for functionality.

Grooming tools rarely come with an emotion attached. The Nostalgic days of watching dad shave when you were younger may challenge that theory. Van der Hagen pays perfect homage to that beauty mark of yesteryear--but modernized and much sleeker for the modern man. What better way is there to celebrate him on Father’s Day? Do you see a spruced up male in the mirror? A cushioned shave and a cushioned life is our gift to you at Fashion Affair.

Add a wedge of lemon and a smart solution for everything and you have the perfect business cocktail, also known as Bizzy Fizz. We stumbled upon the creative team here before, and had to do a double-take when we heard they had expanded their luxurious collection for the male counterpart. Bizzy Fizz is a family owned and operated company out of Michigan. It was started by the brilliant mind of a six year old boy, many years wise for his age. Skylar had a love for bath fizzies, which sparked a Technicolor career in high quality natural bath and body products; all of course only after he gets his homework and chores done.

Grand ideas often are born out of pure frustration. Nicole Oden was tired of waiting for the deed to be done. A desire to find a quality skincare line that would do everything it promised birthed her latest passion project. Nutrient-rich sea botanicals was the missing link for those that desired a “newborn out of the nest” look. Lucky for you, Nicole connected the dots. Imagine the benefits of seaweed extracts, green tea extracts, 17 amino acids, and 4 powerful anti-oxidants: all compounded into a thoughtful facial regime. The collection works harmoniously with itself and it’s highly suggested you do exactly just that.

It’s that strong and protective attitude that gave birth to the spirit and devotion of Sofi & Liv. To say that we fought in the editorial office over this collection would be an understatement. We do get scrappy over things we love.
