F
rom the moment Christine Browne tasted her first Nothing Bundt Cakes, she couldn’t get it off her mind. That first taste was in 2015 while visiting a friend in Nashville. She returned home to Louisville and looked for a Kentucky location. When she realized there wasn’t one, she felt something calling her. With a background in restaurants, she liked the appeal of being a franchise owner. “You don’t have to reinvent the wheel. The team provides fantastic support and makes it much easier to step into the business,” Christine says. The St. Matthews location, opened by Christine in 2016, became the first in Kentucky, with a Lexington location opening shortly after that. With the St. Matthews location hitting its capacity, Christine knew it was time to open another location. The Middletown bakery opened in October with a grand opening event providing 20% of sales to A Recipe to End Hunger. Even after four years since she took her first bite, Christine is fueled by the customers. “The reactions you get from people when they first try the cake! They are so happy and I get tickled. Being able to start a business that brings joy to people is a feeling that is hard to explain.”
With 10 flavors and 40 unique cake designs, there is plenty to choose from, including their seasonal flavor, Snickerdoodle, which will be available this December and January. You may be surprised to know that Nothing Bundt Cake locations offer retail spaces that provide everything you need to throw a party, along with great gift options including plates, platters, and mugs. Christine suggests these as gift items for birthdays, realtors’ closings, teachers, or any event worth celebrating. Design a personalized gift by

choosing a decorative plate with the cake of your choice. The staff will caringly package the items to help make them the perfect gift. Christine is pleased the Louisville community has responded like she did four years ago, and attributes much of that success to the help provided by her three daughters and husband (who have full-time careers, but help when they can), and the staff that have grown to feel like family. Christine explains, “We provide an experience, we go beyond just selling cake.” When Christine looks ahead to what’s next, another location can certainly be in the
cards. “We are always listening to what our customers have to say, and looking at where we could go next.”

O
n Saturday, Nov. 2, a crowd of over 200 people got to watch a special fashion show at Dillard’s in the Mall St. Matthews, the Betsey Johnson Meet ‘n Greet. Fashion designer Betsey Johnson was in Louisville for a funfilled, joy-packed, enthusiastic and exuberant meet ‘n greet featuring apparel and accessories with colors, hearts, animal prints, sparkle and bling. The 90-minute event took six weeks to coordinate, which was fine with Christine Lund because she enjoyed the planning process down to the last detail. Christine is the area sales manager in handbags and accessories at Dillard’s. “Our corporate office reached out and said, ‘Surprise! Betsey is making a personal appearance.’ We thought they were kidding,” Christine said. She and her team sprang into action in September, working with Betsey’s team in New York and California. They created the Betsey Shop and an entire setup on the first floor of Dillard’s, constructing a stage for the fashion show and transforming the bridal room into a backstage green room. They contacted Heyman Talent Louisville for two models, designed a special area for the meet ‘n greet and photos, secured 80 stanchions with velvet ropes, and made sure fun was the foundation of every decision. Melissa Dietrich, visual merchandiser at Dillard’s, painted some special art for Betsey that hung in
the green room. The designer herself lit up with joy when she saw the paintings.

Four members of Betsey Johnson’s team came out to the store the day before to see the setup. They told Christine it was perfect, one of the first times they had never had to change anything.
“She was lovely, so down to earth,” Christine said. “She loves to talk and will keep the ball rolling from one conversation to the next. She's so enthusiastic about everything.” Christine got to hear about Betsey’s home, a pink trailer with flowers on the patio, in the $1.9 million trailer park she created in Malibu, California.

The 77-year-old fashion icon beat breast cancer 20 years ago and had open heart surgery in April. She is happy to be living life and was delighted to be in Louisville in November, sharing her love of fashion and fun with her Betsey Johnson merchandise for customers at Dillard’s. Those with a pre-purchased VIP pass got to have their picture made with Betsey on a comfy white couch. “She is a hugger for sure,” Christine said. Everyone who attended the Betsey Johnson Meet ‘n Greet got free smiles and a little reminder to enjoy the day and live life to the fullest.

t a young age, very few people have decided what their career will be for the rest of their lives. Leslie Lewis-Sheets of LL&A Interior Design is one of those few. At the age of 14, after observing an interior designer working on her family’s home, her decision was sealed.
through a process called “right sizing”. This is the act of determining the right size home to fit your current situation – whether that’s downsizing or up sizing. This happens as couples go through one life transition to the next. Leslie and her team help couples and families feel comfortable in their surroundings.
“I thought, if I can do that as a career, that’s what I want to do. I still love it as much as I did then. Every day is different, and it’s all I’ve ever known,” says Leslie. Started in 2004, the business was once Leslie Lewis Designs and has now morphed into LL&A Interior Design. Tammy Randall joined Leslie 13 years ago and became a partner in the business in 2016. Together they lead a team of degreed professional designers. Given that design has gone mainstream, the industry has become crowded. Home improvement stores no longer offer only building supplies, but also carry home décor options. Celebrities have developed lines with rugs, bedding, and wall decorations. There are TV channels dedicated to showing how “quick and easy” it is to transform a space. There are websites providing inspiration based on just a keyword. But LL&A Interior Design cuts through all this clutter and gets the job done. Leslie explains, “From concept to hanging the artwork on the walls, we are capable of doing it all. We are as much, or as little, help you need.” Their interior design services are not limited to just commercial or just residential. LL&A is one of the few design

groups who have earned respect in being well-versed in both aspects of design. Leslie shares that this ability sets them apart from other firms, but also sets them up for the next wave of design trends. “There is an emphasis on this ‘resimercial’ emergence. Because we are now all working on our laptops and cell phone, we are mobile. Therefore, office interiors are becoming much less formal and more collaborative. Offices, restaurants, lobbies, and gathering spaces are taking a residential spin and are becoming much more welcoming with a focus on hospitality. You will see lots of texture and comforts you would find in a home,” Leslie shares. As businesses compete for talent and customers Leslie says your office space is something not to overlook. You want to make sure the business reflects your brand. She calls office space your “walk-in website”. The same branding as your website should be carried over to your office. LL&A also helps homeowners go
Leslie and team wanted to be able to offer a small part of their services to the public by opening THE SHOP at LL&A. In historic downtown Jeffersonville, THE SHOP opened in March 2019 as a boutique with custom hand-crafted jewelry and handbags, playful gifts, thoughtful mementos, distinctive accessories for home or office, and a variety of artwork, lamps and accent pillows. Looking ahead, LL&A will be expanding into the Florida marketing. “We have roots there and it makes sense. Several of our clients have a second home in Florida, so we are going to start marketing ourselves there,” Leslies closes.

A
serendipitous theme runs through the love story of Kaelyn and Luke Hancock. Several years ago, she was at the Tin Roof celebrating a friend’s birthday. He, too, was celebrating the birthday of one of his friends. Kaelyn, who attended UofL, was well aware of Hancock, a member of the 2013 championship basketball team, but had not met him. “He came up to me and said, ‘I want to take you to dinner.’ We had a great conversation and he seemed really nice. I thought, I’m going for it. We exchanged numbers and the rest is history,” says Kaelyn. “We then met for drinks at a hole in the wall place where we played pool and darts, things we both enjoy. We talked for hours. I beat him at pool, but maybe he was letting me win. I’m just not sure.”

In cahoots with their friends, Luke planned a special night to propose to her. The driveway of their home was strewn with rose petals and lighted with candles. She wasn’t completely surprised by the proposal but was delightedly caught off guard by the timing. Their friends recorded the moment on their phones. Having those memories is very special to the couple. When they were looking for a wedding and reception venue, they visited The Gillespie, but hadn’t decided on a date for the big event. They learned The Gillespie was available October 19 of this year. Nothing could have been more perfect. They were engaged on that date last year. “I had competed in pageants for a long time and had worn some amazing dresses, but I wasn’t sure what I wanted in a wedding dress. I saw some gorgeous dresses but hadn’t felt the connection. Finally, my bridesman, my mom and a few other people were with me when I tried on a beaded lace gown. They all said it was incredible,” says Kaelyn. As much as she loved the gown, she requested design modifications like an
illusion mesh top and sleeves with lace appliques to make it truly her own creation. Kate and Luke envisioned a classic wedding that incorporated touches of their UofL school pride. Shades of red were interspersed for pops of color in whites, ivory and greenery in the ceremony and reception décor. She included calla lilies in her bouquet because they were her grandfather’s favorite flower. The UofL Cardinal Bird mascot made an appearance during the reception and did the famous UofL cheer. Even die-hard UK fans got into the spirit. “Though the couple recited vows back to the officiant, they saved vows they had created for each other until they were alone. “We wanted that to be more of an intimate thing and I didn’t know if I could get through them without sobbing,” says Kaelyn. The reception dinner menu had a Southern influence and was followed later that evening by a late-night nosh. Signature drinks---Tres Jolie, Gin and Josie and My Cousin Vinny---were a tribute to the couple’s two teacup poodles and one pit bull.

“While guests were having cocktails in the mezzanine, Luke and I shared a meal alone. That gave us a chance to take in the entire day. I’m so happy we did that,” remembers Kaelyn. “Our wedding was everything we wanted it to be. Both of our mothers were over the moon. It was awesome and beautiful.”

In the 1800s, the property, which expanded at that time from River Road to Brownsboro Road (it totaled three square miles), was owned by Babs’ great-great grandparents George and Harriet Rogers Gaulbert. George was an entrepreneur and titan of the national readymix paint company Peaslee-Gaulbert Corporation. It was their daughter Carrie Gaulbert Cox and her husband, local businessman Attilla Cox, Jr. that built Malvern House.

ttilla’s father, Attilla Sr. was a business partner of J.P. Morgan in railroads and the founder of Columbia Fidelity Bank, now PNC bank, so he had ties to New York City. The Cox’s knew they wanted a fabulous home, so they contacted NYC architect Ogden Codman, who with Edith Wharton wrote “The Decoration of Houses,” a manual of interior design. He built homes for the Rockefellers in Terrytown, New York and The Breakers for the Vanderbilts in Newport, Rhode Island, so he knew grand homes. The Cox home in Louisville was Codman’s only home that he helped create outside of New England.

he home, now on 15-acres, was made possible by the internationally-acclaimed landscape firm of Frederick Law Olmsted. It was originally three floors with a hunting lodge room located on the third floor along with several bedrooms. Babs’ grandmother tore off the third floor in the 1960s. All of the original limestone block walls, marble staircase and panel rooms of the original designs are still present throughout the home, even after Lee’s family redid the home in 2007. Olmsted’s European marble wellhead from 1614 resides in the formal gardens, stained glass panels from the 14-1500s are embedded throughout the windows on the first floor and a Robert Adam Huntress Diana mantle piece from the 1700s is located in the dining room. The details make this home unique and, Lee says, he wanted to keep the time period of the original home as close as possible, like the tea paper on the walls and Steinway piano and keeping the Sloan and Company of New York wood in the paneled room. Lee insisted on changing the upholstery and furniture and tearing down the screened-in porch and creating a room mimicking the Winfield House in England. Lee also brought their oil paintings made by George Romney and Henry Raeburn (Royal Academy artists), as well as pieces from Anthony van Dyck, Claude Lorraine, Pablo Picasso and more of his extensive art collection. “We have to have certain pieces, but I wanted us to be able to flop down with a drink and enjoy company,” Lee says about his family of five.

or Christmas, Lee is in his element when it comes to design. He’s a real “proponent” of using live greens to keep the traditional Williamsburg decor historically correct. Lee uses boxwoods, fresh holly and garlands and red amaryllis to make arrangements and balls, all locally from St. Matthews Feed & Seed. “The smell is overwhelming,” he says. “At Christmastime, there’s nothing better than green with a pop of red.” For the tree, Lee ornaments the lavish timber with hand-blown Christopher Radko accessories. “I get a little carried away with it,” Lee laughs. He loves to entertain for Christmas Eve dinner, as he fills the first floor of his home with guests to

enjoy the many fireplaces and candles and dinner in the ornate dining room. Christmas Day, however, Lee and his family enjoy just an intimate gathering of core members around the Christmas tree. Lee’s company can make your home look fabulous, too. He’s “not a one-trick pony,” he says. He works with a lot of modern homeowners. His company does major renovations and interior design. He is a former banker, so when the company does a construction project, they’re “on time and on budget,” he says. “It’s all about the client.” He’s worked on projects all over the country but Louisville is his home. “It’s the only onestop show in Louisville,” he says.

at Well, Love Life” is the personal and professional motto of Anoosh Bistro Chef/Owner and self-described “Zen Foodmaster” Anoosh Shariat. Executive Chef Mark Ford’s elegant, yet accessible dishes served with Anoosh’s signature ebullient hospitality make an evening at Anoosh Bistro a festive occasion during this or any time of the year. Following a cancer diagnosis, Anoosh Shariat brought Chef Mark Ford in to lead the kitchen and develop new menu items. They had worked together on and off for twelve years at Shariat’s previous restaurants, Browning’s and Park Place. Chef Ford’s resumé also includes the former St. Charles Exchange and opening chef at Artesano Tapas Y Mas. He is a graduate of the Sullivan University culinary arts program and classically French trained. That training is diversified by his growing up enjoying the cooking of his Italian and German grandmothers, experience with Spanish tapas, and the Southern charm that always seems to wend its way into Louisville restaurant kitchens of any cuisine. The cuisine at Anoosh Bistro can best be described as New American, even as it pulls influence from many different directions, including the Persian/Asian influences of Anoosh Shariat himself. Their kitchen is open to, and embraces, different ideas, varied ingredients, and has fun while doing so. Main menu inspirations are seasonality and Shariat and Ford’s personal preferences. For holiday and winter menus in particular, hearty comfort food is brought to the fore. Spring and summer menus lighten up in natural response to warmer weather and feature the fresh seafood Louisville is so fortunate to have access to via the UPS hub at Louisville International Airport. For example, fresh fish from Honolulu, Hawaii arrives at the Bistro within 24-36 hours. In fact, approximately 65% of the Anoosh Bistro menu is revised at least four times per year with the seasons. The remaining 35% is comprised of staple items carried over from the restaurant location’s former occupant, Henry’s Place, whose regulars have now become as loyal to Anoosh.

main menu attraction for this holiday/winter season is an elevated version of the French “peasant” dish Boeuf Bourguignon, made famous in America by chef, author, and television personality Julia Child in her classic cookbook “Mastering the Art of French Cooking” and featured in the 2009 film Julie & Julia. Traditionally, Boeuf Bourguignon was prepared for the rustic table by slowly braising and stewing to tenderness more readily available and/ or affordable tougher cuts of meat in a red wine sauce incorporating onions and mushrooms. Chef Ford enriches and refines the dish with the use of beef short ribs, in-house cured pork belly bacon, and assorted wild and cultivated mushrooms.
Seasonal specialty menus for catered and in-house events have a large role to play in Anoosh Bistro’s outreach to the community. This past summer featured an Heirloom Tomato Dinner. A “one night only” Wild Game Dinner is planned for this winter. In November, a tremendous night of fundraising for Gilda’s Club Kentuckiana resulted in the successful auction of three $20,000 dinners to be prepared by Anoosh Shariat. A James Beard Taste America® Pop-Up Dinner will be held at Anoosh Bistro on Monday, January 13, 2020. This Dinner Menu is to be composed and presented by Anoosh Shariat and Visiting All-Star Chef Maneet Chauhan. Chef Chauhan, along with her husband and two other business partners, is a founding partner of Morph Hospitality Group whose portfolio includes the Nashville, Tennessee restaurants Chauhan Ale & Masala House, Tànsuŏ, The Mockingbird diner, and Chaatable Indian Street Food. She is immediately recognizable to Food Network viewers as a regular judge on Chopped and has made many other local and national television appearances.

While he experiences the typical pressures and long hours in the organization and training required for the operation of the Anoosh Bistro kitchen, Executive Chef Mark Ford finds that these are far outweighed by the creativity and rewards of his occupation. “Everything we do revolves around our passion for food and hospitality.” He and his staff are inspired to create quality, healthful meals and to treat each guest “as if they were coming to our home.” Regarding current and future trends, they have already had success playing with vegetarian menu items. Chef Ford enjoys the challenge of “creating dishes that have the feel of not being vegetarian” incorporating plantbased, unprocessed whole foods such as mushrooms and lentils. The vegetarian diet is not only healthier but results in a lower carbon footprint, reducing the CO2 emissions of the cattle industry. But fear not carnivores and omnivores! The addition of the bourbon glaze and the crispy country ham bring home a “festive Kentucky-themed feeling for the holidays,” says the chef. Yields 48 skewers.

− 2 Tbsp vanilla extract
− 1 cup honey
− ¼ tsp salt
− 1 cup almonds
− 2 cups whole milk
− ½ cup brandy
− ½ navel orange, whole
− ¾ cup pecans
Brasserie Province’s Oysters in Champagne Sabayon Step outside the box and take part in a holiday tradition from France by creating a champagne-based oyster appetizer. Brasserie Province’s Oysters in Champagne Sabayon, a special appetizer in December from Brasserie Province, 150 N. Hurstbourne Parkway, isn’t difficult to make, says owner Guy Genoud. Serves 6. Bon Appetit!
− 24 medium Brussels Sprouts cut in half tough leaves removed − 2 ea large honey crisp apple cut into bite size chunks (about one inch by one inch)
1. Cook the shallots and leeks with 1oz of butter, set aside. 2. Clarify 2oz of butter. − 3 dozens of freshly shucked Chesapeake Bay oysters
3. In a pan add egg yolks and 1/2 cup of the Champagne. Cook slowly with the use of a whisk.

4. When the Sabayon thickens, remove the pan from the heat, and add salt and pepper.
− 3 small leeks chopped finely − 4 shallots chopped finely − 6 egg yolks − 3 oz of butter − Salt & Pepper
5. Add clarified butter and the remaining Champagne by still using a whisk, add salt and pepper. 6. Add the shallot and leek mix into the oyster shells. 7. Add the Sabayon to the oyster shells. Put them under the broiler for a few minutes to get coloration. 8. Serve immediately.
1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. While oven preheats, combine ingredients for the glaze in a small sauce pan and bring to a boil then reduce to simmer over medium heat. Allow the glaze to simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and reserve.

2. Toss the Brussels sprouts with 2 Tbsp. of olive oil and 1 tsp. of kosher salt and lay in an even layer on a baking sheet. Par roast Brussels sprouts for 5 minutes in preheated 400 degree oven.

3. Allow Brussels sprouts to cool until you are able to handle them with your hands.
− 1 tsp. Diamond Krystal kosher salt
4. Toss the par cooked warm Brussels Sprouts with 4 oz. of the bourbon sorghum glaze.
− Glaze- yield 1 ½ cups
5. Toss the apple chunks with remaining 2 Tbsp. of olive oil.
− 1 cup sorghum
6. On a 4 inch wooden skewer, skewer one piece of apple. Wrap a piece of Brussels Sprout with a piece of thinly sliced country and then skewer to secure ham. Follow the Brussels Sprout with another piece of apple. Repeat process placing prepared skewers on a nonstick pan sprayed cookie sheet.
− 1 cup bourbon of choice − 1 tsp. paprika − ¼ tsp. cayenne pepper − 1 tsp. Diamond Krystal kosher salt
For the icing: − 1 # powdered sugar − ½# butter − 1 tsp vanilla extract − ½ cup whole milk
7. Once all the skewers are assembled, place in the preheated 400 degree oven for 10-15 minutes until the ham is crisp and the apples and Brussels sprouts are tender. 8. Move the skewers to a serving platter and use a spoon to drizzle the glaze over the top.

7. Place the fig filling over the dough and roll into a pinwheel, refrigerate until firm and slice ¼ inch thick.
2. Add the eggs and mix well.
8. Place cookies on a greased tray and bake approx. 8-10 minutes until very light golden brown around edges.
3. Combine dry ingredients. 4. Combine the vanilla and milk, alternately add the dry mix with the milk mixture. Dough will be a little sticky. 5. Wrap dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for several hours.
9. While the cookies cool, combine all icing ingredients together in a mixer and whip till smooth. Transfer icing into a piping bag. 10. Once cookies are fully cooled, drizzle with icing.
6. Roll dough into large rectangular sections to coincide with fig filling.

utchertown Grocery Bakery began in a 10’ by 14’ space adjacent to Butchertown Grocery’s upstairs lounge. But it didn’t stay there long. The flavor and craftsmanship of the breads, desserts, and pastries prepared by Chef Barbara Turner and her team led to a demand which could no longer be met in the small space. This fall, Butchertown Grocery Chef & Owner Bobby Benjamin expanded the operation, opening Butchertown’s first bakery, Butchertown Grocery Bakery at 743 East Main Street, just two blocks from the restaurant. It is a classic bakery with modern and regional touches, serving locally-roasted coffee from Goodfolks Coffee, along with beer, freshsqueezed juice, kombuchas, and many other delightful beverage options. Guests can even purchase bottles of single barrel Kentucky bourbon. The chocolate program at the bakery features “flights” made from the single barrel selections as well. The bakery and café is open from 7am to 7pm every day for breakfast and lunch service, offering a wide array of selections for any time of day - breakfast and lunch sandwiches, salads, and soups are all on the menu. There are even options, such as chicken pot pie, to take home and heat for dinner. All breads and pastries are made fresh daily and include more than forty selections, such as baguettes, biscuits, buns, bialy, muffins, focaccia, tartes, cookies, and Valrhona chocolates. For the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, traditional American takeout items include pumpkin pie, banana pudding, chocolate chunk cookies by the dozen, and pecan pie. The bakery is a true extension of the restaurant, and shares its values: sourcing the finest ingredients, treating them with respect, exercising the proper technique, and serving the resulting menu items with hospitality and pride.

E Appliances, a Haier Company, is an appliance manufacturer headquartered at GE Appliance Park here in Louisville for the past 70 years, with operations in nine other locations in the Southeastern United States. Their corporate giving philosophy is tailored to investing in building stronger communities and working with partners to provide people with the resources they need to be successful. Subsequently, charitable partners and recipients are specially selected for each community and, according to Communications Director Allison Martin, receive a “variety of different levels of giving” in the form of donations, gifts, investments, and countless hours of employee volunteerism. Diversity and inclusion are of particular importance in the GE Appliances outreach strategy to leverage all possible resources in making the community more successful. Efforts in the Louisville area include an initiative

-Soft Consulting, is a full-service IT consulting company headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky with several locations throughout North America as well as two offices in India. President Purna Veer created V-Soft Cares 501(c)(3) as a means to give back to the community and support cancer patients everywhere. V-Soft Cares’ largest endeavor is the Annual Charity Golf Scramble. Now going into its seventh year, this 18-hole golf scramble held at Valhalla Golf Club is organized by a committee of
this fall in the Russell neighborhood, involving eleven site locations and twelve different agencies. Throughout the year, GE Appliances works with local women’s shelters and Family Scholar House. They have donated refrigerators and freezers to Dare to Care food banks to supplement non-perishables with fresh produce and proteins so important to a healthy diet and often scarce in inner-city neighborhoods. Allison adds that, “You’d be hard-pressed to find a community agency that doesn’t have some connection to GE Appliances.” Their partnership with Jefferson County Public Schools has resulted in donations of appliances, a $500,000 Manufacturing Lab for The Academies of Louisville career and technical program providing learning opportunities and real-world experience to Doss High School students, and appliances and technology for the JCPS Backpack League summer learning initiative. These programs benefit the math, science, and technology education of students and the future of manufacturing and technological innovation here in Louisville and beyond.

The most recent scramble, held on October 7, 2019, involved over 25 sponsors, donations from over 50 area businesses, 82 golfers, raffles, and live and silent auctions. Together they raised $41,700 for Gilda’s Club Kentuckiana. The 7th Annual Charity Golf Scramble will be held July 20, 2020 at the prestigious Valhalla Golf Club. V-Soft Consulting has been named one of the Best Places to Work in Kentucky for three years and Best Places to Work in Louisville for five years. This

The Giving Issue is, at least in part, due to the fact that President Purna Veer encourages and supports offices nationwide to participate in community outreach opportunities and quarterly team-building events. V-Soft has supported Hope Scarves, Little Pink Houses of Hope, Brent’s Place, and various other organizations. In the most recent holiday drive, the Louisville staff is supporting the Norton Children’s Oncology Unit by collecting food, clothing, toys, and other gifts. In past community givebacks, V-Soft has provided backpacks and school supplies to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kentuckiana. Purna Veer is also owner of Tandoori Fusion, a local restaurant offering authentic Indian cuisine, which features a different charity every week and allows a portion of all proceeds to go to that organization. He also serves on the Board for both the Urban League of Louisville and the YMCA.
Raytheon Missile Systems
D
efense contractor Raytheon Missile Systems’ Louisville plant held Veterans Day ceremonies last month to honor men and women who have served in the United States military. Nearly two hundred people were in attendance. The event was catered by Mission BBQ and Roosters, featured a reading of “A Soldier’s Poem” by Angela Goodwin and a ceremonial saber cake-cutting. Veterans in attendance received lanyards, coins, pins, and t-shirts. There were handmade quilt and wooden sign raffles along with a book giveaway of No Barriers: A Blind Man’s Journey to Kayak the Grand Canyon by Erik Weihenmayer. Such events are important for morale, says Raytheon Electronics Mechanic and Marine vet Dave Shugerman, to “recognize the sacrifice each of the veterans and their families have made.” Raytheon Public and Community Relations Director John Patterson tells of the thousands of veterans in the company’s employee ranks whose patriotism is on display with photos and American flags on their desks. They had such a tremendous sense of pride in uniform; and outreach to fellow veterans helps fill the void now as civilians out of uniform. As Quality Manager and Executive Sponsor of RAYVETS, Xavier Pereda explains that “the transition from front line combat to corporate America is not as easy

as flipping a switch.” RAYVETS is a Raytheon employee resource group that seeks to improve morale, education, assistance, and benefits to veterans. They partner with national and community organizations such as Active Heroes, Reach Across America, Wounded Warriors, and Toys for Tots. With the products they provide, Raytheon Missile Systems ultimately seeks to provide our uniformed men and women with an unfair advantage to keep them safe on the battlefield. The employees who fought on the front
lines wish to give back to those who still serve. Sometimes they put in a full week’s work and still volunteer to help veterans or students in their local community with math and science tutoring. Raytheon also provides career counseling for vets and has outfitted Boys & Girls Clubs near military installations with Centers of Innovation that feature after-school learning adventures in 3-D printing and robotics. Here in Louisville, Raytheon has partnered with University of Louisville JB Speed School of Engineering on STEM education events for middle and high school students.

here was a day years ago that changed Dawne Gee’s life forever. She met a little boy from a food insecure home who proudly told her the way he found to stop his stomach from hurting when he didn’t get anything to eat. “I eat paper. Then it goes away.” Dawne was rocked. After she went outside

and took a moment to absorb what she had just encountered, she made a resolve to do something. From that moment, A Recipe to End Hunger was born. “If everyone would just give a little, so many hard things that we think we can’t change, we could change,” she says. These days Christi Mack, the wife of Louisville basketball coach Chris Mack, cleans up dribble from her youngest, Brayden; passes on nights out on the town with friends and scores great deals for her family. hristi Mack has traded her gifted athletic skills for the skills of motherhood and CEO of the Mack household. That CEO status includes making executive decisions that concern all three children: Lainee, a freshman volleyball player at Sacred Heart, Hailee, an 8th grader, and soon-to-be 5 year old Brayden, both at St. Mary’s. “The biggest challenge we have is getting the kids quality time with their dad,” Christi said. “With Chris’s busy schedule, he may be on the road or swamped with commitments so we will build in blocks of time for the kids to be with him. For example, he’s taken the girls on recruiting trips one at a time. We are always looking for opportunities for Brayden to spend quality time with him. After a couple of days without Dad around, Brayden really misses him.” This super mom has traded her athletic gifts for the gift of motherhood and she’s thriving with it. Here’s what she had to say about a number of topics including the growth of the Mack Family Foundation, her ties to the community, and instilling the values and character traits that they deem most important for their children.
What’s the best advice you received as a young mother and the best advice you can give a young mother? This comes from Amy Miller (wife of Arizona basketball coach Sean Miller). She told me, and this may sound a little odd, but she told me that if I don’t count on Chris, I won’t be disappointed. Don’t hold him to a standard that he simply cannot accomplish due to his schedule and commitments. Chris is an awesome dad. He makes all of us a priority and I think people see that on his social media platforms. He’s really good at making time for all of the kids and the family. As far as advice to give a young mother, that’s simple: you’re not perfect and don’t judge yourself based on what other moms are doing. But, use the examples and advice from other moms that you think will help you and your family.
What do you want to accomplish as a mother and as a leader in the household? As the girls are in 8th and 9th grades currently, and Brayden about to turn 5 in December, I want to continue to be a mom to them, not their best friend. I don’t have a laptop or iPad, but my phone is my world as far as keeping our family schedule. Along those lines, it’s important to me to lead the kids in a direction where they don’t judge themselves based on, or get wrapped up in social media. After meeting the needs of the kids, number one on the list of things I want to accomplish is growing The Mack Family Foundation. The city of Louisville is important to me. I grew up in an area where there is a need for help. I want to serve those communities that need it most. Our foundation mission statement: ‘The Mack Family Foundation is a family-fueled Foundation whose mission is to serve, inspire and help less fortunate children in Metro-Louisville.’ We’ve had great success (with the Foundation) in the past and we’re excited about our upcoming calendar of events all around Louisville. We’re super fortunate to have a great Board of Directors who are clued-in to the needs of our community. They are connecting us with great people who will help us reach kids from toddlers up through 6th grade. Our kids totally understand what it means to give back and to serve in their community. They’ve really taken our Foundation to heart. They’re seeing the impact that our reading initiatives are having on the kids that The Mack Family Foundation is serving. Our newest program that Chris has been really passionate about is giving kids a Louisville basketball game experience. How many kids drive by the YUM! Center in a car or on a bus and never get the chance to step inside and see it? We’re giving 20 kids that opportunity for five different games this year. The kids get to sit and talk to Chris and spend time getting a game experience.

Westport transformed two vacant spaces into indoor holiday markets that opened Nov. 15 and will be going strong every weekend through Dec. 22. Local shops from Butchertown, NuLu and other areas of Louisville, plus online stores, are bringing their wares to the East End so you can park once and find all kinds of unique gifts for the holidays. “We are creating this Holiday Pop-Up Shoppe to bring together small businesses from all around the city for a convenient way to shop local and support the community during the holidays,” says Carmen Schreiber, marketing associate of Westport Village. “The Shoppe is also great because it gives local retailers an opportunity to be part of an established shopping destination during its highest traffic season.” What a win-win situation Westport Village

A Twist of Pink One woman’s cancer journey turns into a million dollar research foundation BY TAYLOR RILEY PHOTO BY DICK ARNSPIGER
C
aroline Johnson was in “complete shock” by her diagnosis of Stage III breast cancer right before she turned 40 in June 2013––after all, she had a baseline mammogram a year and a half prior. But, when she felt a lump on her left breast, her doctor immediately ordered an ultrasound and biopsy. “That started my whole journey of breast cancer,” says Caroline, founder of Twisted Pink, a group whose mission it is to fund Stage IV or metastatic breast cancer research. After Caroline was diagnosed, doctors persuaded her to have a lumpectomy, but unfortunately the margin was not clear of the cancer cells, so a week later she had a mastectomy on her left breast and a tissue expander was placed for reconstruction. Things got worse for her when doctors found that the cancer had spread into her lymph nodes. “It was devastating,” she says. Caroline went through 19 rounds of chemotherapy, 28 radiation treatments and participated in a clinical trial until she ended treatment in February 2014. Caroline was hospitalized again for an infection in her tissue expander after her reconstructed breast became infected from the radiation treatments and had to be removed. She went without a breast for eight months and then had a tram flap reconstruction procedure to replace the failed tissue expander. Today, she takes daily medication that is working to prevent any cancer cells left in her body from growing on the hormone estrogen. Caroline has learned a lot about the many stages of breast cancer in the past few years, including that her Stage III estrogen positive breast cancer has a 20 to 30 percent chance of recurrence. Metastatic breast cancer is different than other types of cancer; when breast cancer is diagnosed as metastatic, it has moved from the breast to other parts of

This year, the gala is Feb. 29, the “extra” day of the year to celebrate “another day” at the Hyatt Regency Louisville. Tickets are $200 and the theme this year is Monte Carlo Masquerade. The annual Dace Polk Brown Ambassador Award will be presented at the event to a person who supports and believes in the mission of Twisted Pink. “The event is meant to celebrate life and to raise much needed funding for metastatic breast cancer research.” Find out more about Twisted Pink at TwistedPink.org.

The median survival rate upon diagnosis is three years and patients will be in treatment for the rest of their lives. “All along this journey, I met some amazing people and asked some difficult questions,” Caroline says. “I wanted to do more to fund research, educate myself and find what information is true.”
When Caroline founded Twisted Pink, her goal was to raise money for metastatic breast cancer research because only 7 percent of dollars were being directed to save the lives of those facing a terminal diagnosis. It is estimated that 155,000 people living in the U.S. have metastatic breast cancer and 40,000 of these will die each year. The name comes from a “twist” of the hot pink ribbon made popular by Estee Lauder’s Breast Cancer Awareness campaign. Caroline did not want her foundation to be “pink-washed,” where very little money goes to research. “A twist of the pink ribbon is more of what it should be … it represents a new growth. To change awareness into the cure,” Caroline says. In 2017, together with Hope Scarves and The Cancer Couch Foundation, $600,000 was raised and with an anonymous 1 to 1 match a total of $1.2 million was directed to metastatic breast cancer research. In 2018, Twisted Pink created a private support group for individuals both living with metastatic breast cancer to receive support from their peers and breast cancer survivors to understand what it is like to live with cancer. The group is open to any stage IV patient or early stage survivors that share in the passion of advocating for Stage IV research, according to the website. A small grant from The Lexington Cancer Foundation will help this group continue to grow in 2020.

ALICE BARBEE CASTLEMAN [1842-1926]
Developing a trusted relationship
Across the country there is a growing movement to recognize noteworthy women and their historical contributions through public monuments. Unfortunately, less than 7% of the 5,193 monuments in the United States presently recognize women. We are about to change that statistic with the “Breaking the Bronze Ceiling” initiative. Each month TOPS will feature a Kentucky woman who impacted the Women’s Rights Movement. For more information visit breakingthebronzeceiling.com.

lice Osmond Barbee was born at home at 6th and Walnut Streets in Louisville, Kentucky, in the early 1840s to John Barbee and Eliza Kane. John Barbee served as mayor from 1854-1855. Alice was the oldest of five children. Several of the male ancestors in the Barbee line served in the Revolutionary War, ultimately receiving land grants in “Western Virginia” which is now Kentucky. One such ancestor, William Barbee, was with George Washington on the night of the crossing of the Delaware. His brother Thomas Barbee, at 17, had an affair with a slave, producing a daughter, Lydia, who eventually married a Tuscarora Native American. Thomas married twice in his life, but had no more children. He stipulated in his will that Lydia and her children be free persons and educated, virtually unheard of at the time. Alice Barbee was “educated in the East” before meeting her future husband. John Breckinridge Castleman hailed from Lexington, Kentucky, where he was studying pre-law at Transylvania University when the War Between the States broke out. He recruited 41 men to Knoxville, Tennessee and formed the 2nd Kentucky Cavalry under Confederate General John Hunt Morgan. Castleman opposed the institution of slavery, but advocated for states’ rights. He distinguished himself in the war, but was arrested, convicted of spying, and sentenced to death. This sentence was commuted to exile by President Abraham Lincoln. John then attended medical school in Paris, France where he also sought and received a pardon from President Andrew Johnson. John returned to Kentucky in 1866, settling in Louisville on 60 acres of land known

He graduated with a law degree from the University of Louisville in 1868 and married Alice on November 24, 1868, in a double wedding with her sister Charlotte and John Galleher. According to the Courier-Journal, the event was “one of the most brilliant social affairs in the history of Louisville.” John would establish Barbee & Castleman Insurance Company with Alice’s father. Alice and John had five children over the next nine years, bred horses, and became
An 1893 book called A Woman of the Century included a profile of Alice. “Always on the alert to advance the cause of woman, she is progressive, cultured, and liberal in her views.” From 1910 to 1911, Alice served as the first Vice-President of the Kentucky Equal Rights Association. This position would lead to her attendance at the 1920 Democratic National Convention in San Francisco for the Presidential nomination of James Cox. She was quoted in The Sun and the New York Herald, “I’m so glad I could come. I think this to be the most important convention since the Civil War. Sometimes I’m tempted to say since 1776. We Democrats have so much to do if we are to frame a successful platform that will fulfill the needs of this after war (post World War I) period.” She was in her late seventies at the time.
