Letter from the editor

It’s summer. How fit are you feeling? While it’s supposed to be laid back, this season of swimsuits, shorts and outdoor activities can be just a bit more anxiety-provoking than most of us like to admit. No matter what shape you’re in, summer activities (and wardrobes) frequently push us to our limits and we discover where we have room for physical improvement. Rather than hide inside in baggy clothes and air conditioning, why not find sneaky big and little ways to weave healthier habits into your summer lifestyle? Our Health & Beauty issue is packed with ideas for doing just that— from a new plant-based café in Nulu to new fitness classes all over town to outdoor living ideas that can help you use these warmer months to enhance your Photographed by Danny Alexander general well-being. We’ve even assembled a User’s Guide to Hospitals that will update you on the full spectrum of new and creative wellness services that our local healthcare organizations provide. So, relax and enjoy this issue. Then, get up, get moving and make the next few summer months the beginning of a healthier, happier you.

A NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM Diving deep into our city’s food culture, a new supper series at the Frazier History Museum pairs lively local culinary figures with fabulous food and rarified, history-drenched ambiance. Dinner anyone? BY CHRISTINE FELLINGHAM

I

t’s another smart, un-stuffy move by the history museum that’s on a mission to engage the community and create thought-provoking experiences for visitors and locals alike. As a tribute to our state’s rich and varied culinary traditions, late this spring Frazier CEO Penelope Peavler launched Farm to Frazier: A Kentucky Supper Series, sponsored by Kroger. The series offers a way to weave a narrative about food and initiate lively conversations between the people behind our culinary scene and those of us who eat their food.

IF YOU GO

Kentucky by Way of Ireland: An Evening with Michael Reidy will take place on Thursday, July 26, 6:30 to 8:30. General admission is $125; Frazier member admission is $115. For information and tickets for this and other suppers, go to fraziermuseum.org/farm2frazier

Featured culinary experts have ranged from the female chefs of Appalachia to August Moon’s Peng Looi to Irish Rover’s owner Michael Reidy, this month. Their unique perspectives on both the local dining scene and their personal cultures tend to generate lively discourse enhanced by delicious menus. Reidy, who came to Louisville from Ireland and started as a bus boy who later went on to open one of our most popular and heralded Irish pubs, is sure to bring his brand of memorable commentary to a fun and feisty summer evening out.

A Little Night Music In a season of outdoor music, there’s a concert series where the music and parking is free… and the shopping discounts are as sweet as the melodies.

I

f the Comfy Cow or cocktails on the patio at Napa River Grill won’t woo you, the sidewalk sales will. For the uninitiated, the Westport Village Summer Concert series combines the allure of open air music with secret sales and nonprofit partnerships to create laid-back, fun-filled evenings for the whole family or your favorite shopping and dining companions. An idyllic night of music with the added element of activities that create awareness for local nonprofits makes these events more than just a fun summer night out. This month’s concert features Abbey Road favorites, 12-piece string and horn ensemble, The Newbees, and includes free registration for Norton’s Bike to Beat Cancer fundraiser. Throw in a few giveaways throughout the show and there should be more than enough incentive to spend a summer night strolling the cobblestones and supporting local shops and restaurants.

20 TOPS LOUISVILLE | July 2018

The Newbees

IF YOU GO

Westport Village shopping center is located at 1315 Herr Lane. Free summer concerts take place between 6 and 8 p.m. and include these remaining dates: July 20; The Newbees and Norton’s Bike to Beat Cancer registration. August 10; Kudmani and YMCA’s Back to School Backpack Drive. September 7: Radiotronic and Dreams with Wings. Visit westportvillage.com for more information.

If You Don’t I Buy A House, You Can Buy The Sofa

t’s the show after the show, for in-the-know Louisville shoppers and designers. The Homearama Furniture Sale is an annual tradition for many who have come to rely on it as a source of stylish, up-to-the-minute décor pieces minus the sticker shock. While not every home on the tour participates, those that do will be open from 1 to 7 p.m. on Monday August 1— often with the goal of clearing their rooms to the bare floors and walls. If you go, be flexible: Prices vary, not every piece of furniture in every home is for sale and each designer has his or her own accepted methods of payment. But admission is free and the opportunities are abundant. It’s also a last-chance to take a look at some of the stunning interiors.

After this month’s much heralded Homearama comes the equally anticipated Homearama Furniture Sale, where you can score the designer furnishings and accessories that wowed the crowds at some remarkable discounts.

22 TOPS LOUISVILLE | July 2018

IF YOU GO

The Homearama Furniture Sale will be held on Monday, July 30 from 1 to 7 p.m. Admission is free. Homearama 2018, presented by the Building Industry Association takes place on July 14 through 29 at Catalpa Farms. Tickets are $10 per person, children 12 and under are free with an adult. For more information, go to Homearama.com or call the BIA office at 502-429-6000

BEKKI JO TRESSLER,

46, Pilates and Barre Yoga instructor at Milestone Fitness

“Give yourself the time that you so diligently give to others on a daily basis. That ‘selfishness’ turns into selflessness, because you will be your best for every person who comes your way.” How did you first get serious about personal fitness? I was a sophomore in college, went to a step class and really enjoyed it. After class the instructor came up and asked if I had ever considered teaching. I was 18 years old and, from that moment on, I was on that path. Through the years, I’ve tried to evolve with the trends. If you stop educating yourself in any field, you’re finished. If you stop reinventing the professional you are, you get left on the wayside. I’ve been doing this for 28 years and I never want to stop. So, I had an opportunity to learn pilates 16 years ago and I opened the pilates center at the Jewish Community Center. I moved to Vegas and learned barre and continued teaching and learning. Now I’m exclusively at Milestone, which I love, because they have everything here and you can keep evolving. What do you gain from your workouts other than physical fitness? Yoga offers a lot of mental clarity. It forces you to practice and be present for one hour and only think about exactly what you are doing, not all the whats, wheres and to-do lists we have. Our minds are always racing. To have an hour three times a week to give my brain is glorious for the soul and my wellbeing. What advice do you have for anyone who can’t seem to get started? You just have to have an open mind and be willing to try something. Ask yourself, ‘What is it that I enjoy doing that could be physical? Do I enjoy dancing and do I want to go to Zumba? Do I want to play racquetball? Do I want to hike or join a hiking club?’ You have to think about the things you enjoy doing. It’s about you and what’s going to serve you best. You have to look within.

SHAALI SINGOGO, 29, Power Vinyassa

yoga instructor at the Northeast YMCA, LC Fitness, Kentucky Yoga Initiatives, and Refugee Youth Services Coordinator at Catholic Charities

“I moved here from Africa two years ago and had no experience with yoga. In my country, there is no yoga at all.”

When did you first become serious about fitness? I went to my first yoga class at the YMCA. It wasn’t part of my lifestyle. The lifestyle in Africa forces you to be healthy, so I already had the physical strength and endurance but I had no experience with fitness classes. Being at the YMCA and interacting with fitness professionals was so interesting to me. My wife invited me to her yoga class and I thought, ‘Well, this is the most unmanly thing I could do.’ But I tried it and thought, ‘Wow, I don’t know why I like this, but I do.’ I got so many compliments; the teacher asked me if I’d consider teacher training. So, I went for training and started teaching. It’s not my full-time job. I’ve been a substance abuse counselor and I work with Catholic Charities as the youth coordinator. But I teach yoga as much as I can.

What’s your fitness routine? I wake up between 2 and 4 a.m. for my two hour yoga practice. I lift weights, run and bike and teach and attend weekly advanced yoga classes and workshops. What do you gain from your workouts other than physical fitness? Through the practice of postures and breathing I have gained direct awareness of my inner self. What’s your advice to others who would like to try yoga but are intimidated? You do not have to be strong or flexible to do yoga. Try different styles of yoga (all beginner or intro classes) and find the class that resonates with you and stick to it! Falling is perfectly normal and fun too. Enjoy the journey and process of self discovery. Yoga is for everyone!

MYKUL VALENTINE, 32, personal trainer at

Planet Fitness, aerialist at Suspend Louisville and former competitive gymnast and cheerleader

“I love the feeling after I exercise. It releases endorphins. I feel like I’ve accomplished something. It positively impacts the way I feel and everything else I do.”

How did you first get serious about personal fitness? I started as a gymnast when I was five because I used to do cartwheels through the mall whenever I went shopping as a kid. I got pretty far in gymnastics. When I was 14, I got recruited to cheerleading for Gym Time and between the ages of 14 to 23, I won Cheerleading Nationals twice and Cheerleading Worlds five times. I ended up tearing my ACL and had to retire.

52 TOPS LOUISVILLE | July 2018

I went on to coach in Malaysia and Australia and all over the U.S. After I got hurt, I tried aerial arts and silks at Suspend Louisville. I found my new love. It has the acrobatics and excitement… and it helped with upper body strength. I traveled with an aerial circus, Le Corpse Ballmonde for a while. It’s a great workout for your upper body and core. What’s your routine? I work out every day or at least five days a week. I do a hypertrophic workout every week. It’s

just a lot of reps with increasing weight. I do 10 minutes of cardio and change it up to keep it interesting. I’ll do stadium stairs, elliptical, running. What advice do you have for anyone who can’t seem to get started? It’s all stepping stones. You have to get into the habit. The trick is really getting into the habit of working out. You can have the body and the energy you’ve dreamed of if you do.

ELIZABETH SPEARS, 37, certified RYT yoga instructor at Bend and Zen Yoga and Milestone Wellness Center

“Yoga has given me much more of a mind body connection than I ever had before.”

When did you first become serious about fitness? I’ve always been an athlete. I ran track and field and played field hockey at Rhodes College in Memphis, TN. Right after college, a fitness studio opened in Memphis. It was heated yoga and I’d never done it before. I was super-excited to try it. I loved it from the first class. I just started and never stopped. What’s your routine? I teach three times a week—three at Bend and Zen and three at Milestone. And I try to practice myself four or five times a week. It could be at my house or it could be a class. I will always remain a student. What do you gain from your workouts other than physical fitness? The thing that immediately comes to my mind is I’m less quick to react to things. In my twenties, I was much

more reactive and defensive. Now, I am able to be calmer in the face of stress. My son had seizures when he was one and three. It was horrifying. It turned out that it was just a childhood seizure disorder, but it was scary. I really leaned on yoga to keep my head on straight and be strong for my son. I have two children—George, who’s now 6 and an 8-year-old daughter, Cooper. We do yoga at home. We practice calming with breath. In just a couple of minutes, it can really help. What advice do you have for anyone who is intimidated by yoga? I tell people just come and be in the room. Come and observe. You don’t have to have athletic ability; you don’t have to be flexible. Everybody is going to be on a different journey and have different bodies. We all do what we can during that given moment.

MARGARITA WILES, 33, Commander Support

When did you get involved in physical fitness? I grew up in Lithuania playing outdoor games, climbing trees, swimming and running outside. Since I can remember, I was always moving.

Staff and Physical Training Leader at Aircraft Maintenance Squadron in Kentucky Air National Guard, Heyman Talent model

How does modeling influence your attitude about fitness? I learned in the fashion industry that a beautiful body is a healthy body. Extreme dieting will take a toll on your health and appearance very quickly. To look good, you have to feel good. For me, feeling good was inseparable from a daily fitness routine.

“Basic Military Training was one of the most amazing adventures of my life. In 8 weeks of training, I learned a lot about myself, developed extraordinary psychological and combat skills and was in better physical shape than ever before.”

What is your proudest fitness accomplishment? Since I started my military career, I maintained a rating of excellent on all my annual PT (Physical Training) tests…. The Physical Training Leader (PTL) program was developed to help maintain Air Force physical fitness standards. As a PTL, I strongly believe in motivating and leading by example. Every day at 3.30 p.m., I am changed into my PT gear and ready to exercise with my peers.

When did you join the Kentucky Air National Guard? I was born to a military family but, where I am from, women don’t serve. After moving to the U.S. in 2013, I started seeing ladies in armed forces uniforms. They all were Wonder Women to me. Only one percent of the population serve in the military, and only 0.17 percent are women. I was dying to become one of them. I joined the Air National Guard in 2014 and shipped out to bootcamp in San Antonio months later.

What’s your regular fitness routine? My routine is a mile and a half run, situps, push-ups, squats and planks four times a week. I work in the office 10 hours a day, so getting outside and receiving my dose of oxygen, sunshine and endorphins is a great end of the work day. What’s your advice for those who can’t seem to get started? Getting started is the hardest part. Very soon you will see the results and quitting will stop being an option. I miss being out of shape,’ said no one, ever.

54 TOPS LOUISVILLE | July 2018

How did you first get serious about personal fitness? Ever since I can remember I have been looking for excuses to go outside and play sports, climb trees, and just be active. For the first thirteen years of playing competitive sports, baseball was the sport. As I progressed throughout high school, my interests shifted towards ice hockey, which I played through my first year of college.

COLBY HAZELIP, 23, head

fitness trainer for Elev8d Fitness, bioengineering student at University of Louisville

“Partial workouts yield partial results, so if you want to not only see, but also feel a good change throughout your whole body, then you need to make sure you spend quality time working out your whole body.”

I was a bit of a late bloomer and didn’t reach physical maturity until I reached college, and that’s when I really began to understand the strong interdependence that existed between training, mental preparation, and in-game performance. I began to learn how to build hip strength and train my true core which then translates into increased flexibility and strength. I finally found the secret connection between all different types of training and… progressed towards whole-body strength and general wellness. What is your regular fitness routine? I like to train using as many different types of exercise as possible so as to achieve a better overall physique and athletic ability. An ideal workout week for me consists of doing my eight-minute Elev8d Fitness workouts everyday, lifting four days a week, trail running two times a week, and yoga at least two times a week. What is your proudest fitness accomplishment? Up to this point, my proudest fitness accomplishment has to be finishing seventh in a Spartan obstacle course race up at Perfect North slopes. What do you gain from your workouts other than physical fitness? I gain a sense of accomplishment and a positive mindset. As someone who struggles with clinical depression, I rely on working out and being active and healthy to provide myself with my own natural anti-depressants. What advice do you have for anyone who can’t seem to get started? Pick something you enjoy doing and to be patient with the work. Hating something like running but still doing it can actually have negative effects on your health.

Age -Defying

Beauty And Health Breakthroughs BY DIANNE H. TIMMERING

T

he world of health and beauty revolves around an endless race towards some antidote to the less desirable symptoms of aging. It is the continual push to revolutionize the anti-aging battle and discover the mysterious fountain of youth. From cosmetics to topical creams to lasers to vitamins to surgeries, there are so many options to consider at each stage and age. Every year yields new discoveries to be deciphered and decoded. To streamline that process, we have highlighted some of the most exciting new cosmetic procedures and products for 2018. Here, you’ll find a list of safe solutions that will reverse or improve those signs of unwanted external changes—those that can maintain, enhance, sustain, or regain the healthful appearance of the past, for our body’s future.

56 TOPS LOUISVILLE | July 2018

1

Anti-aging with Plasma. Plasma Rich Platelets (PRP) have been used for years to help orthopedic rehab patients heal faster. Now, they’re being used to help repair and restore aging skin and promote hair growth. This breakthrough use in the cosmetic world is reversing the wear and tear of aging.

“While the Plasma injectables aren’t new, they are new to the cosmetic world and we are seeing great outcomes, especially when the service is combined with other topical creams or the collagen pen,” say Dr. Sarita Nair, Medical Director at Body RX Med Spa. ”It produces new collagen, which helps to reverse the aging process.” How it works: PRP therapy involves drawing the patient’s blood and spinning it with the force of centrifuge to separate the plasma from the white and red blood cells. The plasma is then injected back into the face, the neck and chest. Micro-needling across the skin’s surface produces new collagen to help speed up the plasma’s effectiveness.

Benefits: It’s good for mild to moderate aging, acne, loose skin around the eyes and mouth, as well as restoring hair loss in both men, and women. “This is a breakthrough in the cosmetic world!” says Dr. Nair. And it could be the greatest breakthrough we’ve seen in a long time for the eyes and upper lip.

Non-surgical rejuvenation down there.

If you follow pop culture news or reality stars, you’ve heard someone unabashedly discuss the “power” of their new “V-JJ.” Vaginal rejuvenation or vagioplasty is the surgical procedure that “tightens up” the vagina after childbirth or menopause or to alter the natural effects of aging. “Vaginal rejuvenation is exploding,” says Dr. Julene Samuels, “and without the need for invasive surgery because technology has improved so much.” Most patients don’t want the down-time that vaginal surgery often necessitates and fortunately, there’s now a non-surgical solution.

How it works: Dr. Samuels uses three non-surgical devices that help treat painful sex, dryness, and incontinence, for example. One, called electromagnetic therapy, targets the muscle around the urethra through either a laser or radio frequency, promoting collagen remodeling and formation in the vaginal canal resulting in new elasticity and therefore, tightening.

Benefits: A recent study released in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal found that after the first treatment, there was a 90 percent response rate, after the second, a 97 percent response rate, and the third—a 100 percent response rate reversing vaginal dryness and painful sex.

Orgasm Enhancer. The “O Shot” (Orgasm shot) is the latest remedy for the postpartum woman who isn’t menopausal but feels like her vagina is “broken,” and for any woman who is having painful sex, difficulty in achieving an orgasm or loss of libido. “The O-shot just seems to make everything better!” says Dr. Samuels. Not all women have intra-vaginal orgasms. There are some women who never experience an orgasm and the O-shot not only seems to help, but it often does it in one shot.

How it works: The O Shot is a painless, all-natural non-surgical procedure using PRP, or platelet rich plasma as described above, from your own blood. Through a small injection, it is re-injected into the clitoris and upper vagina areas where the “O-spot” has its greatest “punch,” so to speak. The procedure may take less than 30 minutes and for some, the results are immediate with long-term results. The O-Shot is even a companion treatment maximizing the effectiveness of vaginal rejuvenation. Benefits: Any vaginal condition that you have at any stage of life can usually be treated with vaginal rejuvenation devices in conjunction with the O-shot. Approximately 65% of menopausal women with dryness get only one shot, and it may be one to five years before a second one is even needed.

4

Longer lasting injectables. Newer large-volume injectables not only increase the volume of depressed areas in the face for a lifted, refreshed look, but they last for years. Sculptra can last up to four and Bellafill up to five. How it works: The fillers are injected into hollow areas of the face, adding youthful fullness and making skin appear more taut.

Benefits: There is no downtime, virtually no side effects and results last for years.

Lashing Out Long, lush lashes without a spec of mascara may become this summer’s most wanted beauty goal. As Peyton Froula reports, they’re now available at a salon near you. PHOTOS BY DICK ARNSPIGER AND COURTESY PHOTOS

I

t’s the beauty solution for women who have neither the time nor patience to apply false eyelashes every day, but wish they did. From working professionals to stay-at-home moms to just about everyone in between, women in search of lush, natural-looking lashes are lining up to try the lastest Hollywood-fueled trend to land in Louisville: lash extensions. In the last few months, eyelash services have been popping up around town at Salons like Joseph’s Salon and Spa, and at specialty lounges including Skye Lash Lounge on Frankfort Avenue, the soonto-be-open The Lash Lounge in Chenoweth Square and Dekka Lash in Westport Village. So what does it take to transform your

58 TOPS LOUISVILLE | July 2018

wispy lashes into full-on lush fringe? The application process for eyelash extensions takes anywhere from two to three hours for a new set. Lash sets are applied to the natural lash line using semi-permanent, non-toxic adhesive that won’t harm your natural lashes. Once the extensions are applied, they require fill-ins every two to five weeks, depending on the person. Skye Lash Lounge owner Amber Skye describes her procedure as something they “customize to the client, ensuring nothing we do to the lashes will damage them.” The personalization and care the lounges put into their services ensure the client will love her new lashes. The clientele are hardly all beauty queens and would-be Kardashians; many clients prefer lash extensions because they’re more natural and practical than mascara. They’re popular with “beauty

junkies,” of course, but they’re also popular with women who wear very little makeup—such as trainers, athletes and swimmers. However, they’re not for everyone. Lash extensions are not recommended for anyone undergoing chemo therapy, major surgeries, or people with alopecia who may lack natural hairs to get lash extensions. While this service can help you streamline and simplify your daily routine, there are a few steps you should take to maintain your new lashes. Jen Kalmey of The Lash Lounge recommends you ask your esthetician which mascara brands are safe to use on your lashes, as they can be sensitive to oils and glycols found in beauty products. It is also generally recommended to clean and brush your extensions daily to help prolong their longevity. On the upside, lash extensions are waterproof, which means you can have beautiful lashes in the pool and in sweltering hot humidity, all summer long.

Here’s the scoop on two new lounges:

SKYE LASH LOUNGE

2704 Frankfort Avenue Louisville, Kentucky 40206 (502) 554-7911

Skye Lash Lounge opened its doors at its Frankfort Avenue location September 2017. While their niche and most popular service continues to be eyelash extensions, Skye Lash Lounge also offers lash lifts and tints, spray tans, waxing, injections and even bridal party suite rentals. The lounge is a trendy, warm place with a vibrant staff and eclectic décor. Some of their most prominent aspects of their salon lie in the interior design—they have swings as chairs and beds that hang from the ceiling rafters. When asked what made them special, owner Amber Skye Fair responded: “Skye Lash Lounge takes pride in keeping the integrity of your natural lash and ensuring nothing we do will damage them. Our twin-size beds that hang from the ceiling, adult ‘sippy cups,’ and friendly atmosphere make for the best lash experience.”

THE LASH LOUNGE

3934 Chenoweth Square Louisville, Kentucky 40207 (502) 353–1414

The Lash Lounge, an upcoming addition to the Louisville beauty scene, plans to open its doors early August. Owner Jen Kalmey plans on bringing her beauty-vision to life with The Lash Lounge. When asked what makes The Lash Lounge unique, Kalmey replied, “The Lash Lounge provides a premium eyelash salon experience where we help women effortlessly face the world with confidence. At the Lash Lounge in St. Matthews, we not only pride ourselves in our services, but our overall customer experience. Our niche is Eyelash Extensions with other brow and lash services.”

I

t seems like every week there is at least one new fitness studio popping up someplace around town. Whether it’s a barre boutique, indoor cycling studio, or a high-tech body monitoring facility, each new option has the allure of finding The Perfect Workout for you— one that will finally deliver the results that may be eluding you. But sizing up these newbies and screening out the ones that don’t fit your life, your fitness style or your goals can take a lot of time, research, and of course, energy that

you could be devoting to getting fit. So, I asked expert Alison Cardoza at Milestone Wellness Center to help me try out these trending workouts and find my new summer groove. Alison is ACSM-Certified personal trainer at the Milestone Wellness Center and has 14 years of experience in Exercise Science and Sports Medicine. With her expertise at my disposal, I was able to gather a lot of information and sort the marketing noise from the news. Here’s what she had to say about some workouts everyone is talking about:

HIIT Training, also known as High Intensity Interval Training, focuses on bursts of max effort for about 20-90 seconds, followed by low intensity recovery. HIIT classes typically range from 30 minutes to an hour. Pro: It is a great cardiovascular workout for fat burning.

Con: It can sometimes lead to overtraining and increased risk of injury if you do it daily. Where: Louisville offers many boot camps that do HIIT training. Some of those places include Milestone, where they offer boot camp classes as well as a VO2 max class, and Orange Theory.

Cycling classes aren’t new but they are newly popular. Pro: A great way to get in some intense cardio for about 30-45 minutes under the guidance of an instructor while listening to upbeat music. Con: Less variety since you are always on a stationary bike. Where: Cyclebar, Milestone, and many other gyms/studios.

TOPS LOUISVILLE | July 2018 61

health+beauty

Barre is a mix of pilates, dance (ballet), and functional training. This workout incorporates small, controlled movements with light weights or bodyweight. Pro: It sculpts, strengthens, and elongates muscles. Con: The only con is that there are so many studios to choose from that it can be intimidating to figure out which one is best for you. Where: Barre Code, Pure Barre, Barre3, B.You, and Milestone. Alison’s advice is to try as many free trials as you can.

Kickboxing is an intense cardio workout that’s become extremely popular in the last couple of years. Pro: It helps reduce stress, boost confidence, burn calories and get your heart pumping. Con: Increased risk for injury if moves are not done the right way. Where: Milestone, Real Fighters, ILoveKickboxing, 9Round.

62 TOPS LOUISVILLE | July 2018

Pilates is making a comeback because it’s a workout that focuses on your physical strength as well as your mental awareness. Pro: Clients can benefit from core and stability training with enhanced breathing techniques. Spinning off pilates, is Pi-Yo which is a fast paced workout that combines pilates and yoga for a great core workout. Con: It involves intricate equipment which may take a couple of sessions to master. Where: Milestone, Club Pilates, Get Healthy Now, and many other gyms around the Ville.

Lyft rides for cancer patients In August of 2017, the Baptist Health Foundation received a $25,000 grant from the Kentuckiana Cancer Research Foundation to fund rides for patients undergoing cancer treatment. The oncology social work team is averaging about 40 rides per month through Lyft. The program is now expanding to help patients at Baptist Health facilities throughout region.

Anesthesia Music Therapy Recently the Foundation funded $5,000 grant for Anesthesia Music Therapy for Surgical Services. Equipment for individualized music and noise cancelling headphones are now being used in the pre-operative setting. Research shows that playing music while patients are receiving anesthesia reduces anxiety, heart rate and blood pressure, produces a state of relaxation, masks noise in the operating room and decreases the need for pharmacologic intervention.

THE 500th HEART TRANSPLANT The Jewish Hospital Trager Transplant Center and the University of Louisville marked an important milestone in February 2018 – the 500th heart transplant performed at the hospital since the program began there nearly 35 years ago. “Together, with UofL, Jewish Hospital’s Trager Transplant Center is investing in research, technology and advanced procedures to increase access to transplant services,” said Ronald Waldridge, II, MD, president of Jewish Hospital.

RESERVE TODAY! Life-changing Pancreas Procedure Richard Sutton was diagnosed with chronic pancreatitis after four attacks in eight months. In excruciating pain, Sutton was referred to the Pancreas Disease Center at Jewish Hospital, one of the few facilities in the world performing total pancreatectomy with islet auto-transplantation. In September 2017, Sutton underwent the procedure. Typically, removing the entire pancreas creates severe diabetes in the patient. With islet autotransplant the patient’s own insulin-producing islets are recovered and reinfused into the liver to prevent or lessen the severity of long-term diabetes. Sutton remains a diabetic, but his chronic pain is gone. He was able to return to work and calls the procedure life-changing.

Pivot to Peace Three years ago, the U of L Hospital instituted a community violenceintervention program called Pivot to Peace. Using the influential and impactful moment created by hospitalization to have a conversation, patients admitted with a gunshot or stab wound are offered resources and given the opportunity to “pivot” to a safer and more positive direction in life. The hospital provides resources such as: counseling, job placement, mentorship, substance abuse treatment, social services, and conflict resolution training after hospitalization.

FIGHTING “INCURABLE” CANCER Researchers at UofL James Graham Brown Cancer Center are using an experimental therapy to fight “incurable” cancer. The therapy is called “tumor infiltrating lymphocytes” or TILs for short. For patients with stage IV melanoma whose tumors progress after standard therapy, this type of immunotherapy may be an option. Early studies have shown TILs induced durable remissions. If this trial phase is successful, then FDA approval could be attainable. And there is a broader hope: TILs trials at UofL Brown Cancer Center are now expanding to lung cancer, cervical cancer, and head and neck cancer.

A NEW PLACE FOR CHILDREN A new era in medical care for children began this June when the Novak Center for Children’s Health at UofL opened to patients and their families. The new 176,000-squarefoot facility at 411 E. Chestnut St. houses all general, specialty and subspecialty pediatrics services in a single eight-story building, meaning patients and their families have all their needs handled in one convenient location. Designed in kid-friendly colors, the facility features several public areas with soft seating and interactive screens to entertain children while they wait to see providers. But the wait shouldn’t be long because of new technology that helps move patients and providers to their appointments.

MoRe for Functional Neurological Disorders The Motor Retraining (MoRe) program at UofL is changing outcomes for patients with functional neurological disorders (FND), one of the most common neurologic conditions many people have never heard about. Patients with FND suffer from symptoms such as uncontrollable tremors, seizure-like spells and weakness. The cause of FND is not well understood, and although patients experience highly distressing symptoms, routine diagnostic tests are typically normal. The MoRe program combines physical, occupational and speech therapy with cognitive behavioral therapy sessions during a week-long inpatient stay at Frazier Rehab Institute. The benefits of MoRe therapy extend far beyond improved motor control, say patients. They have regained their sense of self and independence. One patient said it felt as though he had “gotten my life back.”

Nitrous Oxide for Women in Labor The latest trend in alternative labor options may give many pregnant women a smile. Nitrous oxide, often referred to as laughing gas, is now available to women in labor. An analgesia, not anesthesia, nitrous oxide can reduce pain but does not cause sedation. Breathed in through a mask, the mix of 50 percent nitrous (a form of nitrogen) and 50 percent oxygen is recommended by the American Society of Anesthesiologists. The use of nitrous is available at both Norton Women’s & Children’s Hospital and Norton Hospital for women in labor.

Robotic Spine Surgery The Mazor X robotic surgical system is helping reduce pain and speed recovery for patients undergoing spine surgery at Norton Healthcare. Enhanced imaging and GPS-like technology increase the accuracy of screw placement. Robot guidance allows for smaller incisions, leading to less pain and faster recovery. Compared to patients who underwent singlelevel lumbar fusion and had an average hospital stay of three and a half days, patients who undergo robotic spine surgery almost always leave the hospital the next day.

JULENE B. SAMUELS, MD, FACS

Aesthetic Plastic Surgeon Dr. Julene Samuels is a double board-certified surgeon with extensive, specialized training in cosmetic surgery of the face, breast and body. She believes the best results are maintained over time through the use of specific surgical techniques, coupled with additional state-of-the-art nonsurgical or minimally invasive rejuvenative options. For each patient, she outlines a plan that is customized specifically to age-related concerns, lifestyle, budget and recovery needs. “I love making patients happy and treating them over time. The rewards of this continuity of care from patients who place their utmost trust in me is a real pleasure and a labor of love,” she says. She and her staff strive for a five-star patient experience that makes patients feel like friends and family. “Being a surgeon is who I am and being an expert in the art of cosmetic surgery is my passion. It’s a privilege to work with my staff and to serve my patients,” she says. Dr. Samuels spends a great deal of time doing clinical research for various implant, skin care and device manufacturers and points to the results of this additional work being the increased benefit to her patients. “My clinical trials and conversations with engineers help perfect tomorrow’s options and challenge me to think in ways that will dictate optimal treatments,” she adds. She has learned to be comfortable with never quite feeling she has achieved the ideal balance in her life and admits to being a perfectionist who tries to remain humble knowing that there’s always opportunity for personal learning. Much of her peace and happiness come through remaining physically active, making special time for her family and relying on stress relievers such as workouts, riding horses, yoga, cycling or watching her daughters compete in their demanding sport of eventing. 6400 Dutchmans Parkway, Louisville www.awomanstouchmd.com

MATTHEW ROGERS, MD; STEPHANIE ALTOBELLIS, MD Internal Medicine, Kentucky One Health Signature MD

The patient-centered Kentucky One Health Signature MD Concierge Internal Medicine practice focuses on taking time to listen to patients and guide them through today’s health care system. The practice charges an annual fee in addition to accepting insurance and co-pays. Dr. Stephanie Altobellis and Dr. Matthew Rogers develop long-term relationships with their patients, establishing a continuing dialogue about the patients’ health and making a demonstrated difference in their well-being. “Two of our most frustrating challenges are dealing with electronic medical records and the increasing influence in the healthcare industry by people who are not interested in improving patient care,” says Dr. Altobellis. Inspiration for the physicians comes from two primary sources. For Dr. Rogers, it is his love of learning. Dr. Altobellis practiced internal medicine with her father, Dr. Charles Smith, for nine years. Dr. Rogers also practiced with Dr. Smith. She credits her father with teaching her the art of medicine and is proud to walk in his footsteps. “I love being a mother to my two sons, ages 19 and 22. It has always been a struggle to raise children, have a career and take care of myself. I feel meditation and yoga help me stay balanced.” Among her interests outside of medicine are downhill skiing, cycling and gardening. Like most everyone, doctors struggle with maintaining a healthy balance between their work and personal lives. Dr. Rogers is not an exception to that dilemma. “I’m a multi-instrumentalist musician. I love sports, cooking and being with my family,” he says. Another of his coping mechanisms is his learned ability to leave work at the office. 6420 Dutchmans Parkway, Suite 165, Louisville | signaturemd.com/altobellis signature.com/rogers

BETHANY COX SNIDER, MD VP & Chief Medical Officer Hospice and Palliative Medicine

Dr. Bethany Cox Snider leads the Hosparus Health medical team comprising 14 physicians and 8 nurse practitioners, who provide expert hospice and palliative care to people facing serious and life-limiting illness. Her priority, Dr. Snider says, is “to ensure that my community benefits from the care and services of Hosparus Health for my lifetime and beyond.” Today, more Americans are living with serious illnesses than ever before, but many are unaware of the resources available. Snider says she wants people to know that Hosparus Health offers so much more than hospice care in the last days or weeks of life. “We have a robust grief counseling program, a pediatric program, an outpatient palliative consult service and a home-based advanced illness care program.” “Utilizing Hosparus Health is not about giving up but about empowering families to choose the care that optimizes their quality of life based on their own goals and values,” adds Dr. Snider. “I want every family to know what is available to them, and we want to walk with them through this journey wherever they call home.” Her patients and families inspire her every day, Snider says. “This work has truly impacted my life for the better, and I feel extremely blessed to be in this profession.” 3532 Ephraim McDowell Drive, Louisville www.hosparushealth.org | 800-264-0521

The opportunity to meet new, interesting people and knowing that he can positively affect their lives inspires him every day. “Keeping work and personal life balanced is so important! I want to make dentistry comfortable, reliable and enjoyable for them,” says Dr. Bunch. Dr. Brown elaborates, “I love seeing a patient who is fearful gain the confidence to move forward with the care they need. I believe when we change people’s smiles, we help change their lives by building self-confidence.” Both doctors are committed to pursuing continuing education so that they are able to provide patients with the most effective treatments that reflect new products, techniques and advancements that are emerging in dentistry. As a third-generation dentist, Dr. Bunch is motivated by the tradition and legacy left by his grandfather and father. Dr. Brown has an equally compelling personal story. “I’m inspired by my grandmother who survived tuberculosis and breast cancer, raised 12 children and through it all loved to dance. I incorporated what I learned from him and others into my practice and have been treating my patients, as well as ones referred from other local doctors, for all levels of jaw pain ever since.” Away from the office, Dr. Kessler enjoys hiking and biking with his family, participating with his kids’ sports teams, and traveling. 10515 Meeting Street, Suite 104, Prospect, www.Vdentalcare.com

SURESH NAIR, MD; SARITA NAIR, MD Master Injector/ Internal Medicine, BodyRx Louisville

BodyRx is a medical spa that offers services from Botox to massage to facials. Hallmarks of the medical and aesthetic practice are accessibility, cutting-edge knowledge and technology, compassion and a warm smile. TOPS talked to Drs. Sarita Nair and Suresh Nair about the challenges they face and the rewards they receive in their practice. Utilizing the latest scientific advancements, they are able to influence the wellness and balance in the lives of their patients. “The positive outcomes we are able to achieve for our patients are the most fulfilling rewards we could ever experience,” they said as they discussed the myriad challenges they have encountered in the past and continue to face. Among them are completing more than a decade of education and incurring significant debt to finance that education. However, those issues pale in comparison to the satisfaction gained from their work. They are inspired by the trailblazers, researchers, scientists, inventors and the many individuals whose approach to medicine bring energy and light to their practice. “Medicine is our life. The lines between personal and professional are blurred as our work never stops, even when we are home. Our personal life is part and parcel of our professional existence. It’s easier that way, and we are blessed by a family that embraces that situation,” say Drs. Nair. 601 S. Hurstbourne, Louisville www.bodyrxlouisville.com

CHET MAYS, MD

Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, CaloAesthetics Plastic Surgery Center & Calospa CaloAesthetics Plastic Surgery Center is a fullyaccredited, AAAASF, center that performs outpatient cosmetic surgical procedures. Calospa Rejuvenation Center performs non-surgical aesthetic procedures and relaxing day spa services. “Plastic surgery is the most innovative field of medicine. The artistic, individual approach I take to each plastic surgery case is stimulating and enjoyable. In plastic surgery, there are really no algorithms to follow. The ability to do surgical procedures all over the body is what attracted me to this noble profession,” says Chet Mays, M.D. He is alarmed by the number of non-plastic surgeons who perform cosmetic procedures at non-accredited centers, which can lead to unsafe and “botched” procedures. He reminds people to always inquire whether a doctor is board certified in his or her respective field. For plastic surgery, certification is provided by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. “Being the best I can be at what I do is why I went to school for many years. This commitment to my art and craft is what propels me professionally. Seeing the patients’ excitement at their post-operative visit is exhilarating and rewarding,” he says. Achieving the best surgical result is based on his skills as well as the work by more than 50 staff who help manage and educate the patient throughout the entire surgical experience. He regards life as a balancing act, noting that as we grow older, most individuals assume more responsibility but also become better at managing that responsibility. “Staying active and healthy are keys to a long, happy life. Being able to take off my plastic surgeon hat when I leave the office and put on the dad and husband hats are the way I stay balanced in life. There is some crossover because all of my children have told me they want to be a plastic surgeon.” 2341 Lime Kiln Lane, Louisville www.caloaesthetics.com

ORA FRANKEL, MD Psychiatrist, The Couch Immediate Mental Health Care

The Couch Immediate Mental Health Care is a new treatment model for providing acute psychiatric services during a mental health crisis. The initial goal is to stabilize patients so that they can avoid the need for hospitalization or emergency room visits. Following that, The Couch offers treatment, including medication management and psychotherapy, and referrals to community resources, when appropriate. “Treating and educating patients and their families about mental health and providing support are some of the most gratifying aspects of our role as mental health providers,” says Ora Frankel, MD. ehind a towering Victorian on a bustling city street, there’s a secret sanctuary. A sparkling pool, elegantly appointed outdoor living room and lush landscaping provide a spa-like retreat for Dr. Shiao Woo, chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Louisville School of Medicine and John ShawWoo, founder of GFoundation Inc. This carefully-designed extension of their indoor living space is part of their commitment to overall wellness and well-being. The busy couple balance their demanding professional schedules with rigorous fitness routines. “Even though we work out with trainers a few times a week, I love to take a daily swim after coming home from a long day of work,” says Dr. Woo. “It is not only relaxing but is also a great aerobic exercise.” The stunning space is more than an open air fitness studio; it’s also the perfect place for the two to unwind. “We are able to relax, entertain with friends and share family time with our three little dapple dachshunds Ginger-Blu, Pepper and Sage,” says John. “The backyard in Old Louisville has turned out to be our little piece of heaven.”

Out is In

There was a time when designers often talked about bringing the outdoors in. Now, it’s all about bringing the indoors out. Who loves summer? BY ALLISON JONES PHOTOS BY TIM FURLONG JR.

R

emember when patios and decks were furnished with a table and chairs and an umbrella? Not anymore. Now indoor essentials like kitchens, televisions and comfy furniture are elevating outdoor spaces into open air rooms that further enhanced by special effect extras like fire tables and water features. There’s a trick to taking the comforts of indoors outside and striking that perfect balance between comfort and clutter. So, I chatted with Karista Hannah, owner and interior designer of Set the Stage (www.setthestage.com) who decorated this beautiful outdoor space in Poplar Woods initially for Homearama and then, for a client. Her insights can help you get more pleasure out of the living areas beyond the walls of the place you call home.

The “Blueprint” Some great outdoor rooms were simply built for success. “I collaborated with Caliber Homes where we found a plan online and tweaked it,” says Hannah. “The homeowners purchased the house early in the process, but the overall size and design of the outdoor area had already been decided. They loved it as it had an outdoor kitchen, fireplace, along with some other amenities. They splurged for outdoor space heaters that are mounted on the ceiling. We selected all of the paint, lighting, and décor, so it really reflects their style. They chose all of the appliances for the outdoor kitchen as well. It is one of the most impressive and largest outdoor spaces that I have tackled. Visitors during the Homearama tours loved it.”

Living Room-Worthy Furniture People are creating outdoor “rooms” in an effort to expand their indoor living spaces. It’s not only an attractive addition; it’s also a smart way for homeowners to extend their square footage. With that being said, it’s easy to blow the budget on a few big-ticket items. Spending strategically will help your money go farther. “I usually suggest that clients splurge on the staple pieces, like your sofa, sectional, accent chairs and end tables,” says Hannah. “If you buy good quality then you could have it last for many years.” This outdoor space is completely covered, so it is enjoyable no matter what the weather brings. A modern pendant chandelier illuminates the long table surrounded by accent chairs that invites dining al fresco. Sconces reside on the painted brick wall showcasing the outdoor kitchen.

ComplEmentary Colors Where do you begin when choosing your outdoor color scheme? Karista suggests staying neutral. “We normally try and start with neutral furnishings and then we add color with pillows and rugs along with accessories,” she says. “I do tend to lean away from bright colors for the main cushions. As with anything, they may fade or perhaps, the homeowner gets tired of the color. It’s much less expensive to change out a pillow or rug that you grow bored with than all the cushions of a sofa.”

Hot Trends Whether located on a porch or outside on a patio, a fire feature is a natural draw for people to gather along with creating defined spaces. “Outdoor fire pits have become very popular,” says Hannah. “Along with outdoor fireplaces, many people want the cozy, casual, lounge space along with an area for eating as well.” The owners chose a built in fireplace that features a flat screen television above the rustic mantel that is the ideal spot to relax and unwind. 

Flatboat Bourbon is a collaboration between Barton 1792 Distillery and Liquor Barn that celebrates a unique piece of whiskey history. In the late 1700’s, skillful adventurers guided flatboats through the small river ways, connecting farmers and traders from the newly formed colonies to areas as far reaching as New Orleans. With whiskey in high demand, an overnight stop in Kentucky was a must, for both the crew and their pocketbooks. Join us in a toast to the brave men of the river and the historic Flatboats. Style and Sustainability The buzz is building around a plant-based restaurant in, of all places, Butchertown. Naïve’s farm-to-table menu and sustainability-first ethos is winning over vegans and carnivores alike. BY NANCY MILLER • PHOTOS BY DANNY ALEXANDER

C

atherine MacDowell and husband Michael Kerrigan found so many things to like about Louisville that they made the life-changing decision to move from Washington, D.C. to Louisville. She had built out restaurant concepts for famed chef and restaurateur José Andrés and Michael was a successful engineer. “When we met eight years ago, we had a strong passion for sustainability and farmto-table food. Due to the tobacco buyouts, Louisville has a lot of local microfarmers that other neighboring big cities don’t have. That led us to believe the city was a perfect place for Naive,” says MacDowell. The Butchertown restaurant, opened in April, features a plant-based menu with

meat options. The interior’s fresh, urbane coziness reflects a design-forward, innovative use of sustainable building materials. “We call ourselves vegetable centric to put forth the local farmers and to have them on the front lines. We see that as the most direct way to impact our community,” she says. Chef M. Alan Henry, a graduate of the Culinary Institute in New York, trained under Michelin star chefs before he began creating Naive’s menu that is devoid of any meat-based sauces. Meat is an accoutrement, like garnish on a plate. MacDowell says the menu is designed to appeal to omnivores, carnivores, vegans, vegetarians, followers of the Paleo diet

and individuals who opt for gluten or dairy-free dishes. “We don’t cook with any butter or cream, but instead infuse other flavors and highlight local produce. We use New Age techniques as we bring together Chef Henry’s French background with my playful side,” says MacDowell. Highlights of the menu are ceviche, Spanish garlic shrimp, curry bowl, crispy kimchi fried rice and spring pea Alfredo. A Small Plate of sweet corn arepas (slowbraised lion’s mane and oyster mushrooms, fermented black beans, cotija, pineapple slaw and avocado crema) is as

intriguing as the Hippie Circle (carrots three ways, ricotta, dor-bee-tos, lavender-lemon yogurt, quinoa, feta and candied pecans.) Bar Manager Nicole Stipp’s kicked up cocktail menu entices with a Sexy Elvis: “We washed bourbon with peanut butter and now you have a boozy pb&j sandwich in a glass.” Sounds crazy enough to be crazy good, no? Healthy kombucha was made jazzy in the Kombucha Drank – gin, honey syrup and lavender lemonade kombucha. Welcome to Louisville, Naive. We love you already. 

Taste Explosion The space that formerly housed chic, legendary Asiatique has become home to an exciting global fusion culinary experience. Flavour may be a newcomer, it’s already heating up the Bardstown Road dining scene. BY NANCY MILLER • PHOTOS BY DANNY ALEXANDER

W

hile this is the group’s first restaurant concept, Doug Bibby, Steve Pennington, Elliott Horne and Clarence Benboe have years of experience hosting events in Louisville. Only a few weeks ago, they jumped into the fire of competition that is the Louisville dining scene to open Flavour in the space that formerly housed Asiatique. They brought on board Chef Kennedy “China Man” Thomas. And he brought a repertoire that has been simmering to a full-blown explosion of flavors for more than 40 years. Born in Trinidad and Tobago and raised in the Virgin Islands, he has worked in restaurants in New York, New Jersey, Canada, Jamaica and Texas. He literally brings a world of experience to this new endeavor. Thomas’s menu deftly weaves Caribbean and Creole with Southern. Where else can you follow conch fritters with jambalaya, a renowned spicy Creole dish that’s a mixture of smoked chicken, andouille sausage and shrimp? Come to Flavour for the Trinidadian-style oxtail stew but don’t leave without sharing with your dining partner the maque choux, a Louisiana dish of braised corn, green pepper, onions

108 TOPS LOUISVILLE | July 2018

and tomatoes. Before you go all out for the southern macaroni and cheese, forget geographic boundaries and dive into baby back ribs, and jerk chicken and shrimp. “I use many different herbs and spices. That’s how the name Flavour came about,” says Thomas. Not only is he not shy about spicing up his food, he doesn’t hesitate to divulge his favorite dishes: oxtails, curry chicken, baby back ribs and tips, shrimp and crawfish étouffée, and shrimp and grits. Don’t ask him to pare down the list of favorites. Asking him to do so probably would only lead to adding a few more. And for good reason, as anyone who becomes a Flavour guest will attest. One Flavour favorite is soon replaced by another. Thomas will be the likely recipient of hugs and kisses from vegetarians when they taste his curry vegetables stir fry, black bean cake and rasta pasta. We’re sure some people can resist one of the

island-themed cocktails, in favor of a classic, but we’re not sure we want to be one of those people. An island treat in a glass is a festive way to say “Cheers” to Thomas and his flavors. You may not have been lucky enough to have been invited to Flavours’ Friends and Family opening event during Derby week but stop by for dinner and you’ll make a new BFF. 

A Cajun Accent After closing up shop across the river, Paul Skulas brings New Orleans-style flavors to his new home in Germantown. BY NANCY MILLER • PHOTOS BY DANNY ALEXANDER

F

or Paul Skulas, it made sense to work where he likes to play. So he closed Portage, across the river, and opened Couvillion here-- in Germantown. “I spend most of my free time in this area. Most of my friends live within walking distance. There’s so much going on here,” says Skulas. Couvillion is French for a rich fish stew. “It goes back to the backbone of Cajun and Creole food that has French, southern and seafood influences,” he adds. His Couvillion is made with catfish, a fish closely associated with southern cuisine. Skulas took his management team to New Orleans in February to sample couvillion at several restaurants. Catfish was the fish of choice for many of the chefs. “My wife and I go to New Orleans every year for a quick getaway. I wanted the people who were going to be the face of my restaurant to have a reference point, to know what they were talking about, to have personal experiences in flavors, and to have memories they could draw on. We hope to do that once a year,” he says. Couvillon’s motto is “So good it’d make a rabbit smack a bear.” Say what? The phrase comes from one of the owner’s grandfather who often bandied it about. Skulas thought its unique quirkiness fits the character of the restaurant. Creating the menu involved a bit of trial and error. “I tell everybody, if you want to judge the restaurant, order the gumbo (and the duck Creole.) The Gumbo Z’Herbes is a completely vegetarian gumbo that has seven to nine types of greens and a basic dark roux. I have had a lot of gumbos. I did chicken and andouille gumbo the first week. It was alright but the meat was kind of a second note, just there. But in the new version, the greens are so robust and have a hearty, intense flavor,” he says. Sharing the menu with the gumbo and duck are fried boudin (pork and rice sausage), white bean soup, trout and grits, braised brisket and smothered pork chops. Dave Tuney was the mastermind behind most of the cocktails although Skulas came up with his own, the Young Buck, made with bourbon, citrus, bitters and Ale-8-One. “We got over the first few weeks hump of drop dead exhaustion and worked everyone into the ground,” says Skulas. “Now we’re getting into a normal lifestyle and I’m having fun.” 

Splashing W For Cash It’s the fundraiser that brings families down to the waterfront for some oldfashioned summer fun. Norton Children’s Hospital’s Splash ‘N Dash turns a day filled with water slides, splash zones and races into support for The Children’s Hospital Foundation. BY MEGAN MCDERMOTT

ho’s looking for a perfect mid-summer family outing? At this point, you’ve been to the pool dozens of times. You’ve done picnics, barbecues, backyard parties. How can you get the family to go outside and enjoy another summer day outdoors together? The solution is water. An even better solution is water plus family fun plus a charitable cause. And that’s Norton Children’s Hospital’s Fouth annual Splash ‘N’ Dash, which takes place on Saturday, August 4. The event was created in honor of former Norton Children’s Hospital patient, 15-year-old Max Gilpin, who passed away after suffering from a heat stroke during football practice in August of 2008. Max’s

mother wants to remember her son and the lives of other patients from the Children’s hospital through this wonderful event. Lynnie Meyer, Sr Vice President and Chief Development Officer at Norton Healthcare says, “Splash ‘n’ Dash is one of the most fun family events the Children’s Hospital Foundation hosts. It offers families an opportunity to make some great memories, all while supporting the patients of Norton Children’s Hospital and honoring the memory of former patient, Max Gilpin.” Lynnie adds, “This event has seen incredible growth since its inception, most notably with last year’s transition to the new Waterfront Park location. We look forward to a great turnout this year!”

All of the funds raised will benefit Norton Children’s Hospital. Splash ‘N’ Dash participants also get to designate their donations to a specific area of their choice within the Children’s Hospital, whether that be the cancer unit, NICU or other hospital programs. Once registered for the event, participants will receive a fundraising page where they can connect with friends and family to encourage donations. This year at Splash ‘N’ Dash, Norton Children’s Hospital has set a goal of raising $100,000 which can be achieved through the caring Kentuckiana community. 

Where Kids Come First Kosair has long been known as the charity devoted to medically-fragile children. But as the organization’s first new president in twenty-one years, Keith Inman is hoping to bring a broader mission—of helping all children in need—into sharp focus. BY PEYTON FROULA

F

or over 90 years, Kosair Charities has had one primary mission — helping children in need. From the medically fragile, to the special needs, to the abused and neglected, Kosair Charities has made a mission of giving every child the chance to lead a normal life. The largest children’s charity organization in the history of Kentucky and Southern Indiana, Kosair has had president Randy Coe at the helm for 21 years. After his long history with the organization, his recent decision to retire and hand the reins over to Keith Inman, a longtime fundraiser at the University of Louisville, marks an important milestone in the organization’s history. As the new president, Inman plans to take the respected charity in a new and bigger direction and he has the credentials to do it. An Elizabethtown native, Inman moved to Louisville to attend the University of Louisville for his undergraduate degree. After graduation, he worked setting up alumni centers all across the country. Inman was quick to rise through

116 TOPS LOUISVILLE | July 2018

the ranks; by 1986, he was the executive director for the Cardinal Athletic Fund. In 1992, Inman took a job at the University of Maryland to become the associate director for advancement. In 1999, Inman was named the executive director of the Jewish Hospital Foundation, and the vice president of Jewish Hospital and St. Mary’s Healthcare. In 2006, he returned to Louisville as vice president for the University of Louisville’s advancement, where he would personally raise $20-$50 million every year. It was Inman’s impressive statistics and his commitment to the children of our community that made Kosair Charities’ board of directors take notice. When asked about the new direction he plans to take Kosair, Mr. Inman indicated Kosair would be focusing on ways to create a larger impact on the Commonwealth. “There’s no place like Louisville,” Mr. Inman mentioned about his chosen home, “It is such a generous community.” As the new president, Mr. Inman and his team at Kosair have created a strategic plan to help the foundation expand their ability

to meet their children’s needs. Mr. Inman aims to work with more philanthropies and continue to raise additional funds to extend Kosair’s depth and reach. “I wish people realized that Kosair Charities is a safety net for so many organizations and kids in this community,” Mr. Inman said when asked about his goals for the organization, “People do not fully recognize the impact of Kosair.” While they have always provided support to the medically fragile children in our community, Kosair Charities also extends its reach to children suffering from abuse or neglect, and children with unequal access to education. Mr. Inman emphasized the optimistic attitude that was crucial to Kosair’s success, and the charity’s continuous long-term goal to one day be able to help all children in need. “We want Kosair Charities to continue to change the community for the better,” Mr. Inman said during his interview with TOPS, “We won’t stop until we see a world where all children are safe, secure, happy, and leading a normal life.” 

Defeating Her Demons A self-described “regular person who loves to sing,” local jazz sensation Carly Johnson has triumphed over her anxieties and created a dynamite new sound in the process. BY ROCKO JEROME

C

arly Johnson is living the musician’s dream: She’s made it her primary profession. Five nights a week, she sings jazz around town at some of our finest venues. As far back as she can remember, from a Fisher-Price record player blasting Sleeping Beauty’s “Mary Costa” on 45, through a grade school obsession with The Beatles, to a reckoning with the potent sound of Etta James, music has always been her passion. Her only problem was that she was terrified to step on a stage.

Carly was too passionate about singing to let it go, so she forced herself to volunteer for a high school talent show. “I gathered up every single bit of guts that I had,” she says, “I pretended that I was watching it all happen to someone else and not actually doing it myself, and I just went for it.” In a wild two-song set built of emotional whiplash, she performed the classically laid back “At Last” followed by the aggressive “Crazy On You,” as made famous by the Wilson sisters of Heart. “Learning about Heart was important to me,” she says. “I loved Aerosmith, and then there were these ladies who could rock every bit as hard. I was hooked. It went over very well. The crowd went wild. It was on after that.”

Carly’s drive to improve herself, to keep building on her strength in singing, was uncompromising. She learned sax, mainly in order to increase her breath control, and sang in chamber choirs throughout high school. She went to the University of Performing Arts in Philadelphia and studied Jazz performance and opera— just to broaden her horizons. The power and scope of her voice took on epic proportions. She can burn like fire just as easily as she can flow and crash like water. She returned to Louisville with the goods, unafraid to use them. She began building a reputation as a versatile and captivating live performer. Gigs started to line up fabulously. She knew that she had it all down pat when she could do her thing for a crowd with just one other person on guitar as accompaniment—usually with Louisville’s own virtuoso, Craig Wagner. Having conquered the butterflies in her belly, she then went the other direction entirely: “I ♥ Heart” wasn’t just a tribute band that she created, it was an event: a group of great Louisville women from various backgrounds brought into a packed house at the Mercury Ballroom on a chilly Valentine’s Day for charity. The

pseudo-supergroup sang together, trading off leads, and righteously doing justice to the songs of Heart... all helmed by Carly, who made it all happen. It was so much fun that they did it two more times. Carly’s reputation grew. The idea to record originals began to percolate. With funding from an LAbased talent collective called New Neighborhood, Carly and her friend, Charlotte Littlehales, started writing a set of very personal songs for her new EP on CD, Demons. Sonically, the work sounds like pure Muscle Shoals era Soul/R&B- that brassy, cruising style of music that jazz lovers can just never get enough of. Lyrically, it’s a personal tale of triumph. The title tune is about those monsters we all have inside of us, the kinds that get in our way and hold us back, prevent us from growing as we should. “My song ‘I Don’t Care’ is about that too,” Carly observes, “all about being trapped in your head and how to fight your way out.” Altogether, she’s saying that she’s here, she’s ready, and it feels amazing. Ladies and gentlemen, Carly Johnson has arrived. 

David Mattingly When you’ve reported around the world, earned both Emmy and Peabody Awards and witnessed history in the making, what do you do for an encore? In David Mattingly’s case, you come home. The newest WAVE 3 anchor talks to Rocko Jerome about his fascinating life and joyful return. BY ROCKO JEROME PHOTOS BY DANNY ALEXANDER

T

he die was cast for David Mattingly very early. As a kid in Buechel during the sixties and seventies, one of his greatest joys was listening to his transistor radio, all the way from early mornings to late nights, nestled under his pillow. One of his favorite broadcasters was the incomparable Milton Metz. “It was a different time,” David says. “Milton treated callers with patience and respect regardless of their points of view. He asked good questions and was always interested in what the callers had to say. What I learned from his example served me well throughout my career.”

At age 9, he made his television debut on the Hayloft Hoedown, a locally produced music and variety series that was fun for the whole family, and still celebrated today by every Louisville Baby Boomer. Host and Louisville legend Randy Atcher asked him to tell a joke: “If all the cars in the United States were painted pink, what would you have?” the young Mattingly asked. The answer was “a pink carnation.” When the infamous 1974 tornado outbreak struck, young David found comfort in listening to Dick Gilbert report upon the dark day’s

events. “We huddled under the basement steps with my dog and my brother,” David says. “I remember listening to the radio and hearing helicopter pilot Dick Gilbert deliver vivid descriptions of the tornado hitting the fairgrounds, the neighborhoods and Cherokee Park. Looking back, that was probably the moment I began to truly understand the importance of delivering information and telling the story. We all felt a sense of loss, but somehow, listening to that even-tempered voice on the radio offered a sense of comfort.” David’s roots in the bluegrass run deep. A seventh-generation Kentuckian and a fifth-generation Louisvillian, he remembers the torrent of adolescent angst that erupted when his dad’s job transferred him to Philadelphia and the family landed in Voorhees, New Jersey.

together ever since...another one of the best decisions I ever made.” In the time between, David graduated with a degree in journalism from the University of Alabama and the day after his last exam, he found himself reporting for CBS affiliate WCFT in Tuscaloosa. David would soon roll over to the NBC affiliate WVTM in Birmingham, where he would stay on for a full decade. He reported on environmental issues, producing a series of documentaries that would take him deep into the Amazon rainforests and win him his first Emmy awards.

“At the time, I was not happy,” he says. “I loved going to high school at Seneca and the idea of leaving the only home I had ever known was a little hard to accept. But things actually worked out better than I could have ever expected.” The first day at his new high school in New Jersey, David met the girl he would eventually marry. “We were just 15 at the time but I knew she was special. Greta and I marched next to each other in band and I always had my eye on her. Sadly, I couldn’t work up the nerve to ask her out until our 10 year class reunion,” he said laughing. “We’ve been

in Pennsylvania at his mother-in-law’s house, about to go fishing on September 11, 2001 when his attention was removed from his leisurely pursuits. Only about an hour from Shanksville, David became the first national news reporter on the scene after the fourth plane went down at the edge of a corn field. Like Dick Gilbert had done for him all those years before, David would bring a calm, informative voice to a horrifically chaotic situation.

120 TOPS LOUISVILLE | July 2018

After 9/11 David became a National Correspondent, traveling all around the world. The events on the world stage that David would cover from the scene are staggering to contemplate. From live reporting in dangerous hurricanes to grueling presidential campaigns including the historic Gore/Bush recount, David concentrated on bringing a sense of humanity to every high profile story he has ever covered.

About a year ago, his heart pulled him back to Louisville, where he has joined the WAVE 3 family. “I still get emotional about it,” he said. “It’s thrilling to know I’m walking the same hallways and anchoring in the same studio as the people I grew up watching like Livingston Gilbert, Tom Wills and ‘Uncle Ed’ Kallay,” says David. “Whoever said you can’t go home again, never grew up here. Coming home after all these years was one of the best decisions I ever made.”

A PORTABLE FITNESS ROUTINE

Now – July 29

2X At 58, David keeps in great shape almost entirely through a moderate diet and cardio exercise. He is an avid hiker and, through his travels, has climbed in some very exotic locations. One of those excursions taught him a life lesson he’ll never forget:

Kroger Fuel Point * Weekends

“I raised my arms in a Rocky-like pose of triumph. I had just survived the climb to Dead Woman’s Pass, elevation nearly 14 thousand feet and the highest point on my trek of the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. It was exhilarating. But just thirty minutes later I wasn’t smiling. Oxygen deprivation had set in and my legs felt like they weighed a thousand pounds. I plodded down the steep decline into the next valley wondering with each step if my knees would give out and I would collapse and roll the next few miles to the bottom. Fortunately, with frequent stops and after eating and drinking everything I had in my backpack, I made it safely. The thrill I felt at the top became a lesson in humility. When it comes to hiking, the old adage is true, as in life as it is in hiking — it’s not the destination, it’s the journey.” 

Forecastle Fest ival:

A MUSIC-LOVER’S GUIDE Our city’s eclectic music festival draws performers from all genres and categories. In-house fan and sometimes-critic Rocko Jerome offers a cheat sheet of can’t-miss performances for anyone heading to this celebrated summer spectacle.

I

t’s one of the biggest annual concerts in the country and a source of pride for Louisville. Every year, music lovers are beside themselves with excitement and anticipation, and this year’s lineup will not disappoint. Although a diverse group of artists is always to be expected at this festival, the class of 2018 includes some of the most beloved and widely recognized names in music today. Here’s a guide to a few of the very best.

Jenny Lewis Razor-sharp lyricist and stunning melodist Jenny Lewis’ most recent album, The Voyager, might just be the most powerful of her life. Inspired by a time of tribulation, including the loss of her estranged father and breakup of her band, Rilo Kiley, she took time to decompress and compose a series of personal songs that all speak to a tremendous universal truth that we can all appreciate and reckon with together.

Arcade Fire Chris Stapleton Perhaps personifying the eclectic nature of Forecastle better than any other musician, Chris Stapleton is a songwriter who has written songs for artists as diverse as Adele, Brad Paisley, and Sheryl Crow. He’s penned five number one hits including “Never Wanted Nothing More” recorded by Kenny Chesney, “Drink A Beer” made famous by Luke Bryan, and “Love’s Gonna Make It Alright” performed by George Strait. He’s the lead vocalist for the powerhouse Bluegrass band The SteelDrivers, and with his potent stage performance, he’s likely to be one of the biggest hits at this year’s show.

Even now, as they are about to end their second decade together, it’s hard not to think of the consistently fresh and exciting Arcade Fire as a new group on the scene. With a continually evolving and energetic sound, the multi-award winning group (including two Grammy wins) might just be one of the biggest bands going today. Fresh off of a huge world tour, they have been described as the greatest live band on the planet. In a setting such as Forecastle, they are sure to shine bright.

Modest Mouse Indie darlings Modest Mouse have become experts at maintaining a level of success and acclaim while staying true to what ďŹ rst attracted their fans: an aural oddity in songs brimming with emotion that defy categorization. In just six albums over 26 years, the band has become the bar against which all similarly quirky groups are measured, and are an institution for those who enjoy music that challenges their perceptions.

Father John Misty

Louisville Leopard Percussionists This incredibly charming group of over 60 kids, ages 7 to16, from all over Louisville produces a massive sound certain to give you chills. Since 1993, versions of the Leopards have played all over the country and appeared on the albums of artists like My Morning Jacket and Ndugu Chancler. Seeing them perform is always a treat, and at an event the size of Forecastle, it will be absolutely exhilarating.

Anyone who tells you that modern music is never deep or contemplative hasn’t heard Father John Misty. Singer-songwriter Josh Tilman wears his conscience on his sleeve in extremely literate songs about the challenges of living every day with the foibles of the human condition; his songs are an articulated roadmap of all the miles between contentment and despair. Whether at his piano or standing on stage, his gentle voice and thoughtful lyrics add up to a kind of catharsis that you would not necessarily expect in the context of a performance for a mass audience, and yet it works beautifully.

IF YOU GO

Forecastle takes place on July 1315th at the Louisville Waterfront. For more information, please visit forecastlefest.com.

Supermom:

Heidi Fuller Cancer may have taken her hair, her health, and her ability to bear children of her own, but for Supermom Heidi Fuller, there was so much more that cancer could not take. BY PEYTON FROULA PHOTOS BY RYAN NOLTEMEYER

F

ollowing a stage three uterine cancer diagnosis, Fuller found an inner spark that pushed her to create Awakenings, a wig consultation service in a private boutique setting. Since opening Awakenings in 2017, Fuller has donated more than $8,000 to the local cancer community. She continues to juggle her boutique service alongside the responsibilities that come with being a mother of one and stepmother of two. TOPS Louisville sat down with Heidi and her family to learn more about her inspiring story, and how she has managed to turn her ongoing cancer battle into a message of strength, support, and love.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO OPEN AWAKENINGS? I founded Awakenings Boutique because of my cancer storm. While I was faced with losing my hair due to chemotherapy, I made an appointment at a wig shop to pick out a wig. I was devastated over losing my hair and I was not looking

124 TOPS LOUISVILLE | July 2018

forward to picking out a wig. My experience while picking out my wig was even more devastating because I was met with coldness and wasn’t given guidance or proper information about determining the best wig for me. When I returned home, I cried in my bedroom for four hours.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY We are a blended family that loves to laugh and enjoy life. I married my husband in 2015 and with that I inherited two beautiful stepdaughters. Kalee and Taylor were 5 and 7 when David and I married. Their biological mother is an angel. She accepted me as Kalee and Taylor’s stepmom and she always put her girls first. We would all sit together at games. We combine birthday and graduation parties. We were all a team. We show the girls that not everything in life works out, but you choose to make the best of it, and you choose love over all else.

Then something magical happened! Seven months out of remission, God gave me a baby girl. A beautiful baby girl who was not from my body, not from my blood. A baby girl who now calls me mommy. Mya came into our lives December of 2016. She was two years old, and David and I made the choice to “temporarily” take in this little girl so that she would not be thrown into the system. Prior to cancer, I would have never taken in a baby girl as I didn’t have the time or desire to raise a baby. God knew that I had to go through muddy waters— a cancer storm— for me to become the person I am today. A person who is going to raise Mya to be a “Warrior Woman.”

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR CAREER? I have a very humbling career owning Awakenings Boutique. Women trust me to give them their “new hair”. Through Awakenings, I am given the opportunity to give hope and light to people who are

battling “the storms of life.” I am given the opportunity to change how the alternative-hair industry treats people; to make it “fun” and to show these women respect and dignity.

I have been given the opportunity to lead by example and to do things in a different way. If my customers are not going to have hair, then I am not going to have hair, so I shave my head. To show these women respect and dignity, I help women take their own hair before cancer has the chance to do so by shaving heads in the store, and in the homes of my customers.

Just like our beautiful blended family, Awakenings is not the norm. I choose love over greed. I will never sacrifice someone’s happiness over a sale.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE CAREER AND FAMILY? My time is very limited these days. Awakenings is my heart and soul and when I am in the boutique, I give all of myself all day long. There are times that I will be in the boutique from 8 a.m. to 1a.m. That being said, every minute, every second spent away from Awakenings is with my family. With my stepdaughters, and with most teenagers and kids in college, it’s more challenging to balance time with them, so I must be creative. I find ways to pull Kalee and Taylor into Awakenings. Taylor works for me, so we have one-onone time working in the store. With Kalee, I hope to bring her in one my special projects with Awakenings so that we have more one-on-one time together.

DO YOU TRY TO SHARE ANY ASPECTS OF YOUR WORK WITH YOUR FAMILY? I try to share every aspect of Awakenings with my children. Mya knows Mommy does not have hair and that Mommy gives hair to girls who don’t have hair. I bring Mya to work with me. Taylor works for me. She is 18 and she observes and helps me with wig fittings. Taylor sees women who come in broken and leave with hope and confidence. I lean on my husband for advice. He is the only one who can ground me. I share the magic that happens within Awakenings.

DO YOU HAVE ANY TIME FOR HOBBIES? Not really. I love to drink wine. I love to watch trashy TV when I can, I love to go to the pool and I love pizza!

WHAT VALUES DO YOU TRY TO MODEL FOR YOUR CHILDREN? Have courage and be kind. Real beauty is on the inside. Surround yourself with

people who will support you, empower you, and lift you up. Not all princesses have hair. The word “No” is not an option when you have a passion and a dream.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR PROUDEST ACCOMPLISHMENTS? My family. My husband, daughter and two stepdaughters. I am so proud of the women that my stepdaughters have become, and they are going to help me raise Mya to be a warrior, a kind person, a great woman!

WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE TO OTHER WOMEN WHO ARE JUGGLING CAREERS AND MOTHERHOOD? As women, we feel guilty for spending time away from our family and our children. Learn to cherish the simple moments such as giving your child a bath, taking your children to school, spending lazy Sundays on the couch holding your babies, having dinner with your family, and dates with your husband. 

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR BIGGEST TIME CHALLENGES? It is hard for me to shut down at night. My brain never stops. I never stop. My family, Awakenings, my customers, are always at the forefront of my mind. I am always thinking of ways to be better. To be a better mom, a better wife, to make Awakenings better, to support my customers, to support our cancer community, to give more of myself. Someone told me that I need to make time for myself. That’s not an option. I spent 37 years making time for myself. Now it is time for me to give all of myself to my family, to Awakenings, to our community.

HOW DO YOU HANDLE THEM? I pray. I am in constant communication with God.

GO BACK TO SCHOOL LIKE A PLANNER They spend their days creating lists and making sure everything is as organized as possible for their clients. But as mom of three kids each, their back to school season can get hectic if they don’t follow their own pro-planning tactics. Just in time for them and you, Marcella Kragel and Ina Miller outline start-early strategies for a smooth re-entry.

A

s professional event planners, we confess that our houses sometimes don’t run quite as smoothly as clients’ functions. But we strive to follow our professional mantra, “Work smarter, not harder,” especially as we approach one of the most stressful times of the year for parents: back to school season! Here’s a reality we’ve learned to live by: Planning for an event has a natural ebb and flow. It’s intense and sometimes stressful in the early stages. Then you often encounter a lull after the initial planning is done that can fool you into forgetting to nail down the details that can cause stress when your deadline gets closer. Approaching the end of summer and back to school can be like this as well. In July, back to school season looms far in the distance, but as the end of the month approaches, we can find ourselves trying to squeeze in those last moments of summer fun and the first tasks of school prep and we can often get overwhelmed. Planning early avoids that stress and lets the whole family enjoy more of summer and the beginning of fall. Here are our tips can keep it fun for the whole family.

126 TOPS LOUISVILLE | July 2018

End of Summer Strategies Schedule Fun: Plan out day trips and projects throughout the summer on a family calendar that you display prominently in your home. That way no one, will forget. It’s easy to think, “We’ll make a day trip to the Newport Aquarium this summer,” or “This would be a great time to finally redecorate my middle schooler’s room.” We often put off things at the end of the school year, imagining an abundance of time in the summer, but if you don’t create a schedule, it will often be forgotten.

Perform a recap: Take some time to print out photos, create artwork inspired by, or journal favorite memories from summer trips and adventures to add to your family archives. After every event we always hold a recap and file away materials and photos. By holding a recap, we learn and expand our portfolio for future clients. We promise this practice will help you plan for future summers, cherish memories, and possibly identify some new traditions. Unplug: As event planners and marketers we spend a lot of time on our computers and phones. Email is constant and social media is a must. When we do have down time, we try and spend some of it device free. It’s hard to do and we are not always successful, but we feel it’s important to try. While adult work continues, summer is always a great time to try to unplug with your kids. The example it sets is just as valuable as the quality time gained.

Getting Back to The Grind— with Gusto! Info Card: With younger kids we make info cards that we decorate and laminate for their back packs. It has our phone numbers and home address on it in case they need to get a hold of us or tell a teacher where they live. It’s good peace-of-mind for them until they learn everything; especially if you don’t have a house phone and they have to learn both parents’ cell phone numbers! We keep a similar document for every event with the who, what, where, when and how of every vendor associated so there is never confusion about who to call if there is a problem.

Lunch: It’s hard to plan for picky eaters, and after a long day, packing lunches can be a drag. We recommend coming up with lunch options with your child and creating a list of what he/she will and actually wants to eat. We use the same approach when helping prepare a menu for any upcoming event, and a fun tasting never hurt anyone.

Calendars: With three kids each and traveling husbands, we know how important a calendar is to a family and a business. We like to keep tabs on each other and have 2 calendars displayed in our office; one showing the year’s schedule of events and another with more detailed monthly information. Our day-to-day calendars get so crazy that we color code them and share them electronically so we always know where the other one is. At home, even with just one kid it would be hard to keeping everything straight, especially as they get older and get involved in more activities. We recommend an old-fashion calendar that can be hung in a central location, this way everyone can look at it and know who is where when. Color coding by person or activity makes it easy to glance at quickly!

Communicate and Practice: At work, we create detailed schedules for every event, and always perform sound checks, rehearsals, and run throughs so there are fewer surprises day of. This same type of prep is helpful for kids too, especially if they are starting a new school or routine. Make sure your child knows the plan going to school, getting home, and what to do in an emergency. For younger kids consider driving the route to and from school so they know what it looks like, even if they take the bus.

Labeling: Label everything! We have a large inventory of event items in storage: vases, votives, table numbers, you name it. If the tools of our trade weren’t labeled, they would be gone by now! Similarly, at the end of the school year, there is a huge pile of clothes, lunch boxes, shoes in the lost and found at school. Do yourself a favor and label all your kids’ stuff, back packs, thermos, clothes, shoes; we mean everything.

TOPS LOUISVILLE | July 2018 127

community

Making it All Fun Love notes: One of our favorite things to do is write love notes to the kids. We hide them in their backpacks, and lunch boxes as surprises throughout the day. Professionally, we don’t often write love notes to clients or vendor partners, however we do like to send thank you notes after events to let them know we appreciate their business and collaboration.

Family Breakfasts: The worst part of going back to school is returning to the hectic morning routine. Neither of us are particularly morning people, but we try and make breakfast exciting. Instead of grabbing a breakfast bar or protein shake, sit down and eat with your kids and talk about things they are looking forward to or even worried about for that day. It will also make dinner conversation easier since you will be ready with follow-ups from the breakfast table. As friends and business partners we try and informally sit and talk through approaching event days. We find that voicing concerns helps promote creative problem-solving and eases any lingering anxiety.

128 TOPS LOUISVILLE | July 2018

Shopping: We don’t often need a reason to shop, but back to school is one of the best! Kids can get nervous about a new school, teacher or classmates, but when they feel confident and excited there is no stopping them. Picking out a new backpack, new clothes, or even new shoes if you kids wear a uniform can make kids excited to be amongst their peers. In our professional experience, it’s often small decoration details that make lasting impressions. Help your kid be one of the coolest most confident kids in the class by letting them pick out something new and fun to take with them into a new year. BY MARCELLA KRAGEL AND INA MILLER
