V at the Vine The long-awaited opening of downtown’s newest social club has finally arrived. While the finishing touches are still being added on The Vine’s rooftop pool and in-house spa, the upscale restaurant is open for reservations. Led by Lexington native and award-winning Chef Cole Arimes V’s menu is seafood-forward, featuring caviar, halibut, dover sole, and lobster. The leveled-up sides for two include haricot vert almondine, molasses glazed carrots, and smoked parsnip puree, among others.

Mick’s Pot Spot Plant lovers of all abilities will love the new Mick’s Pot Spot located at 711 Allendale Dr. Owner Mickaylyn created the space to be one of inclusion, emotional safety, community and accessibility so that individuals with disabilities and their caregivers can feel accommodated and welcomed. In addition to selling plants, supplies, accessories and sensory items, the space hopes to host workshops, and provide an opportunity for artists to create and showcase their work. Sims Kids Sims Kids is a boutique-style childcare and enrichment studio opening this fall in the Woodland Arts District at 513 E. High St. The space offers curated play sessions, flexible “mini-camp” style care, and private rentals in a safe, elevated space where little ones thrive through play. The soft opening this fall will offer smaller group play sessions, capped at eight children for up to three hours on select weekdays and weekends. Families can also reserve Sims Kids for private playdates, birthdays, and gatherings.

Can summer annuals such as Hibiscus and Mandevilla in pots be brought indoors during winter and thrive again next spring/summer?

Summer has been glorious, with rains every week, until it just stopped in August and September. Yet, the tropicals in containers seem to thrive in this weather as long as they were watered regularly. It’s getting cooler, fall is here, and I’m always thinking what could be overwintered and what needs to be thrown away in the compost. Being a gardener my whole life, I tried it all, and know what is easy and what is a trainwreck! If you have a greenhouse that stays moist and lots of sun, then that will be easy, but if you have a sunroom or sunny windows in your home, it’s not the same. Forced air can blow heat onto plants, drying them out in no time. Wonder why your skin gets so dry and flaky in the winter? Imagine what that does to a tropical plant that is used to the jungle … Yet, there are a few that work and ones that don’t, and here they are: - Hibiscus: Oh gosh, don’t do it, because they will bring in White Flies and take over your home and look hideous while doing it!

- Mandevilla: They may last a month or so in the sunniest windows (but most homes have UV protection, so it won’t work anyway), but they won’t make anything but a mess to clean up.

- Gardenia: Somehow, some way, our family kept our Grandmother Verda Mae Marcum’s huge Gardenia for 58 years! But, we put it in the basement where there is no heat, yet doesn’t freeze, and sitting in a large tray of water to evaporate. In a normal home, they are as miserable as trying to keep a wild animal as a pet.

- Sanseveria/Mother-in-Law Tongues/Snake Plant: Easy peasy, and I have different varieties in every room because they are supposedly the best air purifiers.

- Bird of Paradise: Full sun, and I’ve done it before, but they can get mealy bug infestations that are difficult to deal with because of having to spray, which is messy.

- Fiddle Leaf Fig: Again, full sun, next to a window, and consistent water or else they will start losing leaves … plants will certainly tell you when they are unhappy!

- Ferns: All varieties that do so well outside in the summer all fall apart in the winter, including Macho, Kimberly Queen, Boston, and make you clean up daily from all the leaves dropping everywhere. Just go buy new ones unless you don’t mind looking at a mess all winter.

Take a short walk across The Paddock and over to The Keeneland Shop, where you can browse their signature merchandise and pick up a race-day souvenir. And of course, no race day is complete without a snack from one of the many concessions before heading out.

Cara has been a passionate advocate for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation for many years, inspired by the passing of her friend and sorority sister, Taylor.

After Taylor’s passing, Cara ensured she continued to raise awareness about cystic fibrosis and the invaluable work of CFF in Taylor’s honor. Now, Cara is honored to be recognized as a CFF Finest Honoree to continue carrying out her mission.

Having a daughter with Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1), Emily is deeply passionate about advocating for those who cannot advocate for themselves, noting that her experience has taught her that progress in one area can create ripples of hope and innovation in others.

Ryan is proud to be part of a community that links arms across neighborhoods and counties to support the things that matter with a combination of heart, hustle, and follow-through. “Louisville taught me that community changes outcomes,” he said. “And though I do not live with CF, I have stood by friends and families who do and seen how a diagnosis can reshape every day. I am grateful to be selected as a Finest Honoree, and more importantly, I am committed to earning this honor by helping bring a cure within reach.”

When Cara isn’t spreading awareness about cystic fibrosis or combating food insecurity in Kentucky and Indiana through her role at Dare to Care, you may find her at PG&Js Dog Park Bar with her 9-year-old beagle mix, Taco, or out enjoying nature. Currently, she is working toward her goal of visiting every National Park, with 27 under her belt so far.

Each day, Emily is reminded of the importance of cherishing those closest to her, always striving to express love and appreciation for all, regardless of the setbacks that may come her way.

Maeghan is a Marketing Project Specialist at Ashland Credit Union.

Anthony is a Senior Accountant, Budget & Financial Analyst at Norton Healthcare.

As a self-proclaimed “nerd at heart,” Maeghan loves old music, classic TV, historical novels, and being curled up with a blanket, working on her writing or a craft. She also believes in giving back to the community, which has led her to her involvement with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

With over five years of involvement with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Anthony has witnessed firsthand the amazing work the foundation has done with the help of a generous community.

“Being able to help raise awareness for a cause that is extremely personal to me is amazing,” he explained. “And being selected as a CFF Finest Honoree means getting the opportunity to dive even deeper into learning more about something that affects the daily wellbeing of my beautiful wife.”

Tracey is a Registered Dietitian and Adult Cystic Fibrosis Program Coordinator at the University of Kentucky Adult Cystic Fibrosis Clinic.

“I hope to be able to share my passions to further the cause of the CF Foundation, because I do believe a cure is possible, and I want to do my part to help achieve that momentous goal,” Maeghan explained.

Along with her goal of finding a cure for CF, Maeghan is working towards enhancing her graphic design skills to help the Ashland Credit Union better serve its community and towards publishing a novel.

To show his support for both his wife and CFF, Anthony plans to run a mini marathon in April and participate in the Bike to Beat Cancer event next September. Anthony also has a goal to have a house built for him and his wife, where they can enjoy spending time with their dog and support the North Carolina Tar Heels and the Cincinnati Bengals.

Patrick

Within her role at the University of Kentucky’s Adult Cystic Fibrosis Clinic, Tracey has helped grow and strengthen the clinic, developing a program that not only provides excellent clinical care but also supports patients and families in navigating the daily challenges of CF. Tracey hopes to continue advancing the clinic’s Adult CF program by fostering collaboration across the multidisciplinary team, implementing innovative, evidence-based nutrition and wellness initiatives, and participating in quality improvement and research efforts.

Since beginning her work in CF in 2021, Tracey has enjoyed assisting with and participating in CF-focused events and fundraisers, saying she stays engaged in the field by attending the NACFC national conference.

10 Tips

for Pet Owners You know the feeling when you pass your pet walking down the hallway and realize they have a little brain in there deciding what to do with their day? Even though we may joke that our furry friends are just be-bopping around with one brain cell making them act silly and cute, our pets have wants and needs just like the rest of us, they just can’t explain them in words. An important part of being a successful pet parent is learning their behaviors to make their lives as comfortable and fun-filled as possible, because even though they may only be a small part of our lives, we are their whole life. Here are a few of our favorite tips and tricks to make your life (and theirs) a little easier.

1: Stay in Bed The best advice we can give to save your sanity (and your sleep schedule) is to sleep in until you’re ready to get up for the morning. Barring any health issues, your pet should be able to make it through the night without playtime or a potty break. If you’re consistently awoken by late-night zoomies, consider upping your playtime during the day or leaving out more toys they can play with on their own.

Cats and dogs thrive on routine. If you continually give in to early morning meowing or whining for food and attention, they will continue to behave the same way. Over time, if you stop giving in to these behaviors, they should adjust their own inner alarm clocks, as well.

2: Bring These 3 Things on Walks (And That’s It!) Communal water bowls are a hotspot for viruses and bacteria to spread. Bring your own collapsible water bowl and water on long walks to keep your pooch hydrated and healthy. You should also never leave the house without poop bags, no matter how short your walk may be. Never bring toys or treats out when your dog will be around other dogs, as this may cause them to compete over resources.

3: Use Positive Reinforcement Reward the behaviors you like and ignore the ones you don’t. Any attention, whether it’s positive or negative, encourages animals (especially cats) to continue the behavior. If you pretend like it never happened, it should stop sooner. There are lots of ways to reward good behavior – treats, pets, or extra playtime generally work well – but you should always be consistent with praise to avoid confusion.

4: Roll Down the Windows To avoid upset tummies, roll down car windows a couple of inches and avoid big meals before car trips.

Try not to feed dogs big meals at least 6-12 hours before long car rides to keep their bellies from getting queasy (but it’s okay to offer a bit of water beforehand).

5: Use a Rubber Glove for Hair No matter how often you vacuum, it’s nearly impossible to get rid of all the pet hair that can accumulate across your house over time. It sometimes seems like our pets are out for revenge by leaving as much hair behind as possible, but they can’t help it! A simple hack is to put on a (clean!) pair of rubber gloves and brush surfaces in a circular motion to pick up pet hair. The rubber material is super handy.

6: Start a Teeth Routine While the goal is to brush your pet’s teeth once a day for 1-2 minutes, the reality often turns into fido running off as soon as they see the toothbrush come into view. It can take animals a little while to adapt to a new routine, even one that’s good for them. Start by letting them lick pet toothpaste off your finger, then dab a bit on a tooth, then have them lick off their own toothbrush. If that doesn’t work, try using pet dental wipes. No matter which method you choose, always sit behind your pet so they can’t back away from you.

7: Add Lemon Rinds to Plants Most seasoned pet owners know cats love chewing on things they shouldn’t, especially plants. Many household plants are toxic to cats to varying degrees. To ease worry, make the plants unappealing to wandering eyes (and teeth) by placing lemon rinds in the dirt. And if you have cats, always do your research before buying any plants to keep your fur babies from getting sick.

8: Prevent the Wet Dog Smell Dogs have water-repellent coats, which helps them dry faster, but it also makes them oily and more likely to keep in any microorganisms from the water. Hence, the “wet dog” smell. To avoid this, make sure your pooches are thoroughly dry after swimming or bathing, including inside their ears. Don’t just wait for them to air dry – extended dampness can lead to bacteria, yeast, and even mold growth.

9: Give Them Some Space Even the most clingy pets sometimes need a break, and pet parents should respect their wishes. Dogs should have a few different beds in multiple locations to choose from. Sometimes they want to be in the middle of the action, other times they just want a cozy corner to nap in, and occasionally they just want to go upstairs to get away from the riff-raff of guests. Leave your dog’s crate open if they have one to allow them to curl up somewhere they feel secure.

10: Research Your Pet’s Food When it comes to kibble, price doesn’t always equal quality. Always check with your vet before starting a new food routine, whether that’s a new brand or amount given each day. They can recommend what’s safest for them, how many calories they need, and how to prevent obesity (a leading cause of preventable vet bills). You can also ask your pet store about any frequent-buyer incentives, since you know you’ll always be returning for more.

KEENELAND LIBRARY There are many aspects of the Keeneland experience that feel like exclusive, locals-only secrets. Whether it’s the perfect spot to dine and watch the finish line or which vendor has the best bite, the months of April and October are all about staying in the know. The Keeneland Library collection is expansive. It contains over 30,000 books alongside millions of photo negatives and prints dating back to photography’s earliest days.

They hold millions of newspaper and magazine articles covering aspects of the equine industry as far back as the 1700s. Digitization projects are making historical resources available to students and racing fans across the globe.

The Keeneland Library is reaching a new generation of equine enthusiasts through its Starting Gate Storytime.

These readings of select children’s stories help young learners connect with horses in a fun way. Books are paired with immersive activities in art, literacy, history, or STEM to help deepen their understanding of the equine industry. And best of all, the Kids Club mascot, Buckles, is on hand to spend time with these young racing fans! This program is ideal for learners 3-7.

Starting Gate Storytime is free, but spots go fast, so it’s recommended to reserve tickets well in advance.

For adult learners, the Keeneland Library Lecture Series is a fascinating way to delve deeper into the equine world. This series celebrates recently published works about the Thoroughbred industry by authors who conducted their research at the Keeneland Library. The Keeneland Library also displays curated exhibits for the public to enjoy, providing an opportunity to learn more about the history of racing.

“We are excited and grateful to open Keeneland Library’s newest exhibit, Raíces: The Making of Latino Legacies in Racing, on October 1st. Our first bilingual exhibit, Raíces showcases stories of 100 men and women from across the Americas at every level of the Thoroughbred racing and breeding industry from the 1800s to today through biographical vignettes, rich photography, and neverbefore-displayed memorabilia,” explained Keeneland Library Director Roda Ferraro. “We developed the exhibit with contributions from writers and photographers from six countries. The collaborative process across languages and countries has yielded a special exhibit that we are pleased to freely share with our community. We thank 250LEX for its support of this exhibit through a 250LEX Cultural Grant.”

LEXINGTON CHILDREN’S THEATRE Did you know that one of the country’s oldest continuously operating theatres for young people exists right here in Lexington? Since 1938, the Lexington Children’s Theatre (LCT) has been providing imaginative, engaging, and uplifting theatre experiences for children and families.

You may be familiar with LCT’s Main Stage productions of plays; many are based on beloved classic children’s stories, while others weave new stories for young audiences. For many productions, LCT offers both public shows and exclusive school matinee performances. But what you may not know is that they also offer in-school touring performances of certain productions, taking the theatre into classrooms across the state.

Pick Up Perks is a “voluntourism” initiative launched by VisitLEX in partnership with Keep Lexington Beautiful. In exchange for picking up litter, locals and visitors can earn a free cup of coffee from participating local coffee shops. In some form or another, breast cancer affects all of us. If you are lucky enough to never have to go through it yourself, chances are you’ll have a family member, friend, or neighbor who will. For me, it was my mom. We were lucky enough to be able to enjoy the next six years after her original diagnosis, with all the ups and downs that come with cancer treatments and countless doctors’ appointments. Now, I spend every day in her honor, in hope that everyone who is going through something similar can find strength, community, and healing.

This October, give an extra big hug to any woman you know who has endured breast cancer, and make sure she hears your words of support and encouragement. And even if you don’t know anyone personally who has been affected by breast cancer, be sure to show your appreciation for the people you love, because you never know when life might throw you a curveball. -Emma Reilly, TOPS

F

or some, a hard day can look like having a long day at work or being late for a meeting. For others, it can mean getting a flat tire or coming down with a cold. For Amanda Bowers and Michelle Jones, hard days have come to mean something entirely different, and it’s all a matter of perspective.

Only 4% of women diagnosed with breast cancer in the U.S. are under 40, according to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Because she was so young at her age of diagnosis, with no meaningful family history of breast cancer, Bowers is a proponent for regular mammograms to aid early detection.

Both women are breast cancer survivors, and while no two cases are exactly alike, each of them has experienced the long road that comes with this life-changing news.

Jones was 46 when she was diagnosed and received her last round of chemotherapy and surgery at the end of last year. She advocates for everyone, especially women of color, to be consistent monitors of their own health.

Bowers was diagnosed with stage four invasive ductal carcinoma in January 2024 at age 38. While her cancer was found too late to receive surgery, she is currently on her third round of chemotherapy treatment at CHI Saint Joseph Health.

“My motto since day one is, ‘don’t let the hard days win,’” Bowers said. “I actually got it tattooed on me. Every time you go [to the doctor’s office], you’re just getting worse and worse bad news. So one day I looked at my motherin-law, and I was like, ‘You know, we can’t let these hard days win.’ I just try to be as positive as possible … And I do have a kind of dark sense of humor sometimes about it, because this is how I cope with it, I guess. I mean, if I don't, then I'd rather laugh than cry at myself.”

“If you don't feel right, something doesn't feel right, get it checked out. Because you just never know, and early detection is so important,” Jones said. “And I know for me, when I first got diagnosed, there weren't even a lot of stories that I could find out there from people of color.”

She discovered that while white women are the group that is most commonly diagnosed with breast cancer, Black women have the highest mortality rate. Though Black women have a 5% lower incidence rate of breast cancer, they have a staggering 38% higher risk of dying from the disease, according to Breastcancer.org.

“And the reason is, most Black women are not going and getting checked, and by the time their breast cancer is found, it's stage four, and it's too late, and they don't survive,” Jones said. “So that was one of the reasons that it made me feel like, hey, there's a bigger purpose, and I need to share my story and not be embarrassed or shy about it, because my story might make someone want to go get checked, and it could save their life.”

Though both women were diagnosed around the same time, Jones’s course of action looked slightly different from Bowers’. She received a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery, as well as chemotherapy and immunotherapy treatment.

“You really have to kind of sit down and talk with your oncologist and your surgeons to figure out your personal game plan, because everybody's just so different,” Jones said. “As soon as I found out, you know, you’re scared, you’re nervous, all these emotions. But the first thing that hit me after I felt all those things … I let myself feel them. I let myself be sad for a second. Then I said, ‘Okay, what do I need to do to survive?’ And at that point, I was ready to take the most drastic measures that I could, because I would rather have all this cancer removed from my body and live than worry and guess, ‘Am I going to be okay?’”

The topic of support is a big one when it comes to something as significant as a cancer diagnosis. Breast

cancer is a unique and personal journey for each woman who goes through it, but Bowers says her village of help has made a difference.

“I have my husband here, who keeps pushing me every day … If it weren’t for him, I’d have probably given up, but my mom and his mom, my sister, they’re literally the four people I can always rely on,” Bowers said. “My mom lives a little over two hours away. [My husband’s] mom lives about an hour away, and she comes and takes me to treatments when he can’t, so she’s been a big help, and my mom comes when she can.”

Bowers said her 17 nieces and nephews also motivate her to stay active, and she spends as much time with them as she can. Jones shares a similar sentiment.

“I always say I was very blessed. My family and friends stepped up in a big way,” she said. “I had support right out of the gate. I had people volunteering and taking turns sitting with me through chemo, sitting with my mom, like one of my best friends that I also work with.

She sat with my mom during my seven-hour double mastectomy surgery at the hospital so my mom wouldn't be there by herself, because my mom lives three hours away.”

Jones said that while she has always seen herself as a positive person, she stayed strong not only for herself, but for her nieces and nephews, whom she helped raise.

“Not only do I want to watch them grow and be amazing human beings, but I also don’t want them to ever not have me around, because I’m definitely their numberone supporter in all that they do. They were my reasons for fighting hard,” Jones said. “For a little bit, they would look out for me, take care of me, wait on me, hand and foot. I think they enjoyed getting to take care of me some, since I always take care of them.”

Beyond support from personal friends and family, both Jones and Bowers said that meeting other women who have gone through breast cancer through support groups and volunteering has made a big difference.

“I always say cancer is very hard. And when it comes to breast cancer, for women, not only are we losing our breasts, but then we lose our hair, we lose our eyelashes, we lose our eyebrows … all the things that society said, ‘These are the things that make women beautiful,’ we lose them all. So, for women who don't have a support system, mentally, it could be very tough. And if I didn't have the support I had, I definitely think it would have been very tough on me,” said Jones.

Generally, hospitals do not have the resources to provide some of the items that would make mastectomy surgery and chemotherapy treatment comfortable for breast cancer patients, which is where organizations like Betty’s Brave & Beautiful Hearts Foundation and Kentucky CancerLink become valuable.

Betty’s Brave & Beautiful Hearts Foundation started only two years ago. Jones was the first recipient of one of their care boxes, which are filled with items like chest port access shirts for chemotherapy boxes, and mastectomy recovery pillows for surgery boxes. Kentucky CancerLink also gifted Jones with two wigs, as she had lost her hair during chemotherapy treatment.

“When you're going through chemo, it's an expensive process because insurance doesn't pay for everything.

So the last thing you want to do is spend money on different things that might make it more comfortable for you,” Jones said. “So they worked hard … they went out and got the things to … make chemotherapy as relaxing and comfortable as possible.”

Since Jones’s first box, Betty’s Brave & Beautiful Hearts Foundation, led by Rebecca Baker and Madalyne Kinnett, has donated over 500 boxes in less than two years, each one valued at around $500 if the women were to purchase each item themselves.

Bowers, who also received a box, said, “[Rebecca] has got to be one of the nicest people I’ve met in my life. Rebecca and Madalyne have just been so amazing, and every time I talk to them, they text me nonstop to check on Presented by: me … Once you’re a part of their group, you’re part of their family.”

As a part of the support group, all of “Betty’s Girls” have created a space for mutual sharing and understanding in a way that even family and friends cannot match.

“It makes a big difference to be able to talk to someone who understands 100% what you're feeling, what you're thinking, what you're going through,” said Jones.

“Because sometimes I feel like we think we're bothering our family and friends if we are just having a bad day and we want to vent about something, you know, but we can kind of turn to one of our sisters, our pink sisters, and then we can get that support there.”

Jones said that while it’s nice to have each other, it’s sad to see how much the group has grown in a short time, because that means that many more women have been diagnosed with breast cancer. However, the sense of community among the women involved has grown tremendously.

“When somebody gives you something special like that, it makes you feel good … and I know it makes them feel great, as well. It really does show that they're thinking of you and they care about you,” Bowers said of the organization and receiving her box. “There are lots of free resources that we’re not aware of that are there to help you, and they are more than happy to do so. Always look into those things, whether you’re a caregiver or actually a patient.”

During difficult days, Bowers said the greatest help someone could provide a breast cancer survivor is their time and company. Her husband is her main caregiver, and long weeks of treatment and recovery meant that sometimes, neither of them would have any energy left to maintain their home as usual.

“It's the simple things,” she said. “It's the help, you know, help and cleaning your home. Walking your dogs, mowing your yard, simple things like that will go a long way. A long, long way. People don't understand that.”

For those who are just starting their journey, Jones

suggests being as prepared as possible and not being afraid to rely on others when necessary.

“There are no dumb questions. Knowledge is powerful, so it's very important to just ask all the questions, but just know that you are worth fighting for,” Jones said. “Don't be afraid to ask for help. I'm usually the person that's helping others, so asking for help was hard for me in the beginning, but I realized I needed it. There were just things I just couldn't do.”

Even in the midst of personal hardship, both Bowers and Jones make an effort to assist other breast cancer survivors in any way they can.

“I also make my own little chemo care packages for people. I made one for a girl I don't even know,” Bowers said. “They make me want to be better … And their helping me makes me want to help other people. So it's a great thing to help others when you can, especially when you've been given so much.”

The years of complex treatment plans and hard days have changed both women’s outlooks on life. It’s amplified their goal of helping others, advocating for themselves, and staying motivated to support their loved ones whenever possible.

“I think there were a lot of times when I would say no to a lot of things, like, ‘Oh, no, I don't want to go there. I don't want to do that.’ And I feel like, now I've realized, life is short, and it can hit us out of nowhere … things can change. So we really have to live in the moment,” Jones said. “Take the chances, take the trips, enjoy life, live it. Because we only get this one, and that's it. Breast cancer definitely showed me to get out there and enjoy life and live it to the fullest, because tomorrow's not promised, and that's what I try to do now. So I try not to miss out on any of the important things, and Presented by: I try to be as present as possible, but just go out and live life and have fun.” •

you’ve left the house or used a smartphone at all in the past month, you probably already know that Taylor Swift will be releasing her highly-anticipated 12th studio album on October 3rd. We know all too well what that means – it’s the perfect time to celebrate in style! Whether you’re hosting your own listening party or just want to make the whole place shimmer with a great game, we’ve got everything you need to make the night enchanted. Grab your glitter, cue the tracklist, and get ready to celebrate! by Emma Reilly

Setting the Stage For those who aren’t on the Swiftie side of the internet, this album announcement was quite a surprise. First, fans were met with a post stating that there would be a surprise guest on Taylor Swift’s then-boyfriend (now fiancé!) Travis Kelce’s podcast, New Heights. Many people speculated that the “special guest” would be Taylor Swift. A surprise podcast appearance would’ve been enough of a shock, but then came the countdown on Swift’s website for 12:12 a.m. later that night, coinciding with her 12th album.

Once the clock ran out, it was revealed that Taylor Swift would, in fact, be the special guest on the New Heights podcast, which Kansas City Chiefs player Travis Kelce co-hosts with his older brother, Jason. Not only that, but she also teased the release of her new album, available for “pre-pre-order.” With a blurred-out cover and nothing but some orange and green glitter to go off of, Swifties everywhere started digging around for clues.

On Wednesday, August 13th, the two-hour podcast episode premiered, crashing YouTube and breaking a Guinness World Record for the most concurrent views on a podcast on YouTube. The video now boasts over 21 million views. During the interview, Swift announced “new news” by pulling out a bedazzled “T.S.” briefcase and revealing the record cover for her new album, called The Life of a Showgirl, as well as the titles of all 12 tracks and a release date of October 3rd. It was said to be a return to her energetic pop roots and the total opposite of her previous album from 2024, The Tortured Poets Department. The episode also covered some recent questions on all fans’ minds, like her experience with finally purchasing her masters and going on her worldwide Eras Tour.

Little did Swift know that while they were inside recording the podcast episode, something even bigger was being planned. Later that night in the backyard of their Kansas City home, Travis Kelce proposed to Taylor Swift with a rose garden setup and a timeless vintage-style ring.

It’s truly the start of a new era!

Hosting an Enchanted Listening Party Even if you’re reading this after the album’s release, that doesn’t mean you still can’t gather with your besties to listen to the new album together! After all, a sing-and-dance-along is a lot more fun with friends.

First, decide your theme. Are you going for a “Showgirl” party to match the new album, or a specific aesthetic? You could even host a “Choose Your Own Era” party, where each guest dresses up as their favorite era and brings a snack associated with a song on that album.

If you’re looking for a theme that matches her newest album, be sure to go heavy on the glitter, orange and teal decorations, and lots of feathers.

Next, plan your activities. Of course, a go-to option is a friendship bracelet station. Buy some colorful pony beads, letter beads, and elastic string, and take inspiration from your favorite Taylor Swift song lyrics. Then share them among your friends!

Some other fun word-related activities are Taylor Swift song bingo or build-your-own-song Mad Libs. Find a template online or create your own for more personalized fun.

For lyric bingo, make cards for your guests with different song titles on each in a traditional bingo format. Then, randomly go song by song by playing each one as it is chosen. Guests will mark off the songs on their cards as they hear them, and whoever reaches a bingo first wins.

For Mad Libs, choose a Taylor Swift song, then remove some of the key words from a verse, leaving blank spaces on the page. Next, have all the guests fill in the spaces by category (verb, noun, adjective, etc.) without looking at the song outline that is on the back. Finally, guests can use their filled-in words to finish the song.

You all can be the judge of whose song is the best fit (or the worst fit!).

(yields 4 large milkshakes or 8 small ones)

Ingredients:

3 c. vanilla ice cream 6 tbsp. instant lemon pudding mix 1 c. milk 12 Golden Oreos Whipped cream Vanilla frosting for glass

Directions:

Frost the outside rim of your glass with vanilla frosting. Crush 4 Golden Oreos and roll frostingcoated glass to coat.

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.

Open both cans of crescent rolls and separate into 16 pieces. Slice each triangle into 3 triangles.

Place one sausage on each triangle and roll from widest to narrowest point.

Place ice cream, pudding mix, and milk in a blender and blend until smooth. Pour into serving glasses.

Brush each pig in a blanket with a bit of egg white and sprinkle on Everything but the Bagel seasoning.

Top with whipped cream and another cookie.

Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through. Served warm with ketchup and mustard.

NOTES: Add a bit of lemon extract for extra lemon flavor.

Substitute any flavor of ice cream or frozen yogurt.

Any cookies work well with this (especially shortbread cookies).

If you can’t find lemon pudding mix, substitute with vanilla pudding and add lemon extract.

Caramel Apple Bar Looking for a fun way to liven up your fall festivities? Gooey, sticky, delicious caramel apples are a seasonal treat that just about everyone loves. While supplying these treats ready-made is fine, why not invite your guests to make their own? This interactive party idea is unforgettably sweet. by Amanda Harper

Apple Approach

First, make your most important decision: will you serve whole apples or apple slices? There are pros and cons to each option. Whole apples are obviously easier to prep; simply give them a good wash and supply everyone with skewers or popsicle sticks on the day of. However, dipping whole apples requires more space and tends to be messier.

• Crushed Oreos

Sliced apples are a little trickier to prepare. You’ll want to follow these steps just before serving: Slice and core the apples. If you have an apple slicer, this will obviously be easier, but you can also slice them by hand. Add the slices to a large bowl. Mix together 1/2 tsp. of salt per cup of water necessary to cover the apples, and pour into the bowl.

Let the slices soak for 10 minutes, then drain. Place them in an airtight container. You can also serve these with skewkers to help everyone dip them mess-free.

Serving up the caramel can pose a bit of a quandry. If you don’t want to mess with heat sources, then ice cream topping or the premade caramel dip from your favorite grocer will likely work. These options will always remain fairly pliable without adding heat; test your caramel to see whether it's too runny or too thick before you commit.

• Crushed pretzels

Warm caramel is quite a treat, and heating it up opens up your caramel options. For dipping whole apples, heat the caramel in the crock pot or a Dutch oven. For apple slices, a crockpot fitted with smaller heat-proof containers of caramel (and other drizzly toppings) is a great option; simply add a bit of water to the bottom of the pot before turning on the heat. A heated chip and dip would also work well. For either slices or whole apples, appropriately sized catering heating trays would be great.

• Thinned peanut butter

Your guests may want options other than caramel to top their apples.

Warm or thinned peanut butter, melted chocolate or candy melts, or even a sugar-free caramel option would all be welcome. ​Perfect Presentation Setting up your bar is an opportunity to show some creativity. Set the table with a gingham or Halloween-themed tablecloth. Burlap and wood accents, as well as hay and moss, are fun accents – just be sure to keep them away from any heat sources!

For any toppings that don’t require heat, food-safe plastic cauldrons or dishes shaped like pumpkins, leaves, or apples would be a great way to convey the autumn theme. Metal pails, baskets, and mason jars would add a fun, fall farmstead vibe. Matching ramekins, bowls, and platters are also just fine for this purpose. •

Vegan White Bean Soup 3 14oz. cans white beans, drained and rinsed 4 c. vegetable broth, divided 2 T olive oil 1 onion, chopped 1 poblano pepper, chopped 1 1/4 tsp. kosher salt 1 4oz. can diced green chiles 4 cloves garlic, minced 1 1/2 tsp. cumin 1 tsp. oregano 1/2 tsp. ground coriander 2 T lime juice

Add half the white beans and 3/4 c. of vegetable broth into a blender.

Blend until smooth; set aside.

In a large pot, heat oil over medium heat. Add onion, poblano, and salt. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened. Add green chiles, garlic, cumin, oregano, and coriander. Cook, stirring constantly, for 30 seconds. Add remaining beans and vegetable broth.

Simmer for 10 minutes.

Stir in reserved bean purée. Simmer for 20 minutes. Remove from heat. Stir in lime juice and season to taste. (adapted from Love & Lemons)

Chicken Pot Pie Soup Cheesy Crusts 2 9” refrigerated pie crusts 1 c. cheddar cheese, grated 1 tsp. garlic powder (optional) Soup 4 T butter 3 stalks celery, finely diced 2 carrots, finely diced 2 onions, finely diced 2 tsp. fresh thyme, chopped 1/8 tsp. turmeric 1/4 c. all-purpose flour 1/2 c. frozen peas 1/2 c. white wine 6 c. chicken broth 3 c. cooked chicken, shredded 1/4 c. fresh parsley, chopped 1/2 c. heavy cream

Prepare crusts: Preheat oven to 375°F. Line two sheet pans with parchment paper. Unroll a pie crust onto each sheet. Sprinkle with cheese and garlic powder. Bake until edges are golden and cheese is bubbling, about 12 minutes. Set aside to cool.

Prepare the soup: Melt butter in a large pot over medium heat.

Add celery, carrots, onion, thyme, and turmeric. Cook, stirring occasionally, until vegetables begin to soften, about 4 minutes.

Sprinkle flour over vegetables and cook, stirring frequently for 1-2 minutes. Add frozen peas. While stirring constantly, slowly pour in the wine and chicken broth. Add chicken and parsley, and give a final stir.

Allow the soup to come to a boil, uncovered; let stand until thickened slightly. Remove from heat and stir in the heavy cream. Season to taste.

U.S. Senate Bean Soup 2 lbs. dried navy beans 4 qt. hot water, plus additional 1 1/2 lbs. smoked ham hocks 2 c. mashed potatoes 1 onion, chopped 2 T butter

Wash the navy beans and run through with hot water until they are slightly whitened. Place into a pot with 4 qt. water over medium-low heat. Add ham hocks. Cover and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 3 hours. Remove ham hocks and set aside to cool. Dice meat and return to soup.

Meanwhile, in a large skillet over medium heat, add sausage and mushrooms (see notes). Using a wooden spoon to break up sausage, cook until no longer pink, about 8 minutes. Remove with a slotted spoon to drain on paper towels.

When soup base is ready, add sausage and mushrooms. Return to a boil. Reduce heat. Simmer, uncovered, for 5 minutes. Stir in cream, red pepper flakes, and pepper; heat through. Taco Soup In a large soup pot over medium-high heat, add ground beef and onion; cook, stirring frequently, until beef is browned and crumbly, about 7 minutes. Drain.

Add cumin and chili powder; cook for 2 minutes. Drop cream cheese into the pot by spoonful; cook and mash cream cheese with mixing spoon until no white spots remain, about 5 minutes.

TOPS Tip: Will it Crockpot?

Many soup recipes can be converted to make in a slow cooker. Meat, onions, and garlic may need to be pre-cooked.

Some vegetables may need to be added later in the cooking process to prevent them from becoming mushy. If your recipe requires less than an hour of cooking, set your slow cooker to HIGH and cook for about 4 hours. If the recipe calls for longer, set it to LOW and cook for 8 hours. •

With some pastel face paint and crisp lines, this one is a great option even for beginners!

What You Need: • Mehron Color Pro Palette (Amazon, $125) • L’Oréal Infallible Flash Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner (Ulta Beauty, $12) • Honeymint Lipstick in Iced Zinnia (Merle Norman, $25)

Tutorial: Apply your regular base makeup (foundation, primer, concealer, bronzer, and blush). Don’t be afraid to use sharp angles, as that will match the crisp lines and high-definition look of pop art. Next, line your eyes with a pop of color over your eyelids and a thick black wing along the top and bottom of each lid. Next, add some circular dots or wide strokes of white in areas that would be naturally highlighted in the light, like near the top of your forehead, above your cheekbones, and near the tip of your nose. Frame your face with more lines of black liquid eyeliner along the angles of your face (along your cheekbones, up the bridge of your nose, and around your eyebrows). We went with blue, but feel free to try a different color, making sure that it’s bright enough to have a neon effect (we recommend lavender, bright orange, or hot pink). The lines don’t have to be super narrow. Once this dries, draw a white line through the center of your skeleton lines with a thinner brush. Once that is dry, add a second coat until you reach your desired effect. If you really want to go all out, use glow-in-the-dark face paint so your look glows in the night.

Tutorial: Start by outlining the shape of a lightning bolt with red makeup. To create extra-straight lines, you can use thin strips of tape along the edges, then remove after the makeup is applied. Next, fill in with a coat of red until it reaches your desired effect. Along the outside edge of one side, trace the border of the lightning bolt design with blue makeup in a thin line. Finally, use black eyeliner to outline the border between the red and blue sections. You can also apply red and blue makeup to the other eye as eyeshadow/ liner, if desired.

Then, use brown and black eye makeup to draw in leopard spots along your brow bone, or use face-safe stickers (we can’t all be experts).

Use black face makeup to color in the tip of your nose, and add whiskers on each side, plus a few dots on your upper lip and a line connecting the center of your nose to your top lip. Color your top lip black and your bottom lip with bright pink lipstick.

What is October Theory?

TikTok user Macy Morgan noted that it seems as though October brings on autumn anxiety for many people. With the changing leaves, folks begin to reflect on what changes they have – or have not – made in the past year. That reflection sometimes turns to dread.

In many ways, this makes sense; while the looming fall and winter get-togethers can be fun, they also bring lots

of well-meaning friends and family asking you about your love life, career, hobbies, and life. It’s tempting to imagine having a little glow-up before the big event. (Fans of Romy and Michele's High School Reunion know how this ends!)

Trying to overhaul your life within a month’s time is obviously unrealistic. But as the days grow shorter, people nonetheless find themselves tackling multiple selfimprovement projects in the hope of rebounding in Q4.

That’s a recipe for burnout.

Make It Happen Rather than getting spooked by the passage of time, embrace the moment as an opportunity to refocus and reevaluate. Perhaps consider October as a second chance at New Year’s resolutions; you still have time!

First, take a look around. What areas of your life first come to mind when you reflect on the year drawing to a close?

Think about your (likely forgotten) New Year’s resolutions and decide which ones still feel relevant. Identify the areas of your life that genuinely require more attention.

Next, acknowledge what is. Don’t ruminate on what could have been or what you did “wrong,” but instead simply write down any unmet goals, abandoned resolutions, or aspects of your daily life you’d prefer to change.

Finally, set clear goals. Experts suggest keeping them SMART: • Specific: Set very specific objectives rather than vague goals. Some people even find it helpful to break the objectives into specific tasks.

• Measurable: Have a benchmark to quantify progress and success. You should have a clear idea of what achieving your goal looks like.

• Achievable: Ensure that your goal is something you can reasonably achieve. If your goal is too challenging to attain, it’s likely not a good fit for you.

• Relevant: Ensure that your goal is aligned with your personal values. If it’s not something you care about or even want to do, you probably won’t!

• Time-Bound: Set a deadline to see your goal met. This will help you structure benchmarks for progress along the way.

What does this look like in real life? Perhaps you’d like to feel more physically fit. That’s an admirable resolution,

but it’s not a SMART goal. Instead, consider something more clearly defined to set yourself up for success. You could increase your average daily step count by 3,000.

You could aim to double the length of your walk by the end of the year. Or you could simply say that you’ll add one fitness class or gym day to your week per month until Christmas.

Embrace New Routines The best way to make a goal happen is to make it a habit.

Whatever activity is required on your part to achieve your SMART goal, do it consistently and build it into your daily or weekly routine. Going for a walk immediately after work, having a high-protein smoothie as soon as you get up in the morning, or setting a timer for your creativity sprint every day at noon. In fact, using your calendar for weekly date nights or friend get-togethers is a great way to keep yourself accountable to your goal.

But what if your goal doesn’t seem so easy to turn into a routine? Journaling is a great way to track your progress, your feelings about your October project, and any setbacks you’re facing. Setting aside 10 minutes in the morning to jot down your thoughts can offer you a little accountability and clarity on your goal progress.

Another great way to embrace your new routine is to let the past be the past. Whether you struggled to keep working toward this goal 10 years ago or 10 hours ago, keep repeating: “That was then. This is now.” •

Consider Your Technique

Turning a regular walk into a fitness stride requires better posture and purposeful movements. Keep your head up, and don’t look down at the ground. Keep your neck, shoulders, and back gently relaxed, not stiff. Allow your arms to swing freely with some swing in your elbows. Keep your back straight, not arched or bent, and slightly tighten your stomach muscles. And make sure you are stepping smoothly, rolling from heel to toe.

It’s okay to start slowly if you do not regularly exercise – any movement is better than none! Begin with a short 10-minute walk, and try to increase to 20 or 30 minutes after a week or so. You will build your endurance over time, making it easier to go longer distances.

Brooklyn DeLeye Sets Up Success Story by Larry Vaught / Photos courtesy UK Athletics If you are looking for the University of Kentucky athlete with the most high-profile resume, it might just be volleyball junior Brooklyn DeLeye.

Just consider what the 6-foot-2 outside hitter from Topeka, Kansas, had already accomplished going into this season: She was the Kansas Gatorade Player of the Year in volleyball during her high school senior season. She was Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year in 2023 and was SEC Freshman of the Week four straight times during the season when UK won the SEC title. She was the SEC Player of the Year in 2024 and American Volleyball Coaches’ Association All-American when UK again won the SEC championship. DeLeye was one of four finalists for the 2024 American Volleyball Coaches’ Association National Player of the Year and was on the 2025 Player of the Year Preseason Watch List.

She won a gold medal at the 2025 NORCECA Women’s U21 Pan American Cup when she was named the most valuable player in the tourney and also the best outside hitter.

DeLeye was also the team’s captain. A year earlier, DeLeye won MVP honors and was named best spiker of the 2024 NORCECA Women’s U21 Continental Championship when USA volleyball also won the gold medal.

However, there is still plenty left that the UK star player hopes to achieve. She said teammates, family, and other supporters “really motivate” her to do more to make them happy.

“For me personally, winning a national championship is something I would really like to do,” DeLeye said. “That is a team goal. For a personal goal, possibly winning national player of the year would be a dream come true. I was a finalist last year, so that is always in the back of my mind and something I have kind of thought about at times. But the big priority would be a team championship because I am all about doing anything I can for teammates.”

Kentucky won the 2020 national championship, the only volleyball title ever for an SEC school, and setter Madison Lilley was named the national player of the year.

DeLeye, who plays all six rotations, averaged 4.77 kills, 1.68 digs, and 0.33 blocks per set last season. Coach Craig Skinner says despite those numbers, DeLeye always “challenges” herself, and he would like to see her understand more that she’s not always going to be perfect.

“Brooklyn strives to be perfect all the time,” Skinner said. “So how do we find that balance of motivation and understanding that there are learning opportunities in between, little things like that that help her take the next level.”

Skinner knows that playing for USA Volleyball helped sharpen DeLeye’s skills, but he also wanted her to be a better team leader this season, both by example and by saying things at the right time to help younger players.

She had a match-high 23 kills in Kentucky's five-set loss to No. 1 Nebraska. The junior had 18 kills in a sweep at No. 5 Penn State, the defending national champion.

Despite Kentucky’s typical demanding non-conference schedule that featured all of the 2024 Final Four teams, DeLeye believes Kentucky will be one of the teams to beat when NCAA Tournament play starts. That seemed obvious when UK won the first two sets against Nebraska in a match viewed by 1.2 million viewers on ABC-TV, the most-watched regular season volleyball match of all-time on the ESPN Family of Networks.

“I really think this can be a special season. The Kentucky fans give us so much support, and the least we can do for all those fans is make sure we are the best team possible, and if we do that, I know we can be one of the teams to beat (for the national title),” DeLeye said.
