What makes a city great? The people.
T
he inhabitants of any great city from the beginning of time until now are the visionaries, business owners, artists, and members of the government. They all play an essential role in crafting the atmosphere of society living in our day to day lives. The vital component of their impact is determined by the satisfaction of Photo by Gary Barragan the people; which is translated in the financial and philosophical existence that is coveted in our desires to live the best life we can in the amount of time that we have it. As you turn the pages of this publication know that the TOPS Louisville staff have pulled together an issue that is the beginning of a new era in publishing in the city of Louisville with an elevated approach to showcase life in Louisville as the way inhabits live within its realm. From our history that can is found in museums, books, and historical landmarks to the businesses that breathe life into every significant component of the city, we’re a city that started in 1778. Aligned with the greatness of all things, we’ve had our success moments and the moments of growth that have required continuous teamwork in the determination to succeed and support those around us. We’re in the epicenter of highly regarded healthcare, education, athletics, manufacturing, food, and libations that have allowed our city and state to become a center of travel within the United States recognized by international publications and influencers alike. Once they arrive in the town through the Muhammad Ali International Airport or one of our significant roadways that connects us to 7 states, they’re welcomed by locals that hold the door for them, serve them the best food and slow pour bourbon but that’s on the surface. The depth of the gravitational pull to keep people here can be explored in our universities and their athletics, cultural experiences with music and art, shopping local in our boutiques, staying locally in hotels and if they stumble while they’re here, there are nationally recognized hospitals to mend them. We, the people, occupy these positions that make our daily lives possible and promotes us to keep this city great because we know that we need one another to play a vital role in the success of Louisville. We’re all serving this city, and that is what makes the city great. I hope you find the people that are featured in this issue to be deserving of greatness for their successes and the silent obstacles they faced on their journey to a brighter and bigger life comes with the same purpose we all share each day; to live the best experience we can while we have the time to do so. T
his year, compassionate non-profit Treyton Oak Towers celebrates its 35th year as one of Louisville's absolute preeminent senior living communities. Located in the vibrant and wonderfully historic Old Louisville neighborhood, the elegantly architectured grounds serve as home to people celebrating life 7 days a week. While things at Treyton Oak Towers are decidedly tranquil, there's never a lot of time on anyone's hands. There's a wellspring of things to do for entertainment and activities to be involved in! Amenities include an art studio, massage suite, a beauty salon, a library furnished with shelves built by one of the original founders, a rooftop deck with an amazing view, fantastic garden areas including a greenhouse, patio areas, a ballroom, a wellness center offering
classes that include yoga and tai-chi, as well as a gloriously elegant dining room with a varied menu for each meal. ome may not know that the colors on the Pride flag have meaning: Red means life, orange means healing, yellow means sunshine, green means nature, blue means harmony, and purple means spirit. These words together create a picture of what the word Pride means to the LGBTQ community. During the month of June, Pride events spring all over the world, and Louisville is no exception with Kentuckiana Pride. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Inn riots, the inciting incident of the modern gay civil rights movement and the kindling underneath the fire of Pride events such as Kentuckiana Pride worldwide.
The first Kentuckiana Pride was held in 2001 – after the Louisville Pride Picnics of the 90s were renamed to offer more representation to the region. Acceptance of the LGBTQ community in Louisville as well as nationally and internationally has seen a tremendous change since then. Some good, some not as much. Kentuckiana Pride Foundation President Allen Hatchell knows that this is a divisive time for the country and acknowledges that perhaps a look back at the strength displayed in the past is welcome. “This year we are celebrating the brave people who stood up 50 years ago at a bar in New York called Stonewall Inn,” he says. “Without those people rising up against oppression then, we may not have Pride like you see today.” And what does Pride look like today? Last year, the event moved from the Belvedere to Big Four Lawn, which was exciting for attendees and organizers alike but not without opportunities for improvement in knowledge of the new space. “This year we are able to capitalize on that knowledge to improve the guest experience throughout,” Hatchell says. “From the parade that now takes us through NuLu to the quicker admission process at the festival and the two fully packed stages that offer something for everyone.” There is a Family Fun Zone that has greatly expanded, and Louisville City FC will be

there to offer a mini-soccer clinic. There will be events and educational classes to cater to every community under the LGBTQ umbrella. RuPaul's Drag Race Season 10 Contestant and Louisville Native Dusty Ray Bottoms will be performing as will Martha Wash, Norma Jean Wright and Linda Clifford, the “First Ladies of Disco.” There will even be performances from more local organizations such as Pandora Productions, Louisville's only LGBTQ theater company.

With corporate sponsorships from such places as Tito’s Vodka, Play Louisville Owners Todd Roman, Chris Galla, Micah McGowan, and Joey Brown’s serving as grand marshals of the parade and more inclusive entertainment than one can shake a fist at, it’s all more than a Stonewall rioter could have ever dreamed. For every step forward, there is a Pulse tragedy, so it is essential to remember the great work that is still ahead. “Things have certainly changed in those 50 years, we have more equal rights and marriage equality for most of us, but we still have a lot to do for our transgender, non-binary, and queer communities,” Hatchell reflects. And the future is something to which Hatchell and others at the Kentuckiana Pride Foundation are fiercely dedicated. They have promised to listen to the community and give them an event that draws from the Pride of the past and encourages those in the present. They have not forgotten what those Pride flag colors mean, but they also know that Pride can expect a great many things, that its definition can vary from person to person. “Pride for me is about celebrating who you
are. About being able to connect with others who are like you and living life to the fullest without fear of persecution or prejudice,” says Hatchell. With vibrant gay bars that have moved into the heart of the Highlands and Butchertown and small triumphs such as Drag Queen Storytime and even a second and separate Louisville Pride event that has recently begun to take place in the fall, that fear becomes a little weaker and that Pride a little stronger every day.

razy Zen Life isn’t the three-word breakdown of what your life could be titled. Instead, it is the podcast title of two Louisville women on a mission to cultivate a natural blend of all components of your life. These superheroes don’t wear cape’s but they wear a lot of hats. Meet Brittany Swan and Shannon Kessler. Bringing two voices together was a challenge with their busy schedules that
dominates majority of their lives; marriage, motherhood, and work. Three small words that lives in large volumes. Brittany is wonderful wife, a proud mom of 3, and a yoga instructor at Bend and Zen Hot Yoga in Louisville. Shannon is also a fabulous wife, proud mom of two “Kesler Cuties”, a recently certified yoga instructor, and the owner of Primp Style Lounge. Knowing this, you may wonder how on
earth would they find the time to podcast? I asked the same and they said, “We’re neighbors so we spend time together as our kids play with each other after school. We made time to talk to each other as touchstones for Zen when we were experiencing the craze that life can bring. If two women can make one another feel connected and more peaceful, how could we not share that with others?” With a plan in their head, light in their heart, and a mission that couldn’t be torn apart, Brittany and Shannon started podcasting on July 25, 2018 and are holding steady with 64 episodes as of May 24, 2019. Their subjects range from fun topics about fashion, serious in-depth conversations about real issues everyone faces, to business advice. They cover all of the bases without any sign of hesitance to continue to cultivate an open culture between women. “We have a few special projects coming up. We’re just getting started. M
eghan’s Mountain is the story of Sarah “Meghan” Steinberg’s climb to life against cancer. Meghan worked to make the world aware of the devastating effects of the disease and the need for all of us to work together to raise awareness and funds to help those who have cancer (patients and their families) so that they know they are not alone in their climb to life. At the age of 22, Sarah Meghan Steinberg faced the most challenging battles of her life. Leukemia. Instead of allowing this devastating type of cancer to take another life, she decided to let it make a change in hers. Armed with first-hand knowledge of the challenges cancer presents to individuals and their families, Meghan started an organization with the mission of generating awareness and resources for cancer sufferers and survivors. Meghan's Mountain was born. At the time of her diagnosis, she was a student at the University of Louisville School of Justice Administration. Because of her illness, Meghan had to withdraw from college, give up her part-time job, and begin the fight for her life. Early on, Meghan realized that neither she nor her family truly understood what a person with cancer faced to live. And, if they did not understand, then other patients and their families must also not understand. Despite her battle, Meghan opened up her world on the Internet so that others would be able to travel her road with her. Meghan called her to climb to life, "Meghan's Mountain." Almost daily, an email update, often with pictures, went out to tell the world what Meghan and her family had to endure, and to update them on how Meghan was doing. Early on, those emails reached people in over 25 states in the US, and as far as Africa, France, India, and Mexico. Because of Meghan, more people throughout the world began to understand what it was like to fight this devastating disease called cancer. Meghan's emails and pictures throughout her journey touched the lives of many.

Meghan's First Mountain In June of 2005, after spending almost four months in and out of hospitals in Louisville to put her cancer in remission, Meghan went to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington, for a life-saving stem cell transplant (sometimes called a bone marrow transplant). Her brother, Justin, was her donor. Without this, Meghan would not have had a chance at life. Meghan underwent four months of treatment in Seattle before returning home in October of 2005. Since her original diagnosis, Meghan always battled cancer and its side effects in one form or another, but never let it interfere with her lighting the mountains for others. Meghan, her foundation, and donations from the community continued to raise funds to provide support, and share prayers for others who are also battling cancer.
More Mountains "In Meghan's final days, before going to Hospice with the knowledge that this mountain would take her to God, she asked me and others to please keep her foundation alive because she knew that no one diagnosed with cancer, or their family members, should ever have to fight this disease alone. She cared about the mountains of others in her final days. She was a selfless soul with a heart of gold." - Jerry Steinberg, Meghan's father. She battled three more rounds of cancer before passing away on January 23, 2016. Meghan, understanding that she would soon pass away, asked that her foundation continue so that her "brothers and sisters" fighting cancer would know that they will never climb their mountain alone. Meghan's funeral was very special. It was attended by over 500 people, with eulogies given by her Rabbi, Rabbi Slosberg; her "hero", Coach Denny Crum; and her sister, Libby. Her procession to her final resting place was a testament to the love that others share for Meghan: there were over a dozen police and sheriff's cars leading the way. Cards and letters came in from all over this country, sharing how Meghan had touched the lives of many.

Endless Summer Paddle was first founded in 2016 by Mimi Hahn and Matt Sheehan with an important goal: providing access for everyone to everything needed to enjoy exploring and enjoying this region's diverse waterways. They knew that the low impact sport of stand up paddle boarding was one that a community could enjoy, they just needed a hub
to center around. In 2019, they opened a physical location and added coffee to their name so that they could continue to build a paddling community and have a fresh meet up spot. Pursuing her passion, owner Kymberli Nix, opened this boutique style fitness and wellness studio to offer a variety of specialty classes all under the same roof. “It’s rewarding to see the sense of accomplishment and pride someone feels after completing a challenging class and pushing beyond what they thought they were capable of doing,” says Kymberli. “I love getting to meet so many people and becoming part of their fitness journey.” Waterside Wellness is located within Waterside apartment complex at River Park Place and offers convenient services to all residents there, but they are open to the public, as well. Everyone is welcome to stop by, meet the staff, and become a member. Maybe to you that’s a question, or perhaps it’s a statement, but either way, we’re going to explore just what we love about this easy going (but still pretty plucky) river city, and why we’re a remarkable place to be even on the 364 days of the year that the Derby isn’t happening. iving in Louisville feels like you’re in on something, a secret that not everyone is in on. It’s loaded with so many fantastic places to explore that when you stop to count, you just can’t help but be amazed. Miles and miles of park space in which to relax or exercise. Entertainment of all varieties can be found everywhere you look. We’re rich with the taste of bourbon trails. Art and culture abound and infuses everyplace we go. Plus, you don’t have to deal with the crowds of a major city. We’ve designed this special issue of TOPS as a sort of keepsake, something that you might reflect on years down the road to see just where we were collectively, at this moment in time. Always moving, always growing, but still unmistakably ourselvesthis is What Makes Louisville Great.

louisville From Past to Present Louisville has been around for hundreds of years and has a rich history, but it’s undeniable that we’re entering into an absolute peak period. Bolstering numerous hot spots, including theatres, museums, parks, and other tourist attractions, Louisville is fast becoming a cultural influence on the entire nation.
I
t feels like a quirky “big small town” where residents are never more than two degrees from anyone else, but Louisville is the largest city in Kentucky and the 29th most-populous city in the United States. It’s received the nicknames “The River City,” “The Derby City,” “The Possibility City,” “The Gateway to South,” and more frequently of late “Kentuckiana,” in combination with Southern Indiana.
The iconic, albeit controversial, George Rogers Clark founded Louisville, it’s one of the oldest cities west of the Appalachian Mountains. In a showing of great restraint, he resisted the temptation to name the town after himself, and instead attached the moniker in honor of King Louis XVI of France. King Louis XVI of France, Louisville’s namesake.
This was 1778 when the French were aiding America in the Revolutionary War. Our city is located at the Falls of the Ohio, the only major barricade to river traffic. Riverboats had to be unloaded and moved downriver to avoid the falls, something that helped form a culture of vitality here. By 1828, Louisville’s population had grown to over 7,000 residents. One of our most significant sources of pride, and one we often tend to take for granted, is Old Louisville. It’s the largest historic preservation district uniquely featuring Victorian homes and buildings in the United States. Our downtown was constructed with many modern high-rise buildings, as well as older preserved structures. The cast iron facades of the buildings of West Main Street in the downtown area are one the largest collections in the U.S. of buildings of their kind. It’s a matter of some frustration to commuters going across Main Street due to all of the traffic altering construction, but great care has been taken to preserve these facades and rebuild around them, something that will be a point of great pride sooner than later. Louisville takes great pride as the home of the GOAT, the incomparable boxer Muhammad Ali, the endlessly charming Jennifer Lawrence, who continues to be as smart and witty as she is beautiful, and the Gonzo one himself, Hunter S Thompson. Maybe it’s something in our

water (some of the best in the nation, by the way) that cultivates these strong characters. We are also the home of Diane Sawyer, the final resting place of Colonel Harland Sanders and residence of Kentucky Fried Chicken and YUM Brands, the University of Louisville and its Louisville Cardinals athletic teams, Louisville Slugger baseball bats, Louisville City FC soccer team, the Belle of Louisville, Humana, Kindred Healthcare, and a little horse race you might have heard about called the Kentucky Derby. Louisville is honored to host and fiercely support and protect a vast variety of small, independent businesses and restaurants. Some of these have become known for their originality and innovation. F. Scott Fitzgerald mentions The Seelbach Hotel in The Great Gatsby as a place where Al Capone would regularly meet with partners during the Prohibition era. The Brown Hotel in 1926, became the home of the Hot Brown. The Louisville’s Pendennis Club is given credit for inventing the drink named the “Old Fashioned,” made famous again in recent years as the favorite tipper of Mad Men’s Don Draper. Although there’s some contention, it has been said that Kaelin’s invented the cheeseburger, and even if that is not so, they have a great one. Although now sadly defunct, ear-x-tacy music store was once one of the greatest in the nation, a complete and total cultural touchstone for almost all who ever visited, and the answer to the question “Where did you buy your first album?” for a great number of us. A high point of excitement these days has to be our revitalized downtown. The Omni Hotel joined the list of fabulous hotels like the Marriott, the incomparable 21c, the ever elegant Galt House, and the historic Brown Hotel. The embarrassment of riches that is the Louisville Palace Theatre. The ever-evolving Fourth Street Live. The booming NULU area, a more fun set of shops and eateries for which one could never ask. Our city is on the move, and we’re excited to be a part.

Louisville is a fantastic place to be. We’ve got a low cost of living (third most affordable in the nation), highly valued cultural arts, and historical museums. Louisvillians are independently minded, friendly, and tend to be warmly welcoming and hospitable. Hundreds entered to win a spectacular prize - a lucky winner's outdoor space was transformed into the perfect party patio, just in time for Derby 145. Pamela Ritter won the package, consisting of an Outdoor Dining Set from Lane Venture Furniture and an Umbrella from Treasure Garden Umbrellas at a value of $4,775.00. "I love Digs and was thrilled to win the patio set; it's just stunning. I foresee many lovely gatherings with friends and family," Ms.Ritter said of the prize package. not always been easy. "We've had our share of upside down experiences, but those lessons, while painful at the time, can be the most impactful for a business – you'll never grow if you don't keep putting yourself out there. I used to look for that quick win and, while that sometimes works for others, I've found the best approach is to take smaller risks – baby steps – and be satisfied with incremental growth." That's one reason this small, homegrown business is looking forward to 2020 – they'll be celebrating 20 years in business – no small accomplishment for a brick and mortar retailer in such a changing and evolving marketplace...as any gardener knows, patience is an important virtue!

When Bill and Cindy Green's home was mostly destroyed in a ďŹ ery explosion, decorator Shane Pearson of Dwellings and a team of builders, developers, and other experts went into action to help. Now, the home is rebuilt and better than ever. Rocko Jerome reports on the details.
O
n July 20th, 2017, disaster struck when an electrical spark met a gas leak. Intensely destructive fire ripped through the Alta Vista ranch house home of Bill and Cindy Green, leaving more than half of it completely annihilated. Fortunately, the Greens were out of town at the time. "It was a really helpless feeling," Cindy recalls, "but I was intent on rebuilding and making it even better than before." Cindy wanted the house completely back in order by October 17th, in time to have an Open House for her friends and many vendors and in time for her to start preparing to host Thanksgiving. Friends and acquaintances were doubtful, but thanks to an incredible team, everything came together. Cindy's decorator Shane Pearson of Dwellings saw the incident on the television news. "It looked just awful," he says, "I felt so badly for them." He also knew, after a working relationship going back several years, that he could help. Together with builders Chris Carey and Norman Noltemeyer of NC Construction along with a lot of assistance along the way, the home was rebuilt better than ever.

at home FAMILY AREA The original house, which was built in 1968, was a total loss and had to be rebuilt from the original foundation. Met Life required that they keep the basic footprint, but they were able to redesign the interior even with the same floor plan. One of the most dramatic changes was raising all of the ceilings over 2½ feet to make it feel much more modern and spacious. Along that line, they also made several small rooms

around the living area into a much more open area. "We love to entertain," says Cindy, "and we like that this is set up in such a way that people can move around and enjoy each other." In what's become a fantastic family anecdote, Cindy brought a photo of a fireplace that she had seen to Shane...only to find out that Shane had created it in the first place! "I told her that it would absolutely not be a problem," Shane says with a warm laugh.
DOWNSTAIRS Going down a glass staircase will take you into a very sleek and modern bar area. There's a fireplace that leads from this floor up through the main floor, right around the center of the house. The bar itself is made of quartz and is loaded with character, especially with its alabaster background and backlit wine bottles on display.
Downstairs also hosts a craft room that Cindy spends a lot of time enjoying, as well as a laundry room and storage space for Christmas decorations. All of the closets in the house were custom designed, a real point of pride for Cindy.

EXTERIOR The backyard area of the home features a luxurious pool with a slide that is fun even just to look at, an ornate garden area, and a lovely shed. It's Cindy's happy place. "I love to look out at all of this," she says with a smile. Although separated by a fence, this area flows very well with the outdoors area that belongs to the next door neighbors, the DeCamillis family. "All of the kids, grandkids and adults love to share in the fun throughout the year," Cindy says, "it's like a sports complex!" It's especially sweet because after the fire, the DeCamillises and close friends helped Cindy and Bill’s daughter Sandra recover some of their personal belongings from what was left in the home. They include many old family photos and personal effects that now reside throughout the home. Cindy says "It's not a whole lot, but we were fortunate that any of these things survived."

Although it’s not necessarily always a compliment to call something “hip,” this Highlands joint embodies that in its best sense. Since that time, they have expanded to include a store in Prospect. The staff brings more than 300 years of experience to the store that is a one-stop shop for hardware and many other items for the home and outdoor living area. Brownsboro Hardware & Paint is the largest local dealer of Weber, Big Green Egg and Traeger Grills, and offers repair and service on all three brands.
Brownsboro Hardware & Paint provides a variety of services such as propane tank refills; on-site window and screen repair; mailbox installation; key cutting and re-keying locksets; and knife, tool, lawn mower, and blade and hedge trimmer sharpening. Benjamin Moore paints are available at both stores. Also at the Brownsboro Road store are a U.S. Post Office and a UPS Shipping Department. The Prospect store is an authorized service dealer of STIHL outdoor power equipment. “Being a local company means that what our customers spend with us stays here in Louisville,” says Destinee Bradley-Brown, assistant manager. Brownsboro Hardware & Paint, an active participant in the life of the community, donates to many non-profit organization auction events. The Brownsboro Road location is the site of one of the city’s most fun and tasty weekends, the Big Green EGGFest, a charity event. Purna started V-Soft with his wife Radhika in Houston, Texas in 1997, as a response to a lack of service and technology in the software sector. Derby City Gaming Derby City Gaming officially opened its doors in September 2018. The $65 million-dollar project is Louisville, Kentucky’s only licensed gaming facility. Derby City Gaming is located on the old Louisville Downs and Sport Spectrum site that was acquired by Churchill Downs Incorporated and subsequently opened Derby City Gaming in 2018. “At Derby City Gaming, visitors will find nearly 1,000 Historical Racing Machines in the 85,000-square foot facility. With over 70 game themes, guests are able to play machines they are accustomed to as well as new, fun, and exciting games,” says Tim Bryant, President and General Manager at Derby City Gaming. “The success of this facility helps contribute $1 million dollars each month towards horse racing purses, benefiting the

Kentucky horse racing community.” Derby City Gaming’s location includes two restaurants, an entertainment stage and a huge center bar with fourteen 85inch televisions and more than 80 different bourbons. Derby City Gaming also features a convenient simulcast area. Derby City Gaming is a non-smoking building. The facility’s smoking patio has a state-of-the-art exhaust system that exchanges air flow every four minutes. Over 100 Historical Racing Machines are available to play in this area. “In addition to our contributions to the horseman’s purses, Derby City Gaming has had the opportunity to work with local charitable causes including South Louisville Communities, Gilmore Elementary, Speed Art Museum, Kentucky Derby Festival Foundation, Kentucky Derby Museum Foundation, Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund, Darrell Griffith Foundation, Relay for Life, Let’s Dance Louisville and Kentuckiana Pride Festival,” says Bryant.

Kentucky Artisan Distillery In 2012, three men came together with an idea to create a place for people to ‘bottle their dreams’ in the old Crestwood, Kentucky Ice Cream Distributors building. Steve Thompson’s many years of experience in the spirits industry played a major role in the inspiration behind the Kentucky Artisan Distillery concept. It would be the first contract distillery in Kentucky, and the only production-sized farm-to-bottle distillery capable of distilling as little as one barrel for a special occasion on up to over 1,800
barrels a year for partners like Jefferson’s Reserve. This would be accomplished running the distillery completely by hand. KAD is one of the only distilleries in Kentucky that uses only pot stills, and is completely non-automated and non-computerized. KAD’s small team of dedicated and talented distillers complete every step of the bourbon production process completely byhand. Led by Head Distiller, Jade Peterson, the team of distillers runs a distillery devoid of iPads, rather using their senses to know when a batch is finished. The distillery is as close as a production facility in the 21st century can get to how bourbon was made 200 years ago. This makes KAD the perfect home for Jefferson’s Reserve Bourbon and Steve’s own brand, Whiskey Row Bourbon. Tour guests actually interact with the distillers and are able to ask questions, which is very unique on a distillery tour. Tours are offered on the hour seven days a week: Monday-Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and Sunday, 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

W
atching Jeff Walz work the sideline or run a press conference is a study of excellence in performance. The University of Louisville women’s basketball coach exudes passion in all he does and that passion brings admiration and adulation from his athletes as their leader and supporter. He’s emotionally involved with the game, as any great coach is, and celebrates his players regardless of the outcome. In his 12 seasons as head of the Louisville women’s program, he’s amassed a sparkling 332-99 record and has led the team to three final four appearances in 2009, 2013 and 2018.
They have 15 big sisters that they can look up to. Our kids are accepted with open arms from my team and staff. They enjoy spending time watching athletes play basketball, traveling to road games, and being a part of our extended Walz Family. The success he brings to the team, its players and fans is undeniable and palpable. One of his stand-out qualities is his accessibility to all: his players, the fan base, the media. It’s a singular trait with him as he consistently looks for opportunities to raise the profile of his student-athletes and their outstanding accomplishments in the classroom and on the court. But Jeff has fostered the same mentality off of the court that he lives in his real life with his wife Lauren and their four children. If you recall the first Louisville Live basketball preview event, you may have noticed two future Cardinals in the crowd with his wife, his youngest children; 5-year-old Lola, and 3-year-old Lucy. As Jeff told TOPS, “It’s important to try and
evaluate where I am putting my priorities daily. I understand that I have an important job in athletics that has many demands. I also understand that being a husband and father is my most important job. I have to check myself at times; it is easy to get entrenched in my work and lose focus on what is happening at home.” Family leads his life. His favorite people to spend his time with is his wife and rock, Lauren, and four children: Kaeley who is 13; Jacob, who is 12 along with 5-year-old Lola, and 3-year-old Lucy. “They give me energy and keep me going in a profession that can sometimes be draining. My kids are all very different in their ways, but I love spending time together with them. My older kids are the best playmates and role models for the little ones; it’s neat to see their relationships. The kids love staying active with their sports and activities. Kaeley plays volleyball and tennis; Jacob is skilled and passionate about basketball; Lola loves to attend her gymnastic classes and tennis lessons; and Lucy, she is becoming a great swimmer!” With so much movement in his life, you may wonder how he does it all. As superb as his Superman qualities, Jeff said that his wife shares the same philosophy about life, family comes first, and he would not be where he is in life without her support. Which makes her as super as him by opening their home to share it with his players as they are entirely intertwined. “They have 15 big sisters that they can look up to,” Jeff says proudly. “Our kids are accepted with open arms from my team and staff.” He also added, “They enjoy spending time watching athletes play basketball, traveling to road games, and being a part of our extended Walz Family.” Jeff commits himself to the same efforts in his children’s lives by attending as many games, activities, and practices that his children are involved in. He wants them to know he is the dad that will always be their cheerleader and supporter, unconditionally. Regardless of his success in his career, Jeff said, “I love my job, but I don’t want it to become my life. I want to be successful, but I would rather be a better father and husband than a coach.”

Kentucky Welcomes 2018 PGA Barbasol Championship at Keene Trace Golf Club
A New Tradition

F
or Kentuckians, spring and summer have long been highlighted by Keeneland. Now, summer also has its own signature event with the Barbasol Championship. Recently, the PGA TOUR announced that Barbasol would continue their title sponsorship of the tournament, which will be played at Keene Trace Golf Club’s Champions course, through 2023. This year, the tournament will be held during the week of July 15-21, and will host 132 of the best golfers in the world, 1,000 volunteers, and approximately 10,000 fans a day. “There are only forty-two PGA tournaments worldwide, and Kentucky has one of them. That is a big deal for our entire state. We want people from Bowling Green and Louisville and Northern Kentucky to come experience and support this tournament,” says Bryan Pettigrew, the Tournament

Director and National Sales Director for Global Golf Management (GGM). Formerly, Pettigrew served as Senior Vice President of Marketing and Sponsorship of the Breeders’ Cup. He says, “The two sports I grew up around were horseracing, with a grandfather who owned racehorses in Oklahoma, and golf. I would say I’m one of the luckiest guys in the world to have gotten to promote these two sports I love and am really passionate about.” Another thing Pettigrew and his team are passionate about is promoting the state. He says, “This is a great opportunity to show off Kentucky and our hospitality. These guys play some of the nicest golf courses in the world, but I think what makes our tournament different is the local hospitableness. When they show up at this tournament, our volunteers are going to be trained to answer
questions and help them and treat them differently than they are at other tournaments. The same is true of our local businesses.” To ensure this, GGM has been working hand in hand with both the Visit Lex and Visit Jessamine tourism bureaus, as well as the local hospitality industry. In order to ready establishments, Pettigrew says, “We’ll be taking a page out of the Super Bowl and other major events’ playbooks and hosting a restaurant and hotel training day at Keeneland in June where we’ll bring in managers and give them a Barbasol 101 course and encourage them to decorate their restaurants and hotel lobbies with flags, golf balls, and golf tees to get people in the spirit.” But, as much as the community will be giving to the tournament, the tournament will be giving back. One of the most important aspects of the Barbasol Championship, as well

as all PGA TOUR events, is their commitment to enriching the places they play through charitable contributions. “PGA tournaments raise one hundred ninety million dollars annually for charity. That is more than all the other four big sports combined. That is the business model in golf,” states Pettigrew. To this purpose, the Barbasol Championship advisory board created Caddie127, a new umbrella charity. Caddie127 takes its name from the golf term and the Bible verse, James 1:27, which advises “to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” Pettigrew further explains, “Golfers need guidance, help, instruction, and someone to show them the way. They never walk alone, and that’s the gist of ‘caddie.’ We believe women and children should never walk alone, and we intend to do something about it.”
Barbasol Championship is committed to growing the sport of golf in Kentucky. Pettigrew states, “We’re trying to reach out to the different segments of golfers to be inclusive and grow the sport.” To involve and inspire younger golfers, GGM is working in conjunction with the Kentucky High School Golf Association and adding a Junior ProAm where high school players can come and play with the pros. This will occur on Monday, July 15. They are also partnering with Merrill Lynch to provide a Women’s Executive Forum, where women can hear peer panelists speak about their challenges and their struggles in business. It will be followed by the opportunity to either play in a ProAm or participate in a golf clinic. On Saturday the tournament will also host a Family Day, with an array of activities for children and a Fan Expo just outside the clubhouse.

This year, five philanthropic organizations working for the betterment of women and children have been chosen as charitable partners who will receive substantial financial contributions. They include All God’s Children, Kentucky Children’s Hospital, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Refuge for Women, and the Woodhill Community Center. In addition to growing Caddie127, the

And, if you’re looking for exercise, you can walk the golf course,” says Pettigrew. Members of the military, both active duty and retired, and three members of their families get in free, as do those 16 and under. Those who want to be even closer to the action can volunteer. There are a range of opportunities and specialized training is provided. Pettigrew states, “We’re going to train all of the volunteers using the Disney customer service method that the PGA tour has adopted. They also get a Barbasol shirt and cap and will be fed twice a day. We’re working on making it fun and exciting for them.” Volunteers must be 18 years or older, or 16, if accompanied by a parent. Pettigrew’s hope for this and future years is that the tournament becomes a new statewide tradition. “We hope Kentuckians embrace the Barbasol tournament as a signature event, much like Keeneland. We hope it will be something they mark on their calendars, consider when they have family and friends come to visit, and that companies take advantage of when hosting clients.” He adds, “We want to welcome people from around the world to our state to explore our cuisine, the bourbon trail, and our horse country, as well as golf. We want them to get to experience all the things that make Kentucky special.”

Long story short, bourbon is more than just a drink around these parts. It’s a culture. As event planners, we are often asked to come up with creative ways of reimagining traditions. When thanking a loved one, visiting a friend outside of Kentucky, or welcoming a guest, no gift is as versatile as bourbon. While bringing a bottle is an excellent and everyone loves a stellar bourbon ball, there are so many other ways to say thank you with bourbon. Three of our favorite local shops will help you find the perfect bourbon inspired gifts for every situation. Beyond the Distillery Bourbon industry is more than just the spirit. There are sites hidden all over the city that fill in the blanks left by distilleries. Just a little east of Bourbon Row is the home of Vendome Copper and Brass Works (729 East Franklin Street), the birthplace of many of Kentucky’s most famous distilleries’ gorgeous stills. Looking for a field trip away from downtown, visit the grave of one of bourbon’s most respected forefathers, I.W. Harper’s own Isaac Wolfe Bernheim, located in the Olmsted designed Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest (Clermont, KY).
In your Home A nightcap is always a great way to top off a summer Kentucky evening, but here are three other ways you will find us partaking in the bourbon community. Entertain with Bourbon One of our favorite aspects of bourbon is the bottles. There are endless uses for bourbon bottles once the liquid is gone. Most commonly, we use them for entertaining in place of vases and water carafes. More experienced crafters have turned them into lamps, candles, and clever kitchen storage. The possibilities are endless!
Cook with Bourbon The sweet and smoky flavor of bourbon compliments many southern culinary traditions. Give more drama to a delicious pecan pie with the addition of bourbon to your family’s favorite recipe. Add a splash to homemade barbecue sauce for an experience beyond any store-bought brand. And don’t forget to use bourbon infused spices. Decorate with Bourbon While the picturesque photographs of distilleries are gorgeous in any home, there is more you can do with bourbon to decorate your space. magine Julie Dolan around age eight, using her family's camcorder to make pretend news shows with her younger brother. "We would put on different clothes and I would interview him, make up little situations," she recalls. "I always knew that broadcasting was something that I wanted to do, but I wasn't sure if it was something that I could do." She would, of course, make it happen— leaving her home of Cincinnati to study at the College of Charleston as a young adult, where she would study and graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in communications media studies in 2007. This took her to a reporting job in Evansville, where she quickly found herself on the air. "You really learn by being in the field," she

says. "Going live on the air and feeling natural about it is something that you really have to just jump right into and develop as you go." 2012 would take her to Lexington, where she would serve as an anchor on WLEX, an NBC affiliate. While there, her life would change forever when she would meet Louisville native Andy Barger, the man whom she would marry in 2016...but not before she would transition to Cincinnati's WCPO in 2014. She found that it was fantastic to be back home and doing what she loved, but living long distance wasn't easy. "We were married and then lived apart for six months! It wasn't easy," she recalls. Since Andy, a structural engineer, was tied down here designing projects like the revamped Kentucky International Convention Center and the cutting-edge redesign and remodel of the Speed Museum, Julie began to look for work in broadcasting in the Derby City. "I heard that WLKY was the best," says Julie. "After I came in for an interview, I really believed it." She met with News Director Andrea Stahlman and Jen Osburne, Assistant News Director, and found them both to be extremely impressive. She happily accepted the morning anchor chair when it was offered. "I love working in a newsroom run by women. They’re family oriented and understand that while news is our top priority, life exists outside of the newsroom, as well." Julie says the morning team has started to gel in the last year, making work even more enjoyable. Over her career, accolades and awards would begin to stack up, including an Edward R Murrow Award given to WLKY for a story that she played a role in, she was named a Kentucky Colonel by Governor Steve Beshear for outstanding community service, and just this past year she was named best anchor in the state by the Kentucky Associated Press. She's appreciative of all this, but there are two very important concepts that drive Julie Dolan. "There's nothing like breaking news. Getting in depth on a story and taking it through to its conclusion is such a satisfying thing. However, one of the most important things, especially in local news, is to focus on people who live in this community. There's nothing like the feeling that comes with shining the spotlight on people who are making a difference."

BABY MAKES THREE Now 10 months old, Julie and Andy's little baby Gwendolyn has become the center of their world. "When I was pregnant, a lot of people didn’t realize it because I was behind the news desk," Julie says with a laugh. "It's as if she just appeared!" The magic doesn't end there, as the beautiful baby is showing some pretty incredible developmental signs, like trying to walk at nine months. While the somewhat grueling schedule that comes with the morning shift is challenging to many, it works very well for Julie. She gets out of bed at 2:30 AM, goes to work, goes on air, and is home in time to get little Gwen after a half day in daycare and spend the afternoon with her. "I have the best of both worlds. It's been so much better than I expected. Now that I have her, I just don't know what I ever did without her."

ollowing the 9/11 tragedy in 2003 WAVE, the Mid-South Division of Kroger and the Association of the U.S. Army at Ft. Knox partnered to form Kentuckiana Cares to assist post 9/11 families. The organization experienced immediate and phenomenal success. The name was changed to USA Cares, which better represents the group’s reach that includes Kentucky, Texas, Indiana, Michigan and Missouri/Southern Illinois, California and Nevada. The headquarters remains in Louisville.
members’ financial needs. “If service-related disabilities have caused them to miss work and their home is under foreclosure or they’re facing eviction, our work with the landlord or mortgage holder is important in order to keep them in the house. Staying there as a family promises a much higher chance of success,” says Chesser. USA Cares also assists with food and auto payments.
“From 2003 to 2009 so many service members were returning with significant injuries and illnesses. We focused on conditions such as PTSD, traumatic brain injury and military sexual trauma because those areas demonstrated the most need,” says Trace Chesser, Interim President/CEO.
Creating online training programs, offered free of charge to the service members, is a key component of USA’s Career Transition Program. Chesser and the staff are involved in translating military skills to what employers understand and want. He finds that employers are frequently impressed by military personnel’s talents and soft skills, but he believes there still exists a communication barrier about translating skills to the workplace.
Services that respond to those needs continue although a wide range of military service-connected disabilities are central to the organization’s mission. USA Cares does not provide clinical services, but instead works with third parties, such as utilities and mortgage companies, to help with service
USA Cares and Ft. Knox are joining in a program that is targeted to service members who are about ready to retire. The Senior Leaders Corporate Fellowship program pairs these individuals with corporations that can use specific expertise. “The military recognized us and asked for our help. It’s a
huge talent attraction model that allows the retiring service members to go into the corporations for eight weeks to learn the businesses and gain experience. We’re able to bring people from other branches, not just the Army, and from outside this geographic area into the Ft. Knox program. It’s a plus for the economy and addresses the workforce shortage,” says Chesser.

Aubrey Gonzalez, communications manager, reports that USA Cares receives 250 to 300 calls each week from service members around the country. “We have responded to over 112,000 requests for assistance and have provided in excess of $15 million in support grants. And we’re very proud that we saved 4,776 homes from foreclosure or eviction proceedings. Each family that receives help from USA Cares is given a dedicated case manager, often a veteran or a spouse or child of a vet. “It’s very rewarding. Probably 95 percent of the 15 staff we have are related in some way to the military. That makes us unique. We’re very sympathetic to those we serve and can understand what they’re going through. Knowing the most difficult day you have in the office, you can go home feeling you have assisted veterans and their families in their darkest times. But it’s discouraging to know we could do so much more with additional funding. As many families as we help, there are so many
